And a cuckoo clock.

The difference is Gaggenau. In the Black Forest, some things never change – others have been evolving since 1683. Innovation has become a tradition for us ever since our company was founded as a hammer and nail works, along with unique design that is highly regarded the world over. Such as the ovens 400 series, shown here with oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer – a combination that unites cutting-edge technology and premium materials with super ior design. Our appliances have been constantly evolving since 1683. The only thing that stays the same is that they just keep looking better and better. This bathroom, designed by interior architect Thomas Griem, enjoys a spectacular view over the city of London. It is the ensuite to the master bedroom in a penthouse apartment in Aldgate and the capacious free standing bathtub by Clearwater Baths is strategically placed under the picture window. “When you are sitting in the bath, you are essentially a part of the cityscape” says Griem. “The bath weighs 300 kilograms and it took six men to carry it up seven floors!” TG Studio | www.tg-studio.co.uk

Her critically acclaimed works in the UK include the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics and the Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton, the Riverside Museum in Glasgow and the Maggie’s Centre in Kirkcaldy. In 2004, she became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious prize in architecture. Books

Designing With Black by Stephen Crafti | The Images Publishing Group | Price: £35 | ISBN: 978 1 8647 04853

If you have a dark side, the chances are there will be something to grab your attention in this collection of 30 striking projects featuring black architecture and interior design from some of today’s leading residential architects. The author Stephen Crafti has always been drawn to black houses, irrespective of the materials they are constructed in, be they zinc, timber or simply painted. He believes that unlike most houses, which scream for attention, black houses sit quietly, accentuating the often-verdant landscape. There is also a sense of calm and

tranquillity with a black home. The book is organised according to a series of themes, including: Black Exteriors; Living in Black; Details of Black; Kitchens & Dining in Black; and In Black And White. The author takes the reader on a journey, illustrating the many aspects of building, designing and furnishing with black throughout all aspects of the home. Architects featured include David Eldeman, Fabre/deMarien, Muir Mendes and Nord Arcitecture, who designed the black house, known as ‘Shingle House’, in Dungeness on the south-east coast of England.

Q - How do you charge for your design services? Do customers expect to get your design expertise for free when they buy product from you? How can kitchen and bathroom studios ensure their customers recognise the importance and the true value of design skills?

the big question

Annette Croshaw, Independent Bathroom Designer, Cambridge:

I have been designing bathrooms for many years and worked for companies who provided a ‘complete service’. These companies offered a free design service to drum up business and very often the customer was only interested in the free design and not purchasing the complete design, product supply and installation service as this seemed very expensive to them. Because of this, I feel that customers do not value a good design as it has always been seen as a ‘freebie’. I have now broken away from working for a company and I am in the throes of offering a design service only and will charge an hourly rate as interior designers do. A beautiful bathroom does not just ‘happen’. It’s all in the design, choosing fantastic products including tiles and lighting and above all, you have to work to suit every budget – working closely with customers to get it right and to create their dream bathroom. The design is just as important as the products and the expert installation.

Designer Think Tank 154.indd 18

Darrel Durose, Designer, M&S Interiors, Nottingham:

I often think that as a designer we should be paid for the work we do for a customer. Payment only comes my way if a customer orders a kitchen or bedroom. Some are just "tyre kickers" that think all we do is press a button and the computer does it for us/them. This is not true, well, not for me anyway...

Stephen Flewitt, Proprietor, 1st Bathrooms & Kitchens, Nottingham:

In the UK, few private clients will pay for interior design and especially bathrooms and kitchens. Why? Because too many showrooms do it free! I work as an interior designer but provide the complete package that includes design and install. You can put a value on good design but how do you make the step change from ‘free of charge’ to funded – that’s the issue that really needs addressing. How many potential clients would you lose when you ask a fee? 90% plus?

Nugent was the man responsible for everything from customer relationships to the look of the Games. He built a database of 5.5 million, turned volunteers into Gamesmakers and coined the phrase ‘Inspire a Generation’.

Since the current management team took over the business in December 2011, the business has seen a 35% increase in export sales and orders on top of growing domestic figures.

ALNO Contracts has launched nine new displays in its exclusive kitchen showroom. Having previously just displayed ALNO and Impuls products, the newly designed showroom in Sevenoaks now houses 17 beautiful kitchen displays with the addition of Pino and Wellman, showcasing products from all four groups to demonstrate the company’s wider product offering. The showroom features a mixture of handleless units, stone worktops, detailed lighting, colour mixing and a wide range of appliances.

