resbyterian Communities of South Carolina is excited to announce that Mrs. Carolyn PNorment “Bet” Phillips has left a gift of over $1.3 million in her will for the benefit of The Florence Presbyterian Community.

CEO Kathy Ligon stated, “Mrs. Phillips’ gift will bring significant enhancement to the Florence campus. We are looking forward to exploring ways this generous gift can best be put to work to maximize its impact on the community. I cannot say how grateful we are to Mrs. Phillips for the legacy of caring that she has left behind. Her generosity will benefit so many residents of the Florence Community for years to come.” Mrs. Phillips was a former resident of the Florence Community and a member of the Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Thank You to the Difference Makers

W

hen you visit a Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina campus, you will quickly notice a number of things: an attractive and comfortable campus, a warm and caring staff, friendly and engaging residents. You will also notice a broad range of activities and programs to support the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of our residents. But these things did not just spring forth out of thin air. So much of what you see at a Presbyterian community is the direct result of generous donors.

Imagine the difference if these donors had never expressed their care for older adults. All of the chapels would immediately vanish. You see, all of these were built with donated funds.

On average, each campus would have 6-7 fewer residents. Why? There would be little or no financial assistance for residents who can no longer afford the full cost of their care. These seniors would have to find somewhere else to live.

So Many Gifts … All Given From the Heart

H

ighlighting gifts in this issue of Community Connections reminds me of the residents who make special contributions to this ministry and the relationships they develop and sustain. It is such a privilege to learn about the motivation for the gift and the donor’s life story, as well as see the joy experienced by both giver and receiver. The Village at Summerville has the opportunity to provide “enhanced dining experiences” at special dinners because of a former resident’s generosity. Mr. Joseph Troxell so enjoyed going out to a restaurant for a special meal. He wanted those who live at The Village to occasionally experience an extra special meal for themselves, without having to leave the community. His generosity will be remembered once again as residents at The Village will soon enjoy a dinner of steak and lobster, accompanied by a harpist! In addition, the other part of his gift is used to provide funds for charitable care for residents at The Village. In August, the Board of Trustees met and approved the construction of a new Memory Support Center at The Village. Afterwards, a resident attending the meeting as a representative of his community announced he would be giving funds to help with the construction of this new building. These are awesome experiences to witness!

I am also reminded of the many gifts of time and talents given by residents in our communities to their fellow residents. These include reading to those whose eyesight no longer allows them to enjoy getting lost in a good book, growing and arranging flowers for dining room tables, providing hours of enjoyment for others by sharing musical talents, serving on Resident Councils and various community committees, participating in the PCSC Olympics, and taking time with a fellow resident who is either having a bad day or has a joy to celebrate. Sometimes it is simply “speaking with a smile” to those they pass. These are just some of the blessings residents give to other residents and we don’t want to take them for granted. All these gifts – large or small monetary gifts and those of time and talents – are given from the heart out of thanksgiving and joy. Shared by those who live there, these gifts help create the community spirit evident at PCSC communities. Every gift is unique, every gift is appreciated and every gift makes this ministry stronger to benefit those who are served! Kathy Ligon, President and CEO

Foundation Report

Wonderful Affirmations of PCSC’s Ministry

F

rom my vantage point as the Director of Foundation Services and Church Relations, I am grateful to receive a variety of affirmations of PCSC’s ministry. When visiting our communities, I inevitably find residents who voluntarily share, with no prompting, how much they enjoy living with us. Often our Foundation Services Office receives donations accompanied by notes of gratitude from residents’ families. These notes describe the enjoyment and care older family members have found at a PCSC community. These affirmations mean so much, because they confirm that PCSC is truly accomplishing its mission to enrich the quality of life for our residents. Another special affirmation I have the privilege of witnessing comes in form of a letter or phone call informing me that someone has named PCSC in his or her will. Including PCSC in one’s estate plans is an emphatic statement about one’s love for older adults, as well as a lasting testimony to the work PCSC does to express this love.

