elcome to the February issue of Designer Kitchen & Bathroom magazine. This month marks a rather big milestone for us – our 150th issue! We’ve covered a lot of changes during the last 12 (and a bit) years. Trends and fashions have come and gone, indeed in that time, some pretty major K&B brands have come and gone too.

Welcome to the February issue of Designer Kitchen & Bathroom magazine

One thing that remains the same however, is our commitment to bringing you the most inspirational kitchens and bathroom ideas from right across the industry. That mission begins right now, with the first of our reports from last month’s very impressive Living Kitchen show in Cologne on page 18, with much more to come over the next few issues. Next month, we also have the ISH exhibition in Frankfurt to look forward to, where the very best of the bathroom sector will be stating their visions for the future of the market. From what we’ve seen so far, there are plenty of great design ideas in store to make the year ahead an interesting one for us all.

Enjoy the issue!

Introducing our new monthly round-up of industry news, opinions and talking points

the big question

Q - How important is music to the ambience of a showroom? Graham Griffin, Owner, A2Z Kitchens, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire: Music will remove the hardness of a showroom which sometime can hinder a potential client in connecting to you and your business. It creates a more relaxed position and I feel as a designer it helps with free flowing ideas as well. Jakki James, Sales and Design Director, Bathing Design Studio, Wetherby, West Yorkshire: I find music brings the showroom alive and gives an atmosphere.

We choose easy listening mixes to cater to a wide audience. I wouldn't be without it. Hannah Barnes, Owner, Hannah Barnes Designs, Stockport: I think that in a showroom where you are trying to ʻsell a lifestyleʼ, you should aim to excite all the senses with music, scent, clever lighting, and tactile surfaces that the customer will want to touch and look at more closely. Having a lovely coffee on hand always helps too!

The music should be in line with the brand or style on display. I recently visited a trade outlet dressed with beautiful interiors, but was really let down by the silence of the space – there was no atmosphere and clientsʼ footsteps echoed on the floorboards. Graham Robinson, Showroom Manager, Haycyon Interiors, London: Music is a definite must as it helps to create a comfortable

atmosphere. We tend to use compilations that are not too vocal. All other senses need to be stimulated too, so scent and lighting are also very important. Nigel Davies, Designer, Dream Design, Christchurch, Dorset: We have music playing softly in the background. I think it helps people relax and talk more freely. We try to have music that people know and can sing along to.

New Direction For Appliance Brand

MULTIFACETED DESIGN EVENT FOR LONDON

Küppersbusch has announced that the handling of the sales and marketing activities of Küppersbusch UK is to be transferred from its current partner, Teka Products to The 1810 Company as from 2 April 2013.

Exhibition organiser UBM has announced the launch of a new London-based event that will bring together a number of design industry strands under one roof.

Mark Lawrence, joint Managing Director of Küppersbusch, said: “In line with a worldwide strategy, Küppersbusch is to be positioned as a premium product. The experience of the management team at The 1810 Company makes them the ideal company to take the product forward with the re-positioning of the brand.”

The May Design Series 2013 will target the architectural, retail, interior design and property communities. Taking place at London ExCel from 19 – 21 May 2012, it will feature strands covering the best in furniture, fabric, lighting, kitchen, architectural lighting, accessories and bathroom brands.

Küppersbusch launched a complete new range at LivingKitchen in Cologne last month, although the existing range is still available via Teka Products in the meantime. Gareth Williams, Managing Director of The 1810 Company said, “Küppersbusch has been a big part of my life for nearly 30 years and I am delighted to have the opportunity to establish Küppersbusch in what I believe is its rightful position in the market. There is, however, a lot of work to do in order to reach that goal. We are aware that we need to be service driven if we are to compete with the established leaders in this sector. We will be making some key appointments over the coming months, primarily with a dedicated Service Manager for London. There is definitely a market for another premium product with a controlled distribution policy and sales strategy.”

Andrée Putman, Interior and Product Designer, 1925-2013

Central to the show will be the London edition of kbb, whilst three other shows make up the rest of the event: DX; Interiors LDN; and The Arc Show. Exhibitors confirmed so far include: Rolf Benz, Poggenpohl, Moooi, Ligne Roset, Hitch Mylius, Timorous Beasties, deadgood, Harlequin, Arredo3, ERCO, KKDC, and Leicht. Andrew Vaughan, Brand Director for the May Design Series, says: “With London firmly positioned as one of the design and retail capitals of the world, we are thrilled to bring something new to its ever-evolving schedule.

“The May Design Series has been carefully designed to create a unique experience for the retail and contract markets, bringing a full spectrum of inspirational exhibitors and market leaders together to provide access to the best in UK and international design in one London location.” The event will be given its creative edge by designer Ab Rogers and SBID President Vanessa Brady who will be creating a distinctive layout for the space. Hidden The latest in ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ kitchens is from German manufacturer Warendorf… Open-plan logic suggests that the kitchen needs to be able to keep a low profile when not in use, and yet be primed for a grand reveal when it is called into action.

