BABA TREASURES When we speak of Baba-treasures, we mean any personal item of Baba’s (such as hair or nails, a handkerchief, or sadhra), or any object bearing His signature, or anything touched by Him. All these need to be attended to from the viewpoint of conservation. In another category, so do Baba’s and the mandali’s letters, telegrams and other documents which directly portray Baba’s relationship with His lovers and His attention to the tiniest details of their lives. As well as Baba’s beautiful image in photos and the mandali’s stories that you have recorded on film, videotape and audiotape. All these, we feel, need to be copied and preserved for Baba lovers to come. Since these items can be duplicated, we ask that you consider ensuring that the Trust Archives has a high quality copy for the original, if you feel so prompted). If you are able to arrange this, please have it hand carried (not mailed) to India by a reliable Baba-pilgrim. If you have any difficulty in duplicating the item, do let us know. And please write down and send us any information relevant to the item to shed light on its historic content. As time passes, and as the light of Meher Baba’s Divinity illuminates the world, naturally the memory of His humanity will need to be nurtured. In centuries to come, the things that Meher Baba touched or used or wore, the pictures of Him, the letters He wrote, and other articles bearing the personal imprint of His humanity, will serve as tangible links to help people remember His life as Man more intimately, just as they helped Mehera so much to feel His eternal closeness. To preserve these treasures for as long as possible is one of the duties unfolding before us now, as we prepare for the opening of Act 3, the age of His lovers. So it is essential that this work, begun by the mandali, be on a firm footing, so that after we are no more, it may continue in the same spirit.

During the time Beloved Avatar Meher Baba was in our midst, the work He did, the Darshan Programs He gave, His vitality, His love, His very presence, were overwhelming, much larger than life. So it was impossible to think of a life without Him; no, never without Him, but without His physical form. This time of His being on earth was, as Mani called it, Act 1 in His Divine Game. After Baba dropped His body, all His close mandali found it almost impossible to pick up the threads of life and feel our way out of the darkness of despair and pain. For us women mandali, willing ourselves to be useful, and thinking of what would console Mehera, looking through Baba’s articles helped a great deal. Just to touch His clothes was to feel His closeness, especially for Mehera. She would very willingly be involved in the work, but often we noticed her sitting motionless, a sadra or a coat in her lap, in deep reverie, silent tears running down her cheeks. This phase of the Avatar’s Advent Mani referred to as the start of Act2, when the mandali were pushed onto the stage. After Mehera joined beloved Baba, Mani sometimes used to say, “Act 2 is now nearly over,” and now that Mani too has gone to Him, it seems that the start of Act 3 is closer at hand. More than anyone else, it was Mani who gave the initial push, officially, to the conservation project which is now under way. Keeping Baba’s treasures as lovingly, carefully, and professionally as possible was a top priority for her, so much so that she was moved to voice her wishes on the subject in a letter written June 9th and 10, 1996, two days before she was admitted to the hospital in Poona for her final stay. Writing this letter when she was so ill required great effort on her part, and it turned out to be her last letter as Chairman of the Trust. It was in reply to a request for guidance on the part of an American Baba lover, who found herself responsible for some precious items of Baba’s, that had been in the care of a longstanding Baba lover who had recently died. The following is an excerpt from Mani’s letter: Page 2

