Making her professional piano debut in New York at age 24, Sally received top reviews from notable critics, including the following accolades: “Impressive is Miss MacArthur’s crispness of articulation; clear, bell-like tone in the treble; and its lack of sham and untoward show. She is wealthy with attractive gifts.”

In addition to concertizing, entertaining in country clubs, restaurants and hotels, Sally taught piano lessons for many years. Following the sisters’ move to Greenville, South Carolina, in 1996, Sally played the piano at Belk’s department store in Haywood Mall for 14 years and entertained guests with piano music at the Embassy Suites Hotel during Sunday brunch.
ith deep gratitude, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina is honored to share the generous legacy of Sally MacArthur and a bit of her life story. Sally was a beloved resident at The Foothills Retirement Community in Easley. Upon her passing in February 2021 she left the entirety of her $1.3 million estate to PCSC. Sally designated that her gift be placed in PCSC’s Resident Aid Endowment for the benefit of residents needing charitable care. She wanted to make an investment so that those who come to live at Presbyterian Communities would know that they will always have a place to call “home.” The ministry of charitable care provides financial assistance to residents who, after years of living at PCSC, have come to a point where their life’s savings can no longer cover their monthly fees.
Sally began painting at a later age, specializing in portraiture. Her portraits of the four Gospel writers hang in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville,

I include myself in that group. I have experienced these blessings as a family member of residents and as a former pastor whose congregants still live at our Howcommunities.dothese blessings come to pass? They happen because churches and individuals step forward with a variety of gifts. Some of these gifts come in the form of volunteers who spend time and energy on our campuses. Some of these gifts come from the efforts of faithful staff members who find meaning and purpose in their work of serving our residents. Some of these gifts come from the special character of the residents themselves, whose kindness and joy for life uplifts those around them. And some of these gifts come in the form of financial support. While we honor and give thanks for all these gifts, this issue of Community Connections is dedicated to lifting up the generosity of our donors. It was through the charitable contributions of churches and individuals that the ministry of PCSC was built and established in the first place. Through the ongoing contributions of donors, this ministry continues to be strengthened and sustained for today and tomorrow.
financial gifts. They can be seen in the lives of residents whose cost of care outstrips their life’s savings, but who nevertheless continue to have a happy home with us because generous donors provide charitable care. They can be seen in exercise equipment donors have purchased and in field trips they have funded. They are even seen in gifts that support staff education and provide assistance to staff experiencing one-time financial crises. Of course, we cannot forget that over all of the generous giving, the energetic volunteering, the devoted efforts of our staff, and the very gift of the residents themselves, God’s blesses these important contributions to unify and make them effective. It is not unlike what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” Donors donate, volunteers volunteer, and staff members labor, but God gives the growth and blessing to PCSC and its residents. Thanks be to God!

hanks to a generous gift from the estate of former resident Bet Phillips, The Florence Presbyterian Community has received a significant refresh of its main entrance and buildings.
Bet’s will gave no specific instructions for how the funds should be spent, except that they were to be used for the Florence Community. Over the last year, the main driveway and parking areas have been repaved, new landscaping has been installed along the drive and front of the main building, and the brick on the front of the main building has been painted white. In addition, the front porch (where the residents are fond of sitting and visiting) has been renovated with new tile flooring, new porch rails, ceiling fans and lighting. The porte cochere has also been refreshed.

