FROM THE HEAD’S DESK
From the Head’s Desk Dear Park Tudor Community, With the holidays upon us, I tend to become nostalgic and, honestly, a little homesick. I revisit memories of my grandmother emerging from the kitchen with the pumpkin pie, reciting her yearly refrain that “the crust just didn’t turn out” – she never thought it did but it was always perfect and delicious. I chuckle to myself that for as long as I can remember, my father has miscalculated how long it will take to cook the turkey and that he seems to be the only one in the family who has yet to realize that. But as I think about entering my father’s house on Thanksgiving, joining my family in front of the fire, and laughing at the same old stories, the strongest feeling that comes over me is a sense of belonging. There is no one who knows us better than our families, and there is nowhere that we feel safer or better supported than when we are with them. Since my arrival this summer, nothing has struck me more than the consistent refrain – from students, parents, teachers, members of the staff, and alums – that Park Tudor is like a second family. Schools are at their best when all members of the community, but most importantly their students, feel that they truly belong. Indeed, there is no factor that better predicts student outcomes than the degree to which students feel seen, heard, supported, and safe – in other words, that they belong. But this sense of belonging does not emerge automatically; it requires ongoing, intentional work, and that is why when I began my tenure at Park Tudor, I made belonging the focus of my first year.

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2023
Throughout this busy fall semester, I have witnessed countless ways in which our school creates opportunities to join in and become part of the community. Some students find their place on the sports fields, while others revel in the opportunity to be part of a fine arts production. Still more find a niche as a member of Park Tudor’s many clubs – with most students opting to join multiple organizations. Many also participate in after-school classes that allow them to get to know fellow students with similar interests. In short, being a PT student typically means being very busy, striking a balance between academics and extracurriculars, and navigating among multiple peer groups. It’s been a joy to experience the school community on many levels. There have been many successes on the sports fields like our girls soccer team bringing home another State Championship, our football team finishing the regular season with an undefeated record, and our boys soccer team reaching the Semi-State game. In addition, earlier this semester our talented Upper School students performed their fall play, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon to three nearly sold-out audiences. In the Hilbert Center and Lower School, students and teachers showed off their creative costumes for the Halloween Parade, and a group of 20 Middle Schoolers traveled to Uruguay for our annual exchange with the Scuola Italiana de Montevideo – after welcoming students from Uruguay here to PT for 10 days.
FROM THE HEAD’S DESK
I’ve also enjoyed the many moments of connection that happen regularly. During Homecoming, it was heartwarming to see Lower Schoolers take the field at halftime as junior cheerleaders with their Upper School counterparts. Each month, Middle School “Panther Pals” visit the Lower School to work on projects with their younger peers. Each day, our Lower School students carry on the tradition of connecting with peers during “family-style” lunch. And now Upper School Debate Team members are starting to work with the newly formed Middle School Debate Team. These opportunities for students of all ages to connect, and so many more, make Park Tudor such a special place – truly a second home – and enable students to get the most out of their time here. As I reflect on my first months in this community, I can’t help but feel grateful to have joined a school community that I can call my second family. With gratitude,

Eighth Graders Visit JobSpark PT eighth graders visited the annual JobSpark event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This event is open to eighth-grade students in the Indianapolis area, and offers an opportunity to learn about careers in medicine, public service, technology, engineering, aviation, and much more. Students were able to enjoy hands-on activities and meet professionals currently working in a variety of fields. This will be an annual event for our eighth-grade students as we begin to plant seeds of interest before they enter high school.
Park Tudor Students Enjoy Inaugural HBCU Tour/Black Heritage Experience From September 25 to September 30, nine Park Tudor Upper School students and two chaperones traveled to North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. to visit several historically Black colleges and universities and other points of interest in African American history. Included in the itinerary were stops at North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Shaw University, Norfolk State, Hampton University, and Howard University, plus the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in D.C. The college tours were welcoming, informative, and engaging, and allowed our students to experience the uniqueness of life at an HBCU - an extra benefit especially as they consider their college applications. Also along the driving path were Bennett College, NC State, Duke, and the National Mall in D.C. This experience was a joint initiative of the Indianapolis Area Private School Diversity Consortium and included students from our area Consortium high schools, specifically University High School, Brebeuf, and Cathedral. The total group had 50 students and six chaperones. This was a fantastic, first trip of its kind for Park Tudor, with hopes of more to come.
PT Welcomes Students from Uruguay In September, we were pleased to once again welcome 22 students from the Scuola Italiana de Montevideo in Uruguay. The students spent 10 days in Indianapolis attending classes and visiting various sites around the city. In October, a group of PT Lower and Middle School students traveled to Uruguay to spend a week experiencing classes and life in that country.

