Just how striking, that’s your decision.
The difference is Gaggenau. Whether you prefer understatement or a design statement, the ovens 200 series is sure to speak volumes. It looks both elegant and stylish when integrated into a dark wall, while a light-coloured background will ensure it really stands out. In both cases, your kitchen will show your excellent taste, thanks not only to the series’ design but also to the technology inside. Because with the combination of an oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer, even the most ambitious dishes will be a success. Just how ambitious, that’s also your decision. t’s hard to believe that a long, cold winter is finally gone and we can look forward to – hopefully – a few warmer months ahead. Certainly things will be hotting up for the K&B sector this month at London’s ExCel where kbb LDN takes place as part of the first ever May Design Series.
Welcome to the May issue of Designer Kitchen & Bathroom magazine
The show brings some of the leading names from kitchens and bathrooms under the same roof as big hitters from the interior design and lighting sectors. kbb LDN has a reputation for attracting a good number of extremely high quality visitors so exhibitors will be hoping for a busy few days. We’ll be there for the duration so rest assured, if you can’t make it along in person, we’ll bring you all the best from the show over the next couple of issues. In fact, that’s just what we’re doing this month too – presenting all the highlights from ISH 2013 which took place in Frankfurt recently. Plenty of potential visitors were thwarted in their efforts to get there by snow and ice but we battled through to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
Enjoy the issue!

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
The Air kitchen by deVOL made a big impact when it was launched at 100% Design in London last September. Now it has some new colours to add to its look.
Designed by Enzo Berti, the Nabhi collection of basins comprises 16 different shapes and sizes and is available in 8 marble-types. In addition to the classic Calacatta and Estremoz Whites, these include ‘statement’ marbles such as green Verde Ming, Alicante Rosso (terracotta-coloured), distinctive Emperador Dark and the mottled grey mix of Grigio St Marie. Kreoo | www.kreoo.com
The latest hues are Alpine White and Sky Blue, both of which give this distinctive kitchen an altogether different look to its original green. The Air kitchen is now available in 10 different colours, ranging from natural whites and greys to vibrant blue, green and orange. deVOL | www.devolkitchens.co.uk

For the high-end kitchen The philosophy of a modern kitchen: A modern kitchen is full of contradictions. It must be multifunctional and have an a esthetic clean design. Often it is placed in an open environment partly functioning as a kitchen and partly as a living room/social space. Equipped with the necessary appliances, but at the same time it should take up limited space. And last but not least it must fit the user’s needs for functionality and ergonomics. By adding movement to your kitchen these contradictions can be eliminated. Movement via linear actuator technology can hide appliances not in use thereby creating clean multifunctional surfaces, such as lift kitchen tables to ergonomic correct working heights, or bring down cupboards to reach tableware. There are endless possibilities when adding electric movement.

the big question
Q - WHICH ‘ADDED VALUE’ KITCHEN PRODUCTS DO YOU MOST RECOMMEND TO CLIENTS? Twan Thijssen, Owner, Thijssen-Schilders, Eindhoven, Netherlands: We advise glass splashbacks. Also available with photoprints. They create a clean looking design with a high end touch.
Jonathan Rowland, Area Manager, Wellborn Cabinets, Richmond, US:
By far the greatest value any of us can add is our experience. The average consumer remodels one kitchen in their lifetime, whereas designers remodel hundreds or thousands over our careers. Best use of space, correct and attractive lighting, proper electrical, useful storage, and timeless (not too trendy) looks are all ways we can build great value for our clients. In addition, a creative design can take a ‘stock’ kitchen and turn it into a ‘custom’ kitchen in the eyes of most consumers. Using changes of depth and height, using overlays and moldings to create an inset look, and interesting molding treatments can add significant appeal to a kitchen. This all greatly increases the resale value without necessarily increasing the budget.
Charlie Baratta, Kitchen Designer, Kitchen Expo, Haledon, US:
I design like I’m coming in the door with a bag of groceries and an infant under my arms. Function first. www.designerkbmag.co.uk

Norcros in Vado Takeover Brassware manufacturer Vado has been acquired by Norcros. Vado, which has up to now been a privately owned business, has achieved recent growth that outstripped that of the overall bathroom brassware market.
The business began 25 years ago as a small operation distributing bathroom accessories. It gradually developed its own products and brands, expanding into taps, showers and valves, and now has a workforce of around 150 people, with sales to over 60 countries worldwide, achieving in excess of £26 million in sales turnover. Vado Managing Director Jim Williams said: “We are proud of what we have built, and we now look forward to being part of a group giving us even more financial strength and networks across the globe to support our ambitious growth plans.” Other brands already part of the Norcros group include Triton Showers and Johnson Tiles. DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR BMA The Bathroom Manufacturers Association is celebrating an awardwinning double header after it picked up two prizes in as many days. First, Chief Executive Yvonne Orgill received the Special Achievement Award at the kbbreview Awards in London for her outstanding contribution to the bathroom industry. Then the BMA collected the Business Innovation Award at the Sentinel Business Awards in Stoke-on-Trent for its Water Label Scheme. Launched in the UK in 2007, the scheme has proven such a success it is now planned to be rolled out to 27 European countries. The entire labelling scheme has over 2,500 products with 200 of them registered Europe-wide. From amongst 130 submissions from a broad range of entrants, the award was presented to the BMA for an idea which was judged to have made a significant contribution to business and the judges were keen to hear about the intellectual processes which gave rise to its design and development.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Orgill. “We just wouldn’t have got The Water Label to where it is now – in Europe – without a lot of hard work (and sleepless nights) by a small and dedicated team of BMA staff supported by our industry membership. It’s just brilliant to see how it’s all come together!” BMA | www.bathroom-association.org

