Aging Out Loud Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s celebration of Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, “Age Out Loud,” strived to give aging a new voice—one that reflects what today’s older adults have to say. The purpose of this theme shines a light on many important trends. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others. What it means to age has changed, and we celebrate the art of “aging gracefully.” To keep the ball rolling, The Clinton Presbyterian Community celebrated a new “Out Loud” activity every week during the month of May. The first Out Loud event took place at the M.S. Bailey Child Development Center in Clinton. Several residents volunteered their time to visit the children in their classrooms Martha Simmons reads to a to Read Out Loud during student at the M.S. Bailey Child their story time. Recognizing Donors as Heaven-Sent

F

aith-based, charitable, not-for-profit … these are just a few words that can be used to describe the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina organization and its mission of serving older adults. “Faith-based,” “charitable,” and “not-for profit” also hint at the crucial role that generous donors have played in our organization from the very beginning. Motivated by faith and charity, the churches and individuals that support us financially are true partners with us in this special ministry. This issue of Community Connections is therefore dedicated to our donors. Without them, we could not continue to serve as our constituents have come to expect. As the Letter of James says, “Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (1:17). Therefore, we recognize our donors as God’s own blessing, sent from heaven. Thank you to our donors for your part in making this organization the outstanding ministry it is today!

Let PCSC Give Back

P

resbyterian Communities of South Carolina is delighted to recognize our supporters in this special donor issue of Community Connections. We are truly blessed to receive generous support from churches, presbyteries and individuals who keep our ministry strong and impactful. While you will find much inside this issue celebrating the donors who support PCSC and those we serve, I also want to highlight that PCSC stands ready to support and resource our churches. How can PCSC serve your church? In a number of ways. Do you have a weekly program series? We would be glad to send a speaker that could address various aging-related issues, such as: • Dementia care • The principles of Medicare • The spirituality of aging • How to select a retirement community • Nutrition • And more While these topics would be of interest to seniors groups, we believe children of aging parents would also benefit. If you are interested in a more detailed workshop on an aging-related topic, perhaps for caregivers of older adults, let us know and we will work to help meet your need.

PCSC is also a resource when churches need a supply preacher. Franklin Fant, our Director of Church Relations, is available to preach and lead Sunday worship, and he is glad to preach across the state. Our chaplains are also a great resource for pulpit supply, as Sunday worship at most of our communities takes place in the late afternoon. Many church groups enjoy visiting our campuses for an in-depth tour and a complementary lunch. We are also glad to supply meeting space for our churches and the five South Carolina Presbyteries when the need arises. Of course, as a ministry that was originally founded to serve Presbyterian older adults, this remains the central way we stand ready to support our churches: by providing an environment that promotes the social, physical and spiritual well-being of their members who live with us. Not only does this benefit these senior church members, it benefits those who care about them by giving peace of mind. So how can PCSC help your church and its members? We are eager to hear from you!

Mother’s Day Offering Update

L

ast year, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina touched the lives of 47 residents who could no longer afford to live with us. As with every year, the Mother’s Day Offering was a significant resource supporting our ability to provide shelter and nurture for these individuals, as well as give peace of mind to their families. We are glad to share that through the 2017 Mother’s Day Offering, generous churches and donors are once again giving strength to our commitment to care for those who outlive their life savings through no fault of their own. As the chart below indicates, the results of the 2017 Mother’s Day Offering to-date are comparable to 2016, particularly after considering that Mother’s Day fell a week earlier in 2016. While individual gifts made directly to PCSC are lower so far this year, gifts received from churches have increased. The amount collected for 2017 will continue to increase through the upcoming weeks. We ask churches to remit their collection of the Mother’s Day Offering if they’ve not already done so. Likewise, we ask individuals who missed the Offering to consider making a gift today. You can use the enclosed envelope and may simply write “Mother’s Day” on it if you would like us to count it toward this important campaign. Many thanks to all the faithful churches and individuals who take up the banner of the Mother’s Day Offering each year. Have you considered…? The stock market has been on a tear, with the Russell 2000 Index up a whopping 17 percent for the last 12 months as I write this in mid-July. Many investors have significant capital gains in their portfolios, and using appreciated securities to make a charitable gift is a smart way to manage these gains. Because these gifts avoid capital gains taxes, it costs donors less to make the same size gift compared to cash. If you’re interested in making a gift of securities, please call the Foundation office at (803) 7725885 (toll-free 1-800-842-4855) and we will give you or your broker the information needed to complete the gift.

Bill Pace shoots some hoops during the Aging Out Loud field day event.

