You can't get much better information that this: free hugs. It's a direct link to a better quality of life.
Information is the key to quality of life ith populations in both Parksville and Qualicum Beach that include a large percentage of seniors, it’s only natural that the community as a whole has tailored much of its services and organizations around assisting our elders with their everyday needs. As a retirement community, Oceanside as a region provides plenty for seniors, as do private care facilities, local businesses and volunteer-based organizations — from social advocacy to music and theatre groups. Within this guide, there are a multitude of resources to choose from and plenty of activities to fill the days. Take your pick. And enjoy. As Canada’s population continues to age, more and more government and public resources are being made available to seniors, their families and to local community organization who work with the elderly. It's a growing issue in District 69, as places like Qualicum Beach and Parksville become known more and more for their population of seniors. Organizations like seniors resource and activity centres, provincial government offices and the
W
Society of Organized Services (SOS) in Parksville, offer information and direction and help people get in touch with resources, both local, provincial and federal. SOS seniors co-ordinator Christine Jiggins says they provide a variety of information services for seniors in District 69. In fact, the SOS has become one of the largest local single stops for seniors if they want information on local programs. The SOS is a resource of people all of its own. Jiggins works hard to find out what people need. "We do our best to find out seniors' needs," she explains. "Our programs, like the Seniors Talking group, is about education. We have about 100 members and they meet weekly to discuss any topic of their choice — health, finances, exercise and more." Yet, for the SOS that's only the beginning. They have people, like Jiggins, who can get seniors in touch with the resources they need about any topic of concern. You'll read more about this in the other sections of this directory. To reach the SOS, call 250-248-2093 or drop in at 245 West Hirst Ave.

Residents of The Gardens in Qualicum Beach enjoy some leisure time in the lounge.
A secure, safe home for area seniors he beauty of Oceanside has been attracting people for generations and in recent decades it has become a favourite retirement destination for its good weather, scenery and active lifestyle. Though vacancy rates are historically low, the region offers a variety of housing options for the area’s large senior population ranging from single family developments to all levels of assisted living. The area boasts a healthy development industry building condos and single family homes that may be just a little more physically accessible than in other regions, up to various forms of adult only facilities, senior specific housing and assisted living options. The region also has an increasing number of assisted living options for those who need different levels of long-term care but are generally able to get around. The options include care facilities like Eagle Park and The Gardens in Qualicum Beach, while in Parksville there's Stanford Place, Trillium Lodge, Cokely Manor Arrowsmith Lodge and the new

Hustwick Place (pictured above), built by the local Lions Club. In addition, groups like the Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion branches and others operate seniors living apartments throughout the district. The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s assisted living program provides rental accommodation with hospitality services and personal care assistance for seniors and people with physical disabilities. It supports independence and community living for people who need a safe environment and help to manage daily living tasks. Publicly funded assisted living is provided by VIHA, often in conjunction with BC Housing through Independent Living BC and in partnership with private and non-profit operators. If there is permanent decline in someone’s health, a significant increase in care needs, or an inability to make decisions on their own, people may move from assisted living to a higher level of care. Many of the area's facilities include independent living with virtually no help, up to residential care options that provide 24-hour professional care.

SENIORS HOUSING & ASSISTED LIVING
There are a variety of organizations in District 69 that cater to seniors - including the Rainbow Stew Cloggers.
So many seniors ser vices, so little time hen seeking out senior-specific information and resources on matters such as health, special interest groups or local fitness opportunities it can be hard to know where to begin. There are a few places in District 69 worth considering as places to save a lot of time while finding out more about opportunities and services available locally. Seniors centres in Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qualicum Beach are logical places to begin. Some numbers to jot down as contacts of interest might include the local chapter of the Old Age Pensioners Club at 752-8217 and the Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association (248-3210) an indispensable resource for anyone looking to stay active in an atmosphere that promotes camaraderie. A comprehensive resource those in the know turn to, is the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Active living Guide. In it you’ll find a community directory with hundreds of listings on everything from service clubs to recreational groups. The guide can be found at Oceanside Place arena, Ravensong Aquatic Centre and Parksville’s Community and Conference