His unique perspective blending theory and practice grants students a holistic understanding of film production. Park Tudor’s screening of his film All the Wrong Ingredients was the premier showing in Indianapolis.
The Upper School Debate Team was in action on Sunday, September 22 at the West Lafayette High School All-World Schools Tournament. Three PT teams competed against 23 World Schools teams from around Indiana in the event. The senior team of Jathan Pai, Daniel Laufer, Jack Townsend, Ibrahim Mohsin, and Nicholas Bullard went undefeated and took home first- place trophies. Seven additional sophomore and freshman debaters won their first rounds as members of the team. World Schools is an event where teams of three to five argue over two impromptu topics and both positions of a single prepared topic. The resolution at West Lafayette asked whether or not national service should be mandatory.
Upper School Partners with Heartland Film for Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series Heartland Film is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1991 with the mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Heartland Film curates and supports purposeful filmmaking, honoring a wide variety of cinema and awarding storytellers from all over the world. For the past eight years, Park Tudor has partnered with Heartland Film to host filmmakers in the annual Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series. Past filmmakers have included: Tim Taylor, Milan Chakraborty, Ted Green, and Annie O’Neil. On October 6, Upper School students attended a screening and artist talk with filmmaker Nicholas Livanos in Ayres Auditorium. With over fifteen years of experience, Nicholas Livanos is a visionary filmmaker whose works delve into the intricate tapestry of identity. Often absurd in comedy yet rooted in thematic depth, his films are not just narratives—they are intricate meta-narratives that challenge our perceptions and leave us contemplating our sense of self if we dare to examine past his disarming humor. Livanos serves on the School of Visual Art & Design faculty at Southern Adventist University. His impact extends far beyond

Playing at North Central and under intense pressure by a strong team, the JV girls were able to earn a 1-1 result behind the stellar goalkeeping of Natalie Whitacre and a timely goal by Lizzie Fisher. After the 1-5 start, the team finished the season 3-1-1 to finish with a final record of 4-6-1.

to bring home the Sectional title - the team’s first Sectional Championship since 2018. In the Regional, the Panthers defeated Fountain Central 5-0 in the first round, but lost in the Regional Finals to #1-ranked Carmel High School, 3-2 in a hardfought match. Aarit Musilanngari won at the #1 Singles position and advanced the Regional Finals of the IHSAA State Individual Tournament. To provide additional play, the JV team participated in Carmel Invite, Brebeuf JV Doubles Event and the HSE Royals JV Invitational.
The team began the 2023 season with the intent to share their love of football with the PT community with the motto “we do what we love, and we love what we do.” An undefeated regular season, 9-0, is a direct product of that passion. Senior leadership has been invaluable to the team’s success. Over the 9 regular-season games, DJ Gordon passed for 1834 yards, at a 70% completion rate, and 21 touchdowns. He also added 1176 yards rushing and 23 TD’s on the ground. Defensively the Panthers suffocated their opponents at just over 10 points per game. Will Harris averaged 13 tackles per game. Nolan Whitehead reset the single-season sack record with 11. The Panthers won the Sectional Championship with wins over Clinton Central and North Vermillion. The season came to an end with a 26-44 loss to North Judson in the Regional.

