The Archival DVD Library Over the years our Los Angeles Baba Center has hosted numerous outstanding guests and speakers whose talks on Meher Baba and aspects of life with Him have been captured on video. These talks, many which date back to the 1980s, have been restored to the best possible condition, preserved in archival format, and are now available to the public on DVD. A list of DVDs is published at http://meherbabaarchives.blogspot.com/ The official archive site http://www MeherBabaLibrary.com is presently under construction. Archival work is a vitally important function for documenting and preserving this Avataric advent of Meher Baba. In order to help fund future projects, we ask that you send a donation for each DVD. An entry level suggested donation for each Oral History Dvd Documentary is $35.00. We do encourage larger donations from those whose allowances, by His Grace and Compassion, are generously plump. This will keep the archive collective extremely busy producing future Dvd Documentary Advent flavored releases. A sample from the Archives Blog… Demystifying Death Highlights of a Talk by Filis Frederick By Kendra Crossen Burroughs Adele Wolkin is visiting Myrtle Beach from L.A., as she does every April near her birthday, and on April 10, 2007, she shared with some friends a DVD of a talk given by Filis Frederick at the 1985 L.A. Sahavas. Adele and Filis were close friends, and Baba recognized their soulConnection by calling them collectively “Filadele.” Filis died in 1987. I shouldn’t use that word, though, because in the talk Filis said quite firmly that “no human being has ever died.” Filis thinks of death as a transformational event, “passing through the golden door.” Life is One unbroken continuity, and the “real death,” according to Baba, is the cessation of desires (Discourses, 1987 ed., “Selfishness, p. 13).
The Role of a Database in Recording Baba's Advent Sheriar Foundation Newsletter Excerpts from: Imagine a person just hearing about Baba 100 years from now and wanting to know as much as possible about the Beloved. Much can be done today to assure that the fragrance of Baba's life passes on to future generations. Whether it's the special privilege of listening to Eruch telling Baba stories in Mandali Hall, or that sudden appreciation for Baba's extraordinary compassion and gentleness as revealed in a cable or personal note from Him, there exists today a true abundance of material that must be safeguarded for the future The work of preserving the record of Baba's advent divides into two phases: Collections Management, and Access and Retrieval. During the Collections Management phase original materials are preserved. This includes rehousing, establishing a numbering system, inventorying, providing treatment to stabilize materials, and starting a catalog record. Safety copies of original audio and video recordings, films, photographs and papers are made during this phase. The database is a tool for managing these records and scheduling ongoing maintenance. During the Access and Retrieval phase the database will be used to index these materials. It will provide the underlying structure for access and retrieval by interrelating different kinds of materials. These include Audio, Moving Image (film and video), Still Image (prints, negatives and slides), Paper/ Documents (correspondence, diaries, clippings, manuscripts, etc.) and Museum Objects: clothing (i.e. sadra, handkerchiefs), furniture (i.e. chair Baba sat in), and other items (i.e. alphabet boards, games, etc.).

Meherazad Time Capsule Mandali Hall, Meherazad Filmed By: Charlie Morton The flavor and taste of being in Mandali Hall with Eruch and Mani sharing their experience and stories with Baba are captured in this DVD. Mani tells the following stories: a. Australian, Mary Bennett who Mani thought looked like a mastani, sees Baba in January 1969. b. While in walking Satara, a woman bows down to Baba c. A woman receives a 1,000 rupee note from Baba and uses it to lift her family out of poverty. Eruch tells the following stories: a. An artist staying and sketching scenes of Meherabad while waiting for an opportune time to meet with Baba, obeys Baba’s orders to leave despite not having the opportunity to meet with Baba. b. Story of a follower making the decision between having Baba’s blessing or having Baba in his heart. Rhoda Dubash tells the following stories: a. Rhoda is upset at not being able to participate in the 3 incredible weeks because this was a men’s only Sahavas. Adi and Rhoda are chastised by Baba for not adhering to Baba’s orders they can be with Him for only an hour. Glimpses of Mehera Davana Brown
In this DVD, Davana Brown shares her experience with Mehera. Davana starts the talk by stating “It’s wonderful to be a woman in this lifetime because women can get close of Mehera. Men couldn’t have tea, or sit next to Mehera, or show you how to wear a dupata. Through Mehera, Baba allowed me to have a glimpse of Mehera’s love for Baba” . Davana met Mehera in 1971 on her first trip to India. Her first meeting with Mehera was on the veranda in Meherazad. Devana describes Mehera as lively and effervescent. “ We wanted to be in her presence because so much love radiated from Mehera. There was a stillness surrounding Mehera because she had only one desire … to love Baba more.” This is a very articulate and loving expression of Davana’s personal, first hand experience being with Mehera. Davana witnessed the stillness and tears of Mehera as Mehera described

