Just how striking, that’s your decision.
The difference is Gaggenau. Whether you prefer understatement or a design statement, the ovens 200 series is sure to speak volumes. It looks both elegant and stylish when integrated into a dark wall, while a light-coloured background will ensure it really stands out. In both cases, your kitchen will show your excellent taste, thanks not only to the series’ design but also to the technology inside. Because with the combination of an oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer, even the most ambitious dishes will be a success. Just how ambitious, that’s also your decision. The installation, which includes a floor-standing light as well as ceiling lights, is the latest in a long line of collaborations that the German bathroom brand has undertaken with major designers over the years. Oki Sato, the creative brain behind Nendo, says: “My aim was to combine what is most archetypal about the living space – the lighting – with water, so as to give the shower an enhanced sensuous dimension in a way we have not yet seen before. The result is something that is not just a shower, nor just a lamp, but a hybrid – a magic trick with light and water.” Axor | www.hansgrohe.co.uk Nendo | www.nendo.jp

UK manufacturer Symphony is also unveiling its new Signature collection of kitchens and we get the inside scoop on the ideas behind one of the company’s biggest new launches for many years. There’s also (just about) space for a look at the latest in bathroom furniture trends, and a designer briefing on kitchen extraction to help keep you right up to date. Enjoy the issue!

Sweet Style Cooker hood manufacturer Elica has added Dolce to its range of wall mounted hoods.
Brand Value
Saloni has introduced Brand, a 22.4cm x 90cm porcelain tile that features a pattern of ‘pre-arranged’ ceramic layouts in a palette of faded browns and greys. Saloni | www.saloni.com
Dolce is a contemporary interpretation of the classic cooker hood shape. Available in a variety of colours – including orange, lime green, pale blue and grey – the technopolymer construction is key in creating a stylish and sinuous design, further enhanced by a thin, polished steel line. The hood is 86cm wide and is operated by touch controls, with a perimeter aspiration system to optimise cooking fume capture and a discreet LED strip light control light. Elica | www.elica.co.uk

Glass artist George Papadopoulos has created Bathrooms International | for the bathroom these illuminated glass panels www.bathroomsint.com of a luxury London property. They are made using a process that he has spent years developing. It involves the pattern being sandblasted on to the glass before being smashed according to a carefully sketched-out design. Q - What is the key to successful showroom design? Kathryn Griffiths, Marketing Executive, Kohler UK, Cheltenham:
the big question
As a showroom designer for Kohler UK, I believe less is more. It is important to create a relatable, inspirational area for the consumer, whilst displaying a diverse product range. Kohler has a full category offering and it can sometimes be a challenge to decide which products suit each retail showroom. I am always mindful not to cram too much into a space and allow it to breath. I feel a well thought-out space is key, branding is crucial and knowing how the consumer shops plays a huge part in design.
Grant Bliben, Director, Aquarooms, Barnet: We set the showroom out were possible with a mix of full bathroom bays with full height walls and fully tiled displays showing the latest in European products, using the manufacturers with the greatest support and control of their products.
We place an emphasis on design and installation, reducing the amount of products on offer but dealing with as many direct accounts as possible and
Designer Think Tank 156.indd 16
building stronger relationships with our manufacturers. The big question is though, how often should they be changed?
Kicki CarlssonBoyd, Managing Director, Dröm UK, Byfleet: The secret to
successful showroom design is to create an exciting, innovative, enticing space for your clients so they enjoy the experience of buying your products. Although a sauna and steam showroom like ours will always be slightly different to the traditional kitchen and bathroom showrooms, the principal is the same. As well as showcasing your products remember to provide your clients with a space to sit and discuss their project in comfort, allowing them to view a variety of finishes and options without feeling pressured. It’s also good to change your room set decor regularly to keep the showroom looking fresh and inviting.

