here is of course no more iconic event associated with Pasadena than the Tournament of Roses® Parade and Rose Bowl Game. Well over a century after it first began, the 130th Rose Parade® on January 1, 2019, will celebrate the universal nature of music with the theme “The Melody of Life.” With beautiful floats, crafted with 100 percent natural floral materials, marching bands, and equestrian troops the parade is truly a oneof-a-kind spectacle.

Throughout the fall the UCLA Bruins will be playing in the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium. Called America’s premier sporting venue by Sports Illustrated, a game at the Rose Bowl, in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains, is an experience like no other.

T

he Rose Parade® has inspired and enlightened visitors for more than a century, and families have made it a tradition for generations to watch. Located along Colorado Boulevard, and flanked by VIP grandstand seating for the best views (hint: reserve these early), the mid-winter festival celebrates the best of Pasadena, where whimsical, floral covered floats, massive marching bands, decked-out horses and other

ornate participants parade for five and a half miles, led by grand marshal, Chaka Khan.

This year’s parade theme, “The Melody of Life,” celebrates music, the universal language.

While the event is free to the public along the curbside, reserved grandstand seating is available for spectators who want unobstructed views.

Over the years, the annual festival of flowers, history, music, pageantry and sports have harmoniously merged for one of the world’s most thrilling affairs where the streets come alive

with larger-than-life, decorated floats, spirited marching bands and equestrian teams. Fans can also see the grand finale of the 2019 Royal Court, celebrating its 101st year. The Rose Queen and Royal Court participate by riding on a float as ambassadors of the Tournament of Roses.

The Rose Bowl Game® is “The Grandaddy of Them All” – it is oldest of all the bowls having debuted in 1902. In its 105th year, the Rose Bowl Game, presented

DECORATING PLACES

At Decorating Places presented

by Giti Tire, spectators have the chance to view the final stages of the magnificent parade floats.

A variety of seeds, bark, fruits, grasses and flowers will be added to the floats by professionals and volunteers. Visitors can see the floats in all their glory before parading down Colorado Boulevard. The event takes place at Rosemont Pavilion (December 28-31). Be sure to get a ticket in advance.

BANDFEST

From Saturday, December 29, to Sunday, December 30, Bandfest presented by Remo will be a live music event featuring the exceptional bands selected to participate in the 2019 Rose Parade. There are more than 20 bands from across the United States and around the world that will perform in three events over the course of two days, presenting the field show that will take place over the parade.

EQUESTFEST

Saddle up at the The Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Saturday, December 29 as Wells Fargo presents Equestfest. This event features the gorgeous horses and talented riders that serve as the premiere equestrian units for the 2019 Rose Parade. Watch as they perform drills, dances, trick riding and roping. Attendees can also stroll through the stables, talk to riders and learn about the various breeds while enjoying music, food and drinks and themed displays.

Celebrate college football (December 30-31) at a one-ofa-kind event in downtown Los Angeles. The Rose Bowl Bash will include family-friendly interactive games, Rose Bowl Game merchandise, photo activations, beer garden, food trucks and entertainment.

ROSE BOWL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY

The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to honor members of the Rose Bowl Game family who have contributed to the history and excitement of “The Granddaddy of Them All®.”

Witness history on December 31, as the newest members of inductees join a group of legendary football greats.

PARADE

The 130th Rose Parade® presented by Honda promptly beings at 8 am on January 1, 2019. Almost a million spectators line up along the five and a half mile route down Colorado Boulevard, experiencing the sensational signature event while also celebrating New Year’s Day. Needless to say, there is a lot to cheer about.

POST PARADE FLOAT VIEWING

From Tuesday, January 1 at 1 pm to January 2 until 4 pm, visitors can get an up close and personal viewing of the elaborate floral floats that are on display along Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevard. A Showcase of Floats: Post Parade proves just how much workmanship, effort and design are put into their creations, and it’s an intimate way to view the floats if visitors didn’t get a good seat at the actual parade. A shuttle is available from Park & Ride locations in Pasadena.

THINGS TO DO IN PASADENA

The journey doesn’t end with the Tournament of Roses.® Most visitors spend a few extra days exploring Pasadena once the crowds are gone. A

nchoring one end of Colorado Blvd. in Old Pasadena is the Norton Simon Museum, perhaps Pasadena’s most famous art collection.

Housed in a stunning Frank Gehry designed building, surrounded by lush gardens, with a series of giant Rodin figurative sculptures arrayed at the entrance, the Norton Simon collection travels across time from the stone Egyptian gods to old masters like Rembrandt and the ground breaking modernism of Picasso and Lichtenstein.

Mt. Wilson Observatory The observatory atop the nearby 5,715 foot high Mt. Wilson, was completed in 1917 and was the largest in the world until 1949.

The observatory is open to visitors every weekday from 10 am to 5 pm, and from 8:30 am to 5 pm on weekends. Guided weekend tours allow access to the telescope floor. There is a small astrological museum on the grounds and some excellent hiking nearby. The Cosmic Café serves fresh made sandwiches and treats weekends April through November from 9-5.

The Eaton Canyon Natural Area offers 190-acres of nature to explore and wildlife to discover.

Hermit Falls Trail- Beginner/ Intermediate One of Southern California’s most popular trails, Hermit Falls boasts cabins, streams, wildlife, and a dam with cascading water. estled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is more accessible than you would believe. The city sits ten miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles, connected to Southern California by the 210, 134 and 110 freeways. When in town, the pedestrian-friendly city allows you to explore on foot, though shopping bag-toting

visitors can experience a streamlined public transit system, shuttles, clean buses and convenient ride-share services like Lyft and Uber. Pasadena is serviced by many airports, Hollywood Burbank Airport and LAX being the most convenient.

RAIL

Arrive in style via the Metro Gold Line, a 31-mile (50 km) light rail system that connects Pasadena to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where you will find connections to other LA rail lines, Amtrak and Metrolink. In a recent development, Metro completed new light rail extensions to the Gold and Expo lines that have linked Santa Monica Beach and Pasadena, people no longer have to step foot in a car and brave traffic to go the beach.

Trains operate daily and include six stops in Pasadena. Purchase tickets from self-service ticket vending machines at Metro Rail stations.

HOLLYWOOD BURBANK AIRPORT

Hollywood Burbank Airport is a major life hack for travelers flying in from cities along the West Coast, the Southwest, New York City, Chicago, and Houston. The airport is much smaller and deals with a fraction of the traffic that goes through LAX daily, making it an easier alternative. The airport is 15 miles (24 km) from Pasadena and takes about half an hour to get 50

there. Taxi fare to the airport will cost about $45 and a ride share app without surge pricing will run about $15. This is a major hub for Southwest Airlines, Alaska, Delta, United, American and JetBlue all offering service to Hollywood Burbank Airport.