The Impact of Planned Gifts on PCSC’s Ministry Just how significant are planned gifts to PCSC? Consider that in 2018, gifts from wills, trusts, and charitable gift annuities totaled almost $1.2 million dollars. Through July of this year, planned gifts received have totaled $1.5 million. The individual gifts that make up these figures vary greatly in size. Some are for several hundred dollars. Others are gifts of six and even seven figures. But regardless of size, each and every gift is an affirmation of PCSC’s ministry to older adults. Each gift reflects someone’s thoughtful and generous intention to make a final statement of caring for those PCSC serves. You can see why PCSC encourages those who affirm its mission to make a gift to PCSC in their estate plans. Naming PCSC in one’s will is the most common way that this affirmation is expressed. Such gifts cost nothing in one’s lifetime and

they allow one to change one’s mind at a Franklin Fant, Director later date. of Foundation Services These are and Church Relations also typically the most impactful gift a donor will make, because they come at a time when the donor has no further need for the gift and can be most generous. If you have affirmed PCSC’s ministry to older adults by including PCSC in your will or other planned gift, please let us know. We want to thank you and make sure we understand how you want your gift put into service. In other words, if you have affirmed PCSC with a planned gift, please let us affirm your charitable wishes!

PCSC News Difference Makers Continued from page 1 by a treasured musical entertainer would no longer happen. These things would not exist at Presbyterian Communities because no one ever made gifts to fund them. Actually, this is too rosy of a picture. Presbyterian Communities itself would not exist without the commitment and support of the Presbyterian churches and their members who worked and gave to make this ministry a reality. It’s all a little reminiscent of George Bailey in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life, isn’t it? In the movie, George makes a rash wish that he had never been born. An angel then helps him to see just how important his life had been by showing him all things that would not have been, except for George’s presence and influence. It is with great gratitude, then, that this edition of Community Connections is dedicated to PCSC’s donors. Thank you to all who have who have supported PCSC’s communities with a gift. You have truly made a difference! 4

Changing of the Guard in the CFO’s Office

P

resbyterian Communities of South Carolina has been blessed for many years by the steady and careful leadership of its Chief Financial Officer, Ashley Taylor. Ashley joined PCSC in 2005, bringing a wealth of experience from his former work in the senior living field with Lutheran Homes of South Carolina and in the healthcare industry with Lexington Medical Center. During Ashley’s tenure, PCSC saw considerable improvement of its financial position. Reflecting on his contributions, President and CEO Kathy Ligon said, “Ashley’s expertise in strategic planning has been critical in guiding PCSC Retiring CFO Ashley Taylor (second from the left) was honored at the Board of Trustee’s May meeting for his years of service. He in manageable growth is pictured with Board Chair Stacey Brennan (left), President and financial security. It and CEO Kathy Ligon, and Board Vice-Chair Jay Nexsen. has been a privilege to serve with Ashley, and his leadership will be missed.” In addition to his financial skills and knowledge, Ashley’s good humor and easy-going nature made him a pleasure to work with. While Ashley will be missed, PCSC is also excited to announce that its long-time Controller, Chad Melven, will serve as its new CFO. Chad has over 21 years of employment with PCSC, which means he has an extraordinary understanding of its history, its workings and its environment. His history with PCSC goes back even further, as Chad was formerly employed by the firm that served as PCSC’s auditor and public accountant. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and is a Certified Public Accountant. “We have had a long-term succession plan that has included Chad transitioning to the CFO position,” shared Kathy, “and we are thrilled to have him accept this new role. I have experienced Chad’s integrity, capability and dedication, and I know PCSC will be blessed by his service.” Reflecting on his past and future with PCSC, Chad said, Chad Melven “It has been a true privilege to serve the residents of our communities on a team of really outstanding people through the years, and I’ve been very fortunate to have had such a great mentor in Ashley Taylor. I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to grow and serve in this new role.”

PCSC Launches New Physical Therapy/Rehab Service …

F

or several years, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina has been offering Medicare-reimbursed physical therapy services at its campuses. These have been available both to short-term healthcare residents receiving rehab services, as well as to permanent residents. Historically, PCSC has contracted with an outside provider to deliver these services on campus. PCSC is now excited to be entering a new era with the creation of its own in-house physical therapy and rehabilitation service. This initiative emerged as a result of changes to the reimbursement business plan set forth by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services. “This governmental mandate has forced providers like PCSC to stepback and re-evaluate existing therapy programs and service structures,” shared Chief Operating Office Tony Fountain. “After much evaluation, we determined that the best practice, at this time, is to move away from contracting with another entity for physical therapy services, and instead, to provide these services directly in-house.”

