Dear Park Tudor

Community,

From the Head’s Desk

One of the most troubling developments during my career has been the significant increase in mental health struggles among young people. We know that mental health disorders have been on the rise in people of all ages, but adolescents and teens have been particularly impacted; in fact, recent surveys have shown that nearly 80% of college students seek mental health support. I’m grateful to Kalen Irsay Jackson ’06 and the entire Irsay family for their Kicking The Stigma program that works to reduce the stigma associated with mental health disorders and provides support and resources for those struggling with mental illness. You can learn more about these important efforts in the alumni profile featured in this issue.

At Park Tudor, we have made mental health a focus for our students. The goal is not to remove all stressors and sources of anxiety, but to graduate students who are equipped to effectively manage the stress and anxiety they are sure to encounter in years to come. Certainly life beyond college will require our graduates to be adaptable and resilient, so it is no longer enough simply to produce the most academically prepared students.

We know that students who have meaningful personal connections – who feel that they matter to others – are more resilient and better able to navigate challenging situations. Fortunately, Park Tudor has always been a place where students develop close connections with their teachers and peers.

Beyond that, we have begun to implement specific policies and programs to support student wellness and mental health:

• We have changed our cell phone policies so that students not only have a distraction-free learning environment, but also come to understand how important it is to reduce distractions once they leave PT.

• We have started the process of developing a clearly articulated health and wellness curriculum that extends from PK-grade 12 in which students develop the habits, skills and mindsets necessary to effectively navigate the twists and turns of life. As Kalen points out in the alumni profile article, different mental health strategies work for different people; one of our goals is to arm students with a variety of health and wellness tools so they can determine what will be effective for them.

• We have hosted a variety of speakers and webinars for students, parents, and faculty focused on mental health topics. Most notably, parents and faculty have had the opportunity to hear from best-selling authors Jennifer Wallace, who spoke about “Raising Healthy Achievers in a Hyper-Competitive World,” and Dr. Lisa Damour, who wrote The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents. We will continue to host speakers to help educate our community as we all work to support students’ mental health.

I am extremely excited about embarking on this process and building upon our already exceptional educational experience, so that we can best prepare students for the future that awaits them.

With gratitude,

A. First-grade students ushered in the fall by visiting Tuttle Orchard for pumpkin picking and tractor rides in October.

B. Students in Mrs. Cosman's History class hosted their inaugural Roman toga party. Studying Rome in sixth grade has been a tradition for years, and this event was a successful addition to the unit for future classes!

C. Lower and Middle School students met with their Panther Pals throughout the semester to build relationships across divisions.

D. Face painting, inflatable games, food, and fun — the Park Tudor Parents Association Fall Family Festival was back for another great year!

E. PT welcomed the IU Soul Revue for two performances. Students were treated to a rousing mix of R&B, soul, funk, and contemporary Black popular music performed by America's first and finest collegiate Black popular music ensemble.

Park Tudor Rev Race Team Competes at Purdue University EV Grand Prix

October 3rd was the start of a new era in racing for the Park Tudor Rev race team. Since the team’s inception, all Purdue University EV Grand Prix competitions were powered by four 48v lead-acid batteries. Under Purdue’s Engineering Department leadership and extensive research and testing, the Purdue EV Karting Series switched to lithium-ironphosphate power. Special thanks to Purdue’s Engineering Department, Allison Transmission, and UAW for making the transition possible.

The race results were historic for the young program. The sophomore driver of the #22 kart, Jacob Cairns, finished third out of seven karts in his qualifying race and placed third out of 20 drivers in the championship. Jacob’s result is the team’s first-ever podium in only six races for the program. Jacob improved nine positions in the 6.75-mile race. Crew chief Andrew Webster and crew Avery Williams, Leeann VanOrshoven, Malcolm Hembre, and Elizabeth Sturgill supported Jacob’s efforts.

