And a cuckoo clock.

The difference is Gaggenau. In the Black Forest, some things never change – others have been evolving since 1683. Innovation has become a tradition for us ever since our company was founded as a hammer and nail works, along with unique design that is highly regarded the world over. Such as the ovens 400 series, shown here with oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer – a combination that unites cutting-edge technology and premium materials with super ior design. Our appliances have been constantly evolving since 1683. The only thing that stays the same is that they just keep looking better and better. For more information and a list of partners, please dial 0844 8929026 or visit www.gaggenau.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit our showroom at: 40 Wigmore Street, London, W1U 2RX.

e’re about to hit another particularly busy period for the design world, especially in London where the London Design Festival will be bringing some of the world’s best creative talent together for a celebration of ideas and innovation. From Chelsea in the West to Shoreditch in the East, the city will be buzzing with events, exhibitions and installations. At its heart of course, is 100% Design. This year, we’ll be curating the very special ‘Bath Boulevard’, a display of some of the most stunning bathtubs currently on the market. Find out more about this – and many of the other highlights you should look out for at Earls Court (18-21 September) – in our special preview starting on page 24. Also this month, we visit some stunning restaurants to discover the trends that are driving interior design in cutting-edge dining and consider how some of these ideas could transfer to the residential kitchen arena. Enjoy the issue!

WASTE NOT WANT NOT It’s not just the Wombles who make good use of the things that they find – visitors to this month’s Festival of Thrift will find all sorts of inspiration on how to incorporate upcycling, recycling and sustainable thinking into their daily lives. Curated by designers Gerardine and Wayne Hemingway, the event will include exhibitions, artworks, demonstrations and talks. Wayne Hemingway said: “Thrift is very close to our hearts as we – along with many others – are concerned at the disposable nature of our society.

“Gerardine and I have always had fun being thrifty and have always loved the challenge of turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse – from turning old curtains into cushion covers or skirts during our Camden market days in the 1980s, to our current home – turning an old broken boat into a sofa.

“We have been inventive in our thrift over the years and that’s been part of the fun. It’s also why it is great to be part of a festival celebrating sustainability and recognising it’s cool to be thrifty.”

The Festival of Thrift takes place on 21-22 September at Lingfield Point, Darlington

a collection of recently created spaces that show how vastly different treatments can bring out the best in any home. All corners of the globe figure in this compendium of case studies, from the apartment of a young art collector couple in Mumbai, to the relaxed beauty of film

director Francis Ford Coppola’s palazzo in Southern Italy. A total of 34 residences are shown, complete with detailed project information and contact details for all the featured architects, decorators and suppliers, making it a valuable and inspirational resource.

the big question

Q - Are handleless kitchens the market leading modern kitchen style? John Murray, Director, Alaris UK, Aberdeen: Our modern kitchen sales

are now dominated by handleless kitchen designs at 75% of sales. I am not sure whether this is due to the kitchen sales team’s personal preference or if it is in fact the market preference. Our showroom is about to have five new modern displays fitted and they are all handleless and I wonder if they will be refitted next year if this trend fades.

Rachel Siddall, Southern Regional Sales Manager, SieMatic UK, Oxfordshire: Around 3 out of 4 SieMatic kitchens in the UK are handleless,

which has been the trend for some time. Being the founders of this style back in the early 60’s, it’s not surprising that it is still our best seller (our iconic 6006 range was the first of its kind). SieMatic has seen variations to the handleless style and although it is today seen as a modern style, to us it’s also our ‘traditional’ style. We find that clever designers mix handleless with other styles to create a unique and fresh look. At our training academy we teach designers about the architecture and influences that helped create the handleless kitchen so they can understand how to use it to its best. We don’t see a change to trend any time soon.

Green Deal Here Italy’s Statement of Intent for the Long Term Tradesmen and retailers are being urged to start the process of becoming Green Deal accredited as the potential benefits of the Government’s energy saving scheme take root.

