Exhibition reaches its 12th year

Q

uality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will be marking its twelfth year in Parksville, with roots dating back to 1982. Attendance at the site has increased steadily, climbing from 62,000 to 99,000 in just the last three years, so event manager Trish Smith said they are optimistic they will break the 100,000 milestone this year, pushing the cumulative total over three quarters of a million since 1999. Smith said attendance depends quite a bit on the weather, but this year they are focusing on providing more entertainment and other draws in the park throughout the extended month long event to give people more to do while they're there and more — Auren Ruvinsky reason for locals to return.

Yes, there will be fireworks on the beach during this year's month of sand castles. Read about this year's KidFest in this booklet to find out more.

Saturday and Sunday are the main sand sculpting days. Kicking off bright and early at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, the sand artists have much of the first day to themselves to begin giving their work shape, with spectators only allowed into the fenced area starting 2 p.m. Much of the work can still be viewed through the fence, organizers point out. Using a special mixture of water and standard white-wood glue, the sand will be revealing their impressive forms and detail by the time they break for the evening. On Sunday they have until 3 p.m. to complete their visions before the judging begins, with the winners announced at 5:30 p.m. that evening. The sculptors have copies of the

judging sheets, to know what they will be looking for. There is also a people's choice award that spectators vote on

They also encourage people to check out activities like Tuesday and Wednesday evening beach volleyball and the Summer By the Sea Street Market on Craig Street just up the hill in downtown Parksville area every Tuesday evening. There are also many park facilities from the Lions' Ventureland children's park and water park, sports facilities and the famous beach itself. This year, Sand Sculpting Competition organizers are branching out to other events of their own, introducing an

Artisans at the Beach market on Sunday, July 24, a Big Splash Entertainment Weekend Aug. 5 to 7 and ongoing busking. "This summer we'd like to grow the event by offering more of a festive atmosphere," Smith said. "We are planning to organize a massive family-oriented entertainment weekend, with a large stage set up on the kite field, and we are also looking to showcase smaller local groups and soloists in the gazebo by the water for the rest of the summer." While the entertainment weekend is all booked (see more below), they are still accepting artisans for the market, which is filling fast, and a wide variety of musicians and street performers to busk in the gazebo on the beach,

his year a single big entertainment weekend is replacing the running Music in the Park series of previous years during the festival. Event manager Trish Smith said Music in the Park was growing too big for the picnic shelter, and when they looked at bringing in a temporary professional stage they figured they might as well put on a bigger show. This year the same three teams as last year will compete, Cutting Edge from Parksville, the Orbital Sanders from Seattle and last year's winners the Sandboxers from Victoria. Aside from the teams, there is

only one individual from Vancouver Island this year — from Victoria. There are three other B.C. solo entries, four competitors from Quebec and one from Prince Edward Island. There are also soloists coming from Texas and Ohio. Organizers are also happy to have last year's winner Bruce Waugh from Langley, B.C. returning to defend his championship this summer.

15

Soloists: • Brett Stocker San Jose del Cabo, México Formerly from Surrey, B.C., Brett has been a national and regional sand sculpting award-winner. He says the biggest challenge is keeping the sculptures up and getting them built in the allotted time. He has competed in Canada, the Canary Islands, Mexico and the United States. COUPON

Part of a Guinness world record A Nelson sculptor (in Parksvile July 16 and 17) put his skills to work recently to break a 20-year-old record for the world’s longest sandcastle. John McKinnon and Denis Kleine (another festival veteran), along with 22 other sculptors from around the world, traveled in June to the German island of Rugen on the Baltic Sea. The final measurement for the sandcastle was 27.5 km. Kleine and McKinnon built two castles. One was a more traditional castle, the second was made up of cubes; McKinnon called it a “picastle.”

Teams: • Cutting Edge – Parksville Years of Sculpting: 21 in sand, plus lifetimes in wood, clay, pottery, jewelry, ice, etc. (Combined years of team members). Claim to fame: 2010 3rd place, Team, QF Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition, Parksville; 2009 3rd place, Team, QF Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition, Parksville; Only local competing team. How did they first become involved in sand sculpting: Through the local event. Why the love for sand sculpting: We love how it is a family friendly hobby, occurs in the outdoors during summer, the natural beauty of the completed work, the unique difficulty, and the look on the spectators’ faces.

Judging the best sand castles The judges look for a wide variety of things when judging the work of the internationally renown sand sculptors. They look for an overall "wow factor," based on general impressions, whether funny, clever, or unusual carving techniques, as well as more nuanced and detailed factors. They look at overall sand use — did they use all the sand provided? — and artistic merit as well as the consistency, proportions and details. They judge the general balance of the design along with the use of shapes, shadows, originality, creativity and a consistent theme. They also look at technical difficulty, scrutinizing the use of impossible looking overhangs, cut-throughs, arches and delicate narrow elements, along with the sculptor's general control of the sand. There are even point deductions for violations of the rules.

— Auren Ruvinsky

What is the biggest challenge in sand sculpting: Creating an accurate representation of a recognizable object while facing the gravitational limitations of sand.

Tips: Don't be afraid of risk, it’s the fine details that make the piece. • Sandboxers – Victoria • Years of Sculpting: 100-plus. COUPON

KidFest popular with families

P

The busy day Sunday includes the 19th annual KidFest on the big field, full of vendors, community booths, live entertainment and many activities for the whole family. Children can have their face painted, hair sprayed, be tattooed, play games, create crafts, learn about nature and be entertained by a host of favourite children's performers. Things kick off at 10 a.m. with live performers running through the day to 3 p.m. including Will Stroet & the Backyard Band, Pied Pumpkin veteran Rick Scott, Kumbana Marimba and Afro Mumanzi, along with Tickles and

arksville's famous expanse of sand is often dotted with sandcastles throughout the summer, but expect a dramatic proliferation on Sunday, August 14. Hundreds of kids will hit the beach that day as part of KidFest and the Quality Foods Children's Sandcastle Competition, which is actually two family events for the price of one. Even better when that price is free! The fun starts at sundown Saturday night with the Quality Foods Festival of Lights fireworks, simulcast to music on 88.5FM The Beach.

If it wasn't for those volunteers While a lot of work goes into an event of the size of Parksville's annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition, event manager Trish Smith said this year they had a tremendous response from sponsors, volunteers and non-

profit groups who help run the site over the extended four week viewing period. They had over 30 non-profit groups apply for just 12 spaces overseeing the exhibition, who then share in the gate donations collected.
