Ocean mile swim held

The 54th annual Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim took place Sunday with Jared Abel taking first place again. There where 44 competitors taking the plunge this year, which was roughly average, said Anne Porteous with the Regional District of Nanaimo. She said attendance is somewhat weather dependent for this kind of event and, with the clouds out in force, Sunday’s attendance was lower than last year’s 55 people or the 2003 record of 67, but was still pretty good this year. The good news about the weather though is that, unlike in past years, there were no reports of swimmers getting stung by jellyfish this time around.

Company admits mistakes were made in original process and vows ongoing dialogue By NEIL HORNER NEWS REPORTER When municipal election season rolls around in November, Qualicum Beach voters can expect to see Teunis Westbroek’s name on the ballot, along with that of Mary Brouilette — but they won’t be vying for the same job. However, the other three spots around the council table will likely be filled with new faces after three of the councillor incumbents — Barry Avis, Jack Wilson and Kent Becker — announced their intention to at least potentially give it a miss. Westbroek confirmed this week he plans to run for a fifth term as mayor. “One of the things that really excites me is getting involved in the redevelopment of the school bus garage after several decades of the town trying to get that property,” he said. “I think it dovetails nicely with the arts and culture master plan.” He also cited the ongoing struggle to

keep Kwalikum Secondary School open as a key priority in the next term. Westbroek cited the renewal of the cemetery cenotaph, revitalization of the Community Hall, the retention of the Eaglecrest Golf Course as an 18-hole facility, increased beach and trail patrols, completion of the Dollymount trail, the setting up of a ferry bus, support for the farmers market, community garden, passage of the official community plan, movement towards electric vehicles and the completion of the Berwick reservoir, the initiative to and getting a new agreement with the Arrowsmith Water System as key accomplishments of council in the current term. Mary Brouilette said she intends to seek a second term at the council table. “I think they need me,” Brouilette said. “I think I represent a balance to council, so yes, I am going to run as a councillor.” SEE

Tributes pour in for Layton By AUREN RUVINSKY NEWS REPORTER Tributes poured in from across the country and among local politicians Monday with the surprising news of Jack Layton’s death from Cancer. Layton, 61, announced just under a month ago, he was taking time off as leader of the federal New Democrats to fight a new form of Cancer. “Our condolences on behalf of the town and council to Olivia and his family. It must be awful. God will comfort them and give them strength,” said Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek. Westbroek said he met Layton several times and was impressed by his grounding in municipal politics from his time on Toronto council. He also credited his leadership and work with

then finance minister Paul Martin, in bringing infrastructure benefits back to municipalities. Qualicum Beach has Layton’s efforts to thank for things like the ring road, roundabout and the gas tax returning to the community, Westbroek said. “I thank him for his social conscience.” “It’s been said and echoed by people all over that we lost a good leader,” said ParksvilleQualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “He raised the bar, he was determined to bring ethics to his work in politics, he was assertive without being aggressive, you could disagree but still have a conversation, he was a great listener.” Cantelon said the NDP leader, “Struck a very good tone in politics, he really conducted himself as someone to emulate.” SEE

Police are on the lookout for the driver of a pickup truck observed fleeing the scene after thieves broke into the Geogia Park Store in Bowser last week. Oceanside RCMP Sergeant Darrell Robertson said police responded to a reported break and enter in progress at the store at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 15, but the culprit or culprits had fled. Robertson said an older, dark-coloured Dodge pickup was seen by witnesses as it was leaving the area immediately after the theft. They said the truck was last seen heading south towards Parksville. He noted the rear of the vehicle was damaged when it was believed to have been used to force entry into the store. The unidentified culprits got away with about $2,000-worth of cigarettes and beer in the attack. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Oceanside Detachment of the RCMP at 250-248-6111. — News staff

Brouilette said one of the reasons she is putting her name forward for a second term is because she has a number of projects she would like to see through to completion. “In particular, things like the arts and culture master plan and seeing the high school saved. I want to take part in that process,” she said. “I also think there is an opportunity for other opinions with regard to attracting younger families in our area. That’s going to be a really big thing. I think the sustainability of our community is the main issue.” One key to sustainability, she added, is ensuring Qualicum Beach workers have access to an appropriate transportation system that allows them to access their jobs from their homes in less expensive areas in places such as Coombs, Qualicum Bay or Errington. table for Brouilette. Longtime councillor Jack Wilson announced last week his intention to hang up his political hat, stressing in an interview that he was tired after three terms on council, noting he often found himself frustrated at being in the minority position. “I’ve become a firm believer in term limits,” he said. Kent Becker meanwhile also confirmed he doesn’t plan to seek anther term as a councillor. Although this was Becker’s first term as a councillor in Qualicum Beach, he had previously served for many years in his former home in Coquitlam. Becker said he feels he has done his part for municipal politics and now wants to spend some quality time travelling with his wife. “I don’t think I am going to run,” he said. “I am looking at my age — I’m 67-years-old — and I’ve spent 18 years in the municipal arena on both sides of the water. I’m looking at taking some trips in our camper van to explore North America while we still can.” Becker said he has no regrets about his term on council and said he was proud of the many accomplishments they have been able to do.