… and welcomes a new Divisional Director of Rehabilitation Services Related to the launch of its new physical therapy and rehabilitation services on October 1, PCSC is also excited to welcome Matt Schorner as the new Divisional Director of Rehabilitation Services. Matt has served in various therapy/rehabilitation programs during his 10-plus years of service to the field. From a front line Physical Therapist to various corporate positions, he has made his mark as an innovator, strategist, and contributor to program-changing ideas. “Matt has great strategic planning abilities and a strong commitment to serving others through quality services and a high expectation of excellence,” said Tony. “We are looking forward to celebrating the achievements of our new in-house rehabilitation/ therapy program under his leadership.”

Matt Schorner, PCSC’s new Divisional Director of Rehabilitation Services.

Earlier in his career, Matt served in the US Army as a Physical Therapy Specialist, working at the Brooke, Walter Reed, and Womack Army Medical Centers. He holds a BS in Exercise Physiology from East Carolina University and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Neumann University. “I am honored and blessed to be welcomed into these wonderful communities,” said Matt. “I look forward to the opportunity to make a positive impact on patient-centered care by bringing fresh perspectives and innovative therapy practices to each therapy professional. Like Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, my goal is be on the cutting-edge of industry advancements.” 5

Village Couple Finds that Blessing and Being a Blessing Go Hand-in-Hand

R

ay and Emma Doughty moved into The Village at Summerville in late 2009 when they were in their early 70s and still in great health. “It was the lawn mowing that got me,” chuckled Ray. “I got aggravated with my mower and told Emma it was time to start planning our move to Presbyterian Communities.” Why Presbyterian Communities? Emma had already made up her mind that that is where they were going to go. She had actually worked in the Management Services Office in Columbia years earlier for PCSC’s then-President Ron Crossley. During that time, she visited and became well-acquainted with every PCSC community in the state. Later, she provided leadership to PCSC by serving on its Board of Trustees. “There is so much to enjoy here,” says Emma. “Folks should come as young as they can. There are interesting people to meet and get to know, and there are many different and interesting things to do.” People and activities at The Village are where the Doughty’s have found their enjoyment intersecting with opportunities to bless others. Ray and Emma have a wide range of interests that they can pursue, and at the same time they end up giving back to others. Both Ray and Emma are accomplished musicians. He plays the clarinet and piano, she plays the piano and organ, and they find many opportunities to put their musical gifts to use at The Village. On Tuesday mornings, you will find them with a group of other residents who serve as the choir during Chaplain Achim 6

Daffin’s devotions in the Health and Rehabilitation Center. On Thursdays, they lead sing-a-longs, again in the Health and Rehabilitation Center, with a variety of types of music selected to appeal to those living there. They also occasionally play for worship services in the Lola E. Johnston Memorial Chapel. Besides being able to help lead worship when needed, “I am glad to be able to take advantage of having an organ on campus to play,” Emma adds. Ray and Emma give recitals twice a year at The Village, and are typically joined by their two daughters, Donna Doughty and Ruthie Holloman. They calculate that they have performed more than 200 different works for these events, which are always highly anticipated and well-attended. The programs offer a wide variety of musical genres, including religious, classical, folk, show tunes, and more. Ray personally writes many of the arrangements they use. It is no wonder that Ray and Emma are often introduced at The Village as “the musicians.” Ray’s relationship with music is a professional one. He is a retired music educator who began his career as a high school band teacher and later moved into supervisory roles in education. He worked in curriculum development as the Music Education Consultant for the SC Department of Education and finished his career at Winthrop University, where he developed the Arts in Basic Education Curriculum Project. During this time, he also managed to put in 30 years as a Naval Reservist.

Laurel Crest Welcomes New Chaplain

In recognition of his service in the field of education, Ray was recently designated a Lowell Mason Fellow by the National Association for Music Education. Ray received this award, named for the father of public school music education in the United States, in recognition of his own lifetime contributions to the field of music education. Ray and Emma’s interests and gifts also extend beyond music. They lead two, 10-week Bible studies for residents each year, offered on Monday mornings in the spring and fall. These involve a good deal of in-depth study and preparation, but they feel like they receive as much as they give. “The level of understanding among the participants is amazing,” they say. They also enjoy taking advantage of group painting opportunities available at The Village on Wednesdays. Adding up all the days of the week mentioned above, one can see that Ray and Emma stay pretty busy and contribute a tremendous amount to life at The Village. Emma pushes back on this a bit, saying, “We don’t think of it as ‘giving’ so much as simply taking advantage of the opportunity to do the things we enjoy. We enjoy doing things that build community, and living at The Village gives us that opportunity.”