Components manufacturer Hettich got tough with copycat manufacturers at Interzum in Germany recently as part of its ongoing efforts to protect its intellectual property. Tim Leedham, Managing Director of Hettich UK, said: “This is an increasing problem and is an issue wherever there is a market for cheap products. Warning Over Labelling Non-Compliance Manufacturers need to ensure that they are complying with major changes in the labelling of bathroom products marketed throughout Europe warns the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA). The changes – which came into effect last month – are mandatory and noncompliance can ultimately lead to imprisonment for up to 3 months and/or a fine of up to £5,000 per incident. “It’s a serious issue,” said Chris TaylorHamlin, Technical Director of the BMA. “Fortunately members of the BMA have been fully informed, through our technical committees, for over 12 months about the requirements of the new Regulations and have been able to plan changes to their inventory. “But we have heard of some horror stories of suppliers who have been blissfully ignorant of the changes and are now
having to spend thousands having their products tested and relabelled. It’s hit their bottom line.” From now on there is the new requirement for all bathroom products covered by Harmonised European Standards to have the familiar CE Mark fixed to the product or its packaging. CE marking is a key indicator of a product’s compliance with European legislation and enables its free movement within the European market. It is not a quality mark but it does indicate the product’s fitness for purpose. “CE marking is a necessary burden,” says Taylor-Hamlin. “It outlaws non-compliant products, and highlights those suppliers who have no infrastructure for recording keeping and batch marking. These new regs mark a major step change in our industry.” Bathroom Manufacturers Association | www.bathroom-association.org www.kb-network.co.uk

Successfully making a style statement in the bathroom is increasingly as much about the furniture as it is the sanitaryware. We take a look at some of the latest trends and innovations taking shape in this rapidly evolving market
Aspirations in bathroom design have never been higher. It may seem like a cliché, but there is good grounding in the idea that consumers see and experience high-end spa or hotel bathrooms and want to replicate that standard in their own homes.
form as well as function in the bathroom – a trend that has been on the increase for a number of years but which is certainly continuing its upward climb.
Of course, this opens up a whole set of challenges for bathroom manufacturers and designers alike. For example, there are two big advantages that a hotel bathroom layout has over a residential one. Firstly, there is often more space to play with, certainly at a higher end hotel, than you will often find in a house in the UK. Secondly, a hotel bathroom rarely has to find space to accommodate the wealth of toiletries and other bathroom supplies that we all try to cram into the smallest room of our homes (well, perhaps excluding the broom cupboard).
and reduce clutter in the bathroom. Mark Walker, UK Sales Director at Bagno Design, says: “With the trend for adding second and third bathrooms on to our homes, floor space is now more than ever at a premium, so clever and stylish storage solutions designed specifically with the smaller bathroom and cloakroom in mind are now key for designers looking to create luxurious, spa-like environments despite the lack of floor space that may be available.
It’s no surprise then that storage is king. Clever storage solutions such as wall-hung cabinets and vanity units are increasingly in demand as consumers seek to hide essential items
“As well as clever internal storage solutions, this also means choosing materials and finishes wisely, to ensure the furniture chosen enhances the space rather than encroaches on it.”
Mark Walker

CHANGING PRIORITIES
Ilaria Genovese, Product Manager, Keramag Design, believes that a shift in consumer mindset has helped several product categories become a more prominent fixture on a customer wish list. “The toilet has evolved to become much more than a functional necessity but a way to make a style statement. One key trend is the wall hung style. As UK bathroom design continues to take inspiration from Europe, there has been a significant movement towards wall hung products reminiscent of the upmarket, continental look while offering space-saving benefits at the same time.” There are strong signs that there is a greater focus on
“Over the past three years, we have seen furniture become one of the strongest growth areas for bathrooms and more often than not, it is included as part of the overall bathroom sale”, says Gary Dart, Managing Director at Duravit. “Wall-hung furniture is already a popular choice with our customers as it delivers the contemporary style that people look for. We are also witnessing a return of soft, feminine lines, with curved, slim rounded corners featuring more widely and textured surfaces appearing within furniture designs.”
BATHROOM CONVERGENCE
He adds that there are even more interesting developments to come, as furniture and technology converge. “In the future, as technology advances, furniture that can offer a multi-functional role in the bathroom will become more mainstream, with consumers demanding integrated AV furniture solutions.” i