The next Out Loud endeavor required residents to venture outside. One is never too old to Go Outside and play, and that is just what they did. A field day was held, complete with games such as cornhole, basketball and ring toss, as well as lemonade and cookies! The day ended with some friendly competition and lots of laughs. Speaking of laughs, who doesn’t like to Laugh Out Loud every once in a while? To kick start everyone’s giggle boxes, Chaplain Debbie Johnson led a workshop on The Benefits of Humor showing that, in addition to the cheering effects of a sincere chuckle, laughing can also improve health – it burns calories, releases endorphins and boosts the immune system! As humorist and motivational speaker Michael Pritchard once said, “We don’t stop laughing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop laughing.” In an effort to keep each other laughing, residents submitted their favorite jokes and funny stories so that they could be read aloud and shared with everyone. After each joke, a mixture of thunderous applause and belly-laughs resonated throughout the room. Most people would agree that laughter really is the best medicine. The final Out Loud event included the wonderful gifts of music and song. The four- and five-year olds from 4

the Big Blue Marble Daycare Center came to Sing Out Loud the songs they learned in school this past year. Once they finished singing through the ABC’s, months of the year, and counted all of the “monkeys swinging in the trees,” they greeted their audience with warm hugs and handmade, colored cards to thank each resident for listening. Later that same day, the residents had another opportunity to sing out loud when Lucille Harper, daughter of resident Frances McSween, came by to tickle the ivories in Frampton Parlor and lead a sing-along. Singing, like laughing, also has many health benefits. Along with the Virginia Sides and child from Big Blue Marble joyful tunes Day Care Center after “Singing Out Loud.” came a time to remember happy memories and reminisce about the good ole days. Everyone left the parlor with a smile on their face. The Age Out Loud theme opened doors and encouraged residents to try new things within the walls of the community and around the town of Clinton itself. Celebrating Older Americans Month is a great way to remember the importance of striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and paying attention to what today’s older adults have to say. It is also important to remember that this celebration should not be confined to one month out of the year. We should all strive to Live Out Loud every single day! Aging Out Loud was written by Hannah Taylor, Life Enrichment Assistant at The Clinton Presbyterian Community.

Old and Young Together:

Foothills Community Mentors College Interns

T

he Foothills Retirement Community in Easley has been coordinating a college summer internship program in partnership with Foothills Presbytery and local Presbyterian Churches. Through this ministry, staff and residents have engaged with interns in a mutually beneficial relationship of giving and receiving. The program is designed to mentor student interns from Upstate colleges as they seek to discern possible options for God’s vocation and call in their lives. This is the second year of the program, and it is being led by Foothills Chaplain Joseph Gaston, who helped initiate it last year while serving at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville. Called “Listening for the Sacred Voice of Vocation and Call,” the program is designed to give the interns an opportunity to gain professional experience. Through that experience and shared reflection with program facilitators, mentors and one another, the students have an opportunity to explore their gifts and how God may be leading them to use those gifts. The Forum for Theological Exploration provided a seed grant for this ministry of vocation and call for young adults. The racially diverse group was made up of seven students. Each was assigned an “Eli Elder,” a Foothills Community resident or staff member who volunteered to

spend time mentoring the interns through prayer and conversation. This ministry of discernment allows residents to share their wisdom and life experience with a young person and enjoy the satisfaction of making a real contribution to the intern’s life. The name “Eli Elder” is meant to recall the Israelite priest Eli, who mentored his successor, the prophet Samuel, beginning in Samuel’s childhood (1 Samuel 1-4). Three of the interns were assigned to work at the Foothills Community this summer, where Michael Adcock has been working as Chaplain Intern. Resident Jean Wallis noted that, “He was very knowledgeable with Bible Study.” Prior to Michael’s first time leading Vespers, Randy Kowalski, former Presbyterian minister and now resident shared, “I have been praying for him because I remember how scared I was when I preached for the first time!” McKiver Smith’s work as Activities Intern has focused on a photo gallery that depicts the life and mission of the Foothills Community. “Everybody has enjoyed his photographs used in the Chapel services and newsletter,” said resident Dorcas Lindsay. Ben Matthews has worked as Music Intern both at the community and at First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. As part of his

work, Ben led weekly sing-alongs that were greatly enjoyed by the residents. One even concluded with a spontaneous, joyful expansion as two residents took up the piano afterwards and additional residents joined in the singing. Joseph has served as mentor for all three, with residents Frank and Laura Sutherland serving as assistant mentors. Foothills residents serving as Eli Elders to all of the interns include Ann and Jim Black, Julie Brice, Jane Hart, Bob Hazen, and Cathy Redd. Staff members serving as Eli Elders are Marcy Dickson and Birdie Smith. The experience of the Foothills Community and the interns this summer recalls Psalm 148:12-13: Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. 7

Donor Testimonials…

Why and How They Give

By design, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina relies on generous donors, welcoming them to share in its mission to enrich the lives of older adults. It is particularly special for PCSC, then, when its supporters are willing to share how and why they give to its ministry. As these stories reveal, there are different ways of giving, but there is a way to give that suits each one’s circumstances.