The Kick and the Kiss Filis Frederick
Filis Frederick expounds on her experience and understanding of what she calls “Kicks and Kisses”. Kicks are the experiences of suffering in life and Kisses are the experiences of joy in life. Filis explains the necessity of suffering: “Suffering is necessary to crack the nut of the ego.” Meher Baba’s answer to why there is misery in the world is because of the satisfaction of individual selfishness. Filis tells stories of her own personal difficulties (kicks) in life and how the disappointments in her youth prepared her for meeting Meher Baba. This talk tackles a serious subject in a kind-hearted way and gives the viewer a larger perspective to life’s Kicks and Kisses

The Beloved Within Charles Haynes The theme of this talk is Baba Living in Our Hearts. Jesus said, “The comforter will not come if I do not leave.” The Christ leaves so that He can come. When the Christ leaves, it is the beginning of His living in our hearts. Everything Baba did while He was living was for His coming into our hearts after He drops His body. This video is about Charles Haynes’ story of how Baba left Myrtle Beach in 1958 to come to live in Charles’ heart. In 1958 Charles said goodbye to Baba. At this meeting, Baba gave Charles a handful of candy and ordered him to eat all the candy by himself … Charles was not to share the candy with anyone. This order lifted the sadness and after Baba left, Charles wondered if Baba remembered him. As the days passed and this thought reached its height of despair, a letter came, written by Mani, that a film of the 1958 Sahavas in Myrtle Beach was shown to the Mandali and Baba pointed out Charles in the film to the Mandali. This taught Charles that Baba knows your heart. During Baba’s seclusions, Baba would push people to find Baba in their heart, by saying “Do your best and I will be there to help you.” So Charles tried to find Baba in his heart. In the 1962 East-West Gathering, Charles wondered if the Baba he was going to meet again was the same Baba that was in his heart. Baba in Charles’ heart had been his companion since 1958. Charles was assured after seeing Baba’s hand while waiting in line, that the physical Baba was the same as his Baba companion in his heart. One event at Guruprasad convinced Charles that Baba truly lives in our hearts. Charles asked Eruch permission to come to Guruprasad the following day early, before the buses arrived. Eruch said you have to ask Baba, so Eruch pushed Charles to Baba. Baba said yes, and gave Charles a kiss. The next morning, Charles walked to Guruprasad early and when he peeked through the curtain he saw Baba alone, already waiting for the people to arrive. Rano asked Charles to say good morning to Baba, and when Charles walked up to Baba and looked into His eyes, Charles knew that Baba Is and Baba was complete. Baba wanted Charles to know that He is the nameless One that lives in our hearts. Kanji Miyao Review
On Perfection Charles Haynes The theme of this talk is Spiritual Growth. Charles shares his thoughts with us about Spiritual Growth and Remembrance. Charles was 8 years old when he first met Baba in 1958 in the Lagoon Cabin. The first thing Baba gestured/said to Charles was “You have grown”. The idea of growing spiritually is important … but how? Baba told Charles to hold on His daaman, not with one hand, but with both hands. Baba said “Love has meaning”, “Obedience has more meaning”, and “Holding on to my daaman has most meaning”. If we hold on to Baba, we will automatically grow and change. The elimination of the ego is Baba’s job, and not our job. Our job is to remember Baba with love. Remembrance is growth. Remembrance is waking Baba up. Remembrance is also a two way street … it begins the dialog between the lover and the Beloved, and is the beginning of our labor. A happy life is knowing that whatever happens in life, it is part of your growth. You cannot remember Baba without loving and serving others. Remembrance brings awareness which also includes more pain, but as a Buddhist teacher said, there is a difference between painful pain and joyful pain. Our job is to grow spiritually and prepare for Baba’s next incarnation so that when we meet Him again, Baba will say to us, “You have grown!”

