ART The GCSE Art & Design exhibition was enthusiastically received by students, staff and visitors on Tuesday 25th June. Work on show was representative of the diverse individuality and broad spectrum in quality of students to walk this creative and demanding path. The overall depth of exciting, conceptual developments and research was highly praised, most evident in the work of Zoe Adamou-Dutton, Heather Cant and Amra Dorjneren. There was also deserved admiration and wonderment for the intense quality and consistent application of technical skill in the work of Jessica Malange and Gintare Poplavskaja. Well done to all the students and a big thank you to all who came and supported on the night. An extra big thank you to all those who helped behind the scenes getting the exhibition up and ready in such as short space of time.

Farewell & Trip to Royal College of Art I am retiring as Head of Art at the end of term after a long time working at Park View. The exhibition was my last, as was the trip to The Royal College of Art with Year 9 students who intend to take GCSE next year. It was a pleasure to see the MA final show and to see how well our students responded.

The course is based on the role of the firefighter and participants take part in a range of activities from using ladders, casualty rescue techniques, wearing breathing apparatus and first aid. In addition to this participants are given information on fire safety, prevention, consequences and healthy living. Mr M Osei Learning Support Assistant

Dear Parent/Carer Welcome to our SUMMER term Newsletter! A long term with so many highlights! At the time of writing Sports Day has yet to happen, but the Sports Awards and Parkstock were fantastic events once again and everyone is looking forward to Rhythm Sticks’ debut album being released next term. Beyond the big occasions every day is packed with wonderful and innovative things going on around the school as part of our curriculum. Please check the image gallery on the website for a fuller flavour. Over the last term we have spent a lot of time looking at the future development of the school. From September we will have a new vision for the next three years, including the idea of the ‘Park View Learner’ which you will hear a lot about over time. Part of this includes higher expectations on the quantity and quality of homework demanded of students. The layout of the planner will be different next year and make it easier to track the 90 minutes per day expected from Years 7 to 9 and 2 hours per day from Years 10 to 11. New after school homework clubs will be ready from September. You should also be aware that the various caffeinated energy drinks (such as Red Bull, Rockstar, Relentless and Monster) will be banned for students from September. Also, students will not be allowed to consume other fizzy drinks, chocolate, crisps and so on in the morning. Please ensure your child has a healthy breakfast either before coming to school or by coming to breakfast club. You should note that these items will not just be confiscated There has been a lot going on in Drama. if they want to have them for breakfast, they will be thrown away. second half of this year. This will culminate in them taking NEA Drama exams in Improvisation on Thursday 11th July. The exams are worth UCAS points so wish the students luck. Nakita Naker, Brunilda Haxhijaha and Jamilla Sutton have planned a Drama lesson on Improvisation which they are going to deliver to their class. Year 9 students who have opted for GCSE Drama will watch a performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and take part in a workshop led by Mountview Drama School on July 8th. Year 10 GCSE Drama students have completed practical exams worth 20% of the course, and are about to begin controlled assessment. Fingers crossed they will keep up the high standards set so far. ROMA/TRAVELLER CELEBRATION

how I behave in lessons and what I can do to support students more.

For the first time ever on the 9th, 10th and 11th June 20 EMA students delivered an assembly to the rest of the school as part of our Roma/Traveller celebration week. The KS4 ESOL group conducted all the research and put together PowerPoints, videos and music clips that highlighted some of the rich culture that the Roma/Traveller cohort. They were joined by pupils in KS3 for the presentation. We were also privileged to have a guest violinist (10 years old) who played some traditional music.

The best part was the way in which the students supported each other – there was such a buzz all week. We finished with a lunch time party and Roma dancing later in the week!

The assembly was delivered in 14 different languages, with many students having only been in the country a matter of weeks. The students’ attitude, effort and ability to deliver such high quality work was phenomenal as was the response from staff: “This was probably the best assembly I have seen at Park View School. I was so impressed to see so many students involved, supporting each other and working together. The assembly was engaging and made me think a lot about

KENWOOD HOUSE This term, ten Year 8 students have been working on a fascinating joint project with English Heritage and Chocolate Film. A local Heritage site, Kenwood House is currently under refurbishment. To celebrate its upcoming re-opening in September the Year 8s were asked to make a film about its History. After some research, the boys group consisting of Mert, Callum, Kyle, Comac and Quincy, decided their film would focus on the legal wrangling of the ‘Zong Case’. In contrast, the girls group made up of Rosezalla, Ornela, Sabrina, Venus and Raechel, opted for the more personal story of Dido Belle. Armed with cameras, sound equipment as well as a host of costumes and props they went out and filmed ‘on location’ in not only Kenwood House but also Apsley House and Hyde Park. They both starred in their films and mastered camera, sound and lighting techniques as well as editing the film together. The finished result looks incredible and will be coming soon to Park View screens! Ms A Underwood Humanities Teacher

INTERNATIONAL THEME DAY 2013 On 27th June Park View School celebrated its International Theme Day Parkstock. This was a fantastic day where all staff and students celebrated cultures from around the world. To make this day more special we invited Year 5 students from 8 different primary schools. They had their own experience of internationalism plus a wonderful show they were able to watch and take part in. Thank you to everyone involved. Ms A Kelly Parkstock Coordinator

Rhythm Sticks

Modern Foreign Languages This year has seen Rhythm Sticks focus on the making of their debut album, entitled The Hen’s Tooth. Working in partnership with Good Move! Music, PV’s Rhythm Sticks launched a crowd sourcing fundraising page via Kickstarter, in May. The quality of Rhythm Sticks also caught the attention of the press with articles published in local newspapers as well as an online feature on Jazzwise (UKs best selling Jazz magazine). With all the support Rhythm Sticks has received: Kickstarter funding, students donating Vivos, ticket sales at a showcase in May, various student fundraising efforts – we smashed our initial target and is ensuring the project proves to be resounding success. At the same time we launched a student artwork competition. Many thanks for all the entries – we received brilliant ideas and pieces of work which made the judging difficult! However, we are pleased to announce that the winner is Yr11’s Melissa Gardiner.

