Highlighting the Brightest Students of Pasadena ISD High Schools and their Mentors

May 2, 2024

Welcome to the Annual Shining Stars Gala

Welcome to the Pasadena Education Foundation Annual Shining Stars Gala,

It is with great pride that the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation comes together to sponsor the Shining Stars Gala. This Gala is a unique opportunity for the foundation to recognize the top ten students from each high school in Pasadena and the educators who’ve played a critical role in nurturing their minds and serve as a catalyst for their success.

Tonight, you will be able to witness the brightest minds of tomorrow walk across this stage and be honored. My hope is that some day they will return to their community and be a part of this great school district and city.

This magnificent event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Please take the time to read the list of sponsors in the program and know how important the students are to the future of Pasadena. Our Platinum sponsors are; Chevron Pasadena Refinery, Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP and Education Foundation of Harris County.

A special recognition to LyondellBasell and Compudopt for their generous donation of computers for our top ten graduates from each school.

Thank you, Shining Stars, Tish Gale Eubanks Board President, Pasadena ISD Education Foundation

Kevin Erickson

J. Frank Dobie High School Band, 9th-12th Grade

Throughout my high school career, I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with some of the very best educators at Dobie High School. However, no single person has had more of an impact on me and the way I view the world than Mr. Kevin Erickson. His keen intellect, relentless pursuit of detail, and unwavering enthusiasm for the Fine Arts have heavily influenced my perspective of the world. He has played an extraordinarily influential role in my development, serving not only to teach me the virtues of musicianship, but also the values of curiosity, leadership, empathy, collaboration, and competition.

Gilbert DeLeon

Mr. DeLeon exemplifies everything you could ever ask for in a teacher and more. He’s extremely knowledgeable, effective at teaching complex topics, and also a New York Times Games champion! However, what sets him apart from others is the learning environment that he’s created and his ability to connect with students. With Mr. DeLeon, mistakes are painful stings, not death sentences, which motivates students to reflect and do better. Through all of my stress-induced mania and eccentric moments, Mr. DeLeon always had my back, and I’m eternally grateful to have been his student. Thank you, Mr. DeLeon!

Choosing Ms. Luong as my Distinguished Educator was an easy decision given her profound impact on my academic journey during my little time as her student. Despite the early morning start of our AP Statistics class, Ms. Luong’s infectious energy and bubbly personality never failed to brighten my day. Beyond her role as a teacher, Ms. Luong has become a source of inspiration for me through her guidance and encouragement, which led me to develop an appreciation for the subject and a newfound fascination with Statistics.

Dianne Berreth

J. Frank Dobie High School 10th and 11th Grade, Pre-AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry

Mrs. Berreth was a great teacher not because she taught me how to do a titration or solve equilibrium problems, but because she taught me how to appreciate the value of learning and the obtainment of new knowledge. Mrs. Berreth doesn’t want her students to simply score high on exams, she wants her students to gain something new from her teaching and be able to apply it in their future. Mrs. Berreth consistently puts in the work and passion to be a great educator, staying after school nearly every day to give her students the attention they need. I am grateful to have such an influential role model who will continue to have an impact on me years beyond high school.

Lisa Barrett

J. Frank Dobie High School 9th and 10th Grade, Latin: Mythology

Every day as I entered her classroom, Mrs. Barrett’s cynical jokes could be heard in contrast to her rosy cheeks and infectious laugh. The irony of this made her a character and caused us to smile through her genuine personality alone. It was through her sincere nature that made a significant impact on me. For when I was going through one of the darkest times in my life, she never once showed judgement, only compassion and empathy. It is for these traits that I look up to her as a human being. Her undeniable integrity has instilled in me the will to help others, and I will forever thank her for guiding the little lost girl I once was.

Dr. Shaukat’s dedication and resilience have always inspired me. As an educator, she always provides me with a safe and fun space for learning. I developed an immense respect for Dr. Shaukat because of the hardships she faced both personally and professionally. It was through Ms. Badon’s encouragement and ego boosts that I was me to persevere. She taught me to take pride and confidence in myself but to also seek help when necessary. She was the roof over my head when I needed it the most. Without her, there wouldn’t have been a cheerful and ambitious Ngoc. She taught me what it takes to create a theatrical production in the Theatre Arts 1 course the following year. Yet, it did not seem possible that it could be done in a short amount of time. However, when Senior day arrived, I understood, she was different from the other teachers. He’s overall the best teacher I’ve ever had.