Expectations are already much higher it seems. “Customers are demanding more of bathroom furniture,” explains David Millon, Marketing Director at Villeroy & Boch. “Not only does furniture need to be space efficient and look great, but it also has to include intelligent design features that are practical to all homeowners.” Millon points to Villeroy & Boch’s new Joyce collection of furniture as a good example of this. Cabinets feature a socket for electric razors built into the top drawer, whilst other options include a hidden bin and tissue box holder. It seems that blending design appeal with functionality
David Millon
and technology is the big challenge for the bathroom furniture market. Getting this balance right – and predicting the proportions of each that consumers will be wanting in the future – will be the key for all manufacturers. Sohei Nishida, General
pg
Sohei Nishida
Manager at TOTO Europe, says that bringing these strands together is the main principle behind the Japanese brand’s new SG range of bathroom furniture. “The handle-free units have push-to-open and soft-close mechanisms and the option for elements
to be wall hung or free standing. As we also believe that every bathroom has a unique atmosphere that has to reflect both the available space and customer taste, our SG range provides the opportunity to mix and match a whole range of individual but co-ordinated pieces with the choice between high quality teak veneers or hi-gloss white covers for the cabinets.” Whereas sanitaryware – and perhaps a statement shower – have traditionally been the main focus for bathrooms in the past, furniture has become the key component to successful bathroom design, as homeowners seek to create a relaxing retreat that is calm and uncluttered. i

MIX AND MATCH
Sarah Holey, Marketing Communications Manager at Laufen, believes that when space is at a premium, storage becomes even more important and stand-alone or modular furniture pieces that offer flexibility are becoming an increasingly popular option. “Such furniture enables homeowners to mix and match individual items to best suit the wall and floor space available, in a way that is simply not possible with fully fitted furniture.” She adds that colour is also a key trend in the modern bathroom, and modular furniture offers an ideal way of introducing splashes of
Sarah Holey
boldness and brightness to the room without being overbearing. “The trend for mixing and matching materials and finishes that is being seen in the kitchen is also now being mirrored in the bathroom, with natural

timbers and high gloss finishes being particularly popular.” The mix and match theme is certainly one to watch closely for the bathroom sector. Where once it was all about
the shape – and sometimes the colour – of sanitaryware, now the options are even broader thanks to the wide range of furniture options. Marten Baker, Commercial Manager at Bauhaus, sees an altogether darker future: “Darker, perhaps ‘moody’ or monochrome, finishes are predicted by many design gurus as leading the way next year, so anthracite, graphite and steel finishes should hit the spot. Gloss wood finishes appear to be back in vogue, whilst the growth in well-defined textured wood finishes will continue if the fashion in the kitchen sector is anything to go by, providing a warmer more tactile comforting feel.” i

Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Symphony has unveiled its major new kitchen brand, and it has grand plans for providing consumers with a previously unimaginable level of personalisation
Yorkshire-based furniture manufacturer Symphony has added to its broad offering with a new highend brand which it hopes will give consumers even greater choice in colours and styles. As the largest privately owned fitted furniture supplier in the UK, Symphony has been producing furniture for over 40 years from its 500,000 sq ft Barnsley factory and headquarters. In recent times, it has been competing with the significant threat of imported
34
furniture from European manufacturers. Remaining successful through tough economic times in a highly competitive market has demanded a continued focus on innovation, and it is this approach that has led to the latest new kitchen designs being added to the group’s range. Symphony’s Product Manager Helen Claughton spoke to Designer Kitchen & Bathroom about the new Signature brand and how it fits in to the company’s broader portfolio.
pg DESIGNER KITCHEN & BATHROOM: From a design perspective, what was the starting point for the new range? HELEN CLAUGHTON: The main objective for Signature was to fulfil the market need to create a higher specification of kitchen ranges and cabinets using modern manufacturing techniques.
The starting point of Signature was to design a premium kitchen range that is innovative in design and engineered to the highest level of