Centre. And at the Society of Organized Services (SOS) in Parksville, there’s a seniors co-ordinator available by appointment to address any inquiry. Christine Jiggins is that co-ordinator and she can put just about anyone in touch with just about any service, organization or resource that they may require. "We aim to please," she says. "We are a community-supported, non-profit facility ... we help those who can help themselves." Jiggins says they have programs for almost anyone, including: • Seniors Talking Group — any topic, any week. • Seniors in Motion Program — a one-on-one program to help people identify their specific needs, from health challenges to tax help, and which resources are available to solve their issues. • Meals on Wheels — food prepared at the Eagle Park care facility delivered three time each week. • SOS Christmas Program and more. "There are a lot of seniors in our community," says Jiggins. "We're trying to connect with them and help them maintain a better quality if life."

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION FOR SENIORS
Local police are instrumental in some senior-friendly initiatives, such as annual scooter safety rodeos.
Living in a safe and secure community s the years roll by, the words safety and security take on ever more import. In Oceanside communities though, with some of the highest percentages of senior citizens in the entire nation, those words are especially resonant. Fortunately, the demographic is no secret, and groups and agencies, from municipalities and the regional district to the RCMP and community groups, have taken those words to heart. One of the first needs when senior citizens come to a new community in that regard, says the Parksville Seniors Activity and Drop In Centre. To this end, both the centre and the Qualicum Beach Seniors Activity Centre have much to offer. On top of the support offered by the seniors centres, both Parksville and Qualicum Beach boast very active newcomers clubs — made up largely of seniors — which do their part to make sure newlyarrived seniors feel welcome. The RCMP also takes a big role in helping seniors stay safe and secure. The police have instituted some innovative pro-
A
grams to help seniors feel secure. Besides the usual Block Watch and Speed Watch programs, local police have run several scooter rodeos, to make sure the ever-growing number of scooters on the roads are driven safely. Similarly, they have put in place programs to help seniors remain safely behind the wheel of their motor vehicles for as long as possible. The municipalities are no slouches either, with both Parksville and Qualicum Beach making a point to make their respective downtowns as easy to get around in as possible for those with limited mobility. As a backstop, the Oceanside Community Response Network runs a program called Gatekeepers, which encourages people concerned about the health, safety or wellbeing of a vulnerable senior to call their help line at 250-248-0455. There are many more services and programs, as one might expect in such a senior-rich area, which add up to make Oceanside if not the safest and securest areas for seniors in the country, at least near the very top of the list.

SENIORS SAFETY & SECURITY
Mid-Island activities and organizations are geared towards keeping the older set fit and financially stable.
A balance between health and security ceanside, with its large senior population, offers a wide array of health and educational services targeted to older users. There are a particularly large number of valuable educational opportunities available seniors through the Regional District of Nanaimo Recreation and Parks department and Vancouver Island University. The Parksville VIU campus offers a number of different Adult Basic Education, Continuing Education and university transfer type courses open to anyone but also offers the unique ElderCollege. ElderCollege, available to people 50 or over, offers a variety of general interest classes taught by volunteers, which members can access through an annual membership and low per-course fees. It offers a more participatory learning experience than usual college classes with no quizzes or grades and a lot of lively, informative discussion. The Society of Organized Services (SOS) runs its Seniors Are Talking group on a regular basis. Not only do participants discuss important issues, SOS seniors co-ordinator Christine Jiggins says they take part in exercise, like drop-in yoga sessions and
O
other low-impact activities. Field trips, she adds, are popular, with recent outings to Comox, Coombs and Chemainus — not to mention local beaches. "We encourage seniors to learn about balance and fall prevention as well," Jiggins says. "And always, we try to keep the programs fun." Doctors in Oceanside (some may still accepting patients) have put a large dent in the waiting patient lists and there is much optimism that the community will gain a new health care centre and multi-purpose medical clinic as the result of an ongoing process between the Vancouver Island Health Authority, the local communities and health service providers in Oceanside. The SOS offers a tax preparation program, helping low income seniors file returns, This, says Jiggins, helps ensure people get the proper paperwork completed, allowing the SOS to ensure each client gets the benefits (pharmacy, Old Age Pension) to which they are entitled. Add to the mix the many local financial advisors who have senior-friendly plans and advice, and you can see the entire picture of physical and emotional health taking shape.