An eye-catching example was on show at Living Kitchen in Cologne last month when Warendorf unveiled its Hidden Kitchen concept design. Already in receipt of an Interior Innovation Award from the German Design Council, the kitchen is the ultimate in conversation pieces. The kitchen run is concealed within bookend tall units and hidden behind large panels, only coming into view when needed. At the touch of a button, the central section of the wall of units – across a length of five metres – opens up to reveal the working space with storage areas, shelving, extractor and integrated lighting. i

“The central section of the wall of units – across a length of five metres – 20 opens up to reveal the working space with storage areas, shelving, extractor and integrated lighting” pg

Positioned around the flexible working area and integrated behind the fronts are storage units, pull-outs and electrical appliances, which continue to be accessible even when the central niche is closed. The surface chosen for the Hidden Kitchen has a natural rust finish. It is made up of a special mixture of iron particles which is sprayed on by hand in the same way as a lacquer coating. The degree of oxidation of the rust finish can be finely altered so each front is unique. Over a total length of seven metres, the rust on the imposing wall combination radiates earthy warmth but with a bold industrial accent, whether the kitchen is in the open or closed position.i Warendorf | www.warendorf.eu www.designerkbmag.co.uk

Gaggenau’s new 200 Series ovens are designed to be as one with their surroundings German appliance brand Gaggenau has traditionally been all about standing out. The high-end appliances are instantly recognisable and – in the case of its ovens – have literally stood out, with a protruding front that makes it a key feature of any kitchen it is specified for. At Living Kitchen in Cologne last month, the company launched its new 200 Series ovens, designed to be built-in flush with their surroundings.

Available in Gaggenau anthracite, metallic or silver, the range consists of ovens, Combi-steam and steam ovens, Combi-microwave ovens, microwaves, espresso machines and warming drawers. The 60cm wide appliances all come with full glass fronts and with doors that open up to an angle of 110 degrees. Available from March 2013, all ovens in the 200 Series also feature TFT touch display with two rotary controls knobs

to operate the key functions. Also unveiled at Living Kitchen was the new 400 Series, featuring handleless doors and panel-free glass-fronted surfaces as well as the control module with TFT display which can be positioned either at the top or the bottom of the appliance according to the kitchen design. They are available in 76 or 60cm-wide sizes and are built in a distinctive overhang of 47mm at the front. i

A number of new kitchen designs presented at Living Kitchen in Cologne last month accentuated the importance of ergonomics. k7 by Austrian manufacturer Team 7 was one of several that addressed this vital issue with an adjustable worksurface height. Designed by Kai Stania, the kitchen is based around an island which can be adjusted between 74cm and 114cm to suit the user or the function required at the time. The height can be changed at the touch of a button. At its full height, the worktop is ideal for taller users to prepare food. At the lowest position – and with fittings retracted and sink covered – it doubles as a simple sideboard and so is suitable for open-plan flexibility. The operating control is flushmounted and integrated into the edge of the worksurface. The island itself is handleless with electronic touch-operated drawers. The mix of materials also gives k7 a strong aesthetic, utilising natural wood, coloured glass fronts, quartz stone or ceramic for the work surface and stainless steel to neatly combine a look that is at the same time both natural and urban.i Team 7 | www.team7.at

Flexible Friend Dornbracht’s new Pivot tap does exactly as the name would suggest, making it something of an all-action kitchen fitting

With a 360° radius of activity, this new tap from Dornbracht offers plenty of flexibility for performing a number of water-dispensing tasks in the kitchen, acting as an alternative to retracting-hose spray heads. Envisaged as a moving hub of the cooking island, the tap has a clever twojoint connection to allow the spout to be rotated and positioned in a range of different ways for filling pans whilst they are on the hob, in the sink or anywhere within range on the worksurface. It also features a rotary handle on top of the outlet to make it easy to operate and highly ergonomic. Its scaled-back form is in keeping with the similarly sleek design of Dornbracht’s Tara Ultra series. The notchless lever rounds off the streamline look. Designed by prolific design studio Sieger Design, Pivot is available in chrome and matt platinum surface finishes.i Dornbracht | www.dornbracht.com

Offering much more than meets the eye, this is the Anima kitchen designed by Emanuel Gargano and Marco Fagioli for Binova. Inspired by the efficient setup often found in mechanical and craft workshops with their easy-access tool cabinets and workbenches, the island’s central cabinet is motorised and rises up and disappears again at the touch of a button on the remote control. When in use all the utensils used in the preparation, cooking and washing of food are displayed and when

hidden, the user is left with an extra-large and clutter-free working area complete with integral sink and gas hob. Gargano says: “In recent years, the kitchen environment has become increasingly open to the living area. We think that the traditional kitchen with its typical base units, wall units with electrical appliances and visible tools is something that should be overcome. “This solution of the doublefaced wall unit sliding inside the island resolves not only the issue of containing kitchen equipment but also

storing elements dedicated to the living area, such as a TV screen, DVD and CD player and mobile bar. From the living side, the guest can enjoy the atmosphere without seeing any kitchen tools thus reinforcing the sense of being in a living area.” The Anima kitchen island with its disappearing ‘wall units’ serves as a natural divide between living and cooking areas. Tall units feature sliding doors housing pantry storage and concealing all electrical appliances such as ovens, fridges and dishwashers.

