Heritage Business School Overview Inspired by the noble cause of education and philanthropic zeal, a group of twenty-two like minded industrialists in Kolkata established in 1990 the Kalyan Bharti Trust (KBT) , a charitable educational establishment, to promote and provide higher education in the country and, in particular, the State of West Bengal. KBT founded The Heritage School and Heritage Institute of Technology, both in 2001, to create a center of excellence in school and technical education respectively in eastern India. Management Education Centre (MEC) was set up in 2003 with an aim to be a leader in management education in the country and to be at par with the best on world. In 2003 MEC became a separate distinct identity as Heritage Business School(HBS), which almost instantaneously started attracting the best possible faculty. HBS has one of the finest infrastructures in West Bengal. A harmonious integration of traditional a values with modern outlook is the guiding principle behind the development of the academic environment that constitutes the basic philosophy of the Heritage Group of Institutions.

An Overview With the growing challenges in environment posed by globalization of Indian economy followed by signing of GATT, industry and academia cannot grow and develop in isolation. Management institutions today have to interact very closely with industry, on one hand, and the community, on the other. Keeping the global scenario in view, the Kalyan Bharti Trust established the Management Education Centre (MEC) under the banner of Heritage Institute of Technology (HIT) with a view to impart management education. MEC, HIT is now formally called Heritage Business School (HBS).The affairs of HBS are managed by the Kalyan Bharti Trust which in itself is the brainchild of a conglomerate of Kolkata based noted industrialists. As such, it has been possible for the Institute to establish and maintain close liaison with many industrial houses. The Institute organizes various courses during semester / summer breaks conjointly with different industries, which not only supplement the University’s syllabi but also provide the students with a cutting edge, which is so very vital in making the students employable and enterprising in future. A harmonious integration of our valued traditions with modern techno-outlook is the guiding principle behind the development of infrastructure and other facilities at HBS.

The MBA Programmes Heritage Business School, Kolkata, is ranked 4th in the Eastern Zone by Careers 360 ( Outlook Group ) for the year 2012- 2013 HBS offers a two-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme for the twelfth consecutive batch (2014-2016). The programme is administered over a period of 24 months. The programme is modelled on the Semester System. The first year includes compulsory courses and during the second year the students have both compulsory and specialization courses. The primary objective of the programme is to provide the students with an opportunity to develop conceptual and analytical skills, with an understanding of the Latest Technology for a global vision that evolves the capability to anticipate and manage changes. The key is to encourage active and independent learning.

The two-year MBA Programme is NBA accredited, approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India and the Degree is awarded by the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT).

Selection Process l

Selection for the MBA programme is through CAT, CMAT and also through WBJEMAT. Candidates with Common Admission Test (CAT) or Common Admission Management Test (CMAT) score card will be short-listed on the basis of their scores. Foreign and NRI candidates will have to submit their GMAT scores. Candidates opting for the WBJEMAT will be directly admitted through central counseling.

Group Discussion and Interview The short-listed candidates are called for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Past Academic Record of candidates and work experiences are also considered for final selection.

Student Related Activities Students’ Bi-annual Online E- magazine: The maiden volume of HBS Students’ Bi-annual E- magazine named “NON LINEAR” has been released on 4th April 2014. The theme for this volume is ‘Management through Scriptures and Existence’. The word “Scripture” refers to our epics and Vedas and embodies different management practices contained in those scriptures. “Existence” refers to Nature’s Creationinsects like bees and ants whose way of living contains so many management practices like team work, leadership etc. The title word ‘linear’ has been formed by taking alphabets from names of different Management Gurus like Alderson, Miller, Owen, Kotler, Fayol and Drucker.

PRARAMBH 2014: "PRARAMBH" is the annual fest organized by HBS. Students of HBS organized “PRARAMBH 2014” on the 4th and 5th of April, 2014. HBS bagged 1st prize in Gaming and Fashion Show and 2nd prize in Solo Dance. The events included: Gaming, Business Plan, Role playing, Debates, T-shirt painting, Ad Making, Fashion show, Sudoku, Band Performance etc. St. Xavier’s, Ashutosh College, IISWBM, JIS, HIT(B.Tech) participated in the individual events. Red Bull and Eagle were the key sponsors of PRARAMBH 2014.

