Described as “a shiny jewel of Southern California” by the New York Times, Pasadena thrives with four distinct neighborhoods. Pasadena’s 19th century origins remain reflected in what was once the city’s original marketplace and oldest commercial area, Old Pasadena. A model of historic preservation and civic revitalization, the 21 blocks of Old Pasadena were designated a National Register Historic District in 1983 and contain restored examples of late 19th and early 20th century architecture. WELCOME TO PASADENA The tree-lined and bohemiancentric Playhouse District is home to the Pasadena Playhouse, the official State Theatre of California. With festivals like Pasadena ARTWalk, as well as local crafts and specialty shops, the entire neighborhood is practically an open-air museum, thanks to a large number of public art installations like utility box art, street art, spun chairs and painted crosswalk designs. The visually engaging neighborhood is a feast for the eyes.

South Lake Avenue is a wide, tree lined boulevard flanked by shops and restaurants.
On the eastern edge of downtown Pasadena, near Caltech, South Lake Avenue has taken on the motto “Shop. Dine. Live.” and with good reason. It’s a shopping and dining district that flaunts a stylish, lifestyle approach to happy living. The charming, 10-block area with mid-century and European flair is home to designer shops, artisanal boutiques, outdoor bistros and spas.
The Civic Center District, between Old Pasadena and Playhouse District, is home to beautifully designed buildings reflecting Beaux-Arts and Mediterranean Revival architecture. History still resonates here with landmark buildings including the Pasadena Central Library, Pasadena Civic Auditorium and City Hall. The Civic Center District is also home to The Paseo, a visually striking

A sunny cafe in an industrial-chic space, Lincoln Pasadena is the stomping ground for early birds. The busy breakfast and brunch spot serves up fresh-baked breads and pastries, and has also become known for its fresh and healthy salad bowls.

The tiny Su Beoreg Factory and Bakery is a magnet for foodies who like to indulge in homemade Armenian food. The family-run business only has a handful of tables (it’s more about the take out), which adds to its modest atmosphere. Order one of the signature dishes like su beoreg and sini-monta (open-faced beef
dumplings), rich and flavorful dishes that have been passed down for generations. A contemporary bistro in Northeast Pasadena, AltaEats was one of the original restaurant pioneers in the area. Opened in 2013, AltaEats is a true gem, serving seasonal bites in an
assortment of shareable plates. From bacon-wrapped dates to chicken and waffles, the eclectic menu is innovative and delicious. It’s only open for dinner, and reservations are strongly recommended.

fter the sun sets, the afterhours scene becomes vibrant, offering a full spectrum of inspiring venues— from cafes with live jazz to a legendary comedy club—known for its down-to-earth and laidback vibes. The dynamic live music scene put Pasadena on the map with plenty of unique venues offering a range of entertainment. Any night of the week, visitors can head to notable bars, restaurants and lounges to gather with friends, order a cocktail and hear live music.
A popular local haunt, King’s Row Gastropub—inside a historic, landmark building—serves up New American comfort food, 24 beers on tap, craft cocktails and an exciting happy hour for the after-work crowd. Tapping into the live music scene, King’s Row also features local musicians and bands that take center stage with live performances for the perfect feel-good vibes. The trendy Maestro may be a hip Mexican restaurant but its fostered a strong bar scene thanks to the exceptional craft cocktail menu, and huge magnet
for Mezcal lovers. Hitting all the right spots, innovative, Mezcaland tequila-heavy libations are just as pretty as they are delicious. The nation’s most celebrated performers rock out at The Rose, Pasadena’s most famous venue for live concerts. Some of the biggest names in rock, pop and country have performed here for crowds up to 1,500 people. The venue offers table service with a complete dinner menu to make it a full experience. The Speakeasy, a true speakeasy bar with hidden entrance and a secret password, is well worth the hype. The hip, modern cocktail lounge is inspired by the old glory days of the 1920s, with live jazz music on the weekends. Der Wolfskopf, a German beer hall is a beautiful location with shiny, polished wood floors and vintage inspired décor, as well as signature beers on tap and German sausage. It’s the perfect spot to catch the game or knock back an ale in the outdoor courtyard. Best of all? There’s another secret, speakeasy bar on the lower level! Live jazz is also the main attraction on Thursdays at The Tap Room inside the five-star Langham Huntington Pasadena hotel. f art is a window to the soul, then Pasadena is a glass town. With its fascinating art history, fine-art museums and cultural institutions, Pasadena is home to inspiring, engaging and important art, with the majority of attractions within walking distance. Here, the world seems to stand still as visitors admire paintings, sculptures and exhibits that are both striking and moving, from permanent collections to rare exhibits (whether centuries old or contemporary). Pasadena is also proud to feature a distinguished, American Craftsman architectural scene, one of the most prominent in the world. The Huntington Library is chockfull of compelling artwork, focused on British portraiture (though you’ll also have to stroll the 120-acres of landscaped gardens). Home to one of the finest British art collections outside the United Kingdom, art lovers get up close and personal with notable paintings like Thomas Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy” and Thomas Lawrence’s “Pinkie.” The library is equally exceptional, boasting a collection of rare, out-ofprint books, manuscripts and historical letters. Inspiring with art closer to home, Pasadena Museum of California Art features rotating, modern art exhibits that embody all things California. You cannot miss pop inspired “Kosmic Krylon Garage” by Los Angeles-born Kenny