“My Turn” Why He Gives

As a resident of the Foothills Retirement Community in Easley, Curtis Davis is not just a donor, he is a grateful resident. Curtis and his late wife, Ellen, have been generous donors in the past. When asked about his current motivation to give, he expressed his deep appreciation for the Foothills Community. “I really enjoy living here,” he shared, “and there is no way I’d live anywhere else.” Not long after he moved in, he said, he realized that the generosity of those who preceded him had helped found PCSC and the Foothills Community. “The ones who came before, the one who had big dreams, made this place possible,” he said.

How He Has Given

This year, Mr. Davis made a special gift from an IRA using a “qualified charitable distribution” (QCD). IRA owners are required to begin taking withdrawals from their IRA after age 70 ½. Of course, this also means paying taxes on the withdrawal. “I didn’t need the funds, however, for living expenses,” he shared. So instead of taking a withdrawal and paying taxes on it, he contacted the institution holding the IRA and arranged instead for a QCD to come to PCSC Foundation. QCD’s can offset required withdrawals dollar for dollar, and the owner may contribute up to $100,000 per year in this manner, even if this exceeds the minimum required withdrawal. Reflecting on his desire to make this gift from an IRA, he said, “Someone did this for me … now I want to do it for someone else. It’s my turn to ‘pass it on.’”

PCSC is grateful to these and so many other generous donors who keep our ministry healthy and vital. If you are interested in learning more about these or other ways of making a gift to PCSC that suits you and your circumstances, please contact Franklin Fant in the Foundation office at (803) 772-5885 (toll-free 1-800-842-4855) or email him at Franklin.Fant@PresComm.org. 8

“Faithful Giver” Why She Gives

For many years, Gertrude Hall has believed in what PCSC does. She has seen her brother, the late Morgan Coker, as well as many of her fellow church members, enjoy living at PCSC’s communities. “It is a needed mission,” she said, referring to PCSC’s ministry to seniors.

How She Has Given

“Free to Give” Why She Gives

Maymie Lou Spearman has lived at the Florence Presbyterian Community for more than 11 years. When she first arrived, it was under challenging circumstances. “My husband, Allan, had Alzheimer’s, and I could no longer care for him at home, as well as take care of the house,” she said. “Living in a cottage here, I was better able to look after him, until his health declined further and he needed to move to the healthcare center.” She feels that she has continued to benefit from living at the Community since his passing. “I firmly believe that I am far more independent now than I would be if I were still living in our house.” “The Florence Community really is my home now,” she added, “and that sense of home extends beyond my cottage to the public areas, as well.”

The Planned Gift – An Intentional Legacy of Caring

S

ome charitable gifts to Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina are made out of joyful and generous spontaneity. Others are made only after a period of careful thought, prayer and planning.

Dr. Stacey Brennan, Board of Trustees Chair, presents a plaque of recognition to President and CEO Kathy Ligon.

30 Years of Service Long tenures of employment with one organization are particularly rare these days. It is noteworthy, then, that PCSC President and CEO Kathy Ligon reached her 30th anniversary of employment with PCSC this year. Kathy’s service was recognized at the May meeting of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Stacey Brennan, Board Chair, presented her with a plaque and praised her service to the ministry. “Take a walk with Kathy through the halls of any of our communities and you will see her mobbed by our residents, chatting and smiling, while recalling nearly each person’s name! We at PCSC are truly privileged to have a conscientious, learned and caring Chief Executive.” She also noted Kathy’s focus, energy and optimism. Dr. Brennan added, “Kathy, thank you for all you do, have done, and will do. Most of all, thank you for keeping our mission active before our eyes: to be ‘a compassionate Christian ministry dedicated to enriching the quality of life for seniors of all faiths.’” 10

