WELCOME
COME BACK WEL WEL COME COME BACK BACK
“The only constant is change!” This well-known quote, originally attributed to Heraclit, is still universally true, particularly for life on our beloved Island. And while every year sees changes, this summer will feel especially new in many regards. 8
www.ibiza-bible.com
So for better orientation let's get over the most weighty news this season! As Ibizan summers and visitors have come and gone, you could always rely on three things: The sun rises in the East, it sets in the West , and on Mondays and Thursdays there is Cocoon and Cream at
Amnesia. Well, not anymore: In a move that shocked clubland, Cocoon announced it’s departure from longtime venue Amnesia after 18 seasons, heading over to Pacha. To avoid going up against ever-so popular Circoloco, Sven Väth and his crew moved to Wednesday nights. Playa d'en Bossa’s new superclub Hï was quick in offering a new home for the iconic Cream brand on Sundays. Amnesia will now host popular brands Abode and Do not Sleep on their Thursdays, while on Mondays techno night Pyramid will replace Cocoon.
WELCOME Cream and Cocoon leaving their traditional homes are arguably the biggest, but certainly not the only moves in nightlife. Tale of Us’ popular Afterlife night moves to Hï and has released a tremendous lineup, spanning both floors. Crowd favourite Zoo Project in Benimussa Park switches to Sundays, now going up against Woomoon at Cova Santa rather than the more similar Ants at Ushuaïa on Saturdays. With all these changes going on, it's good to know that you'll still find some of your favourite parties where they were last year: Elrow continues Saturdays at Amnesia, Paradise stays at DC10 and Privilege again is hosting techno brand Resistance on Tuesdays. A very different kind of change will become apparent when you enter Pacha this summer. In their first big refurbishment after many years, the new owners had a new architect skillfully change the layout of the whole club, while keeping the traditional feeling of the finca that it used to be. Alterations include a new DJ booth and a vast extension of the dancefloor by getting rid of the walls forming what was once the Global Room. Bad news came for fans of the infamous West End of San Antonio. A new law for noise protection now bans the popular terraces at nighttime, forcing bars to close their open air premises at 11 pm (and indoor areas by 3 am). This is only true for a certain area in the West End though. Bars outside of this area, like Itaca, will still be able to stay open until 5 am. Which of these moves and changes will prove successful, which will fail and eventually have to be altered again? We'll know in a few months time. Only one thing is clear: Ibiza will never cease to surprise! www.ibiza-bible.com