Thomas Farquhar, Marketing Manager of Easy Green Deal, a company that helps installers and assessor organisations obtain Green Deal certification, said: “We will see an exponential growth in signups for the Green Deal scheme from the consumer as we see more Green Deal Assessors and installers become certified. They are an important part of the scheme and intrinsic to its success.” Farquhar points out that the Deal was never intended as a quick and immediate means of making the country’s homes and businesses more energy friendly, a strategy which he believes many have forgotten. “We also need to remember that this is a big education programme for the consumer. Up until now, the industry has focused on just one or two energy saving measures such as solar panels. Now we are presenting the consumer with up to 45 different options. As more people begin to understand this we will see a big uptake in signups.” The government has set a Green Deal target of 14 million homes by 2020. Easy Green Deal | www.greendealcertified.com

Italian kitchen trade body FederlegnoArredo brought its promotional tour to London recently to underline the unique ‘soul’ that Italian design brings to the home. In an event held at the Norman Fosterdesigned City Hall, the organisation’s marketing plan – which also visits the US, Russia and China before concluding at Eurocucina in Milan in 2014 – aimed to emphasise the qualities of Italian kitchen products and the campaign wheeled out some big names to help hit home the point. Architect Claudio Silvestrin and former Chelsea manager and player Gianluca Vialli were guided in a demonstration cooking session by London-based chef Giorgio Locatelli. Giovanni Anzani, Vice-President of FederlegnoArredo and Managing Director of Poliform, said: “What distinguishes

Italian kitchen companies today is stateof-the-art technology, combined with skilled craftsmanship. It excels on both an aesthetic and a budget level and defines ‘Made in Italy’ around the world.” Anzani also emphasised the continued significance of Eurocucina as Europe’s centrepiece kitchen show, despite growing competition from Living Kitchen in Cologne. “In design terms, Eurocucina is the only point of reference. In Milan in 2012, we had people from over 165 countries around the world and it is truly an event of international importance. “German manufacturers still come to exhibit at and support Eurocucina – I don’t see many Italian companies prioritising Living Kitchen just yet.”

His passion for woodwork and craftsmanship provided the foundation for an expansion that today includes 13 showrooms across the country and a sales office in Scotland. Recently refurbished, John Lewis of Hungerford’s original showroom has been designed to give due prominence to the brand’s most popular designs from its 40 year heritage. Displays include a selection of kitchen styles in a range of colours from ivory to blues to greys, all made at the company’s Oxfordshire factory.

LOFTY AMBITION

Would you allow your property to be used as a part-time showroom in exchange for having state-of-the-art Italian furniture and fittings installed free of charge? Well that’s exactly what a competition in New York was offering when it invited property owners to put forward their best locations for consideration. A prime 300 sq m loft apartment was selected as the location for the DesignApart project and it will be fitted with a range of high-end products from the likes of bathroom brand Milldue, and kitchen manufacturer TM Italia. After a year, the living showroom will be handed back to the owner, who will be allowed to keep all of the bespoke furniture and fittings. Diego Paccagnella, Founder of the DesignApart concept, will move into the apartment next month with his partner and one year-old son, and it will become a meeting point for architects, developers and specifiers interested in seeing the best of Italian design in a ‘lived-in’ context. “Traditional showrooms are no longer able to communicate as they once did, so we want to show our furnishings in a real-life context,” said Stefano Brescacin, Marketing Manager at Milldue. “Above all, we will be able to tell the story behind our company, its production, materials and bespoke craftsmanship.” The apartment opens for visits next month for meetings, seminars, and product presentations. CLASSIC CITTERIO Bathroom brand Keramag Design is exhibiting at 100% Design for the first time this year and will be showcasing its latest bathroom collection, Citterio. The collection – created by world-renowned architect Antonio Citterio – combines innovative materials with an eclectic mix of geometric and organic shapes. The range includes four bathroom suites, offering an array of toilets, basins, vanity units, storage units and illuminated mirrors. Keramag Design | Stand K146 | www.keramagdesign.com

With 3,000 sq m of additional floor space and an anticipated attendance of around 25,000 visitors across four days, 100% Design 2013 exhibition is looking to cement its position as the UK’s largest design show.

