Just how striking, that’s your decision.
The difference is Gaggenau. Whether you prefer understatement or a design statement, the ovens 200 series is sure to speak volumes. It looks both elegant and stylish when integrated into a dark wall, while a light-coloured background will ensure it really stands out. In both cases, your kitchen will show your excellent taste, thanks not only to the series’ design but also to the technology inside. Because with the combination of an oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer, even the most ambitious dishes will be a success. Just how ambitious, that’s also your decision. Tomorrow’s Talent
A Devon-based kitchen studio is encouraging potential new designers of the future by running a kitchen design competition in conjunction with a local college. Year 10 students from Kingsbridge Community College have been working to a brief set by The Studio At Palladium. The kitchen had to be practical, designed for a modern living family and the students were given a lesson in kitchen design. The students had 10 weeks to design their kitchen, which included a mood board, with a perspective view and a 3D model with prizes for the top three designs chosen by The Studio team. There is also a prize for the design that gets the most public votes. All the students projects are being displayed in the showroom of The Studio and the public is being invited to vote for their favourite online via The Studio At Palladium’s Facebook page by ‘liking’ their favourite design. Votes can also be cast by emailing The Studio directly at studio@palladium.co.uk The closing date is 8 March 2013.

the big question
Q - How important are trade shows/exhibitions to your business? Pam Haughey, Owner, Toilet Décor, Brisbane, Australia: It seems that everyone I speak to in Australia works through the trade shows but they are so expensive. I have to make a decision this year and I dread spending so much money. I have also had feedback from some of the wholesalers at last year’s shows in Melbourne and I was surprised to find out that a lot of orders placed at the shows are cancelled after the
show. I don't think that's a good way of doing business. Nancy Stern, Elements for Kitchen, Bath and Home, New Jersey, US: I used to attend KBIS every year but two years ago it was so small and featured so much Chinese product that I felt I wasted my money. I did not go last year and will not go this year. Instead, I read the trade journals and research on line for new products. In this
economy, it is hard to stage a good show and difficult to substantiate attendance. Molly McCabe, Owner/Principal Designer, A Kitchen That Works, Washington, US: Trade shows are a big investment for the exhibitors. As an attendee, I really appreciate the opportunity to see new product, speak with manufacturers, network with peers and to attend educational seminars.
Sean Phelan, Director IKDI/BKDA, Ireland: I have to say as an ‘international visitor’ to the UK trade shows, the NEC Birmingham does tick all the boxes. Adjacent to the airport and hotels, it is very convenient, either for a day visit or a short stay. London Excel – which I have visited a few times – for me doesn't have the same feel or convenience.
“We’ve won a lot of awards, but the best award is an order from a customer.” Siegfried Gansslen, CEO, Hansgrohe

Kohler Mira Wins IP Rights Case
A Patents County Court judge has found that Bristan Group copied the design of Kohler Mira’s Azora electric shower with its Glee, Joy and Smile products. On the evidence before him, His Honour Judge Birss QC found the Mira Azora to be “a very significant departure in the field of electric showers when it was launched in 2006”, making “a significant impact in the UK market” and achieving “substantial sales”. Subsequently, it was Kohler Mira’s belief that when the Bristan Glee, Joy and Smile were launched, the products infringed its intellectual property (IP) rights, and it raised its concerns with Bristan in 2011. The judge found that all the similarities which exist between Bristan’s Glee, Joy and Smile products and the Mira Azora product arose “because of copying”. As a consequence of the finding, Bristan is required to pay damages or account to Kohler Mira for its profits in connection with past sales of all three of its infringing products and will pay licence fees going forward. Craig Baker, Kohler Mira’s Marketing Director, said: “We invest significantly in research and development in the UK and it’s unacceptable that our competitors try to acquire the same brand traction as ourselves on the cheap. One of our guiding principles is to live on the leading edge of design and innovation, and it is vital that this is backed with a strong commitment to enforce our intellectual property.” Mira Showers | www.mirashowers.co.uk

25 Years of Bathroom Business Last month marked the 25th anniversary of bathroom retail brand Ripples. Roger and Sandra Kyme opened their showroom in Bath in February 1988 and the business has grown steadily over the years as an upmarket bathroom design and supply franchise network. Having enjoyed a number of years of successful trading, the company took the next step that was to see rapid expansion. Roger Kyme says: “After discussing our plans with the accountant, we looked at franchising as an alternative to owning additional showrooms. This was agreed as the best way forward and in 1996 we opened the first franchise in Bristol.” The Ripples franchise is arguably one of the main bathroom retailing success stories of the last 25 years. Between the showrooms they have managed to secure over 50 industry awards, won by individual designers who have all gone through the Ripples training programme. “Bathrooms have changed dramatically in the last 25 years,” Kyme adds. “When we started, nobody spoke about ‘sanctuary’,
but that’s what our customers were looking for. So we worked with suppliers that understood that the bathroom was more than just a place to wash.
17
pg
“There is no doubt that one of the most important factors in Ripples success has been the support we get from our suppliers. Combine that with the incredible hard work of our franchisees and the dedication of Managing Director Paul Crow and the team at head office, and you have the recipe of Ripples’ success over the last 25 years.” Ripples | www.ripples.ltd.uk