DARIUS SYROSSIAN
DARIUS SYROSSIAN Hola Darius! Glad to know we'll have you back on the Island this season, with a brand new “Do not Sleep” residency on Thursday nights at Amnesia! On your Twitter account we gathered that this was quite a late decision and one that you did not take lightly. Why is that?
Yes, well for me to commit to another season on the island with a residency the most important thing would be that both the club and club owners we would be working with were on the same wavelength as the team. After weeks of negotiation with several different options my management and Electric Ibiza (the promoters of the event) came to the conclusion that Amnesia would be best suited to us. After being invited to fly out to Ibiza and meet the owner of Amnesia, Martin Ferrer, and the rest of the team, I knew then that I absolutely made the right decision to join Amnesia as a resident, so yes it wasn’t just a case of who’s waving the biggest chequebook, it’s about which club knows what we are about and wants to work with us to let us bring a good underground party to the island So the Amnesia Main Room it is! For you as a DJ, what are the main perks of this floor compared to others on the island?
This is so important to me, the room I would be playing in, I truly do this because I love it with a passion, making music and playing music, and if I’m playing it, I want the room to lend itself to the music I am playing, and because my style is very Balearic as in I can cover many genres from really deep soulful house all the way through to some heavy techno as well as touching on progressive 12
www.ibiza-bible.com
and also a lot of Chicago influenced house I need a room that allows for all of this. Sometimes you have these big events with huge rooms and harder techno and big anthems work easily in these rooms but then playing tracks for example that are a bit deeper and hypnotic this doesn’t work as well as it does in a more intimate club, and at the same time heavier tracks don’t work as well in a room that is more intimate, but I have played in the main room of Amnesia before and although it’s a big room, it has a very intimate feel, you are not so detached from the crowd and also, the sound system is hands down one of the best, if not the best, on the island. Can you reveal some of the artists playing for “Do not Sleep” over the summer?
Electric Ibiza works tirelessly to get the line-ups right of course but it’s not always easy with the exclusives and the way the Ibiza scene is at the moment. For 2018 we welcome back some of our friends and artists who release on the label but before I mention a few names I have to say that this year we are showing that DNS is more about talented artists booked on merit, not press hype or gimmicks, it’s ONLY the music that interests us, and nothing else, not an image or fake media hype. For example at the time of writing this, acts that we have confirmed so far are as follows, the legendary Robert Hood bringing his Floorpan thing to Ibiza, then we have Cassy & Josh Wink doing back2back for the first time. We have the heavier techno stuff like some cool b2b Nick Curly & Guti, Charlotte De Witte & Alan Fitzpatrick, Luigi Madonna, there’s more prog stuff like Dusky, also real artists like Anja Schneider & Mattias Kaden and of course upcoming talent like Mella Dee & Caleb Calloway, and then there are close mates of ours wAFF, but there is much more to come, as you can www.ibiza-bible.com
13
DARIUS SYROSSIAN see it’s a very international line up. Legendary U.S artists, and you also you have German, Italian, Belgian artists as well, so it’s not just a UK line up.
truly love the music, and some of the best crowd to DJ to. I’d rather play to these people than some rich guy who wants to sit at a table and flash the cash. I can’t speak for anyone else but our parties will always be aimed at music lovers not big spenders.
You will be also doing some “Warriors Do Not Sleep” parties in Barcelona and Ibiza with Steve Lawler. How did this come about and can you reveal how many there will be and the actual dates?
How long have you been coming to Ibiza and do you remember the first impression that you had?
Steve’s team and Do Not Sleep had a meeting and started to explore the idea of doing a series of collab shows with us both. We are doing some in the UK over the summer and we are doing 2 Warriors Do Not Sleep parties, the opening and the closing, we wanted to keep them exclusive and not overdo it. We actually both play the DNS Sonar off party in Barcelona and then have to jump on a jet on a crazy dash to get to Amnesia to play 3 hours b2b until sunrise.
I used to come years ago as a clubber when I was much younger, but my first residency was 2012 when I lived on the island, and it was the year VIVa Warriors started. It was a magical summer, not just the party and how successful it was in it’s first year, but everything about it, meeting like-minded people who all saw music as a passion, a way of life, not just something that you dance to at weekends in a club, I met fellow people from all over the world who eat music, sleep music, live music…
You've always been very outspoken and honest about the modern Ibiza and it’s VIP culture in some places. How would you rate current developments?
Do you see any signs of a reemergence of the real Ibiza spirit?
Well it's the only way I can be, I think being honest you will always be respected by real fans and may lose fake fans, and I don’t care if I lose any fans who may have liked me for anything other than my music so I’ll never change. The fact is those who love the true spirit of Ibiza, those that know that Ibiza was started by hippies who brought the whole idea of hedonism and partying know that this whole VIP thing flies totally in the face of everything that it’s about. There are already lots of places for wealthy people who don’t really care about music to go, such as Monte Carlo, Cannes, and everything has its place, but Ibiza being changed into one of those places for only the super rich and in the process losing its identity would be a shame. There are workers that come to Ibiza to work and earn just about enough to pay for a basic apartment so they can experience going clubbing, and these are the people that 14
DARIUS SYROSSIAN

I hope so, it needs to be a collective thing, people who live on the island coming together for example, also people who come to the island learning to respect the island, and not just treat it as some place to come and take gluttony and overconsumption to the next level. It has to start with this first, then from there music can be a way of life. My manager Neil who also runs Do Not Sleep with me lives on the island and in winter regularly goes for walks with his partner and cleans the beaches of rubbish. These small things make a big difference. Outside of the clubbing world, Ibiza struggles to cope with the masses during peak season. A real anti-tourist sentiment has emerged among some parts of the population. Have you ever personally experienced that as well?
I fully understand the locals’ frustration. I have seen www.ibiza-bible.com

