DEAR PARENTS AND CARERS

W

elcome to our spring Update from Park View. As always, this edition is filled with a selection of fantastic achievements and exciting activities that Park View pupils have taken part in this term.

I would like to start by thanking all pupils, staff and parents for your support with the launch of our revised Behaviour Policy this January. I have been very impressed by how well Park View students have engaged with the changes and how supportive parents have been in helping us to embed them. We are always looking for ways to build upon and enhance the learning experiences of our pupils and this key initiative has been instrumental in strengthening our community spirit and improving behaviour across the school. We are rapidly approaching exam season and I am impressed by the effort and commitment that our Year 11 cohort are demonstrating at this important time. The Year 11 pastoral team and subject areas are working tirelessly to ensure that this cohort are fully prepared for the challenges they face in their GCSE exams. We are running an intensive programme for Year 11 revision during the Easter Holidays - the revision schedule will soon be available on our website. As always, we are looking for ways to develop our communication with parents and the community. Over the next few weeks we will be holding parents evenings for years 7 and 11. In addition, we will be holding Year 9 Options Evening on Thursday 21st April, where our Year 9 cohort will choose their GCSE options for KS4. The 2016/17 options booklet is now available to view and download from our website. Finally I would like to wish everyone a fantastic Easter break. I look forward to welcoming back all pupils on Monday 11th April at 8.20am. Andy Webster Headteacher

PARK VIEW LAUNCH NEW PUBLIC ART SPACE: FRAME

N

ew public art space FRAME launched on Wednesday 2nd March located under the Seven Sisters railway bridge on West Green Road. FRAME is an artist project space run and curated by Artist and Park View Art teacher Alexander Costello. Developed in response to the desire and necessity to give students at Park View the real artist experience through the provision of a public platform and exhibition space that will recognise and appreciate the value and quality of artwork created in the classroom. The art space will exhibit a selected portfolio of work by the young artists at Park View on a monthly rotation, in celebration of the work produced in school and encouraging young people to pursue their interests and talents in Art. First to exhibit work was Park View student Zeynep Yayar, who said “I feel proud knowing the public can see my artwork. It’s a great

opportunity to gain that exposure and has given me an insight to how it would feel to have my work exhibited at a larger scale - it’s a great achievement for me”. Commenting on the exhibition, fellow Park View student Cheinaz Cordeiro said, “It’s a nice opportunity - having my work up there would make me feel appreciated. The best thing was actually seeing people there supporting”. The long term aim, as the space expands its audience and public reach, is to develop projects that also includes artwork by students from neighbouring Haringey schools, supported by collaborations and commissions by recognised local and international artists. For further information and updates on FRAME projects follow @FRAME_projects on Twitter and Instagram. Mr A Costello Acting Head of Art

THE HYDROGEN CHALLENGE

A

rcola Energy and Hydrogen London - the Mayoral programme that works towards developing London’s Hydrogen economy launched their third London Schools Hydrogen Challenge. On Tuesday 19th January, they delivered two 1.5 hour workshops to all our Year 10 Triple Science students. The workshop taught our pupils about renewable energy, hydrogen fuel cells, iterative design, scientific enquiry and mechanics. Students were challenged to design, race and build the most fuel efficient hydrogen powered vehicle. Our two winning teams, Kioni, Precious and Temi, and Haroon, Jack, Luqman and Rahiel are invited to an exciting final event to be held at London’s City Hall. They will be competing against twenty five other participating schools from across London. Last year we came in the top five after building a vehicle powered by a small syringe of hydrogen that travelled 16 metres! Our winning teams have built vehicles that have already exceeded our best last year and have shown great potential in being fine engineers of the future. Ms E Soliman Head of Science

TIM PRENDERGAST VISITS PARK VIEW

O

n Friday 29th January, paralympian Tim Prendergast visited our school and shared his story and his six steps to success with a group of Year 9 GCSE PE students. Tim also presented in the Year 10 assembly, ran two skillsessions and theory lessons discussing the steps to success with the pupils. At age eight, Tim Prendergast began losing his sight, and by thirteen his vision had depleted by over 90 per cent. Despite this and the troubles he experienced whilst he was coming to terms with his impairment, Tim still maintained a burning passion for sport and found real enjoyment in running. In 2004 Tim represented New Zealand at his second Paralympic Games in Athens where he won a gold medal in the 800m race. Tim really enjoyed his visit to Park View and said he will remember his conversations with Year 10 students and also the outstanding effort Year 9 GCSE students showed in every session. Mr B Smart Teacher of P.E. & Head of Year 11

Born just two minutes apart, the sisters have always had shared life ambitions to become social scientists. Ianisha said,

The Director of Tutorial and University Progression at Sir George Monoux Sixth Form College, said,

“I’ve always been fascinated by why there is so much inequality and human suffering in the world. Studying Sociology allows us to tackle human problems, challenge discrimination and contest stereotypes”.