Alumni Association: Heritage Business School website (www.hbs.edu.in) has an Alumni page on which all Alumni register. This site provides Alumni the facility to communicate amongst themselves and exchange updated news about their Professional advancements, their personal details and also available opportunities in industry. Alumni Meets are organized at regular intervals through which all ex-students meet each other and also maintain a nostalgic bonding with the Alma Mater. Meetings of Alumni are held every month and the Alumni are actively involved in updating the website. Alumni are invited regularly by HBS to come to the School and share their experiences and thoughts with existing students and Faculty. Annual Alumni Meet is held every year on the fourth Saturday of August.

Academic Excellence: Mr. Karunakanth Singh,bagged a Gold medal in 2005 from the WBUT for being the topper in MBA among all the colleges.

Ms. Amrita Bhattacharya was awarded Gold Medal by WBUT for standing first in MBA 2007 amongst all colleges.

On the basis of results of the MBA examination 2009, Mr. Bratin Maity stood first, Ms. Gargee De stood second and Mr. Tapas Kumar holder stood third in the University among all the colleges and were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals by WBUT.

Of the Second pass-out batch of 2007-2009 of MBA programme, Mr. Arnab Mondal stood first, Mr. Anand Seth stood second and Mr. Arijit Mondal stood third in the University among all the successful candidates and were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals respectively by WBUT.

Students of HBS perform will in the University Examinations with an average pass percentage of above 98%. The highest SGPA so far obtained by a student is 9.2 in the scale of 10. First batch of MBA students passed out in 2005. Student Activities There is a Students’ Council constituted with sub-committees like Cultural, Academic, Magazine, Games and Sports and various Clubs to encourage and organize various co-curricular and extra curricular activities. A management workshop - PRARAMBH - is organized by the MBA students every year, in which management students from all over Kolkata participate in debates, quizzes role plays, management games, extempore, presentations etc. The annual Cultural Festival - ECLECIA - and the Annual Tech. Fest DAKSHH is organized regularly in which all students actively participate.

To encourage entrepreneurial activities, an E-Cell (OORJA) has been formed for coordinating with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN).

The Institute’s Foundation Day which falls on Teachers’ Day, (5th September), is also celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence.

A team of students of Heritage Business School participated in the Business Plan Competition held by NASSCOM as part of its Zonal meet during July 17th and 18th 2014. This team reached the Semi-Final Round of the competition

Counselling of Students: The motto of the Counselling Cell at HBS is -”To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life.” The sole purpose is to help students to help themselves through exploration of their capacities and potentials, and to create a feeling of self confidence which will give them a more positive outlook on life. Students talk in confidence to the full-time Counsellor about any issue that bothers them either academically or psychologically.


Training & Placement Heritans are achievers - an eclectic mix of ambition, creativity, enthusiasm and integrity. The Institute is relentless in its pursuit of excellence by nurturing talents with exceptional creative ability. Training and Placement Cell is the core department in a B-School which compliments the effort of Placement officers and faculty members by organizing value-added programmes. For most management students, “Placement” is the key word. The Placement Cell, guided by a set of rules and principles strives to maintain warm relations with companies. We strongly believe that students’ prime objective should be to make an informed choice about the right career move. We facilitate them to do so by helping them build a career-focused development plan, taking into account their strengths, skills, interests and aspirations. Industry Experts and leaders are invited to our campus and our curriculum reflects the future challenges business graduates would face. The corporate guest lectures, work-shops, seminars helps the students to be exposed to the corporate world and to compete in the global arena. A constant interface with the Managers and other professionals from the companies gives the students a better understanding of their subject matter than what they could learn theoretically. Training and Placement Cell also makes concerted effort to facilitate better student – alumni interaction. Alumni members of Heritage Business School possess a rich body of knowledge and experience of the industry they are working in. Working with the alumni association, Training and Placement Cell also provides unique mentoring opportunities to the students. The pairing of alumni-student is important for the career growth of the student.

Pre-Placement Talk The Pre-Placement Talk is a platform where the company officials address the batch about the company’s background, philosophy, values, ethos and share details about the profiles offered, the eligibility criteria, the selection processes, compensation and other details. The PPT facilitates the process of budding managers building their aspirations to join the corporate world. The companies look forward to attracting the cream of the talent from leading business school like Heritage. The thorough selection process at Heritage culminates in the evolution of highly competitive student community, with valuable work experience cut across various sectors, such as financial analysis, portfolio management, consultancy services, sales and distribution providing an opportunity for the companies to select from a large varied talent pool.

Summer Internship Programme

The Summer Internship provides the students with opportunities to apply what they have learnt in the classroom, while getting a hands-on experience of the Corporate world. The students learn to work in a multi-functional team and get a chance to further explore their areas of interest. During the summer training, the students are given a specific topic on which they Research and submit a Report both to the College as well as to the particular organization . The Programme is monitored by Faculty members who interact both with the students as well as with the concerned Industry Executives.