Mr. Arceneaux has been the best teacher I could have throughout high school every time I needed to talk to someone he was there for me. He helped me overcome many obstacles in life and always guided me through the right path to succeed. He showed me what the real world is really about and what I need to do to not stumble and continue with my goals in life. He brightens the day with his jokes and always makes his classroom feel safe for everyone. Even though he might look mean, he has a sweet heart and that’s why many students look up to him. Thank you for everything, Mr. Arceneaux.

At this time, I am unsure of what career I want to pursue. I just know that I want to help people in the best way that I can. I have contemplated becoming a therapist or something that deals with the human mind. I want to be someone that people see as a “safe place” to confide in. When someone is struggling to find their way out in a dark tunnel, I want to hold a flashlight in one hand and their hand in my other as I help them navigate their way out.

Jon Pierre Arceneaux

Pasadena High School 10th Grade, English 2

During my sophomore year, Mr. Arceneaux’s class was the one class that I would always look forward to. Mr. Arceneaux has a way of teaching that keeps his students intrigued and wanting to know more. He throws in unbelievable stories into his teaching that if you were not paying attention, you would miss. Aside from his teaching and hilarious personality, I have never seen a teacher who cares so much about his students as Mr. Arceneaux does. I remember this one specific time that I was unhappy with a grade I received on my essay. I talked to Mr. Arceneaux expecting to get a “you get what you get” response, but instead I received excellent feedback where he walked me through what I could do to improve my essay. From Mr. Arceneaux’s class, I have taken what I have learned and applied it in my current essays. I cannot thank Mr. Arceneaux enough for what an outstanding teacher he is.

Mr. Arceneaux has been one of the most influential teachers I have met in my time in school. He was the first teacher to really open my eyes on how school really works after high school. He didn’t give the generic speeches of college after high school and gave us real life stories. I was always encouraged to do my best and told the reality of things if I started to get off track on my work. South Houston High School 11th Grade, AP Physics C

I chose Mr. Wheeler as my distinguished educator because he exposed me to a new perspective on how to look at the world. Before taking physics, I never gave much thought to the intricacies of the world, however, when I started his class I finally understood how the world works. Mr. Wheeler taught me why people’s size determines the overall force, because of their mass and acceleration of the punches, why it hurts worse to be stepped on by a heel more than a boot, because of the force applied to a smaller surface area, and how fighters apply torque to their body for greater strikes. Additionally, he always told us stories of his life abroad, in the military, teaching, and in school, For me, Mr. Wheeler was more than just a teacher, he was sometimes like an elder brother, and he taught me so many lessons both in academics and in life.

Pasadena Memorial High School 10th Grade, Painting/Art

Kind and caring, Mrs. Nguyen is an amazing teacher who constantly looks after and motivates her students. I started out being hesitant to use colors and with my ability as a painter, but by the end of the year, Mrs. Nguyen had taught me to not only love the paintings I created but also have confidence in what I can do. Even though our time together was short, her influence has stayed with me throughout my high school journey. Having just returned from the pandemic and knowing no one in the class, the conversations that we had that year, however short, remain significant in my memories. When faced with the choice of whether or not to continue with art, the time spent with Mrs. Nguyen was one of the reasons that pushed me to see what else I am capable of creating. Turns out, the answer was a lot! These past two years of art were filled with new, fun, and amazing memories that I deeply cherished. So, thank you, Mrs. Nguyen, for giving me an unforgettable high school experience, for being the awesome teacher that you are, and for your continuous sacrifice in giving your all to your students!

Mr. Hentz is one of the most kind and supportive teachers I’ve ever had. Despite lacking an interest in social studies throughout most of my academic career, his class quickly became one of my favorites junior year, which I thoroughly enjoyed (except when we had timed writes or a socratic seminar). In the midst of the chaos that surrounded junior year, Mr. Hentz ensured that his class would provide us with the least stress while maintaining the standards that an AP class calls for and promoting our success on the AP exam. I am grateful for the life lessons I learned from Mr. Hentz and the kindness and understanding that he supplied, which I will never forget.

His unhesitant dedication and genuine commitment to our growth within the classroom extends far beyond the academic environment as he created a nurturing environment that encouraged his students to grow not only as artists, but as kind individuals. Sam Rayburn Early College High School 10th Grade, Geometry

Mr. Garcia’s geometry class was filled with constant laughter. Stepping into his class always lifted your mood. The environment he created was so joyous and happy. I remember our entire class trying to get through the lesson as quickly as possible so we could have more time to talk to him. He also made the most unappealing subject of “shape math” easy and fun to learn. He was always someone you could tell anything, and we bonded over laughter and giggles. It has truly been so long since I have talked with Mr. Dlouhy, but something I will not forget is the passion I found in his class. It was through his assignments that I found prominence in my voice. He assigned multiple short essays that involved us to critically think about different political ideas and though I was not too interested in the politics, I found myself entangled in the concept of writing as a form of art. Sarah Carnes

Sam Rayburn High School 12th Grade, College Counselor

I met Mrs. Carnes not too long ago, however, the presence and impact she has made is truly life changing. As my school’s college now coordinator, she ensures senior’s college applications, scholarship searching process, and FAFSA application run smoothly. She has guided me and my peers through this entire process, and I believe that without her I would not have achieved all the accomplishments I was able to. I have her to thank for pushing me to do what I thought was impossible, and for helping me receive a full ride to Boston College.

