Dyson has followed up its Airblade hand dryer (as increasingly seen in all good public toilets) with the Airblade tap which allows the user to wash and then dry their hands. Containing a small motor in the base of the tap, a jet of pressurised air is provided from the ‘wings’ on either side of the spout which dry hands quickly and effectively. It has a hefty £999 price tag so is very much a premium product, but it has been designed with home use in the kitchen or bathroom, as well as public washroom use in mind. Dyson | www.dyson.co.uk

The manufacturer says that the new additions mean that it can offer a unique front with a choice of 1,000 different combinations, when taking into account the various options on colours, finishes and designs which include basic, brushed, sandblasted,
vintage effects, aged effects and grove patterns.
The finishes can be brushed or deepgrain sanded, both of which can also be specified in the vintage option which offers a distressed corner edge to give a look of antiquity. The doors are available in a contemporary matt lacquer or a full range of standard and customized painted colours. Schmidt UK | www.schmidt-kitchens.com

the big question
Q - WHAT WATER SAVING TECHNIQUES DO DESIGNERS LIKE TO INCORPORATE IN THEIR PROJECTS? Malcolm Crawford, Technical Advisor at AKW:
16 pg
As some high-volume power showers are – surprisingly – capable of using more water in five minutes than it would take to fill a bath, it can be beneficial to install a shower incorporating a stringent flow restricting valve to limit the volume of water being used. As we’ve found that designers and specifiers in the UK are increasingly looking for bathroom products with eco benefits, we designed a few of our latest products with water saving specifically in mind. Our Luda S shower for example features three flow settings, allowing the user to specify whether the power should be set to ‘high’, ‘medium’ or ‘eco’, with targeted flow rates of 6.5 litres per minute (lpm), 5 lpm and 3.5 lpm respectively. Our recently launched range of brassware also features flow limiters as standard.
Molly McCabe, Owner/Principal Designer, A Kitchen That Works, Washington, US:
Thermostatic shower valves. You can turn water off while you shampoo or shave with the confidence and comfort of knowing you can turn the water back on without getting a blast of cold water. I have one in my home shower and find it irritating when I stay in hotels that donʼt have this option.
Allan Fry, Independent Bathroom Designer, Brisbane, Australia:
That’s true Molly. The same effect can be achieved with a chrome ¼ turn stop valve located between the wall outlet and shower head assembly. Apart from the convenience aspect, this $20 device will save many hundreds in water and energy costs over the years.

WARNING OVER CREDIT CARD SCAM The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association, (KBSA) has issued a warning to all retailers to beware of an Internet scam that involves a bogus customer ordering appliances with stolen credit cards. Several KBSA members have been caught up in the scam that appears to be running throughout the UK. Ruth Ward, KBSA Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We first heard of this last year and reported it to trading standards. We thought it was an isolated incident but we have now had numerous reports of the same scam. “We have issued a warning to all of our members to beware of orders coming in via the Internet or email for specific goods. The goods requested are usually stainless steel and high specification. “All communication is done by email – in most cases the customer claims to be deaf, hence no phone conversations or confirmations. The goods are collected by courier, normally within a couple of hours. As
far as we are aware the couriers are not involved and are also being paid via the stolen credit cards.” The KBSA advises that all retailers ensure that they meet, in full, their credit card provider's terms and conditions which should enable them to reclaim any losses between £100 and £30,000. They should also report any approaches that look like they may be part of this scam to their local Trading Standards office and the police. KBSA | www.kbsa.org.uk

The new generation of kitchen appliances offer much more than just gimmicks – there are some clever functional innovations on the market right now
The AGA iTotal Control cooker can be controlled remotely via mobile phone, smartphone, PC, laptop, iPad or tablet. It can be sent text messages with commands such as ‘Roasting oven on’, ‘All zones off’, or these commands can be placed via a dedicated website or app. Touchscreen controls allow the user to programme the cooker and each hotplate and oven operates independently. AGA | www.agaliving.com
Gorenje’s IQcook IQ641AC induction hob uses special sensors placed on pan lids to monitor the cooking process so the user doesn’t need to continually watch the hob. A stop-start function allows the cooking process to be temporarily suspended, then resumed with one touch of the StopGo button. Gorenje | www.gorenje.co.uk www.designerkbmag.co.uk