Dean Williams, Contracts Director, ALNO, says: “The new showroom means we can exhibit all our ranges and the many suppliers we work with. We have a vast product wall where we present customers with every type of unit we have and being able to see, touch and feel units will allow our customers to make the right choice.” Founded in 1985, Simon Taylor Furniture eschews glitzy high street outlets in favour of a down-to-earth showroom, design studio and workshop in rural Buckinghamshire that has become something of a destination showroom for those seeking the quiet, understated luxury and attention to detail that has become the company’s signature. Simon Taylor, Managing Director of Simon Taylor Furniture, says: “I’d like to think we define ourselves by making the kitchen or bathroom buying experience come alive for people. We’re now at the point where the children of our original customers are buying their first ‘serious’ kitchens, bedrooms or bathrooms from us, and there’s a reason for that. Most customers don’t happen upon us – we tend to be a destination for people – and we capitalise upon that. “We make it experiential from the off. It might be scribbling roughs with one of our designers, creating a mood board, cooking drop scones with Debs or maybe spending some time in the workshop. The fact that the showroom is really just a doorway into the Simon Taylor experience makes us pretty unusual and is probably worth 10 glossy, yet sterile, high street showrooms.”

With flexibility, looks and convenience all big priorities in the kitchen, the latest sink and tap offerings have evolved to deliver the right mix of style and functionality… Franke's Sinos SNX 251 stainless steel sink

As the kitchen fixtures that we come into daily contact with more than any other, it’s fair to say that choosing the right sink and tap configuration is one of the most important specifying decisions to make. Left to their own devices, homeowners will often choose something very similar to what they have previously experienced – the comfort of familiarity is still as big an attraction as ever in so many aspects of kitchen and bathroom design after all. However, the range of available products has opened up so many new possibilities that it’s worth devoting some extra time to the process of choosing the right sink and tap combination for a kitchen project. Of course, the first task in narrowing down the choices is determining the style route that the kitchen will be taking.

Style Selection

So what are the latest customer preferences? Are homeowners leaning towards traditional, modern or a combination of the two? “We are noticing that consumers are moving to a mixed design position,” says Darren Holliday, Director at Abode. “It’s about classic themes represented in a modern way, for instance our Brompton range of architecturally styled taps with tall swan necks. So, in effect, a combination. “Contemporary designs with flashes of colours are also becoming increasingly popular. Our Triana tap for example, is finished with a black stripe around the centre of the tap which, when twisted, brings the filter water into play.”

He adds that modern, slimline taps and taps which lean forward into the sink are also selling extremely well, like the Verso and new Linear Flair taps that Abode have recently launched. “Contemporary is still the dominant style, with polished chrome still the most popular surface finish,” says Martin Mongan, Head of National Sales at Hansgrohe. “With lots of budding amateur chefs, functionality has increased in importance in the kitchen environment. Customers are looking for swivel spouts, wallmounted mixers which keep the sink area completely clear, easy-to-use levers which can be used with one finger or a nudge of the arm and pull-out sprayers. This is ideal for rinsing vegetables and salad leaves and for also reaching across single or double sinks as it allows the user greater freedom of movement around the sink area.” David Dare, Managing Director of Shaws of Darwen, believes that having a broad product offering is vital in a market that has to meet demand for both modern and traditionally-styled products: “With the renovation and refacing of homes occurring more and more, householders are still tending to stay put in their existing properties and are updating their kitchens to look different, as if they were in a new property. Our ranges cover both contemporary and traditionally styled fireclay sinks which

have never been ‘out of vogue’ and as a consequence, we have seen an upsurge in sales.” A kitchen sink is expected to be as stylish as it is practical. It is portrayed as a design statement in its own right, rather than just a necessary component within the layout of a kitchen as the models available are sleeker and more sophisticated than ever before. Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager at Astracast, says that material choices are playing a big part here. “Materials such as glass and stainless steel are now being combined to create a contemporary, designer sink that blends effortlessly with stone and granite worktops and modern high gloss cabinets. Whereas ceramic has previously been associated with traditional, farmhouse style sinks, manufacturers are now experimenting with using this material across contemporary designs too.” The role of the sink has also been transformed and no longer is it used just to do the washing up. The market now offers multifunctional designs that act as a complete work station. Accessories such as chopping boards that fit the sink and conceal the bowl are now offered as optional extras. Mulready adds: “This not only allows the sink to have a discreet, seamless appearance, but also provides additional work space, which is ideal for compact kitchens.” Linear styling has long dominated the sink scene but there is now a move towards softer, more organic shapes with curved corners on the sink

footprint as well as the bowl and drainer detailing, according to Franke’s Marketing Manager Steve Rutter. “As open plan living takes stronger hold in the UK, the general form of the kitchen is for sleek yet fluid lines which create an easy-living, relaxed feel.” He adds that Franke’s Sinos range, which launched earlier this year, features curvy styling yet echoes the contemporary desire for pure design too. “It is an example of how the trend towards softer minimalism is influencing sink design now. It’s a contemporary classic, a sink style that’s very easy to live with, paying homage to current design trends for curves but one that will not easily date either. It gives retailers a new design story to engage customers with and has the design benefit of working across all kitchen styles.”