The style that he uses is one that felt unique compared to anyone that has taught me that subject before. Even to this day, his form of teaching is of the pinnacle that I strive to achieve in terms of knowing my passions and knowledge in my respective field. Michael Oseguera

South Houston High School 12th Grade, Computer Science

I originally took computer science to boost my GPA. The course challenged me and brought a new creative side to me. At times, it felt draining due to reaching the point where most of the classes I was taking were not pushing me enough to do better. Throughout these years, Mr. Oseguera has continued to challenge me and is not willing to accept not putting my all into my work as sufficient. He has pushed me to become a better programmer, and for that, I am thankful. He has made a future in computer science seem possible.

Dean Rhonda Bell

South Houston Early College 9th-12th Grade, Life lessons for the future

I chose Mrs. Bell to be my shining star educator because she has been one of the most supportive and motivating forces driving me to be successful. Throughout my time here at South Houston, Mrs. Bell gave me opportunities from speaking at events to being able to represent Soho at different schools, she put me on the map and I owe so much to her. She has always been kind, caring, and understanding to everything that I cared for. She may be our Early College Dean, but she will always be my GOAT.

Despite my initial nervousness about his class, it quickly became my favorite, largely due to Mr. Olivares’ engaging teaching style that resonated with me. As an A+ student, it’s common for accomplishments to be overlooked, but Mr. Olivares always recognized and celebrated my efforts, making me feel valued. His consistent encouragement and pride in my work not only boosted my confidence but also deepened my interest in the subject. Mr. Olivares’ dedication to his students’ success has had a lasting impact on my academic journey, inspiring me to always strive for excellence.

Brieanne Stewart

South Houston High School 10th Grade, English II

Ms. Stewart was the first teacher who felt more like a friend than an educator because of the all the advice she gave me throughout my sophomore year. I believe her advice got through to me because she would open up about personal issues. Now that I am in my last year of high school, I have had to take some of the biggest decisions in my life thus far, and I always take her advice into consideration. I do not think that I will ever be able to express my gratitude towards her and how she changed my life.

Roberto Benitez

Rick Schneider Middle School 6th Grade, Science

Yes, you will have to learn a lot on your own and from events in life, but teachers are there to help. A teacher instills a love of learning, fosters creativity, and gives you faith. Mr. Benitez did this to absolute perfection. He is not just an excellent educator but also an outstanding individual. His kind words and encouragement helped me get through a really difficult moment in my life. It’s safe to say that Mr. Benitez is a big reason I am continuing my education and majoring in mechanical engineering.

I chose Mr. Rivera as my most influential educator because he helped me find my passion and improve in music. I was considering leaving orchestra for my last year of high school due to not having passion or fun with it anymore until Mr. Rivera came this year. He helped us improve so much and made orchestra and music fun again. He taught us a lot about dedication, working hard for what you want, and striving to do your best. His teaching, words, and advice have made an impact on me and influence me to do better.

I chose Mrs. Smith because of her influence on planning for my future. Part of her class has us reflecting on our own thoughts and past experiences. It has helped me get through a lot of the weird things that have happened this school year, some fun and childish while others being little miracles. I’ve never really taken a step back to process what happens in my life before taking her class.

Felicia Byrd

South Houston High School Early College 11th and 12th Grade, San Jac South, AVID

It was a steep mountain to climb getting used to early college classes. However, I had an educator kind and understanding enough to help me feel like it was all worth it and like I was worth something. I chose Mrs. Byrd because she has given me more hope than I could have asked for. I was able to go to Mrs. Byrd at my lowest and confide in her when needed. She would listen to my silly little high school girl problems as well as my serious personal ones. Being the best listener and teacher I could ask for.

Mr. Ngo is an exceptional director and person. Despite his stern exterior, he possesses a kind-hearted nature and goes above and beyond for his students. He consistently makes himself available for conversations, even amidst his busy schedule. Throughout my high school years, he played a pivotal role in helping me break out of my shell. I am profoundly grateful for his encouragement and support in my musical journey. His focus has always been on empowering me to become the best musician I can be, not just for him, but for myself.