Open
Season Changing lifestyles have brought about a seismic shift in kitchen design thinking over recent years. Effectively integrating different spaces within the home presents a tough and complex challenge to kitchen designers, but thankfully there is no shortage of creative ideas on how to tackle it…
1
A visit to either of the two big kitchen exhibitions of the past year – Eurocucina in Milan in April 2012 and Living Kitchen in Cologne in January this year – would confirm beyond all doubt that one underlying trend seems to be dominating design decisions throughout the industry. Open-plan living has been high on the agenda for the past decade or so, but social changes are driving this on further, elevating it beyond a mere interior design choice and into a lifestyle choice that enables the home to better reflect the way its occupants live. In essence, open-plan kitchens are becoming more popular as people spend more time in the home cooking for friends and family believes Andrew Hall, Managing Director and Chief Designer at Woodstock Furniture. “This space has become multifunctional from enjoying a snack to eat at the breakfast bar to relaxing on the sofa in the living space. Island units and breakfast bars are becoming a staple for the kitchen, whether for additional storage space, to house appliances or act as a seamless divide between the actual kitchen and rest of the space.”
Hall adds that extensions have become part and parcel of many bespoke kitchen schemes, as the opportunities for opening out areas in your home are endless. Joe Cavani, Founder of Edwin Loxley, adds: “We have noticed that kitchen spaces are getting bigger and bigger as the move towards an open plan, family room develops along with the need to fulfil many socialising and family functions besides that of cooking. “Our ‘transitional’ look of combining traditional and contemporary design has never been so popular along with a subtle blend of natural wood and painted finishes, usually painted with either oak or walnut accent pieces.” Jez Thompson, Showroom Design Manager at Mark David, notes that the preference for open-plan living has changed the way clients approach the project from the outset: “Kitchens are now the hub of the house, so if the clients have the potential to create a large open space, then that is where we can help from an earlier stage in the process. i

“More and more clients are making appointments with us before they approach architects, to investigate the possibilities of their dream kitchen.” Neil Wright, Senior Design Consultant at Chalon Knutsford says: “I have found that almost all my clients who are building or extending are going down the open-plan route. The open, family-friendly rooms we can create are very popular, allowing the cook to interact with guests rather than being hidden away in a separate room. “The consideration for other items such as dining tables, casual seating, wood burners and televisions all affect the design starting point. Previously, the majority of kitchen designs started with the cooker, the natural heart of the kitchen. Whilst this is still a crucial element, it is no longer always the beginning.” “The overarching driver of our own design trends is the requirement for open-plan kitchens,” says Matt Phillips, Head of UK Sales at Rotpunkt. “Consumers have been extending their homes or taking out walls between two rooms to achieve this. Now, they are opening up that space still further by linking it to a conservatory or orangery for a light, bright living environment that expands and varies the criteria for furniture.” Consumer awareness of different kitchen trends has seen a significant shift in their aesthetic as well as functionality expectations. Warnock Watson, Managing Director, Bellissimo Furniture, explains: “Three years ago, handleless kitchens were still quite rare, but consumer awareness is now very widespread. For us this means what was a niche product has become a mainstay. Handleless curves in particular can be very striking. “Many now see the kitchen cabinetry as a blank canvass for eye-catching appliances, feature walls, units and surfaces. To keep it really contemporary, designers should look seriously at matt colours and subtle colour combinations. They should also consider full-height doors, as a wall of handleless floor-to-ceiling cabinets concealing anything from
larder storage to built-in appliances is a strong feature which works with woodgrain, solid colours or a combination. They also combine superbly with floating units along another wall.”
Ergonomics
Of course, hand-in-hand with an open-plan kitchen/living space goes the issue of usability. If the space is to work effectively and flow freely for its users, it needs to match their specific requirements. Adrian Stoneham, Managing Director of Stoneham Kitchens, says: “As the kitchen becomes a hub – not only for cooking, but gathering, eating and entertaining – ergonomics will play an increasingly important role. Even the smallest areas will be turned into zones of activity, as designs are optimised to deliver an efficient, flexible and organised space. “From efficient soft closing kitchen doors and drawers, to waste segmentation units, and pull out corner units, clever storage solutions are of great importance.”

Materials
Material diversity is giving designers a whole range of new options for delivering projects with a real sense of individuality. Michael Gianquitto, Sales and Marketing Director at Lida Cucina, says: “The hottest new trend in terms of kitchen furniture is thermo kilned wood. Wood is super heat treated, which gives a greater depth of colour and also naturally seals the wood.” He adds that structured matt, sheen finishes and texture generally are still the trend for high end kitchens as well as more luxurious materials such as black ebony wood combined with crocodile effect leather as seen as in the Nightfly collection by Rossetto. “This range blurs boundaries as it extends from the kitchen into the dining and living rooms and even the bedroom.” These are undoubtedly interesting times for kitchens. With everyone’s eyes on the tough economic situation, manufacturers are using technologically advanced materials to provide high performance at affordable prices. This opens new avenues for creativity in design and set exciting new trends. i