First created as a concept kitchen and presented at Eurocucina in Milan in 2008, the kitchen is now available to buy in any size and is custommade to order. Available in the UK from Barget, it can be specified with doors in matt or gloss lacquer in any colour, and in various timbers. Worktops can be specified in stone, stainless steel and other options. Vertical handles highlight the 45° angle of the joint between the worktop and the door. The kitchen’s designers both studied at the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie i

“The kitchen is made of dynamic materials and spontaneous gestures that echo primordial architecture” Artistiche di Urbino in Italy and after a few years working elsewhere founded their award-winning design studio in Umbria, Italy focusing on industrial design, graphic design and architecture. Past clients have included the Indesit Group, Vaselli and Giacomelli. Their work experiments with a variety of materials and pays careful attention to the harmony between natural space and the designed object. They seek to remove the superfluous to find the perfect balance. “The Anima kitchen is made of dynamic materials and spontaneous

gestures that echo primordial architecture,” says Fagioli. The result is an elegant form which is beautifully detailed, made of quality materials and driven by technology. Italian manufacturer Binova began in an artisan workshop in 1958, and is known for its elegant, compact and hitech ‘living kitchens’. The company has collaborated with many prestigious design names over the years. Paolo Bolletta, Binova’s Communications Manager, says: “The company has an area dedicated to research and development and this

has led to a number of successful products. We enhance this by co-operating with notable external designers and architects who may offer new ideas. “Such close collaboration ensures a sophisticated contemporary look that is also ergonomic and functional.” Of the Anima kitchen, he adds: “All Binova models are intended for the high-end market but this one is even more luxurious and will appeal to a person who wants an exclusive product with a unique aesthetic, someone who loves open spaces.” i

THE ART OF

EXTRACTION

Ferran Serra is an industrial designer from Barcelona. He is co-founder of SerraydelaRocha studio which has undertaken wideranging work for a number of companies in various sectors. Throughout his 15 years of design management experience, Serra has put his creative skills to good use on products categories including watches, furniture, lighting, urban products, perfume, kitchen, bathroom, kitchen appliances, transport and more.

Designer Kitchen & Bathroom spoke to him about the ideas that inspire his creative output, and the extractor fan design that gets the best out of one of the kitchen’s most familiar modern materials.

Spanish designer Ferran Serra explains why appreciating form should never mean neglecting function…

DESIGNER K&B: Where do you get your creative inspiration from – other designers, places, buildings, or products? FERRAN SERRA: It's difficult for me to separate inspiration from work. Behind each project there are a lot of hours of thinking, discussing the topic and considering how to provide the best design solution. Accordingly, I find that my inspiration is all around me. It doesn’t switch on and off; rather, I find that my ideas are being influenced and constantly evolving as a result of my observation and analysis of human habits – and indeed, habitats. For me, it is a constant state of absorption; I am never ‘not working’. I believe

inspiration can come from anywhere – from what I am, from my life experiences, my feelings associated with those experiences, my childhood memories and of course, thoughts, values and beliefs. All that is mixed up inside and incredibly comes out in the shape of a new product. DESIGNER K&B: What was the design inspiration behind the Innova collection for Pando and what attracted you to choose Corian as the material for this hood range? SERRA: Simplicity, Elegance and easy cleaning shapes are the values that lead all of the projects we undertake for Pando. But the Innova collection goes further, introducing a well-known material in kitchens that gives us a new timeless

look and a range of great technical properties ideal for these kind of environments – because of the resistance to high temperatures, its easy cleaning surfaces, and wide range of colours. DESIGNER K&B: Hoods have almost become works of art, but isn't it important not to lose sight of the functionality of these appliances? How do you balance creativity with commercial needs? SERRA: This is the real challenge of every project – how to combine aesthetics with the technical and commercial requirements to create an inspiring product with both sense and usability. The fact is that industrial designers are not artists, i

and our work can’t be understood as art. We work together with brands, companies and producers with the goal to achieve real solutions to real everyday problems. The designer must be a professional capable to analyse the markets and find new trends, with great knowledge in materials and processes, some sense of commerce, and a special sensibility for beauty. How to mix all these concepts together is the real work of the designer.

SERRA: We must focus on the essence of the product and send a clean and understandable message to the user. Today, we have a huge saturation of products, functions, information, and technology. In my opinion, new products will have to be simple and timeless. They should avoid any extra, unnecessary functions and as a designer, it is my mission to simply design really useful products.

Art and design are related to beauty, senses, concepts and ideas. But besides this, design must run. If not, you can only value the object as an art exercise.

We need to find an understandable language that communicates the purpose of the product, and critically, we need to keep that purpose in mind – never losing track of it nor allowing ourselves to be led off course.

DESIGNER K&B: How do you see consumer tastes and requirements changing in the near future?

DESIGNER K&B: What opportunities are there for designers to shape the home of the future?

SERRA: Compared to other creative disciplines, design as we know it is very recent but it is incorporated into our lives anywhere and everywhere. Nowadays, any company with a sense of longevity must incorporate design into their core business and that means that designers will have more and more opportunities in the following years. Apart from that, home is the core of our lifestyles and is intrinsically related to our habits and culture. As such, it will always be a key theme for designers to investigate, discuss and interpret. As long as we are committed to this, designers will have the opportunity to anticipate new habits and to propose new and better ways of living. DESIGNER K&B: What other areas of kitchen or bathroom

design interest you? Are there other projects for these markets in the pipeline for you? I loved creating the InNova Collection for Pando – working with such a fluid material to realise the shapes and forms of the extractors was amazing. However, I'm also especially interested in designing taps. Water is one of the essential elements we need to survive and how to control, manage and provide water is a strong and powerful issue, as important as when we discovered how to create and manage fire. A tap is a tool to manage water and that’s the reason why I feel attracted to it. i Pando | www.the-lightworks.com Serra & Delarocha | www.serraydelarocha.com