n late July, Laurel Crest Retirement Community welcomed the Rev. Mike Sears as its new Chaplain. Mike is a bi-vocational minister who also serves as the Pastor of New Kirk Presbyterian Church in Blythewood. He will split his time between serving Laurel Crest and the New Kirk Church. This is a great opportunity for Laurel Crest residents, as well as the staff. PCSC chaplains lead worship services, Bible studies and devotionals for residents. They make hospital visits and provide pastoral care. They are also available for staff in need of support and spiritual encouragement.

The Rev. Mike Sears is the new Chaplain at the Laurel Crest Retirement Community.

Prior to coming to the New Kirk Church, Mike served as Pastor of Olney Presbyterian Church in Gastonia and as Associate Pastor at Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese, NC. Mike has also served as a chaplain for Hospice of Laurens County in Clinton. He is a graduate of NC State and holds an M.Div. from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte. “I am excited to be the Chaplain at Laurel Crest and look forward to growing together with the residents and staff in all the work God is doing here,” shared Mike.

Clinton Community Celebrates Nursing Assistant Graduates by Hannah Taylor Left: Graduates of the CNA program celebrate their milestone. Below: Clinton resident Louis Stephens and staff nurse Nancy celebrate the graduation of his granddaughter, Adaline, from the CNA program.

For more than ten years, The Clinton Presbyterian Community and Clinton High School have partnered to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program to the school’s students. Students are dually enrolled with Piedmont Tech, so that they receive both high school and college course credits. The students come to the Clinton Community in their senior year for the clinical component of the training. During the student experience, skills obtained include vital signs assessment, delivery of personal care (toileting, dressing, bathing, hair and nail care, etc.), changing linen, room organization, and specialized activities. Students are able to give individualized attention and care to the residents in a one-on-one setting. At the end of the course, each student is encouraged to take the CNA certification exam. Graduation for the latest group of students was held in June in the Clinton Community Healthcare 8

dining room. The excitement was undeniable as a wave of red caps and gowns entered the dining room and the graduates took their seats for an unforgettable celebration. Clinton residents and staff also came together to create a graduation celebration of their own, honoring and thanking these graduates for their hard work, commitment and achievement. Holding the clinical training at the Clinton Community provides valuable experience for the students, assistance for the staff, and more hands-on help for the residents. Some of the program’s graduates even end up working at the Clinton Community. Presently, one of the community’s Registered Nurses is a graduate of this program, as are two of the CNAs. When asked about the impact of the class, a student responded, “At Presbyterian Communities, the staff was very helpful and took time out of their busy day to make sure we knew the correct and

efficient way to do things. The most important thing I learned was to be compassionate because sometimes the staff members are the only family a resident has.” Another student stated, “The PCSC staff was always welcoming and excited to show us the ropes. Going through this program helped us learn many social skills and people skills that we will all be able to use in the real world. This class has shown me that the things I do for residents anywhere will always make a difference.” Making a difference in the lives of residents is what the Clinton Community does best. Caps off to a win-win program and to the latest round of nursing assistant graduates!

A Gift That Benefits Everyone (including You!) • • •

Do you have an interest in supporting the well-being older adults? Could you use more income now that you’ve retired? Are you concerned about the uncertainties of the stock market and the low interest rate environment? • Do you want to reduce capital gains liability and secure an income tax deduction? • Does a friend or relative need the security of an annuity to help meet unexpected expenses?

You can address these goals and others by making a gift to Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina using a Charitable Gift Annuity, or CGA. A CGA is partnership between you and a charitable organization that delivers significant support to PCSC while at the same time helping you reach your own financial and estate planning goals.

How a gift annuity works:

In return for your contribution, you receive a promise to pay you a fixed annuity for life. You can add a spouse or other loved one as co-beneficiary. Or you can have the payments made to someone else. The payments are based a percentage of your gift, determined by one’s age. At the moment, an 80 year-old can expect to receive over 7% per year. A 90 year-old can expect over 9%. That is far more than a bank CD currently pays! For example, if your annuity rate on a $20,000 gift is 8%, you will receive $1,600 every year for the rest of your life. When the annuity terminates, the remaining balance comes to PCSC for the purpose you designated when you made your gift.