Burgbad presented the latest additions to its rc40 range. Created by Nexus Design, the concept separates the furniture from the traditional supply and wastewater infrastructure to allow greater flexibility in room layout. Individually configurable units can be arranged to form complete modules that can be positioned anywhere in the room. The approach is intended to enhance open plan living and
further blur the boundaries between the functional aspects and the more relaxation-based areas of the bathroom. The system is based on a steel ‘skeleton’ concealed within the wall from which the furniture is supported and which makes numerous design options possible, including a striking ‘floating sink’ which has an almost weightless appearance. 1. Alape launched A System Addit, a new modular furniture programme specifically intended for washstands with a wide range of finishes. It also presented its Sondo basin (pictured) which puts the brand’s glassed steel material to good use with this finely measured 3mm thick design by Gerhard Busalt which is a fusion of the classic bowl shape with the modern, purist form of the cylinder.
2. As well as its headline Kartell by Laufen range (see Designer Kitchen & Bathroom, April 2013), Laufen also presented SaphirKeramik, a new ceramic material that is considerably harder and stronger than normal ceramic. This enables washbasins to be made with more closely defined radii and edges than previously possible.
3. A lesson in understated design by Matteo Thun, Duravit’s DuraStyle range has been designed with simplicity and functionality at its heart.

The title Style Moderne uses the original term for the Art Deco movement and the collection features key design elements synonymous with the period such as stepped forms, geometric facetted shapes and linear design in a contemporary interpretation. All products in the range are available in polished nickel, chrome plate and antique gold, with black chrome or main body finish controls. Samuel Heath | www.samuel-heath.com

STYLE SELECTOR
Rachel Martin, Director of Merchandising at bathroom retailing C.P. Hart, on the trends that defined this edition of ISH… TECHNOLOGY is big news when it comes to the bathroom as many of the brands exhibiting at ISH showed. Hansgrohe, Dornbracht, Toto, Viega and Grohe were among the key manufacturers investing heavily in making technology in the bathroom more accessible and affordable. Specifically, Hansgrohe has introduced the Select range which incorporates a push button mechanism that alters the flow of both fixed and hand-held shower heads.

In terms of COLOURS AND MATERIALS, gloss is becoming less prominent, with Kerlite taking centre stage. This modern material gives a matt, almost stone-like finish and works well on a wide range of bathroom furniture. Other popular textures and finishes include linen prints and wood grains, whilst grey is definitely the colour of choice. Varying from the very light to the very dark – with added elements of blue and green hues – this palette was mostly coupled with white and wenge finishes as well as modern solid surface materials. Mixed with a growing trend for natural materials and textured finishes over high gloss finishes, this dominating palette demonstrates the continued importance of a neutral ‘Scandi’ scheme.
10 9. Sound Wave is an audio system for Kaldewei’s 3.5mm steel enamel baths that plays music from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as tablets, smartphones or laptops. With the bath acting as the ‘speaker’, it works with or without water. The user can pair up any Bluetooth device (up to a maximum of 8 per household) and can be retro-fitted to existing Kaldewei baths.
10. The Bette Silhouette bath range has been launched in the two-colour option of violet (exterior) and white (interior) with a perfect meeting of the two enamel colours on the rim. They are also available in a black and white BiColour option or in a choice of over 1,000 single colours.

The STREAMLINE look was also on show, with sleeker and thinner rimless designs becoming more evident within bathroom ceramics and composite materials. Key brands displayed a selection of rimless ceramic products, promoting hygiene as well as minimalist design. The developing trend for thin baths and thin seat pans is
now beginning to filter into the marketplace. Previously, thin seats were associated with high-end ceramic manufacturers. However, we are now seeing volume ranges incorporating a thin seat option for an updated look. We also noticed a trend for COOL CLASSICS. With the lines between contemporary and traditional design becoming increasingly blurred, classic looks have been updated with modern finishes and traditional products are being coupled with new-age materials. Suppliers such as Samuel Heath are beginning to launch and develop more traditional taps in varying finishes and handles contributing to this Cool Classic look. In previous years, gold has always been associated with glamour and traditional style but at ISH 2013, we noticed it has been given a modern makeover by injecting hues of red. Hansgrohe displayed the red-gold finish well on the Starck Organic range giving this modern tap a classic twist. This year also saw brands such as Duravit, Laufen and Bette working harder than ever on RESTYLING their entry-level product. Previously volume product has been associated with basic designs and simple lines. However, we are now witnessing volume products becoming increasingly stylish with varying finishes and interesting furniture compositions. Instead of concentrating all efforts on launching new innovative styles, brands are refocusing their efforts on core lines and expanding their appeal to target a wider market. It means that even volume lines are beginning to have a designer edge.

ISH is more than just a bathroom exhibition, it is the host of a major design competition too, reports Grahame Morrison The busy visitor to the ISH event could be forgiven for overlooking one of Europe’s most important design competitions for the bathroom industry as they dash around the cavernous aircraft hangar-like halls filled with stands that are almost individual exhibitions in their own right. But tucked away on one of the foyers in the Frankfurt exhibition complex was a display of the products selected from over 190 entries submitted by 112 exhibitors as worthy of receiving the ‘Design Plus powered by ISH’ seal of approval. The Design Plus award is one of the most important awards to win in Germany for
products exhibited at various trade fairs. It was been presented at the Ambiente trade fair for 30 years and for the last 10 years it has been part of ISH – hence Design Plus powered by ISH.
because of the choice of materials, or its innovative practical use,” says Wolfgang Marzin, President and CEO of Messe Frankfurt, in his introduction to this year’s Design Plus Awards catalogue.
And while this may be an award presented at a German-based exhibition, there is a growing response by manufacturers from other countries to take part in the competition; this year 15 different nations were represented by entries. A seven-strong expert jury, organised by the German Design Council, had the unenviable task of selecting the shortlisted products.
“Design provides the crucial difference between outstanding products and everyday standards,” adds Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of the German Design Council. “The Design Plus competition demonstrated this once again. Only those who proactively foster the development of good designs will find themselves in the winning teams.”
“Good design gets noticed – be it through a clever idea,
It is perhaps fitting that in this prestigious design
competition there is no outright individual ‘winner’, but 34 individual products that were shortlisted for recognition with the Design Plus label. “Design Plus powered by ISH gives manufacturers and designers an outstanding marketing tool,” says Wolfgang Marzin, “a seal of approval that lets consumers know that a product’s quality is above average. The competition, run by Messe Frankfurt, honours those ISH exhibitors’ products that stand out for their combination of sustainability, aesthetics and functionality. i German Design Council | www.german-designcouncil.de

