Interview with ÖÖD Mirror House

International Glamping Business spoke with Matthew Parkinson, UK & Ireland Manager at ÖÖD Mirror House, to find out more about their takeover in the glamping sector.

What inspired the creation of ÖÖD Mirror House, and how does it cater specifically to the needs of glamping operators?

Growing up immersed in nature, Jaak and Andreas Tiik knew first-hand what it really meant to get lost and found between the wild rivers, bogs and woodlands of Estonia. As it turns out, this rare gift of experiencing the bounty of a country covered over 50% by a blanket of forest would later on find itself the sole inspiration behind ÖÖD.

During a weekend hike, the two brothers wanted to elevate their trip with an overnight stay, but without the typical one-size-fits-all hotel experience. They wanted something different – something that would not cut them off from a natural experience, yet give a sense of comfort and relaxation like no other. Outdated log cabins in short of light and spirit just didn’t cut it any longer and surely there were many nature aficionados on the same thought frequency.

This particular realisation inspired them to intertwine the yearning for nature, seclusion and rest into one unique whole – a type of accommodation that would not only change the way people experience nature, but also change the industry.

Can you describe the key features of ÖÖD Mirror House structures that make them particularly suitable for glamping sites?

In its initial years, ÖÖD delivered its innovative houses worldwide, from the remote corners of Iceland to sunny California and vibrant Ghana, showcasing their houses’ exceptional engineering designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Today, ÖÖD mirror houses grace diverse terrains, from the lush Mexican Yucatan jungle to Vermont’s Green Mountains and Norway’s Tustnastabben foothills, continually adding to their list of remarkable destinations.

ÖÖD mirror houses combine striking aesthetics with practicality and comfort, meticulously considering every detail for an effortless stay. What sets them apart is the awe-inspiring 180-degree floor-to-ceiling glass facade, seamlessly connecting guests with nature. Prioritizing environmental integrity, ÖÖD’s houses feature near-invisible designs that leave landscapes unspoiled with engineering made to stand the test of time, creating a visually non-existent footprint.

What materials are used in ÖÖD Mirror House constructions, and how do they ensure durability and sustainability in various climates?

Our houses now exist in over 25 countries worldwide in a range of difference terrains and climates from Norway to Mexico and Scotland to Ghana. Built primarily from steel, glass and aluminium, the structures are built to last a generation. Underfloor heating comes as standard and a dual system air con unit ensures comfortable temperatures year round.

How customizable are ÖÖD Mirror House units for glamping operators looking to create a unique and branded experience for their guests?

We’ve listened to our customers over the years and have developed a lineup that we’re confident matches our customers needs at a range of differing price points. From our reflective mini “Glamping House” to our most popular fully serviced “Signature House” through to our the “Möön” and “Glääzy’ units.

We do occasionally take on fully customised projects, however we tend to stick closely to our existing range. Interior soft furnishings are always customisable.

Can you share some success stories or case studies where ÖÖD Mirror House units have significantly enhanced a glamping business?

We have some fantastic success stories both from private customers and through our innovative ‘partnership model’. Our partners in Kirtlington, Oxfordshire generated close to 500k in revenue with 7 units in their first year.

In Iceland, some of our units command upwards of 600 USD per night when matched with a stunning location and motivated site owner. The key to the success is that our units are not only built to an extremely high standard but they reflect the true nature of a place, seamlessly telling the story of the location while remaining unique in each and every landscape they exist.

What are the logistical considerations for setting up an ÖÖD Mirror House unit, and how does your team support glamping operators through this process?

There are a series of considerations to think about. From planning permission and licensing to layout, servicing and guest experience on site. Alongside local expertise, we work with a site owner through every step of the way to ensure the project goes smoothly. The goal is always to have a seamless installation, a plug and play scenario.

ÖÖD Mirror House
How does ÖÖD Mirror House address the balance between luxury and eco-friendliness in its designs?

Our strategy is to use extremely durable and long lasting materials that will last a generation. What we see time and again in the industry are buildings that are not built to stand the test of time or that degrade rapidly. This is not the case with our company.

What kind of maintenance do ÖÖD Mirror House units require, and what support do you provide to ensure their longevity?

Like all buildings, they require some love and attention. The building comes with a warranty but we’re always available on the phone if someone has an issue.

Can you explain the cost-benefit analysis for a glamping operator considering an investment in ÖÖD Mirror House units compared to traditional glamping accommodations?

A simple case study works best here. There are numerous locations where our units sit amongst an array of different building type – we’re generally always the highest grossing. The houses are so visually striking that it kind of works to make them a ‘must book’ experience. An investment in us is also a long term investment – you have an extremely well built structure designed to stand the test of time coupled with timeless design.

What future innovations or developments can we expect from ÖÖD Mirror House that might benefit glamping operators looking to stay ahead of industry trends?

We’ve just launched our Limited Edition Golden House! Its a totally different vibe, finished to 5* standard inside – we’ve collaborated with some fantastic companies in its creation.