Other benefits:

You’ll also receive a charitable deduction. Only part of each annuity payment will be taxed as ordinary income over your life expectancy. Further, if you use

appreciated securities to set up your CGA, you’ll pay no upfront capital gains tax. The final benefit is that your gift will be used to enhance the well-being of the older adults served by PCSC. You will leave a legacy that ensures the continued strength and vitality of this ministry.

Ready to learn more about a charitable gift annuity? We’ll be happy to send you more information. Even better, we can demonstrate how it can benefit you using a computer-based gift calculator. The 2nd Sixty Planned Giving Initiative

Laurel Crest Resident Supports PCSC with Securities Donation

L

aurel Crest resident Dave Waugh used securities he no longer needed to make a special gift to Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina. The donation of these securities actually represented Dave’s support of two different retirement communities. “When I lived at a not-for-profit retirement community in Missouri a few years ago, the parent organization issued tax-free bonds. They were offered to the residents first, and I bought some. After moving to Laurel Crest a few years ago, I realized that I didn’t need them, but that they would make a good gift to PCSC.” Once Dave’s bonds were received by PCSC, they were sold and the proceeds were placed in the PCSC Foundation. Asked what impact he hopes his gift Laurel Crest resident Dave Waugh will have, he shared, “PCSC has a practice of providing financial assistance to residents who outlive their personal funds. I want my gift to be used to help someone who needs it.” Dave added that he had never made a gift like this, but that it “felt good” to do so. He said he was motivated to give because of his positive, first-hand experience with the blessings of senior living communities. “I am glad I have a place like Laurel Crest, and I am especially thankful for the caring staff that works so hard for the residents.”

Giving Appreciated Securities Makes Good Sense Donating appreciated securities can be one of the smartest ways to make a charitable gift. This is because it allows you to re-direct taxes you would have paid on capital gains from selling the stock. Suppose that you have shares of stock currently worth $10,000 that you purchased for $6,000. This means you have $4,000 in capital gains that will be taxed at 15%. If you are in the 24% tax bracket, the difference between selling the stock yourself and making a cash gift versus donating the shares to PCSC would look like this:

Selling Stock

Donating Stock

Value of shares Your capital gains tax ($4,000 gain x 15%)

$ 10,000 $ 10,000 $ (600) 0

Value of your gift / Net proceeds to PCSC

$ 9,400

$ 10,000

Your potential income tax savings from the charitable deduction (Value of gift x 24%)

$ 2,256

$ 2,400

Donating stocks or bonds is easy and straightforward. Simply call, or have your broker call, the Foundation Services Office at (803) 772-5885 and ask to speak to Franklin Fant or Cathy Jackson. They will give you the information needed to make a gift of securities. 10

Laurel Crest Residents and Staff Share Their Talents The “Talented (and NOT so Talented) Talent Show” is typically one of the biggest events at Laurel Crest Retirement Community, and this year’s show was no exception. The residents practice and rehearse for months leading up to the show. There were singers, dancers, story tellers, jokesters and more! One of the best things about this talent show is that there is no pressure to be perfect. The residents and staff show up to have a good time and share their “talents.” On the night of the show, the room was packed with families and friends … there wasn’t even room to stand! The show has become so popular that the Community recorded the show and had another viewing a week later. Once again, the room was packed! The Community is already looking forward to next year’s show, and folks have already started working on their “talents. Below: In June, Laurel Crest Retirement Community recognized some of its amazing staff members for their many years of service. Pictured below are just a few of the giving, talented and caring employees who received awards for their years of service. PCSC is deeply grateful for the contributions these staff members have made to uphold its mission.

Visit to Landsford Canal State Park What’s better than sunshine and fresh air? Sunshine, fresh air and rocky shoals spider lilies, of course! Clinton residents recently took advantage of some beautiful summer weather and set out for the Landsford Canal State Park in Lancaster, SC. This park hugs the last freeflowing stretch of the Catawba River. It is also home to the largest known strand of rocky shoal spider lilies, which are named for the shallow and rocky patches of river that they cling to. These beautiful flowers bloom by the thousands each year during the months of May and June.