Despite the initial uncertainties, this group of determined athletes proved their true potential and exceeded expectations.
The boys tennis team had a great season on and off the court, with 37 boys at all levels of play joining the team. PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2023
One of the most significant highlights of the season was the team’s substantial improvement in their communication and teamwork abilities. They transformed from being a group of individuals to a united team, seamlessly executing plays and exhibiting exceptional support on the court. This collective effort not only resulted in impressive victories but also highlighted the team’s maturity and capacity to work together under pressure. At the end of the season, the team members

felt a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. Looking back, they realized that the season had taught them invaluable life lessons beyond the scope of volleyball. It demonstrated to the girls the significance of resilience, unity, and the rewards of persevering through difficult times. These experiences will undoubtedly shape them into determined and resilient individuals, both on and off the court, as they move forward.
Cross Country The boys and girls cross country teams saw many improvements and successes during the 2023 season. The season was highlighted by the Panthers bringing home the PAAC Championship titles for both the boys and girls teams, while Lauren Lo and Spencer Hughes also won PAAC individual Championship titles. There were more than 50 personal record times set over the course of the season. The team also advanced 10 runners to the Regional Finals of the State tournament, with the girls team securing a fifth-place finish in a very competitive Sectional meet. The teams also enjoyed practice runs to BRICS for ice cream and pre-race pasta dinners together. Everyone is looking forward to continued success in 2024!
Boys Soccer The varsity boys soccer team finished the season with a 12-70 record. Although the team fell short of a second appearance in the State Finals, they captured their third Regional Championship in four years and fourth in school history. The team advanced to the IHSAA Class 1A Semi-State Finals, but unfortunately lost to the eventual 1A State Champion, Bethany Christian in a penalty shootout. After graduating 7 starters from 2022, the team reloaded with a younger team and was able to grow and develop together to make another post-season run. The leadership of 4-year starter Teddy Kramer ensured that Park Tudor remained a competitive team in the state. The team will compete in 2A in 2024 with eight returning starters. The JV team finished the season with a 5-4-3 record. This was the largest JV team in school history, with 26 student-athletes. The development of the players from freshmen to seniors was noticeable. With a challenging schedule, the team was still able to compete against several 2A and 3A teams. The JV team made it to the Championship game against Lebanon, but unfortunately lost in penalty kicks.
Girls Golf The girls golf season got underway with the Lapel Bulldog Classic on Saturday, August 12; the team finished 11th out of 17 teams with a 398. The team also played in the Trojan Classic on August 19, hosted by Center Grove at Hickory Stick Golf Club. In the Marion County Girls Golf Tournament on Tuesday, September 5 at Southern Dunes Golf Club, the team placed 7th out of 15 teams. Anastasia Ebersole finished 6th overall and was named to the All-Marion County Team. In the IHSAA Sectional on Monday, September 18 at Maple Creek Golf Course, the team finished one place shy of advancing - 4th overall out of 10 teams with a 421. Anastasia Ebersole finished as one of the top three individuals from a non-advancing team, so she advanced to the IHSAA Regional held on Saturday, September 23 at The Edgewood Golf Course in Anderson. Annual Report
ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends of Park Tudor, The following Annual Report recognizes gifts made from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 by hundreds of donors to Park Tudor, including current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff. These generous gifts support Park Tudor’s mission to provide an exceptional education and extraordinary experiences to all our students. In addition to recognizing the generosity of our community on the following pages, I’d like to share a few of the extraordinary experiences that the community enjoyed this year. The Development team worked with Booster Club to host four Spirit Nights prior to home football games; one very special evening was a partnership with the Fine Arts Department and allowed the theater students and guests attending the fall play to enjoy dinner after the performance before heading to the game. School leadership works closely to devise creative solutions like this to ensure that students who participate in both the arts and athletics don’t have to choose when there is a conflict in timing. In January we worked with Booster Club to host the sixth annual Trivia Night. We also worked with the Fine Arts Department to host “Musical Theater Night” where the faculty and students took guests “behind the scenes” of the Middle School and Upper School spring musicals. This engaging evening gave parents and guests a chance to see the creative process that goes into these incredible productions – both on stage and in the wings. Together these events raised more than $40,000 for fine arts programs and athletics. In 2022-23, we were thrilled to return to a full schedule of alumni events. In November, we welcomed alumni to campus for a varsity basketball game. We also visited graduates studying at DePauw, Indiana, and Purdue Universities. In April, more than 400 alumni returned to campus for Reunion Weekend events including the Distinguished Alumni Dinner, a luncheon for alumni celebrating 50 years or more since graduating, and allclass reception. The fall of 2022 marked the return of Grandparents and Special Friends Day. We missed this beloved tradition and were thrilled that more than 500 guests joined us to visit their students in their classrooms.