Elegant Function A practical, multifunctional kitchen space for a family home demanded meticulous planning if it was to also achieve the luxury look that its owner strived for‌

Function, form, and flexibility – all critical requirements for any open-plan space if it is to be truly fit for purpose. In the case of this London kitchen, the elements come together with a subtlety that belies the creativity and attention to detail that went into the design. The house is a four-bedroom semidetached property in Bedford Park, Chiswick, West London – an area that

was the first Garden suburb created by Norman Shaw in the 1870’s. The house was in need of an update when Jon King, founder of commercial design practice Camouflage Projects and its residential interiors sister company Hamilton-King, purchased it. The existing kitchen and bathroom dated back to the 1960s, whilst plumbing and electrics also needed replacing.

Adding the Orangery style kitchen was perhaps one of the most significant changes. The Kitchen sits towards the rear of the house. King created an ‘L’ shaped room and situated the kitchen adjacent to the original dining room. The extension uses the full width of the house to form a single bright and sunny room for use as a dining room/eat-in kitchen and day sitting room.

“After designing the extension, we couldn’t resist designing and building our own kitchen,” explains King. “Our original company was in design and build of retail shops and I had built several projects out of plywood so I liked the idea of a plywood kitchen. It is a material that is honest about its structure rather than something like MDF which is wrapped in plastic. i www.designerkbmag.co.uk

Designer 150.indd 37

22/01/2013 12:22

designerkitchens

“Many furniture designers have in the past made a hero of the layered structure of the material, and I was also attracted to the strong and stable qualities of plywood – especially with having a young family in the house.” In fact, as a result of creating this space in his own home, King formed interior design company HamiltonKing and this is now his main business, focusing on building bespoke kitchens and living spaces. Attention to detail seems to be the key to the success of this particular project. For the low level units, solid core high gloss white laminate was used on the faces of the Plywood panels, and the full height wall is European oak over plywood, although King was keen to ensure that the grain comes through so a satin lacquer was used. He was keen to keep the large full height facades of the wall in wood as a strong contrast to the exposed brick of the adjacent wall. The kitchen is fitted with Siemens appliances throughout, including an American style fridge freezer, oven, microwave, warming drawer and dishwasher. King adds: “The Siemens wide but shallow induction hob also allowed us to create a good double person breakfast bar out of a relatively small peninsular unit.” As with any open-plan kitchen space, the real challenge is maintaining the space whilst also creating clear zones to make it work practically. Seamlessly bringing the kitchen, dining and living functions together is no easy task. “We wanted to create a space to live so that it is the main meeting area of the home – the space that we all gather in when we get home or get up in the morning,” King explains. “It is a room for cooking, eating and relaxing, plus a room that is bright and allows us to enjoy good natural light even through long winters.” “We wanted the space to work as one, although it is incorporating three key tasks plus a garden room. Architectural features – specifically the original wall – divide the space, but the furniture and floor finish encourage

the space to flow and inspire a feeling of space and fresh air.” The layout was carefully thought out too, as much was being demanded of this fairly compact footprint. “Within a relatively small space, we wanted to create a good amount of storage, hence the full height wall,” says King. “The counter area then needed to be able to complete the preparation, cooking and cleaning process. The use of the L-shaped counter was to get as much usable area as possible from the space, this allows for all appliances to be close at hand.” pg

38

As is often the case with a property in a conservation area, the designer was not given a completely free rein – for the extension, planners would not allow a standard orangery demanding ‘a brick-type solid structure’. King says: “I believe the structure we created adds to the integrity of the house rather than looking like an addition. It has the solidity that the planners wanted and we are pleased with the result.”

As for the internal spec, he considers the use of plywood on the drawers to be his favourite feature of the project: “It challenges the standard handless concept, and is always a warm surprise when the drawer is opened – in just the same ways as the funky lining on a smart suit pleases and rewards the wearer!” “As designers, we are always coming up with new ideas. We have now built several kitchens based on this initial concept and that has involved some refinement and improvement to the design. Ultimately though, I believe the mix of materials and the layout for this space is just right and I am sure that it will continue to look this good for a couple of decades.” King believes that the principles behind this project – and the flexibility that the design of the kitchen offers – offer a good springboard for delivering the right end result for his clients. “We are passionate about this concept,” he says. “Good design comes from spending time with the client, gaining a real understanding of how they use their kitchen and living space and what they want the kitchen and living space to add to their experience of each day.” i

ALVAR KITCHEN

Inspired by the great Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, the kitchen design celebrates his elegant ‘form follows function’ aesthetic and is made from a material he pioneered: plywood (thin layers of wood veneer) which is much stronger than solid wood and which has a unique allure of its own. Each kitchen is hand-built by craftsmen in Hamilton-King’s Shropshire factory and then fitted by exactly the same people – giving them ‘ownership’ of their work and ensuring continuity right through to the fit-out. The design was created with maximum flexibility in mind, so that it can be tailored to the customer’s preferences in terms of colours, finishes and bespoke components.