Kart #20 was piloted by sophomore Quincy Katz. Katz improved six spots and finished 12th (two top-15 finishes in two career races). Quincy posted the field’s fastest race lap and best-ever lap for the program by clocking a 39.2 mph lap. Senior and veteran crew chief Jack Cooreman-Hood led the #20 crew consisting of Soren Hembre, Cole Reed, and William Davison. Senior Vaughn Beesley served as team principal and oversaw both kart preparations, thus ensuring passing pre- and post-tech inspections and that all kart modifications were to series specifications.

Boys Soccer

Coming off a third consecutive Semi State appearance, the 14th-ranked Park Tudor boys entered into the 2024 season in uncharted waters - their maiden season in IHSAA Class 2A. The Panthers managed to go 5-0 in PAAC conference action, allowing just three goals and tallying 18 on the other end to bring home the Conference Championship for the first time in four seasons. Additionally, a bolstered schedule left the Panthers sitting at 12-3-1 heading into Sectionals, with losses coming against 3A schools Kokomo and Ben Davis, as well as Guerin Catholic, a team they would face again in the first round of Sectionals.

Park Tudor began Sectionals ranked sixth. Tested with two of the strongest teams in back-to-back nights, the Panthers triumphed 3-1 in both contests over Guerin Catholic and TriWest Hendricks, setting the stage to welcome Heritage Christian for a Sectional Championship. The Panthers were down 1-0, but a strong second half saw Park Tudor win 2-1 to move on to a Regional clash with Jay County.

A 4-1 win at home over Jay County sent the Panthers to Fort Wayne for the Regional Championship against West Lafayette. After 94 minutes of action, penalty kicks decided the outcome of this tie. Senior Daniel Peyton stepped up to make the game winner to post the win 1-1 (8-7) after kicks.

In their fourth-consecutive final four appearance, and the team’s first in 2A, the Panthers faced 9th-ranked Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran for a chance to punch their ticket to the State Championship. Unfortunately the Panthers fell 2-0 but finished their season with high expectations for next year as they look to make another run at a 2A State Title.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team had its most challenging schedule ever, with eight matches vs. ranked opponents. The schedule was put together to prepare the team for the postseason, as they moved up to Class 2A, based on success factors.

The Panthers ended the season with an 11-5-2 record, highlighted by the team's first-ever Marion County Championship with a 2-0 victory over Roncalli in the final. Unfortunately, the team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brebeuf in the first round of Sectionals to end the season.

The team benefited from great senior leadership from Paige Dill, Neela Gussick, Molly McDonald, and Mary Jane Furqueron. Paige had 6 goals and 7 assists on the year. She was selected All-Conference PAAC, First Team All-County, and Second Team All-District. Neela had 7 goals and 9 assists on the year. She was selected All-Conference PAAC, First Team All-County, and Academic All-State. Molly had 6 goals and 4 assists on the year. She was selected All-Conference PAAC, First Team All-County, Top Team Player, and Academic All-State. Mary Jane had 5 goals and 3 assists on the year. She was selected Academic All-State

and was the 2024 Fall Crown Award winner for Park Tudor.

This was a special year again for PT girls soccer and the future is very bright with a talented team returning in 2025 including: Anna Mattes (11 shutouts), Lizzy Miller (2 goals, 4 assists, AllConference PAAC, All-County, Academic All-State), Mia Rettig (6 goals, 3 assists, Academic All-State), Willa Hains, Claire Pasquesi (5 goals, 9 assists), Sydney Shattuck (24 goals, 6 assists All-Conference PAAC, 1st Team All-District, All-County), Asha Gussick (8 goals, 5 assists), Joslin Kershaw (8 goals, 7 assists), Issy Wallace (2 goals, 2 assists, Academic All-State), Eva Berger, Elizabeth Pasquesi (Academic All- State), and Kylie Ritz (1 goal, 1 assist).

Football

Despite having lost a lot of experience due to seniors graduating, the football team was able to come together and create big moments on the field. The Panthers finished the season with a final record of 6-4, marking five consecutive years at or above .500 for the Panthers.

Defensively, the Panthers were anchored by All-Conference players at both defensive line and linebacker: Thomas Lillo, Eli Bennett and Nathan Harris. Nathan Harris tallied 104 tackles in his 10-week, senior campaign. On the offensive side, freshman quarterback Christopher Harris was surrounded by weapons: Eland Edwards ran for over 700 yards, and Landon Guerra and MJ Gaines both added 600 yards receiving.

