Sky Sports Living for Sport Mentor Hannah Beharry at Park View Boxing for England and Great Britain, with a string of gold medals under her belt, Hannah Beharry is an inspirational role model and ambassador for the positive influence of sport. Park View was assigned Hannah as an athlete mentor through it's affiliation with Sky Sports Living for Sport. Hannah visited Park View on Tuesday 27th September and worked with a number of GCSE PE students in Years 10 and 11. She spoke about her difficult upbringing and how sport positively changed her life. Her messages were inspiring and influential for the students as she emphasised how important it is to stay focused, work hard and leave school feeling proud of their achievements.

Her dedication to her sport and decision to make life changing choices proved to the students that anyone can achieve anything they work hard enough for. During Hannah Beharry’s second visit, students enjoyed a great mentoring session with the boxing champion, where students participated in group work activities and a fitness session.

RAF Fun with Flight STEM Roadshow In partnership with:

British Aerospace and Royal Air Force representatives visited our school to deliver an exciting STEM show on the physics of flight. Year 8 and 9 students were given the opportunity to discover how the physics they study in the classroom is an integral part of the work that engineers undertake in the RAF and other engineering organisations.

Our students were especially enthused to meet a member of the RAF and were interested to learn about his every day activities as an Officer. Students gained an insight into careers with the RAF and got the opportunity to ask many intelligent questions.

The fundamental science of flight was highlighted through exciting demonstrations by a drone, balloons and 3D virtual reality. Students learnt about the microlight world altitude record and the physics behind how the RAF achieved their goal.

Park View Students Aiming to get The Careers department at Park View works throughout the academic year in partnership with a charity based organisation called IntoUniversity, whose programme provides young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the help they need to achieve their potential.

The programme helped to boost my confidence. Now I don't feel shy to talk - Year 7 student We work with up to thirty students from each Year group on a series of workshops as part of the FOCUS programme. On 27th September Year 11 students participated in a ‘Communication in the Workplace’ workshop.

I really enjoyed the problem solving because I like investigating and analysing things. It was so much fun Year 11 student On 8th November, Year 7 and Year 8 students participated in bespoke workshops titled ‘Choosing Success’ and ‘Learning Techniques’. The school curriculum doesn’t always make links with the university experience of concentrated, passionate learning in a specialist area.

I learnt about the university and the many different courses that you can study - there's a course for everyone - Year 11 student

The FOCUS programme offers young people learning experiences which aim to immerse them in a single topic or subject area. It includes confidence building, extending horizons, teamwork skills, leadership, pathways to the future, raising aspirations, making right choices and normalising the aspiration of going to university.

I definitely learnt more about how to speak in front of people and how to debate confidently - Year 8 student By embedding career education within these workshops and delivery of aspiration events, the Careers department and IntoUniversity’s aims are that the work carried out reflect the following values; talent, quality, compassion, aspiration and teamwork.

Champions! Elm House finalists Mohamed and Wesley in Year 9 pulled out all the stops in the final and were crowned this year's MasterChef winners. The duo served up a delicious dish of beef tacos with fresh guacamole and salsa along with a decadent banoffee pie for dessert. The boys faced intense competition from Dilan and Shanaya from Oak House, Ammon and Marcel from Cedar and Raul and Ioan from Maple. All four teams had fought off over 100 participants through four intense heats including a chop stick challenge and a guess the ingredient round.

which included chefs from Wilson Jones Catering Company. The Elm House winners were rewarded with 1000 House points along with a trophy and baking kits so they can continue to hone their skills. Wilson Jones, who have been an incredible support throughout the planning and running of the competition, served their winning dishes in the canteen for the whole school on Thursday 3rd November. Well done to all the students who made it to the MasterChef final!

By the time the big final arrived, the contestants were ready, armed with their own recipes, trays of ingredients and determination. Each team had one hour to showcase their skill and creativity in the kitchen and impress the panel of judges,

India Inked! at G511ERY Students learnt screen printing techniques, employing blocking with soap, to produce their own hand-pulled prints. Such was the success of the day, a selection of work was chosen to be exhibited in the gallery alongside the main public exhibition that opened on Friday 4th November.

During the October half term break, Year 11 students had the opportunity to work with printmaker and gallerist Danny Flynn at his art space G511ERY on Seven Sisters Road.

It was great to see so many students, parents, staff and governors present at the show, along with the public, in celebration and support of the students’ achievements. Further such collaboration between the students and G511ERY is set to continue.

The themes of identity and diaspora were the background to an experimental printmaking workshop lead by Danny, and supported by historian and PhD researcher Marina Carter of Edinburgh University.

Visit to London Transport Museum On Thursday 3rd November, Year 10 Design and Technology students visited the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. The students explored the City of London and gained an insight into the transport heritage of Britain’s capital city. They spent the morning discovering how London Transport has changed over the years, exploring horse and carts, old fashioned buses and tubes to our present day transport systems.

16

Further sections of the museum were dedicated to showing the development of the iconic tube signs, learning about the manufacture of the tube and bus

interiors, as well as uncovering the designer of London’s tube map, Harry Beck. To end the day, students strolled along the Golden Jubilee Bridge and South Bank to take in the beautiful sights and historical landmarks. Students used this opportunity to take an array of pictures and produce sketches to support them in their Graphics communication - ‘London Project’. The trip was a huge success, both staff and students shared encouraging feedback.

