It Takes a Village
T
he old saying “it takes a village” could not be more true for Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina (PCSC), especially when the first community was built in Summerville. In the late 1950s, Mrs. Geraldine “Deanie” Worrell (right) traveled to churches around the state, telling the story of Presbyterian Home (now The Village at Summerville) that opened in 1956. Each time she visited a church, she would come home with her station wagon filled to the brim with donations. Presbyterian Women of the churches in Anderson, Newberry, Columbia, Kingstree, Florence, Camden and the surrounding areas collected linens, which she delivered to Summerville. They also saved soup labels to obtain the first bus for the community. This spirit of generous giving has continued over the past 62 years.

PCSC is a ministry you share with us. Residents, family members, employees, volunteers, donors, members of the Board of Trustees, members of the Foundation Board, and Ambassadors all help to tell the story. The more people who hear the story and learn about the ministry, the more people will understand about the commitment PCSC has to seniors and how their mission dollars and other gifts are being used. Each year PCSC receives a number of different types of gifts and they benefit the communities in abundant ways. Over the last year, the Foundation has been able to provide unique and needed additions to the communities, as well as charitable care. In this issue, we highlight our donors and look at some of the ways their gifts have made a difference in our ministry.
In Appreciation of Our Employees
P
resbyterian Communities of South Carolina has been blessed with wonderful folks who embody our mission. While our campuses are beautiful, it is the people who fill them that bring life to our communities. This spring and summer, the residents and staff have had to adapt to changing regulations and restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19.
To say it has been challenging would be an understatement. However, the staff worked tirelessly and the residents responded amazingly. The Executive Director of The Village at Summerville, Tim Barresi, said, “The response of the Summerville team has been nothing short of heroic. Since the pandemic began they have embraced 100% our PCSC mission of ensuring a high quality of life for
our residents, despite the challenges COVID-19 has presented. It truly continued on page 4