You may remember the launch of the first Internet-connected fridges back in the year 2000. They could detect when grocery stocks were low and automatically reorder them online, offering food management as well as multimedia capabilities. They came with lots of hype, a hefty price tag, and two fatal flaws – consumer apathy and some major system integration problems. Despite the new technologies, some said that people were never going to get too excited about appliances – that they’re just machines to help with the chores after all. While the online fridge may have been a bit of a false start for appliances with connectivity, appliance brands are still keen to sex up their offerings with devices that have an electronic brain,
which can make decisions for – or communicate with – the user. “The new interest in home dining and entertaining has changed the face of the kitchen appliance market, inspiring manufacturers to develop more sophisticated appliances that bring professional and semi-professional standards of cooking to the average home as well as the technology necessary for hapless cooks to cheat their way to culinary success,” says Rita Balestrazzi, Marketing Manager at Baumatic. “Some compact combination steam ovens offer numerous preset recipes and memory functions for favourite dishes that automatically set the ideal conditions for a selected dish to cook at the touch of a button.”
Fiona Scott, Brand Manager of Barazza at Euroline Sales & Marketing agrees: “With today’s busy lifestyles, free time is precious and so anything that helps to give some of that back is proving increasingly popular. With this in mind, the best recommendation I can make is an intelligent oven that takes the work out of cooking for you. For example, Barazza’s Velvet oven allows you to form a list of customised modes. So, you could create your very own ‘canapé’ setting with the oven programmed to cook at a certain temperature for a certain length of time, leaving you with time to dedicate to your guests rather than worrying about your canapés burning.” i
Baumatic’s Premium Line BCS455TS combi steam oven offers a choice of 60 preset recipes or up to 100 memory settings of the users’ own favourite dishes. It then sets the ideal cooking conditions accordingly. It has a regeneration programme that uses steam to warm pre-cooked or frozen dishes, plus a steam-puff that helps to humidify dishes that are drying out. Also boasts A energy efficiency, touch controls, 35-litre capacity, pause feature, self-cleaning programme, LCD full programmer (so oven can be programmed to turn on and off) and 11 functions including fan, grill, steam only and combi-steam. In addition to intelligent controls, there are technologies that enable power management and networking. Connected appliances can notify users about how much power they are using, and if networked to smart grids, they can optimise power consumption during lower-priced times. energy usage online and controlling appliances remotely. Home automation systems mean that it is already possible to operate appliances remotely via smart phone or tablet, perhaps preheating the oven before the homeowner walks in the front door or maybe having the washing machine or tumble dryer finish its load as they arrive home so it can be emptied promptly to avoid creased laundry. The appliance whizzes never cease to amaze with futuristic functions, from
tumble dryers that can send reminders that the filter needs cleaning to fridges that can track expiration dates, recommend recipe suggestions based on the contents within and have webcams to check on supplies while out shopping. The difference over the last couple of years is that the attention has been firmly on functional development rather than technology for technology’s sake. That can only be a good thing for making kitchens greener and smarter.i

Stylish Synergy A partnership between furniture brand Kartell and sanitaryware manufacturer Laufen has created a collection that brings together the best of both worlds
26