How I Came To Baba Bernice Ivory This is the story of Bernice Ivory (an “old” soul according to Baba) coming to Baba. Bernice met Baba in 1956 but her story begins much before this event. It was actually Bernice’s sister Beryl who was the spiritual seeker in the family. Beryl would go from one spiritual group to another, and got Bernice into meditation. Beryl was constantly looking for something more, but Bernice was satisfied with her meditation. In 1952, Bernice’s Father obtained tickets from a friend to hear a talk by Norina Machabelli. Bernice’s Father got sick and of course it was Beryl that used the ticket and went to hear Norina. After the talk, Beryl was excited about meeting a spiritual master and asked Bernice if she would like to go with her to Myrtle Beach to meet Him. Bernice wasn’t like Beryl and declined to go, but Bernice noticed a difference in Beryl after she returned from Myrtle Beach. One day Beryl gave Bernice a picture of Baba. When Bernice looked at the picture, her heart leapt out and this scared Bernice, so she hid Baba’s picture in her husband’s dresser drawer. Later, Bernice attempted to read the Discourse on Love, but all she got was a headache, after reading a few paragraphs. Bernice was disappointed in herself for not being able to read the Discourse and wondered what was wrong with her? When Bernice met Beryl again, Bernice heard a voice in her head saying “Don’t read the Discourse until you are ready.” This is just the beginning of how Baba captured Bernice’s heart. Bernice tells her story in an open and personal way, with humor, e.g., when she tells of jumping into bed and covering herself with bed sheets as a result of a Baba spiritual experience. For the Sake of Love Havovi Dadachangi The title for this talk was inspired by one of Baba’s telegrams urging His lovers to love Him more and more. Havovi Dadachangi, a long time lover of Baba, shares her story with us. Her Baba story starts in 1953 with her engagement to Hoshang Dadachangi. Havovi is Zoroastrian and she was named after Zoroaster’s wife, Havovi. Havovi did not know anything about Baba and the thought of God in human form was foreign to her. Havovi was not impressed before or after her meeting with Baba although Baba gave the sign of perfection after meeting her. She found reasons not to like Baba and would agree with people who openly slandered Baba. For example, Baba permitted smoking and her religion did not permit smoking (using sacred fire at the end of your lips is sacrilegious); Baba permitted marriage between caste and her religion did not. For seven years, Havovi would see Baba, not for love, but to keep harmony with her husband and relatives; and to keep an eye on her husband. When she met Baba lovers who described meeting Baba in dreams, she thought these people crazy. Havovi loved the women mandali, but did not understand their love and devotion to Baba. Baba turned the key after seven years. There was no “Eureka” moment when Havovi suddenly loved Baba, but in the 1960s when she and her relatives went to Guruprasad regularly on the weekends to see Baba, her objections to Baba died and was replaced with love. Being Brave Mehera Irani
Filmed by Fred Stankus Mehera talks on her porch about her garden and about animals in this video tape. The video starts with a panning of the garden at Meherazad adjacent to the women’s porch. After a short talk about the garden, Mehera spends most of the video talking about animals. Topics are: 1. Poor soil at Meherazad 2. Baba gives Mehera a baby parrot. 3. Nepalese mina bird learns to say “Baba Darling” 4. Rabbits 5. Amusing story of Baba with animals in upper Meherabad. Baba would feed bread to a cow and a dog. The dog, being jealous, would try to chase the cow away. Instead of running away, the cow would run in circles with the dog not far behind. After a while, you could not determine who was chasing who. 6. Baba saves a puppy dog from falling into a steep ravine. 7. Snake story Mehera’s Father kills tigers for villagers

Our Duty To The Beloved Bhau Kalchuri Comment: At 42:47 into the video, there is some editing done on the video, and the audio went away. I had to switch to the other channel to listen to the audio. We need to put the audio on both channels. A vibrant and passionate Bhau focuses on the topic “Our Duty to the Beloved”. In this talk Bhau identifies our duties as a Baba lover: 1.