Functional Thinking

As with most aspects of kitchen design, flexibility has become one of the most important factors. Gary Dart, Managing Director of Duravit UK, says: “The best new design options for sinks are those that offer the customer flexibility so that the sink can be tailored to the individual. For example, there are new sink designs on the market now that can be fitted with a right- or left-handed bowl because the axial layout of the tap, overflow and pop-up waste control means that the sink is reversible. There are designs with large-scale sink dimensions with virtually equal spaces for the sink and the draining area or a large spacious bowl with an additional small waste bowl. “Colour is an important consideration too,” he says. “Gone are the days when a kitchen sink was either stainless steel or white ceramic, now there are many shades to choose from through creams and browns to black, including contemporary matt shades. Also, the latest design and technology offers material for coloured sinks that is impact and scratch resistant, durable and easy to clean to cope with constant tough kitchen use.” i www.kb-network.co.uk

Convenience on Tap

Of course, one hot topic (excuse the pun) for this area of the kitchen is the hot water tap. It is a market that has stirred up significant customer interest over the last couple of years and the signs are that it represents huge growth potential in the future. Neil Clark, Marketing Director for Carron Phoenix, says: “In the Netherlands, there are 8 million homes and 40% of the kitchens have a boiling water tap. We have nowhere near that sort of percentage in the UK and there are 25 million houses here, so it’s all to play for. “Filter taps started out as niche products but have quickly been adopted by mainstream consumers and boiling water taps will go exactly the same way. The genie is out of the bottle now and more manufacturers are launching models to capture some market share – we have just joined in with our

new Seraphina tap launching at the beginning of last month.”

beyond offering a simple drinks station, it is now a life changing solution.”

Nick Taylor, Sales Director at Zip Heaters UK, agrees that there is significant potential for the product category and argues that the market for instant boiling water taps is tapping into more than just the provision of water. “We have seen significant adaptations in the market since the introduction of our iconic HydroTap a decade ago. Now seen by many homeowners as the ‘must have’ kitchen appliance, an instant boiling and chilled filtered water tap is an effective way to add value to a property.

Ashley Munden, European Managing Director at InSinkErator, suggests that style-wise, the choice between a traditional or modern hot water tap is dependent very much on the current style of the kitchen. “For those consumers that dream of a large, country-style kitchen, a traditional tap would most likely be the design of choice. However, for consumers with kitchens that boast a seamlessly built-in range of appliances with the latest clever technology, then a modern hot water tap will add an extra degree of luxury.”

“As a nation we are more technologically advanced than ever before, regarding multifunctional appliances as an integral part of our lives. This thinking has never been truer than in the kitchen, we have seen a rise in homeowners who want to install our products because they go

Intergrated filtration too has gained much ground in recent times. “Filtration has become a key trend, with consumers enjoying the idea of having purified water in their kitchens literally on tap,” explains David Cole, Sales Director at Perrin & Rowe. i

“The fact that the overwhelming majority of designs offer filtration within one brassware product increases their appeal as it eliminates the need for a separate filtered water source. We expect this type of product to remain consistently popular in the coming months as the idea gains momentum.”

Flexibility is King

Darren Peake, Senior Category Manager for Built-in at Hotpoint, says that sink manufacturers have had to evolve to a point where they offer a multitude of products to suit varied lifestyle requirements: “The contemporary kitchen is very much the focal point in a modern home, so sleek lines, cool surfaces, and co-ordination are high on the list for home owners. With this in mind, the days of ‘one style fits all’ sinks are long gone, with a choice of hi-tech products with finishes to match now available to the design

conscious consumer. “Composite sinks like the ones in Hotpoint’s minimalist, Italian inspired Luce collection are as eye catching as they are practical, with dirt repellent, scratchproof surfaces that easily take the rigours of everyday use.” Stuart White, Managing Director at Bushboard, also sees design choice as an increasingly influential market driver. “As the solid surface market matures, undermounted sinks in stainless steel have become the mainstream look, albeit a very stylish one. For an alternative, arguably higher design look, integrally moulded sinks offer a very pure design aesthetic as they form a seamless flow between the sink and the worksurface and fit especially well with the desire for sleek lines in open plan living.” “Integral sinks are typically associated with a top end look because of the fabrication expense involved but advances in material technology and

installation methods have now opened up this style of sink to a wider audience with more accessible pricing.” Paul Scarborough, Product Manager for Rangemaster Sinks & Taps, points out that some of the sink trends that have emerged in recent years are closely linked to fundamental changes in the way that today’s kitchen is used so differently by householders. Sink shape preferences have evolved significantly for example. “Round sinks offer certain advantages, but can be seen as under-utilising space, where the more geometric shapes use every available inch of space in and underneath the worktop,” he says. “Corner sinks were popular some time ago, but more recently have declined due to changing preferences in consumer living, where the kitchen becomes the ‘hub’ of the home, and standing in the corner washing up is much less desirable.” i