Regional District digs into agriculture Area Agriculture Plan seeks to find ways to increase production By NEIL HORNER NEWS REPORTER The Regional District of Nanaimo is well aware that Vancouver Island farmers only produce about three per cent of the food consumed here, and they’re currently looking at ways to do something about it. That effort was on display at the recent Coombs fair, with RDN staffers Lisa Bhopal-Singh and Lenya Roat helping to get the message to area farmers and consumers that they’re looking for any good ideas they might have. “We’re beginning

a public engagement process,” Roat said. “It will be about a year until we get a draft plan, so there will be a lot of engagement and a lot of opportunity for people to give their input.” Bhopal-Singh said the RDN has formed an agricultural advisory committee, made up of farmers and other stakeholders, to oversee the plan. “We want a regionwide strategy on how we move forward on agricultural decisionmaking at the regional district,” she said. “We want to talk to people and find out what some of the barriers and opportunities they face in agriculture and, as a regional district, what we can do to help overcome those barriers.” She said some of the fixes could be simple, but others could well prove extremely complex. “It could be as simple as advocating to other levels of gov-

ernment,” she said. “We also might look at reviewing our bylaws ... to promote farming. The idea, she stressed, is to look at all the factors that influence farming at a regional level. She said farmers’ input is key, but everyone in Central Vancouver Island has a stake in the food supply, from producers to consumers, and she wants to hear from all of them. Although she conceded that much agricultural land lays fallow, it’s crucial to keep it available for farming, should the need and opportunity arise. “We are on an island and most of our food gets shipped in,” she said. “That leaves us very vulnerable, should there be some form of crisis that interrupts the flow of food.” To give input into the process, visit the website at www. growingourfuture.ca, or call toll-free 1-877607-4111. news@pqbnews.com

Errington comes alive At what other event in Oceanside can one expect to see a big, burly skirtclad man vying for a beauty queen crown mixed in with zucchini races, music, a parade, a dance and other family fun besides Errington’s Hi Neighbour Day? This year’s event boasted hot weather and a blue, sunny sky, resulting in a big turnout, great costumes and a whole lot of sometimes edgy family fun. Here, (clockwise from top) the colourful parade marches past the Errington Store. The annual Miss Errington pageant saw “Alessandra” from Libya put on an impressive belly dance. Yard sale at Christian Fellowship Centre to aid Horn of Africa

Even as the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa deepens, big-hearted residents of Oceanside are ramping up their efforts to help. The result to date, said Shannon Wiley, has been impressive. Wiley is one of the key organizers of the upcoming yard sale for African relief, slated to be held Sunday at the Christian Fellowship Centre in Qualicum Beach. “It’s been crazy,” she said. “The response from the community has been

amazing. People are responding to this desperate situation and we are overwhelmed by the generosity of this community.” Wiley said reports coming in from Somalia indicate there might be no rain there until February of 2012, meaning the crisis will only get worse. To this end, she said, volunteers are redoubling their efforts to get donations for their event, and the community is coming through with some remarkable items. “Someone gave us 12 pairs of brand new Birkenstocks,” she

said. “We’ve got spa treatments, beautiful art, a year’s worth of water, There will be at least 50 or 60 tables full of stuff — and the quality is top notch. We’ve been shocked at what’s coming in.” All monies raised, she said, will be split between World Vision and the Canadian Good Grains Bank. “The CFGB is matching four dollars to one, and the Canadian government is also matching until September 13,” she said. “This way as well we get to work with Canadian farmers.” Doors open at 10 a.m. and the sale wraps up at 3 p.m. at the Christian Fellowship Centre.

City crime mostly minor By AUREN RUVINSKY NEWS REPORTER When Oceanside RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter gave his semiannual crime stat update to Parksville council last week, he pointed out that the latest Crime Severity Index (CSI) was out and the city is doing very well. The relatively new measure is weighted to improve crime rate comparisons, weighing crimes like murder and physical assault higher than things like theft from vehicles, Hunter explained. While the city has been doing well

STAFF SGT. BRIAN HUNTER ... City is doing fairly well in terms of regular crime rates and crime numbers in general, it has made impressive gains in terms of the severity of the crime. For the 2011 ranking, using 2010 numbers, Statistics Canada ranked Parks-

ville 144 out of 238 Canadian cities with a population over 10,000. Ranking the worst cities highest, Parksville dropped an impressive 93 spots from number 51 last year. Looking at violent crime only, Parksville looks even better at 214th, dropping from 79th last year, meaning there are 213 cities in the country with a higher violent crime rating and just 24 better. “Parksville is virtually one of the safest communities in Canada to live in,” Hunter told council, pointing out that people are starting to look at the index when

thinking about where to move or vacation. The further you break the numbers down the better Parksville looks, ranking eighth best in the country in terms of violent crime among 53 similar sized cities between 10,000 and 15,000 for example. Comparing similar size cities within the province, Parksville is near the middle of the pack but the range is dramatic from Williams Lake and Prince Rupert, which are both in the national top ten worst violent crime to Comox and Summerland which are in the bottom ten with the lowest violent crime rating.