The Laurel Crest community gives thanks to God for the gift of a very special volunteer, Lois McLeod. She possesses many gifts and is patient and gracious. She serves at happy hour, calls Bingo and helps at other events. She even serves as an amazing accompanist on the piano for the Laurel Crest Resident Chorus.
“Sally’s enthusiasm for life was contagious and inspirational,” says Kitty Young, her copersonal representative. “If she didn’t know how to do something, she would learn how to do it by reading, getting a tutor or observing others. It was a privilege to be her ‘surrogate sister’.”
Her other co-personal representative, Jane Sykes, shares, “Sally may have been petite in stature, but she could light up a room with her winsome personality. She possessed a keen mind and took great delight and joy in bringing music to the hearts of others. I have been blessed by her example of PCSCjoy.”
Those who knew her can attest that she lived each phase of her life with the assurance that the Lord Jesus had led and sustained her, and she rested in the hope, expectation and assurance of eternal life with God.
Lois has been playing the piano since she was a small child, and she was a church organist from the age of 14 until COVID arrived. She holds bachelor’s degrees in music and psychology and master’s degrees in music education and public administration. Her early work history was in the Commissioner’s Office of Department of Juvenile Justice and in the South Carolina Supreme Court’s Office of Court Administration. Her longest-held position was in the U.S. District Court as a human resources manager and Director of Training.
has been truly privileged to serve such a person as Sally MacArthur was. It was an honor to be able to share in her life while she lived at PCSC, and it is a blessing now to carry on her charitable intentions through the wonderful gift she has made. She leaves a lasting legacy to this ministry and to those it serves. Lois Debbieshares.Bailey, Director of Community Life Services, adds, “Lois is a multi-talented and versatile individual. She identifies areas of need and fills them with great solutions. She has recently organized a Needlearts Hour to replace our knitting circle and engage more residents. She is a wonderful blessing to us. We are so thankful for her and her spirit to serve!”

PCSC News where4 Sally was an active member. Her artwork also hangs at the Foothills Community. After moving to Foothills in September 2017, Sally enjoyed making many new friends and participating in Bible Study and artistic activities, as well as playing the piano for various occasions, including Vespers. Sally’s favorite Bible verse was Jeremiah 29:11: “I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Lois McLeod is a lady of many talents, but one of her chief talents is the piano and organ.
“Volunteering at Laurel Crest was a retirement goal. While it was delayed by COVID, it has now become a reality, and such a blessing for me. I have come to love the people here,”
Laurel Crest Residents Lois McLeod is ready to help however she is needed. Here, she attends the buffet line at a Spring Meeting for PCSC Ambassadors.
A certified application specialist in Microsoft Word, Lois is willing to help anyone with questions. She says she has always been happiest making positive contributions to people.

PCSC Welcomes New Head of Culinary Services
PCSC looks forward to rolling out its new Division of Culinary Services and to the enhanced experience this will give its residents.
We all know that nutritious food is essential for sustaining life, but most of us are also deeply aware that tasty and appealing food is important for the enjoyment of life. Consequently, one of the most critical aspects of resident satisfaction in senior living is dining services. For many years, Presbyterian Communities has outsourced management of its dining operations to contractors. These contractors have managed the day-today operations of its kitchens and dining areas, as well as provided dieticians to serve in PCSC’s clinical settings.
PCSC to Start Its Own Dining Division
Over the last few months, however, PCSC’s management has become increasingly convinced that now is the time for PCSC to take control of its dining “destiny” by bringing dining operations completely in-house.
PCSC News 5
Divisional Director of Culinary Services. Culinary Services is a new division for PCSC, so this role brings with it significant responsibility for a successful launch in early September. While this is a new role at PCSC, Jennifer has a number of years of experience in PCSC’s dining operations. Shortly after moving to South Carolina in 2018, Jennifer started as the Director of Dining Services at The Clinton Presbyterian Community, working as an employee of PCSC’s dining management company. Most recently, Jennifer served with this vendor as Operations Support Manager for dining services across all of PCSC’s communities. “Rolling out a new culinary division to bring our dining management in-house is a significant event in the life of PCSC,” said Franklin Fant, Chief Executive Officer. “Over the years of working with Jennifer, she has proven herself to be a reliable and effective leader. We are excited to have someone coming into this role who already has deep institutional knowledge of PCSC and who has already established so much trust with those she has worked with,” he added. Jennifer began her career in culinary services working as a server in a 200-bed skilled nursing facility for a Life Plan Community in New York while in high school and college. After graduating college from SUNY, Oswego, she began a new position with the same community as the Dining Director for their 60-bed assisted living community. As Divisional Director of Culinary Services for PCSC, Jennifer will direct and lead the vision for the exceptional culinary experience PCSC intends for its residents.
This transition will take place on Tuesday, September 6, and PCSC has been busy over the last few months preparing for this significant moment. Food service vendors have been selected, as have software systems needed to manage dining operations. Key staff have been recruited, and management is excited to see a highly talented and creative team of culinary and dietary professionals coming together.