Scharf, who ran in the same circle as New York City artists like Keith Haring in the 1980s. Norton Simon Museum, known for its Old Masters collections— particularly pieces by notable, 17th-century Dutch painters like Rembrandt and Brueghel and French impressionists like Monet and Renoir—is one of the most influential museums in the country, and is the most impressive of Pasadena’s contemporary art scene. The collection also includes works by Picasso and Van Gogh, and was featured in the YouTube documentary “The Cool School.” Built in the 1920s, the storied Pasadena Playhouse is legendary for stage productions. History resonates within the walls of the 686-seat theater, where notable playwrights like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Tennessee Williams premiered plays on this very stage, and a slew of notable actors still perform here today (like Angela Bassett and Al Pacino). The Spanish Colonial courtyard is often used for community events like the Zona Rosa Thursday Night Music Series. Feel the magic at Castle Green, a Nationally Registered Historic Landmark from the Victorian Era, originally built as a hotel in 1898, Castle Green is wellpreserved with incredibly detailed design work inspired by Moorish architecture. Visitors are transported to another era

(expect arched walkways and glorious verandas), reliving history in one the most unique attractions in Pasadena. With its old world allure, Castle Green has served as the set for many Hollywood movies. This year, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a regional celebration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, is welcomed at Pasadena museums for themed exhibits. Four exhibitions in association with PST LA/LA will take place in Pasadena (Pasadena Museum of California Art, Armory Center for the Arts, USC Pacific Asia Museum, and The Huntington). Kids of all ages get engaged and inspired here, and there’s never a dull moment thanks to plenty of exciting attractions and activities. Kidspace Children’s Museum is one of the top attractions for young explorers. The imaginative space features more than forty exciting interactive exhibits for kids to discover and engage in adventures. During the holiday season, there’s fun for the whole family with snow days and the annual Noon Year’s Eve party.

Pasadena is an outdoor wonderland, and families explore several trails and parks to connect with nature. Eaton Canyon Natural Area is a 190acre zoological, botanical and geological nature preserve with picnic areas, native plants and hiking trails. Be sure to take your kids to Junior Nature Trail, less than a quarter mile, which is scenic with a pond, California sagebrush and animals like birds and rabbits. At 61-acres, Brookside Park offers an eclectic recreation program that includes swimming, tennis courts and playgrounds for youngsters. Victory Park is the perfect place for children with a dedicated area, and it also includes a baseball diamond, lift field, volleyball court and plenty of picnic spots.
Pasadena Ice Skating Center is the coolest place in Pasadena. Young ones bundle up and put on skates for family-fun skating around the rink. The center offers skate classes and private lessons for first timers, and is a popular location to host birthday parties. Offering a full Fall Family Festival program with activities for all, the Norton Simon Museum knows how to create memories. The themed family activities take place on the weekends, like Stories in the Afternoon on Sundays, and Family Day on Saturdays. There are also plenty of activities for young adults, including programs like Middle School ArtsLab and Teen Arts Academy, which helps teens continue to explore their creative minds while school is in session.

essential for outdoor enthusiasts, complete with hiking trails, equestrian trails, towering canyons, excellent lookout points, wonderful wildlife and a seasonal stream fed by a cascading waterfall. A visit here is a sure-fire way to completely immerse in unspoiled, natural beauty. Mount Lowe is one of the most recognized peaks in Pasadena,
popular with outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers and history buffs thanks to its immense beauty and history. There are several trails (like the commonly used Sam Merrill Trail off Loma Alta Drive), many of which have been hiked for more than a century. All visitors will behold deep canyon views, pine forests and plenty of wildflower along the way.