Stick to one master. Do not go to other masters once you have accepted Baba. Strive to become closer and closer with the master. a. Story of the scorpion bite and the disciple seeking help from Baba and the 5 perfect masters. b. Story of a pilgrim going from city to city seeking darshan from saints. Remain focused on Baba. a. Story of disciples going to a fair with a glass of milk with the condition they do not spill a drop of milk. b. Story of disciples given a day of enjoyment with no restrictions and getting intoxicated. Follow Baba’s wish. a. Story of Bhau feeling guilty of receiving a banana from Baba when the other disciples were only getting dal and rice. b. Story of Kaka giving orders to Aloba to walk the dogs and in return Aloba teaching Kaka English (even though Kaka know more than Aloba). c. Story of Kaka’s heart attack and Kaka repeatedly slapping Bhau’s head. Our duty is to please Baba. We are not to care about the opinions of the world but to care about pleasing Baba. a. Story of Baba’s order to Bhau to eat well. For each duty, Bhau has one or more stories related to the theme. The story I enjoyed the most was the one about pleasing Baba. In 1957, Bhau was told to go to Nariman’s house and to eat well. Meal time was with a group of people, and every time Bhau started to eat, Baba would make a comment about Bhau’s eating habits, Bhau’s eating manners, and in general making eating a miserable activity for Bhau. Bhau felt self-conscious with people staring at him and as a consequence, Bhau did not eat well. This went on for over a month. Baba, sensing Bhau’s frustration, offered Bhau some food, and an angry Bhau told Baba that he was not hungry. Baba reminded Bhau of the order to eat well, and Bhau’s disobedience to this order caused Baba much pain. Bhau realized his mistake and was given another chance at Guruprasad. At Guruprasad, with a large gathering eating together, again Baba poked fun at Bhau’s eating. This time Bhau continued eating. Baba continued His poking and Bhau continued eating. To an outsider, it would seem that Bhau disregarded Baba’s comments and not worthy of being Mandali. After everyone left, Baba told Bhau that he (Bhau) made Baba very happy!

The Treacherous Mind Henry Kashouty
Henry Kashouty, lawyer, judge, trombone player, and determined lover of Baba, shares his insights, struggles, and understanding of a way to find Baba within ourselves. He has been preoccupied with increasing his awareness of God. He diligently examined everything he thought and said. He concluded his thoughts and words were based on selfish motives, so he tried to change his thoughts, words, and deeds. He realized he wanted to find joy in doing the everyday things in life; and found that thinking of Baba gave him more energy and joy. In Henry’s words, “We are here to rededicate ourselves in a practical way to focus our mind on the purpose of creation and make it practical to find hope and joy in the moment.” Here are some of Henry’s insights on life. “All life can teach you, no matter what you accomplish, is you are not free. We must not allow events and thoughts to be our masters. Thoughts are rooted in desire. The purpose of our being here is to make a meaningful new beginning to find that absolute self-grounded happiness does not depend on anyone or anything; but only an increase in awareness that can only come from your ability to gradually focus more and more and more on the total embodiment of love in human form. The mind can never do anything except talk about love, or talk about reality, or talk about fidelity, or talk about quality. It is the heart that gives the feeling of it; and then the heart uses the mind whether eloquent or inarticulate. Even an inarticulate mind, controlled by the heart, is eloquent. The heart uses that mind to be creative in this gross world and that love can take form whether you are skilled or unskilled. Nothing Fades Jeanne and Darwin Shaw Jeanne and Darwin Shaw share their stories and experiences with Meher Baba. The title of this DVD “Nothing Fades” refers to Darwin’s comment that his memories of Baba don’t fade. Darwin’s experiences with Baba were so meaningful that after watching this video, you will understand why memories of Baba do not fade. Here are some of Darwin’s comments: When you come to Christ, there is a deep humility that sweeps over you and calms the heart and one begins to become awake. Baba said “Those that are united in love are always in spirit and they know no separation.” During the 3 incredible weeks, Darwin experienced the power of Baba’s love and light that swept his blockage away. When we are open to Baba’s divine current, the mind slows but the forces of the heart also slows. Why? Baba reverses the current. Normally the heart takes in love. The heart center remains open by giving love. Darwin experienced some veils dropping off and saw Baba as infinite light and love. Jeanne Shaw’s stories are also vibrant and engaging. In her first meeting with Baba, she felt a let-down because she was looking for someone big and radiant. Instead Baba was small, wore a hat and an overcoat. Her second meeting was in a private interview and Baba looked very different. Baba seemed to be floating, radiant with long hair, and dressed in white. She saw only Baba and she felt He was her real Father. Of interest to Meher Mount historians is Jeanne’s account of why Baba sat beneath the oak tree. Jeanne was away from Baba and said “I wish Baba would sit underneath that tree.” To her surprise Baba went and sat beneath the oak tree. This experience gave Jeanne the confidence that Baba is always with her. I was told that you get a little drunk in Baba’s love being at a Darwin Shaw talk. Enchantments of Worry Filis Frederick
Filis takes on the topic of worry in this DVD. She shares her experience of worrying instigated by Baba’s disapproving comment of “Why didn’t Filis show the people the way back to the center?” (To put this statement into context, the year was 1952 and Baba was taking a tour of the Meher Baba Universal Center in Myrtle Beach. Filis was invited by Baba to be with Him at the center.) Filis’ mind started going round and round Baba told Filis to stop worrying several times but she couldn’t. Finally, Baba held her hand and the worrying stopped. Baba says worry gets to be a habit, and Filis suggests several methods which helps to reduce worry: a. You worry about the past or the future, so shrink the time span to the now. b. Perform a physical activity to break the habit and tension c. Surrender to Baba. Lay your burden at His feet and let Baba do the worrying. d. Don’t hang out with worriers. An informative Q&A session occurs at the end of Filis’ talk.