Following last year’s success, the curation of the show will again focus on four industry sectors, each arranged around a central ‘hub’ – Interiors, Office, Kitchen & Bathroom, Eco Design & Build. The hubs will showcase the work of thought-leaders across the design community with

space to meet, learn and be inspired. The Central Bar at the heart of the show is reached through a 66m long tunnel, designed by creative and live events specialists Studio Design UK. The Kitchen & Bathroom hub will incorporate the show’s restaurant, serving specially chosen seasonal foods that can be grown domestically. The space will explore design’s role in enabling micro agriculture, demonstrating the opportunities in local and individual food production. A separate installation will present the latest technology, trends and concepts in the bathroom industry. This year, the Interiors hub will explore the growing emphasis on 3D printing as an accessible method of production. A new global competition staged with creative collaboration agency Talenthouse will see selected pieces produced before and during the show within a specially designed interior. Issues

of sustainability, quality and empowerment of individual makers will be demonstrated and debated live. The expanded Interiors section will also house a newly established marketplace for interiors accessories. The Office hub will be created by design practice TILT, presenting the dramatic Hanging Room concept in which suspended room elements can be lowered and raised to continually change the hub’s function. The practice is at the forefront of ‘codesign’, which integrates end users into the design process to create spaces uniquely tailored for the communities using them. The Eco, Design and Build hub will be produced by London-based materials resource studio Material Lab. The ever-changing installation will inspire interaction with some of the world’s most innovative building and architectural materials. i

Talking Heads

Architectural icon Richard Rogers is the big name on this year’s list of speakers at Talks With 100% Design, the seminar programme that takes place throughout the four days of the show. Rogers will open the Talks programme on 18 September and will offer an insight into his architectural practice from a career spanning more than five decades. It is also a timely appearance as it coincides with Richard Rogers: Inside Out, a retrospective exhibition of his work which is running at the Royal Academy, London, until 13 October.

A new concept by design studio Front celebrates the normally unseen workings that we take for granted when we switch on the shower With a 20-year track record of working with a broad range of internationally renowned designers, Hansgrohe’s Axor brassware brand is no stranger to new and sometimes abstract ideas. In fact, designs from the likes of Jean-Marie Massaud, Philippe Starck and the Bouroullec brothers have all been startling departures from the norm when those particular collaborations were unveiled. The company’s latest creative venture sees it team up with two of the world’s most trend-setting design studios – Nendo from Japan (see Designer Kitchen &

Bathroom, August 2013), and Sweden’s Front Design. Although concept designs rather than production models, the project is an attempt to challenge existing thinking in this product category, bringing previously unseen combinations and aesthetics together for a fresh take on showering. Front’s installation has that familiar characteristic of simplicity that is associated with Scandinavian design, but it is also something of a homage to artisan skills and the aesthetics inherent in technology and installation.

The Axor WaterDream created by Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren is intended to allow the user to experience the path water takes in its most original form. “We used our personal perception of the shower and showering to draw attention to the technology behind the wall, which is often concealed,” explained von der Lancken. Lagerkvist added: “It was important for us to foster an awareness of what is the most archetypal aspect of the bathroom – the installation itself. For this reason, we played around with the most

elementary components that are used to bring water to us – pipes, valves, couplings, and funnels.” Philippe Grohe, Brand Manager for Axor, said: “Front shows how something that is normally hidden from view can become a visually appealing and valued spatial construct. “Within our overall understanding of the use of space, the interaction with water, and the multifaceted individual needs of people, we focused specifically on the shower this time, interpreting it anew with Front and Nendo.” i

Electrolux is aiming to bring professional grade appliances to the home market with its new ultra high-end range