From left: Designer Roberto Palomba with Alberto Magrans, Senior Managing Director at Laufen, Claudio Luti, President at Kartell, and Marc Viardot, Director of Marketing and Products at Laufen.
Italian brand Kartell has a longstanding reputation in the furniture market, largely known for its items made of high quality plastic. However, it has not previously launched products into the bathroom sector, so its new collaboration with Swiss manufacturer Laufen represents something of a new direction for both companies. Under the Kartell by Laufen brand, the firms’ agreement covers the design, production and distribution through Laufen’s retail channels of a complete new bathroom range. The artistic direction for the project is another new venture for prolific design duo Ludovica+Roberto Palomba.
The resulting products are certainly as comprehensive as they are eye-catching. Items include seven types of washbasins and bathtubs (with ceramic available in black as well as white), as well as vanity units, open shelving and drawer units. Furniture is available in matt grey as well as gloss options in black, white, orange, plum and ‘Bordeaux’. Plastic items include the mirror, stool, shelving and floor-standing rack in a range of colours, and washbasin and bath mixer taps come with removable trays which continue the colour theme further throughout the collection.
One of the stars of the range is the bathtub, which features an illuminated slot overflow that runs the length of the bath, and which also has a mist system to create an ‘infinity’ style bathing experience.i Kartell by Laufen will launch in the UK in September 2013. The launch at ISH in Frankfurt last month of the new Happy D.2 and X-Large collections from Duravit are the latest fruits of an impressively long collaboration between the prolific design duo and the German sanitaryware manufacturer that stretches back to the early 1980s.
“It started about the time the iPod came on the market I guess. It made a real difference to how we perceive the things around us. Now we are all carrying around phones that are 5 or 6mm thick and we’ve got used to – and even expect to see – design with that kind of aesthetic.”
The link began with Dieter Sieger, the founder of the design studio which is now run by his two sons, designer Michael and manager Christian.
Christian adds that it is a trend that has permeated numerous different sectors – in the automotive market for example, cars are being made with aluminium frames to minimise the weight they have to carry, suitcases are being manufactured from ultra lightweight materials to make sure most of the weight being checked in is your belongings and not the case to carry them in. “It is as much an eco issue as anything else, but it makes sense to harness new technology to make things easier and more efficient to move – if it enhances the aesthetic too then that’s even better.”
From the stunning surroundings of Schloss Harkotten – a beautiful 18th Century castle in Northern Germany – the brothers have overseen a succession of influential product launches for Duravit and a multitude of other brands in kitchens, bathrooms and beyond. The new products presented at ISH represent significant re-workings of some of their previous designs. With Happy D.2 in particular, the big challenge was how to go about reinventing a product which already had such strong characteristics. Christian Sieger explained: “We started with the premise of setting out to do something completely new, perhaps with the same design understanding but with a new look that embraces the trends of today, with a lighter and simpler aesthetic. “As we went through the process however, we found that we kept touching on some of the same areas as Happy D in terms of design lines and structures. So we figured, why not take these structures and transform them into a new product that uses some of the elements that people are familiar with. “The original Happy D is now 15 years old, but it’s only now you see Happy D.2 that you notice the real differences in style and tastes that we have seen in that time in terms of the preferences for objects becoming lighter, more elegant and more sleek. It is representative of a broader shift, says Michael Sieger: “I think in the past, luxury products had to have that sense of weight and size, whereas now, high-end is more about a refined look, a lightness to the design and the use of less material.
Transferring this lightweight trend into the world of ceramics is certainly a technical challenge, but one which has evolved over recent years thanks to new technology. Michael explains: “As in any industry, we are seeing a great deal more precision in what it is possible to manufacture. It is partly our role as designers to push our partners to continue to develop new techniques and to challenge existing processes, but at the same time, we have to consider the cost implications.”
29
Christian agrees: “That’s the big pg challenge. We’re working with a natural material which has been more or less the same for a couple of thousand years and the potential scope for innovation is different to, say, metal or plastic, where the quality of the raw material can always be further refined and open up new possibilities.”
The X-Large furniture series is all about maximising storage space in the bathroom. It offers console depths of 550mm or 480mm and comes in a choice of eight different finishes from real wood to a high gloss lacquer Rounded corners characterise the new Happy D.2 range, giving it a more refined elegance than its predecessor. The washbasin is available with matching furniture, as a surface-mounted basin or as a classic pedestal basin. The collection also includes a mirror cabinet with an integrated sound system
i
“Also for fabric, wallpaper and upholstery, there has been a revolution as inkjet technology has transformed what they are able to do in size, scope and quality.” Embracing these new opportunities is a vital part of Sieger Design’s future work however, especially their projects in the bathroom sector. Christian says that the industry has come a long way in the time they have been designing products for the bathroom, i

“Our homes have countless charging points for our mobile phones and gadgets, but where 30 do we recharge?” pg
not least because consumers’ tastes have developed from basic functional needs to a much more ambitious requirement that takes account of different materials and styles. “I’m glad that we now have materials in the bathroom that people feel they can trust in that space and that they can use. At our house, we’ve had wooden floors in the bathroom for 15 years and never really worried that this was not waterproof or might not be generally considered as suitable for that kind of use. People need to learn what can be possible and that takes time.” Michael adds: “Design is just an answer to the overall needs of society, so inevitably it’s strongly linked to the habits and tastes of consumers. For example, our father – an architect and a man with a very modern outlook – moved into his new house 10 years ago but insisted he didn’t want the kitchen to be open-plan like almost everyone else is doing, because he doesn’t want guests to be watching while he cooks, or have the cooking smells everywhere throughout the house. “But the fact that more widely the kitchen has been opened up within the home is a result of a broader trend and a greater understanding of communication and socialising within the home.” He adds that the logical next step was to open up the bathroom to the bedroom, which he did in his own home to remove the physical barriers between these areas. The changes to the way in which the bathroom is used also requires a re-think about the role of bathroom products themselves. Christian says: “They become less about being functional items for
washing or cleaning and more important as items of furniture in their own right. That’s why we strive for this more elegant look, something that’s a little more sculptural, so that you enjoy looking at it rather than trying to find ways of hiding it away because it looks ugly.” Michael sees a further drastic shift in the way we look at bathroom furniture in the future, envisaging a point in around 20 years where the bathroom of a new house will typically start off empty, because people will move their bathroom fittings around like furniture – a more flexible, modular approach than is predominantly the case today. “People have become more mobile, so it makes sense to have a more mobile approach to important domestic items. Why not have a mobile bathroom to take to your next house?” Sieger Design has spent many years exploring some of these ideas in collaboration with Duravit. The brand has a reputation for working with established design names. Indeed, at ISH, new products from Philippe Starck and Matteo Thun were also launched. In an otherwise transient and often volatile business climate, it is encouraging to find a creative partnership that continues to stand the test of time. But what makes the link between manufacturer and design studio tick in the way that it does? Christian says: “There are not that many business relationships that have this certain DNA. It is a feeling, respect and understanding that is hard to describe. It is kind of like a marriage – you have good times and bad times. In all the time we have worked with Duravit, we’ve had many challenges, one or two projects that didn’t go as
well as we had hoped, but thankfully many more that have been successful. “The divorce rate is high in society and it can be the same in business, but it’s good that we have been able to work together through the challenges rather than just go our separate ways the first time something didn’t go as well as we would have liked. It pays dividends in the long run because I think we have something like a 90/10 success ratio so clearly something is right in that relationship.” He adds that Sieger Design’s approach with Duravit is very much a partnership, to the extent that the financial side of their collaboration is royalty-based, so the majority of their potential earnings from design work for the brand is linked to its commercial success. “It can mean it takes quite a long time for us to get our investment back,” Michael explains, “because we normally work at least two years on a new product range, and then it can be a year in production so we can have three or maybe four years before we begin to earn any money from the products that we design. But he adds: “It helps to focus and define our role as designers in that our main objective is not to act as some kind of cultural influence, to win design prizes, or feature on the cover of magazines – nice though that is – but rather it is to work with our partners to ensure that the products fulfil the needs of the market.” So what of those market needs for kitchens and bathrooms? The brothers see a further elevation in the importance of these spaces within the home. Michael says:

“We see huge potential for innovation in the kitchen and bathroom – how you spend your time in these rooms will be much more important than the aesthetic”
31

“We are absolutely convinced that these two rooms will remain the most important rooms in the house in the future because the future is very much about health. We see huge potential for innovation – the function of the product and how you spend your time in these rooms will be much more important than the aesthetic. These aspects will be considered even more important than how a product looks. “Probably over the last decade, the main focus for kitchen design was to show off. We think that in the future, people will concentrate more and more on how to use the kitchen for cooking, just as they are gradually starting to care more about the quality of the food they eat and where it comes from.” It’s a change in emphasis that needs to be properly acknowledged, says Christian: “Luckily, no-one wants to buy an ugly product, but we have to bring this together with an understanding of the importance of wellbeing, how important it is to recharge. Our homes have countless charging points for our mobile phones and gadgets, but where do we recharge? It’s about getting people back around the kitchen table to spend time with each other, or giving them the bathroom space that makes them want to have some ‘me-time’ to look after themselves. “Perhaps one of the most important roles for the designer is to bring the products closer to the consumers’ lifestyle and giving them an understanding of what they are buying and how it can make their lives that little bit better.” i

Hot water taps have taken on an elevated status in the kitchen – more consumer ‘must-have’ than added extra…
There are some appliances that are not up for negotiation when planning a kitchen - it goes without saying that you have to have an oven and a hob for example. In some cases however, a product that starts life as an extra level of luxury can gain prominence among consumers and take on the role as an important aspirational addition to the design. The hot water tap is perhaps one of those products that you never knew you needed until you have one. After all, most households have coped very well with a kettle for several decades. But lifestyles change, and the appeal of what the offerings in this rapidly evolving product category can offer is undeniably on the rise. i

Steve Rutter, Marketing Manager at Franke UK, says: “Although multifunctional taps command a premium, it’s a price that consumers are willing to pay for the speed and convenience that they offer in today’s busy lifestyles. Having instant boiling water − literally on tap − for the many daily tasks of making a cup of tea or coffee, boiling pasta, or blanching veg, offers practical and time-saving benefits which enhance the user’s pleasure in the kitchen and that is key these days.”
Franke’s Minerva Helix and Mondial models are constructed from solid stainless steel and offer hot, cold and instant boiling water. The Franke Minerva tap can be fitted new or retrospectively and requires a standard 35mm tap hole. The hot water tank also fits neatly behind a standard 150mm cabinet plinth. Franke | www.franke.co.uk
He adds that consumers love gadgets in their kitchen, especially when they are stylish and practical. They are aspirational and a status symbol, showing an appreciation of the latest technology and design trends. “Where once it was a builtin coffee machine or a KitchenAid mixer, now it’s the turn of the boiling water tap to make that statement. With a hot water boiling tap, a specifier can easily up-spec a kitchen with a desirable and practical gadget, that marks it out as being in tune with the very latest trends.” While boiling water technology is not new, Rutter says that Franke’s Minerva 3-in-1 tap broke new ground when it was launched in 2011 by offering hot, cold and instant boiling water in a single combined tap as opposed to other brands which have only focused, albeit successfully, on just delivering boiling water with a tap that sits in addition to the main tap style. Multi-functional taps are more in the consumer’s mind than they have ever been. Aside from its practical benefits, a hot water boiling tap is a piece of theatre in the kitchen adding to the social vibe that’s very important to today’s consumer.

