To Flourish, Hope Garden Needs

Today, many familiar with behavioral science and eco-therapy confirm what our ancestors knew

long ago – nature heals, nature comforts and nature enlightens. In fact, nature therapy involves encouraging people to spend time in a “healing space” in nature, a place that transmits beauty, mystery and the life force.

Research reveals that natural environments have a positive impact

on health. What you see, hear and experience affect not only your mood, but your nervous, endocrine and immune systems as well. The results of being surrounded by nature can be improved blood pressure, respiration

rate, brain activity and hormone production. Because being surrounded by nature can address so many emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs, these spaces can become partners in healing, growth and hope.

Welcome to Rex Hope Garden Hope Garden is a peaceful haven, an island of peace tucked away at the bustling UNC REX Hospital, on the way to the Women's Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The garden was originally conceived by the bereavement committee within the Women’s and Children’s Department, which sought to create a space that would appeal to family members who needed a place where they could reflect, celebrate or just get away.

This holistic healing environment complements the latest innovations in treatment and care

available at UNC REX and serves as a place of refuge and solace for patients, families, visitors, medical staff and co-workers. The garden is a place for positive social interactions between physicians, patients and their families, enhancing social support and creating a sense of community.

Initially funded by the Women’s and Children’s Fund at the Rex Healthcare Foundation, the

Hope Garden project seeks to raise $50,000 toward the completion of the garden and its on-going maintenance. Help us create a place that cultivates hope and nurtures health. To explore donation and naming opportunities, please contact Katherine Stokes, Director of Development, at 919-784-4475 or Katherine.Stokes@unchealth.unc.edu.

CAUTION CAUTION CONSTRUCTION ZONE CAUTION CAUTION Take a behind-the-scenes look at the construction of the new Heart & Vascular Hospital at UNC REX. As part of the constuction, crews from Skanska have used a prefabrication process that allows portions of the hospital to be built offsite, brought in and then pieced together. This prefabrication process is somewhat new to the Triangle and has been instrumental in keeping the project on schedule for opening in early 2017.

OPENING EARLY 2017: World class care in the heart of Raleigh

nchearthospital.com

The Heart & Vascular Hospital is under construction on the UNC REX

Healthcare campus in Raleigh and is scheduled to open in early 2017. This eight-story, 306,000 square foot building will bring together UNC REX’s heart and vascular services in one location.

Every aspect of the facility was designed with the comfort of patients

and their families in mind. The design is based on research, best practices and input from UNC REX patients, physicians, clinicians and caregivers.

In addition, the hospital will have the latest technology for patient

care and procedures, as well as a state of the art learning institute and demonstration kitchen. Dedicated education space will make it easier for UNC REX physicians to continue providing education to other physicians throughout the world, add educational programs for patients and the community, and increase in-house training and education for staff.

The Patient Assistance Fund:

Help when major illness takes a financial toll A major illness is sometimes accompanied by an unwelcome side effect: financial hardship. Missed time from work, the costs of prescription medication, even paying for gas to and from treatment can tremendously strain patients and their families, adding to the sense of crisis in their lives. Fortunately, the Patient Assistance Fund at UNC Rex Healthcare provides a safety net for the neediest patients. When you give to this fund, you give peace of mind, allowing patients to focus on health and healing. The Patient Assistance Fund helps UNC REX patients with diagnoses other than cancer, including heart and vascular patients, those requiring daily wound care, and patients being treated for infections or other conditions who have a high risk of the condition recurring. Your help is especially important because it helps keep patients actively participating in their treatment. Your gift covers: •