DUST MITES BITE! Research shows that the household dust mite, in particular its feces, is the most common cause of bronchial asthma and other chronic sinus or respiratory conditions. The periodic replacement of a mattress is one of the primary methods to control allergy causing dust mites. Mattresses provide the ideal environment for dust mites as a result of the moisture our bodies give off and the dead skin that we slough off, while we are sleeping. In general, the older the mattress the larger is the dust mite concentration, which will continue to grows for years, until the mattress reaches

maximum colonization. Even when the maximum density of dust mites is reached, the dead bodies and feces continue to build up over a longer period, and it’s primarily the dust mite’s feces that contribute to allergic reactions. While it’s unlikely that dust mites can be completely eliminated from your household, there are control measures that can be effective. Moisture is a primary environment for dust mites, and can be controlled with a dehumidifier and ventilation system. However, our bodies give off moisture while we sleep and, as a result, the highest

concentrations of dust mites eventually end up in our mattresses. Dust mite barriers that are constructed of fabric, rather than plastic, can be an effective method of control, particularly when combined with mattress replacement at reasonable intervals. A natural latex mattress is the most effective solution for allergic reactions to dust mites and their feces. Latex naturally resists dust mites and is hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and resistant to mold, mildew and fungus. When a latex mattress is combined with a natural wool cover, also naturally resistant to dust mites, the environment for dust mite

colonization is almost null. A natural wool cover, or an organic wool mattress pad, that can be removed and aired out for six hours or more on a sunny day will completely eliminate the possibility of dust mite colonization. Of course, the fact that natural latex is the most comfortable and durable of all sleeping surfaces, gives you a feeling for the finest choice available in quality mattresses.

It’s a good thing that most couples don’t want to have their wedding day fall on the 13th of the month because the picturesque property at Pacific Shores Resort and Spa in Nanoose was available for the Nature Trust of BC to hold a fundraiser for Moorecroft Regional Park on August 13. Despite superstitions surrounding the unlucky date, the event was blessed with great weather and generous donators, who brought the non profit land conservation organization even closer to its goal of raising $500,000 in the acquisition of the 85 acre oceanfront property once operated as a United Church camp in Nanoose. A total of 125 people paid $40 each to attend Splash 2011, a garden party which included gourmet food, champagne,

While the final tally from the event is still being counted organizers say people were generous in the silent auction and 50/50 draw. Tim Clermont, who is in charge of Habitat Securement Management for the Nature Trust of B.C., told the crowd of supporters that to date they have raised over $70,000 for Moorecroft even though they have only been fundraising for a

He thanked the many volunteers who have been working hard on the campaign and gave a special shout out to the Moorcrofters who have been setting up information booths at various farmers markets and venues in Oceanside to spread the word about the Moorecroft land. “They are great foot soldiers. The money they raise will mean we (The Nature Trust) will have more of a say over the park and the public will have access to it,” Clermont said. Proof that the Moorecrofters are getting the message out to the public came in the form of a single donation of $500 from a couple who stopped at the Moorecroft information booth at the Errington Farmers

Location: East of Jones St. to Hollywood Rd. Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2011 to Friday, September 16, 2011 Time: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The purpose of this testing is to locate any storm water service lines that have been inadvertently connected to the sanitary sewer mains. There appears to be greater flow in the sanitary sewer mains during heavy rainfall which indicates a possible cross connection of the two systems. When using the smoke testing method, a typical indication of storm water piping connected to the sanitary sewer would be smoke rising out of the roof gutters. Staff will be on site to record any indications of visible smoke. Normally this form of testing will not produce smoke within the household. If smoke does appear in the home there is no cause for immediate concern. It may be the result of a dry “P” trap in a drain within the house. The smoke used is non-toxic and will leave no residue. If you do notice any smoke within your home please contact the workers carrying out the testing on your street or call us at the telephone number listed below. Questions? Market on Saturday. Clermont says it was a huge boost to their $500,000 goal, which the Nature Trust will contribute to the purchase price of the ecologically significant property and key restoration work to important facilities as well as the nature trail infrastructure. Also working tirelessly on the campaign is Tracy Loewen the events co-ordinator of the Nature Trust of B.C. She said they only started planning Splash 2011 on May 13 and is pleased how it all came together after only three months. Loewen admits it could not have happened without a great venue and she said she can’t thank Pacific Shores Resort and Spa enough for stepping up and providing a perfect setting for the event. She worked closely with Atilla Cimsit, the resort’s Director of Food and Beverage to ensure that Moorecroft supporters would have a memorable experience. For Cimsit it was a great way to spread the word about Moorecroft. “It’s a noble cause. I hope we can turn it into an annual event,” said Cimsit. Another champion for the property which was purchased in the spring by the Regional District of Nanaimo in partnership with the Nature Trust of B.C. is Lyndia Terre. Mondays can be meatless It’s only one day and makes a difference to the planet

M Traffic was backed up from the crash site to Highway 4A near Coombs NEIL HORNER PHOTO Tuesday afternoon.

Passengers hurt in Hwy. 4 crash By NEIL HORNER NEWS REPORTER Six people were hurt, some of them seriously, in a multiple vehicle collision on Highway 4 Monday. Oceanside RCMP Sergeant Darrell Robertson reported the collision involved three vehicles just after 11 a.m. near the entrance to Little Qualicum Falls Park. Robertson said the results of a preliminary investigation indicate three passenger vehicles were involved. Four of the vehicle occupants sustained serious injuries and were airlifted by B.C. Air Ambulance to hospital from the scene. Two others suffered less serious injuries. Robertson said the status of the occupant’s remained unknown at press time and said the age and gender of the occupants will not be released at this point, as officers work to notify their family. Coombs Volunteer Fire Department Chief Darren Hillsden said his hall responded to the crash with one rescue company and one engine company and they were joined by three units from Qualicum Beach Fire Rescue, one from the Errington Fire Department and one from the Dashwood fire hall. Two helicopters and four ambulances also raced to the scene. Hillsden said it appears to have been a