Appliances manufacturer Electrolux has been showing off the first London installation of its new Grand Cuisine range of professional cooking technology. The Electrolux Grand Cuisine system comprises nine products, as well as the iconic French-style cooking stove Molteni. Products in the range are available

in a number of bespoke finishes so that it can be adapted to suit a contemporary or a traditional kitchen space. The ultra premium appliances are the result of several years of collaboration of specialists at Electrolux. Led by Design Director Henrik Otto, the development team included professional

chefs and leading technology experts as well as the R&D and design teams. Otto said: “We truly believe Electrolux Grand Cuisine is set to revolutionise home cooking – and will have a major impact on the future of kitchen design. The products are visually stunning but the design profile is really about communicating

the absolute precision and professional performance of the products with the richness of material and the refined machine. “The attention to detail in every single element ensures we have solved problems that the home chef does not even know needed solving – from the perfect angle of the handle on the

Combination Oven, to the interactive interfaces that can be operated with an elbow whilst your hands are full.” Starting price for the full range – excluding the Molteni stove – is £78,000. The first London residence to feature the new appliances is in the trendy North London suburb of West Hampstead. i

We’ve all done it. You stay at a nice hotel, and fall in love with the sumptuous bathroom so much that you wish you could recreate it in your own home. Well, it would be a tall order for anyone with the good fortune of staying on this luxury cruise ship to replicate this truly one-off bathroom. The Reflection Suite, designed by BG Studio of New York, is the jewel in the crown of Celebrity Reflection, part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet, measuring 1,047 ft from bow to stern and weighing 126,000 tons. It is a striking two-bedroom, 1,636 sq ft space that can accommodate up to six guests. It boasts 10-foot high floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic views which are even more expansive on the 194 sq ft wraparound veranda. The suite includes a custom dining room table and formal bar among many other features.

39

pg

The undoubted highlight however is the glass-enclosed cantilevered bathroom which extends over the edge of the ship and offers a veranda hot tub with soothing cantilever rain shower and an incredible birds-eye view of the ocean. The bathroom was designed to be the ultimate private sanctuary with customised reflective glass and a special fogger in the shower that prevents passing vessels and other guests from seeing into the suite. Francesca Bucci, co-owner of BG Studio and one of the designers involved in the project, said: “The overall look of the bathroom is meant to reflect that of a 5-Star luxury hotel. We opted for a modern space with a focus on clean lines. The juxtaposition of the rich woods (wenge, dark walnut) against the fresh white quartzite and glass mosaic, creates a high contrast and crisp look throughout the space.” The finishing within the bathroom was, unsurprisingly for a luxury ship, of the highest standard. All of the suites on board feature custom-made WCs, LED mirrors, taps and showers by Grohe and Hansgrohe. The Reflections suite includes the Scelta bath from Hoesch and NeoGlass mosaic wall tiling from Sicis. It is the structural element that elevates the space from great to incredible i www.kb-network.co.uk

“We knew we were taking a risk with the glass cantilevered shower, but the client put their trust in our team to deliver a one of a kind design”

however. Bucci explains that the cantilevered shower was a technological feat from both an engineering and electronic standpoint: “The element had to be structural in that it was built into the ship’s exterior, but also beautiful. Both of these qualities were carefully coordinated between our office, the client and the shipyard in order to produce such striking results.”

There are also a host of other issues inherent in designing a bathroom on a ship. The stricter health & safety and fire codes that regulate ships always bring with them more unattractive, yet necessary pieces of equipment such as alarms, hatches and vents. The trick is to try and design a space so that those elements seem to disappear, especially when designing a high end space such as this.

Creating this highly unique space was one thing, but turning it into the ultimate in luxury bathrooms required some clever functionality. The shower uses airinjection technology to boost low water pressure (which is common on ships) to create a more voluminous downpour.

The constant motion of the ship is also something that must be kept in mind, and accordingly, light fixtures must always be secured to rigid rods and all shelving must have built in rails to prevent objects from falling.