They started the season strong, winning their first three games vs. Greenwood Christian Academy (44-27), Tindley (21-0) and Shortridge High School (28-20). They posted their first loss of the season at home against the Fremont Eagles, 47-29, followed by a 46-26 loss on the road at Shenandoah. The team bounced back with a decisive 39-20 win over Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian at home, but then suffered a tough 72-45 loss to the Wes-Del Warriors. They finished the regular season strong with two big wins at home; they defeated South Newton 58-26 and Edinburgh 63-0.

In the first round of IHSAA Sectional play on October 25, the team hosted the Raiders from Cardinal Ritter High School and posted a 34-18 loss. Overall, the Panthers' 6-4 record is a reflection of a lot of hard work and growth this year. With

so many returning players, the coaching staff is optimistic that 2024 will be a stepping stone for continued success in the future.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team had a rebuilding year in 2024. Thirty-six boys with all levels of play came out for the team. The varsity team finished the season with 7 wins and 8 losses, and the JV team finished with 3 wins and 6 losses.

At the North Central Invitational, the Panthers tied for 4th place; following are the results at each position:

1.Singles: Aarit Musilannagari - 4th place

2.Singles: Charlie Held - 5th place

3.Singles: Evan Yu - 7th place

1.Doubles: Aden Hawkins/Benjamin Murray - 3rd place

2.Doubles: Eli Fisch/Oliver Gollapudi - 5th Place

The team went on to capture the Pioneer Athletic Association Conference (PAAC) Championship. The following players were named All-Conference: Oliver Gollapudi, Aden Hawkins, Charlie Held, Benjamin Murray, and Aarit Musilannagari.

In the Marion County Tournament, the Panthers lost in the quarterfinals. They defeated Lawrence Central 5-0 before losing to Brebeuf 5-0.

The IHSAA State Team Tournament journey began with Park Tudor hosting the Sectional Tournament. The Panthers defeated International School 4-1 in the first round before losing in the finals 5-0 to Brebeuf, who went on to win the IHSAA State Team Championship.

The team was also recognized for academic achievements. The varsity team was named Academic All-State for having a 3.6 GPA or higher. Charlie Held was named Academic All-State Individual for a senior player that has a minimum 3.8 GPA and a 1280 SAT or 27 ACT score. The following players were named PAAC Academic Achievement for a junior or senior with a 3.75 GPA or higher: Cal Bostic, Jack Cooreman-Hood, Evan Francis, Sahan Gangireddy, Charlie Held, Aashiv Jain, Aarit Musilannagari, Rishi Nagireddy, Ishan Patel, Isaac Rothbaum, Andyson Shao, and Evan Yu.

Mental Attitude: Oliver Gollapudi

MVP: Aarit Musilannagari

Leadership Awards: Jack Cooreman-Hood, Charlie Held, and Aarit Musilannagari

Cross Country

The cross country team enjoyed many successes over the course of the season. The girls team repeated as PAAC Conference Meet champions with all five scorers being named All-Conference, and the boys team took second place in the meet. Seven runners - Quinn Rogers, Sean Choi, Avi Holden, Kylie Ritz, Lauren Lo, Bryn Gillen, and Hasini Ambaty - advanced individually past the Sectional Championship to the Regional finals, and five of these runners set new personal best times in the race. The team had excellent senior leadership and camaraderie over the many weeks and months of training, and the team participated in several bonding and volunteer activities along with their running. Every member of the team improved their personal best time for the 5K distance, and many athletes improved this time on multiple occasions. The team is looking forward to another great season in 2025.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team continued to embrace a rebuilding journey in 2024, finishing with an 11-11 overall record and a strong 3-1 finish in PAAC conference play. This season marked a period of transformation, as many players stepped into new roles, filling the shoes of graduates and welcoming fresh talent. It was a true test of the team’s resilience.