3. The consistent geometry and striking minimised edge of the washbasin in linking the design signature throughout the Happy D.2 range found favour with the jury, as did the height-adjustable chrome substructure which they thought provided “an exciting contrast to the soft, feminine design”. Duravit | www.duravit.de 4. With the Dyson Airblade Tap, the jury noted, one can both wash and dry your hands. The jury particularly liked this innovative twoin-one approach that the minimalist stainless steel product provides. The independent infrared sensors that ensure that just as much water and air that is needed is provided will help to prevent water wastage. Dyson | www.dyson.co.uk 5. The Istanbul collection by Ross Lovegrove for VitrA has been around for a little while now, but the jury liked the Istanbul Addition mineral cast washbasin, inspired by elementary forces, that has been added. This provides a reduced shape that, thought the jury, was previously unseen in bathrooms. VitrA | uk.vitra.com.tr 6. In the jury’s opinion, XEIS by Kaldewei is a contemporary interpretation of classic shower areas. The steel enamel shower surface and wall outlet represents the first solution that boasts a continuous flush-tofloor shower area with an integrated gentle slope and water drainage into a wall outlet. Kaldewei | www.kaldewei.de 7. Geberit International was the only manufacturer with two products on the Design Plus powered by ISH shortlist. The single-piece Sigma 70 flush plate “amazed” the jury as it has no moving parts or edges. It functions without buttons which makes it very hygienic. The AquaClean Selsa shower toilet was, in the jury’s unanimous opinion, an elegant offer in the ever-growing shower
toilet market as it combines modern hygiene and design standards. Geberit | www.geberit.com 8. The concept behind Hansgrohe’s ShowerSelect product family is one of simplification of the bathroom services, replacing twist controls wherever possible with push buttons that are instinctive to use – even for a first-time user in a guest bathroom or hotel. The square shape of the individual panels will also suit any tile pattern – a detail the jury particularly liked. Hansgrohe | www.hansgrohe.com 9. iLook Move by Keuco is a collection of bathroom make-up mirrors in two shapes although the jury particularly liked the round version. In addition to the outstanding intensity of the light, the subtle solid mechanism was praised by the jury. Keuco | www.keuco.de 10. The ability of SaphirKeramik by Laufen to be used to produce products designed with a radii of just 1-2mm impressed the jury. This opens up totally new opportunities with a ceramicbased material with regards to design features that were previously only available with material such as glass or enamelled steel. Laufen | www.laufen.com 11. The Savoy range of bathroom brassware designed by Matteo Thun for Zucchetti has an elegant retro look with more than a nod towards classic design that will make it extremely suitable for traditional style hotels. Numerous finishes and decorative solutions for handles make this a very diverse collection. “A refined and extremely versatile product that interprets classic design in a cutting-edge, highly innovative way”, noted the jury. Zucchetti | www.zucchettidesign.it 12. The Grohe Blue Mono water filter system dispenses drinking water in a variety of ways: fully carbonated, semi carbonated or still. To be sold in Germany as an environmentally friendlier solution to crates of drinking water, Blue Mono features clear symbols to indicate the desired carbonating setting. Grohe | www.grohe.com 13. Zoe by KWC is a kitchen mixer designed for the premium sector. The jury particularly liked the counterbalance when the mixer is turned. This continues even if the mixer is at an angle, seeming to trace the extended arc of a jet of water. KWC | www.kwc.ch