Adjustable lighting is also a feature, introducing an element of chromotherapy designed to help balance a person’s energy. All of these elements can be adjusted to each individual guest’s preference and stored using the shower’s wireless ‘RainBrain’ system. This system acts as a sort of ‘shower butler’ that controls shower operation, jet types, as well as temperature, and it can be pre-set for up to five users. Unusually for a bathroom, the issue of soundproofing was also one that had to be considered. Bucci explains: “One of the big challenges with this space was its location on the ship. While it had its clear advantages – the panoramic views most obviously – it was placed directly adjacent to the ships’ very popular night club. The suites needed to be acoustically isolated in their construction, with thicker walls and sound insulation.”

Bucci adds that an extra challenge with this particular project was that it had to be developed fairly late in the ship’s overall construction schedule. “When the idea for the suites was brought to us by the client, the ship’s construction was already underway, and the steel already set,” she says. “We had to work with the existing conditions and design a space that was completely unique, but also cohesive with the structure of the ship.” Creating a space like this demands brave thinking from a designer. Bucci says that the end result surpassed even their team’s own expectations. “The master bathroom materialised better than we could have ever imagined. We knew we were taking a risk with the glass cantilevered shower, but the client put their trust in our team to deliver a one of a kind design, and we certainly did so.” i

BG Studio | www.bgstudio.com

New Wave Design Francesca Bucci, co-owner of BG Studio, on creating a bathroom masterpiece…

“The primary design challenge for our bathroom was to create big features in a small space. We emphasised the most dramatic element – the sea views – by floating the open vanity and mirrors against a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and cantilevering a stunning glass shower off the side of the ship. A material palette of dark walnut, crisp white quartz and sophisticated Sicis murals gives the space even more visual punch and a clean, modern attitude.”

Luxury Goes Large

Celebrity Reflection is the newest and largest ship in the five-strong Celebrity fleet. Among numerous other features that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find on a ship, it features The Lawn Club, a park-like environment where green grass grows on the ship’s top open decks. Along with the Reflection Suite, the ship’s five lavish Signature Suites – also designed by BG Studio – are located in a private area of the 14th deck. Comfortably accommodating up to four guests, each 441 sq ft suite is complete with floor-to- ceiling windows up to 10 ft high and a 118 sq ft veranda designed to make the most of the views. The Reflection and Signature suite area of the ship can only be accessed by an exclusive key card, allowing families or groups of up to 26 guests to enjoy their own private six suite cruise ship experience.

Can kitchen designers learn from the techniques employed by restaurant designers to create luxury eating establishments? We ask experts for their take on the ‘good practice’ that could work equally well in both the hospitality and the residential arenas

Something that we all aspire to at one time or another is to have a bit of luxury in our own homes. The typical example of this – and something frequently referred to on our pages – is the consumer yearning to recreate the hotel spa effect in their own domestic bathroom. Bringing that sumptuous, high-end feel to create a welcoming and enjoyable space to linger is the goal of all bathroom designers now that this room has become about more than just function.

often get clients who want to create a kind of homeliness in their kitchens in order to create a space that is unique and personable. For example, a client may opt for a handmade or crackle glazed tile for their open kitchen to add give a ‘lived in’ feel.”

“It’s true, that residential interiors already pick up on a lot of these elements through the connection of the dining and kitchen space in many homes, which in some ways may have also influenced restaurant design to an extent,” she says. “At Whyte & Brown, a new free-range, chicken and egg restaurant concept just opened in London’s Carnaby Street, we devised that the head chef take his place at the customer side of the pass as a key feature, to ensure that he can oversee every dish which leaves the kitchen. This gives the customers an honest view of the kitchen operations and again highlights the theatre aspect.