Parksville, Qualicum Beach and environs are hubs for car shows, jazz, community theatre and a whole lot more.
Oceanside is a ver y active place he last thing senior citizens want to do when they finally retire from a lifetime of work is to sit at home, watching the paint dry. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of fun and meaningful activities for seniors to enjoy, as long as they make the effort to take advantage of them. Lawn bowling clubs are some of the recreational jewels of the Island. The Qualicum Beach club is one of the few facilities in North America that has both indoor and outdoor greens. One of the key activities that draws seniors to regard the Oceanside area as a retirement haven is the ability to play golf virtually year-round at any of the seven courses (and three mini-golf courses) in the area. The Regional District of Nanaimo offers swimming programs tailored to seniors at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach, as well as courses in everything from line dancing to nutrition. As well, the four Probus clubs give retirees from the business world an opportunity to maintain a social network and have fun while doing so.
T
Both the Parksville and Qualicum Beach seniors centres also have much to offer. Although the participants are older, that doesn’t mean they can’t keep up with technology and trends, with courses about computers available at the centre, as well as the latest in Wii games, to allow seniors to keep fit in a fun and — should they choose — competitive atmosphere. For those who want to be pampered, the area also offers several luxurious spas, where seniors can enjoy the best their golden years have to offer. The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association can get people in touch with sports from hockey and track to slo-pitch and the local BC Seniors Games representatives. The medals they bring home are testament to the fact you're never too old to try something new. There are also opportunities to get involved in the many events each year in District 69. Organizers are always looking for volunteers and the lifetime of experience and expertise that one brings to a community, is always welcome. Staying active is easy to do in Oceanside.

SENIORS LEISURE & RECREATION
Seniors in Oceanside really know how to get from point A to point B.
On the move: transportation in Oceanside or some getting older means an increasing reliance, or even dependence, on alternative means for getting around. Fortunately there’s an established network of options to suit the needs of most seniors requiring transportation — whether that reason be limited mobility or just not having access to a car. HandyDart is one well known offering, available by appointment for those unable to access traditional transit, but there are other options in the community as well. The Society of Organized Services offers a van for delivery to workshops at their downtown Parksville location and also has a by-donation volunteer program that will ferry seniors to medical appointments, and back to their homes, in either Parksville or Qualicum Beach. Seniors co-ordinator for the SOS Christine Jiggins, says the Medical Transport Program helps those in needs get to local health appointments. They have 40 volunteers ready to offer a ride. AS well, the SOS can help people access bus passes for ether HandyDart or BC Transit. They
F
even have senior volunteers willing to work with newcomers to the area (or to public transportation for that matter) on how to master the bus routes and schedules. "It's the Seniors Without Wheels program," Jiggins explains. "Sometimes, it can be intimidating to go on your own." To find out more on SOS medical transport — and how they can also get people in touch with local businesses that provide rides, shopping services and more — call 250-248-2093. For longer distance medical appointments in Nanaimo, Courtenay or Port Alberni, Wheels for Wellness is a by-donation service that can assist. Call 1-250 338-0196. Of course Oceanside is seeing gradually improved transit service as well. The latest is a morning bus from Ravensong Aquatic Centre that runs direct to the ferry terminal in Nanaimo with dedicated, same-day return service in the evening.