He adds that multi-bowl configurations can take advantage of the wide range of accessories that are available now. “Draining baskets which fit into the sink can create a draining area for a double bowl product, whilst strainer bowls which fit perfectly into the half bowls can add an extra dimension, offering food draining in perfect space-saving style. Preparation boards made to fit your sink also offer a stylish, space saving and flexible addition to any sink purchase.” Material choices are many and varied as well though. Carron Phoenix’s Clark points out that granite sinks have

enjoyed something of a renaissance thanks to more modern styling and new colours in recent years which have made designers and consumers look at them again with fresh eyes. “Granite is highly rated for its durability and easy maintenance and the material has seen a rise in popularity because it offers a textural contrast and colour alternative to stainless steel,” he says. “Black and graphite grey are the strongest sellers but, just like cars at the moment, there is a strong demand now for white. We have just expanded our popular Samoa range to offer the two sink styles of single and double bowl in

white and that is directly in response to market feedback. “Colour is still in demand and there is also a choice of glass covers now in black, white, vermeer red and lime green. You can go for something a little quirky with the red or green covers, or the white and black provide a purer design aesthetic.” Whatever the colour, the sink and tap will always be about functionality first and foremost. But with such a range of designs and materials to choose from, they still represent a subtle yet potentially pivotal opportunity for adding an extra stylish flourish to the kitchen.i

Ambitious new home building often demands a fair bit of patience, but the owners of this ultra-modernist villa were determined to do everything necessary to bring about success with a project that they hoped would enable them to retain all the luxuries of country living but with a de-cluttered, streamlined lifestyle. The home itself was a long time in the making. The owners had spent quite a while looking for the right plot to build their own home. They eventually found a 1960s bungalow in a good, secluded position in Surrey and set about knocking it

down and building a beautiful modern house on the site. The family previously lived in a very old manor house so their new abode represents a complete change of lifestyle. Key to the overall build was a space that brought the outdoors into the home in a number of ways. The kitchen was an important part of this, with large windows and a free-flowing open design which was created to give a real sense of light and space. The owners chose Chamber Furniture to make this space work, as they knew about the company’s reputation

for bespoke creations. Managing Director Scott Nicholson was tasked with helping to make this house a home, designing and supplying all of the kitchen cabinetry, worktops and appliances, as well as an integrated home office niche in the living area. A minimalist aesthetic style was important throughout and Nicholson used a number of processes to make that happen: “We installed discreet downdraft ventilation to remove clutter from sight lines, and concealed multiple cooling and cooking appliances behind oversized furniture doors and retractable mechanisms to keep cleaner lines. i

CS Designer 154.indd 31

The kitchen features bookmatched American black walnut and a subtle pearlescent mink grey lacquer cabinetry. Polished taupe quartz worktops – similar in tone to the matt floor tiles – and a back-lit opaque glass splashback were all chosen to add some warmth to the space. The design was completed with Gaggenau appliances throughout, as well as a Quooker boiling water tap for convenience – and to remove the need for a clutter-inducing kettle. It is a suitably high specification for a kitchen scheme that had to do justice to the bold modern style of the architecture which envelopes it and which itself has some real stand-out features. Dyer Grimes Architects’ clever design for the house means the first floor appears to ‘hover’ over the kitchen dining area and swimming pool with no visible support columns. It makes for a unique space that has already earned it some out-of-theordinary levels of attention – the property has played host to film crews from a Bollywood film and a pop video.

32

It also boasts impressive green credentials. Great emphasis was placed on constructing the home in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. A tough sustainability target was set; to generate 20 per cent of the energy required by using renewable energy sources. Energy efficiency has been maximised through the incorporation of solar hot water collectors on the roof, a highly sustainable drainage system and an air source heat pump which circulates heat around the entire house. There are also some neat, less obvious touches that set the house apart. As well as a glass sided swimming pool, the laundry chute that runs directly from the bedroom area to the utility room is a nice little practical touch that makes one domestic task that much less hassle. But it’s the kitchen that makes this architectural statement piece a real home. Nicholson says: “The simplicity of form and scale of the installation works well in context with the supersized crisp architecture.” i

When we design a bathroom, we are mindful to consider the longevity of the design. For example, we may not initially include items such as grab rails, but will ensure that such items may be added at a later date should they be required. Many new controls that are being produced are moving towards push buttons; eliminating the need for dials or handles, thus ensuring the product still be usable should the consumers come up against mobility problems in their hands.

The industry has started to see an increase in digital solutions out in the marketplace over the last few years and I only see this trend continuing. We are living in a digital world, with technology constantly surrounding us and impacting on our everyday life, whether that’s how we communicate, work or operate our lives at home. At the moment there are a few specialists with a number of smaller players starting to dip their toes in the water. On a broader level, consumer habits – from a shower perspective – tend to demand a fantastic drenching and refreshing shower, all of which can be delivered in the least possible time. It’s all about performance, ease of use and satisfaction.

Products such as the Aquaclean WC's from Geberit are becoming asked for on a more frequent basis, this gives the customer a ‘paper free’ environment and offers peace of mind for the future with the use of its own remote control to both wash and dry yourself.