Throughout the season, the players grew into a cohesive unit ready to face any challenge. The Panthers’ teamwork and

connection on the court fueled some thrilling wins, with each player making meaningful contributions. By supporting one another and working together, the team became greater than the sum of their parts.

D’Aaliyah Kemp and Samantha McGuinness stood out with their exceptional performances, earning spots on the second team All-PAAC. Their dedication and skill made a lasting impact, and the team is excited to have them both back next season. With the strong foundation laid by the 2025 seniors, this team has an exciting future ahead.

Girls Golf

The girls golf team’s season was highlighted by a win in the PAAC Conference Tournament on September 12 at Woodwind Golf Course. Congratulations to Annamarie Ebersole, Anjali Pai, and Ingrid Spartz, who earned All-Conference honors.

In the Marion County Tournament on September 10 at Smock Golf Course, the Panthers finished 6th out of 16 teams. The team competed in the IHSAA Sectional on September 23 at Maple Creek Golf Course, finishing 5th out of 10 teams. While the team did not advance, junior Annamaria Ebersole placed in the top three as an individual and advanced to the IHSAA Regional.

The team competed in matches against Perry Meridian High School on August 22 at Woodwind Golf Course, and played in the Trojan Classic on August 24 at Hickory Stick Golf Course. On September 5, they hosted the Trailblazers from University High School at Woodwind Golf Course. Congratulations to the team on a successful season!

Dear Friends of Park Tudor,

The following Annual Report recognizes gifts made from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024 by more than 800 donors to Park Tudor. These generous gifts support Park Tudor’s mission to provide an exceptional education and extraordinary experiences for all our students. In addition to recognizing the generosity of our community on the following pages, I’d like to highlight a few extraordinary events and programs from the past year.

With a focus on building community and bringing together current families, faculty and students from across nearly 50 zip codes, we began the tradition of hosting occasional Friday night tailgates prior to home football games. The magic of coming together to celebrate a week and share a meal before watching Lower School students high five football players as they run out onto the field has created both new rituals and wonderful memories. If you have yet to join us, please plan on it next fall.

The Development office continues to partner with the Booster Club and the Fine Arts Department to provide annual fundraising events that bring together parents, alumni, and faculty for camaraderie. In January 2024, we hosted the seventh annual Trivia Night. The evening was a smashing success with a sold-out crowd dressed in theme and trying their best to top the trivia chart. In March 2024, we celebrated the Upper School spring musical and the Fine Arts Department with an After Party following the Friday night performance of Mean Girls. Together these two events raised more than $50,000 for athletics and fine arts programming.

In an effort to connect with our young alumni, we continued our college visits in the 2023-24 school year. In the fall, we visited with students at Indiana University and Purdue University. In the spring, we headed to Notre Dame as well as DePauw University. Locally, the Park Tudor Alumni Board of Directors continues to host events like the annual alumni family pumpkin carving and the spring basketball watch party at Binkley’s.

And, of course, there are our signature events that occur as part of Alumni Weekend. This past year we celebrated alumni with class years ending in “4” or “9.” It was a joy to watch the class of 1974 toast their 50th reunion and share stories of their high school days. Additionally, the opportunity to celebrate two of Park Tudor’s Distinguished Alumni, Janis Smith-Gomez ’85 and Drew Elliott ’99, provided all of us with a renewed commitment to our mission, vision, and values.

In closing, I’d like to say thank you. Each year, your support combines with gifts from alumni, faculty, parents, grandparents, and friends to round out our operating budget which covers critical programming and staffing for all our learners and teachers. Ultimately, the more people we have supporting the school, the stronger we all are.

On behalf of the entire school community, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous financial contributions and for everything you do to make Park Tudor such a special place for all our students.

With gratitude,

Kalen Irsay Jackson ’06 is Kicking The Stigma of Mental Health Disorders

In her role as a vice-chair and owner of the Indianapolis Colts, Kalen Irsay Jackson ’06 is spearheading the initiative, Kicking The Stigma, which is raising awareness about mental health disorders and reducing the stigma often associated with these illnesses through the inspiring power of sports. In addition to raising awareness, Kicking The Stigma is raising and distributing funding to nonprofits and other organizations that make a direct impact in the mental health sector. Since launching in 2020, Kicking The Stigma has committed more than $31 million to mental health awareness, organizations and research; so far, more than $6.4 million in grants has been distributed to mental health nonprofits.

