Letter to the

Community

“When life kicks you, let it kick you forward.” That’s how Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, put it when she talked about her battle with breast cancer. That is a trial I understand, having faced my own breast cancer diagnosis in March 2013.

Thanks to early detection and the excellent care I received at Cone Health, I am cancer free today. Cancer treatment, any cancer treatment, is complex with a myriad of doctors, diagnostic tests, medical bills and treatment decisions to be made. Despite a nursing background and 30 years’ experience in health care, when it is your body tattooed with radiation targets and it’s you in a thin, open-back cotton gown – you feel vulnerable and overwhelmed.

Feelings of vulnerability and being overwhelmed stayed with me as I healed from surgery and began radiation treatments. My experience made me more acutely aware of how vital the work of our grantees is to our community. Our grantees support the people of our community at some of their toughest, most vulnerable moments: When they have just heard their diagnosis for the first time; grappled with chronic disease without health insurance; learned they are going to be parents sooner than expected; or understood that addiction is a lifetime struggle. And, the goal is always the same – move forward to a new beginning – a new place of hope, with more tools, education and understanding than before.

Our grantee partners are the builders, connectors and mediators, doing the tough work of supporting people every day. Their efforts to improve the health and well-being of people in greater Greensboro guide and inspire us every day. We are privileged to work with them…moving forward every day.

Cone Health Foundation distributed $4.6 million in grants to 38 Greensboro-area nonprofit organizations. The median award amount was $55,000, and 52 percent of grant awards were made to increase access to health care. These awards support agencies working in the Foundation’s four focus areas of grantmaking. Some fall outside of these defined categories and support community collaborations.

Cone Health Foundation continues to make a difference in the health of our communities. Below are highlights of just a few of our efforts to measurably improve the health of people in the greater Greensboro area.

Cone Health Foundation funded:

Access to Health Care • Access to comprehensive prenatal care for 347 women with 96 percent of program babies weighing a healthy weight.

• Primary care services to nearly 300 behavioral health clients resulting in reduced Emergency Department visits. More than half (56 percent) of the patients had normal or improved blood pressure, and improved body mass index over the year.

Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention • Seven medically accurate, comprehensive sexuality education programs that reached 2,722 teens, encouraging them to make responsible choices, including postponing sexual intercourse and increasing condom use.

• Two secondary adolescent pregnancy prevention programs that touched 295 young women with the goal of reducing the incidence of repeat births, increasing high school graduation rates, and ensuring that participating teens deliver healthy birth weight babies.

HIV/AIDS • Eleven programs reaching 3,262 people that educate about the threat of HIV and how to prevent it.

• Two clinical settings – one medical and one dental – that served a combined 2,844 patients by increasing access to care, improving health outcomes for people living with HIV, and decreasing the disparities in health outcomes and HIV transmission.

Substance Abuse & Mental Health • An academy that gave training in substance abuse and mental health best practice interventions to 303 local providers representing 80 different agencies.

• Education for 4,299 people to learn about medicine misuse among teens, and a community engagement initiative to reduce the impact of prescription and over-the-counter drug misuse.