Interior Designer Afroditi Krassa | www.afroditi.com

Similarly, we often think of eating out as a valued indulgence – and just maybe that’s about more than just not having to do the cooking and the cleaning up afterwards. Restaurants offer something altogether more than just good food. Restaurateurs strive to create a convivial environment that

CEO of the Rockwell Group Rockwell Group | www.rockwellgroup.com

A Sense of Theatre Mark Bithrey, Design Director & Owner of B3 Designers, says: “Our experience with virtually every restaurateur that we work with is that the crucial factors are theatricality, escapism, and being distinctive in a way that is true to the food concept and dining experience.” In more broad terms, he says this could be described as creating a stage set that centres upon the food and dining experience. “The honesty, theatricality and celebrating the food as hero is of course reflected in the growing desire for open kitchens or views into the kitchen as part of the overall dining experience. But we

Laura Elwick, an Interior Designer at London design studio Blacksheep, agrees that the element of theatre is at the top of the list when it comes to priorities for restaurant interiors. Blacksheep works across a range of different dining styles from high spec contemporary fine dining spaces to mid-market rustic industrial restaurants, and more and more contemporary restaurants now reflect the theatrical approach by adopting an open kitchen format, allowing the food, chefs, service style and cooking techniques to take centre stage.

Welcoming, interactive spaces are the hallmark of numerous restaurant designs by interior designer Afroditi Krassa, including spaces for restaurant chain Café Rouge (above)

“We always look at creating spaces which offer the guest an experience, something they can walk away from but remember, something which is very different from a residential environment. However, I think with design in the home becoming appreciated by more people, some of these experiences are easily transferable into the residential space.” The ‘experience’ aspect of a restaurant has taken on new dimensions, with food being served with some of the preparation left for the customer to complete, or presented on ceramic tiles – and even house bricks! – for dramatic effect and the ultimate talking point. Interior designer Afroditi Krassa says that this kind of customer participation has been a part of recent client projects that she has undertaken. “We picked on this movement quite early

on. With the right type of food, this could be a way to make entertaining casual yet more interactive, creating more conversation and an even more memorable dinner. Your guests arrive and not all the food needs to be prepared and formally presented like in the past, but becomes part of the experience.”

some of your favourite culinary items in open view such as wooden utensils or jam jars or artwork are great items to reflect individual personalities. Conversely, if your approach to cooking and style is more minimal and pared back you may have a décor in your kitchen that reflects this.”

Residential Crossover B3 Designers’ Bithrey believes there are a number of techniques that can be transferred from the restaurant to the residential kitchen with good effect: “You might want to incorporate a counter with seating that allows you to interact with guests while you are preparing the meal.

Blacksheep’s Elwick sees the gap between the interior style of a restaurant and that of a domestic kitchen becoming smaller. “A current key trend is to take a restaurant space and give it an almost domestic feel with regards to comfort, levels of intimacy, and zoning – rather than ending up with a large cavernous space with rows of tables, it is divided down into smaller areas. This is something we did at Whyte & Brown, where we almost created a series of room sets, allowing each space to have its own identity with something special in every

“In terms of the ‘honesty’ element of the space, you might consider the kitchen to be the hub of your home space and fill it with items in view that reflect you in some way; this may be by having

area. This was achieved with furniture elements and changing levels rather than physically building walls.” It is a simple trick but one which has a major impact on the impact of the space. “Focussing on zoning with furniture and creating group arrangements within a residential setting (rather than physically dividing every space with walls), could be a way of introducing a similar technique used in restaurants.” Changing Lifestyles Consumer expectations on both the dining out and domestic fronts have definitely been elevated over the past couple of years. People have higher expectations in terms of both the product that they are eating and how it should be enjoyed. B3 Designer’s Bithrey says: “Consumers are much more savvy when it comes to cooking, as well i

as the quality and provenance of the ingredients and want unique and memorable experiences when they dine. Creating the interior backdrop for these experiences has a lot to do with attention to detail and having a look and feel that is appropriate to the function of the space. “Great examples of this include Pizza East’s approach to serving wine in tumblers as oppose to wine glasses, which immediately gives a casual, relaxed feel to drinking as well as Polpo’s bar counter where you can enjoy a casual drink and sharing plates inches away from the bar tender which gives a fantastic epicurean approach to a drinking and dining experience.”

