Welcome to A One-of-a-Kind Neighborhood Excitement continues to build as The Village at Summerville makes significant progress on the new memory support neighborhood: Evergreen House. From Evergreen House’s inception, Jennifer Brush, MA, CCC/SLP, worked in conjunction with Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina and McMillan Pazdan and Smith Architects to design the memory support neighborhood, the first intentionally designed building of its kind in the United States. Jennifer is the only trainer in the U.S. certified by the Association of Montessori Internationale (AMI) for Montessori for Aging and Dementia and one of two trainers of trainers in the world with this exclusive expertise. The building is already being presented as the gold standard for memory support design at national and international events. Care Partners at Evergreen House are trained in the Montessori philosophy for dementia care by Jennifer and her team. These special Care Partners collect a thorough history of the resident and collaborate with the resident and his or her family to identify roles that will provide meaningful engagement. Grace and courtesy are used during all communications to support relationship building and independence. Care Partners practice with residents to help them relearn previous life roles as well as learn new roles they may enjoy. The more residents are routinely engaged in practice, the more they are able to do on their own and many times perform the role independently. The activities and roles happen as a normal course of the day, just like they would if the person was living at home. Specially designed signage invites residents to participate in normalizing life tasks; familiar roles include setting the table, helping with meal preparation, watering flowers, or doing laundry.

App 2021 rec D iat onor ion Issu e While the most familiar usage of the word evergreen refers to trees and shrubs that have green leaves throughout the entire year, the word also has another meaning – one that is particularly applicable to the groundbreaking concept of Montessori for Aging and Dementia. Evergreen is something that doesn’t change with the seasons, something that is timeless and does not become obsolete. That is the intention of Montessori-based memory support, which helps residents feel useful, valuable and relevant by rekindling past roles and tasks so they can make meaningful contributions to their present life and community.

Residents involved with meaningful and purposeful roles experience an environment where they enjoy making contributions and have lower levels of anxiety and confusion often seen in individuals with dementia. Evergreen House is expected to be completed and to welcome new residents around December 2021. www.PresCommunities.org

From The Chief Executive Officer

What Makes Presbyterian Communities Special (and a Great Place to Live)? There are a number of answers to that question, all of which are true. Often, those who know about Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina will point to: • • • • •

the faith-based nature of its mission the staff who give wonderful hands-on care and attention to the residents the Presbyterian churches who formed and support PCSC the individual donors who invest so generously in this ministry the volunteers to give selflessly of their time to bless those we serve

These all make PCSC special and you will often see these lifted up and acknowledged with gratitude in the pages of Community Connections. But there is another important factor that makes PCSC special, something we know deep in our hearts, but perhaps don’t name outright as often as we should. A few years ago one of our Trustees and I were conducting a focus group with some residents at a particular community. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand about where the residents thought we were excelling, where they thought we needed to get better, and what things about living with us mattered most to them. These were folks who loved their community and wanted the best not only for themselves, but also for those who would come after them. When this time of learning and sharing was over, and everyone had left, the Trustee and I were putting our coats on and preparing to leave, as well. One gentleman happened to come back in the room to retrieve the hat he had forgotten. As he was putting it on, he said to us, “You know, there is one more thing that makes living here special that I wish I had mentioned during our meeting.” 2

“What is that?” I asked. “The people,” he replied. I am embarrassed to tell you that I did not immediately follow where he was going. I said, “Oh, you appreciate the staff!” He then looked at me like I was a bit dense, paused for a moment, and then said, “Well, the staff is great, but I was really talking about the other residents. They are the ones who make living here really special.” How right he was, and how slow I was on the uptake! While the churches, donors, volunteers and staff do so much for the residents, it is so true that so much of the special character of living at a Presbyterian Community comes from the residents themselves. They have a special character that can be seen in the way they support one another in ways big and small. It can be felt in the fellowship they share with each other in close friendships, as well as in large gatherings. It is experienced in smiles and cheery words, as well as in attentiveness to those experiencing loss. The residents are so much more than receivers. They are givers. Moreover, they not only give to one another in countless ways, they give to the staff, making PCSC a better and more satisfying place to work. What a privilege it is to serve in communities like ours, which are made so special by the ones who live there!