Although the letter makes special mention of the USA, the responsibility for providing for the future care of Baba- treasures rests with all those who are entrusted with the privilege of caring for something of His, wherever they may be. So now it is our desire to impress upon all Baba lovers who have Baba-items the enormity of the responsibility you bear for safeguarding His things. This responsibility is both to preserve them with great care while they are in your keeping, and to select heirs for them that will be equally responsible in the future. We would like to think that these treasures will always remain in the hands of people who will both savor the remembrance of Beloved Baba through them, and who will also understand their continuing need for special care. We ask each of you to take the appropriate measures to safeguard whatever item is in your custody. To help you, we have compiled a list of simple steps in a separate write up entitled “Tips for preserving Your Precious Baba Treasures.” Many items may already be old and fragile, and in need of immediate attention. Even things that may not appear fragile are deteriorating, and much can be done to slow the deterioration and prolong their life significantly. As detailed in “Tips,” the primary hazards come from handling, sunlight, artificial light, extremes of temperature and humidity, mold, dust, pests, and acid-exuding papers or containers, and, of course, Father Time As time passes, and as the light of Meher Baba’s Divinity illuminates the world, naturally the memory of His humanity will need to be nurtured. Our small archive shop is steadily acquiring a uniqueness of its own. As keepers of gross plane artifacts our duty as guardians is to secure and protect materials associated with the Advent. In future editions of the archive newsletter we will share with our reader methods and procedures to accomplish this task and to make manifest the extent of our diverse collections. The devotee needs to be informed that a circular, a pamphlet, a poster and all sundry of materials printed during the 1960’s are extremely rare, no longer in print. The few remnants that exist, scattered across the globe, need to be transferred and surrendered to Archives for preservation, for posterity. Our duty as Advent archivist is to seek out the legacy, the word made print. This duty will secure for future generations a glimpse into our age, the age of Avatar Meher Baba Manifesting. There are very few collections of first and second editions, signed and unsigned books, circulars, posters, cards, pamphlets, and advertisements printed during Meher Baba’s lifetime. The challenge of the AMBCSC Archives is to aggressively seek throughout all global regions those precious Meher Baba treasures that are hidden deep within obscurity. Most Advent archive sites keep their collections under controlled environments. Major collections are Sheriar Myrtle Beach, Beloved Archives, Meherabad Archives, Sufism Reoriented. There are smaller collections in several Meher Baba centers: Australia, Britain, and the United States. We are indeed, beads on one string.

Meher Baba collections –print, film, audio assets - that are kept at various museums can accomplish, in archive fashion, preservation. If one location were seriously damaged in the event of the unexpected, natural and unnatural disaster, another site’s collection would be saved. We are most fortunate to have our small archive shop with its impressive collection. To illustrate a backup scenario we do keep our duplicated audio and video materials at two separate sites. Major movie studios use this procedure to protect their vaults. In this archive method if one set is compromised the second set is spared at a second location. The master sets are located at AMBCSC Archive vault and the duplicate collection is kept at a remote location. Mani refers to Meher Baba’s Divine Game as a crescendo of acts. Three acts. From the archival point of view the abundance of rich materials that existed during Act One has become profoundly diminished, seriously depleted. Priceless artifacts are gradually becoming irretrievable absorbed into the folds of Maya, forever lost. It is the intent of these archive newsletters to bring to awareness to our responsibilities as advent archivist to collect, perverse, and protect His treasures.

The Oral History Archive Project Film Review Nothing Fades Jeanne & Darwin Shaw

J

eanne and Darwin Shaw share their stories and experiences with Meher Baba. The title of this DVD “Nothing Fades” refers to Darwin’s comment that his memories of Baba don’t fade. Darwin’s experiences with Baba were so meaningful that after watching this video, you will understand why memories of Baba do not fade. Here are some of Darwin’s comments: When you come to Christ, there is a deep humility that sweeps over you and calms the heart and one begins to become awake. Baba said “Those that are united in love are always in spirit and they know no separation.” During the 3 incredible weeks, Darwin experienced the power of Baba’s love and light that swept his blockage away. When we are open to Baba’s divine current, the mind slows but the forces of the heart also slows. Why? Baba reverses the current. Normally the heart takes in love. The heart center remains open by giving love. Darwin experienced some veils dropping off and saw Baba as infinite light and love. Jeanne Shaw’s stories are also vibrant and engaging. In her first meeting with Baba, she felt a let-down because she was looking for someone big and radiant. Instead Baba was small, wore a hat and an overcoat. Her second meeting was in a private interview and Baba looked very different. Baba seemed to be floating, radiant with long hair, and dressed in white. She saw only Baba and she felt He was her real Father. Of interest to Meher Mount historians is Jeanne’s account of why Baba sat beneath the oak tree. Jeanne was away from Baba and said “I wish Baba would sit underneath that tree.” To her surprise Baba went and sat beneath the oak tree. This experience gave Jeanne the confidence that Baba is always with her. I was told that you get a little drunk in Baba’s love being at a Darwin Shaw talk. I cannot tell you not to drive after watching this video but Darwin’s love for Baba is infectious.ary.