DARIUS SYROSSIAN
hordes of EDM fans walking out of venues just littering the place, being crass and unsavoury in general. This is not how I saw people behave 20 years ago coming out of Space for example. I have lived 6 months of the year on the island every summer for the last 7 years and it pains me to see people disrespect the place. Tech house has become the most popular genre in electronic music, being called the "new EDM" by some. Why do you think tech house also gets a big deal of hate these days, and people ranting about it?
I think the negativity towards tech house as you put it is almost justified in a sense, it’s become too generic and some producers are being a little lazy, also some DJs playing it are not putting much thought into it and I think the press to some degree hyping a lot of acts who are cashing in on it are also a little to blame. I have made a big effort to move away from it although I wouldn’t say I really played it, remember tech house hasn’t always been be a dirty word. Terry Francis from Fabric, for example, would mean tech house to me when I first heard the term 20 years ago, but there seems to be this thing where tracks are being made, that all sound the same, and then you have DJs who are doing it to cash in and it’s not really their passion. They play it because they know it’s the lowest common denominator and it’s all about getting a reaction on the dance floor with a cheap build up and drop rather than being a proper DJ and telling a story with your set with the music you are playing. If you are a DJ and say you are playing for a reaction on the dance floor then are you really being an artist or are you just another DJ who is no different from hundreds of DJs up and down the country who play in commercial wine bars playing anthems for your average clubber to get a reaction? This is the reason I am launching my new label Moxy Muzik, I am not featuring any hype acts on the label it’s not something for some quick attention, it’s gonna be a labour of love. 16
www.ibiza-bible.com
With Moxy Muzic you recently started your second record label. What is the ethos behind it?
I want to show that music for the dance floor does not have to mean generic tech house. I fully agree that there is loads of rubbish cheap tech house out there that’s aimed at the dance floor with it’s build-ups and drops and after three weeks will sound old, but I also think a lot of people now think underground means music for the mind only and cannot be music for the dance floor. Of course it can, and this is the thing I want to show with my label. If you listen to Robert Hood’s releases, as himself or as Floorplan, it’s proper underground music but works perfectly on the dance floor. There are disco elements but there is techno too, also you can be deep and also be aimed at the dance floor. My first release Dance of the Shaman is exactly this, includes my original, as well as
remixes from Doc Martin and East End Dubs. All releases will be vinyl as well as digital. Will the label be different to the Do Not Sleep imprint?
Do Not Sleep is a label attached to the event and for that I help with the A&R whereas Moxy Muzik will be solely my own thing, and both vinyl as well as digital. It’s going to be artists who are producing music that I think will stand the test of time, tracks that will still sound great in 10 years. Tell us about what releases you have coming this summer?
As I mentioned earlier, I’m only taking on music from artists that are producing music for the love, who have their own sound and don’t make music to fit a fad! My first few releases are artists such as Phil Weeks, Christian Burkhardt, the legend Doc Martin, Man Pow-
er has returned an absolutely SUBLIME remix that is a beautiful piece of music. Wait until you hear it, proper music! I also have Tommy Vicari Jnr, and East End Dubs featuring too, that’s all on my own label Moxy Muzik when it is launched. Away from the label this summer I have productions coming out on Matthias Tanzmann’s Moon Harbour, Matador’s Rukus label, Nick Curly's 8 Bit label as well as a follow-up to my Hot Creations EP coming later in the summer. With the Amnesia residency and the new RINSE FM radio show plus a great deal of other projects and very busy touring schedule it’s all becoming another hectic summer, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Muchas gracias, see you at Amnesia!