Keith Atkins, Director of Design at DesignSpaceLondon, points to the example of Modulnova’s new Twenty Cemento kitchen which is inspired by new resin technology which allows the cabinets to be wrapped in a 3mm liquid cement coating. Drying to a silky smooth surface, it is cool to the touch but visually warm in its natural stone tones. Kerlite is another new material that Modulnova is working with. Heatproof, acid-proof and mechanically strong, this non-porous porcelain can be used as thin as 3mm, allowing it to be used to clad worksurfaces, doorfronts, splashbacks and walls. Atkins says: “These and the many other man-made materials now trending in leading-edge kitchens come in a dazzling spectrum of colours, textures and finishes, including incredibly realistic stone and wood grain finishes as well as contemporary colours in gloss and satin finishes.” Whilst generally speaking, natural materials may well remain key right now, they are often being specified in combination with manmade options. Chalon’s Wright says: “We use natural materials such as granite and timber worksurfaces almost all of the time. There is a noticable trend towards engineered products such as Quartz, which give a feel and touch of granite but are much more consistant in their patterns and
11
colours and also easier to live with than some (especially pale) granites. “Timbers such as Maple, Oak and Walnut are a popular choice on our Worktables; a Chalon signature piece. This gives a warm tactile feel to the centre piece, softening the look of the kitchen.” Woodstock Furniture’s Hall agrees that natural wood will remain in big demand in the luxury kitchen market this year but that rich textures and hand-painted finishes will become increasingly present on homeowners’ wish lists. “Two-tone design is one of the latest trends to have hit the kitchen catwalk too, and this style originates from creating the chance to determine specific zones in the hub of the home with colour and materials. “This season’s latest shades are fresh and earthy with distinctive wood grains an apparent feature and a whole spectrum of hand-painted colours are taking the lead, from plum shades to sage green hues in the luxury, bespoke kitchen furniture market.” Rotpunkt’s Phillips: “A single colour in one material can look clinical and boring in a large space. We are seeing much more mixing of door colours and finishes. The two-tone concept breaks up the space, defines the working kitchen and living areas and at the same time, creates an integrated design for the whole room. One in three Rotpunkt kitchens now incorporates more than one colour and texture.” i

Simon Collyns
Marketing Director, Symphony: “Product hot spots continue to be both gloss and matt finishes in the latest on trend colours. In particular, stones, ivory and white, mixed with the furniture will help to create the 'wow' factor. Drawers are a great example of this and we have launched a variety of styles of deep drawers and extra-width drawer options. With the wide range of drawer accessories now available everything from plates to pasta can be stored in an easily accessible space, providing a great design, as well as being practical for storage.”

Phillips says that the brand has looked to offer designers more choice – particularly in terms of warm, neutral tones – and has introduced 15 new colours and two new finishes of Extra Matt and Extra Gloss. Currently, the most popular Rotpunkt colour combination is Urban or Grey Wild Oak matt teamed with Magnolia or Stone high gloss, with new addition Kashmir also coming through strongly. “Although the natural, broadly neutral look prevails, another trend beginning to emerge is for the use of bold, quite vivid splashes of fruit colours, like the new Rotpunkt Berry Red, combined with a warm Oak for example.” Simon Collyns, Marketing Director at Symphony, feels that an earthy tone will continue to dominate: “For both traditional and classic kitchens, earthy neutral colours will set the trend for kitchens, alongside the ivory stone, taupe and mussel colours, which have proven popular throughout last year. Looking ahead though, we will also see the trend for different shades of grey. In particular, paler dove through to more striking anthracite tones will be on trend, and will provide a stunning appearance in both gloss and matt finishes.” Keep it simple and allow strong features to shine through, is the advice of Krieder designer Chris Etheridge. “Various shades of grey are going to be a background theme www.designerkbmag.co.uk
Designer Furniture 151.indd 24
for this year, with light oak for the floor, all to provide a neutral canvas for the striking use of marble for the worktops and other stand-out surfaces,” says Etheridge. “We believe straight lines and minimalism work best in a kitchen, but there is nothing wrong with a bit of drama on the side and this is something we shall be developing this year.” An accomplished approach to blending colours and materials is what will be setting good designers apart from the rest in the future. “We will see a growing trend for natural materials, personalised with gloss, satin or textured finish surfaces including a hint of colour,” predicts Adrian Stoneham. “People still like the traditional quality materials, such as oak, walnut and maple, but adding a splash of colour adds warmth to the space, sharpens any special design features and makes it more interesting than monochromatic schemes. “There are lots of ways colour can be incorporated into a kitchen, from work surfaces, to bright island panels, to colour drawer inserts; but something we are seeing more and more demand lately for is our bespoke furniture painting service. Using a spectrometer we can match the colour of furniture to anything, fabric, wallpaper, whatever the customer desires. This can be a smooth painted effect or an enhanced/ brushed grain to reveal the natural timber beneath the painted surface.”i
Managing Director, Bellissimo Furniture: “White high gloss remains the market leader for finishes, but matt is coming through strongly, and the variety of colours is broadening. The main emerging finish is matt in natural tones such as stone, mocha, lava, cream and so on. Stronger colours, such as plum and pistachio, will also play a part, but the colour mood is fairly sober at the moment with bold splashes just for feature doors or cabinets.”
Chris Etheridge
Designer, Krieder: “For appliances, we will be specifying touch-screen, intuitive technology, complemented by app-controlled lighting and sound systems. From a design point of view, we love Bora’s cooktop extractor which does away with the hood by drawing vapours into a channel at the side of the hob. That’s real progress for lovers of uncluttered space.”
Matt Phillips
Head of UK Sales, Rotpunkt: “Handleless design is very strong now, so much so that we now offer four styles of handleless kitchens with 34 different handrail options. We are also seeing an increase in the use of open shelving in kitchen designs.”
Jez Thompson
Showroom Design Manager at Mark David: “Clients desires seem more fixed on a Germanic, modern, sleek, minimalistic look with user friendly technology inside the furniture for ease of use. The popular colours are still white, magnolia and grey together with a contrasting warm wood affect panel system to encase the units. Quartz work surfaces are still on the wish list of all clients, although there is more. This is possibly due to cost saving as well as laminate being more trendy and pleasing on the eye in certain designs.”
Graham Jones
Sales and Marketing Director, Mereway Kitchens: “This year’s kitchens are embracing the continued trend for combined spaces for living, dining and cooking. Combinations of carefully selected lighting options, glass fronted cabinets and small ‘blocks’ of woodgrains or splashes of painted colours bring an individuality that consumers are seeking whilst achieving the perfect living kitchen space. Favoured designs this year will still be for the more minimalist look incorporating handleless units and smooth curves that soften open plan spaces. However, designs are evolving into floating units, open shelving and with more ‘living’ type furniture becoming the norm.”