POWER RANGERS
Product Marketing Manager Built-in, Whirlpool We have a long-term commitment to the environment and green issues, and have had them well in hand long before they became a focus of business and society. In 1970, the company established the corporate office for environmental control, and was the world’s first appliance manufacturer to announce a global greenhouse gas reduction target. Whirlpool has developed a Green Generation range of appliances for both built-in and freestanding lines. They feature the company’s 6th Sense technology that detects key variables in the environment and adapts to different requirements. The special sensors help to improve food conservation in refrigeration products and enhance cooking, laundry and dishwashing performance all whilst reducing resource consumption. Recently, 6th Sense has been introduced to the ACM 847/BA induction hob, which not only keeps energy usage to the minimum, but its special technology equips the induction hob with sensors to monitor the temperature of the pan and adjust the power to reach and maintain boiling point rapidly. 6th Sense automatically senses boiling point and indicates to the user with an acoustic signal when the water has boiled. The hob will also turn off instantly, should the pan be in danger of boiling dry. 6th Sense technology also saves up to 20% energy and time thanks to the booster option available on each zone. The kitchen appliances sector is certainly an exciting market at the moment, as products continue to develop at a lightning speed, offering the consumer even better energy efficiency and technology that minimises resource use. Laundry is a sector that is ripe for continued improvement; manufacturers are really investing here and the results are being seen through the variety of new technologies being introduced. Laundry products can be very energy hungry, and manufacturers continue to improve their appliances to make them as efficient as possible. Tumble dryers in particular have seen real advancements over the last year or so – heat pump technology is being used by ever more brands to maximise efficiency, including Gorenje. This is technology that we believe will spread further throughout the marketplace, eventually becoming available at all price points. Furthermore, manufacturers such as ourselves are incorporating sensor technology into their washing machines, which manages exactly the right amount of water required for each and every wash and ensures that not a drop is wasted. This year, Gorenje launches a new range of washing machines with SensoCARE technology. Intelligent SensorIQ technology with numerous integrated sensors constantly monitors the washing process, making sure the use of energy, water, and time is always accurate. Based on collected data, the intelligent SensorIQ technology automatically adjusts and optimises the washing process according to the selected program and the type and weight of the laundry. As with all appliances in this challenging economic climate, energy efficiency is the big story, and Maytag has responded to this across all product categories, investing in the reduction of energy and water consumption.
Consumers are always looking for appliances that can help them save money on their energy bills, but they need to be easy to use and reliable as well. And this is where new technology is playing a huge part.
Maytag’s IntelliSense technology plays a huge part in minimising use of resources across all Maytag’s products, including laundry, dishwashing and cooling. It is featured on selected washing machines, including the new MWA 10149WH, and can offer savings of up to 70 per cent for energy, water and time, helping to reduce monthly outgoings and protect the planet. IntelliSense technology senses the size of each load and adjusts the amount of resources required whilst providing excellent garment care, performance and results.
For example, Indesit’s new range of Eco washing machines are packed with energy saving features like the new ‛20 degree Zone’, which has three special programmes that use drum agitation at the start of the cycle to relax fibres and give you all the cleaning power of a 40 degree wash, and the innovative easy to use ‘Energy Saver’ button, which drops the temperature down to 30 degree for great washing performance and an energy saving of up to 70% on a cottons cycle.
With the rise in demand for super size capacity fridge/freezers, manufacturers are now investing in greener cooling technology, not only to keep fridge/freezer running costs to a minimum, but also to ensure that their models attain the mandatory A+ grade of energy efficiency.
Marketing Manager Maytag
A further feature in the Maytag laundry collection which has impacted on the energy efficiency of the appliance is the use of IntelliSense technology on the MTD09HPWH/1 dryer. The IntelliSense sensor drying system has been boosted by a new algorithm, which detects the humidity and dryness level of the load with real precision, controlling and adapting the drying cycle automatically, saving valuable time and energy. Maytag | www.maytag.co.uk
Marketing Manager Baumatic
Brand Director Indesit
Energy saving induction technology is also coming within everyone’s reach with the development of affordable, value-for-money products. Induction uses significantly less energy than other types of electric hob and is even more efficient than gas. Indesit’s Which? recommended Prime 60cm frameless induction hob (VIA640C) is a speedy, clean, cooking machine and faster than gas (it’ll boil a pint of water in just 90 seconds!) and it’s easily controllable. Indesit | www.indesit.co.uk
Holiday buttons or energy-saving modes have become hugely popular, allowing consumers to save energy but without having to sacrifice fridge/freezer use. Such buttons need only be activated when the fridge/freezer is not in full use or when the user is away from home. The buttons either switch the fridge off entirely and raise the temperature of the freezer, or increase the temperature of both the fridge and freezer sections. Some brands now offer energy efficient technology that can help to preserve fresh food for longer. Energy-saving LED lights are sometimes used to create artificial UV lighting, so that the effects of photosynthesis can be replicated. This simulated photosynthesis helps to regenerate and prolong the life of fresh foods, using only minimal energy. Certain models can save investment in additional refrigeration products, offering multi-purpose temperature controlled storage compartments that can be used to store a choice of more than one food or drink type. There are now temperature controlled compartments that can be used as either built-in pantries or alternatively, as built-in wine chillers. The temperature can be switched to suit whatever the user needs to store at the time. Baumatic | www.baumatic.co.uk

Choosing the right mix of appliances for the household is vital. For example, in a household of between 3-4 people we would advise a single oven paired with a matching compact combination microwave or steam oven for best capacity and flexibility. Especially in this testing economic climate, low energy cooking methods, such as slow cooking, are becoming more popular, either using a worktop model or a more sophisticated built-in model, such as the new Smeg CT29-2 warming drawer.
Miele understands that energy efficiency and consumption is at the forefront of the customer’s mind when selecting a new appliance, and with the recent changes to EU regulations, this has highlighted energy efficiency even further.
The rise in popularity of energy efficient appliances recently can be attributed more to saving financially on energy bills rather than solely on people trying to lower their carbon footprint. Although the initial factfinding mission into eco appliances allows the consumer to feel as if they’re being more environmentally friendly, one of the deciding factors is actually the fact that the appliance is likely to save them some money by reducing their energy consumption.
Product Development and Training Manager, Smeg (UK)
Smeg’s ‘Linea’ ovens have a 2.3 kWh low energy setting which results in an energy saving of approximately 10%. Induction hobs are the obvious energy saving choice and are more affordable than ever. For a single-person household, we would suggest a compact combination for maximum flexibility and convenience, steam for speedy, efficient and healthy cooking, completed with an induction hob, possibly a 2-zone if the householder doesn’t entertain a lot. In terms of washing, Smeg offers a Flexi Time option on most laundry programmes which saves up to 55% on the programme duration and associated energy consumption and a Quick Time option on dishwashers, achieving similar time reductions. We devote an enormous amount of time to research, to find out what customers’ key focuses are when it comes to appliances, and incorporate these into our product development, producing highly energy efficient, reliable and premium domestic appliances. For refrigeration, research has shown that consumers’ key focus is on energy efficiency, storage, price and style/design, with frostfree and warning alarm features also being taken into consideration. This month, Miele will be introducing a new generation of built-in refrigerators and freezers – the K30.000 range – which will include A++ energy efficiency ratings across the whole range with many models offering a ‘PerfectFresh’ system that keeps fruit and vegetables crisp, fresh and vitamin-rich for up to four months longer. In terms of Laundry, consumers are now more aware of the effect that their lifestyles have on the environment and are keen to take steps to reduce the use of energy and water where they can. With more people in the UK having a water meter at home, upgrading to a laundry product which uses efficient levels of water is one of the quickest ways to control household bills. Similarly, Miele’s dishwashers offer features such as intelligent load recognition systems that lets just the correct amount of water in to the dishwasher, enabling water consumption to be reduced by up to 16% for a small load, and increases for large loads. Managing Director, Euroline (UK importer of BORA and Falmec)
The fact that eco appliances have these two major benefits to the consumer, make them an incredibly popular choice in today’s modern kitchen which it seems is destined to grow. In terms of specific products, Italian cooker hood producer Falmec has adapted the design of its bestselling Mirabilia range to include an LED lighting system. The energy saving LED lights not only replace the previous halogen downlights but also the internal incandescent light bulbs responsible for the ambient lighting of the glass extractors. The energy saved by this change of lighting system is enormous. For example, the halogen lighting system previously featured on a 67cm wall mounted Mirabilia used 140W of power whilst the new LED system on the same model uses a miniscule 5W of power – a massive reduction of 96%. Meanwhile, BORA’s worktop extractor system works more effectively than common extractor hoods, because it does not work with the volume of the air (m3/h), but rather with the speed of the air. Air rises at a rate of 1 metre per second and the BORA extractor draws vapour downwards at 4 metres per second at optimum speed, creating a crossflow greater than the speed the air raises. Our eco-friendly products have been the most successful in the last year and it is clear that consumers are more concerned with energy efficiency than ever before. There are a wealth of emerging technologies which are making kitchen appliances more efficient, including increased capacities, flexible controls and advanced systems which are making appliance operation less energy-hungry. Obviously the functions which are having the greatest impact on making appliances energy efficient varies depending on appliance. For example, in dishwashing our 3D dishwasher offers 35% more space than a standard 12 place dishwasher, meaning that each wash cleans more dishes – saving water and energy. Across all of our appliances we are constantly working on offering more eco-friendly settings and some of the technologies we have introduced have been really revolutionary. The All in One washing machine for example is available up to an 11kg capacity. Because it safely mixes whites and coloured fabrics together in one wash, this appliance makes one wash per week a reality. The Mintel Washers and Dryers Report 2012 highlights an influx in the number of buyers concerned with the energy ratings of appliances, with 74% now saying an appliance with an energy rating of A+ is essential. This research strongly correlates we have had of the market over the last 12 months. The research also shows that 60% of respondents say a water-saving mode is crucial to any appliance purchase, while 37% plan to purchase an energy-efficient appliance this year.