“The starting point was to design a premium kitchen range that is innovative in design and engineered to the highest level of quality”
quality. It had to have instant appeal to both customers who desire a classic traditional kitchen and those who want the very last in contemporary design whilst also encompassing the latest technology.
Signature was all about showcasing British manufacturing and design and giving consumers and retailers the confidence to say that it’s not just German manufacturers that can make a decent kitchen!
There was a definite gap in the market for offering a more bespoke type of kitchen. We have invested significant funds into our facilities to implement a brand new paint plant and laser edging line which increases the options available for the consumer.
DESIGNER: How does the company’s creative process work? Are retail customers consulted on what new products they would like to see or else otherwise involved in the R&D process? CLAUGHTON: We keep a close eye on trends coming from Europe and visit all
the major exhibitions throughout the year to identify new products and where there is a gap in the market. We work very closely with our suppliers who are happy to show us new products and the developments that they are working on as well as showing any new manufacturing techniques that we are able to use to improve our products. Retail customers are involved in research and development of all new products. Key retailers are often asked i www.kb-network.co.uk

to attend forums and events to gain valuable feedback in new ranges. DESIGNER: What general trends are Symphony seeing from consumers and how are these patterns influencing new product development? CLAUGHTON: The trends we’re seeing in the marketplace are for a high specification of product with consumers wanting to customise their order and make it more personal to them. These trends always influence our new products, and more specifically, has an impact on what we wanted Signature to be. Signature is a premium range of kitchens that are made and painted to order. We wanted to offer the very best designs, styles and product that we could.
DESIGNER: What is the outlook for kitchen design in the mid-high end of the market? CLAUGHTON: The outlook for kitchen design for the mid to high end of the market is looking bright. For us, there was a definite gap in the market to introduce the new luxury brand of Signature, as consumers were pushing for a more premium kitchen collection.
Consumers want to choose a kitchen that is painted specifically for them, with the ability to mix and match colour choices, something which our brand new paint plant enables us to do.
Open plan is definitely here to stay. The increase in popularity of celebrity chefs and for consumers wanting to impress with dinner parties means that the kitchen has become central to this activity. Consumers want to interact with their guests and entertain, and open plan living spaces suit that lifestyle completely. We’re finding that consumers want to show off their kitchens and gadgets so having the ability to personalise their kitchens is becoming very important, enabling the kitchen to be unique to them.

The current trend for mixing materials and colours will be something that endures for the long term. Mixing colour choices and finishes are becoming an increasingly popular way for consumers to make their mark on the kitchen design, plus the addition of laser edging colour options with Signature offers something a little bit special that you can’t get from any other manufacturer in the UK. i

Ultra-modern and feature-packed, this contemporary kitchen design by Dutch designer Davy Swanenberg has created ripples right across the Atlantic, winning the top prize in the Sub-Zero & Wolf Kitchen Design Contest, the global final of which was held recently in Madison, Wisconsin, US. Swanenberg of Culimaat Kitchens in the Netherlands, was named the grand-prize winner and receives a $40,000 prize. The kitchen is situated in an old furniture factory, located in a picturesque village near s’Hertogenbosch, the capital of the southern province of Brabant. “I started with an empty space, which featured prominent old wooden beams,” explains Swanenberg. “That was the stage for what had to be a semi-professional kitchen. The client’s requirements with respect to the appliances were very clear – they had to be as professional as possible, so we chose the Wolf range for its iconic red controls and the heavy cast iron grates.”
The kitchen measurements are based on the dimensions of the range, hence the shape of the worktop’s edge. The warming drawer dictated the size of the drawers in the island, and led to the choice of using matt marble. “Matt marble is easily cut in different thicknesses and perfect to create a uniform and robust look between the warming drawer and furniture fronts,” Swanenberg explains. “The Sub-Zero fridges finish the semi-professional atmosphere, thanks to their stainless steel counterpoint to the rough materials. I searched for contrasting materials on purpose, making sure they share the same colour palette. The result is this kitchen, a sleek industrial look with plenty of light and spaciousness.” As well as the Sub-Zero & Wolf appliances, the rest of the kitchen was specified with a Gaggenau dishwasher, coffee machine and extractor hood, while the sink and tap are by Dornbracht. i www.kb-network.co.uk