head-on collision. He noted as well that initial reports which indicated a bus was involved were not accurate, noting a bus was indeed at the scene at the time of the crash but the driver was able to avoid hitting the stricken vehicles. He noted as well that while initial reports indicated eight people were injured in the crash, this was also proven to be inaccurate. Highway 4 was shut down while

emergency crews worked to evacuate the wounded and clean up debris from the crash. Vehicles were backed up as far as the Coombs junction and beyond. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash, and has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111. ario Batali, chef and reigning King of Italian cuisine, really caught my attention with his promotion of what he calls Meatless Mondays. From both an environmental and a health perspective, being less carnivorous is a good thing. Not only would this move help people loose weight and be healthier, but it would lighten the burden on the environment. Mario is one of thousands who pledges to eat meat less by one day per week. According to the Environmental Working Group’s Meat Eaters Guide to Climate change and Health, if people skipped eating meat and cheese only one day per week, after a year, it would be as if over seven million cars were pulled off the road. Cutting down oxygen producing forest to make meat producing pasture is

Medicine 101 By Dr. Tara Macart not a wise long term solution. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, (UNFAO) about a third of the Earth’s ice-free land is used directly or indirectly in livestock production. These animalbased operations generate almost 20 per cent of the world’s entire burden of greenhouse gasses. This is more than from transportation. With greenhouse gases mediated, the side effect of this movement would be less obesity and heart disease. Sadly, sacrifice of rainforest for meat

centered food production will not go unnoticed in our lifetime. Animals that feed on grain or rely on grazing require more water than grain crops. Considering it is less efficient than plant based food production, maybe we should rethink our overall dependence on meat. Doctor Thomas Campbell, author of The China Study, would applaud a food philosophy that includes less meat. He has been brave enough to suggest that low animal-based diets are healthier than more carnivorous ones. The vegan diet may even be more protective than previously thought when it comes to degenerative diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Perhaps we should have a “Meatout” like they did in Michigan. Hats off to Governor

Jennifer Granholm for declaring March 20 Michigan Meatout Day. She did it as an attempt to remind people that a wholesome diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains can significantly reduce exposure to pathogens, reduce risk of disease, and be a cost effective way to have a healthier lifestyle overall. I bet Mario Batali would be impressed by her stance. He knows our food choices impact our planet. He says “you don’t have to be a vegetarian to eat healthier.” Even small changes can make a big difference. You and your family could have tasty meatless Mondays. Even you can do it. o you want Qualicum Beach to grow rapidly or do you want it to stay pretty much the same? Are there issues you think should be addressed, but they haven’t been? Are you pleased with the way things are going in the municipality or are you mad as hell and not willing to take it anymore? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, this could well prove to be your lucky day. Not for a long time has the opportunity to stand up and be counted been so wide open. If there ever was a time for people to put their money where their mouths — or pens — are, this November’s municipal election could well be it. That’s because at least two and possibly three out of the four incumbent councillors have announced they won’t be seeking another term when voters go to the polls. Both Jack Wilson and Kent Becker have given a definite no, while Barry Avis won’t throw his hat into the ring until he knows whether or not he has won the provincial nomination for the NDP candidacy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all three of the — possibly — departing incumbents for their hard work and dedication over the past term in the case of Becker and over the past several in the cases of Wilson and Avis. We know just how hard these guys have worked for the betterment of the community — and it’s not inconsiderable. That said, their departure leaves a whole lot of opportunity for others who may feel they have something to contribute to the ongoing debate about the town’s future direction. The newcomers could well prove to be a majority in the next council. Any takers? — Editorial by Neil Horner

o there I was, blithely dogpaddling over a tropical reef, my mug immersed in a face mask, a snorkel huffing and spewing just over my right ear. I was admiring the insanely colourful, impossibly beautiful reef fishies flitting and fluttering all around me when I spied something that was … the opposite of beautiful. It was mottled brown and grey, about a foot in length and lying partially buried in the sand about five feet beneath the surface of the sea. I was pretty sure it was some kind of life form but it was immobile and strikingly butt-ugly. It looked like a not-very-good potter had started to fashion a fish shape out of inferior clay, found it beyond his powers and abandoned the attempt. I was trying to prod the lump with one of my swim fins when a tiny voice bubbled up in my ear murmuring “You probably shouldn’t mess with that.” When I got ashore I made a sketch of the critter and when The Parksville Qualicum Beach News is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. I got near an encyclopaedia, I looked it up. Just as well I hadn’t managed to arouse the thing. It was a stonefish; pound for pound the most venomous fish in the sea. Its dorsal fin features thirteen thorn-sharp, poisonfilled spines, each one of which contains enough bad stuff to offer an agonizing death to any creature luckless enough to get jabbed by it. Well, a tropical climate, what do you expect? It’s a jungle out there, bucko. Some equatorial countries feature cockroaches the size of skateboards and enough deadly creepy crawlies to star in their own horror movie. ‘Peligro’ was one of two words I saw hand-lettered on a sign on a beach near Zihuatenejo, Mexico years ago. The sign was jammed in the sand in front of a big log. The other word on the sign was ‘co-

codrilo’. ‘Peligro’ I knew, means danger. But ‘cocodrilo’? Gee, sounds a little bit like ‘crocodile’… And that’s when the log moved its tail. By But you don’t Arthur have to visit a SpanBlack ish-speaking country to find hostile wildlife. Look at Australia — 14 different types of poisonous snakes, the deadly funnel-web spider, the equally toxic redback spider, plus virulent jellyfish, sea snakes, lionfish, scorpionfish, stinging coral, Great White sharks … And oh yeah – crocodiles. Saltwater crocodiles. Up to 20 feet long, a ton and a half heavy, lightning-quick and more than happy to chow down on filet de Homo sapiens extra rare whenever they can. Survive all that and you can still get walloped by wallabies, KO’d by koala bears or run into a kangaroo capable of punching your lights out.

