External Social auditing team validates the interventions by interacting with the community
SOCIAL AUDIT After completion of two years, Hand in Hand India has handed over the task of sustaining the development of Panapuram panchayat to the Village Development Committee or VDC. For the first time under Hand in Hand India’s guidance the VDC conducted a social audit of the Village Uplift Programme. Approximately five members from the Panchayat conducted an audit for their village, in the presence of two external members who were students belonging to Department of Social Work from a reputed college. The community members completed a prescribed evaluation form, providing an overall picture of the efficacy and impact of the concerned project. The following information was captured through the questionnaire: •
Data (quantitative and qualitative) in each of the five key areas – Women’s Empowerment, Child Labour Elimination and Education, Health, Citizens’ Centres and Environment.

The evaluator encouraged the stakeholders to narrate their own experiences and that of their friends and colleagues so as to capture the programme’s impact. The villagers were expected and encouraged to fill in the gaps expressed through the audit. Hand in Hand India will continue to provide handholding support to the village, especially with regard to microfinance and educational activities.
PROGRAMME OUTCOME •
Savings habit has been inculcated among SHG members. As a result, families’ dependency on money lenders during emergencies has reduced.

Women empowerment has led to promotion of gender equity. Women have more say in family decisions now.

Usage of banking services and accessing government offices have increased in the village.

Family-based enterprises have resulted in improvement in income levels.

Slow learners have shown improvement in subjects they found tough through the Children Learning Centre

Panchayat is child labor-free. All children in the 6 to 14 age group are enrolled in school.

Awareness programme on education and counseling meetings have enabled children perform well in their examinations. The School Management Committee (SMC) has been functioning efficiently; through continuous meetings and trainings, the SMC has also been monitoring the school functions.

There is an increased awareness on computer (IT related), rights and government schemes.
•
There has been increased awareness among women in safe drinking water, personal hygiene, maternity & child health, nutrition, anaemia and community health.
•
Through the medical camps, people who have been affected by eye ailments, stomach ache and respiratory problems have been identified and counseled for further treatment in Government Hospitals. They have undergone further treatment and have been cured.

There is an improvement in health and hygiene conditions of the villagers.

Cleaner and greener village has been created.

PROGRAMME IMPACT •
Fifteen Self Help Groups formed

Nine women who attended tailoring training have bought sewing machines started their own enterprise

Through the support of community and Village Development Committee members, Children’s Day was celebrated; competitions were held and prizes were awarded to the winners.
•
A summer camp has been conducted. Village children attended and spent their vacation in a meaningful manner. Arts, handicrafts, singing, dancing and basic computers were taught in the camps. It was a great chance for the children to identify and exhibit their hidden talents.
•
The periodical veterinary camps were helpful in controlling seasonal diseases like foot-and-mouth in cows & buffalos and worms in goats & sheep.
•
Community sensitized on sanitation and environmental cleanliness.
•
Refurbishing the Anganwadis (day-care centres) and making it child friendly has made learning more fun filled for the tiny tots.
•
Through the anemia control programme, those who have a count of less than 11 HB were treated and given counseling, provided FST tablets led them brought out of anemia and healthy living and using sanitary napkins among adolescent girls has been improved and keep them more hygienic
•
The improved economic conditions have made families self-sustainable and helped them lead a better lifestyle in terms of education and other aspects of life.
•
The level of awareness of education has increased. All children in the village are expected to pursue education, which will increase employment opportunities in the future.
•
Villagers are beginning to use the knowledge gained through health awareness programmes for a healthier lifestyle.
•
There have been some attempts to bridge the digital divide between urban – rural India. The level of awareness of computer and Government welfare schemes has increased among the villagers.

The village youth have got an opportunity to learn computer courses and they have gained an additional skill. It is easier for them to get jobs in the nearby towns.

There has been an increase in the awareness of Right to Information Act (RTI) and Right to Education Act (RTE). Villagers are equipped to get their rights from the Government.

A better living environment (clean and green) has been created and a movement towards efficient management of natural resources has been created as well.
CHALLENGES •
Due to urbanization, youths are moving to nearby towns for livelihood. It is a big threat to agriculture
•
Open defecation leads to diseases and the habit must be changed by motivating them to construct and use toilets
•
It is a huge challenge to get the community to take ownership of the project in order to ensure long-term sustainability. The attempt has been to bring in an attitudinal change in the community to attain sustainability.
FUTURE PLANS Hand in Hand India continues to engage with the community of Panapuram with various ongoing activities, such as microfinance loans and monitoring of child labour through Village Development Committee & Parents Teachers Association. Hand in Hand India will also work with the community members through the Village Development Committee (VDC) to ensure the sustainability of the various programmes.