Meher Baba’s 1956 World Tour Leatrice Johnston
In 1956 Meher Baba visited Europe, United States, and Australia. In the U.S., Baba visited New York, Myrtle Beach, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Leatrice Johnston traveled with Baba to these cities in the United States. In this DVD, Leatrice gives an account of the events/activities that occurred and of her own personal experience of growth and understanding during this period. A few of the highlights of Leatrice’s personal spiritual growth that occurred during the U.S. is explained below: When Baba playfully pretended to give cookies to one person but instead gave the cookies to another person, Leatrice inwardly felt this meant to always be ready, in the present, to receive His love; Do not hold on to the past. The “inner contact” with Baba is the real work and Leatrice’s feelings for Baba deepened in Myrtle Beach. “Our days would start with a pat from Baba. We were waiting for Baba and this showed how we can be in inner contact while doing other activity.” Leatrice had the experience of Baba bursting within and the synchronicity of firecrackers bursting in air during the evening of July 4 was not lost upon her. During the airplane ride from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Leatrice felt her love for Baba was dry and empty. Leatrice deliberately made an effort to contact Baba on the airplane and when Baba looked at her, Leatrice was filled full of love. This experience taught her that Baba is our security. Story of how Mohammed drew a family close to him. Mohammed helps a woman stranger by carrying her luggage/goods. During this activity the woman disparages a man named Mohammed, not knowing He is the one helping her. Sarisacoti enters the spiritual path by following the advice of his slave: turn away from the world; keep the company of God; eat and sleep in moderation so that it does not become a barrier between you and God.