Design tastes will always be reflective of the style and age of the home and the interior décor which they will, in most cases, look to complement with their shower control design choice.

Consumers are now looking for showering areas that are as maintenance free as possible, by eliminating hinges, seals and even doors, and replacing them with simple pieces of glass or a tiled wall to walk behind. 90% of our clients are now asking for wet areas rather than the traditional shower enclosure.

TALKING (SHOWER) HEADS

We asked a range of industry experts for their views on how they expect trends in the shower market to shape up in the months and years ahead…

Consumers today are much more savvy about the kind of bathroom they want. Their requirements include topical concerns regarding water and energy efficiency – especially as a new bathroom is viewed as a reasonably long term investment. Bathroom designers should include flow restrictors in taps and showers wherever possible in order to comply with Part G of the building regulations and ensure that their clients can use water efficiently. Other water-saving ideas include taps with a ‘two stage’ cartridge which mean the user can select half flow and waste less water.

In most cases the consumer requests both a fixed overhead and a hand shower to allow for flexibility and practicality as everyone uses the showering area in a different way. And for added comfort, heated seats, floors and walls are being included for that luxurious feel. Ripples | www.ripples.ltd.uk

Bathroom designers should also consider the thermostatic requirements of Part G – and ensure that any shower valves have TMV2 approval – to safeguard against the risk of accidental scalding. This legislation currently applies only to new build homes, but should also be standard practice in any bathroom refurbishment. Another key area of demand is technology – consumers have embraced digital and are willing to pay a little extra to have additional functionality. This can range from mirror cabinets with shaving sockets and Bluetooth connectivity, to remote digital showers with which the user can program their own requirements from another room – making stepping into a cold shower a thing of the past. People are becoming increasingly ambitious when it comes to bathroom design. There is a trend towards fitting more luxurious shower enclosures, allocating more space to create a spa-like atmosphere. Minimal framing and solid glass panels help to bring more space and light into the room. There is now more choice than ever when it comes to shower enclosures – Matki even has a fully bespoke service on its EauZone Plus range, offering tailor made glass panels and doors making the layout possibilities endless.

Digital technology is really in its relatively early stage of development. There is a lot more to be understood about the real user benefits of digital in the shower and for the longer term it is important that it really is more than just a gimmick. We need to understand and define the user benefits of technology in the shower – it needs to be totally intuitive and in tune with how the person uses the shower, allowing complete control and flexibility.

Digital technology remains a huge driver in the development of both shower design and functionality. Digital has already changed the showering experience forever – but the technology refuses to sit still. Most recently, we have seen the advent of digital diverter technology which has been another milestone, giving designers and consumers alike one of the most sophisticated and versatile, yet accessible showering experiences possible.

As we move beyond the basics in temperature, flow and coverage and now into sound and lighting, the future is really in the ability for the shower to sense and learn from different uses and predict what they may want from their shower in terms of experience.

Bathroom designers have become hugely aware of the need to create future proof bathrooms. Showers that can be activated without the user going into the bathroom, LED displays on controls that offer a visual ‘cue’ and showers that can be programmed with multiple combinations of water flow and temperature are all spot-on for the future-forward bathroom. Unsurprisingly, they all have digital technology at their core.

Design Director Matki

Wet room panels and walk-in enclosures continue to be a popular choice due to the accessibility and simple design. Wet room panels are often a good choice when working within a budget and in a smaller space: they present an elegant yet simple divide between shower and bathroom while maintaining that open wet room feel. Walk-in enclosures are often a popular choice for those with young children due to the doorless entry. Matki | www.matki.co.uk

Design Director Methven

Given the average bathroom renovation is approximately every ten years, it is important for designers to develop bathrooms that have longevity and timelessness. By focusing on how people interact in the bathroom space as a whole – which is primarily around the basin/ mirror and shower – designers can then blend the materials, colours and products to create a space with timeless appeal. As a company, we apply our design philosophy to the development of all our ranges to create showers and tapware that are distinctive yet timeless. Methven | www.methven.com/uk

Evolving consumer habits are also critical to shower design. A blend of straitened economic times, the desire to be green, and an ageing population has resulted in demand for showers that can deliver longevity, flexibility in terms of the user’s requirements and water and energy saving options. There’s no doubt that manufacturers have their work cut out, but this is what consumers want – right here, right now – but keeping a keen eye on the future, too. Aqualisa | www.aqualisa.co.uk

Showers don’t have to be inefficient and water-hungry – you can save water by simply changing your showerhead for an eco model and you don’t have to compromise on design or quality.

Increasingly, the design of the brassware will be the factor that wins the day in terms of shower trends, as the shower head serves as a focal point of the modern bathroom, rather than a purely functional product.

Many of our Raindance and Croma shower models – including hand showers, showerpipes and wall and ceiling mounted overhead showers – are offered in a version that incorporates water-saving EcoSmart technology and they look exactly the same as the non-EcoSmart versions. The design is the same and the performance is very good, with water consumption reducing by around half from 18 litres per minute to 9 using AIRPower technology which infuses water with air to give a more voluminous spray and save water.