Modern Classics Tom Howley explains why quality and craftsmanship are at the heart of his bespoke kitchen designs
26
pg
Kitchen designer Tom Howley has recently opened a new showroom in Wigmore Street, adding to his company’s existing locations in Brentwood, Altrincham, Alderley Edge and Esher. He has built a reputation for successfully blending classical design styles with a fresh, modern feel. Most of all, his projects are all characterised by high level craftsmanship that brings the very best out of the materials used. We spoke to him about the trends that are shaping kitchen design right now, and how patience can sometimes be the key to delivering the project that a customer has always dreamed of. DESIGNER: What made you choose a career in design? TOM HOWLEY: Starting out as a cabinet maker, it was a natural progression to move into design. Whilst working as part of a small company, design was an integral part of the craftsman’s role. A love of furniture design and an understanding of how to craft beautiful furniture went hand in hand. DESIGNER: How would you describe your design style? HOWLEY: My designs are simple, balanced and symmetrical with a
classical English feel. They are styles that will endure for many years and become an integral part of the character of the home.
DESIGNER: What trends do you see as having the biggest impact on kitchen design right now – and which of these do you think are here to stay? HOWLEY: A fresh new look is emerging for spring, moving away from the neutral earthy tones to cool painted finishes such as greys with contrasting rich dark oak interiors for the cabinets. As far as appliances are concerned, there is a growing demand for steam ovens, reducing the need for a conventional hob. Clients are seeing the benefits of using steam for all types of meals as it cooks food to perfection and is a much healthier way of cooking. DESIGNER: Who – or what – inspires you? HOWLEY: I’m inspired by architecture, especially in central London. I love cities and the beauty and detail of the architecture inspires my designs. I think all designers can be inspired by other people’s designs too – there are many British designers in the interiors world whose work inspires me. i

“A fresh new look is emerging for spring, moving away from the neutral earthy tones to cool painted finishes such as greys with contrasting rich dark oak interiors for the cabinets” DESIGNER: What has been your favourite project so far and why? HOWLEY: One of my favourite projects was a small kitchen in Cheshire where the client was extremely nervous and emotional about investing in a new kitchen. The design was fairly simple and I knew exactly how it should look from the first meeting. However, the client needed so much reassurance and was worried to the point of being in tears, that I thought it would never happen. After months and months and almost walking away from the project, the lady ordered her kitchen and as I’d reassured her throughout, the installation went perfectly and she was left with a beautiful Tom Howley kitchen. She was so elated with the kitchen, she absolutely loved it and more importantly the journey, how we helped her through the process. For me, it’s all about the customer experience and delivering so that they enjoy buying their kitchen as well as the excitement they get from the finished result. I still see the lady and she always comes up and hugs me and tells me how much she loves her kitchen! DESIGNER: What has been your toughest design challenge? HOWLEY: There are key elements that need to be included in most kitchen designs and to be honest
there are not many spaces I’ve come across that have given me major issues incorporating them. It tends to be challenges such as support beams that mean you have to compromise on certain areas of the design. They dictate the working space you have and the position of cabinets and appliances.
28
pg
DESIGNER: What product(s) do you most enjoy specifying/working with? HOWLEY: I love to incorporate Sub Zero and Wolf appliances into my designs and the Miele steam oven is also very popular. DESIGNER: What’s the most important rule of design? HOWLEY: I believe a design must have symmetry and balance. Of course this must be coupled with practicality! DESIGNER: What is your ultimate long-term ambition/aim for your business? HOWLEY: I would of course like to see the Tom Howley brand and business grow over time but more importantly, I want to deliver consistently high standards throughout the business, ensuring every Tom Howley kitchen is designed, manufactured and fitted to perfection. 100% Customer satisfaction will result in customer recommendations and a brand that people love and trust.i