Finally, I’d like to share a reflection on a significant loss to the Park Tudor and Indianapolis communities. Marianne Williams Tobias ’58 passed away on July 12, 2023. Marianne had many talents and passions; she was a dear friend to her classmates and loyal to her alma mater. Last January we were thrilled to welcome her as a speaker as part of the Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series where she shared her research on the effect music has on patients recovering from traumatic brain injury. A gifted pianist and music theorist, she graced us with many beautiful performances over the years – most recently at the opening of the newly remodeled lobby in the Frederic M. Ayres, Jr. Auditorium which the school named in her honor in gratitude for Marianne’s generosity throughout the years. Marianne truly embodied the Park Tudor values and mission as a lifelong learner, and it is fitting that her name will grace a space in which the arts will thrive for generations to come.
MEMORIAL AND HONORARIUM GIFTS Your gift may be made in memory or in honor of a colleague, student, teacher, classmate or family member who is special to you. Please include this information in the appropriate area on the gift/pledge envelope or the notes section of the online donation form. On behalf of the entire school community, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous financial contributions and for everything you do to make Park Tudor such a special place for all our students.
Park Tudor greatly appreciates every gift to the school and proudly acknowledges each donor in the Annual Report. If you wish your gift to be anonymous, please indicate so in the appropriate area on the gift/pledge envelope or online donation form.
With gratitude, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87 Director of Development

Upper School REV Teams Compete at Purdue The Science Department’s REV (racing electric vehicle) teams recently raced in the Purdue University Fall Classic Grand Prix. Seventeen karts from numerous Indiana high schools participated in the October competition. Senior and veteran participant Malcolm Hembre served as team principal overseeing the operations at the track. Sophomore and first-ever female driver Quincy Katz piloted her kart to an 11th-place finish and missed a top-three sprint qualifying race finish by 0.2 sec. Jackson Cooreman-Hood was her crew chief, and William Davison served as crew for the kart. Freshman driver Andrew Webster finished 4th in the sprint qualifying race and was unfortunately collected in a mid-race incident that rendered the kart inoperable after completing a flawless first half of the race. First-ever female crew chief Avery Williams was supported in the pits by veterans Vaughn Beesley and Cole Reed and freshman Jacob Cairns. We are deeply appreciative of Ryan and Kim Beesley’s logistical and transportation assistance, mechanical expertise, and photography for this event. Teams will return to Purdue in April 2024 for the Spring EV World Grand Prix competition. The REV teams are led by Dr. Scott McDougall, Upper School Science Teacher and Science Department Chair.

Alumni Feature: Jen Bohler Johansen ’91 Takes Center Stage By Cathy Yingling Chapelle ’87
Theater fans in Indianapolis will be familiar with Jen Bohler Johansen’s work with Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT), American Lives Theatre and Indy Shakes, among others. A Park Tudor alumna from the class of 1991, Jen has been a fixture on Indianapolis stages for more than 20 years. I recently caught up with Jen to discuss her successful career and hear about upcoming projects. 26