Senior Product Manager Laundry, Bosch The most significant development in the laundry sector has been increasing energy efficient appliances such as A+++ washing machines and even our heat pump dryers. One of the most important developments has been the introduction of the self-cleaning heat exchanger, as this ensures that the level of energy efficiency stays the same and does not reduce in efficiency over time unlike standard exchangers that need cleaning. Because of this, it will continue to stay at maximum efficiency throughout the life of the product delivering savings year after year – something which is extremely important to users, especially with the increase in water and energy costs. Our washing machines deliver big energy savings but also come with unique technology which also offer water savings. Many have ActiveWater technology which means that for every load, the water usage is accurately calculated on an infinite curve meaning never too much and never too little. Our unique air condensation washer dryers deliver drying programmes that do not use water during the drying cycle unlike other washer dryers on the market. The latest Bosch iDos washing machine also has an intelligent dosing system which offers a perfect performance and saves on water and detergent. The automatic programmes take the guesswork out of the washing process by using a load calculation, checking fabric type and soiling level which ultimately decides the amount of detergent, number of rinses and length of wash.
Andrew Wasdell Product Manager, Food Preservation, Electrolux Major Appliances
Changes in 2012 due to new energy legislation saw refrigeration models upgraded from A to A+ energy class. Increasing use of LED lighting is one small area that helps consume less energy; LED lights last longer, give out less heat and produce a brighter light than standard bulbs. The last couple of years have also seen a greater emphasis on touch control electronics. Customers are now used to touch technology on their iPads/phones etc and this technology is being introduced in the controls of refrigeration. Touch control technology – supported by sophisticated software – ensures that the cooling system within the fridge freezer is precise. Although these models are pricier, food stays fresh for longer and energy consumption is reduced. People are becoming more aware of the amount of food that they throw away and the rising cost of food. Latest WRAP statistics say that the average consumer throws away 33% of the food that they buy. This is a huge amount – both in terms of money and resources used in food production. Cooling models with humidity controlling technology are available in either A+ or A++ energy rated models. Controlling humidity levels in the fridge ensures that food does not dry out thereby staying fresher for longer so less food is wasted. Electrolux | www.electrolux.co.uk

Appliances that are energy efficient will always be high on consumers’ lists so the challenge for manufacturers is to make greener appliances that don’t compromise on performance. Laundry appliances will still need to clean and care for clothes, and dishwashers will still need to get rid of baked-on food.
Rising energy costs have made consumers much more aware of the benefits of energy saving appliances. Well publicised figures on annual running costs have made buyers think hard about the value of A+ rated cooling but one thing consumers don’t seem to consider so much is water. It isn't the water bill that causes the pain – it is the cost of heating it in a dishwasher or washing machine. Reducing the amount of water needed for a wash in either appliance reduces energy costs and is also environmentally responsible.
Brand Director, Hotpoint
Consequently, we’re now seeing washing machines and tumble dryers with energy ratings up to A+++, washing machines with specialist eco programmes and dryers that combine advanced energy saving heat pump technology with sensor drying so the appliance stops when clothes are dry. Recent legislation means that washing machines are now required to have 20 degree cycles to encourage consumers to reduce energy consumption during washes. Manufacturers will need to look at the technology and systems on the machines to make sure these low temperature cycles actually perform efficiently, rather than simply being a ‘box ticking’ exercise. With dishwashing, technology is still making strides in energy efficiency, with systems like Hotpoint’s patented fan drying system that removes the need for the final, super hot rinse. Even in cooking – a category that’s not traditionally thought of as being particularly energy efficient – innovation is playing its part in making something as basic as boiling a pan an energy efficient exercise. For example, Hotpoint’s Luce gas hobs have award-winning patented direct flame burners that give the widest possible heating surface for faster and more even cooking, and saves 20% time and energy compared to standard burners. We all know that energy efficient appliances cost less to run, help to reduce wastage and are less harmful to the environment. It’s a misconception that large refrigeration units use more energy. In fact, some of the roomiest, use less energy than a 100 watt light bulb! With clever engineering such as a Dual Compressor or Air Purification Systems (based on technology developed for NASA), plus Adaptive Defrost Technology, even the largest fridge/freezers can be highly efficient these days. Food lasts longer, thereby reducing waste, which results in a reduction of shopping trips, which is good news all round! When selecting cooking appliances, specifiers should look for single spark ignition gas burners which ensure that energy is not wasted on unused burners. Dual stacked, sealed gas burners offer unbeatable temperature control from the lowest melting and simmering settings to ultra-fast boiling. An auto re-ignite function ensures safety and energy efficiency, so that no cooking time is lost if the gas flame is accidentally extinguished by a gust of wind from an open door or window. Finally, look for appliances that are built to last, not to be used as land-fill in a few years. A wellmade, quality appliance should last on average 22 years or more and should become part of the family, taken with you when you move house and becoming the heart of the home. Flexible Formula Smart lighting and a multi-layered design concept give this bespoke kitchen a highly individual look
It can be a real challenge to come up with a kitchen design that reflects the personality of its owner, especially in a busy family home where household moods and uses are likely to change several times a day. The answer is of course, to create a highly versatile space that can adapt to suit the constantly changing domestic environment. Now if only that was as easy to do as it is to say.
first impression and become the defining feature of this new build property. There was a clear ‘wish list’ for the kitchen space. It had to be easy to use and child friendly. A family dining table for four had to be included, in addition to a coffee/wine area for socialising. There also needed to be lots of worktop space and an overall design with an edgy and contemporary look.
The brief for this home was to design a highly functional, family friendly kitchen that would provide a dramatic
There were plenty of other issues to consider for kitchen designer Darren Morgan of Designer Kitchen
in Armagh, Northern Ireland. He explains: “The build was well underway by the time the clients approached me which meant that the underfloor heating and floor had been finished without provision being made for services. This meant that a detached island was not an option as power and water needed to be integrated into the kitchen design so that the expansive floor space could be utilised.” “The clients were clear that they wanted something really different but unsure