Working Beauty The Isola Cross kitchen from Elmar is intended to marry aesthetic quality with practical cooking space – and there’s no-one more likely to pull that off than Ludovica and Roberto Palomba?
Italian designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba have a distinguished track record for kitchen and bathroom products that exude that sense of style that we often stereotypically associate with Italy.
30 pg
Whilst they have been more prolific in terms of bathroom products, their pedigree in kitchen design is equally impressive. This creation for Elmar for example, is the latest product of a longstanding relationship they have had with the Italian kitchen manufacturer since 2007. They have designed the Slim, Playground, Radical and EL_01 ranges for the brand, but with Isola Cross, the focus this time was more on the openplan approach that has become so widely accepted… and indeed expected. “Our primary intent was to create an innovative island system,” they explain, “defined by a trestle-shaped base more usually found under a bench – to emphasise the idea of the chef as a kind of artisan.” “For us, the kitchen remains a room to work in. Isola Cross is the core of a new way of living, made of fluid spaces without any boundaries.”
Custom-made, the Isola Cross has a steel worksurface which is available in various sizes, complete with an integrated hob and sink. It has been designed to be compatible with many other household appliances so the user can make their own choice at time of purchase. It is perfectly in line with the Palomba’s ethos of creating products that fit seamlessly into their user’s lifestyle. “Our goal is to achieve the desires of the people. Our projects are based on the analysis of behavioural changes. We design products to be shared with those who choose them. “Today, kitchens are almost tailor-made to the customers’ tastes. We wanted to bring elegance and sophistication to the kitchen.”i Elmar | www.elmarcucine.com Laurence Pidgeon | www.laurencepidgeon.com Palomba + Serafini | www.palombaserafini.com

Rock Solid A new furniture range from Charlie Smallbone promises a fusion of quality and luxury in its highly unusual designs
Rock & Bone is the new kitchen and furniture brand from Charlie Smallbone, founder of Smallbone of Devizes and Damian Lawrance, founder and owner of the La Rock specialist joinery workshop in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. Smallbone’s design vision, originating from 30 years in the kitchen and furniture industry, fused with the workmanship of Lawrance’s artisan craftsmen, has resulted in a range of new furniture designs that certainly grab the attention. Rock & Bone launched its new signature collection on a stand at Maison et Objet in Paris recently. The stand, co-hosted by kitchen appliance brand Sub-Zero & Wolf, featured six original pieces of furniture and Rock & Bone’s newly designed Lateral kitchen collection. Each piece has been handmade in Rock & Bone’s Nidd Valley workshop in Yorkshire. Smallbone says that the boutique collection does away with the idea of boxy kitchen cabinets in favour of specially designed and built pieces, finished in unique finishes, including metallised lacquers. Fully bespoke, customers can choose from a wide range of customisable options, including metallised finishes, 1950’s-inspired ‘car’ colours and bespoke handles. i

charlie says… Charlie Smallbone on the creation of the new Rock & Bone brand:
The Big Idea:
34
“The new designs had to be totally original, as original as I could conceive them in a kitchen lifestyle context. I wanted to work with curves and I wanted to define and create pieces with absolute functionality and beauty. Once I had defined my new system, I wanted to focus on defining each piece as well as I could. This has led me to study larger elements such as kitchen islands within the context of pieces, though these are of course more complex than sideboards and tables. I wanted to consider the multifunctional elements of islands and to try to translate my conclusions to achieve a completeness within my designs – to bring as much aesthetic order to each piece as I could, as well as making sure they do what they are originated to do.”
pg
Rock & Bone | www.rockandbone.co.uk
Form and Function:
“To me the devil is in the detail. My background has taught me to try to define what I am setting out to achieve as completely as I can, so once I am happy that I know what it is I am working to
create, then I apply these parameters that I have defined to my sketching process, and continue via the creation of 3D CAD models until I am happy that what I am looking at doesn’t just look attractive, but also that I have assimilated the space in a way that will execute the requisite functions.”
Future Thinking:
“Rock and Bone is specifically about originality of design and the beauty of the creation of complex forms. Each of our pieces are made within a workshop environment, as this is where we attain accuracy of execution. So we are very busy progressing new pieces and concepts. We are adamant that Rock and Bone has to stand apart from other companies through the originality and complexity of our designs, our artisan craftsman method, the beauty and uniqueness of our finishes, and the fact that all our designs are tailor-made for each project. We’re less interested in defining our efforts as the creation of new ranges.” i

The re-emergence of Cologne as a major European kitchen exhibition continued with the 2nd edition of Living Kitchen, and the signs are of an industry that is evolving in some exciting ways…
When visiting the Cologne exhibition centre for Living Kitchen, it’s strange to think that the show is only in its second outing. It has a bustling sense of importance that you would not necessarily expect of a fledgling event. In reality of course, its roots go back a lot further than 2011. The Cologne Furniture Fair was once the big hitter of European kitchen exhibitions before Eurocucina took the crown. On this evidence however, there’s a suggestion that a number of the industry’s big manufacturers – those from Germany at least – see this as their most important show over and above anything that takes place around 400 miles away in Milan. Over an area of 42,000 sq m, 185 exhibitors from 22 countries presented their latest ideas and innovations to around 142,000 visitors. But it’s not just about the scale of the show – what was most noticeable was that despite the lack of clear ‘headline-grabbing’ innovations, there were some strong design messages coming through. Firstly, the materials mix remains at the top of the agenda. Kitchen manufacturers continue to develop the multitude of ways in which their collections can incorporate a range of contrasting materials, with texture being the most significant element. Combining smooth glossy surfaces with rough-hewn wooden sections is no simple task, but done well, it can bring
the kitchen space to life, and there was plenty to suggest that this is moving on to the next stage of sophistication. Secondly, the emphasis on open-plan clearly shows no sign of going away anytime soon. This presents itself in two clear ways. There is the ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ approach to hiding the kitchen away (see our feature on Warendorf’s Hidden Kitchen in last month’s Designer Kitchen & Bathroom), which a number of manufacturers presented in varying ways. But there is also the slightly more subtle trend of incorporating shelving and open sections into the kitchen furniture, often using colour accents or contrasting materials to add an extra level of interest and focus to the aesthetic. Finally, ergonomics featured more strongly than might have been the case in recent times. In particular, there were a number of new kitchens that incorporated adjustable-height island units which can be easily raised or lowered to suit the user’s specific requirements. Not only does this reflect the multi-user nature of today’s kitchens, but it also allows this space to be more versatile – in the raised position for preparing food or cooking, or lowered to enable it to be used as an informal dining space. Appliances featured highly too, with a number of high-profile launches from some of the big players including Gaggenau, Miele, Neff, and Sub-Zero. i