Rutter adds: “From a standing start, our sales line has grown very strongly in just 18 months and we are delighted with the positive feedback from retailers and consumers with more 5,000 likes on our Facebook page. We have just launched three new tap styles called Irena, Helix and Mondial to the Minerva range, making four overall, because we believe that this segment of the market is set to grow very strongly and we want to make sure our retailers are well placed to capitalise on the potential out there. Helix and Mondial will be in solid stainless steel as we believe there is consumer demand for an even higher specification of tap build and finish at the top end.” i www.designerkbmag.co.uk

David Cole, Sales Director at Perrin & Rowe, believes that the hot water tap is part of a natural evolution in consumer expectations for the kitchen: “Busy lifestyles mean homeowners would rather have a pool of high quality, luxurious products to choose from. Retailers and thus manufacturers have been forced to reevaluate their product offering as a result to ensure they have a premium portfolio that can compete at the very highest level.
38
pg
He adds that Perrin & Rowe has been focusing on the idea of ‘added value’ in order to produce a premium quality product. “The manufacture, design and engineering process matters to the consumer in a way that it hasn’t before, so companies with greater design credentials are faring much better in the marketplace.” “Design and function therefore plays an important role and by ensuring we can offer a portfolio of products that offer more than one purpose − for example accommodating both hot and cold water − is key to remaining competitive. Filtration has also become a popular utility with consumers enjoying the idea of having purified water in their kitchens literally on tap.” Boiling water tap manufacturer Quooker has witnessed a big growth in awareness of the benefits its products can bring to a kitchen. “The boiling water tap has been perceived as something of a luxury, although once people have one installed, they tell us that it’s a necessity and something they would never be without,” says Quooker UK Managing Director Stephen Johnson. “The Quooker Fusion, as a single product combining, hot, cold and boiling water, saves purchasing a separate mixer tap and dedicated boiling water tap, so it makes opting for instantaneous boiling water a more affordable choice. “With the decision to provide boiling, hot and cold water from a single tap comes a greater responsibility on safety, so we’ve also added a host of additional features to make this one of the safest appliances in your kitchen. You can’t accidentally turn on the boiling water flow; you have to actively select the right setting in order to obtain boiling water, avoiding the possibility of accidental scalding.” Ashley Munden, European Managing Director for InSinkErator, also sees consumer awareness as a big factor in driving the development of this product i

category: “Today’s sophisticated consumer is ahead of the curve. They know exactly what they are looking for before they visit the retailer’s showroom. Designs must be stylish with functionality to match and keep the needs of the user in mind whatever they are buying.” Nick Taylor, Sales Director at Zip Heaters adds that the products in this market need to tick several boxes all at once, pointing to the example of his brand’s HydroTap and Sparkling Hydrotap which he says are environmentally and economically friendly: “Both systems incorporate Power-Pulse technology, which enables the system to adjust power supply to suit demand, to ensure optimum efficiency and help to reduce energy consumption daily. Compare this to the fact that every time you boil a kettle you could power your fridge for seven hours, you can quickly see that it is an easy way to reduce home electricity usage.”

Increasingly, flexibility is key too. For example, Pure H2O’s Quatreau tap has a unique modular approach that allows the consumer to configure a system that suits their needs. Customers can choose all four water options (with or without purification) or they can have just tap with boiling water, tap with chilled water, or a tap with sparkling and chilled. Ultimately, hot taps offer specifiers a genuine up-sell opportunity and it is one that – at the luxury end of the market at least – presents a compelling argument for adding real value to a kitchen project for the client. InSinkErator’s Munden says: “For retailers, in a continuously tough economic climate, they need to be at the very top of their game and constantly review their portfolio of products in the search for new opportunities and meaningful profit margins. “Consumer tastes and demands change all the time and even the most experienced retailer can be caught out and left behind if an important opening is missed. Very often this is due to the seemingly sensible policy of sticking to the tried and tested and overlooking kitchen appliances that become ‘invisible’ through being so discreet and efficient.

A house extension brings about a radical update of this kitchen space with an ultra-contemporary – and highly practical – new scheme
Going from traditional to all-out modern in the kitchen would be quite a culture shock for many, but that is exactly the change that the owners of this Newcastle home opted for when redeveloping their home.
The kitchen was created by designer Julia Brown of Mowlem & Co following the clients’ decision to extend their already substantial property in which the same kitchen studio had already fitted a kitchen four years previously. The room was being knocked through to more than double the size, and after considering re-using their original kitchen – which was in a classic English style – they came full circle and decided to go totally contemporary with glossy finishes. i

“The little touches… give the kitchen a level of elegance that the clients wanted included in this up-to-date new look for the heart of their home”
20
The brief was to complement the length that had been given to this room and to include a working practical kitchen layout to incorporate dining for eight, casual bar seats at the island, and a more formal bar area for the many social evenings they hold. This hand-made bespoke kitchen – which was shortlisted for the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards 2012 – utilising Grey Ash veneer on the tall bank of furniture which features a chunky ‘goalpost’ detail and external handleless design. Appliances in this bank of furniture include ovens by Gaggenau and refrigeration from Siemens. All base cabinets are Latte sprayed up to a high gloss finish in Mowlem’s factory and are all made in a linear style thanks to its handleless form. Worktops by Caesarstone complete the look.
A wall of hidden storage cabinets also cleverly conceals the sliding door mechanism which opens the doors to the hallway in an effortless motion, all of which is finished in a Grey Ripple Sycamore veneer. A corner of the room is dedicated to the bar area, which is all made in a Dark Stained Oak finish and includes an ice making machine and Sub Zero wine cooler. Other little touches in Brown’s design – such as mirrored plinths, extra-wide double drawers, and granite shelving in for the larder internals – give the kitchen a level of elegance that the clients wanted included in this very much up-todate new look for the heart of their home.i Mowlem & Co | www.mowlemandco.co.uk