The problem is staggering. Currently, more than 615 million people across the globe are living with a mental health condition, including over a million Hoosiers who have been diagnosed - with even more experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, 60% of people don’t get the mental health services they need.

I recently caught up with Kalen to learn more about Kicking The Stigma and why the Irsay family is so committed to this important cause.

Why did you and your family decide you wanted to focus your attention on mental health?

I had been overseeing our community impact and giving strategy for several years. Our family has always been honored to show up for our community, but we hadn’t really had a philanthropic area of focus. My sister Carlie (Irsay-Gordon ’99) challenged me by asking if we were to focus on one thing, what would it be? That got me thinking, and I landed on mental health because we have so much lived experience in that area. Certainly, my father’s struggle with substance use disorder has been a story that others have told; I began to think about what it might be like if we told our own story and started an open dialogue about our own mental health challenges. Once we decided to move forward, we looked at the statistics for the state of Indiana and it was so awful in terms of numbers of Hoosiers who struggle with mental health and the lack of resources available, we knew this was an important area of focus where we could have a real impact.

mental health, it really has an impact on the fans. Certainly, there’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’ve had parents come to us and tell us that their child has struggled for so long and even in some cases talked about suicidal ideation, and seeing our PSA pulled them back from the brink.

We initially planned to launch Kicking The Stigma in spring of 2020, and then of course the pandemic hit. The numbers related to mental health disorders were staggering before COVID, but the pandemic really brought a lot of these issues to the forefront; I think a silver lining of the pandemic was that it encouraged a huge wave of conversation about mental health. While we couldn’t do the big launch event that we had planned, we wanted to start addressing anxiety, depression, suicide, and substance use disorder. We agreed to an initial donation of three $1 million gifts, and to make mental health the cause we selected for our families’ shoes for the My Cause My Cleats program (this NFL program allows players to showcase their commitment to various causes through custom-painted cleats).

We realized early on that we had really struck a chord with people, perhaps because we had football players - these paragons of strength - willing to be vulnerable and have an open discussion about issues that can be very stigmatizing. We started hearing from people - they were writing letters and calling the Colts office looking for resources. It was almost as though people were waiting for permission to talk about these issues. We realized that everyone has a tie to mental health disorders in some way and they impact so many areas of our lives and people within the community. We finally settled on a desire to focus on grassroots efforts, encouraging donations to worthy organizations, and building connections.

What has been the impact of Kicking The Stigma so far?

We’ve heard so many stories about people - and especially young people - who have been encouraged to come forward and admit their mental health struggles after seeing these athletes they look up to talk about their struggles. When they see these Colts players, who embody strength and masculinity, talk about

We’re also encouraged by the other families and organizations who have come alongside us in this effort. From the beginning, we’ve been focused on trying to connect with the right people and organizations and be very strategic about where we focus our dollars - who is doing the best work in this area? For example, through the Irsay Institute at Indiana University we’ve been working with Dr. Bernice Pescosolido, who is one of the country’s leading researchers in stigma and how to combat it. We’ve also done a lot of work at the state level; Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch formed a mental health roundtable and along with Governor Holcomb has increased the effort the state is putting towards mental health. Historically, Indiana has ranked close to the bottom of all the states in terms of mental health; as of 2022, we’ve improved to number 24. I think that Kicking The Stigma has contributed to that.

This program has also had a huge impact on our family and me personally. The people who have shared their stories with me have helped me, as well. This is truly life-purpose work and being able to help improve lives and leave the world a better place means the world to us.

Park Tudor has put a big focus on student wellness, including mental health, for several years. Your family was instrumental in helping us to build the beautiful Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness, which opened in 2021. Why was it important to your family to support this facility with such a significant gift?