While in a losing battle, Mohammed throws sand at the enemy army. The sand turns into a sandstorm and destroys the enemy. Although in seclusion, Baba shows compassion to an old woman who wants his darshan. A baby bird that was rescued a few months earlier, flies to Baba, lays its head on Baba’s feet, and dies. Lord Meher Bhau Kalchuri
Bhau Kalchuri, the author of Lord Meher (biography of Avatar Meher Baba), tells us his journey of becoming an author, playwright, and ghazal poet. The journey starts in 1958 when Baba asked Bhau to maintain a diary. Bhau protested that he did not have the time and Baba said not to worry. Over the years, Bhau wrote speeches for other mandali and was encouraged by Baba to write. Baba asked Bhau to try to write a play in Hindi about BabaBaba, to write 100 songs, and to translate the Everything and the Nothing from English to Hindi with the caveat to make it interesting. From this caveat, Bhau wrote God Alone Exist, as a prayer. Baba also taught Bhau the art of ghazal writing. Baba said Bhau’s works were better than Kabir’s. In October 1968, Baba gave instructions to write a biography and He wanted the life of the five perfect masters included in this book. After Baba dropped the body in January 1969, Bhau collected material for the biography. From September 1971 to December 1972, Bhau wrote the Nothing and the Everything, Lord Meher, and other books. Bhau worked 15-18 hours a day, writing like a machine, and not thinking about what he was writing. Bhau’s talk jumps from one period of time to another period of time, so it is hard to get a chronological sense of the events described in this video. What comes through loud and clear, in this video, is Bhau’s passion and joy talking about his Beloved.

The White Horse Avatar Marguerite Poley Marguerite Poley met Meher Baba on two different occasions …1956 in Los Angeles and 1958 in Myrtle Beach. In this DVD, as she approaches 80 years of age, she shares her life, before and after meeting Baba. Marguerite was born in Zurich Switzerland into a well-to-do family. She was educated in a convent and was fascinated with the enigma of God. Her Father’s early death caused a steep decline in the family’s fortune and resulted in immigrating to Ohio in 1935 to get a new start in life. Marguerite joined a convent, but a voice saying “Why do this again?” caused her to pursue a different path. Her Father loved horses and this passion was passed on to Marguerite. Her skill riding horses allowed her to join a circus and she traveled all over the United States and Canada, performing bareback riding stunts. A serious accident, when a horse fell on her injuring her back, cut short her circus career. During the war years, Marguerite was able to find work in an aircraft manufacturing plant. However in 1944, another serious accident occurred ripping off her scalp. Marguerite was in and out of hospitals for two years as a result of the accident. During this time, she had a dream of being shackled in a torture chamber and as she accepted her fate as God’s will, a woman came to release her. Later, she identified this woman as Mehera. The White Horse Avatar Continued
After Marguerite’s second serious accident, she had time to follow the different spiritual thoughts of that era. Marguerite went to Meher Mount with a friend and met Jean Adriel who lived there. Jean talked about Meher Baba and asked if they would like to buy a book Jean had just written called the “Avatar”. Marguerite was not impressed enough to buy the book but her friend bought the book. A few weeks later, Marguerite’s friend suggested she read the “Avatar”, and Marguerite borrowed the book. After reading the book, Marguerite recognized Baba as God. Marguerite first saw Baba in 1956 at the airport walking majestically. In her first embrace with Baba, Marguerite said she just dissolved and could not feel Baba’s body. Marguerite also talks about the time she had doubts about Baba, her friendship with Jean Adriel, and the adventurous trip to Myrtle Beach with Dana Fields to see Baba. Marguerite’s faith and remembrance of Baba was such that Baba was her companion in life.

The Night Watchman Rama Rao
Disclaimer: Rama Rao’s English is very hard to understand due to regional accent. Incomplete filming causes some stories to be abruptly dropped. The following are a few of the stories shared by Rama Rao: * A childless couple who had previously met Baba, send a telegram to Baba notifying Baba of the wife’s imminent death. As is the custom, the woman is placed on the ground beside the bed in preparation for her death. The telegram reply from Baba is “Surrendering to God’s unbounded mercy is the best cure”. The woman survived and subsequently had children. * Due to an accident to his leg, a Baba lover is hospitalized. The husband and wife are devout Baba lovers and the wife prays daily to Meher Baba; however the pain in the husband’s leg increases. The husband curses Baba daily for not relieving him of his pain. The wife threatens the husband to write a letter to Baba of his verbal abuses if he does not stop. The pain is not relieved so the husband continues to blame Baba. The wife writes a letter to Baba about her husbands verbal abuses of Baba. In reply, Baba writes “The abuse from my lovers is far sweeter than hypocritical presents from so called saints.” * Rama Rao tells how he came to Baba. (This story is incomplete.)