LEFT An update of Alfredo Häberli’s Mesa kitchen design was presented by Schiffini. Meaning ‘table’ in Spanish, Mesa is based around a large table with benches and is designed to exude both functionality and warmth. Flexibility is key, with practical and capacious tall units forming the core of the kitchen, and a real mix of materials and asymmetric lines adding to what Häberli refers to as the “vital mess” of a real kitchen, but a mess in which every utensil, appliance and accessory has its place. Cooking Concepts Developing ideas was the theme for Schüller’s presence at Living Kitchen – and it offered plenty of food for thought…
A host of new kitchen concepts were presented by Schüller on its eyecatching stand at Living Kitchen in Cologne in January. Sharing ideas and drawing feedback from visitors was the primary aim. The NX501 was presented with curved base units and a high gloss lacquer, aligned with natural wood sections. This contrast between high gloss and nature was in evidence all around the Living Kitchen exhibition but this was a good example of how each component can complement the other.
Also on show was a NX Ceramic concept, featuring a distinctive island cooking table with wooden legs, whilst the wall units boast large ceramic fronts with a unique surface in graphite. The extension by the shelf wall and dining table demonstrates how the design can be utilised to bring the kitchen and living area together neatly. The new kitchens were presented on what was one of the busiest stands at the show. Its quirky design was intended to represent
the market place as a venue for conversation, interpreted through the use of high columns of stacked palettes for a busy market feel. In the heart of the stand was a kiosk serving food and drink which also acted as a dividing line between the two Schüller collections, the premium Next125 and the mid-range Schüller.C Collection.i Schüller | www.schueller.de InHouse | www.inhouseuk.net

New Generation
Appliance giant Miele went big at Living Kitchen – dazzling visitors with over 200 appliances including a whole new design approach to its range…
Miele has launched its new Generation 6000 appliances, including two new design lines created to suit different kitchen spaces. The PureLine range has a reduced design, available in four colours and intended to lend itself primarily to open-plan kitchens where it can blend in well with the lines of the kitchen furniture. For a more conventional kitchen environment, the ContourLine products have a larger proportion of stainless steel and visual definition to make more of a visual statement.
It’s rare though, for an appliance brand to place such emphasis on offering two contrasting aesthetic options. Andreas Enslin, Chief Designer at Miele, says that this approach was vital: “The world is constantly changing and, with it, the habits and needs of our customers. We monitor such changes closely and consider the implications it may have on our future products.” He explains that some very clear trends emerged. Firstly, high end open-plan kitchens as part of a move towards
a merging of the kitchen with living and dining areas typically encountered in new homes, whereas older properties tend to have separate kitchens and dining areas. “Secondly, we noticed a growing demand among consumers for a reduction in complexity as a reaction to what is seen as information overload and stimulus saturation.” Thirdly, he says that early in the design process for the

DUAL FORMAT Generation 6000 range, his team realised that the success of smartphones with their touch controls would impact the way domestic appliances are operated. As a result, they have developed the M Touch controls. M Touch is based on a high-resolution TFT display with which the menu can be browsed by swiping or scrolling with the tip of the finger. Functions and options appear in clear black letters on a white background.
The colour range was attracting much of the attention at the launch of the new products however. Alongside existing options for stainless steel and white, Miele have introduced Obsidian black and Havana brown to its range of choices, the latter specifically to offer an option that will enable it to work well in combination with warm, natural tones and veneers in the kitchen.i Miele | www.miele.co.uk
Andreas Enslin, Chief Designer for Miele, on the brand’s two new design lines… “PureLine is low-key and minimalistic. It lends itself to contemporary, modern kitchen styles on account of its smooth and coloured surfaces and its spacious appeal. It is always going to be the range of choice when it is a matter of integrating appliances into the cabinetry of open-plan kitchens. ContourLine on the other hand, has a more technical appeal underlined by greater wealth of detail as expressed by the stainless-steel frame. The integrated handle is milled from a single block of solid metal which gives it that feel of something special. Both lines have their own clear design and combine perfectly with all other appliances from within the same line.”