Certainly, physical health affects mental health. My whole family has used exercise as a part of our mental health strategy. For me personally coping with anxiety, I’m not on daily medication but exercise benefits me in a way like taking a pill would. Sports in general help to enhance mental health, along with life skills and confidence. We also liked that the Irsay Family Sports Center offers space for community and other forms of wellness, which is really important to us. We feel so tied to Park Tudor; my sisters and I are alums, and now our children are attending the school, so it was exciting to us that the school is making wellness a priority.

What advice do you have for young people who might be struggling with their mental health?

I would encourage young people to start by having an honest conversation with themselves and with others close to them about whatever struggles they might be having. There are so many resources available - visit kickingthestigma.org for a list of trusted local and national organizations and helplines. There really should be no shame; the stigma piece is still unfortunately so prevalent. But if you had a broken arm, you wouldn’t wait seven to 10 years to get help - which is the average time it takes people to seek help for mental illness. I also think it’s important to build your own mental health toolkit to help you every day. It could be journaling, exercise, meditation, medication - different strategies work for different people. For young people who have overcome mental health challenges, if you feel comfortable I would encourage you to tell your story because that can really help others.

How did your experience as a student at Park Tudor help to prepare you for what you’re doing now?

In every way, Park Tudor instilled good habits that helped prepare me for college at I.U. I saw some of my peers struggle with the curriculum in college and I was so thankful for how well prepared I was.

From a mental health perspective, I remember Mrs. Paul, who was my teacher in fifth grade when my anxiety hit a high peak,

really helped me get through it. I had terrible anxiety and I would cry hysterically in the morning. The school gave us a room where my mom could sit with me while I calmed down; Mrs. Paul was so understanding. It ended up working out fine, but I’m not sure how it would have gone without the support of Mrs. Paul and the school. Later on, I had a lot of anxiety with timed testing; again, the school helped me with time and space to learn the way I needed to. Now, I feel so blessed to be able to give my children the same Park Tudor education I received.

The Legacy Initiative Turns its Focus to a WWII-Era Love Story

The Legacy Initiative celebrated its 25th year in 2023-2024 with the publication of Alma De Luce: Your European Correspondent 1939-1941. This fulfilled our project’s mission to save wartime accounts and it proved to be very popular with our students. Moving forward, the Legacy Initiative will focus on short-term projects, like articles published in The Phoenix and on the Legacy Initiative website (parktudor.org/legacy), which will enable more students to work with a wider variety of primary sources (and in some cases self-designed projects).

Students continue to express great enthusiasm for working with wartime collections of letters, photographs and other related documents. In August students opened a box with Frank Pietila’s WWII letters, and once they started reading them, there was no putting them away! The Pietila story follows below.

What comes next for the Legacy Initiative? From 2001-2015, students interviewed and recorded over 700 interviews for the Library of Congress Veteran History Project. The WWII veterans – most of whom are now gone – were our priority and some of their best stories have been included in our anthologies. Now the Legacy Initiative will focus on the veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan and Bosnia. A couple hundred of their oral history transcripts have been digitized and uploaded to the digital cloud for students to review and

research. Our students are also available to help digitize wartime letters, diaries, and other related wartime documents. We look forward to featuring some of the best stories in future Phoenix articles as we continue to sustain our project’s mission to save wartime histories.

WWII Letters from Frank Nestor Pietila to Dorothy Verna

Frank Nestor Pietila was born in San Diego, California on August 7, 1924, to John and Eva Pietila. John was a Finnish immigrant and worked for the Public Works Administration as a carpenter. Eva was his second wife, and they had three sons together: Paul, Frank, and Walter. The Pietila family also lived with John’s two children from his previous marriage, Willy and Tyyne, as well as John’s brother, August.

A little over 130 miles from San Diego, Dorothy Ann Verna grew up in Pasadena. She was born on June 4, 1927, the third of five children born to Giovanni “John” Verna, an Italian immigrant, and Marie Naccarato from Idaho. Dorothy is assumed to have lived a fairly modest life, as John’s work selling fruit was the only job held by any member of the Verna family. In spite

of this, Dorothy became well-educated, graduating from Washington Junior High in 1943 and attending Pasadena Junior College in 1945.