Material-wise, the design was all about contrasts, for example combining the extremely smooth laquered fronts with the rough woodgrain structure on the sides of the marble worktop. The waxed leather framed in blue steel gives a similar effect, whilst the wall behind the cooking section was treated with Concrete-Ciré, which gives a stone-like effect after drying and finishing. “A nice detail is that we wanted to bring a bit of nature inside and chose to decorate the space behind
the beech chopping board with a cow hide framed behind anti-reflective glass,” says Swanenberg. The simplicity of the design is a neat fit with the subdued and well-considered colour scheme. Robust, pure materials like cement, marble and leather fall into place in a modern styling with a play of lines that was thought out down to the millimetre. Despite its effortless appearance, this was a challenging project. Swanenberg
says: “It was tricky to combine so many different materials and appliances in such a way that they form a unity. But bringing them together successfully allows you to discover more and more detail within the kitchen the longer you look at it. It has to radiate calm – when the homeowner returns from a long day at work, he has to feel the calmness and feel at home.” Given the highly detailed nature of the scheme, the designer admits that he finds it hard to pick his favourite aspect

of the scheme. There is the marble worktop with cutouts, finished with matt on the top, and a woodgrain structure on the front. The fact that everything is glued together with mitred joints also appeals to his craftsmanship side. But, he adds: “The leather doors with steel frames really stole my heart. We went to select the leather at a tanner’s, coloured it and treated it with a coating.” This striking kitchen is characteristic of the type of projects Culimaat Kitchens
35

has become known for. “This style is our signature style,” Swanenberg explains, “in terms of the details, height differences in the worktop, the grips that run through, the use of contrasting materials (in matt, gloss or both), and the atmosphere in general. “We also enjoy pushing the limits, for example by making a kitchen completely out of thermoformed solid surface. We also often work with blocks of stainless steel, inlaid with marble or solid surface.”
info
This unique project captured the imagination of the Kitchen Design Contest judges however. One of the judges, architect E.J. Meade, said that the panel looked for a great level of innovation in the contemporary-style kitchens and that they unanimously agreed on the excellence of Swanenberg’s design. Meade described the project as “a kitchen of contrasts” that was “tempered with a playful use of materials and surfaces,” “rigorously detailed,” and one that the judges deemed a work of art. i

At the high end of the market, statement hoods remain very popular, especially those that use more unusual materials such as coloured glass, textured or woven stainless steel. At the other end of the design spectrum, designers and consumers alike are discovering recessed hoods
There are now a handful of elite extractors that are compatible with typical, 400mm joists and they have been very well received. Some of these have a frame that can be finished in a RAL colour that either contrasts with the ceiling or that is an identical colour – the latter creates the effect of the extractor ‘disappearing’ entirely, whilst the former is a great way of bringing the extractor into the rest of the kitchen’s scheme and creating a really interesting pop of colour. Similarly, we’re seeing a lot of interest in extractors that offer bespoke options – colour, print, co-ordination with other materials in the kitchen – or even completely tailored solutions. Consumers can expect more choice of extractors offering high performance at a reasonable price. Retailers are likely to experience growing interest in ceiling hoods where consumers are looking for powerful but discreet extraction, particularly if they don’t want the hood to be a focal part of their kitchen design. Premium perimeter extractors will also grow in popularity for their high performance and quiet operation. Colour options are also likely to increase to keep pace with the growing demand for colourful ovens and range cookers. Vessel is made from carbon fibre which is utilised for its inherent strength and ability to be formed into complex curves. The weave of the fabric also references the cloth of a typical hammock. Beneath the layers of carbon fibre lies a foam core, which insulates the tub, meaning the bath stays hot for longer than normal. Miles Hartwell, Co-founder of Splinter Works, said: “Struck by the synergy between the shapes of two compelling symbols of relaxation, a hammock and a bath tub, we were inspired to develop a piece that would provide the ultimate vehicle for total escapism.

Making an Impression 48
pg
The showroom is the space to show off just what you can do for prospective customers, so presenting a good account of yourself is vital. We ask some designers for their views on what makes the difference between a good showroom and a great showroom…
Selling the dream Schmidt Palmers Green’s showroom has been designed with the ‘customer eye view’ very much in mind, says co-owner Katerina Sarantis (pictured with Konstantinos Sarantis)
For many, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It offers the possibility of combining and personalising comfort, aesthetics and functionality. The main objective when designing our showroom was to create a friendly and homely environment for everybody to enjoy. Many kitchen showrooms tend to be built to a ‘monumental scale’ but ours has a kind of real life, with items which are related and adaptable.
Schmidt | www.schmidt-palmersgreen.com
We created spaces that somehow bring us together, with displays of a variety of kitchen styles that are designed to offer a wide choice of materials, colours, layouts and equipment but at the same time, shown in a way that makes each of them seem ideal for your home. Our ‘creative box’ – which is what we call the area where we display all the Schmidt range samples, carcase choices, handles, worktops and splashbacks – was planned to be the dominant, spacious area of the showroom. This is where we work with clients to create their dream kitchen. www.designerkbmag.co.uk