about what they actually wanted. They had warned me that they were always polarised when it came to style choices and to expect bickering!” says Morgan. This was brought into focus with the realisation that one party liked a linear look, the other liked curves. This inconsistency within the brief became an inspiration for the design. A layered approach was taken with kitchen function laying the foundation to the design. Aesthetics, sociability, entertainment and other functional i www.designerkbmag.co.uk www.kb-network.co.uk

layers where then introduced to create a complex blend of practicality and style. At the heart of the design is a broad range of bespoke elements. For example, all of the curved doors and cabinetry were made to the exact curvature required. The doors were made 25mm thick to provide a quality feel and were angled along the top to allow for handless opening. They were custom sprayed in a satin finish in the colour of the client’s choice. The drum units or ‘pods’ are positioned along key entry sightlines which help to increase the aesthetic impact for the viewer upon entering the room either from the rear of the building or from the front entrance hallway. These pods allow the front of the island to become functionally segmented into social zones; one for family dining and another for socialising with friends. The pods are elevated and become a natural area for serving drinks and snacks. The position and elevated dimensions of the centre pod also helps to camouflage the sink area from view when approaching from the front entrance hallway. The pods were designed to contradict the contemporary design and to
provide a showcase for traditional cabinet making, so they were made with traditional frames and given handles. The centre panels on these doors were finished in a custom aubergine lacquer to create a visual bridge between old and new styles. Quartz worktops were used throughout. “Due to the size of the peninsula, worktop joints were inevitable,” says Morgan. “In order to minimise the impact of the joints, a serving trench was introduce. This broke the joint and provided a handy area to store utensils, cookery books and worktop clutter.” In order to deliver a versatile and dramatic first impression, a dropped ceiling was created which mirrored the physical shape of the island below. Morgan says: “No provision had been made for any island services so this dropped ceiling provided the space needed to fit a ceiling extractor and ducting. This allowed the hob to be positioned directly on the social interface of the kitchen and placed the cook in the centre of the action.” Deep drawers and an open worktop area were positioned at the window area for the storage of consumable items and to provide a secondary preparation
area. “This preparation area is important as it allows for discreet food preparation when guests are floating around,” Morgan explains. The client was concerned that this area could look bland and almost appear like an afterthought. In order to make this area interesting it was given a floating appearance and fitted with mirrors and lighting to provide continuity with the rest of the design. Functional and ambient lighting was introduced at floor and ceiling level so that the client could control the mood of the space. Achieving ergonomic efficiency and visual satisfaction on every level was the ultimate aim for this scheme. Morgan said: “The design is founded upon providing a personally oriented functional solution for this family unit and I have used this functional cornerstone to support the layers of sociability, aesthetics, personal style, entertainment and holistic design. “This design is important to me as it has provided a rare opportunity to see what is possible.” i Designer Kitchen | www.designer-kitchen.com

Bathroom Secrets 48

Amid speculation and cliché about how the bathroom has become a haven for wellness, Ideal Standard set up a study to find out exactly how we use this most private of domestic spaces…
For most people, it is a sanctuary from which even partners and family members are excluded. And yet, for two weeks earlier this year, 19 people in four countries agreed to let Ideal Standard track their every brush, splash and flush in the name of research. Prototype motion mapping technology was installed in bathrooms across Europe to monitor bathroom behaviours. By adapting depth sensors to provide accurate 3D tracking of the human body and using two sensors in each bathroom, the research has been able to build a detailed picture of how people actually use their bathroom space. The findings – supplemented with quantitative data gathered from 4,000 people – were revealed recently at ISH 2013 in Frankfurt and published in a
paper entitled Bathroom Behaviours: How to Optimise Bathroom Space for Modern Households.
Bright, Chief Marketing Officer of Ideal Standard International. “The findings seem to confirm what we suspected.
Behind the data lie some interesting glimpses into family life: the parents who seek refuge from their families with long baths and showers; the bathrooms that double up as laundries and dressing rooms; the flatmates forced to do their ablutions in unison.
“Renovating a bathroom often starts with excitement and ends in disappointment. It’s hard to know where to start and harder to see past the limitations of the room.”
According to the findings, 40% of us crave a new bathroom, but interestingly, for the most part, it’s not a bigger space that we lust after, just a space that better meets our needs.
Families from Germany, France, Italy and the UK participated in the study, representing a variety of households, from single occupancy to multigenerational homes. The families agreed to let their every movement in the bathroom be captured, analysed and scrutinised.
“We started with a hypothesis that in many homes the bathroom is not used as well as it could be,” said Kerris
The results of the quantitative and qualitative studies will be analysed over the coming months but already some