Question OF THE

Week

But the Australian outback pales when compared to India, where you can be eaten by tigers, clawed by leopards, gored by elephants, punctured by cobras and otherwise seriously interfered with by a witches brew of rodents, mammals, reptiles … And insects. You leery about angry hornets? Allow me to introduce you to Vespa madarinia, also known as the Asian Giant Hornet. How giant? The size of a small bird. The Japanese, who also know the creature, have other names for it. One is ‘suzume bachi’, which translates as ‘sparrow hornet.’ The other common name is ‘yak killer hornet”. Guess how it earned that name. If Australian wildlife is dangerous, Indian wildlife is a Stephen King novel waiting to be written. Small wonder India suffers a mortality rate that’s about 30 times higher than Australia. Kind of makes you glad you

live in a Disneyish, Hobbity unthreatening country like Canada where we plaster our coins with laughing loons and goofy Rudolph reindeer knockoffs and the national mascot is a nearsighted rodent with buck teeth and a pancake tail. I mentioned (a tad smugly) this innate Great White North superiority to an Aussie friend who’s been living in Canada for a few years. He snorted. “Fair crack o’ the whip, myte,” he retorted. “You’ve got a country with polar bears, grizzlies, killer whales, wolverines, rattlesnakes, giant elk, packs of wolves and horny moose with enough armour on their skulls to tip over a car. You’ve got clouds of bloodsucking deer flies, horse flies, black flies, noseeums and mosquitoes big enough to carry off small children. Safe? Unthreatening? Starve the lizards! Give me the Outback any day.” He had a point. Several points, actually. And he hadn’t even mentioned Don Cherry.

Logging to be sad day for Oceanside

Change is coming

Its a sad day for Mt. Arrowsmith and the people off Oceanside! The CPR trail located across the highway at the south end of Cameron Lake is scheduled for logging. Island Timberlands is going to log the last foot accesses to Mt. Arrowsmith. After clear cutting sections of the lower Ralph Rosseau trail that went from the back of Cathedral Grove, it is now unusable. With the proposed road building and clear cutting they are going to destroy the last foot access to the Arrowsmith Park. This trail has been heavily used for over 100 years. Canada’s famous explorers Don and Phyllis Munday hiked this trail in the 1920s and from the top they discovered their “Mystery Mountain” due north in the coast range later to be named Mt. Waddington — the largest fully in Canada. Island Timberlands has no respect for the past or the future of this community or our love of the outdoors. What good is having a mountain park that you have to drive miles of clear cuts to get to?

his week the comet Elenin, a menacing yet vaguely understood body of ice, dirt and rock, will hurtle itself into direct alignment to the Earth and our Sun. Perhaps not surprisingly, this is also the week that foretells of powerful economic, social and political disruptions on our planet. No happy event this: both astrological and astrophysical calculations also strongly suggest that the coming dates of alignment — August 18, September 26, October 17, November 2 to 7 and November 11 — will mark every increasing moments of tectonic turbulence, solar activity and magnetic or electrical disruptions throughout our planetary system. In fact, recent alignments with Elenin are thought to have triggered the February 11 8.8 earthquake in Chile and the devastating March 11 9.5 earthquake in Japan. And, unfortunately, the upcoming alignments promise to be much stronger. I suspect, however, that this will also mark the beginning of a new era. Financial corruption, outdated political systems and dehumanizing social structures will now dramatically fade. Over the next four to five months we will witness remarkable world events and the emergence of a fast social change. Those that before were impoverished, politically silenced or marginalized will exercise a new public voice. And the hidden, wealthy and manipulative will be challenged as never before. Not a coincidence, not a chance.

Yet another weight loss myth Some articles should not go unchallenged. Dr. Tara McCart’s column, The HcG Diet, Fact or Fiction (THE NEWS, Aug. 16) was one of these. To be upfront, I am an MD, retired from a career in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. I have no training or experience in weight-loss management. I have felt for years that nostrums promoted by naturopaths should be subjected to the same scientific scrutiny as are traditional pharmaceuticals. HcG refers to the natural-occurring hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone is secreted in

large quantities by the placenta during all normal pregnancies, and is essential in the fetal development. It’s the same hormone that’s used for performance enhancement by athletes. It’s difficult to detect in the user’s blood or urine, and stimulates the production of testosterone. It has never been shown conclusively to stimulate fat breakdown, to spare normal fat, causing abnormal fat to be lost, nor to confer a tendency to conserve carbohydrates and favour fat combustion to make calorie restrictions more tolerable. It is a protein, as are all hormones, and as such is broken down by the acid and enzymes of the gastrointestinal tract when taken by mouth. Even in its injectable form,

it has a short half-life in the body. What is meant by calorie restrictions? The current recommendation by the hCG promoters is to restrict food intake to between 500 and 700 calories per day while hCG is being administered by mouth. Do you know what a 500- calorie a day menu looks like? You’d be allowed for breakfast one cup of tea with stevia for sweetening and up to one teaspoon of skim milk, and at mid-morning one medium apple. Eagerly awaited lunch brings a 100- gram piece of boneless and skinless chicken breast, a sliced tomato drizzled with balsamic vinegar and pepper, and one breadstick. The evening meal, dinner, allows for a 100 gram piece of filet mignon (all visible fat removed),