Shower sets that have a separate hand spray in addition to the main overhead shower are a popular option and are a great space-saving solution in the smaller bathroom. There is a marked trend towards using bold colours in bathroom design and showers offer an ideal way to introduce these in a very stylish way that will turn the shower area into a focal point.

The future is here – iPhone controlled digital showering is so convincing to the consumer, the trend for multi-outlet shower and bath filling in new homes and refits will grow exponentially. The cost is no barrier even in modest budget bathrooms with the investment off set easily by savings in labour, brassware and aesthetics.

Managing Director Hansgrohe UK

As utility prices continue to increase, consumers need to start to think about watersaving models and, helped by initiatives like the BMA water-efficiency labelling scheme, choosing and identifing water-saving models is now simpler and easier to understand.

Marketing Communications Manager, Laufen

Digital Commercial Manager Crosswater

In terms of shapes, we are seeing a trend for more slim-profile rectangular and square shower heads whilst – putting design to one side for one moment – water-saving features are becoming a big consideration and we predict a much greater demand for watersaving shower brassware in the future.

In a sense, we are late to the market with our new Crosswater Digital offer but that was deliberate. We wanted enduring, robust technology that would create new and exciting options for designers coupled with compelling and tangible benefits for the end-user. Crosswater Digital is a German/ Swiss collaboration that combines precision and engineering in a format that we took time to ensure was perfect for the UK bathroom. The technology is familiar to the consumer. They can understand the obvious benefits and are ready to embrace the technology in the bathroom.

Laufen | www.uk.laufen.com

Another key factor, besides cost, is regulations. Part G, which became mandatory in April 2010, means that any new building or extension that is subject to building regs approval must comply with water usage being limited to a maximum of 125 litres per person per day. This is difficult to enforce and monitor but the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) representative who visits to inspect the property will ask about – and expect to see – the use of water-saving fittings.

Recognising that cost is a priority for endusers is a key factor that is seen to be influencing shower design. It pays to get some free or low cost fundamentals right in the first place, so to get a wow factor that is cost effective firstly ensure that the bathroom designs alone, create interest and desire. Once this has been achieved I suggest looking for products that generate aspiration but are affordable and critically reliable. Time is money, and the last thing that a developer or specifier needs is a call back to snag bathroom installations. The end user is fairly safe with products such as sanitaryware and tiles, but shower enclosures especially are prone to leakage unless purchased from an established brand with a solid reputation.

Bathrooms are becoming a lot more technology focused as products develop and new innovations infiltrate the bathroom market. From waterproof televisions to ʻsmartʼ shower controls, there are a number of new technologies that consumers updating their bathroom should be aware of.

When it comes to general bathroom trends, minimalist product design with thicker glass is continuing to remain the popular choice – particularly at the higher end of the market. It’s all about creating a spa-like sanctuary with indulgent products that look great, such as spacious enclosures, walk-ins and wet rooms.

Digital showers enable the user to create a shower experience that is completely personalised to their own preference through either pre-programmed settings or features such as temperature control to warm-up the water before you enter the shower. In essence, digital showers allow you to control the shower itself and also customise aspects such as music and lighting to make your shower a more complete and enjoyable experience.

With the popularity of wet rooms, one of the increasingly popular product combinations we have seen is installing the wet room panel, enclosure or walk-in to a level access shower tray, which has been sunk below the floorboards so it sits flush with the floor. This gives a ‘simulated’ wet room finish, with the benefit of reducing the installation time, and eliminating the need to use a specialist wet room installer.

Managing Director Coram Showers

Frameless enclosures with sliding doors are enormously popular, especially when wanting to create a bathroom with the wow factor. Consumers appreciate the clean, contemporary look of frameless enclosures whilst those with sliding doors are perfect for bathrooms where space is at a premium. With more and more consumers seeking to emulate the wet room feel long associated with spas, it is wise for bathroom manufacturers to include frameless models within its portfolio, erring towards walk in and frameless enclosures. Technology will be more accepted as it is tried and tested in people’s homes. Consumers will demand efficient, functional digital shower designs that look sleek and modern. However, they will look to incorporate technology into their space without disrupting the clean lines of their scheme. As a result, designs will become sleeker and more discrete, with form and function working together to ensure digital technology is a subtle but all important element of a modern bathroom scheme.

As well as looking stylish, ‘simulated’ and true wet room style showering spaces also offer the benefit of total ease of access. Bathroom design trends are being driven at the higher end of the market, where users are often older and therefore may be considering products which will last for years to come, and will make their lives easier as they grow older. So a wet room style showering space offers a style statement, with the benefit of level access and door less entry for total unrestricted access.

