Highlighting the Brightest Students of Pasadena ISD High Schools and their Mentors
May 2, 2024
Welcome to the Pasadena Education Foundation Annual Shining Stars Gala,
It is with great pride that the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation comes together to sponsor the Shining Stars Gala. This Gala is a unique opportunity for the foundation to recognize the top ten students from each high school in Pasadena and the educators who’ve played a critical role in nurturing their minds and serve as a catalyst for their success.
Tonight, you will be able to witness the brightest minds of tomorrow walk across this stage and be honored. My hope is that some day they will return to their community and be a part of this great school district and city.
This magnificent event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Please take the time to read the list of sponsors in the program and know how important the students are to the future of Pasadena. Our Platinum sponsors are; Chevron Pasadena Refinery, Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP and Education Foundation of Harris County.
A special recognition to LyondellBasell and Compudopt for their generous donation of computers for our top ten graduates from each school.

Throughout my high school career, I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with some of the very best educators at Dobie High School. However, no single person has had more of an impact on me and the way I view the world than Mr. Kevin Erickson. His keen intellect, relentless pursuit of detail, and unwavering enthusiasm for the Fine Arts have heavily influenced my perspective of the world. He has played an extraordinarily influential role in my development, serving not only to teach me the virtues of musicianship, but also the values of curiosity, leadership, empathy, collaboration, and competition.

Mr. DeLeon exemplifies everything you could ever ask for in a teacher and more. He’s extremely knowledgeable, effective at teaching complex topics, and also a New York Times Games champion! However, what sets him apart from others is the learning environment that he’s created and his ability to connect with students. With Mr. DeLeon, mistakes are painful stings, not death sentences, which motivates students to reflect and do better. Through all of my stress-induced mania and eccentric moments, Mr. DeLeon always had my back, and I’m eternally grateful to have been his student. Thank you, Mr. DeLeon!

Choosing Ms. Luong as my Distinguished Educator was an easy decision given her profound impact on my academic journey during my little time as her student. Despite the early morning start of our AP Statistics class, Ms. Luong’s infectious energy and bubbly personality never failed to brighten my day. Beyond her role as a teacher, Ms. Luong has become a source of inspiration for me through her guidance and encouragement, which led me to develop an appreciation for the subject and a newfound fascination with Statistics.

Regardless of the major I choose, I will be following a pre-medicine track throughout college. Following my college years, I plan to enter medical school with the ultimate goal of becoming a medical doctor. Beyond medical pursuits, I also will continue to involve music in my life, hopefully having the ability to perform in orchestras, symphonies, or ensembles as a bassoonist.

Mrs. Berreth was a great teacher not because she taught me how to do a titration or solve equilibrium problems, but because she taught me how to appreciate the value of learning and the obtainment of new knowledge. Mrs. Berreth doesn’t want her students to simply score high on exams, she wants her students to gain something new from her teaching and be able to apply it in their future. Mrs. Berreth consistently puts in the work and passion to be a great educator, staying after school nearly every day to give her students the attention they need. I am grateful to have such an influential role model who will continue to have an impact on me years beyond high school.

Every day as I entered her classroom, Mrs. Barrett’s cynical jokes could be heard in contrast to her rosy cheeks and infectious laugh. The irony of this made her a character and caused us to smile through her genuine personality alone. It was through her sincere nature that made a significant impact on me. For when I was going through one of the darkest times in my life, she never once showed judgement, only compassion and empathy. It is for these traits that I look up to her as a human being. Her undeniable integrity has instilled in me the will to help others, and I will forever thank her for guiding the little lost girl I once was.

Mrs. Thompson was my counselor for both my junior and senior years of high school. She was extremely supportive and helpful in the transition of being a high school student taking 1-2 college classes to being a full-time college student taking a full load of college classes. She offered me a lot of guidance and support throughout the years, always looking out for me. She was always very understanding and helpful, doing everything with a smile on her face.