Carol has had other significant travel and life experiences beyond her dual-career as teacher and mother, some of which can only be imagined. She has created delicious wild game recipes that have filled four published cookbooks. She has lived and taught in Guatemala. She has served as an itinerant instructor for arts and crafts on many cruises, having taken 75 cruises in all. It is an understatement to say that she has an exciting story to tell. Now others can read about her life’s story in her book, Adventures from the Edge. Moreover, because of Carol’s desire to tell her story and her love of writing, she realized that she had something to offer her fellow residents and the new community she was living in by telling the stories of others. Having already told the stories of three residents and with several more to start working on, Carol states, “Behind the wrinkles, and under the white heads, lie exciting stories of exciting lives.”
The full title of Carol’s book is Adventures From the Edge: How a Quintessential Wife and Mother Morphed into a Free and Independent Warrior Marching Through Life with Awe and Wonder. It is available on Amazon in a full range of printed, Kindle and audio formats. As the back cover shares, it is filled with, “Many frightening, funny, and factual accounts (that) lead the reader to the next adventure on the edge.”
Elizabeth was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration and Minor in Business from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She then earned her Master in Public Health in Health Policy and Management from the University of South Carolina. She most recently worked as the Executive Director of a senior living community in West Ashley.
Carol Edwards Has a Story to Tell Carol Edwards and her husband, Bob, moved into The Florence Presbyterian Community in the summer of 2021. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Carol has not only lived a remarkable life both professionally and personally, she has developed a talent for telling her story and the stories of others. One of Carol’s careers was teaching for 28 years, during which time she became a finalist for the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Award. She was also awarded the George Washington Freedom Foundation medal for excellence in economic education. Her other and more important career was being a mom, and now a grandmother. While being interviewed for this article, Carol was hand stitching Christmas stockings for all of her grandchildren.

Board of Trustees, providing guidance in the ongoing development of the ministry. “On the one hand, it is highly important to note that the generosity and devotion of the Rhodes to our mission of serving seniors provided a foundational gift for The Village,” said PCSC CEO Franklin Fant. “But on the other hand, their gift was also foundational for the other five campuses. After all, it was from the successful ministry of The Village, the original Presbyterian Home, that the operations of our other communities were made possible.”

resbyterian Communities had the occasion to fondly remember Dorothy McLeod Rhodes upon her passing this summer. She and her husband, Jack (who died in 2017), played a key role in the formation and growth of PCSC. In the early 1950s, the Synod of South Carolina (which founded PCSC) was trying to determine where to build its new (and first) retirement community. A generous gift of 26 pine-covered acres in Summerville by the Rhodes in 1953 answered that question. On this site, the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina opened its doors in 1958. Years later, the name of the community was changed to The Village at Summerville.