Italian bathroom manufacturer Hidra presented a number of striking products at the Cersaie trade show in Bologna, Italy, recently. Among the highlights was a re-working of its Wire freestanding washbasin. Wire comprises a basin (which can also be used as a countertop basin if preferred) and a separate column made up of a circular array of 18 steel rods which give the optical illusion of meshwork. The design is by Milan-based studio Meneghello Paolelli. Led by Sandro Meneghello and Marco Paolelli, the studio has been prolific since its formation in 2006, designing modern and creative products for a range of manufacturers including Antonio Lupi, Artceram, Bertocci, Fiam, Fima Carlo Frattini, GranTour, and Porcelanosa. During their six years of collaboration, they have received several international awards, including three Red Dot Design Awards.i

Top Class Versatility, durability and a raft of new products on the horizon make the worksurfaces market one for kitchen designers to watch closely

42

pg

Worktops have a very significant influence on the overall appearance of a kitchen and can be used to create a real impact in the contemporary and classic kitchen alike. They also offer the perfect opportunity to incorporate some of the latest design trends into the space – even retrospectively – such as the introduction of curves for a more rounded look and built-up edges which give the illusion of a much thicker profile. Marco Cioffi, Managing Director of Okite UK, says: “Composite worktops are the popular option for the modern family kitchen as they have all the benefits of a natural stone product while being non porous and resistant to staining. “The brilliance, brightness and polish of the surface will not be harmed by the use of everyday detergents, making it the ideal choice for creating a high-end finish in the modern kitchen setting.” He adds that white remains the most popular colour choice for worktops mainly for its timeless appeal and versatile aesthetic. “It is also the perfect colour choice for creating the feeling of space and cleanliness and looks particularly striking when combined

with contemporary materials such as high gloss, glass and stainless steel to fill the space with reflections, accentuated by clean lines.” Acrylic solid surfaces are more desirable than ever as worksurfaces are, to many peoples’ eyes, what set a quality kitchen apart from a budget one. They are seen as aspirational and at an emotional level, are valued for their comparatively sensuous touch. In practical terms, they are low maintenance, easy to clean and recognised as hygienic. Homeowners also know that spending a little more on solid surfaces is an investment because they will not just out-perform laminate but outlast it. Julian Annison, Commercial Director of Sylmar Technology which manufactures Maia solid surfaces, says: “As the solid surface sector has become even more significant in value, it has become segmented with options from installerfriendly products such as Maia through to fully bespoke solutions. The key for designers is to ensure that they understand the options and can deliver their customers’ dream kitchen without excessive cost. i

NEW AND UPCOMING SURFACE OPTIONS Designer 150.indd 43

≈ SYLMAR has just launched two flush fit stainless steel sinks for its Maia range. Designed to be easy to fit into a pre-prepared worktop, this new sink option has a luxurious look and feel yet actually costs less than an under mounted option as there is less labour involved. With the recess already cut into the worktop, all the fitter has to do is apply the sealant and lay the sink into the cut-out. ≈ Initially available to the commercial market, COSENTINO is this year launching Dekton, a new and ultra-compact surface suitable for both interiors and exteriors.

≈ BUSHBOARD has recently launched its M Stone quartz worksurface range, focusing on the top selling trend colours of white, black, cream and brown which collectively account for the bulk of worktop sales currently. M-Stone gives retailers and designers loyal to the Bushboard brand, a quartz range to work with in addition to the laminates and solid surface available. Bushboard claims that M-Stone is the industry’s first quartz that can be cut, shaped and fitted on site in contrast to the template-fabricate-wait-fit route. Shaped

corners, drainer grooves, undermount and Belfast sinks are all possible. ≈ JETSTONE will be introducing two very realistic marble-looking colours in quartz, as well as a series of concrete-looking colours in ceramics. Other ceramic-based new products are also anticipated later this year. ≈ CORIAN will be launching some new sinks and bowls in Q1 of 2013, in line with the market trends towards squarer formats. The brand will also be increasing its colour range for sinks and bowls.

“The worksurface has come a long way from a flat, purely functional product and is now a very real creative force within kitchen design” “Specifiers too have embraced the solid surface. New build is not just highly competitive but prospective purchasers are more demanding of quality than ever before.

“Solid surface blends beautifully and artistically with other materials,” he adds. “It is perfect for islands and flyover breakfast bars and designers can experiment with diverse thicknesses, offering unrivalled creativity.” Increasingly sophisticated colour options are making the worksurface even more effective in helping to achieve the overall look of the kitchen space. Paul McDowell, Managing Director of McD Marketing which represents DuPont Corian and Zodiaq in the UK, says: “Greys and natural stone effects are gaining popularity as a colour choice for worktops and we have added several new chic grey tones to the existing Corian palette. “The newer stone-look-alike colours such as Clamshell and Lava Rock

are increasingly popular, and indeed, are among our top selling colours. Consumers strike a balance between the latest trends in interior design and the practical needs of ease of care and maintenance.

“Woodgrains reference the past while looking forward, and adding a sumptuous looking woodgrain to a contemporary kitchen provides that nod to warmth and nostalgia, but without dating it.”

He adds that the oiling and natural vulnerability of products like wood and granite often means that consumers are choosing the stone ‘mimics’ such as engineered quartz and specific stone colours of Corian.

She adds: “Timber is a noble material which offers craftsmanship appeal and the design flexibility to work successfully in a range of kitchen styles. Zoning with a timber worksurface, for a breakfast bar or preparation area, is very interesting visually while also softening the sometimes clinical look of a contemporary kitchen.”