It is unclear how Dorothy and Frank met, as they lived quite a distance away from each other. However, it seems they were well-acquainted by October 20, 1943. The Legacy Initiative’s earliest item in the Pietila collection was written on that date, while Frank had already been in the US Navy for six months. Frank penned the letter to “my darling Dot,” revealing that the two must have known each other, and were romantically involved before Frank joined the Navy and wrote home in October of 1943.

The letters that Frank sent to Dorothy never shied away from affection. Almost every letter in the collection is signed off with “I love you,” or with a mention of his dedication to Dorothy. They would send letters to each other multiple times a week, helping them to stay in touch through Frank’s military training and service in the Pacific. Of their correspondence, Frank wrote on December 10, 1943, “Honey, when I got back from town today, I looked in the mail, and there was a letter from you, your letters mean everything to me and I love you so much that I can’t put it into words." A variety of topics were covered in the letters, from inquiries about mutual friends to complaints about a new acquaintance. But Frank and Dorothy’s relationship was far from casual. On September 2, 1944, Frank wrote to his then 17-yearold girlfriend, "Darling, will you please send me your ring size? I want to get you an engagement ring. I don’t want to mail it, because I would rather put it on your finger myself.” Frank also proposed beginning a family with Dot, writing, “About the children, it's not how many we are supposed to have, it's how many we are going to have, and my lucky number is four.” It seems that the two were shaping up to have a picturesque future.

in Dorothy and Frank’s relationship. While Frank’s love for Dorothy is still clear, there are hints that she may no longer feel the same way.

Sure enough, less than two months later, Dorothy Verna married another man. Dorothy and Keith McKay were married on September 11, 1945, after being next-door neighbors for years. In the 1940 census, Keith and his family appeared next to the Verna family, having moved from Salt Lake City at some point between 1935 and 1940. Keith served in the Navy, but was wounded during the Second Battle of the Philippines when his destroyer, the USS Hoel, was sunk. Keith was hit in the leg by the same shell that killed his best friend, and was discharged in February 1945. Dorothy and Keith’s romance must have sparked during this period of Keith’s return to California, as the period from February to July seems to be when Dorothy and Frank’s relationship took a turn for the worse. Clearly, Dorothy played the classic part of the girl-next-door, as she left Frank, married Keith, and stayed married to him until Keith’s death in 2002.

But, when looking through the letters, there is a sudden change. In Frank’s letter of July 23, 1945, the affectionate tone of the previous letters is abandoned. Frank states, “Hon, I don’t have to tell you how I still feel about you, but you were frank enough about how you felt, so all I can say is I’m not giving up hope because I’ll always have a place in my heart for you.” When contrasted with the previous letters, this shows a shift

In Frank’s last letter, on October 14th, 1945, the signoff is “Your Friend” instead of the typical lovey-dovey signoff. In this message, the joyous and lovestruck Frank from previous letters is almost unrecognizable. His tone is desolate, speaking multiple times of understanding if she can’t message back; “Dottie, as I said before if you find it too much trouble answering my letter, let me know, I’ll keep writing to you anyway,” and in the same letter he says, “If you don’t I’ll understand, because I imagine you’re kind of busy with your job and everything,” referring to him possibly not receiving a letter from her. Because Dorothy was already married at the time and may have cut off her letters to Frank, this is the last letter in the collection.

But this story does not end sadly for Frank. By 1950, he was happily married to 18-year-old Ann Marie Campbell and raising a two-year-old son named Ronald. In total, Frank and Ann had three children together: Ronald, Catherine and Janis Pietila. The two raised their children to success, with Ronald even becoming a professional baseball player in the minor leagues. Ann Pietila passed away in 1996, and Dorothy McKay died in 2016. But Frank Nestor Pietila outlived them both, surviving until July 26, 2021, less than two weeks before his 97th birthday.

Many questions remain unanswered about Dorothy and Frank’s love affair. The circumstances of their meeting are unclear, as are the reasons behind the end of their relationship. The Legacy Initiative only possesses Frank’s letters to Dorothy, so Dorothy’s side of the story goes untold. But through this article, Frank and Dorothy’s love story gone wrong will live forever in history.