designer | range cookers
Top of the Range Often seen as a traditional product, the range cooker has evolved to fulfil an important role in contemporary lifestyles
46
pg
The range cooker – once the preserve of farmhouse kitchens everywhere – can assume a role of the beating heart of the household, providing heat, hot water, and of course the ability to cook. Aesthetically desirable for all kinds of kitchen styles, the first big question to be addressed when specifying this major appliance is the level of functionality required.
The simplest system features a single burner that heats one or more ovens and a hotplate, while also providing warmth to the room in the manner of a giant storage heater. These models can have a back boiler that allows water to be heated, either for use in washing up or to channel into radiators. Some people think of this as free hot water, but the boiler will have to run at a higher temperature to provide this function, so will use more energy than if it were just
being used to cook and provide ambient heat. These models can take several hours to heat up sufficiently to cook with, so are usually left running all the time. Andy McCulloch, director of Cast Iron Range Cookers specialist company selling nine different brands of range, points out, “With a single burner, found mainly in solid fuel ranges, you are heating the water all the time the cooker is going, whether you want it or not.

So if it is connected to radiators, they have to be left on – even in the summer – or the pipes will overheat. “For most of the year people are quite content with that, and perhaps in the summer they aren’t going to be cooking so much anyway.” To avoid creating unwanted heat in the summer, some manufacturers offer a summer kit, which reduces
the number of radiators that need to be left on, while others, such as Esse or De Manincor, offer a matching electric or gas cooker that joins onto the range, as an alternative cooking source during hot weather.
Twin burner
Sam Lloyd, technical expert at Heritage Cookers, says that more sophisticated twin burner models offer greater control, “With a twin burner, the
boiler unit is not connected to the oven or hot plate.” This separates the functions of cooking and heating, so that each is only used when necessary. According to McCulloch: “Gas or oil range cookers with twin burners have one burner for cooking and one for central heating or hot water. The boiler can do anything a normal modern boiler on the wall can do, including being set to go on and off on a timer.” i

“People think that oil is a terribly expensive fuel to be using, but they aren’t aware that 48 per kW hour, it is cheaper than electricity” Fuel type
Manufacturers offer ranges fired by mains or LPG gas, oil, electricity, wood, solid fuels or pellets. Of course, installation is simplest with electric models as they don’t require a flue or connection to oil or gas pipes. And electric, oil and gas models react quicker, taking less time to heat up and offering greater levels of temperature control than wood or solid fuel. For those who don’t have access to mains gas, oil, may still be the best choice, says Lloyd, “People think that oil is a terribly expensive fuel to be using, but they aren’t aware that per kW hour, oil is cheaper than electricity.” Recent figures from the Governmentfunded Biomass Energy Centre suggest that to provide a kW hour of energy would cost 2.9p using wood chips, 4.2p using pellets, 4.8p with mains gas, 6p with oil, 7.6p with LPG and 14.5p with electricity. Nigel Morrison, Marketing Manager at Rayburn, has noticed an increased
interest in models using renewable fuels, with a surge in interest in wood-fired models, giving a 60-70% increase in sales. At Esse, a decade ago 80% of ranges sold ran on oil, 15% on gas and only 5% on solid fuel. Today, more than half of sales are of the wood-fired model, perhaps buoyed by a reduction to five per cent VAT for models which only burn wood. Whatever the fuel type, models still vary in their efficiency which can affect running costs. Heritage’s Lloyd points out that the modern pressure jet burners used in its oil-fired ranges are up to 50% more efficient to run than older forms of burner control.
Heating
Ranges that can be attached to central heating radiators have a BTU (British Thermal Unit) value, showing how much heat output they will produce. Rayburn models, for example, range from 8,000 BTUs, enough to run three or four radiators, up to 150,000 BTUs which will run a large house with 30 radiators.
pg
Cooking
Simple, single burner ovens usually offer a hot roasting oven and a simmering oven that is around half the heat. The temperature of these ovens may be adjustable, but the ratio usually remains the same, so if the main oven is reduced in temperature, both the second oven and the hotplate will also be cooler. Ovens with more burners allow greater independent control of the elements, and ranges fired with oil, gas or electric offer more precise control. According to Rayburn’s Morrison, for customers used to a conventional gas or electric oven, there is an element of relearning involved, adjusting to allowing a little extra time. But, he says, it is an effort that is well rewarded. “Ranges cook with indirect radiant heat which is gentle and kind to the food. Meat doesn’t shrink and it’s more forgiving for baking as it doesn’t suck the moisture out of cakes like a fan oven. Meat loses 15% less moisture when cooked in a range and when you taste the food it does genuinely taste better.”i