Making an Impression

Testing materials to the limit was the challenge that was met by the winners of a design competition run by Italian bathroom brand Falper… Controlstampo was the winner of the contract bathroom category in a recent competition for designers working with the solid surface material Cristalplant. Designed by Paola Taccardi, Dario Gaudio and Vittorio Venezia, the thinking behind the collection is based upon an emphasis

on the structural aspects of making buildings strong – such as beams and pillars – and incorporating them into a light and welcoming bathroom range that includes a bath, sink and shower. Aesthetically, there is also a nod towards the tools and machinery used for moulding plastics to create what the

designers consider to be “a hybrid between printed objects and the tools used for printing themselves”. The winners of the competition – now in its fifth year – were announced during Milan Design Week at a special installation in the city created by designer Marco Piva. Entrants were invited to submit designs

that best showed off the qualities of the Cristalplant material and which were also inspired by the creative style of the Falper brand. The Italian manufacturer will be incorporating the winning designs into its 2013 Autumn/Winter Collection. i

Perfect Precision A stylish finish and highly bespoke design was the order of the day for the kitchen in this Grade II Listed home in West London…

Appliances include a Miele oven, combi, warming drawer, gas hob, dishwasher and fridge freezer with a De Dietrich extractor, cast iron Kohler 700mm sink, a Dornbracht Tara classic tap and an Insinkerator hot and chilled water tap

DESIGNER: What was the thinking behind the overall kitchen design – what were the main space and function requirements? EMMA JORDAN: The kitchen was designed to be in keeping with the style and age of the house which is a period listed property in West London. The bespoke kitchen design was based around in-frame shaker style cabinetry. The old kitchen was at the window end of the room which originally was a small,

cramped and impractical space with a dining table within a large open space – I switched them around to create a larger more practical kitchen area. DESIGNER: What were the main design obstacles or challenges that had to be overcome? JORDAN: The two larder cupboards either side of the stove are original to the house and had to stay, so I designed the new kitchen around them. The room was not quite wide enough to have

a large island and not quite shallow enough to have a galley kitchen so the island I designed is a lovely example of a small and thinner island – complete with an oak butchers block – that allows for mainly just preparation space but allows for some seating. DESIGNER: What products were specified for the kitchen? JORDAN: We created kitchen stained oak veneer and hand painted doors that are complemented with satin

All units have satin nickel handles and are complemented with a ‘Misty Carrara’ Caesarstone worktop with oak butchers block

DESIGNER PROFILE: nickel handles. The carcasses were also stained oak veneer. The worktops are Caesarstone ‘Misty Carrara’, whilst all the appliances were from Miele, with a Siemens fridge freezer, a De Dietrich extractor and a cast-iron 700mm Kohler sink that features a Dornbracht Tara classic tap and Insinkerator hot and chilled water tap. The pendant lighting above the island unit creates a focal point and provides task lighting in the kitchen. i

Emma Jordan, Designer, Holloways of Ludlow Emma Jordan, (27), studied Interior Design at London Metropolitan University, graduating in 2006 to pursue a design career. Jordan’s first job was with a luxury kitchen designer based in Knightsbridge, London, where she learnt the essential skills required to become a successful kitchen designer. Her creative passion, matched with a desire to create

beautiful homes, saw her join Domus & Surface Tiles as a domestic interior and retail designer that enabled her to expand her love for texture, materials and surfaces. In 2010, Jordan joined Holloways of Ludlow, designing kitchens for clients that often require an ambitious use of materials and manufacturing techniques to create individual and genuinely bespoke kitchens. In 2013, she was recognised as a finalist at the Homes & Gardens Designer Awards in the Kitchen Designer of the Year category.

“It is a lovely example of a small and thinner island that allows for mainly just preparation space but also for some seating DESIGNER: What about your choice of materials and textures? JORDAN: We wanted to design a warm and homely kitchen space to fit with the age and original features of the property. Oak was the preferred wood as the client wanted to keep his original dining table to create cohesion in the space, and also replace the oak floor with oak parquet. The result is a beautiful, warm kitchen that is enhanced by the use of wood and hand-painted cabinetry. The wood burner helps create a focal point at the rear of the kitchen which is surrounded by white brickwork tiles to create a really striking effect. DESIGNER: What are your own favourite design elements within this kitchen? JORDAN: I really love the wine storage and the long drawer under the ovens which are great for trays and platters. I also really like how the mixture of solid doors and glass doors in the cabinets help to lighten the kitchen. i

Following the success of Villeroy & Boch’s Aveo collection launched a decade ago, Sebastian Conran, designer of the range, has updated the collection with a more contemporary look. Called Aveo New Generation, the collection features sleeker sanitaryware, new furniture and updated storage. The distinct oval form of the sanitaryware has been retained and modernised. The basin has been reduced in height whilst retaining a large bowl size. The three toilets in the range have been updated with thinner, contoured seats, combined with soft closing and quick release functions for an enhanced user-friendly experience, and the wall-mounted toilet has been equipped with Villeroy & Boch’s new SupraFix 2.0 mounting system for easier installation.