How did you decide you wanted to pursue an acting career? I caught the bug at Park Tudor. I wasn’t a strong student, but I did feel that I had an aptitude for performing. Being involved in theater, first with Miss Ulen and then with Mr. Grayson, and studying piano with Miss Brock and vocal music with John Williams in junior high and high school gave me confidence and helped me realize my strengths.
That said, as I’ve heard other actors tell their Broadway stories, I’ve realized that I won’t experience that. I won’t win a Tony, I won’t be on a Broadway stage. That’s not heartbreaking, it’s just a realization.
At that age, I didn’t think that acting could be a real career. I eventually ended up going to Hanover College, and while I was there I started to really think “I want to do this.” I was afraid to tell my mom that I wanted to pursue a career in theater, which is funny because her immediate response was that she always knew I was either going to be an actor or out on the street leading demonstrations or something. I was fortunate at Hanover to work with a very influential professor/director who advised me, “If you can do anything else, do it. If not - I think you can do this.” After college I joined the Actors Theater of Louisville and was involved in the 20th anniversary year of the Humana Festival (of New American Plays) which was a big deal at the time, and then left with about half of my cohort of actors to move to New York. I stayed in New York for about 2-½ years and did lots of cattle calls and auditions where no one even looked up at me and finally realized that New York just wasn’t my city. I came back to Indianapolis to figure out what was next and ended up auditioning for a play at the Phoenix Theatre. I was cast and ended up meeting my husband at that audition, and then started working in IRT productions and eventually became a professional actor and joined the union in 2003 - 20 years ago.
I think regional theater is really the backbone of theater. It provides a way of getting stories that you want people to know out into the community. There’s also a greater level of connection to the community that regional theater provides. For example, here in Indianapolis I’m on the boards of two local theater companies and I’m going to have the opportunity to direct for the first time soon - those are opportunities I probably wouldn’t have in New York or even Chicago. You mentioned that you were bitten by the acting bug at Park Tudor; how else did your PT experience prepare you for your career? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of being a professional actor in Indianapolis vs. a larger market like New York? The obvious advantage is you’re not paying as much to live. While there may not be as many living wage paying theaters in Indy, there are other ways to supplement income between shows that are still connected to art and creativity. Forging community relationships can lead to unforeseen opportunities to teach or to stilt walk, which both my husband and I do. I’ve also been able to work in other regional markets using Indy as my base - Cincinnati, Dayton, Chicago, and Ithaca, New York for example. I’ve been able to build a lot of different relationships in other markets working out of Indianapolis.
One of the greatest aspects of Park Tudor is that you are able to participate in so many different things - you aren’t forced to go down one path with sports or the arts. For example, I never would have played basketball at North Central, but I’m so grateful to have been part of a team and so grateful to get to try things. Were there any teachers that were particularly influential? There were many - I’m sure I’ll leave someone out, but definitely Liz Ulen, Jerry Grayson, Rob Hueni, Melanie Marshall…also Lisa Trimpe - she was a great coach and mentor and Debbie Everett, who is a dear friend. ALUMNI FEATURE What are your favorite roles you have played? I’ve been fortunate to do so many different kinds of work. My first one-woman show with IRT, The Syringa Tree, was certainly a favorite. The show is about apartheid and is set in South Africa, and I played 14 different characters - men, women, Black, White, young and old - it was incredibly empowering and also terrifying as I missed the camaraderie of a cast. I also really enjoyed acting in The Game’s Afoot at IRT; that was a fun farce with a great cast, costumes, and set. In addition, Wild Horses at the Phoenix Theatre; that was another one-woman show, but I alternated with another actress, Constance Macy. I loved having that shared experience and the opportunity to rehearse with her. I also have loved performing in Shakespeare’s plays and of course A Christmas Carol at the IRT. Are there any “dream roles” that you would like to play? When I was younger I had a list of roles I wanted to play, like Hedda Gabler and several others, but honestly I’ve timed out of a lot of those. It feels great being a “woman of a certain age” as more interesting roles are being written for people at my stage of life. I think that there are probably a lot of roles that I’d really like to play that I don’t even know about yet. That said, I’d still love to do some of the iconic Shakespeare roles I haven’t yet taken on.
Do you have any advice for PT students who aspire to be a professional actor? Stay curious, and live your life. Typically plays aren’t telling stories about the theater, they’re telling stories about people living full lives; the more experiences you have, the better equipped you will be to tell those stories. You also have to recognize that it is hard - you’ll often hear a lot more “no’s” than “yes’s.” I have learned to cope with not getting a role by implementing a “36-hour rule.” I will allow myself 36 hours to have my pity party and tell myself it’s not fair, and then I force myself to get over it. I’ve realized that there’s a reason I’m not doing a particular project, and that someone else needed that opportunity more. You’ve got to honor the pain and the sting of rejection - and then let it go. What’s next for you? I’m in rehearsals for A Christmas Carol, and then I’m very excited about my first directing project - an American Lives Theatre production at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. Jen Johansen will be performing the roles of Mrs. Fezziwig and Mrs. Cratchit in the IRT’s production of “A Christmas Carol” from November 18–December 24. More information and tickets are available on irtlive.com. For more information about American Lives Theatre, visit americanlivestheatre.org.