Ideas Man
After many years of creating new classics that have helped shaped British bathroom design, Barrie Cutchie’s creative flow shows no sign of abating… Barrie Cutchie first started out in the bathroom industry in 1976 when he came to London and started buying old telephone type taps and mixers from scrap and salvage yards. These taps were stripped of their chrome and re-sold as solid brass from his permanent stand in Bermondsey Antique Market. From there, he started buying and selling refurbished original bathroom pieces and selling them from his antiques shop in Camden Town.
DESIGNER K&B: What made you choose a career in design? BARRIE CUTCHIE: I didn’t really, it was just something that happened along with everything else which is a circumstance of your surroundings and what is happening at that time. My love of working in the antiques and memorabilia industry with my shop in Camden when we started BC Sanitan, seemed to give me an eye for choosing items that my customers would buy. In many ways, having a company which sells to the bathroom industry is exactly the same as having a market stall. You trust your judgement to make that product; you just make a lot more of them. Although we sell a lot of contemporary styles now with the Thinn and Acrymite ranges of baths, we were initially known for the traditional side of things, and in many ways it was easier because we sold the originals which had gone before and you could use these original basins and loos as a base for your designs, albeit you have to adapt them to modern manufacturing methods. However, you still had to judge which of the originals were truly excellent, and a lot of the competition at the time who tried to get into the traditional sanitaryware market got that badly wrong. DESIGNER K&B: What trends do you see as having the biggest impact on bathroom design right now – and which of these do you think are here to stay?
In the late 1970s, Cutchie started BC Sanitan and also became one of the three directors who founded the Imperial Bathroom Company in 1988, where he also designed their early ranges. In 1998, he started BC Designs where he continues to design innovative freestanding baths. We caught up with him to find out about his distinguished industry background and how new materials are enabling him to bring a fresh approach to bathroom product design.
CUTCHIE: I get to see a lot of showrooms on my travels and the main thing I see now is wall mounted cabinets with a pull-out draw (soft close, of course) and worktop or a long basin – they are absolutely everywhere. Some showrooms have 10-15 different versions of the same idea, in different finishes, from lots of companies. I know this is a very practical solution for storage but there are a lot of suppliers going for the same market and it is quite difficult for the public to discern the differences in quality because you cannot immediately tell who makes which unit. Therefore, this may drive the prices down in the long term.

This style could be around for quite a while, as it is adaptable in that you can add more cabinets when you need more storage. DESIGNER K&B: Who – or what – inspires you? CUTCHIE: Rock lead guitar - the likes of Hendrix, Zepellin and AC/DC never fail to make me stop and listen. In terms of designers, I would say Antoni Gaudi. Where he got his ideas from I will never know. His Barcelona offerings are a mix of Hobbit, Art Nouveau, Deco, and Aztec. He is the true designer of ‘different’, streets ahead of everyone else for building design. I just get the feeling that all of the architects after him pinched a bit of his inspiration and ideas.

As for modern designers, probably Phillipe Starrk for Starck 1 which is a real game-changer in the bathroom industry. Mark Wilkinson is inspirational too for what he has done for kitchen design. DESIGNER K&B: What has been your own favourite product so far? CUTCHIE: It has to be the BC Sanitan Victorian Suite. It was the first complete traditional suite which really started the whole trend around 1980. We had no idea it would grab the imagination of so many people.

We worked very hard on it in very positive times. It was my first involvement in a ‘proper’ business. We also had a lot of fun doing it. i www.kb-network.co.uk