“Huge congratulations to Ianisha and Tanisha for receiving top university offers! Both students are outstanding and have worked incredibly hard; they truly deserve this. Their success reflects the fantastic offers that we have been seeing across the college; with offers coming in from almost every Russell Group university so far”.

Ianisha and Tanisha are now working hard in preparation for their summer examinations. Tanisha said, “We’re really enjoying studying the same subjects together at College. We learn together, we revise together, help each other and can confide in each other”.

THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS TUTORING PROGRAMME

T

he London School of Economics tutoring programme has returned to Park View School for the third consecutive year. A total of twenty four pupils from Year 8 are being tutored and mentored in Maths and Science by students from one of the most prestigious and internationally recognised universities in the country.

HARINGEY INDOOR ATHLETICS

T

he Year 9 boys team were victorious again at the Haringey Indoor Athletics Championship narrowly defeating local rivals St Thomas More. The team was captained by recent Middlesex County Cross Country silver medallist - Ahmed Sharif took first place in the 800m race. Other winners included student Maltitie Fusseini, in the 200m and Stuart Patterson in the High Jump. Mr R Ernest Year 8 Team Deputy and Athletics Team Manager

Park View is proud to be involved in building a strong partnership with The London School of Economics (LSE). The programme has been successful in recent years in terms of raising our pupils’ attainment, GCSE grades and attitudes to higher education, with many more students applying for the programme this year. It is fantastic that the tutors from LSE come from all over the world with unique and inspiring stories of how and why they are studying at LSE, which is hugely important in a school of such diversity as Park View. We will mainly be focusing on core subjects such as English, Maths and Science with pupils in Years 8 and 9 with the aim of moving into other subject areas in Years 10 and 11 during their GCSEs. YEAR 10 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE ‘SPEAK OUT CHALLENGE’ REGIONAL FINALS

O

n Tuesday 2nd February two of our talented Year 10 students, Luqman Liaquat and Haroon Aftab, participated in the Haringey regional final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. The Speak Out Challenge is a public speaking competition which takes place in hundreds of schools across the country and encourages students to talk for two minutes on any subject they choose. Our most confident Year 10 public speakers took part in two days of workshops where Luqman and Haroon were chosen to represent Park View at the event. Despite stiff competition from other Haringey schools, the boys excelled with entertaining and informative speeches on video games and the importance of apples across history - featuring Adam and Eve, Isaac Newton and Steve Jobs. They did a fantastic job and were a real credit to Park View. Ms E Clarke Acting Assistant Head

WORLD BOOK DAY

O

n Thursday 3rd March, students and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day. The school library was dedicated to just reading in order to encourage students to read and enjoy books. Students also got involved with other activities throughout the day including games of charades where students mimed and guessed book titles. In celebration of World Book Day, Tottenham-born Adele wrote a letter to Park View School about her love for reading. The award winning singer inspired the students with her words, she explained how “books are like a holiday and a party all rolled into one. They can take you somewhere great or terrible depending on what kind you read”. Mr E Gebremeskel LRC Manager

STEM ROADSHOW

O

n Tuesday 23rd February, Year 7 and 9 were treated to a STEM roadshow presentation by BAE systems and the RAF exploring the world of waves in water, light and sound and their application in the world around us. The presentation examined how engineers and scientists use their understanding of different kinds of waves to create sophisticated communications systems, how fibre optics are revolutionising the marine world and how ships and submarines can withstand the crushing pressures of the waves at sea. Students participated in some of the experiments, discovering how sound waves can be manipulated, the use of lasers and how loop pedals can be used to produce a wave themed piece of music. It was a jam-packed educational experience for both year groups which we hope inspired Park View pupils to pursue STEM related further education or careers. Ms M Selman Teacher of Science