The Treacherous Mind Henry Kashouty

Henry Kashouty, lawyer, judge, trombone player, and determined lover of Baba, shares his insights, struggles, and understanding of a way to find Baba within ourselves. He has been preoccupied with increasing his awareness of God. He diligently examined everything he thought and said. He concluded his thoughts and words were based on selfish motives, so he tried to change his thoughts, words, and deeds. He realized he wanted to find joy in doing the everyday things in life; and found that thinking of Baba gave him more energy and joy. In Henry’s words, “We are here to rededicate ourselves in a practical way to focus our mind on the purpose of creation and make it practical to find hope and joy in the moment.” Here are some of Henry’s insights on life. “All life can teach you, no matter what you accomplish, is you are not free. We must not allow events and thoughts to be our masters. Thoughts are rooted in desire. The purpose of our being here is to make a meaningful new beginning to find that absolute self-grounded happiness does not depend on anyone or anything; but only an increase in awareness that can only come from your ability to gradually focus more and more and more on the total embodiment of love in human form. The mind can never do anything except talk about love, or talk about reality, or talk about fidelity, or talk about quality. It is the heart that gives the feeling of it; and then the heart uses the mind whether eloquent or inarticulate. (cont)


The Treacherous Mind Even an inarticulate mind, controlled by the heart, is eloquent. The heart uses that mind to be creative in this gross world and that love can take form whether you are skilled or unskilled. If that love takes form and you have no skill, your very step is creative; your very glance is creative because the heart is dictating it all. That’s what we are capable of. Here are some of Henry’s insights on the mind: “What must we know about the mind? We must know that which tells us the mind is very treacherous. The mind which is the seat of the ego is hydraheaded. There is no way the mind can do anything to annihilate itself. It is the ego that we constantly must gratify. As we walk in the direction Baba points to, we begin to find illusion is not to be feared because reality is something different. The mind must be tethered to the remembrance of Baba. That is the only safe thing. Experience has taught me that. Experience has taught you that. It is not enough (to know). We must act on it. I become appalled when I haven’t remembered Baba for a period of time. That’s good because then we renew ourselves to our remembrance of Baba.”

The following is an excerpt: “I bow down to the Incarnation of Kalki, who is yet to come in this terribly sinful Kali Age, who is devoid of all religious rituals such as sacrifices, who will be riding a white horse, who will have a destructive sword in his hand, and who will cause the destruction of the multitude of wicked non-believers.”

What is the difference?” Anita replied, “The ant is only conscious of its crawling, I am a little conscious of this room, but you are conscious of the whole universe.” Baba continued, “There is a world of difference between my Infinite Consciousness and your ant-like consciousness. You are all ants before me in my consciousness. You are all crawling on my body! Although I am sitting here in the same room with you, we are really nowhere in space, just within God – neither up nor down, neither here nor there! Avatar Meher Baba Center Southern California The Meeting Hall - Meher Baba’s Chair Lovingly placed in the Avatar Meher Baba Center Southern California’s Meeting Hall is Beloved Meher Baba’s upholstered chair from the Avatar Meher Baba Trust compound, Ahmednagar Center. This precious gift was bestowed by Bhau Kalchuri. It was subsequently transported to the Center by Michael Ramsden. The Dome - Meher Baba’s Chair “When Don finished his reading, Baba said, “I am very happy to be here. I bless you all. I must leave shortly, but you must stay and eat your dinner. Eat well.” Baba and the Mandali left a few minutes later for the hotel. While departing, Baba had Hilda Fuchs now sit in his chair. The following morning, August 1st 1958, Filis Frederick and Adele Wolkin arrived early and spent a few precious moments alone with Baba.” This chair, from the home of Hilda Fuchs is lovingly placed in the Avatar Meher Baba Center Southern California’s Dome. John Grant’s “Practical Spirituality with Meher Baba” Mani said: ‘and where Baba sat, in that chair, he wouldn’t let us touch that chair -- even a part of our dress, by accident, should never touch that chair, not until all the work was finished and we had left Guruprasad.’ ‘The yellow chair. there are 2 chairs, just for your information. the yellow chair is the seclusion chair where Baba sat and did the seclusion work. the other green one is the usual chair where the Mandali who were with him during the night in turns, used to sit’ Eruch: ‘to be even more particular, Baba made us mark on the floor round the chair so that the chair was not shifted at all. you will see the markings still there. I don’t know why Baba was so particular that we should not touch the chair. maybe we might be burdened with his suffering if we touched the chair, and in his compassion he wouldn’t allow even one of the Mandali to touch it.’ Mani: ‘yes, once somebody nearly touched it, missing by an inch, and Baba said, very seriously, “you dont know what you have missed by a little inch.” after that the railing came.