“Although there are many eye-catching ranges on display, the way the kitchens and other furniture works together is carefully planned, using visual aids such as colour and texture” Roundhouse | www.roundhousedesign.com
It’s all in the detail Jamie Telford, Director, Roundhouse First impressions are crucial. The Roundhouse showrooms are an expression of the way the company works: elegant and restrained with nothing extraneous on show – the key theme is ‘less is more’. There is always something striking to be seen through the windows, from book-matched apple-wood cabinetry, amazing marble work surfaces to backlit onyx walls. Clients can also see the numerous recent awards
Roundhouse has won highlighted in the window. Fresh scented flowers welcome customers as they enter the showroom where the friendly team is discreetly on hand to talk about potential projects in several relaxed seating areas where coffee can be served. Our showrooms are regularly updated with new kitchens and furniture installed and, although there are many eye-catching
ranges on display, the way they work together is carefully planned, using visual aids such as colour and texture. Unique new surfaces, are being researched and developed on a regular basis and introduced to the showroom, most recently new metallic finishes and polished concrete. Roundhouse is proud to be a British design and manufacturing company, and regularly talent spots British designers with the aim of showcasing their new work. Unique
British products are on display in the showrooms, including carefully selected bespoke crafts, such as understated ceramics or discreet seating from leading designers such as Deadgood and Pinch. The Roundhouse goal of producing beautifully designed, British-made, bespoke kitchens and other furniture that is built to last, is brought to life in our contemporary and innovative showrooms in London, Guildford and Cheltenham. www.kb-network.co.uk

Halcyon Interiors | www.halcyoninteriors.com on show as a talking point but never sold. We try to show a variety of options whether it be worktop details or combinations of appliances and, where possible, show complete kitchens.
Setting the scene Graham Robinson, Showroom Manager, Halcyon Interiors, London First impressions are key. Your windows need to provide an insight to what you will find inside, ensuring your entrance looks inviting and uncluttered. As soon as a client enters the showroom, how it makes them feel is paramount. It’s important to make the client feel at ease and comfortable and this is achieved through a number of methods – the temperature, lighting, music and aroma can initially be more important than the displays themselves. Ultimately though, the displays should be the focal point and they need to be right: aspirational but not unobtainable. Gone are the days when ranges were put
We change a third of our displays every year with additional minor changes throughout the year as new models are introduced. Keeping a showroom understated and elegant ensures it stands the test of time and means you do not have to change some displays for a number of years. You can change a look of a showroom very effectively with propping. Carefully chosen accessories create warmth and help a client imagine it their home. We tend to stay away from the more obvious toasters and food mixers in favour of more striking items. Playing with the scale of items is a great way to create interest.
“The displays should be the focal point and they need to be right: aspirational but not unobtainable”
Our new Beaconsfield showroom was a little bit different, working with a Grade I listed building. We wanted the integrity of the building to show through and there were lots of limitations that we had to work with. The challenges were worthwhile though as the sleek kitchens work well in contrast to the 16th century beams.