100 grams of salad greens drizzled with the juice of one lemon. And before bedtime you could have 100 grams of sliced strawberries. Patients on this diet have liked it to being on a forced death march. According to Health Canada, no properly conducted clinical study has ever shown the benefit of adding hCG to a severely restrictive diet. To quote a recent article from the Los Angeles Times, “If dieters lose weight on the regimen, the effect is from the ultralow-calorie diet, most studies have concluded, and the hCG is a placebo.” If hCG is so effective in helping folks lose weight, its advocates are obliged to prove their claim through scientific studies.

Seniors’ poverty a provincial disgrace The taxpayer funded campaign ad for Ron Cantelon that appeared in your April 16 issue trumpets the Liberal record in supporting seniors. He fails to mention, of course, that B.C. has the highest rate of low-income seniors in all of Canada; and, for the seventh year in a row, provincial spending on health care is below the national average. If the government is going to use our tax dollars to finance campaign advertisements for Liberal MLAs, at least they should include a few facts.

s my sister-inlaw’s ex-military husband sank into his confined world of alcoholism, she refused to shrink along with him. She was very clear she would not go through another divorce. Instead, she vigorously pursued her garden, bridge and investment club activities. She maintained a strong bond with her middle-aged daughter and many friends … until cancer ended her life. Her approach was not typical. To her credit, she chose to look after herself, rather than adjusting her behavior to keep the marriage in balance. Generally, if one party to the marriage changes, the other adjusts to keep things in balance. If either of them refuses to adjust, the other one may readjust to regain balance. When both refuse to adjust, typically they eventually end the marriage, but they may just lead separate lives within the marriage framework. Far more frequent-

ly as one partner to a marriage increasingly abuses alcohol, the other adjusts to keep the marriage in balance. And that is what happens to a couple when one becomes addicted to alcohol and the other becomes codependent. I’ll use the example of the alcoholic male and codependent female. It could be the other way around of course. They both drank when they married, but when they started to have children she curtailed her drinking to just the occasional drink. Their children are now in their teens. He gradually increased the frequency and amount of his alcohol consumption. Now he is never without a drink in his hand when he is at home after work, and he often gets drunk on weekends. If either the alcohol abuser or the codependent is you, nothing will change because your marriage is well-balanced. Nothing will change, that is, unless one of you chooses to step out of your addiction and create a life for yourself … and then does it. You may ask, “What will happen to my marriage?” In my case, when I overcame my alcohol addiction, my wife left me. There are no guarantees. But if you want a life, you’ll have to rock the boat. ast year a new paved trail in Qualicum Beach opened up an easy and peaceful walk or ride behind The Gardens and KSS. The Dollymount Trail is well used and well loved. So far, I haven’t found out why the trail was so named, but perhaps it was after “a suburban area on the north coast of Dublin Bay” or “a village in the east part of Dublin.” Whatever the origin of its moniker, my dear wheelchairbound friend at The Gardens and I often enjoy some R & R along its first section on warm evenings. This past week, one trail evening turned into a veritable natural history tour after I was told with

an accompanying pointed finger, “Stop! Back up … a little more … there; what is that tree?” Once I had sorted out which tree among the many along the trail was in question, we determined by its leaf and shiny black berries that it was a Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana). The common name of this rather innocuous tree always reminds me of the syrupy brown medicine sometimes urged upon me as a child for a laxative. Do you remember the product called Castoria? A knowledgeable B.C. plant book offers this tongue twister for the benefits of the Cascara. “The hydroxymethylanthraquinones it contains cause …” Save that one for your next Scrabble game! The most prominent shrub leaning into the path was Ocean Spray (Holodiscus discolor). It’s easy to see

the only truly native B.C. blackberry, the trailing blackberry (Rubus ursinus) snaking its lowly way from the disturbed ground it favors toward the light of the trail. Though probably the Rubus with the most intense flavor, this plant is a booby trap of the first order. Its stealthy vines creep along the ground, over rocks, stones, and fallen logs, just waiting to ensnare an unwary foot and hang on with its backward curving thorns. The trailing blackberry may have tried to make amends for its grasping nature by providing potions of its autumn-red leaves and its roots to serve as an all purpose medicine. It was believed to relieve dysentery, mouth sores, and haemorrhoids, not to mention cholera and PMS! Our natural science discussion ended as we moved back toward the trail head and commented on those bunches of little insects whirling erratically and highlighted by the lowering sunlight — never alighting on anything, just whirring around. Said Will, “We always called those ‘middleof-the-room’ flies.”