Among the gifts in this second category are those that come to PCSC after the donor’s death: gifts made through one’s will, a trust, an IRA, a life insurance policy or other means. These kinds of gifts, by which one leaves an intentional legacy of caring, are commonly referred to as planned gifts, because they typically involve some degree of extra “planning ahead.” Some planned gifts are relatively easy to make. For instance, it is fairly simple to make PCSC Foundation the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or an IRA. All that is needed is to fill out a form provided by the insurance company or financial institution. Others planned gifts may require the services of an attorney. PCSC values every gift received, but planned gifts are particularly meaningful simply because in aggregate they represent the lion’s share of the donations received in any given year. Would you consider being one of those who leave an intentional legacy of caring for seniors? If you would like more information, please contact Franklin Fant, Director of Foundation Services and Church Relations, at (803) 772-5885 (toll-free 1-800-842-4855) or email him at Franklin.Fant@PresComm.org. Memory Caregiver Support Group at Columbia

B

eing a caregiver for someone with dementia is a difficult task that is both physically and emotionally draining. To make things more challenging, caregivers are often unprepared and untrained for the task when they take it on. Key resources they need to be better equipped include helpful information and a place to share their experiences with others and be encouraged. The Columbia Presbyterian Community now sponsors a monthly memory support group for caregivers. Meredith Memory Scott, Supervisor of the Jasmine Place memory Support support center at the community, leads the group. “The group is not just for memory support, but for caregivers of seniors in general who need a safe, secure place to share what they are going through, as well as learn how to cope and make things better,” she says. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that there are more than 300,000 caregivers for Alzheimer’s patients alone in South Carolina. This statistic shows how urgent the need is across the state for support groups like the one offered at the Columbia Community.

Group

When? The third Thursday of every month at 6 pm. Where? The Columbia Presbyterian Community, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, SC 29073 Who is welcome? Anyone who is a caregiver or family member of someone facing dementiarelated illness.

“Any caregiver or family member who would like to attend is welcome,” explained Meredith. “Some For more info… group members are actively caring for a spouse Call Meredith Scott at (803) 667-5714. or parent. Others have a loved one experiencing the early stages of dementia and they are readying themselves for the future,” when memory issues will have worsened. Some meetings are organized around providing education, some include a presentation by an outside speaker, but according to Meredith, the aspect most valued by caregivers is the opportunity to decompress. It is a great blessing for group members to share with others who are going through the same challenges they are.

What is most challenging? “Breaking down the stigma associated with dementia-related illness and helping people understand when it’s time to take active steps to provide appropriate care for loved ones,” she said. An excited groups of Foothills residents on the way to watch the Atlanta Braves take on the Chicago Cubs.

She does find her work very rewarding. “I especially enjoy knowing we are making a difference in people’s lives. We cannot change the fact that someone has a disease, but we can improve how the situation is addressed and experienced. Life does not end with dementia.” 29

Clinton Wandering in Washington One of the South’s best kept secrets, Washington, Georgia, has more antebellum homes per capita than any other city in the United States. Thanks to Clinton residents Jo and Buzzy Randall, it’s no longer a secret to The Clinton Presbyterian Community! Buzzy and Jo grew up in Washington and spent a lifetime investing themselves in the town they love so dearly. On a recent trip by Clinton residents to Washington, which the Randalls helped instigate, they were eager to share their story and their “stomping grounds” with other residents. The activity bus turned into a tour bus the moment they entered the town. Buzzy claimed “shotgun” to give driving directions and Jo took the microphone to tell stories introducing the visitors to Washington’s rich history. At two churches, residents were greeted by friends of the Randall’s and treated to tours. The First Presbyterian Church of Washington dates prior to 1790 and its sanctuary, built in 1825, is the oldest non-residential building in Washington. The Episcopal Church was built a few years later and is adorned with intricate stained glass windows that were crafted by the famed Wilbur H. Burnham Studios and

feature unique royal blue hues, which are considered to be a Burnham trademark. After lunch at Southern Scratch and some shopping, the bus headed out for the final leg of the tour that included various architectural styles from grand Greek Revivals to dainty Victorians. Clinton residents were welcomed inside the historic Wagner House by the owners, who walked them through each room of the gorgeous antebellum home, sharing stories of the house’s interesting past.

Residents’ Choice Award for Beautiful Yard Residents of the Clinton Community turned afternoon outings into life-enriching experiences for the entire town this summer through The Residents’ Choice Award for Beautiful Yard. Each week residents nominated a new yard that they felt deserved recognition for its landscaping. New residents were able to explore and enjoy the sights of Clinton, while others were able to enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

Left to right: Winners Mica and Joe Nixon, Emma and Ollie Suber, and Tiffany, Matt, and Ellie Davis

The community never expected such a warm reception from the town and the excitement that this activity would bring. For weeks, the town buzzed with anticipation to see which new yard would display the Presbyterian Community’s signs proclaiming that week’s “Beautiful Yard.”