Dr. Shaukat’s dedication and resilience have always inspired me. As an educator, she always provides me with a safe and fun space for learning. We often hold casual conversations about various topics, but I most enjoy hearing about her life experiences. I developed an immense respect for Dr. Shaukat because of the hardships she faced both personally and professionally. Despite these challenges, she persevered and is now a multiple award-winning educator. “You’re Ngoc. Of course you can do it!” Throughout my high school experience, I was always lost regarding the path my life was headed. It was through Ms. Badon’s encouragement and ego boosts that I was me to persevere. She taught me to take pride and confidence in myself but to also seek help when necessary. She was the roof over my head when I needed it the most. Without her, there wouldn’t have been a cheerful and ambitious Ngoc. Mrs. Youngblood was an influential educator in my life as she helped me develop an admiration for math and science. She always made sure to give me extra challenges in math to spark my learning. Her class was always memorable and intriguing from all the activities we did. One example being a presentation she encouraged me and my friend to make about Pi for Pi day. Ms. Patrisso has been a teacher who has been with me for all of my high school career. She taught me the importance of art in my Arts 1 class during my freshman year. She taught me what it takes to create a theatrical production in the Theatre Arts 1 course the following year. I was able to help her do the same for other students as a teacher assistant in my senior year. It was thanks to her and her classes that I was able to figure out what I wanted to do for my future.

Mr. Crews has emphasized the importance of asking questions, made learning concepts more enjoyable and engaging, and sparked my interest in science. While in his class, I observed that he created a safe learning environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and requesting assistance. I have since then been more open to asking for help when concepts may not be clear from the start. Mr. Crews has helped students by prioritizing engaging learning activities. Finally, through his AP Biology class I have found a further appreciation for science.

Mrs. Tunay was the senior instructor, but as everyone knows her, Mrs. Amy. She was always exceptionally intelligent when it came to her “kids.” She had visited us in our junior year, offering us hope that we would be able to obtain our licenses. Yet, it did not seem possible that it could be done in a short amount of time. However, when Senior day arrived, I understood, she was different from the other teachers. She inspired us to learn and demonstrated her knowledge with clarity. She assisted me in understanding both theory and the practical aspects of the workplace.

At this time, I am unsure of what career I want to pursue. I just know that I want to help people in the best way that I can. I have contemplated becoming a therapist or something that deals with the human mind. I want to be someone that people see as a “safe place” to confide in. During my sophomore year, Mr. Arceneaux’s class was the one class that I would always look forward to. Mr. Arceneaux has a way of teaching that keeps his students intrigued and wanting to know more. He throws in unbelievable stories into his teaching that if you were not paying attention, you would miss. Aside from his teaching and hilarious personality, I have never seen a teacher who cares so much about his students as Mr. Arceneaux does. I remember this one specific time that I was unhappy with a grade I received on my essay. I chose Mr. Waldon because of the impact he had on my personal growth. He helped me develop my sense of selfconfidence through multiple years of being in the band program. He taught me to be proud of who I am and what I stand for. He taught me how to be confident in the things that I know. Most importantly, he taught me how to inspire others to find things that they enjoy in life. I don’t think that I would have been a successful band captain without his help. Of all the things he attempted to teach me, I would say that leadership was the most important.

Mr. Claytor has taught me much more than just the cello. He taught me what it means to work hard when success seems so far away. He taught me that even though perfection isn’t necessarily possible that doesn’t mean we can’t strive for it. The discipline of practice and communication applies in all fields. Since freshman year, Mr. Claytor has pushed me to give my all into my work. And it is because of him, that I continue to do so to this day. Thank you Mr. Claytor for everything you’ve contributed to my education these past 4 years.

I chose Ms.Davis since during my time in her classroom I have been able to push myself further than I thought I could have before I met her. She has taught me the value of persistence and strength, which has helped me in all factors of my life, including personal and academic. If it were not for Ms.Davis’s encouragement, I do not believe I would have been able to make it into the top ten students at my high school.

