It’s Wiggle Waggle Walk Time! Let’s go! The 17th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk parades back to Brookside Park on Sunday, September 27. Join thousands of animal lovers and their four-legged friends for a fun-filled community dog walk, fundraiser and Pet Expo. The Wiggle Waggle Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year. Our goal is to raise $400,000 to help provide shelter, food and veterinary care for nearly 12,000 animals cared for every year at the Pasadena Humane Society. Funds raised from the Wiggle Waggle Walk will benefit all the animals that come through our open doors, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, wildlife and more. “The Walk is our biggest fundraiser of the year and so much fun for everyone,” says Carol Kirby, Chairman of the PHS Board of Directors. “It’s inspirational to see thousands of people and over a thou-
sand dogs all gathered together to help the animals in our community.” Arrive at 8 a.m. to register, then let the fun begin with the Walk at 9 a.m. (continued on back page)
compassion and care for all animals
LEADER OF THE PACK When you contact the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, you have access to multiple animal care programs, community services, and the expertise of our staff. Because we strive to keep pets in their homes, our staff feels no issue is too large or too small. Changes in your pet’s daily routine may cause your well-behaved pet to show some very atypical conduct. For example, many families with school-age children find that the backto-school blues is also affecting their pets. PHS can help you figure out creative ways to keep your pet happy and engaged. Dogs can take training classes or learn new tricks; cats will benefit from playtimes and interactive toys; rabbits will thrive with enrichment and attention. Fetch more great ideas by contacting our Behavior Helpline at 626.792.7151 ext. 155. Need another way to keep your dog busy this fall? Join us at Brookside Park on Sunday, September 27th for the 17th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk. Our signature event, the Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Animals, raises much needed funds for our animal care programs. Although dogs (and people) do the walking, this event supports all of the animals that need our care. We hope to raise $400,000 in 2015. The walk is also a “friend-raiser” for PHS, a time when the ever-expanding community of animal lovers comes together to support and promote the welfare of all animals. After the Walk, stay for the Pet Expo, filled with food trucks, petrelated booths, K-9 demonstrations, and more! Our Mobile Unit will be there too with many shelter animals that need caring homes. Learn how you can join the fun and support the animals at www.wigglewagglewalk.org. Everything PHS does depends on teamwork. From the success of the Walk, the completion of the Neely Cat Center, to our work with our service cities, PHS relies on a cadre of animal lovers. You are an essential part of the team—we could not accomplish what we do without you. Thanks for all your support! I hope to see you at Brookside Park on Sunday, September 27! For the animals,

COMMUNITY HEROES
Leanne Lowden Mothershead A chance encounter with the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA’s Mobile Unit in 2011 inspired Leanne Lowden Mothershead to get involved and help the animals in her community. As Regional Coordinator for Girls on the Run, a not-for-profit fitness and empowerment program for 8 to 13 yearold girls, Leanne decided to surprise the girls with a visit from the PHS Mobile Unit, which led to the beginning of a new tradition. The girls now host an annual bake sale to raise money for PHS that has brought in approximately $8,800 to date! But Leanne didn’t stop there. She wanted to do more and decided to help fundraise for the Wiggle Waggle Walk. “I’ve had many experiences with the shelter and believe in the goals and values,” she said. “I am a firm believer in giving back to the community.” As captain of the “Keep Calm and Wag On” team, she and its members raised $9,000 for the Walk in 2014 and set a goal of raising $12,000 in 2015. Leanne’s dog, a PHS alum named Mickey, will be joining them for this year’s walk where he will be the Top Dog and Grand Marshal.
She credits “being brave enough to ask” as the key to her successful fundraising efforts. “I recruit people to help me, such as my previous employer who donated a gift certificate for me to use to attract more donors,” she said. “For just a $10 donation you’re entered into an opportunity drawing to win the gift certificate.” Leanne also makes business cards to give to potential team members or donors, which includes a picture of Mickey and the link to her fundraising page. Along with raising funds, she educates people about the programs and services of PHS, such as low-cost spay/ neuter and vaccinations, and affordable behavior and training classes. Leanne Lowden Mothershead is our community hero because of her efforts to empower young girls to be confident and healthy while also working to raise funds to support the animals in her community.

Join the PHS Legacy Society Making provisions for PHS in your estate plans? Consider the following questions and discuss them with your estate planning attorney to help you get started: 1. Do I need to update my will? 2. Should I consider a revocable trust? 3. How much would my spouse and children receive if I passed away today? 4. Is a living will or medical power of attorney necessary? 5. Do the beneficiaries of my retirement plan and life insurance align with my estate plan?

WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK SAFETY Wiggle Waggle Walk Dog Safety Thousands of dogs and their owners will take part in the 17th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk on Sunday, September 27, 2015. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA wants you and your fourlegged friends to have a safe and fun day. Here are some tips to help make your Wiggle Waggle Walk experience a great one.
Leash Manners We recommend you walk your dog on a flat collar, harness or head halter. If your dog pulls on leash, pick up an Easy Walk Harness or Gentle Leader in our Shelter Shop. Get your dog used to any new walking gear well before the Walk. Carry treats to reward your dog for good on-leash behavior.
Dog Greeting Before letting your dog meet another dog, communicate with the other owner. Keep dog-to-dog meetings short and sweet. Try walking your dog parallel to the other dog and let them sniff each other’s hinds. If either dog seems uncomfortable, move on. Never force your dog to meet another dog if they look uncomfortable.
People Meeting With so many people around, it’s important for dogs to have good people greeting manners. Ask your dog for a “sit” when a new person approaches. Have the newcomer pet them on their chest versus over top of the head.