Food for Thought David Rockwell, Founder and CEO of the Rockwell Group architecture and design studio, believes that creativity in the restaurant sector is currently riding particularly high…

Blacksheep’s Elwick agrees that consumers are increasingly switched on, not just about the cooking and food quality, but with a wider grasp of design style that appears to go hand in hand with that: “Guests are now much more design savvy and have an appreciation of commercial design. Trends used in restaurant design seem to move into the residential sector much quicker than before too, such as the craze for industrial fittings which the high-street retailers have picked up and are selling to all levels of the market.”

“Food itself is big. Food is now an expression of your personality and character – what you eat, where you eat it and how you eat it talks volumes about who you are.”

Krassa believes that trends in this sector are fast changing because of the rapidly evolving role that food plays in our lives today:

Ultimately though, people’s perception of food has changed. They are willing to experiment, challenge traditional recipes and

She adds that where the Zeitgeist was fashion in the 60s and furniture or interiors in the 90s, food has arguably assumed that role for today. “There are more restaurants opening, more pop ups, cooking books, apps, TV shows, and whilst celebrity chefs are still important, there are chefs that aren’t on TV but have a great following on Twitter.”

‘travel’ through food. “Diners are more willing to try new restaurants – especially with the explosion of casual dining options – as well as trying new recipes at home,” says Krassa. “They also want to learn. There is a strong educational element behind all of this.” She adds: “An eclectic and relaxed style in restaurants is still in demand and doesn't seem to be waning. In a way, restaurants are drawing inspiration from the home and not the other way around. The mixing and matching of reclaimed furniture is still of the moment. Perhaps it’s the homely, human feel in a public space that is appealing most to both restaurateurs and customers alike.” i

“I’m really interested in restaurant design that creates opportunities for people to gather and connect. We’re moving away from generic, large spaces to smaller, cosier spaces that foster more intimate connections. Technology can really encourage people to celebrate together. I think interactive design in restaurants separated people in the past. Now we’re entering a new phase where it is enhancing and facilitating a better dining experience. I’m really fascinated with the trend of pop-up restaurants and portability. Pop-up restaurants began as a concept for restaurateurs with the idea that not every restaurant is permanent. Temporary structures allow for so much more flexibility and open the door for new surprises and techniques.”

The radiator remains one of the big design conundrums in the home. Long considered an awkward but indispensable item, it was often perceived to be a hinderance in creating a beautiful room layout. In more recent times however, it has taken on a new role as a stylish focal point in its own right. Alberico Crosetta, Brand Manager at Italian radiator manufacturer Antrax IT, said: “The radiator was involved in an extraordinary revolution that has transformed it from a purely functional product to an aesthetic design object that adds value to a living space.

“The market is increasingly oriented to products in which the perception of quality is more prevalent than the technical qualities.” He warns though, that this is a product category in which price remains a determining issue: “The cost remains the most decisive factor in the choice of the radiator. The consumer no longer buys instinctively and often wants to save money when they buy any high price-category product.” Crosetta says that, hand-inhand with this cost-conscious consumer outlook, green issues have been brought increasingly to the fore. “The consumer is getting more

and more attentive to sustainability and energy saving, two perogatives that allow a consequent money saving. In order to meet these requests, manufacturers are producing both refined and functional design products.”

Barbara Payne

The eco theme figures prominently right now, not least because of ever-rising fuel prices and the impact this has on households of all sizes. Barbara Payne, Head of Design and Marketing at Bisque Radiators, said: “There are some definite trends emerging for 2014. i www.kb-network.co.uk

The first of these is a continuing emphasis on eco-friendly, high efficiency heating solutions, while the other sees products using design threads and narratives from earlier eras.” As with most industries, the recession has had a major impact on revenue in the radiator and boiler manufacturing industry. However, research has revealed that expected investment returns in the housing and commercial building markets should see revenue return to modest growth over the next five years. Dean Chughtai, General Manager at MHS Radiators, believes that radiators have developed a great deal, both in terms of design and performance over the last 20 years: “Modern radiators can now offer high heat outputs, as well as operate with low levels of water content, which is beneficial to end users both in terms of energy efficiency and cost savings. “With such a wide variety of materials now available, there is a large selection of designer radiators on the market. Of course, with household budgets remaining tight, end users are opting for products that not only offer high levels of quality and output, but also exceptional value for money.” i