However, the continued trend for mixing materials in the kitchen means that the choice is as broad as ever, with some materials offering the chance to create a very different look and feel. Rebecca Slinn, Marketing Manager at IDS, says that wood continues to be a prominent choice for the kitchen among consumers and specifiers alike: “Our sales across timber worktops point to a renewed interest in this material over the last two years, from classic oak in the traditional market to exotic timbers such as walnut and iroko at the premium end.

Similarly, ceramic has come a long way in terms of the flexibility and versatility of its use in the kitchen. Remco Jaspers, Marketing Co-ordinator at Jetstone, says: “Our new ceramic worktops are becoming more and more popular, certainly with the high-end studios. Mainly it is their natural look and extremely durable characteristics (since they are stainproof, heat-resistant, and scratchproof), that are being well i

“Worksurfaces are, to many peoples’ eyes, what set a quality kitchen apart from a budget one” received. But also the fact that we can supply worktops in ceramics up to 3500mm in length without a joint proves to be an interesting sales argument.” He adds that because of their lightweight thicknesses of 7mm, ceramics can also be very suitable for backsplashes and co-ordinate with other surfacing materials such as wood, concrete, steel, quartz or granite to create a highly bespoke look. Laura Davie, Marketing Co-ordinator for Cosentino, says that quartz worktops continue to grow in popularity: “Customers appreciate their luxurious appearance, high durability and, more importantly these days, capacity to add real value to a home. One of the trends we are seeing is uniformity, to create a clean and unfussy look.” Cosentino has recently launched a Suede finish for its Silestone surface. The finish was created by the Cosentino research and development team and offers specifiers the option of a textured matte and highly tactile

surface for their customers. It represents further evidence of a really deep-set trend for texture in the kitchen and, says Davie: “It can be combined with other Silestone worksurfaces for a really striking and bespoke look.” Designers and consumers are always looking to add unique character to their kitchen design and the freedom of solid surfacing maximises the potential for success, says Andrew Pickup, Director of Karonia, providers of the Mistral range of solid surfacing. “The benefits are the same as furniture manufacturers offer – more curved and shaped options,” he explains. “This presents no problem for this kind of material as the exact curves and shapes can be replicated in the worksurface simply and easily without the need for special tooling. “Similarly, the trend for interesting and practical split level arrangements is easily achievable with solid surfacing, adding an extra structural dimension to kitchen design.”

Pickup believes that inconspicuous and seamless jointing also greatly increases the potential of the product to meet any design brief. “Just as the consumer is becoming increasingly aware of the creative abilities of acrylic-based materials, specifiers should be well-versed in the benefits these materials offer, not only for the end-user but also in terms of ease of fabrication and installation. Solid surface products allow the designer and consumer to enjoy a tough, hygienic, warm-to-the-touch surface with the appearance and visual impact of natural materials.” The extensive colour range offered by solid surface materials – and the fact that they can be combined to great effect with other materials, such as natural wood – adds to their appeal. Pickup adds: “The worksurface has come a long way from a flat, squareedged, purely functional product and is now a very real creative force within kitchen design.”i

It is advised to tile the walls floor to ceiling – although expensive, this will stop water getting in. If you opt to use porous tiles then they will need resealing regularly. 2 DON’T GET COLD FEET: Not only does underfloor heating make the harshness of the bathroom floor more bearable first thing in the morning but it will also help evaporate excess water, drying the room more efficiently. 3 TRY TILES: It's still a wet room if you use a shower tray that you can tile, either staying flush with the floor or creating a step up. Aesthetically, you could either tile differently to add feature or the same for a seamless floor look. 4 DON’T BE SQUARE: Linear drains are more contemporary than square/round. You can build ones which you slot tiles into so you only see a small amount of stainless steel around the edge. 5 BE PRACTICAL: It’s important to check out what kind of floor you have – specifically, whether it’s joisted or concrete. If it is joisted, check which way the joists run to see the best position to have the waste.

KNOW YOUR STUFF: The key to a well-designed bathroom lies in the systems, fixtures and fittings behind the scenes and this is even more apparent in terms of wet rooms. Retailers need to be knowledgeable in the technicalities such as drainage and tanking. They also need to have total confidence in the solutions they are selling, so that customers themselves have the confidence that a wetroom is the right option for them.

Why a wet room? It's a more luxurious feeling to walk into a shower rather than step onto and into a shower cubicle. The seamless continuation of materials is very pleasing, and the sense of open or cocooning space created is equally enjoyable.

LUXURY APPEAL: Because they have been an aspirational look for so long, wet rooms represent a level of luxury that is very high on the wishlist in the modern bathroom. Wet rooms have many practical advantages too. Not only do they open up the space and make the bathroom feel bigger by removing the obstacle of a shower enclosure, they also make the bathroom and the shower an accessible place for all, eradicating tripping hazards. ANY TIME, ANY PLACE: The beauty of the wet room is that it is a viable option in any situation, even in spaces where it wouldn’t be possible to install a shower enclosure. This means that small spaces and unconventional spaces in the home can be converted into a wet room to give a more flexible option. However, if there is not enough space beneath the floor for the shower drain it may be necessary to use a shower tray.