info

Taking inspiration from the sanitaryware designs, Conran has created a new furniture range that incorporates curved fronts and handleless cabinetry which are intended to mirror the sleek lines of the Aveo range. The furniture has been created with family use in mind, featuring divided storage that is compact and space efficient. It is available in Pure Oak or Dark Oak wood finishes or a more modern Glossy White option. Completing the collection is the iconic egg-shaped bath that in 2003 was the first organic shaped bath of its kind. New to this year’s version, the bath has been created in one piece, with its oval form appearing seamless with a rimless design. It is crafted using the manufacturer’s Quaryl quartz sand and acrylic material.i

Designing for the Senses Carla Alonso, Brand and Product Manager at Fagor Kitchen Appliances, explains how the latest extraction products can quietly clear the air in any kitchen

56

pg

Separating the hob from a bank of ovens in tall units, a kitchen island or a peninsula is certainly the most functional option for today’s contemporary open plan designs. When it comes to incorporating extraction within the layout, designers have a wealth of style choices to offer their customers depending on the look of the kitchen and whether it is going to be a focal point or hidden until required. Ideally, all extractors should be ducted to an outside wall to ensure the quietest performance. A simple calculation can be done to establish the necessary airflow; the volume of the room multiplied by 10. For fast cooking – which produces more cooking

fumes – an additional reserve should be allowed for. Stunning overhead extraction can be installed to add the wow factor that many customers are seeking from their kitchen design and stainless steel with clear or black glass is currently popular. Alternatively, a downdraft extractor can be the hidden gem in the kitchen. These are perfectly suited for kitchens with islands or peninsulas, or are perfect solutions for kitchens with beamed or low ceilings. With its motor installed underneath in the units, the downdraft rises to just above pan level (ordinarily 31cm) to extract fumes and cooking odours and is ideally ducted through the floor for best performance.i

Above The Fagor 7CFT NEROiSLA 40cm Decorative Island Hood is the ideal showcase for an island kitchen. It features digital touch controls, four extraction speeds, and two halogen lights to make a feature of it at night Top Fagor’s CFD-60X Downdraft Hood sits behind a 60-65cm hob and rises at the touch of the controls. It has a maximum extraction rate of 810m³ and a maximum noise level of 57 dB(A)

Grey is the up-and-coming shade for kitchens, according to Bellissimo, and is ready to take its place alongside white as one of the trade’s big sellers. With this in mind, Bellissimo has added a choice of nine greys to its upmarket Florence lacquered range of slab doors and drawer fronts. All the shades are available in matt or gloss. “White is really strong and still growing,” says Bellissimo managing director Warnock Watson, “but grey is gaining ground against black and cream”. Offering clean lines and a spacious contemporary showering space, the 1950mm high corner walk-in has a practical 350mm hinged panel to keep overspray to a minimum. This allows easy access and also maximum freedom of movement as the shower space is not fully enclosed. The model is also available with a side panel as the Spectra SP446C (shown) to create a complete wetroom style enclosure, whilst maximising the sense of space in the bathroom.

Noken, part of the Porcelanosa Group, presents the MOOD collection, a new bathroom concept that consists of a sanitaryware line and a brassware line. The sanitaryware line, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Luis Vidal + Architects, combines an integrated ceramics range with many accessory options. It is a modular and scalable collection, both versatile and functional. The colour scheme red, yellow, blue & white, provides a touch of freshness and modernity. The MOOD brassware line, designed by Luis Vidal + Architects takes, as a point of departure, the responsible use of water. The design enables the flow and temperature of water to be customised to each use and user thanks to its electronic controls. A mechanical version offers the same futuristic and elegant design but suited to the more conservative public.

The Cook’s Kitchen by Mark Wilkinson

The creation of the Cook’s Kitchen came shortly after Mark Wilkinson left Smallbone to start up his own business in Wiltshire in the early ‘80s. He wanted a classic style that would never be cast aside because of changes in fashion – this is a key part of Wilkinson’s philosophy on environmental responsibility. The Cook’s Kitchen design rational is based upon the culture of generosity and confidence that existed toward the end of the English Golden Age – late Victorian through Edwardian times.

The design details that add to the whole style include extra deep drawers and the large bun handles that Wilkinson created “to reflect the days of Mrs Beaton, flour-covered hands, cosiness, and home baking”. The whole design is ‘softened’ with quadrant end-panels and with stopped cock-beading that adds a visual softness to the doors – doors that are otherwise a classically simple arts and crafts reflection. On top of this, Cook’s uses skirting boards rather than an inset kick-plinth, which in aesthetic terms makes it

‘belong’ to the fabric of the house, giving it permanence and making it feel like part of the home. The kitchen is usually finished in a mixture of shades from the Mark Wilkinson eco-paint range. It is still in the top-three sellers for the company some 30 years after its launch and is probably the bespoke English kitchen style that other furniture makers most typically replicate. It is a style that has become an icon. i Mark Wilkinson Furniture | www.mwf.com