fascinating insights are emerging which Ideal Standard hopes will help its design teams innovate for the future. “We conducted the study because our product range spans every aspect of bathroom design,” said Kerris Bright. “We’ve always tried to understand how a bathroom works in totality and to think about the ergonomics of the bathroom to help our customers get the most out of their bathroom experience.” According to the report’s author, social anthropologist Dr John Curran, the bathroom is a unique space in the home that stands out because it has to meet an array of needs. “It’s a room that transforms us from one state of mind to another and can therefore mark different personas
we have throughout the day. These transformational characteristics mean that the bathroom is embedded in everyday rituals – rituals that help define who we are.
Different needs
“However, the design of bathrooms – the storage, fittings, aesthetic and the variation in size – means that meeting all the needs of household members becomes a challenge, all the more so in light of rapid demographic change which is seeing a rise in single person, all adult and multi-generational households and households with older people.” For each of the bathrooms in the motion mapping study, Ideal Standard has set about creating a ‘profile bathroom’ based on insights gathered, each of which it believes can be considered a
useful starting point when designing bathrooms for different needs. The profile bathrooms have been developed by Robin Levien, an award winning designer and non-executive Design Director for Ideal Standard. Levien used the brand’s full product offering to create spaces which meet the needs of the different types of household in the study. “It was important to have a multifunctional approach to the products we recommended in each of the bathrooms,” said Levien. “Based on the household make up, coupled with their individual preferences, we selected a range of Ideal Standard products to offer a complete solution. To borrow from Le Corbusier’s famous quote ‘a bathroom is a machine for living in’ so we made them more liveable.” i Ideal Standard | www.ideal-standard.co.uk

Safe and Simple
Installing baths that meet thermostatic safety requirements can all too often mean a compromise in performance or aesthetics. A new product launched this month claims to solve the problem with a UK product that meets specific UK needs

It’s not that often in product development terms where aesthetics play second fiddle to more practical concerns. Does this make the end product any less glamorous or worthy? Paul Illingworth, Design Manager at Abode, says: “We hope not, but we do understand that it makes it harder to explain to your customer and ensure that the thinking behind the product and price elements are understood. It all means that sometimes, the technical advantages can be a little more difficult to convey.” This perhaps applies to Abode’s new Tempeau product which will be launched at kbb LDN this month. The concept was born partially from legal changes to thermostatic bathing safety in Part G building regulations introduced in 2010 and partially from conversations with both the public and installers. Thermostatic showers have been increasing in popularity in the UK for some time, but when new bathing thermostatic regulations came into force there were (and still remain) very few options available.
Time and Complexity
Of course, a ‘standard’ (non thermostatic) bath tap can be connected to a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV), but as the hot water is pre-mixed, the cold half of the tap becomes effectively redundant, thus reducing the flow rate and the bath water cools quicker whilst it’s still filling. An alternative – although not a perfect solution – would be to use a concealed two exit thermostatic shower control, one exit for the shower, one for the bath. As a solution this works, but what if the wall is external or the bath is freestanding? Not to mention the time and complexity of mounting such products in a wall then tiling around them. Finally, there is also the issue of high pressure, wall mounted thermostatic bath shower mixers, often found in chain hotels. These European style products are designed to be installed on a wall, as they would be in mainland Europe. When these products are
installed in the UK they are often adapted with ‘elbow’ inlet legs to enable them to be mounted on a bath deck, placing them artificially forwards. “How many showers do you need to take with a spout protruding in the small of your back to appreciate this doesn’t work!” asks Illingworth.
51
pg
He adds that Abode’s Tempeau offers a genuine solution to the problem. It is a UK designed product for UK style deck mounted baths, for UK water pressures and meeting UK building regulations. “The flexibility of the Tempeau system allows for a mix-and-match approach to any bath or showering configuration. Whilst all the clever stuff is hidden away under the bath, the only thing the customer sees is the minimal, unobtrusive controls design co-ordinated to any group of bathroom tap family styles. For retailers, a number of typical packs have been created to cover everyday situations.”
Flow Performance
The heart of the concept is the Tempeau thermostatic valve design which has been created with some key criteria in mind. Firstly, it ensures thermostatic safety is delivered to both bathing and showering experiences. It gets the best possible flow performance from the UK’s notoriously low pressure hot water systems.
Above: Drawing of Tempeau product Below: Example of Tempeau in typical bath set-up
The system is also significantly faster and easier to install and maintain compared to existing wall mounted solutions – Tempeau is connected to the underside because in the UK, supply pipes come out of the floor. Last but not least, the big objective for Abode’s in-house design team was to create something that was intrinsically simple to understand and use. “It is a harder path to look around you and wonder about improving the established status quo. We hope with Tempeau we won’t be alone in wondering why it wasn’t always done this way.”i Abode | www.abode.eu www.kb-network.co.uk