Foundation Report

Continuing a Tradition of Generosity and Charitable Care

T

he Mother’s Day Offering is one of the hallmarks of Presbyterian Communities. Many folks know about our ministry because this offering has been collected in Presbyterian churches for over 60 years. Last year, we were able to provide charitable care for 31 residents who could no longer afford to live with us. The Mother’s Day Offering was a significant resource in supporting our ability to provide this incredible blessing to residents, as well as give peace of mind to their families. The contributions collected through July 31 remind us that generous churches and donors find the work and mission of Presbyterian Communities important. It is because of these faithful commitments that we are able to continue to provide care for those who outlive their life savings through no fault of their own. As you can see in the chart at right, the pandemic affected charitable giving in 2020. We give thanks to God for the increased giving in 2021. The amount collected for 2021 will continue to increase in the upcoming weeks. We ask churches to remit their collection of the Mother’s Day Offering if they have not already done so. We need your support. Please consider making a gift today to support this vital ministry. You can use the enclosed envelope and designate your contribution to “Mother’s Day” if you would like us to count it toward this important campaign.

Jenn Stanley, Director of Foundation Services and Church Relations

Thank you to all of the faithful churches and individuals who share about the Mother’s Day Offering each year. One hundred percent of your gift goes to support charitable care for residents.

The James F. Emerson Scholarship Fund at The Village at Summerville “Sometimes in life you may be given an opportunity to meet someone who you know is special. In my case, I had the privilege of meeting Jim Emerson, who was already a legend in the senior living field, known for his integrity, experience and knowledge, and he used his expertise to coach, mentor, encourage and support those who were willing to listen.”

Katherine R. Ligon Former President and CEO of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina Jim Emerson

Jim Emerson was the Chief Executive Officer of Westminster Communities of Florida for 28 years and is a highly regarded national expert on aging and senior living issues. He lead Westminster’s growth from 4 to 20 communities and is frequently engaged to advise legislators, lenders, and developers based on his national consulting experience and service to the senior living industry. Jim Emerson offered to spend time with PCSC and Kathy Ligon as she began her new role as President and CEO in 2007. He met with the Board of Trustees, visited the PCSC communities, and generously shared his thoughts and knowledge with her, while providing guidance and encouragement. Current President and CEO, Franklin Fant, was serving as a PCSC Board member during that time and recalled his experience with Jim, “I first met Jim many years ago at a PCSC Board retreat when I was a fairly new 4

Trustee. As a friend of Kathy’s, Jim spent a couple of days with us at no charge. Being a leader and authority in the senior living field, he really opened our eyes to the untapped opportunities before us to strengthen PCSC’s ministry and better serve our residents.” Over the years, Jim has continued to work with PCSC in a variety of ways. Sometimes this was as a paid consultant. Other times, he invested himself in our organization gratis, out of his sheer enjoyment of helping make senior living organizations stronger and better. He has taken a very real and personal interest in Presbyterian Communities and its leadership, and has always been ready to help the organization in any way he can. “During my first year as President and CEO,” shared Franklin, “Jim was extremely generous with his time in advising me, helping me

frame issues and think through them. Jim has had a deep influence in shaping my understanding of leading a non-profit and working to preserve and enhance its mission in a quickly changing world.” To thank and honor Jim for his commitment to PCSC, Franklin and Kathy have generously established the James F. Emerson Scholarship Fund at The Village at Summerville. Having a scholarship fund for team members at each community has been a goal of PCSC for a number of years. These funds will provide financial support for those trying to better their skills or learn a new skill by continuing their education. Out of its own gratitude for Jim’s service to PCSC, the Board of Trustees and the Directors of the PCSC Foundation recently issued a joint resolution recognizing Jim’s many important contributions to PCSC over the years. This

PCSC News resolution also added $30,000 to endow the Emerson Scholarship Fund, in addition to Franklin and Kathy’s lead gifts. “As the epitome of a coach and lifelong learner, it seems that an education fund, to be used for employee scholarships, is the perfect way to honor Jim,” explained Kathy. “It is my privilege to be a part of establishing the James F. Emerson Scholarship Fund as a token of my appreciation for his time, guidance and support, and as a tangible way to honor him and his many contributions to me and to this organization. It is my prayer that PCSC team members and the residents they serve will be blessed by the opportunities provided by this scholarship fund.” Franklin added, “Jim’s influence has not just been on Kathy and me. As I am fond of telling him, his fingerprints are all over this organization. Through his work with our Board and other members of PCSC’s leadership team over the years, our organization has become a more effective, more resilient, and healthier non-profit than it would otherwise be. Establishing this scholarship fund in Jim’s name has been a true joy, and something of which he is most deserving. It is so fitting that through the Emerson Fund, staff at The Village will have an opportunity to learn and grow in their own abilities to serve older adults.”