well. Growing abundantly in the lower storey of the trail’s woods were the thimbelberries, (Rubus parviflorus) most of their soft, bright red, cap-shaped berries now eaten by birds or beyond their prime. While smaller and more fragile than blackberries or salmonberries and usually thought to be inferior and insipid tasting, if one has the patience to pick the easily crumbling berries, they do make a tasty jelly. Another positive attribute is that the thimbleberry goes about unarmed – i.e. it has no thorns. The thimbleberry puts on its best show in late spring through July when its large, fuzzy, maple-shaped leaves provide a brilliant background for the long stemmed, crinkly white blossoms. On the west coast of the Island, thimbleberries were once dried along with smoked clams, and the plant’s young shoots were collected to be eaten raw. Other people overcame the berry’s lack of flavor by mixing the lowly thimbleberry with wild raspberries and blackberries. Still with the Rubus family, we saw

how it got its last name when its early creamy blooms are one of the commonest sights along Island roadsides, but … come late summer, fall, and through the winter they dangle from the branches in drab plumes of brown. Especially in early days, the wood of Ocean Spray (sometimes called ‘ironwood’ because of its strength) had multiple uses among indigenous peoples. Made even harder by heating, the wood was rubbed (sanded) with horsetails to be used in bows and arrows, as digging sticks, and spear and harpoon shafts. It also came in handy for making fish hooks and even knitting needles. Before metal nails arrived on the scene, Ocean Spray pegs did a good job of holding things together. Doesn’t a stout branch sound just right for roasting weenies or toasting marshmallows over the campfire? In opposition to the aforementioned Cascara, the browned flower clusters of Ocean Spray were used to make an infusion for the relief of diarrhea and was thought to aid in recovery from measles and chickenpox as

Entrepreneurship can be sticky

DOUBLE DECADE

By NEIL HORNER NEWS REPORTER

Twenty years is a long time in just about any area of endeavor, but that’s particularly true in the business world, where the vast majority of enterprises go under within one, maybe two years of operation. However, Lesley’s Esthetics and Accessories can boast that they’ve been able to survive — and thrive in Parksville for the past 20 years after holding their 20th anniversary bash at the store on Thursday. Here, Lesley Osborne cuts the cake.

Visitors to Errington’s Hi Neighbour Day event first had to get past Cameron Mazey and his stick. The 10-year-old entrepreneur wasn’t about to hit anyone with the polished walking canes however. He just wanted to sell a few of them. Mazey, in partnership with his grandfather, Cliff Topham, formed their outfit, called Storm Sticks, last year. “We call it that because we never cut down any standing sticks,” Mazey said. “We go out every time there has been a big

wind storm and we get the ones off the ground.” Mazey said his grandfather takes care of the production end of things, while he focuses mainly on sales. Mazey said he doesn’t make a regular habit of selling the sticks at the Errington Farmers’ Market, focusing specifically on Hi Neighbour Days, as there is enough traffic to make it worthwhile. However, anyone who would like to order a stick can get hold of Topham at 250248-3891 and he will be happy to set one aside for you. news@pqbnews.com

Understanding the bond market is crucial

U

nderstanding the price fluctuation of bonds is probably one of the most confusing things for investors. In fact, many new investors are surprised to learn that a bond’s price changes on a daily basis, just like that of any other publicly-traded security. Some investors hold their bonds to maturity. It’s true that if you do this you’re guaranteed to get your principal back; however, a bond does not have to be held to maturity. At any time, a bond can be sold in the open market, where the price can fluctuate

— sometimes dramatically. We’ll get to how price changes in a bit. First, we need to introduce the concept of yield. Yield is a figure that shows the return you get on a bond. The simplest version of yield is calculated using the following formula: yield = coupon amount/price. When you buy a bond at par, yield is equal to the interest rate. When the price changes, so does the yield. Let’s demonstrate this with an example. If you buy a bond with a 10% coupon at its $1,000 par value, the yield is 10 per cent

($100/$1,000). Pretty simple stuff. But if the price goes down to $800, then the yield goes up to 12.5 per cent. This happens because you are getting the same guaranteed $100 on an asset that is worth $800 ($100/$800). Conversely, if the bond goes up in price to $1,200, the yield shrinks to 8.33 per cent ($100/$1,200). So what is yield to maturity? Of course, these matters are always more complicated in real life. When bond investors refer to yield, they are usually referring to yield to maturity (YTM). YTM is a more

Where it Counts By Stuart Kirk advanced yield calculation that shows the total return you will receive if you hold the bond to maturity. It equals all the interest payments you will receive (and assumes that you will reinvest the interest payment at the same rate as the current yield on the bond) plus any gain (if

you purchased at a discount) or loss (if you purchased at a premium). So how do we put this all together? The relationship of yield to price can be summarized as follows: when price goes up, yield goes down and vice versa. Technically, you’d say the bond’s price and its yield are inversely related. Here’s a commonly asked question: How can high yields and high prices both be good when they can’t happen at the same time? The answer depends on your point of view. If you are a bond

buyer, you want high yields. A buyer wants to pay $800 for the $1,000 bond, which gives the bond a high yield of 12.5 per cent. On the other hand, if you already own a bond, you’ve locked in your interest rate, so you hope the price of the bond goes up. This way you can cash out by selling your bond in the future. Bonds are an integral part of a well diversified portfolio. Bonds are rated by rating agencies and they are available by issuers like federal and provincial governments, municipalities and corporations.

Vancouver’s Silk Road Duo will perform at The Old School House Sunday, Aug 28.