The construction of a wet room is everything and the tanking is superimportant. We don't suggest wet rooms where there isn't a good sub-floor – any movement can result in leaks. A wet room in a basement with a concrete sub-floor is much safer than one on the first floor of a Victorian house. For a wet room bathroom we like to use a bespoke shower tray in the same material as the floor. The slope to the drain is really important as although it’s called a wet room the idea is not actually that it should be wet all the time. That’s why underfloor heating is something we usually suggest so that the floor dries out quite quickly and we always recommend anti-slip tiles or finish when children will be using the room. An in-line drain near a wall is discreet – especially the ones that allow you to put a tile or stone within it. Royal Mosa have one that is available in certain colours in their range. CeraLine from Dallmer is another good one we have used for natural stone. The water hardness in the UK can really affect stone and tiles, so we suggest softening the water into the bathrooms to avoid limescale build-up over time.

Showpiece Focus MARK WALKER, Sales Director, Bagno Design (www.bagnodesigns.co.uk) Wet rooms offer the perfect way of opening up the bathroom to create a more spacious, luxurious feel and as such, are now an increasingly popular look in bathrooms large and small. Simply by removing the obstacle of a full-on shower enclosure, the look and ‘feel’ of a wet room is achieved, and for those who want to keep a separate dry area too, a frameless glass screen will more than suffice. Of course, one of the key advantages of opening up the space in this way is that the shower brassware is then on show and can become a real focal point of the room if the right pieces are chosen. Designers then have the opportunity to opt for a shower column, or a larger than average showerhead for maximum impact and to create a truly spa-like feel in the domestic setting.

SOLID FOUNDATIONS: By wet room, we refer to rooms where there is no defined shower area. Usually having the floor slightly sloped towards a central waste and without any shower screens, they are fully waterproofed (ʻtankedʼ) and enable even the smallest of spaces to be used for showering. Having the floor on one level, this safety factor makes them particularly suited to less abled or older people. This also creates a very minimal, contemporary look and without any glass to clean, makes them very easy to maintain for busy lifestyles.

pg

WALK THE WALK: Alternatively, the trend for walk-in and walkthrough showers can also adopt the wet floor ideas, and we are finding demand for this approach growing as people become more familiar with this look. The main difference with wet rooms is that they have a glass screen or wall, defining the shower area. However, unlike a shower enclosure with doors to fully contain the shower area, the open end/s prevents it feeling confined or restricted in any way. They are a particularly good solution in family bathrooms as they can create a useful showering area where parents can help younger children wash.

1

3

Although this setup can also use low level shower trays, the advantage of using a wet floor tray allows you the flexibility to cut the tray to any shape or size easily and not be controlled by the manufactured shower tray sizes. They do require more space than the wet room set-up so are not suited for very small spaces. Using a single panel of glass makes the room more open and light, but also easier to clean. You can also be more creative in designing this area. By using an internal stud wall in a walk-in shower, you can create recesses, play with interesting lighting and even drop the ceiling over the shower to recess a ceiling shower head. INDIVIDUAL INSPIRATION: Wet room systems with bespoke made to measure glass can get round sloping walls and give an interesting touch to the room. Ceiling heights still need to be watched in order to ensure good access to the shower and sufficient head height under the shower rose.

The most popular combination of showers in wet rooms is to have some form of fixed rain shower-head and a separate handheld shower for cleaning. Side jets are not usually compatible with open showers as it is more difficult to control the spread of water. We normally advise on the size of the shower head in relation to the showering space.

TILE RIGHT: Creation of a level floor with the floor tiles continuing into the wet room shower area gives a bathroom a greater sense of space and area. Matt tiles are perfect for wet room floors as they are practical and non-slip. Larger tiles will need less grouting as well, meaning there will be less to clean.

Wetrooms are another fantastic way to ensure you maintain as much visual space in the bathroom as possible. They allow you to continue the floor finish throughout the space and remove any raised shower tray structures. Many people also find them extremely practical both when it comes to cleaning the bathroom floors and also for those users who find getting in and out of a high shower tray is becoming increasingly difficult with age.

LEVEL HEADED: Gone are the days that installers would have to tank a wet room area using products that are not purpose made for the application. However, consider your wet room system carefully. We recommend either a tanking system or a tray that can be tiled on to (or both) when installing a wet room. Tanking systems rely on your installer levelling the floor off for drainage, so make sure this is kept in mind while you may have to raise your floor when using ‘Wetdec’ which may ruin the look. A Wetdec tray will have the ‘fall’ built in, so installation should be foolproof. SCREEN WASH: Use a glass screen, with anti-calcium treatment if possible, to define your shower area and to keep water contained in the area, especially if you will be using a large showerhead. A single piece of glass will create a much more free flowing spatial area in the bathroom than you would get with an enclosed shower cubicle. FIT FOR PURPOSE: Check that furniture in your bathroom is suitable for a wet room, as contact with water can damage it over time.

When it comes to installation, because all of the systems will need to go into the floor, it is important to check that you have the cavity space available or are able to create it. Also bear in mind that the waste pipe will need to be incorporated into the floor and run, with a fall, to wherever your main outlet is. If this proves tricky and you have a suspended ceiling or wardrobe units on the floor below then a good tip is to look at running the pipework in this void instead. You should also bear in mind that the area will need to be sealed to provide a barrier against water ingress and that an adequate slope on the floors is provided for to ensure water runs to the waste and not away from it – nowadays there are several manufacturers who produce pre-made boards that can be fitted to the floor before tiling to ensure a suitable angle is provided.