Fly Me to the Moon On July 20, 1969, nearly 650 million people around the world held their breath as they watched the lunar module of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission touchdown on the surface of the moon. As Neil Armstrong took his first step on the lunar surface, he captured the magnitude of this moment with what is now considered to be one of the most famous quotes in history, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Fifty years later, the Clinton Community joined with the rest of the nation in celebrating this pivotal moment in human history. Residents spent a wonderful afternoon reminiscing over old newsreels, enjoying some “spacey snacks,” testing their knowledge with moon-themed trivia, and posing for glamour shots in an out-of-thisworld photo booth! 30

Lights! Camera! Action!: Volunteers Help Residents Create Documentary of Their Lives In 2016, Dana Risinger became a beloved volunteer at The Columbia Presbyterian Community, helping residents with genealogy research and introducing them to ancestry.com. She generously offers private sessions on her own time. She has interviewed over four dozen residents and staff and researched their ancestry. Each month, Dana hosts a Resident Spotlight to highlight one of those residents or staff members she has researched, presenting her findings to residents, their families and staff. Dana’s passion for genealogy is contagious at the community. She also sparked the idea for the In Their Own Words documentary, which preserves residents’ personal life stories for their families to enjoy. In Their Own Words aims to help preserve residents’ firsthand accounts of the times of their lives, many of which took place before so many advances in technology. The documentary began production in May of 2018 with volunteer videographers Wendell Patton and Rob Starkey (who also served as editor). Both volunteered their time, resources and equipment to make this production special for residents to share with their families. The idea behind the video was to invite residents to share a story of choice about their lives and anything else they wanted to pass on to families and friends. Residents submitted pictures to include in the film, and they spoke to further highlight what was important to them. Some brought memorabilia to show on film, recited creative works such as poetry they had written, or even played musical instruments. During the filming process, residents were given creative freedom to say what they would Columbia Community volunteer Dana like and what stories Risinger (pictured with her husband they wanted to share. Tommy) came up with the idea for the In Their Own Words documentary and served as the film’s interviewer. 32

Columbia resident Louise Cornwall (center), shown with her daughters and friends, shared her memories in the documentary. Left: The red carpet was rolled out in the Columbia chapel for the premiere.

With Dana as the interviewer, residents were prompted with questions to keep the story flowing. The crew made the experience positive with a “no pressure” atmosphere, giving the residents as many re-takes as they needed. Families also contributed photos and prompts to help residents recall their most meaningful experiences. All residents were invited to participate, and there were several from assisted living and skilled care, in addition to independent living. It was a joy and a privilege to work with these residents, including those from “the greatest generation,” who have lived through many historic events. The premiere of In Their Own Words took place on Saturday, May 18, when participants in the film were given the red carpet treatment. Guests included family, friends and residents. The movie premiered on the big screen, provoked both laughter and tears, and was enjoyed by all in attendance. Participants and their families had a blast at the after party that included fancy hors d’oeuvres made by Dining Services. It was truly a day to be remembered by all. The Columbia Community is grateful to Rob Starkey, Wendell Patton and Dana Risinger for this generous contribution to the community that will be cherished always.

Florence

Mission Campers Visit Florence This summer, children in grades 1 to 6 from the local ServeFLO Mission Camp visited The Florence Presbyterian Community. The mission camp is associated with several churches who work to unify the local community by meeting various needs with the love and service of Christ. These children serve in schools, pet shelters, mission agencies, churches and other organizations. The first day, the children brought wooden crosses that they and the residents decorated and which the residents kept as mementos. After craft time, the children joined residents in a game of Bingo. The second day, a different group of children visited and exercised with residents under the leadership of Florence Wellness Director Leslie Thompson. Afterwards, they shared some of their talents. Hugs, pictures and good conversation were a highlight of their visit.

ServeFLO Campers visited the community as part of their summer mission work.

The week was topped off with a game of kickball with some of the older children who are part of the ServeFLO Mission Camp. The children took turns leading the game with the residents and concluded their visit with more exercise. The Florence Community appreciates the ServeFLO Mission Camp kids for joining the residents for a wonderful time of love, service and friendship. Their assistance and interaction was enjoyed by all.

The “Pop-Up”: A Beautiful Way to Spend an Evening Almost everyone enjoys going out for fine dining every now and then. At the Florence Community, the “Pop-Up” Restaurant is a monthly event, put on by Dining Services, that allows residents to relive those times when people got dressed up to go out and enjoy 5-star food. The Pop-Up provides an intimate evening with low lights and music from the era that residents remember fondly. The prices are reasonable and there is no need to figure a tip, as PCSC has a strict no-tipping policy.