“There is a very fine line between what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ when designing a suite or a bath” DESIGNER K&B: Tell us about the new Acrymite baths? CUTCHIE: We wanted to make a range of good quality acrylic baths which would stand up to scrutiny. A lot of freestanding baths have a gel-coat outer which is very thin and cannot be mended if damaged. We have used drawn acrylic outer panels made in the same material as the inner, so you can take scratches out. It allows us to enter the market at a more competitive, different price level to that of our solid surface Cian Thinn baths which have been a great success over the last seven years. DESIGNER K&B: How have consumer tastes and expectations changed during the time you have been working in the industry? CUTCHIE: What a change we have seen over these years! When we started, Avocado coloured bathroom suites had brought colour into the bathroom for the first time with plastic, creaking gel coated baths tubs. The growth of Acrylic sheet as a medium to make baths gave some credibility and trust back to the cheaper end. We brought traditional to the mass market while Ideal Standard and Armitage continued their dominance of the trade sanitaryware business. The showrooms became less insular in what they looked at to buy and sell and started buying from Europe to show more contemporary designs. Fantastic contributions on quality, reliability and style came from Villeroy and Boch, Hansgrohe and Grohe and this made the buying public start to insist on hardware which would perform and last. It showed us all that they were willing
to pay for quality and service. Everyone made decent money out of it. Contemporary is now riding high but there is still a lot of classical-ware sold for the nostalgic market. DESIGNER K&B: What are the good and bad things about the changes that have taken place in the bathroom industry over the last 30 years or so? CUTCHIE: We have dipped our toes in the electrical side of things over the years with our lighting, switches, mirrors and cabinets. Unfortunately, the electrical industry has a terrible habit of having good ideas which sell at a decent price for a few months, then everybody does ‘their version’ of it, the price then plummets and nobody makes any money out of it. The bathroom industry is in danger of falling into the same nasty habit. The saving grace is that good quality sanitaryware is very hard and very expensive to make. The cheap ceramic from the Far East does not stand up to scrutiny on glaze quality and pinholes when compared to the good manufacturers such as V&B and Imperial Bathroom Company. However, a lot of consumers are happy that it looks OK and doesn’t leak – to be fair, they are probably not into bathrooms like we are! Showrooms need profits to be able to maintain their showrooms but customers have no embarrassment when demanding big discounts and are willing to buy cheap from the Internet companies, sometimes when the showrooms have done all the work in helping them choose the right products for their schemes.
The Shui bath from BC Designs’ Thinn range
It is hard to stop this, and hands up, I don’t know what the solution is to the problem, apart from having offerings which you do not allow to be sold by Internet companies. But then what do you do when a great showroom has an excellent and pro-active website? Training your sales staff to close the deal when the customers are face to face is an obvious method but information is always at hand on the nearest smartphone. DESIGNER K&B: What has been your toughest design challenge? CUTCHIE: Coming up with the ‘next thing’ after the BC Sanitan Victorian Suite as it was such a memorable change to the styles which were on offer at that time. We had sold BC Sanitan in 1986 and I was offered a basin and pedestal which had something about it which could be as good. I changed it to make it ‘right’ and the Imperial Oxford Suite was born. I later came up with the Imperial Astoria Deco Suite which still sells in big quantities. There is a very fine line between what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ when designing a suite or a bath - or anything really. You just know, and that is probably why we do it. I always think that when the prospective customer goes into a showroom where you have one of your products on display, you are competing with everything else in there. They will slowly walk through the aisles and you get about 2-3 seconds to stop them in their tracks as they pass your products. My objective is to halt them and make them walk over to our offering for a longer look, hopefully because we make it ‘right’.i BC Designs | www.bcdesigns.co.uk

The Personal Touch
Colour in the kitchen is one of the best ways to give the home a sense of personality, says Tony Nicholas, Managing Director, Nicholas Anthony designer kitchens
When it comes to colour, there are two ends of the scale: people go for earthy or neutral colours for their cabinetry, colours from the natural world, or they go for bright, strong colours, but usually as an accent or through decorations and accessories. A new kitchen is a big ticket item, especially at the quality end of the market and clients are looking for a long-term purchase. They are not going to be too bold with their colour statements as they want something they can live with for a long time. A colourful accent can be changed more easily than an entire kitchen and accessories can be replaced with no great cost. There is still a high degree of conservatism when it comes to colour in the kitchen, so for example, a client may go for a cream kitchen but bring in colour with a glass splashback, or opt for one unit in an accent colour, or choose a statement worktop in a deep colour – though again the colour trend for worktops still embraces a natural look, such as dark wood. We encourage people to put their personal mark on their kitchen, and introducing an element of colour is one way to do this For the kitchen professional, always searching for new ideas in the showroom, both to stand out from the
competition and attract customers, colour is crucial. Different colours, along with different textures and materials, will mark out your displays as a little bit different and will prove an attractive focal point for prospective customers.i Above Proline 128 in cubanit acrylic and Green-Grey Oak veneer from Nicholas Anthony Right Poggenpohl +Segmento in high gloss lacquer and teak dĂŠcor lava wood effect

Design Classic
Our monthly spotlight on the iconic ideas that have shaped kitchen and bathroom design
The Hayon Collection by Jaime Hayon for Bisazza A new, yet familiar looking bathroom aesthetic was born when Bisazza launched the Hayon Collection, a refined classic-yet-modern range by Madrid-born designer Jaime Hayon.
It features a mix of styles that perfectly sums up the current trend for design fusion. Hayon says that the main thrust of this melting pot was a nod to the glamour of the 1930s combined with a Scandinavian touch together with some ‘feminine’ shapes.
Although a relatively new product to be considered a classic (given that it was launched at ISH in 2011), it nevertheless remains the signature collection of the Bisazza Bagno offering. Arguably, it also marked a defining point in bringing about a more delicate sanitaryware and furniture style that perfectly suits the growing trend for a more open plan bathroom/bedroom configuration. i Bisazza Bagno | www.bisazzabagno.com