World Music duo returns to Qualicum By LISSA ALEXANDER NEWS REPORTER Residents have the opportunity see multicultural world music at its finest this Sunday as the Silk Road Duo makes its way back to the area for a performance at The Old School House. Husband and wife team Qui Xia He and Andre Thibault have been making music together and touring for the past 15 years, delighting audiences in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. In 2004, they were featured with the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Qui Xia He is a master of the pipa, also known as the

Chinese lute. She has been playing the instrument since she was a young child after being selected to attend an arts oriented elementary school in China. At age 13 she was performing in a professional group and by her mid 20’s she was teaching the instrument at the Xian Academy of Music. While performing with a professional group in Vancouver she decided to stay in the city. Qui Xia He founded Silk Road Music in 1991, which ranges from a duo to a full troupe. Thibault is from Montreal and has been playing the guitar for about 45 years. He became captivated by Flamenco music some time ago, and has also become proficient in playing the oud (middle Eastern lute), the hulusi (a Chinese reed flute) and various other percussion and wind instruments. The duo plays original music as well as some tradi-

tional folk songs from around the world. Thibault said one thing the audience can count on at the upcoming show is being engaged. “Our show is very audience friendly,” he said. “We try and keep it fun and upbeat, there are tender ballads and beautiful moments but we try and keep it fun and interesting.” The couple will play a number of instruments at TOSH as well as sing, and they always explain the origins of the instruments, Thibault said, making the shows very informative as well as musically interesting. The Sill Road Duo will play at TOSH Sunday, August 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $16. For more information visit www.theoldscholhouse. org or call 250-752-6133.

Onlookers enjoy a painting by local FCA signature status artist Don Farrell at an art show currently running at TOSH.

Top FCA artists show at TOSH The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) is hosting the first ever showing in Qualicum Beach of Signature Status artists from the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA). The FCA is a community of artists and art lovers, founded in 1941 by a influential artists including the Group of Seven's Lawren Harris. It continues as a non-profit organization with chapters throughout Canada dedicated to raising standards and pushing artists to greater achievements. Supporting Memberships are available to everyone who loves art and would like to learn more about artists, their work and planned events and courses. To participate in juried shows artists can apply for Active Membership and established artists can apply for Signature Status. The Oceanside area is home to many of these artists, including Don Farrell who was elected as a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour in 1984 and to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1986 when he also became an FCA senior member. He has exhibited at

the Royal Academy in London as well as art fairs in London and New York. Another local FCA Signature Status member is Donna Baspaly. Her art career spans more than thirty years and is in five art galleries in B.C. She has exhibited in Japan, Australia and the U.S. Also from the Oceanside area is Sherry Mitchell, who has been a botanical watercolour photorealist and illustrator for 40 years and has received awards for her work regionally, nationally and internationally over the past 25 years. Brent Lynch, a powerful landscape and figurative painter, has enjoyed an influential and awardwinning career in the arts and is also among these artists. Also included from our area are Therese Johnston, Bonnie Luchtmeijer and Marilyn Coons. The exhibition is open now until September 10. TOSH will also host an exhibition of the local chapter (Arrowsmith Chapter) of the FCA from October 11 to November 4. — Submitted by The Old School House Arts Centre

The oldest competitor was Gordon Reeves Webb at 67 and Reese Abel, at 10, was the youngest. Complete results will be available hardcopy and online at www.rdn.bc.ca/oceanmileswim by Wednesday.

Tourists love kayaks By JAMES CLARKE PQ NEWS SPORTS

Outsider Store owner Michael Addiscott, above during a paddle off the shores of Qualicum Beach — that’s someone in one of his rentals paddling by in the background — has brought in a number of new boats ideal for people new to the sport. JAMES CLARKE PHOTO

The tourist count may be down but the water is still dotted with kayakers, windsurfers and paddleboarders this summer. In Qualicum Beach, people can rent kayaks or the equally sturdy sit-on-top ocean boats through the Outsider On The Beach shop located beside the public washrooms by 4-Pole beach. This is Stephen Mitchell’s sixth summer renting kayaks in QB, the last two for Outsider, The Outdoors Store. Mitchell said he hasn’t seen any statistics yet, but from what he’s seeing this is the worst summer in terms of tourist count. ‘The worst. For sure. The rental shop is open from around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily depending on the weather. “It’s great, said Stephen, a nationally certi-

fied sea kayak instructor. “I have the best office in the world. I get to meet people from all over the world, and nobody ever comes back from kayaking unhappy — they always come back with a smile. The fleet of new rentals, said Outsider store owner Michael Addiscott, are perfect for the area and for the type of clients they cater to, adding the town has been very supportive in his efforts to offer people rentals on the beach. “It’s very much in keeping with the type of outdoor actives that people are attracted to here ...you don’t have to be a serious mountain biker to enjoy the mountain bike trails, you don’t have to be a serious hiker to enjoy the walking trails, and you don’t have to be a serious kayaker... it’s an area that really encourages participation by everybody, he said, adding the rental boats “are a great way to get out on the water and see the beach from a different perspective. For more information call 250-752-6610. UP THE ROAD, Kevin Forsythe and Mark Kiefer at Windsurfing Parksville, located off the boardwalk on Parksville Bay, have also brought in new toys this summer to get people on the water. For more information see them in person or call 250-951-9873.