Meet Anna Cain, Director of Communication and Outreach In May 2021, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina began a search to fill a new position for Communication and Outreach. PCSC was looking for someone who could develop a cohesive program to generate leads for prospective residents, support community Sales and Marketing Directors, grow brand recognition, and oversee all social media platforms. In August, Anna Cain was announced as the new Director of Communications and Outreach. Anna joined PCSC with over 19 years of experience in the senior living industry since graduating from Presbyterian College. She has held roles in senior living sales and marketing and has served as an Executive Director for the last seven years. In addition, Anna is a speaker and educator, a Certified Dementia Specialist, and has experience serving as a Stephen Minister at her church. Anna shared during her interview that while attending Presbyterian College she had volunteered at The Clinton Presbyterian Community and this experience confirmed her strong interest in working with seniors. Chief Operating Officer Mandy Stamper said, “I am so thrilled to work with Anna in this new position for PCSC. Her experience in the field, passion for residents, and her deep Presbyterian roots make her a perfect addition to our team.” In this new role, Anna’s primary work is to develop programs to build PCSC brand awareness and align outreach and other marketing efforts with overall marketing strategies.

An Intentional Legacy of Caring

Many people have expressed their love for the PCSC ministry and the seniors we serve by including us in their estate planning. If you are one of these, we ask that you let us know so that we can help ensure your wishes are carried out consistently with your intentions. We also like to honor these folks by including them in The Good Samaritan Society at PCSC, unless, of course, they desire to remain anonymous.

Considering making a planned gift for the benefit of PCSC?

S

ome charitable gifts to Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina are made out of joyful and generous spontaneity. Others are made only after a period of careful thought, prayer and planning. Among the gifts in this second category are those that come to PCSC after the donor’s death: gifts made through one’s will, a trust, an IRA, a life insurance policy or other means. These kinds of gifts, by which one leaves an intentional legacy of caring, are commonly referred to as planned gifts because they typically involve some degree of extra “planning ahead.” Some planned gifts are relatively easy to make. For instance, it is fairly simple to make PCSC Foundation the beneficiary of a

8

life insurance policy or an IRA. All that is needed is to fill out a form provided by the insurance company or financial institution. Other planned gifts may require the services of an attorney. PCSC values every gift received, but planned gifts are particularly meaningful simply because in aggregate they represent the lion’s share of the donations received in any given year. In 2019, PCSC received over $1.6 million from planned gifts, and in 2020, we received just over $910,000. When you make a planned gift to PCSC, your donation is much like drops of water falling into a pond – becoming part of a greater body of good works, the ripples continue far into the future.

Will you be one of those who leaves an intentional legacy of caring for seniors? If so, contact Jenn Paden Stanley, Director of Foundation Services and Church Relations, for more information: (803) 772-5885 Jenn.Stanley@PresComm.org You can also return the envelope enclosed in this newsletter and check the box requesting information about estate planning. Thank You For Your Generosity The Good Samaritan Society recognizes the generosity of people who establish gifts through estate plans (that is, through their wills or other planned giving strategies) for the future of residents of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina. Who is a member of The Good Samaritan Society? Anyone who notifies PCSC in writing that a provision has been made for its mission and ministry through a bequest or other planned gifts will be a member. Besides one’s will, planned gifts include naming PCSC in a charitable trust, charitable gift annuity, retirement plan (such as an IRA, 401-k or 403-b) or life insurance policy. Why should I notify PCSC of my plans? First, we want to thank you for your generosity. Second, we want to make sure we understand how you intend for your gift to be used. Please let PCSC know of your planned gift by contacting the Foundation Services office at (803) 772-5885. You can also use the enclosed envelope to notify us. How are members identified? With your permission, your membership in The Good Samaritan Society will be announced in Community Connections. Breaking Free from Quarantine Talent Showcase!