In MFL we had a busy year with competitions, trips, cultural exchanges and visits: students of GCSE French visited a local French patisserie, Belle Epoque, and selected students of Year 9 French spent a day at the French Institute in South Kensington. Our pen-pal letter exchange with a school in La Rochelle continued and was thoroughly enjoyed by the Year 7 students involved. Students excelled in the VocabExpress National Championships and thoroughly enjoyed the French and Spanish theatre productions again this year. The pièce de résistance for students of French was hosting a visit by 50 students from our partner school from Pau, France, which was an outstanding success. We also spent two wonderful evenings at the Pradera tapas restaurant in Hornsey with students of Spanish. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my colleagues, in particular, Mr

In June we spent an intense and brilliant weekend recording at the renowned studio, The POOL in south London. These tracks were then mixed by PV’s Patrick Moore and sent off to Stardelta to be mastered – ensuring a full-length album was recorded, mixed, mastered & CDs manufactured within a month! A tremendous feat! The CD album will be made available and released in November with some exciting shows to support. News of which to follow! Mr A Plummer Music Technician

DUKE OF EDINBURGH This year Park View launched The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (The DofE) at Bronze Level. It has given me great pleasure to set up such a scheme that has engaged and motivated students so much. The DofE has facilitated 25 young people to develop a personal programme of challenging activities, building on existing skills or developing new ones. Students have created their own DofE programme by choosing a volunteering, physical and skills activity and going on an expedition.

Notice to current Year 9: taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is highly recognised by employers and universities and we would encourage all students to take part in this opportunity, look out for the launch next academic year to get involved. I’m incredibly proud of all the DofE participant, congratulation and well done on completing your Bronze Award. Ms Henning DofE Coordinator

The climax of their experience has involved a 25km practice expedition to Lee Valley, and their qualifying expedition, which totals a 30km hike in and around the Chiltern Hills, an area of outstanding beauty. Please see the school website for further pictures. Students have shown immense resilience, inner drive and ownership completing this challenge. Throughout their experience, the DofE participants have developed a wealth of self-belief, self-confidence, a sense of identity, independence, responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving, and presentation and communication skills.

Farewell Ms Henning continue to research the maritime history of the River Thames.

The Humanities department has been buzzing with energy in the run up to the summer holidays. The Year 7s have been deeply engaged exploring London. They have thoroughly enjoyed cruising down the River Thames from Westminster to Greenwich, which gave them an in-depth look into London’s past, present and future. They alighted to witness the beautiful Cutty Sark. After which, students excitedly ran up to the top of Greenwich Park, where they observed the stunning views of London’s skyline whilst standing on the GMT line. After lunch, they strolled down the lush gardens into the Naval College where they

During the Summer Term, 20 Year 8 students have been taking part in an initiative to build upon key skills. They were set a challenge to fund raise £1000. In order to do this, they have independently organised several fund raising events, one being the end of Year 8 party. The level of work and creativity students have been putting into this challenge is sensational and the development of selfconfidence, commitment, teamwork and collaboration is really pleasing (and obvious) to see. Continuing to build on these key skills and more, these students will head off to Wales to explore the beauty and tranquility of the Brecon Beacons. This academic year has proved hugely successful for all students studying Humanities subjects at Park View, with record rates of progress made. The quality

of provision is testament to the outstanding and highly committed team of teachers we have working within the Humanities team. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank them for their extraordinary work and contribution to student life and success at Park View. I would like to let the school community know that I’ve decided to experience my lifetime dream to go travelling around the world. My time at Park View has been life changing, and it’s fair to say that throughout my seven years at Park View, I have learnt as much, if not more, as the students I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. The support and guidance from members of staff, has enabled me to provide a multitude of opportunities for students at Park View, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all. Please see the website for further pictures of all the students achieving such great heights. I wish you all a restful holiday and a bright future. Ms Henning HOD Humanities

MESSAGE FROM PE What an amazing term our Park View students have had. As the Head of PE I can honestly say, hand on heart that this is one of the most pleasurable times I have experienced at Park View and quite possibly in my career to date. There has been so much that has taken place over the last term that our community should be proud of. The annual Sports Tour is getting bigger and better each year. This year for the first time ever netball has toured Europe along with basketball, dance and football. The tour somehow managed to base themselves in the renowned “Centre Parks where Park View were awarded a number of prestigious awards by the host sports clubs. A number of lucky students were invited to attend the Grand Slam Tennis competition taking place at Wimbeldon and look forward to seeing over 200 members of our school attend the 2013 Annual Sports Awards.

We have been crowned 2013 champions this summer term in the following district sports: Girls Year 10/11 athletics, rounders U14. The tennis teams have grown to the stage where a tennis leaders course has been arranged where over sixteen PV youngsters are due to become qualified and then able to work at a Tennis club as a club coach. The PE Department hope you all have a healthy and active six weeks holiday and look forward to a fabulous 2013-14 academic year. Mr A Neophytou Head of PE