Material Masterclass There were few better examples at the Living Kitchen exhibition of how to mix materials to maximum effect than Eggersmann. Here, pure and simple styling belies the attention to detail that has gone into the brand’s latest designs…
Sleek and minimal has always been the hallmark of German kitchen manufacturer Eggersmann. Several monolithic creations were presented on its impressive stand at Living Kitchen in Cologne this year, all part of its new E 3.0 system. With a new body height
of 810mm based on a grid system of 81mm high sections, the new offering features a lot of storage space and, combined with a low base starting at 70mm, it also has a homogeneous and smooth form. The technical aspects of the system were
brought to life in a number of ‘flavours’ at the exhibition. Among the highlights were vintage oak fronts which beautifully contrasted the simple, no-nonsense structural design. Michael Wunram, Managing Director at Eggersmann, said: “It is a way of maintaining the minimalist style but
combining it with more natural surfaces.” Vintage marble also featured heavily as the core material of a luxurious island in another kitchen set, dramatically set alongside a wall unit fronted with burnished copper which gave a rich, eye-catching effect.i

Neff introduced a number of new products to its range, including the FreeInduction hob which it says takes induction technology one step further. Chefs have the entire ceramic glass surface at their disposal without any restriction on cooking zones. Precision controls under the glass allow the user to position pans of any shape and size any way they want on the hob and control them individually. Whilst still a niche product, the latest teppan-yakis offer a quick and convenient way of cooking healthy, low fat food

The teppan-yaki plate is a fixture of most oriental restaurants these days, and you might be forgiven for imagining that it’s an ancient and honourable Japanese tradition. But truth, in this case, is far stranger than fiction. Katarzyna Cwiertka, Japanese culinary expert and author of Modern Japanese Cuisine: Food, Power and National Identity, explains that it was actually the US occupation of Japan after World War 2 which transformed the traditional hot plate used for cooking wheatmeal pancakes with vegetables into the teppan-yaki we know and love today. An enterprising restaurant owner in Kobe noticed that the US troops were
distinctly unimpressed with the floury pancakes, so he experimented with cooking the odd piece of black market beef or prawns on his griddle. It was a big hit, and similar restaurants began to spring up around the country – although they were regarded with suspicion as something rather exotic and Western by the locals. Teppan-yaki took off internationally when Japanese chef Aoki Hiroaki moved to New York in 1959 and opened a restaurant in Manhattan. “He constructed the restaurant in the style of a rustic Japanese tavern,” explains Cwiertka, “giving guests the impression that the cuisine was one of the treasures of a centuries-old Japanese tradition.”
Traditional it may not be but the teppan-yaki is most certainly a versatile and practical addition to the modern kitchen. “Teppan-yakis are not a big volume seller,” admits Danny Lay, Sales Director at Caple, “but they tend to be bought by younger people who are experimental in their cooking and really enthusiastic about food.” Nicky Gibbons, Manager of the Experience Centre at Miele agrees, “It’s a very exciting product, but it’s not very well known on the market yet. If someone is a real foodie and enjoys that style of restaurant they will want to buy one.” i pg

“It is really healthy because you only wipe oil onto the surface, you don’t need to pour it on” Cooking options
Perhaps part of the reason they are still a niche product is that many potential buyers simply don’t realise that they can do a lot more than just stir fry on it. “People need to look beyond oriental food,” says Lay. “Once you have one and have settled down with it, then you will find you use it regularly.” “It’s very good for doing your sausage and bacon and fried eggs on a Sunday morning, and for cooking pancakes and drop scones,” adds Miele’s Gibbons, who also suspects that appliance buyers may be unaware
of the potential health benefits of this kind of cooking. “In layman’s terms it’s just a very big, hot frying pan, but it is really healthy because you only wipe oil onto the surface, you don’t need to pour it on.”
50
When choosing a teppan-yaki, Gibbons recommends looking a model with different zones that can be set to varied temperatures. “Sometimes you need a really high heat to seal the food and then low heat so it can carry on cooking, so it’s easiest if you can just move it from one area to the other,” she says.

Cooking is controlled using the gas burners, meaning that two zones of different temperatures can be created. Bertazzoni | www.glotech.co.uk
“Many potential buyers simply don’t realise that they can do a lot more than just stir fry on it” Some models also come with a large lid that can be placed over the top so that food can be quickly seared and then finish cooking by steaming gently. A wide range of temperatures is also useful, says Lay, “It’s a flexible piece of equipment. Ours has nine power levels so you can turn it right down and just use it to keep food warm.”
Cleaning
51 pg
It’s worth considering the aftercare of a teppan-yaki before making a choice. Most plates have an electrical element running through them, or have an induction generator underneath
to heat the hotplate like a pan, so they can’t usually be put into the sink or dishwasher. Only some removable plates that can be put on top of a gas hob can easily be scrubbed in hot water. Instead, the surface has to be cleaned by pouring a small amount of cold water, or putting ice cubes on it, while it is hot, loosening food residue. Then it will need wiping with a damp cloth, and any gullies wiping free from fat. Ensuring that the plate is always piping hot before putting any fresh food on it will help to ensure that any bacteria present cause no harm. i www.designerkbmag.co.uk

(9) The Bertazzoni stainless steel teppan-yaki comes as part of a segmented three-part hob also featuring a single large gas burner and twin-ring induction hob. It has two cooking zones with completely variable heat controls and its top plate lifts off so it can be cleaned in the sink. Its stainless steel knobs with light ring can be incorporated into either the kitchen furniture or the worktop and it features a detachable tray for easy removal of oil and waste. Atag | www.atag.co.uk (11) Miele’s CT 400 P Tepan is a circular stainless steel model, ideal for putting on an island as a feature for dinner parties. The centre dips by 18mm when heated to contain sauces and cooking juices whilst the outer area is naturally cooler so food can be moved around to allow for faster or slower cooking. Miele | www.miele.co.uk (12) AEG’s Crystalline HC452600EB uses reverse induction technology so food can be cooked on the surface while other areas stay cool. It features one cooking zone with 15 power levels, touch sensitive slide controls and an intelligent timer that switches off the hob to finish cooking with residual heat. AEG | www.aeg.co.uk
“There’s something satisfyingly basic and raw about cooking on something that resembles a hot stone” “If you don’t want it to look scratched, use non-scratch utensils like high temperature Teflon implements rather than the traditional steel,” warns Gibbons, although she points out that once steel has lost its initial shine it cleans up easily and doesn’t deteriorate further. It may also discolour, so some buyers may prefer to look for a model with a removable or hinged lid to keep the kitchen looking pristine.
Finally, Lay warns that good extraction – either at a high level above the stove or a downdraft next to it – is important to maintain a healthy kitchen environment. “You need good extraction as you create more smoke by cooking directly onto a hot surface,” he says. “But there’s something satisfyingly basic and raw about cooking on something like a hot stone. It’s a simple product, but it can be very effective, and a fun and interesting way of cooking.” i