From the first glance, a rather ordinary Ibicenco countryside finca, the club itself does not catch much of one’s eye from the outside. Back in the days, up until about 2003/2004, DC10 was an insider thing. Back then, people in the know went there on Monday mornings to carry on after the 22 hour marathon party that was “We Love“ at Space. Circoloco became a family get-together of night owls and DJs, locals and season workers.
“hallelujah“, when the place was in full action again for another session, shares a great memory of that time in the history of this venue.
It’s quite a thing when you drive back from Salinas beach on a late Monday afternoon in Ibiza. Located just 5 minutes outside of Playa d’en Bossa, right on the planes’ approach corridor to Ibiza airport, lies DC10, Ibiza’s most notorious club.
With the success, also a lot of trouble arrived. Due to licensing and other side stories, DC10 was forced to shut down a few times. One year the club was closed for almost a full season. Anyone who experienced these days, both the doubting feeling of whether the club would be open or not and the redemptive

location. Locals and season workers used to spend their afternoons there, hanging around, sipping drinks and listening to some fine tunes. Only one year later and after moving a few metres down the beach, Ushuaïa got quite famous with some cool afternoon parties. Actually the whole story with beach parties at Ushuaïa began with Leonardo
Cannistra, hosting Sundays, and after bringing Tania Vulcano and Luciano, totally smashing the place, the new star was born. Then, some smart heads had a vision, a concept and the professional background for something much bigger. So in 2011, the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel was born, again at a new location. The Fiesta hotel got a complete facelift during winter 2010/11 and a new name. Everything got refurbished, from the rooms to the restaurants, the bars and most importantly, the patio that is now Ibiza’s latest attraction. One thing that stands out when visiting Ushuaïa is the insane production values that are put into the shows: from state of the art sound systems to meticulous

10 GIGS
GIGS YOU SHOULDN’T MISS!
JUNE & JULY 2018 by our editor Matthias Daniel [@MatthiasDaniel on Twitter] CHARLOTTE DE WITTE at Pyramid Opening, Amnesia, June 4th Though considered an up and coming artist, Charlotte has been honing her skills for years. After releasing under a male pseudonym for some time she developed the courage to stand out of the shadows and present her dry and dark techno under her real name, as a female DJ in our scene. The Belgian is THE new face of techno and I'm sure she'll be all over the place in Ibiza this summer. 48
www.ibiza-bible.com
10 GIGS DIXON at Afterlife Opening, Hï, June 28th This will be Afterlife's first season at Hï, but a return in a way, as they started their Ibiza journey in what was club Space at the time. Dixon carefully selects his Ibiza appearances, which will make this a very rare opportunity to see his craft live. Also you got Tale of Us, Maceo Plex and Recondite's live show on the same night, so going there is actually a no-brainer. SOLOMUN at Cocoon, Pacha, June 27th A Cocoon Ibiza night at a different place than Amnesia? For over 19 years this seemed unimaginable but the German promoter is shaking things up this summer and why not try the new Cocoon when none less than the King of Pacha Solomun is Sven's guest in the booth. I am expecting one of Väth's inimitable warm up sets before Solomun plays his once-a-year Cocoon appearance at peak time.
KONSTANTIN SIBOLD at Solomun +1, Pacha, June 17th It was Konstantin's 2013 remix of 'No one gets left behind' that first drew our attention toward the young German artist from Stuttgart. The emotional deep house track was all over Ibiza, sound for the cheeky, forbidden villa-after. In hits like 'Mutter' and the Red Axes remix 'Sun my sweet sun' Sibold continued to develop a very 'Ibizan' style and it should merge perfectly with Solomun.
PATRICE BÄUMEL (AND LUCIANO) at Dystopia, Ushuaïa, July 6th Nomad- and Desert-House has become quite the fad on our island, and Dystopia will be Ushuaia’s take on the sound. On this day Patrice Bäumel will be offering his rather dark interpretation of the genre. 2017 proved to be his most successful year yet, and we can't wait to hear last year's superhit 'Glutes' being played after sundown in the open air.
JAMIE JONES at Black Coffee, Hï , June 23rd Not much has to be said about Jamie Jones, headliner of his own successful night over at DC10, one of the Ibiza greats. He should be an interesting addition to this party, especially since it's one of the very few occasions to see him DJ outside of his natural DC10 habitat. I would love them to try a b2b session.
SECRET CINEMA (AND MARCO CAROLA) at Music on, Amnesia, July 13th A key figure in the Dutch scene since the early 90s, Secret Cinema has always proved versatile in reinventing himself and his sound. What stays the same is his dark approach, the high energy and rather bizarre effects he incorporates into his fast techno tracks. I can't imagine his set sounding anywhere better than in Amnesia’s club room.
ALAN FITZPATRICK at Elrow, Amnesia, July 27th Elrow is king. While the extremely popular night is mainly renowned for its wacky production, it also offers a little something for the more advanced music lover every week. This particular night the icing on the cake is my favourite British producer Alan Fitzpatrick, playing his chunky, extroverted party-techno. Bring on those lilos! HONEY DIJON at Paradise, DC10, July 25th It's a great time for female artists breaking through in our scene, and Honey Dijon is one of the ladies at the very forefront of this welcoming new wave. The Chicago born producer, DJ and model is spreading her unique, Houseinfused signature sound all over the world right now, with sets at Panorama Bar, Output and Chicago’s Smart Bar. This will be tailor-made for the red DC10 terrace, don't miss it! CARL COX' BIRTHDAY PARTY at Resistance, Privilege, July 31st It's big Carl's birthday and you are invited! It wouldn't be just rude not to go, but it’d be plain stupid. Resistance has put up a wicked lineup with the guest of honor playing twice: once on the main stage and later continuing a b2b session with Nic Fanciulli in the smaller Vista Room until (let's hope) sunrise. This will be an absolute roadblock, mind you! www.ibiza-bible.com