International recognition – and a trip to the States – is the reward for the regional winners of the Sub Zero & Wolf Kitchen Design Contest…
The regional winners of Sub Zero & Wolf’s 2010-12 Kitchen Design Contest have been announced, with two designers from the UK & Europe section jetting off to the final in Wisconsin, USA later this year. In front of a packed audience of finalists and other guests at the Sub Zero & Wolf Subterranean Studio in London’s Brompton Road, the results were revealed by food writer Tom Parker-Bowles.
Divided into two sections – contemporary and traditional – Davy Swanenberg won the contemporary category for his striking modern professional kitchen design. Meanwhile, former Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Award winner Jane Stewart won the traditional section for a bright and spacious reconfiguration. The winners now go through to the final, with the chance to win a top prize
of $40,000. As well as the main prizes, there is also a designers’ choice and a peoples’ choice award. The contest is open to anyone working with Sub Zero & Wolf products, including kitchen retailers, kitchen designers, architects, interior designers and builders or developers. CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN DAVY SWANENBERG CULIMAAT KITCHENS Davy Swanenberg, of Culimaat Kitchens in the Netherlands, was tasked with coming up with a semi-professional kitchen that made the most of the atmospheric space, including prominent wooden beams. The contemporary style is built around the Wolf range and Sub Zero fridges.
Swanenberg says: “I started with an empty space, which featured prominent old wooden beams. That was the stage for what had to be a semi-professional kitchen; the client’s requirements with respect to the appliances were very clear. They had to be as professional as possible. This is why the Wolf range was selected, for its iconic red controls and the heavy cast iron grates. “The kitchen measurements are
based on the dimensions of the range, hence the shape of the worktop’s edge. The warming drawer dictated the size of the drawers in the island, and led to our choice for using matte marble. Matte marble is easily cut in different thicknesses and perfect to create a uniform and robust look between the warming drawer and furniture fronts. “The Sub-Zero fridges finish the semi-professional atmosphere, thanks to their stainless steel counterpoint to the rough materials. I searched for contrasting materials on purpose, making sure they share the same colour palette. The result is this kitchen, a sleek industrial look with plenty of light and spaciousness.” Culimaat Kitchens | www.culimaat.nl

Jane Stewart of Mowlem & Co opened up the original house layout of restricted doorways and multiple smaller rooms to create a grand space with a glass conservatory to the rear. The bright and elegant design makes the most of the space with the Sub-Zero appliances acting as a bold centrepiece within the classic shaker style kitchen furniture. “The simplified entrance area to the china room gave a clean flow from main kitchen area past the glass and crockery store from the main kitchen. The addition to this character period property of the glass cube conservatory was
planned to enhance the light and feel of the room as well as marry the two styles of classic and contemporary. “The emphasis was to still keep the kitchen as somewhere the whole family could eat and relax – the generous table perfect for entertaining with stunning views looking out on the Surrey countryside. “Elegant lighting in hand crafted white glass pendant lamps over the island kept the contemporary feel, whilst plinth lighting added a soft and welcoming feel as night draws in.” Mowlem & Co | www.mowlemandco.com

The Farmiloe Building, a former Victorian merchants’ warehouse, will play host to high-profile international brands; The House of Detention, a subterranean Victorian prison, will form the festival’s hotspot for new designers; and the 12th century crypt and garden of the Priory of the Order of St John, will act as the hub for interior decoration trends. Showroom highlights will include Domus Tiles which will see the launch of Patricia Urquiola’s new Azulej tile range, furniture brand Vitra who will play host to a seminar session with designer Ronan Bouroullec, whilst Italian brand Arper is a newcomer to the Clerkenwell scene, having recently opened the largest showroom in the area, a striking space designed by 6a Architects. There will also be a number of key show trends to look out for, with organisers promising much to see in the fields of innovative lighting, statement surfaces, as well as simple and natural designs. i Clerkenwell Design Week takes place 21-23 May 2013 at various venues around Clerkenwell, London EC1 (www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com) www.designerkbmag.co.uk www.kb-network.co.uk

Designing for the Senses Creating a kitchen that meets the user’s needs can be made easier by paying close attention to some basic human attributes says Belinda Dangerfield, Director of In-toto Kitchens Birmingham
Designing a kitchen is never just about placing the right sized units in a convenient place. For most designers it is an intuitive process that uses their listening skills to find out what it is the customer wants and their own design skills. Following the four senses of sight, touch, sound and taste is always a good place to start.
Sight
The overall visual impact is important and mixing different sized units adds interest and variety. For example a tall bank, whilst it can be a very strong feature may also block light and be very dominant; consider demi-height units so that peripheral vision when walking into a room is not impeded. Customers will respond in different ways to how balanced the kitchen is in terms of sizes of units so it is important to determine if it is symmetry or asymmetry that they prefer.
Touch
Texture is a big trend in kitchens at the moment and there is a wealth of options for mixing textures in the kitchen such as combining gloss with matt fronts to give a very urban feel. On work surfaces, experiment with thickness as well as surface structure – try the smooth finish of Corian, suede finish on quartz or sandblasted wood.
56
pg
Sound
Open plan and living kitchens are very much in demand. The importance of reduced sound is especially critical in these circumstances and it is essential to help customers select appliances with low decibel ratings.
Taste
Many customers are overwhelmed by the choice of cooking appliances. With options such as steam ovens, induction hobs and professional systems such as sous vide all now available, it is essential to tap into workshops and demonstrations so customers can understand the capabilities of different methods. i
Top State-of-the-art appliances bring a sense of the professional kitchen into the domestic home Above Mixing textures can achieve a rich environment for the senses. The kitchen shown features gloss fronts, printed glass, chrome accessories, Corian worktops, and exposed oak beams

Design Classic
Our monthly spotlight on the iconic ideas that have shaped kitchen and bathroom design
KV1 by Arne Jacobsen for Vola
Arne Jacobsen’s design influence on the projects he worked on was total. The Danish architect wanted to have absolute control of a project and nothing was to be left to chance, so he made it his job to focus on the details of his buildings. This led to the design of a series of products of such high quality that although they were developed in conjunction with specific building projects, they had universal application that made them feasible for standard production. Jacobsen’s designs comprise a wide assortment of items such as furniture, textiles, lighting fixtures, door handles, cutlery, stainless steel tableware, glassware, clocks, taps and accessories. His KV1 tap design for Vola epitomised his simple, streamlined design style. The fact that it still looks as sleek and modern today as it did when Jacobsen created it in 1968 speaks volumes about the purity of its design. It also created a design image from which all of Vola’s products have spawned throughout the 45 years since. It is perhaps best summed up by former Vola Managing Director Carsten Overgaard – who sadly died earlier this year – when he said: “Design classics are the proof of the lasting values of good design.” i Vola | www.vola.com