Creative Vision The big biennial show for bathrooms opens its doors again this month as the industry gathers in Frankfurt for ISH 2013
pg
54 With over 2,300 exhibitors, ISH can lay claim to being the biggest bathroom show in Europe, but its appeal is generally more about ideas than numbers. Whilst the kitchen sector has Eurocucina (and now Living Kitchen) as the shows for which new launches and prototypes are saved up for, many bathroom manufacturers look to ISH as the place to showcase their latest developments. But as well as all the new products on show, there is also a host of exhibition features that look to address a range of broad issues that shape the bathroom industry. Among the special features this time is the ‘barrier-free bathroom’ which will explore the increasing importance of
demographic change. With the ‘Age Explorer’ – a special suit that simulates the effects of aging on physical capabilities – visitors will be able to experience for themselves what it is like to be much older. This will be aligned with a cross-generation bathroom comfort competition, an award intended to highlight innovative bathroom products that combine barrier-free building with comfort and safety. Elsewhere, the ‘wall + floor’ special show will bring the assortment of innovative products and furnishing concepts for floors and walls to ISH for the first time. Part of the ‘wall + floor’ section will be a central meeting place focusing on creative subjects, such as
bathroom interiors, holistic bathroom planning, design and bathroom trends. There will be over 30 workshops and lectures based around the subject of holistic bathroom planning, as well as a presentation of bathroom trends for 2013/14. In truth, much of the total exhibition floorspace across the sprawling MesseFrankfurt is taken up with the sort of technical HVAC and installerfocussed products that can sometimes create the wrong kind of dynamic for more designconscious visitors. However, with several massive halls dedicated solely to sanitaryware and bathroom furniture product, there is always enough creative innovation on show at ISH to make it a must-visit for anyone involved with bathroom design.i

Aimed primarily at architects and developers, the 4,000 sq ft showroom features 21 unusual room sets showing what can be achieved with a sauna, steam room or wet room. Founded in 2001 by Barry Smith and Kicki Carlsson-Boyd, Drรถm UK designs and supplies for each project on an individual tailor-made basis. Among the brands on offer are Tylo saunas, Gessi brassware and an impressive selection of Bisazza mosaic tiles. Among the highlights at the showroom are the Notte Sauna which uses dark Thermo Aspen tongue and groove wood panels for both the walls and ceiling, with contrasting lighter luxury Thermo Aspen Benches. The Fiore Rosa Steam Room is also a stand-out room set. It has been created using a combination of floral patterned Bisazza mosaic tiles on the walls, with altogether more simplistic pure white Corian to the cantilever benches and ceiling. Visits to the showroom are by appointment, but architects and designers are welcome to bring their clients to see the various options for themselves, as well as to use the showroom as a convenient meeting place to discuss their projects. i Drรถm UK Drรถm House, Abbot Close, Byfleet, Surrey, KT14 7JN www.dromuk.com www.designerkbmag.co.uk

At Caple, all our wine cabinets feature state-of-the-art technology, including compressor cooling systems to retain every wine’s complex flavour. These cooling systems operate by maintaining the exact temperature, for wine is sensitive and will suffer from fluctuation. Our high-quality wine cabinets are so superior that they mimic wine cellars below ground. Anti-vibration gaskets and low-vibration compressors prevent any disturbance to the wine’s sediment balance, therefore wine stored in Caple’s cabinets tastes perfect when it’s finally poured. Choose from freestanding to built-in and in-column versions with single, dual and triple temperature zones in the Caple range, including the WC6216, dual zone, in-column wine cabinet pictured here. Our monthly spotlight on the iconic ideas that have shaped kitchen and bathroom design
Juicy Salif by Alessi
There are few designs for the home that have achieved quite the same level of instant recognition as the Juicy Salif from Alessi. One of the first designs of what was to be a long-standing collaboration with Philippe Starck, this cast aluminium citrus juicer was not part of the original brief given by Alessi founder Alberto Alessi. Having asked the French designer to come up with a new design for a stainless steel tray, he instead came back with this creation – conceived and visualised on a napkin over lunch at a restaurant in Capri and inspired by the shape of the squid on his plate. Alessi decided to produce this design anyway, and it proved to be a characteristically astute call. Designed in 1989, the Juicy Salif went on to sell over 800,000 units and is still available today. It is certainly true that the juicer has its critics when it comes to practicality but then Starck is reported to have said that the juicer was “not meant to squeeze lemons, but to start conversations. In any case, perhaps this is one of those rare occasions where function can be forgiven for coming secondary to form in appreciating this undoubted kitchen icon. i Alessi | www.alessi.co.uk