Clinton 28 Clinton CelebratesDinnerNewcomers
Putting and Pouring for Alzheimer’s June was Alzheimer’s Awareness month. To raise awareness and to inspire action, Clinton Community residents decided to go purple in June. The community joined others across the nation on The Longest Day to show their support. Residents participated in a Putt and Pour to join the fight against Alzheimer’s. They sported the color purple, enjoyed mimosas, played mini-golf and soaked up warm summer sunshine on the day with the most light. Left: Resident Mary Alice Schmoyer sports purple and enjoys the sunshine on The Longest Day. Right: Residents Chuck Hull and Jim Foote play a round of mini-golf.
A Visit to Lush Acres Farm
Over the years, the Clinton Community has enjoyed special events and connections with the Thornwell campus, students and staff. In May, Clinton Community residents had the special opportunity to travel to Thornwell’s campus to tour and view their vibrant new enterprise, Lush Acres Farm. At the fully working farm, residents had the opportunity to purchase specialty crops, meats and strawberries at the market. Residents also visited the farm animals, toured the area, and learned more of the farm’s growing future. Following the trip, residents and staff savored the sweet life of the community with bowls of fresh strawberries from the farm and rich vanilla ice cream drizzled whippedtoppedchocolatewithandwithcream.
Right: Residents Mary Creighton and Anne Pitts check out some of the livestock at Lush Acres Farm.
Clinton residents visiting Thornwell included (L-R) Mary Creighton, Martha Simmons, Anne Pitts, Henry Brandt, Dot Daniel and Laura Ashley. They were accompanied by Jennifer Harris, Director of Life Enrichment.
The Clinton Community created an unforgettable dining experience during the Bloom Where You Are Planted Newcomer’s Dinner. The newest Clinton Community residents were officially welcomed and celebrated. Flowers and blooms adorned the tables, plants were displayed and gifted to commemorate the moment, and residents and staff spoke of changes in season and the welcoming of a fresh start. Residents enjoyed the incredible meal prepared by dining services, followed by a special performance of folk music and the loveliest old-time fiddle tunes. Budding smiles and cherished memories were evident throughout the room as all enjoyed a night that will be remembered for years to come.
Left: Resident Davis Sexton proudly displays his football signed by Clemson University’s head coach “Dabo” Sweeney with the message, “Stay Strong!”
Resident Chuck Hull enjoys being celebrated during Clinton’s Father’s Day celebration.

The room even includes foot stools to put your feet up while you watch. Wellness Director Jenny Nance hosts a Scenic Cycle class where residents sit and cycle while watching a bicycle tour around different parts of the world on the big screen.
Residents can also utilize this room for private engagements with their friends and families. For example, Friday nights are “Group Therapy” sessions where some resident friends gather for wine and pizza. The possibilities are endless, and the community looks forward to holding many more unique programs in this room!
Above: Residents and staff get exercise pedaling while watching a virtual cycling tour on the big screen.
The Columbia Community’s Wellness Director challenged both residents and staff to do 1,000 push-ups during the month of July. Those not able to do push-ups on the floor were encouraged to do them on an incline or even against the wall. The first person to 1,000 was Columbia staff member Gwen Jackson.
The 1,000 Push-Up Challenge
Left: Residents Betty Salmond and Carolyn Lowe are serious about July’s Push-Up Challenge for staff and residents. Thanks to a very generous donation, The Columbia Presbyterian Community now has a beautiful new media room! With its plush velvet blue chairs, new carpet, 80" television, snack bar and modern art work, the room is a fantastic place to host movies, documentaries, presentations, Ted Talks, group discussions, Bible Studies and so many more smaller group programs.
A few finishing touches remain, and when the room is complete the commmunity will begin renovation on the downstairs C-Wing Parlor to create a Game Room where residents can play cards and board games, as well as hold small gatherings. How exciting for the Columbia Community!

Stacy’s vision, along with the talented women of Florence, helps weave the community closer and closer together.

Woven with Service & Love “Woven” by definition means, “Made or constructed by interlacing threads or strips of material into a whole.” At the Florence Community, Life Enrichment Director Stacy Shuler has incorporated a creative way to “weave” the values of service and engagement together throughout the community.
For national Nursing Home Week, the Florence staff took skilled residents around the world with experiences they created for them. These included culinary experiences, virtual tours, art, music and culture from the countries they “visited.” The week began in Germany with an airplane ride and a beer, brats and pretzels party.
Virtus Academy, a public charter school, created a class project in which their students came to the Florence Community and interviewed assisted living and independent living residents for their sixth grade history class. The students questioned residents about the differences in their eras from culture to automobiles, clothing, music, their high school days and more. Above, Joseph Steen smiles as he takes students from Virtus Academy through different stories from his life.