The Infrastructure Campus The campus is on a well-designed and beautifully landscaped greenery. The ambience is unique for its serenity, conducive to intellectual pursuits. The campus provides an atmosphere that motivates students to grow. The Business School has an airconditioned Auditorium, Seminar Halls, Conference Room, Language Lab, GD/PI room, well-equipped Model Classrooms, well-stocked Library, Computer Laboratory, Banking facility, Health care centre, Cafeteria etc. to meet all the requirements of even the most discerning student.

Classrooms & Tutorial Rooms The classrooms at HBS provide a conducive environment needed for learning. We, at HBS, pro-actively use tools for Technology enabled learning. All the classrooms at HBS are equipped with all the modern teaching aids needed to support technology enhanced learning. All the classrooms are thus equipped with computers, multimedia projectors, OHPs, and other audio-visual tools. In addition to the conventional LAN connectivity in all the classrooms, the classrooms are also WiFi enabled. Separate tutorial rooms with seating capacity for sixty students are also available for special classes. The latest Audio-Visual equipment supplemented by lapel microphone systems facilitate a smooth two way communication.

Computer Lab The Computer Centre has been set up as a centralized service facility so that students can use this for various purposes, such as, (a) Programming, (b) Project works, (c) Preparation of seminar materials, etc. The facility includes 183 Terminals along with printers and Internet Facility with 20 Mbps (1: 1) leased line. It is directly linked with MITSOM network with a dedicated lease line internet connection with a bandwidth of 20 Mbps. There is a facility for online teaching and practical. MITSOM has two server loaded with various software like Oracle, Visual Studio, Advanced Java, Page Maker, Corel Draw, Linux which are accessible from all work stations. A very high capacity Network Storage facility integrated with an automated data backup and recovery system caters to the data storage requirement of all the users. Network printing facility is available on a wide variety of printers such as Inkjet, Laser, Line and Dot Matrix Printers. All these printers can be accessed from anywhere in the campus. Other equipment available in the centre includes Notebooks, CD/DVD Writers, High quality Scanners and LCD Projectors.

Library HBS library is acknowledged as one of the best in Kolkata. It has been our endeavor to provide both students and corporate with the best possible research material including the latest writings of management gurus, popular management texts, classical books on management and much more.

The computerized MBA Library is housed in an air-conditioned hall of about 224 sq.m. with attached reading room for around 60 readers at a time. This is an open access library. The library is equipped with Internet and educational CD facilities. It has a collection of about 1071 titles and 10005 volumes. It subscribes to 91 periodicals / journals

(National: 52, and International: 39) and the Online Databases and E-journals like Economic & Political Weekly (EPW), Sage Online, J GATE Social Science & Management, RMIT: Informit Business Collection are also available.

In addition to the data mentioned above, users of the Library have access to a Statistical Package pertaining to Manage Information (SPSS).

On-line access (LIBSYS) facility and photo copy facility are also provided in the library. A Book Bank has been created so that a set of text books can be issued to the member Students. These are to be returned after their Semester Examination is over.

Seminar Hall A state-of-the-art Seminar Hall with a seating capacity of 150 is used for conducting seminars, conferences, cultural programmes, students’ events and other important events of HBS. Many of the Middle and Senior Management personnel from leading companies have participated in the various Management Development Programmes organized by Heritage in the Seminar Hall. Every weekend there are sessions on industry interface in which students interact with Professionals from the industry.

Language Lab Heritage has pioneered the initiative of scientifically assisting students in preparing for Group Discussions or Job Interviews by developing an Audio Interactive Language Lab. This move is mainly directed towards making the students display the right internal personality driven message to their recruiters during corporate placements, group discussions or interviews that are organized in the campus.

GD & PI Centre GD & PI Centre provides the HBS and its Department of Training and Placement the ability to conduct Tests, Interviews and Group Discussions when prospective employers visit the Institute to recruit students. The Centre is a completely standalone unit and has a well furnished centrally air-conditioned facility with 60-seater capacity equipped with presentation and teaching aids.After each GD/PI, each student is shown a recorded version of his/her performance alongwith reviews of Faculty and suggested measures for improvement.

A well equipped air-conditioned Conference Hall serves the requirements of weekly and periodic meetings like Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. HBS firmly believes in providing its students exposure to national and international experts through regular National and International conferences/symposia and workshops hosted in the campus. It is with this view that a wide choice of modern conference facilities have been meticulously planned and incorporated in the Conference Hall.