Artist Workshop at Saatchi Gallery On Wednesday 30th November Year 9 students braved it through the rush hour commute to the Saatchi Gallery, to take part in a workshop with artist Alice Wilson. This was part one of a four-part exchange with Wilson and the Saatchi Gallery, which involves two further workshops – one at Park View and a concluding public exhibition of student work at the Saatchi Gallery in the Spring. In response to their immediate surroundings of the gallery spaces, building structure, and art work on display, students recorded, considered and developed ideas on the theme Inclusion, with a specific focus on collaboration and overlapping processes and techniques.

Students divided into groups to produce huge group drawings, before making efforts to unite all the work through the creation of a multi-coloured ‘spiders web’ that spanned the room, tangling up anyone who dared enter the space. Needless to say, a lot of fun was had in exploring these visual and

spacial possibilities. Students are now looking to develop their ideas further back in the classroom, in anticipation of Alice Wilson’s visit next term.

Our Student Council Represents Park View at Haringey Youth Council

The Park View Student Council

On Wednesday 19th October Park View’s Student Council representatives visited Haringey Youth Council, where they participated in a 2-hour workshop with students from

other secondary schools across Haringey. Discussions involved the role of Haringey Youth Council and what changes they could implement in Haringey. Haringey Youth Council exists to represent the views of young people in Haringey. It provides a voice for young people aged 8-19 years, enabling them to make their views heard. This is a great opportunity for students to represent our school in the

borough, meet other young people and gain new skills, knowledge and experiences. An election will be taking place to elect different key members for Haringey Youth Council to decide on how a funding of approximately £7,000 can be spent and how best they can represent all the young people in Haringey.

Building Bridges to University Life: Year 10 University Aspiration Trips On Wednesday 2nd November all Year 10 Students took part in aspiration visits to four prestigious universities – all of which are campus based, I am in order to give definitely students a chance looking to see what life forward to and study is like going to on a day to day university in setting in Higher the future. Education. The universities included Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford Campus), Brunel University, Canterbury

Christ Church University and The University of Reading.

You can do so many different sport courses at Brunel. I was truly amazed!

Each university offered a programme on the day that was designed to help students learn a variety of interesting facts about university education and campus life and break down the barriers of progression towards university study. For example, students

who visited Brunel got to see students studying in a multicultural environment as well as the largest and one of the most technologically advanced Sports Halls in the country, where Usain Bolt trains regularly every summer in preparation for the season ahead.

I got to see how the whole place was set and got an idea of university life - the university budgeting exercise was a real eye opener!

All students involved in the trips gained many ideas and facts about university life and education and came away more positive about their individual potential for the future.

National Enterprise Finals In June, a team of six students from Year 9 participated in the Ryman National Enterprise finals held in Doncaster, having been selected from a total of 35,000 students who had participated in the challenge. The team developed an idea around helping students better prepare for school where they had to pitch their ‘iSchool’ app to a panel of judges. The students were incredible and carried themselves with professionalism and maturity throughout the day. They impressed the judges with their confidence, presentation style and how well thought through their idea was. They were unlucky not to make the final four, even though they presented in the KS4 category competing against Year 11 students. After pitching their idea, students sat in an audience for a Q&A session with Theo Paphitis from

Dragons Den and then enjoyed an inspiration talk by Eddie ‘The Eagle’ on his career. The whole day was a fantastic experience and we are incredibly proud of the effort, commitment and creativity the students showed.

Former Park View Student Plays in FA Cup Qualifying Match Former Park View student Ahmed Mohamed represented Waltham Forest FC in the first qualifying round of the prestigious FA Cup. Ahmed’s extraordinary footballing skills made him one of the youngest players on the pitch during the FA Cup qualifying round. He looked extremely comfortable on the ball and played with confidence

throughout in his defence midfield role - not allowing the pressure of the occasion affect his performance. Waltham Forest beat Stotfold 2-1 and now face a tough second qualifying round against Folkstone Invicta.

Launch of 'Choices' at Park View A new service providing access to emotional support for children, young people and their families was launched at Park View on 10th November. The project is funded by Haringey CCG and provided by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey NHS Trust, and was devised by Dr. Nick Barnes. Park View School was chosen for the launch because of our HSJ award winning project which included the Time2Talk mentors who provide student to student support for emotional well-being in school. Four members of the T2T mentor team (Jack, Kioni, Ivo and Sunzida), spoke eloquently to the assembled health professionals and service users. Park View aims to run ‘Choices’ sessions in school, as a ‘first-stop’ service to support our students and parents.

Time2Talk, the in school peer to peer mentoring, is available to any student, simply contact Mr P Czajkowski, Ms S Aydemir or Ms C Doherty in school.

National Citizenship Service Our Year 11 students are given the opportunity to take part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS) Challenge each summer. Run over two weeks, the three-part programme for 15-17 year olds starts as an adventure outward bound course, then develops team building and project management skills in a university setting; finally moving to supporting the students in creating a local social enterprise project. It is perfect for boosting CV experience, personal statements, and UCAS forms. It’s also an unforgettable and fun experience which builds confidence and independence. We will be launching the programme again in January 2017 with a special assembly and some lunchtime stalls. We received a recognition from the government for our work last year and are very pleased to be taking part again this year.

22

Please encourage our Year 11 students to choose this as one of their summer holiday activities between school and college/sixth form. It gives young people the chance to get active, get involved and make a mark on their communities in a positive way. We look forward to seeing a large group of Year 11 students taking part in summer 2017.

Park View Dancers Perform at Chestnuts Primary School Year 7 and 8 Park View Dance students took part in Chestnuts Primary School ‘International Celebration Evening’ on Thursday 20th October. The event was a fantastic evening for dance and music from all over the world and a celebration of different cultures. The dancers opened the show to an audience of students and parents from the local community. They put on an incredible performance and were well appreciated by their audience - many of which were out of their seat by the end of the show.