easy to find? Can you get there by public transport? Is there parking nearby? Will the client’s sat-nav find you using the postcode? Difficulty in accessing a showroom will have caused a negative experience for the client before they have even reached you.
Staying one step ahead Alex Newbery, Business Development Manager, Sapphire Living Space, Bulthaup Exeter What is the purpose of a Showroom? I was recently posed this question by Bulthaup’s Head of Corporate Design whilst visiting the Bulthaup factory and headquarters in Aich, Germany. The corporate design team helps and supports partners all over the world to achieve truly inspirational showrooms and I was lucky enough to experience first-hand some of its design strategies. The purpose of a showroom is to demonstrate your style and values to potential clients. We all know the importance of first impressions but when are these first impressions formed? Many would assume it is when the client first walks through the door, but does it start even before this? I believe it does. Is your showroom
52
So assuming the client has happily arrived at your showroom how do you achieve the right atmosphere? Music is a good way to create ambience and thought should be given to lighting. The corporate designers believe nothing beats natural daylight but this is not always possible so darker areas should be carefully lit. The position of displays is also important. Of course, a display of interest is needed at the front of a showroom to entice people in but a strong display should also be considered at the back to encourage people through. And what about your displays? In this economic climate it is tempting to try and please everyone but this is an impossible task, a minimalist won't want shabby chic and a traditionalist won't be tempted by the latest trend. Know your brand and be true to your style – it’s ok if not everyone gets it, just as long as some do!
“Difficulty in accessing a showroom will create a negative experience for the client before they have even reached you”
It was interesting to learn that while product preferences and style trends may vary country to country, these showroom design techniques are applied the world over. Sapphire Living Space | www.sapphirespaces.co.uk

“Small showrooms can convey the dream of owning your own designer bathroom just as successfully as larger showrooms” First impressions are vital to any design. The ambience and layout of a showroom is the first thing that customers perceive before even speaking to a sales person.
A question of trust Julia Lambert, Designer, Keramag Design Studio, Chelsea
Customers should feel comfortable, not pressurised, and be stimulated by every display, which means that designers should aim to create inspirational ideas in every bay. Colour, lighting and dressing of the showroom are the most important aspect – they are so very important, as this will create the ‘wow factor’ and make it stand out from the rest. The design should encourage the customer to purchase the whole lifestyle creation produced by the designer. Showroom staff should be on hand, but relaxed, not 100% driven solely by sales, as customers will purchase without pressure once they feel confident, inspired and you have gained their trust. The customer desires the dream bathroom – the whole package – and a well-structured showroom with inspirational designs and a relaxed atmosphere will achieve this.
Small showrooms can convey the dream of owning your own designer bathroom just as successfully as larger showrooms. Often larger showrooms use only 40% of the bays to sell. Four or five bays, creatively designed and dressed and lit to perfection, will give customers enough inspiration and confidence to move forward with a purchase knowing that they are in experienced hands. Very often less is more as too many displays tend to confuse customers. Brochures and design packages can always be used to visually display anything that is not available to see in the showroom. In my experience of working in a retail showroom – as well as designing showrooms and exhibitions – customers only buy with trust. Once you have this, your ability to offer all ideas large and small (using the showroom as your selling tool) will make their dream become a reality. The ideas and finished design should always surpass the customer’s wildest dreams, personal ideas and vision. www.kb-network.co.uk

Designs with Distinction Far from being just a functional necessity, brassware has real focal point potential says David Cole, Sales Director, Perrin & Rowe
It can become mundane to follow suit as a designer, which is why turning brassware into a feature rather than just a basic requirement is worthwhile. Chrome is still seen as the most popular choice of brassware finish, partly due to its capacity to suit both contemporary and traditional schemes. Ideal for contemporary interiors, chrome has a high shine finish with slight hint of blue, plus it also lends itself well to a more classical scheme. Nickel on the other hand, offers a golden glow due to its polished finish. If left, nickel will develop an aged patina requiring
only an occasional polish to restore its original state. Pewter’s matt appearance works well amongst traditional designs, evoking a vintage aesthetic, whereas gold is highly luxurious, projecting a bright finish and air of opulence. Brassware manufacturers now understand that variety is key for specifiers, and therefore a choice of four finishes has become a known industry benchmark. Those manufactured in the UK are usually of the highest quality. There are different types of plating set to
British standards; light use, medium use and external use (external use being the best standard). Look for the best standard of plating as it will create a thickness that will provide an extra shield, ensuring a deep, protective coating that is resistant to wear and tear.i

The T&G option means that the Showerwall panels can be installed now with a simple v joint and sealed with silicone, as an alternative to using the standard extrusions with its square cut panel offer. The new T&G option complements the standard offer of square cut panels which are fitted using metal jointing and finishing trims which are available in bright silver, satin silver, white, black and gold.