The weekly bus rides provided participating residents an opportunity to feel involved in their community, be included in making decisions, engage in meaningful social interactions with friends, and, of course, bring joy to the local winners! The Clinton Presbyterian Community is grateful for the chance to give back to the town it loves.

Columbia Resident's Legacy helps Columbia Community “Swing into Spring” Columbia resident Frank Dieringer (left) was well-known for his fun-loving attitude and his enjoyment of parties and other social events. It is not surprising, then, that when he remembered PCSC in his estate, he instructed that some of his gift be used for “activities or events that would bring joy to residents.”

Above: The Capital City Big Band in action. Below: The Columbia Community dining room was lavishly decorated for the Spring Swing event.

Frank’s intentions were carried out in early April when his gift was used to help fund an elegant “Spring Swing” dinner and dance event at the Columbia Community. Special heavy hors d’oeurves and beverages were served, which residents and their guests enjoyed with special china, glassware and tableware. The Capital City Big Band, an approximately 20-piece ensemble, provided outstanding music that everyone enjoyed dancing and listening to. Frank’s daughter, Cindy Dieringer, was in attendance and Frank was recognized and remembered during the event, both for his convivial character and his generosity. The Columbia Community looks forward to additional events graciously provided by Frank’s legacy.

Celebrating those who Live & Work in a Skilled Nursing Setting This spring, The Columbia Presbyterian Community celebrated National Nursing Home Week with five days of special events for those living and working in its Cassels Healthcare Center. The 2017 theme of this national event was “The Spirit of America,” to celebrate our beautiful country and the diversity of people within it. The events of the week included outreach to the Babcock Center, visits by Mary Kay representatives, a horseshoe competition, live performances of mountain music and Gospel music, an ice cream truck, and other funfilled activities. The week culminated with a community picnic, as well as a display of vintage cars by the Chevy Car Club, blue grass music, a wheel-chair parade, and a dunk tank. Columbia Executive Director Jason Basile even took his turn in the tank! PCSC is grateful to the many volunteers who contributed to this special week and recognizes the involvement of many staff members across a number of departments, who helped make this celebration a success. 32

The Columbia Community recognized Wellness Week in late June with a competition between residents to see who could engage in the most wellness activities. Residents kept a log of any Community-sponsored activities they attended in any dimension of wellness to earn points. There were a number of activities offered, including Zumba, a hula hoop class, and a Nu-Step relay that was also a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. At the end of the week, the residents with the most cumulative points were recognized with a prize and the prestigious title of Mr. and Mrs. Wellness. Congratulations to Lily Bradley and Sally Gandy, who tied in first place for women, and Ron Jacobs, who was crowned Mr. Wellness!

Craft Fair Supports Employee Emergency Fund

Residents at The Village recently pulled their talents together for a great cause. At the Spring Craft Fair you could find handpainted ceramics, various knitted items, artwork, jewelry, and quilts by the late Muriel McLean, who lived at The Village. Proceeds raised were generously donated to The Village’s Employee Emergency Fund, which is used to assist employees facing a financial crisis that is beyond their means. Many thanks to the residents who made a purchase to support a great cause! 34

In Memory’s Kitchen Several months ago Village resident Werner Will asked Steve Scranton, Dining Services Director at The Village, about doing a special presentation with him about a book, In Memory’s Kitchen.

The book is a collection of recipes that were written by women in Terezin Concentration Camp. The recipes for special dishes were written down, not so that they could be prepared at the camp, but that they might be saved and handed down to their grandchildren. Miraculously, the recipes survived and made their way to the daughter of one of the prisoners.

Above: Werner Will. Below: Steve Scranton prepares recipes from the book.

Steve chose some of the recipes and prepared them as part of his monthly cooking demonstration. Ironically, this happened to fall during Holocaust Awareness Week. Mr. Will presented the history of the book and concentration camps while the recipes were prepared. There was an English translation for each recipe but they were written in decagrams and other terms that had to be converted and interpreted. The items made were Murber Strudel, Kartoffel Salat, Zwiebel Kuchen and Erdapfel Dalken, which the residents enjoyed sampling.

In April, The Village at Summerville had the privilege of hosting the wedding of Olivia Pritchard and Jim Sharpton. Olivia’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claudius Pritchard, have been residents of The Village since June of 2011, while Jim’s mother, Mrs. Janice Sharpton, officially became a resident in June of 2017. The ceremony was performed by The Village’s Chaplain, The Rev. Achim Daffin, and the reception was catered by the dining services team.