ARTIST CHECK How time flies when you're having fun! We can't blame you for feeling old when we tell you that SIS' big breakthrough track “Trompeta” has its 10 year anniversary this summer.

As gifted as SIS is in producing, it is not his only talent. After a wild 2008 the DJ choosed to become a horse whisperer. As a means to get away from it all, SIS' choice to become a full-time horse trainer was far from obvious. But in 2013, when he concentrated his experiences outside the music world in the concept-album “Confidance” it suddenly all made sense, though. Another few years have passed since then, but SIS never lost sight of his other great passion in life anymore: making music.

SIS The Dancefloor Whisperer
It was THE signature tune of the Ibizan summer of 2008 which earned the German producer with Turkish roots "Track of the year" awards in several polls and bookings all over the world. Now in 2018, SIS is back for another Ibiza summer, playing for Bedouin at Heart.
SIS is playing Acid Sundays at Las Dalias and 3 shows for Saga @ Heart.
Want nomad and desert house? Here is the guy who championed the roots of this sound long before it got en vogue on the island. In his regular productions every few months SIS pursues a deep and playful sound, sporting a real knack of creating clever after-hour tunes with the odd folklorist sample. Over ten years have passed since his early “Orgsa”, “Nesrib” or “Trompeta” but the dancefloor whisperer still knows exactly what to do to make you feed right out of his hands. www.facebook.com/sisofficial www.ibiza-bible.com

ARTIST CHECK It’s past sunset, the open-air floor is packed, the dancefloor is full of dancing, heavily body-painted party animals. The DJ doesn’t seem to be putting up a performance for them - he is a part of them! At one with his audience and totally taken away by the music, his massive, curly shock of hair fluttering in the night air, barely held back by a helpless, plastic visor cap this is DEFEX. No, this is not just an exceptionally good but a normal Defex gig, and it’s happening whenever he plays. Such escalation wasn’t exactly written in Defex’s DNA. He grew up in quiet, rural Bavaria, Germany, where people only go to discotheques to find a mating partner and then stop partying when they marry them. This led to an almost ‘autistic’ understanding of electronic music, as it says in his bio. A couple of years ago DEFEX moved to Ibiza, where from a little finca in the countryside he is pulling the strings behind the weekly Zoo Project, one of Ibiza’s most beloved and famous open-air parties which this summer happen on Sundays at Benimussa Park.