Rare Print Literature

“At the time of reading aloud the Master’s Prayer, I once felt that Baba would want me to recite it instead of reading it out. So I tried to learn it by heart. Also just in case no prayer book was available. I felt confident that I could now do away with the book. When Baba called as usual for the prayer book printed by Warren Healy. Remember him? A beautiful soul. He lived a dedicated life printing so many Baba booklets.”

In far away places, stuffed in books, hidden within cupboards and drawers, stashed away and forgotten rare print artifacts that span the decades from the Warren C Healy Press ~ forgotten materials that need to be located and once collected ~ surrendered to the AMBCSC Archives Department for protection and preservation ~ so that future generations may enjoy his print literatures.

As Baba was looking at the tower of the Meher Retreat Building, Prem Khilnani said to him, “Someday Meherabad will be like Benares.” Baba nodded, “You are right, it will.”

Spreading the Word in this troubling Yuga is accomplished through the diverse media delivery systems: the Internet, radio, film and audio. In a 1999 talk Bhau Kalchuri commented that Baba’s Word needs to be delivered to the auditory canal and once heard the Ancient One begin His inner work. The duty of the AMBCSC Oral History Archive Project is to take our audio and film inventories and distribute these assets to the New Humanity. AMBCSC Archive’s are custodians to an astonishing collection of film and audio materials Especially the film assets we need to give the once-over. These collections include the Sahavas years, the invited AMBCSC guest speakers, the Charles Morton assets, and several other smaller collections. These sets now approach the threshold of one thousand units. The Judy Stephens film, Meherazad and Meherabad, number at the threshold of four hundred units. To preserve and protect a medium that is susceptible to decay and degradation the original masters are kept in our climate controlled archive room. The cassette and reel to reel acquisitioned inventories are expanding to over 1000 audio units. It is by duplication that we preserve our inventories. For a precise duplication a two hours tape requires a two hour session. The duplication will generate to our inventory a working digital copy. From the digital copy the technician can begin the process of restoration. Eventually a fully restored asset is processed into distributable inventory. The Oral History DVD collection is 150 titles and growing. These materials include everything from rough amateur home movie film to professionally engineered Sahavas film. The intent is to preserve. Waste nothing, salvage everything. These media scrolls become the digital footprints of the New Humanity.

In future nCarnation issues we will fully explore in detail the variety of inventories, commentary on collected works, reviews of audio and video materials. What is involved in these processes is a series of calculations that begins with the protection and preservation of the inventories. The following this the managed archival history is presented to the New Humanity. The AMBCSC Archives Oral History Initiative is to take the raw materials and in Oral History fashion make those assets available for the New Humanity, the divine audience. What is an oral history moment?