The popularity of radiators is not in doubt. Of the 26 million homes in the UK, more than 23.5 million of them have ‘wet’ central heating. There are around 190 million radiators in-situ in UK properties, while radiators are still used for the vast majority of new builds as well. With more than 70% of the radiator market estimated to be in renovation/ refurbishment and, with the efficiency of products having improved significantly, like-for-like replacements (in conjunction with a high efficiency boiler and appropriate valves and controls) can provide householders with betterperforming systems at relatively low cost. “There is now an increased focus on design-orientated products with more minimalist, contemporary styles, with a definite trend towards custom design in innovative and unusual shapes, colours and finishes,” says Chughtai. “Changes in the breadth and availability of manufacturing materials in recent decades have resulted in polished stainless steel, chrome finishing and high output aluminium further strengthening their appeal, making radiators more affordable and aesthetically appealing to the masses. In terms of product development, the focus is on improving thermal performance, energy efficiency and control/flexibility, with a view to achieving lower running costs. “As long as radiator manufacturers can continue to produce innovative and appealing designs, the central heating market – and the radiator sector in particular – should continue to grow steadily in the medium to long term.”i

The Radiator Company has extended its eco efficient product offering with the launch of Reno. The new designs deliver thermal efficiency, ultra low water content and a high heat output. With a ProTex Plus washing machine consumers can now wash even their most delicate silk and woollen garments with peace of mind. Featuring the only wool programme on the market today that has a ‘cool down’ phase at the end of the wash, this machine protects fabrics from the shock of a cold water rinse at the end of a cycle to prevent shrinking. It is so gentle that it has even been awarded the highly-coveted Woolmark Gold certificate. With AEG’s steam function you can ‘refresh’ a suit and remove creases as an alternative to dry cleaning. A ProTex Plus washing machine generates steam at a lower temperature of 70°C for extra gentleness, making it ideal for dry clean only garments. AEG Trade Sales 08445 610561 www.aeg.co.uk

Following on the heels of its launch last November and its early success with retailers, Bushboard is releasing its pioneering ‘installer-ready’ M-Stone range of quartz worksurfaces which draws on the feedback from retailers and over 500 installers who have already attended Bushboard’s free one-day training and installation course. By popular demand, two brand new colours have been added. These are Pewter Stone, a modish grey colour and Almond Stone, a contemporary neutral which add to Ivory Stone, Black Diamond Stone, Black Gem Stone and White Gem Stone. The palette reflects the top six selling colours in the quartz sector following extensive market research. In addition, the thickness of the quartz material has been changed from 25mm to 20mm, which brings it in line with the standard thickness in the quartz market, while also facilitating even easier on-site installation as it’s lighter to handle.

di designer | design inspiration

Building Photography by Morley von Sternberg

My Design Inspiration by Wayne Hemingway David Jones Photography

“The Royal Festival Hall and the South Bank Centre in London are a constant source of inspiration to me. The DNA of the site is a festival venue that was delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of creative folk as a ‘tonic to the nation’ after the austerity of the war, using a bomb ravaged site on what was then a largely pg unloved south bank of the Thames. This in itself provides a great precedent for regeneration.

66

The use of colour, the creation of a site for the public to dance, linger and be merry and the – what was then challenging, but is today considered timeless has unveiled its major new kitchen brand, and it has grand plans for –Symphony ‘mid century modern’ aesthetic is a constant source providing with a team previously unimaginable level of personalisation of referenceconsumers to the Hemingway in our urban design, product design and for our festivals. The inspirational way that the South Bank Centre is programmed, the generosity of its spaces, the way it keeps evolving and the passion of the team there is uplifting.”