The talent at the Columbia Community never disappoints, and this year was no different! The Breaking Free from Quarantine Talent Showcase featured both staff and resident comedians, singers and musicians. Making their talent debut, our new Ukulele and Flute group, the Flukes – which includes Wellness Director Jenny Nance on the flute and residents who have been taking our recent ukulele class – brought down the house. We also welcomed back some acts we have seen in the past such as Life Enrichment Coordinator Kimberley Koon’s Penguin comedy act, the vocals of resident Jim McDonald and Life Enrichment Director Amy McCormack, some grand surprises like resident Betty Killian’s comedic song “Baptist to the Bone” and Assistant Director of Nursing Crystal Vance’s beautiful rendition of “Your Song” by Elton John. We are so proud of our staff and residents who participated and are looking forward to January’s Beat the Winter Blues Talent Show!

Shagging Under The Stars

On August 18, residents of The Columbia Presbyterian Community let loose and enjoyed a celebration to remember! The evening began with appetizers and wine and continued with a beachthemed dinner consisting of beef kabobs with pineapple, jicama salad, oysters, salmon sliders, baked potato bars, roasted corn, parfaits and shrimp cocktail. The Beachtime Band, led by Bob Michalski performed old beach music favorites by the Platters, the Tams, Jimmy Buffet, the Drifters and many more while the Palmetto Shag Club Dancers showed off their shag dancing talents and encouraged others to dance with them. It was a night of great food, laughs and great friends!

Residents Enjoy Giving Back!

Residents at the Columbia Community love to give back – both within our own community and to the greater community beyond our campus. Annually, residents have the option to contribute $20 to the Staff School Supplies Fund. This year, residents raised $950 for school supplies and distributed the bags to very appreciative staff at the local school! The Happy Hookers is a group of residents who use their sewing and crafting talents to give to those in need. This year, they are making sock dolls and toddler dresses to use for the Operation Christmas Child program. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. Through this project, Samaritan’s Purse partners with the local church worldwide to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and make disciples of the nations. The ladies have created baby dresses and sock dolls to ship all over the world!

In addition to these ministries, our residents all year round contribute to the community within. We have groups that take care of the plants, plan for the upcoming months activities, make flower arrangements for the tables, celebrate other residents on their birthdays, visit with those who need a friend, make cards for and welcome and mentor new residents, and more! Back-to-school supplies ready to deliver!

A Simple Act of Love

Right: Amy McCormack, Sandra Kerby, Nancy Jacobs and Eloise Wooden.

Holy Casseroley was started by a group of women at Providence Presbyterian Church including our Jasmine Place Life Enrichment Coordinator, Cindy Enfinger. The mission of the group is, “To deliver a homemade casserole to a neighbor that could benefit from a simple act of love.” They collaborate with other local ministries and school districts to find out what families may need assistance. They are currently serving the West Columbia and Cayce areas and plan to branch out from there! The Columbia ladies put together casseroles and freeze them and Cindy brings them to Providence Presbyterian Church to be delivered!

Foothills When metal artwork was popular in the mid-1970s, Paul and Thursa Laufenschlager were inspired to produce the artwork shown here. The inspiration for this work is the Apostles’ Creed in which we confess our faith in God the Father, our Creator; God the Son, our redeeming Savior; and the Holy Spirit, our Sanctifier. According to Paul, the closing words of the Creed, “I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting,” are key to understanding this artwork. The new life depicted by blooming dogwood and the butterflies emerging from their cocoons remind us of the new life in Christ we have now and is yet to come.

Laurel Crest Be Scam-Smart!

Scams continue to become more prevalent in our society and unfortunately the elderly are often targets for these scammers. Laurel Crest was blessed to have Anna Rushton, Community Outreach Coodinator with the South Carolina Attorney General’s office, come to the community and present a seminar to our residents on how to avoid being a victim of scams.

Residents Enjoy A Taste of France! Laurel Crest residents are always looking for an opportunity to have a celebration. After our big July 4th picnic, some residents asked if we could celebrate Bastille Day and enjoy some French cuisine. Why not? Our dining services team jumped right in and created a culinary delight for the residents to enjoy! Ernie Magaro & Bonnie Schneider