The waste itself can take the form of a small square grill in the corner or you can look to use a channel (or slot) drain that will run across the length of the back wall. These look far more sophisticated, but add significantly to the cost of the system. Whilst wet rooms provide a lot of advantages over traditional shower trays we are finding that increasing they are associated with public spaces such as gyms and swimming pools and that people are instead looking to define their shower zone at home as something different. To accommodate this, we often incorporate shower systems that use a flush fitting sunken shower tray and a complimentary platform cover usually made of slatted teak, Corian or scalloped tile. These types of systems provide all of the advantages of a wet room space but also allow the shower area to be defined within the bathroom and can feel wonderful underfoot.

THE BLUM YOUNG DESIGNERS SHOWCASE New initiative to acknowledge emerging kitchen design talent

Launched last year, the Blum Young Designers Showcase was created to recognise some of the best new designers in the UK kitchen industry. Celebrating innovation and creativity is at the heart of the scheme. Professional kitchen designers with less than three years’ experience in the industry were invited to submit their best projects and show off their work to a wider audience. Two entrants won a day out at the prestigious Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards gala luncheon in November 2012, courtesy of Blum. There, they had the chance to see the cream of the UK kitchen and bathroom design profession receive the industry’s top honours, as well as international design superstar Karim Rashid who attended the event to receive the Simon Taylor Award for Lifetime Achievement. Simon Hughes was one of the Blum Showcase winners. Since March 2012, he and his wife have owned the Intoto showroom in Wokingham, Surrey. Although his wife has several years’ experience in kitchen retail, Simon is new to the sector and so he has had to get to grips with a steep learning curve in order to be able to deliver such accomplished designs to his clients. www.designerkbmag.co.uk

Blum page.indd 58

Laura Knight began her career as a kitchen designer just over two years ago when she joined her mother’s Intoto Kitchen studio in Salisbury. She has used her interest in fashion and design to great effect, developing a set of skills that enable her to see projects through from initial customer brief to completion, including the impressive large open-plan space that earned her a place at last year’s Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards.

Blum – Encouraging The Next Generation Fittings manufacturer Blum has a proud tradition of supporting new talent in the industry. At the company’s Austrian HQ, a wellestablished apprenticeship scheme continues to develop the skills that the company will need in the future. Last year, 65 new apprentices started their technical training at Blum, bringing the total number of apprentices trained in their professions by the company up to 252. The Blum Young Designers Showcase is a further development of this ethos, created to recognise and reward the emerging talent that is shaping the way kitchens are being designed now and in the future.

Mix and Match

Tim Wood, Sales and Marketing Director for British furniture manufacturer Mereway Bathrooms, offers some suggestions on winning combinations for the bathroom

58

Every home now has more cosmetics and cleaning products than ever before, making storage critical for the modern bathroom. At the same time, homeowners are looking to create fabulous, relaxing ‘boutique bathrooms’. Meeting both of these requirements can be a challenge for the designer. Having the ability to mix iconic modular pieces with highly practical ‘fitted runs’ is a fantastic solution, offering designers scope to create a stylish and functional bathroom. Bringing cabinets up off the floor – vanity units in particular – gives a more open feel and when combined with carefully selected mood and task lighting, a large mirror or mirror cabinet completes the look and brings an individual

style and a luxurious feel. Wall-hung modular units are sleek, clean and stylish. Floor standing fitted runs offer the perfect platform for a stunning worktop or integral moulded design that is currently right on trend. No space is wasted as floor standing units are able to fit right into corners and incorporate a range of storage options such as open shelves, drawers and super slim units at just 150mm wide. Modular is hugely popular right now, and fitted is deemed practical, so a mix of the two ticks all the boxes for what consumers are currently looking for. Designers can use a combination of the two options to create a bathroom that has real character and a unique 'wow factor'. i

The jury of the Design Council in Frankfurt was impressed by the quality of design of Blum’s product line. The jury, consisting of representatives of trade and industry, universities and the design world, presents the award every year. When developing Tandembox intivo, Blum’s specialists attached importance to achieving a harmonious balance between drawer side and design element. There is a seamless transition and no gap between drawer side and design element.

Design Classic

Our monthly spotlight on the iconic ideas that have shaped kitchen and bathroom design

Le Mans Kitchen Storage System by Kessebohmer Maximising the use of storage space in the kitchen has been a long-standing challenge over the years, not least how to comfortably access the space in the deepest, darkest recesses of kitchen corner units. Introduced in the UK in 2005 by PWS, the Le Mans storage solution solved the problem of those hard to reach corner units with its simple, yet innovative mechanism. German manufacturer Kessebohmer came up with this clever way of bringing out the shelves from the cupboard with a sequence of perfectly controlled and effortless movements, giving

the user easy access to the entire contents of the cupboard. Complete with anti-slip shelves (in white or grey finish) to prevent items from sliding around when the shelves are pulled in and out of the cupboard, it has a loading capacity of 20kg per shelf. The unit is available to suit 450mm, 500mm and 600mm cabinets for right and left hand applications and a 4-tier arrangement for mid-height cabinets is also available. It is distributed in the UK exclusively by PWS. i PWS | www.pws.co.uk