His finca, named after his cat, let’s him stay true to his rural roots while giving him the freedom for his music productions which range between deep house and darker techno. Past productions include “Syrens” with Federico Grazzini and a remix for Makossa and Megablast. His safeplace in the hills of Santa Agnes is also where DEFEX prepares his DJ sets, well, bordering almost into a live show, tweaking tracks, loops and effects. That’s if his crazy studio cat Muck lets him.

of Ibiza Unique and Nobleza Recordings. Shaped by the influence of the Balearic way of life and the daytime parties, Max Loewe’s productions follow his very own style of deep house. Impulsive and percussive elements, mystical sounds like broad and heavy surfaces paired with psychedelic synthesizers and sequencer lines and characteristic and
atmospheric deep house chords are making his sound truly unique. The sometimes very fairy-tale-sounding and poetic vocals underline the fact that this project does not follow trends, but is original from the beginning to the very last track. The first pieces of the debut album "Change" were released on Nobleza in March. Produced in Ibiza, Alicante
and in Berlin at the Riverside Studios, the recording also includes the beautiful track "Change". "Stereophonic", "This is not a Love Song" and "Lotus Eaters" are more for the classical listeners, featuring emblematic Ibiza beach sounds. www.facebook.com/maxloewemusic www.ibiza-bible.com

IBIZA

DO'S & DONT'S
Don't eat the usual dishes you know from home! Ibiza is an international place where so many cultures meet. Try to eat something you have never tried before and get some new cooking ideas as a souvenir.
Spend at least one whole afternoon on a boat, sailing on the blue waters and watching the island from a different perspective! Whether on a private charter, excursion or even a boat party - being on board is priceless and unforgettable! Put some trainers on and park at the Salinas beach parking, follow the dusty path into the pine woods which will lead you to some small private coves where nudists like to sunbath. At the very end you will find a pirate tower which is the closest geographical point to Formentera from Ibiza. When was the last time you did something for the first time? At the end of Talamanca beach, after Sa Punta restaurant, is one of the most amazing spots for cliff jumping. From 2 to 12 metres everybody can set new goals and let some fears go! Go to Punta Galera to enjoy the amazing sunset, laying on one of those huge flat rocks, where you can also can get “homemade” sea salt from Alex, the friendly cave man who is living from donations from the visitors. 64

Don't bring huge speakers to the calm beaches as many locals go there to get away from the loud environment. Always respect others and you will be respected! Visit the Sant Jordi flea market on Saturdays where locals are selling their stuff at very low prices. You always will find really amazing bargains. The people and especially drummers make a very special atmosphere that you wouldn't have expected so close to Playa d’en Bossa. Try one of Ibizas famous villa parties. Most incredible locations with good vibe people are waiting for you and you are tasting the latest trends from the island. Try to make friends with some season workers! It’s hard to get your name on the lists, but NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE! One of Ibizas best kept secrets is Casita Verde's vegetarian Sunday lunch in the valley of Benimussa. Head there between 14 - 16.00h and enjoy a delicious menu for only 10 euros, learn great things about permaculture and alternative ways of living.
Don't take a plastic bag for everything you buy in the supermarkets, please! They tend to give you bags for every little item, not being aware of how terribly this affects the island and all the marine eco system. Be smart and use one of those cool Ibiza baskets or a cotton bag! Don't only spend time at the same bach club infront of your hotel, as the island has so many amazing spots to offer which often are not advertised but can be found by asking the locals.

DO'S & DONT'S
Don't only dance to electronic music in the big clubs but watch out for some live music such as Flamenco or other performances of bands and singers in places such as Cafe Pereyra in the centre of Ibiza town. Let some wild nights begin with some sexy hip shaking moments to the rhythms of the world - ideally, with a glass of iced Hierbas in your hand! Don't be rude to Spanish people when they don't speak English fluently and maybe have a hard time understanding you because of your dialect. Instead try to learn some words Spanish! You’ll need them one day! Don't carry your most important belongings to the crowded nightclubs like ID and all credit cards, as unfortunately especially in high season there are many pickpockets around.