In my final year of high school, I have had the ultimate honor of being a part of Mr. Ackerman’s classroom. He is a remarkable teacher who truly works hard to meet the educational needs of his students while pushing them to strive for the highest degree of success. I am endlessly inspired by his genuine passion and pure excitement for not only the riveting subject of calculus but especially for the prospect of his students challenging themselves and learning new things. This sense of passion and perpetual desire for knowledge is evident in the spirit of his classroom, and it is a value I hope to carry into my future educational and post graduate career. I am truly grateful to have had a teacher who is so intelligent, compassionate, motivating, and incredibly funny, and I will forever cherish the memories and lessons we have shared together. I chose Mr. Wheeler as my distinguished educator because he exposed me to a new perspective on how to look at the world. Before taking physics, I never gave much thought to the intricacies of the world, however, when I started his class I finally understood how the world works. Mr. Wheeler taught me why people’s size determines the overall force, because of their mass and acceleration of the punches, why it hurts worse to be stepped on by a heel more than a boot, because of the force applied to a smaller surface area, and how fighters apply torque to their body for greater strikes. Additionally, he always told us stories of his life abroad, in the military, teaching, and in school, For me, Mr. Wheeler was more than just a teacher, he was sometimes like an elder brother, and he taught me so many lessons both in academics and in life.

Kind and caring, Mrs. Nguyen is an amazing teacher who constantly looks after and motivates her students. I started out being hesitant to use colors and with my ability as a painter, but by the end of the year, Mrs. Nguyen had taught me to not only love the paintings I created but also have confidence in what I can do. Even though our time together was short, her influence has stayed with me throughout my high school journey. Having just returned from the pandemic and knowing no one in the class, the conversations that we had that year, however short, remain significant in my memories. When faced with the choice of whether or not to continue with art, the time spent with Mrs. Nguyen was one of the reasons that pushed me to see what else I am capable of creating. Turns out, the answer was a lot! These past two years of art were filled with new, fun, and amazing memories that I deeply cherished. So, thank you, Mrs. Nguyen, for giving me an unforgettable high school experience, for being the awesome teacher that you are, and for your continuous sacrifice in giving your all to your students!

Asking for extra credit on an assignment after already obtaining an A is not a circumstance a 6th-grade teacher expects to encounter, yet Mrs. Pelletier always supported my ambition for success. Whether that may have been finding a date for me to orally present an assignment after losing my voice or simply checking up on me upon entering high school, Mrs. Pelletier is an individual whom I model myself after. The invaluable foundation she established for not only myself but also for all of my siblings has made me who I am today.

Mr. Hentz is one of the most kind and supportive teachers I’ve ever had. Despite lacking an interest in social studies throughout most of my academic career, his class quickly became one of my favorites junior year, which I thoroughly enjoyed (except when we had timed writes or a socratic seminar). In the midst of the chaos that surrounded junior year, Mr. Hentz ensured that his class would provide us with the least stress while maintaining the standards that an AP class calls for and promoting our success on the AP exam. I am grateful for the life lessons I learned from Mr. Hentz and the kindness and understanding that he supplied, which I will never forget.

Mr. Jose Alavarez-Lucio has been an invaluable mentor throughout my entire high school journey, from the beginning of my freshman year and now concluding my senior year as a distinguished and exceptional educator. His unhesitant dedication and genuine commitment to our growth within the classroom extends far beyond the academic environment as he created a nurturing environment that encouraged his students to grow not only as artists, but as kind individuals. Over these four years, Mr. Alvarez’s mentorship has not only enriched my artistic abilities but also empowered me with the wisdom to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and passion. Mr. Garcia’s geometry class was filled with constant laughter. Stepping into his class always lifted your mood. The environment he created was so joyous and happy. I remember our entire class trying to get through the lesson as quickly as possible so we could have more time to talk to him. He also made the most unappealing subject of “shape math” easy and fun to learn. He was always someone you could tell anything, and we bonded over laughter and giggles. He is still someone I like to keep updated in my present life and hope to always have around.

It has truly been so long since I have talked with Mr. Dlouhy, but something I will not forget is the passion I found in his class. It was through his assignments that I found prominence in my voice. He assigned multiple short essays that involved us to critically think about different political ideas and though I was not too interested in the politics, I found myself entangled in the concept of writing as a form of art. It was through his class that I found the art of expression and the importance to make a stance.

Yes, you will have to learn a lot on your own and from events in life, but teachers are there to help. A teacher instills a love of learning, fosters creativity, and gives you faith.