DANCE EVENTS COMING SOON

O

ver the past few years there have been many Park View dancers who have gone onto college and university to continue their studies in Dance. Some of the older students are now successfully working in the industry as professional dancers or are studying to become teachers. Dance has played a huge part in nurturing their gifts and talents and in providing them with a platform to express themselves at an early stage of their careers. In light of these great successes we feel that it is time to celebrate our students and encourage them to be creative and work with each other outside of friendship groups, genders and age groups. The Dance Department has been extremely busy this term preparing for our very own Park View Dance Showcase called ‘Virtuoso’ that will be held in the main hall on Wednesday 13th April during period 5. Since auditioning back in December, the dancers have been busy choreographing their solos, duets and group pieces in order to put on a dance showcase that will leave you feeling truly inspired. On Tuesday 26th April, Park View will be hosting the ‘Step into Dance- Spring Sharing’s Competition’. Heat 4 of the regional competition will take place at 5:30pm in the main hall. The extra-curricular dance group has been working tirelessly to perfect their audition piece in order to make it through to the next stage in late May 2016. If successful, the dancers will gain the opportunity to perform at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in Angel, which is a breath-taking experience for any dancer to say the least. Ms S Malcolm Head of Dance

YEAR 10 FOOTBALL TEAM

T

his year has seen the Year 10 football team adapt with some new additions to the squad - which include: Suheib ‘the machine’ Osman, Vasili ‘silky touch’ Koreta, Jake ‘keep it simple’ Lynch and Ferhat ‘safe hands’ Yilmazer. Mergim has excelled in the captaincy role, demanding high energy levels and effort from him and his team mates throughout the season, leading by example. The team finished third in their Haringey 7-a-side tournament, which saw them competing against all Haringey Schools. Coming back after the winter break the boys have kicked off the second half of their season playing away against Gladesmore School, winning 2-0. Jordon slotted home the two goals with Vasili picking up man of the match for his hard work and determination playing in his opening 11-a-side game for the team. The team have three matches left of their season and are hoping to continue their winning streak. Mr B Sack P.E. Second in Charge and Football Team Manager

PARK VIEW STUDENTS TEAM UP WITH UNDERGRADUATES IN ‘BUDDY DAY’ SCHEME

O

n Wednesday 3rd February, a select group of Year 8 students from Park View attended a workshop programme at City University - where they met their university student ‘Buddies’ and took part in inspirational activities about university education. The Buddy Day Scheme is an initiative that offers Year 8 pupils the opportunity to learn about university life by question and answer sessions with the undergraduates as well as taking part in interactive workshops. The scheme is specifically designed to help students build confidence and think about future education and student life in university. The event was planned by the Careers department at Park View and IntoUniversity - a charity based organisation who offer an innovative programme that supports young people by inspiring them to attain either a university place or another chosen progression opportunity. Park View Year 8 students had a very positive day. Here are some quotes from the students: “The great thing about this programme was meeting university students because we can learn more about university life”

“The best thing was doing the question time debate because it built my confidence speaking in front of people” “I definitely learnt about speaking in front of people and I learnt how to debate” “I learnt about university and the different courses that you can study”. Mr C Kennington Careers Advisor

MOSAIC ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE

A

cross January, some of Park View’s Year 9 students competed in the Mosaic Enterprise Challenge. Teams of five students from each form group worked with mentors from the business world to complete an online enterprise and business game. The students learned about a variety of business concepts through playing the game, as well as learning more about ethical business practices through case studies of companies. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with some teams even coming back during lunchtimes in order to re-run the game and achieve an even higher score. Their efforts have paid off, as the 9P team are one of five teams selected for the London-wide final in March. The students will be presenting their own ethical business idea to a panel of judges. We are

extremely proud of all their hard work and determination and wish 9P very well for the final! Thank you to Mr Hill for all his hard work in organising the event. Ms E Clarke Acting Assistant Headteacher

WILLOW CRAFT WORKSHOP

O

n Saturday 5th March, a Willow Craft Workshop funded by The Big Lottery Fund took place at Park View where students and parents had fun creating willow structures. The weather was not great but we were still able to get so much made for Mothers’ Day, which included red dogwood, willow `tortuoso`, dried gold sunflowers, waxy bay leaves and sprays of `gypsophillia` on the ingredients list. Garlands were woven and decorated with spring flowers as part of our EDEN Project. After a warming lunch of hot chocolate and sponge cakes, we cracked on with an active task of digging holes to secure the willow poles for the geodesic dome near the pond. One of the participants, Henry in Year 6 who is due to join Park View in September, thought the den would be perfect for reading inside during the summer.

SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE

O

n Wednesday 13th January, students Evelyn Alaran in Year 10 and Ruben Neves in Year 8 represented Park View at the "Schools for the Future" project which took place at Woodside High School. The aim of the project was to support schools across Europe to use global citizenship education to help improve learning both in and out of class. Both staff and students shared their projects through an app with four other countries in Europe. The purpose of SFYOUTH is to increase educational engagement and active civic participation through using Youth Philanthropy in formal and informal education. The students will be organising many different activities by the end of the year for different international charities. We wish them the best of luck.