AVATAR MEHER BABA BIBLIOGRAPHY A bibliography of works by and about Meher Baba in English and other European languages, covering the years 1928 through February 25, 1978. A glance in the index will show numerous titles listed under Meher Baba as author, but it should be noted that Baba stopped writing on January 1, 1927. All of these titles are actually transcriptions, compilations, selections, and excerpts from Baba’s discourses and messages given over the years by means of the alphabet board and later by gestures. The material is best described as having been “written under Baba’s name.” Most of the entries are in English, with a few in other European languages. However, several titles are actually bi- or multilingual and were included if one of the languages was English. The other European languages represented are Czech, French, German, Russian, and Spanish; the Indic languages included, from the multilingual material, are Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. To find listings for these languages, check the index under the name of the language. The date of coverage was extended, from the earliest publication in 1928, through Meher Baba’s birthday, February 25, 1978, which allowed the inclusion of several works appearing in the first quarter of 1978. The bibliography is divided into four sections by format: monographs, serials, sound recordings, and motion pictures. The monograph section (that is, material not published (vii) serially) contains 381 titles, in cluding books, pamphlets, prayers, calendars, diaries, playbills and scripts, commemorative volumes, children’s books, and analytics (chapters on Baba contained in books not about Baba).

THE ARCHIVE MANUAL 1) Materials designated as “Archives” to be secured on these premises. 2) Always accessible to researchers, scholars, and historians of the Ancient One. 3) Users to always either wash hands thoroughly and/or wear cotton gloves before handling. (Wearing of gloves advised for extended handling) The researcher is to be advised of the rarity, the materials value for posterity, before allowed access the collection. 4) To prevent strain on bindings photocopying may be allowed on a case by case basis. Some material would be judged not to be photocopied … in which case - it could be photographed. 5) All material are to be replaced on the shelves to its original location. Materials are to be arranged such that there is no undue pressure. The acid-free cardboard spacers provided should be used to mark the location of removed material, and to provide temporary support for adjacent material when something is removed. 6) There will be no casual access to the AMBCSC Archive Vault. To gain access to the Archives the person must be a trusted member of the community, a scholar, researcher, and/or credentialed companion of the Ancient One. Permitted access is to prevent damage to our collections and to deter any calculated theft of Advent materials. Please refer those interested in AMBCSC Archives to inspect the reading room library as a starting point. The reading room will house the Archive reference book. This book will host Archive materials and informative articles. 7) Metal Cabinets are to be used for everything in “The Archives” (unless a proven superior storage method is found). We do have two fireproof cabinets for our most valuable assets.

THE ARCHIVE MANUAL 8) Every effort will be made to insure the collection remains bug free. The herbal deterrents preferred. Regularly check for any insect activity, careful attentions to our climate controlled office vault to maintain exact temperature and humidity. All archive attendees should be wiling to be informed, and be kept informed of developments in Preservation and Restoration techniques. 9) Temperature and humidity control. The ideal temperature - no higher than 20 or 21 C. - and humidity to be between 30% and 50%. The Archive vault uses a humidifier and an air controlled appliance. 11) At least one person associated with the collection would take on the responsibility of maintaining it at the highest standard possible: this would entail experience, willingness, and attention to standard archival procedure. If the collection cannot be maintained using the above criteria the collected assets of film, print, and audio materials should be migrated over into a designated archival temperature controlled facility ; and a second choice would be to relocate these assets at an Advent support institution for protection. 12) Especially, to continue collecting Advent vintage publications and adding them to the Archives a concentrated effort by all Meher Baba Archive enthusiasts should be encouraged. 13) In every instance that the Board membership changes the new member(s) should be allowed knowledge of these Rules and Conditions.

A Note on Preservation vs. Conservation

The AMBSCS Archives Oral History Project is to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit objects of Advent significance. Over time, all objects will begin to deteriorate for a variety of reasons, such as environmental conditions, use and natural decay. In order to maintain the objects in such condition that they will survive for the enjoyment and education of future generations, it is vital that archives practice proper preservation measures. Knowing how to handle, display and store the artifacts in the archive’s collection can add a significant number of years to the life of the objects. Most history museum collections consist of two basic categories of materials organic and inorganic. Organic artifacts include those made from animal products such as fur, leather, wool, silk, bone, ivory, or feathers and also those made from plant products such as wood, paper, cotton and other natural fibers. Inorganic artifacts are those made from nonliving materials such as metal, stone, ceramics and glass. While in general inorganic materials are more stable and less susceptible to environmental damage than organic materials, it is best to consider all objects fragile and to treat them with great care.