Florence resident Daphen Edge prepares to enjoy a delicious meal at the “Pop-Up.” Behind her, diners toast the evening.

34

Residents can book in advance and select from a menu exactly what they would like to eat: appetizer, entrée and dessert. They also have a choice of wines to accompany the meal, if they like. The menu changes every month, and residents are asked to give menu suggestions for the upcoming event when they finish their meal.

July’s Pop-Up menu featured a delicious Surf and Turf entrée.

Residents Enjoy Making Music A few times each month, The Florence Presbyterian Community enjoys visits with Robin Parker, a board certified music therapist. She is a 2006 graduate of Charleston Southern University and serves as President of the SC Music Therapy Association. She is passionate about helping others use music to achieve their non-musical goals. Her visits are a time of physical, social and emotional stimulation for those who participate through the hands on-experience and creation of music.

Florence residents enjoy the stimulation of a rhythm exercise using sticks. Clara Maxwell's patience pays off as she reels in a fish from the Florence Community pond.

Mrs. Hazel Allen is one of the amazing residents at The Foothills Retirement Community … basically, she is a rock star! In recognition of her lifetime contributions to her local community, Hazel was recently awarded The Order of the Silver Crescent by the Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster. Hazel devoted 30 years of her life to public education, teaching at Sue Cleveland Elementary (Piedmont), Hollis Elementary (Greenville) and Wren Middle School (Piedmont). She served as an officer of the Piedmont Book Club and Piedmont Mother’s Club. She also served as a volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels in Anderson County for more than 20 years. After retiring from public education, she devoted her time teaching Sunday school at First Baptist Church of Piedmont and visiting shut-ins to ease their loneliness. She has been a member of First Baptist since 1949. In addition to the Order of the Silver Crescent, Mrs. Allen was recognized by the Piedmont Mother’s Club as the Citizen of the Year in 2016, by the Piedmont Lions Club as Citizen of the Year in 2000, and she was the Teacher of the Year at Wren Middle School 1982-83.

Swanky Dining Outings

Resident Celebrates 90th Birthday by Hosting Dive Show

Once a month, Village residents hop on the bus with excitement to visit a new Lowcountry restaurant. Charleston is filled with delicious restaurants, varied dining experiences, and Village residents do not want to miss out. They have tried Village Resident Bess Lawton everything from Asian enjoys avocado toast on a restaurants, seafood, Swanky Dining Outing to a barbecue and much more. Lowcountry restaurant. On one of their recent brunch outings, Bess Lawton even tried the latest trend in dining, avocado toast, and she was thrilled!

Village resident Clif Green celebrated his 90th birthday in a most unique way. On May 29, he hosted the morning Dive Show at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston. The Dive Show Clif Green (with a friendly acquarium allows patrons to interact diver in the background) with a diver and discover why the animals that reside there are real ocean superheroes. He was surrounded by friends, family, sea animals and patrons.

The July trip was to the Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island, which is very popular with locals. The dinner was delicious and enjoyed by all. Afterwards, they went below the restaurant to “The Bearded Cat’s Sweet Shop,” and enjoyed gelato, which is the best way to polish off a delicious dinner during hot summer days. On the way home from dinner, the group was already plotting its next outing, and they decided next month they would check out an Italian restaurant located on Johns Island called Wild Olive.

Many residents from The Village travelled to see Clif host the Dive Show at the SC Aquarium in Charleston.

Clif was among the first class of volunteers at the SC Aquarium, which opened in May of 2000, and he hosted many such Dive Shows for audiences over the years. Although Clif “retired” from his volunteer duties at the age of 85, he has continued to support the mission of the SC Aquarium over the past 19 years. Surrounded by friends, family, sea animals, and aquarium patrons, Clif remarked, “I celebrated my 80th birthday by hosting the Dive Show, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my 90th birthday. The Aquarium is a big part of my life.” Village residents enjoy gelato at the Bearded Cat’s Sweet Shop. 38

Father’s Day

Traditions give us something to look forward to and something to reflect on, and a favorite tradition at The Village is the Father’s Day Celebration. Each year, all the residents and their families are invited to honor fathers with a barbecue in the Creative Arts Center. The food is provided by the Dining Services Department, but the Maintenance Department team does all of the grilling. It is wonderful!

Mr. Willie Nelson provides a sweet serenade. 39