THE OUTDOORS Visitors who like more dramatic views, head to Mount Wilson Observatory, a 5,700-foot astronomical observatory residing in the San Gabriel Mountains. Visitors can roam the beautiful grounds, dazzled by a simple—yet powerful—scene of endless, clear blue sky. Warning: sunsets are addictive. Outdoor activities can also be experienced at the Gamble House, one of Pasadena’s most iconic attractions. A California and National Historic Landmark,
the Gamble House blends within immaculate craftsman homes along the Arroyo Terrace Neighborhood—though this 1908 standout has major star appeal. It was the on-screen home of Dr. Emmett Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, and it is the subject of an upcoming documentary by Don Hahn whose previous work includes “The Lion King” and “Beauty & the Beast.” The three story house museum is a blast from the past, a visual treat for architecture junkies and nostalgia seekers. On
Tuesdays the museum opens the beautifully landscaped rear lawn and terrace for visitors to pack a lunch and picnic. Regular tours are offered Thursday – Sunday. The “outdoors” isn’t limited to nature, and it’s easily experienced with a stroll through Old Pasadena. From shopping to dining to a wonderful farmer’s market, this historic center is the heart and soul of Pasadena, best explored on foot.

TOURNAMENT OF ROSES T
he Rose Parade has inspired and enlightened visitors for more than a century, and families have made it a tradition for generations to watch. Located along Colorado Boulevard, and flanked by VIP grandstand seating for the best views (hint: reserve these early), the mid-winter festival celebrates the best of Pasadena, where whimsical, floral covered floats, massive marching bands, decked-out horses and other ornate participants parade for five and a half miles, led by a grand marshal (Gary Sinise). This year’s parade theme, “Making a Difference”, honors and
celebrates all people who act in selfless, generous and kind ways to aid or benefit others. While the event is free to the public along the curbside, reserved grandstand seating is available for spectators who want unobstructed views.

At Decorating Places, spectators have the chance to view the final stages of the magnificent parade floats. A variety of seeds, bark, fruits, grasses and flowers will be added to the floats by professionals and volunteers. Visitors can see the floats in all their glory before parading down Colorado Boulevard. The event takes place at Rosemont Pavilion (December 28-31) and Rose Float Plaza South (December 28-30). Be sure to get a ticket in advance.
Saddle up at the The Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Friday, December 29 as Wells Fargo presents Equestfest. This event features the gorgeous horses and talented riders that serve as the premiere equestrian units for the 2018 Rose Parade. Watch as they perform drills, dances, trick riding and roping. Attendees can also stroll through the stables, talk to riders and learn about the various breeds while enjoying music, food and drinks and themed displays.
From Monday, January 1 at 1 PM to January 2 until 4 PM, visitors can get an up-close view of the elaborate floral floats that are on display along Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevard. A Showcase of Floats: Post Parade presented by Miracle-Gro proves just how much workmanship, effort and design was put into their creations, and is an intimate way to view the floats for visitors who did not get a good seat at the actual parade. Shuttle service is available from Park & Ride locations in Pasadena.

From Friday, December 29 to Saturday, December 30, Bandfest presented by Remo will be a live music event featuring the exceptional bands selected to participate in the 2018 Rose Parade. More than 20 bands from across the United States and around the world will perform in three events over the course of two days, presenting the field show that will take place during the parade.
The 129th Rose Parade presented by Honda promptly beings at 8 AM on January 1, 2018. Almost a million spectators line up along the five and a half mile route down Colorado Boulevard, experiencing the sensational signature event while also celebrating New Year’s Day. Needless to say, there is a lot to cheer about.
The journey doesn’t end with the Tournament of Roses. Most visitors spend a few extra days exploring Pasadena once the crowds are gone. Whether it’s sightseeing through Old Pasadena, shopping at South Lake District, hiking through Mount Lowe, visiting the number of excellent museums or checking out the emerging dining scene in burgeoning new neighborhoods, Pasadena offers plenty to discover.

Destined to become legendary, the festival is produced by Goldenvoice, the organization known for its iconic festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach. The annual, two-day Pasadena Chalk Festival brings more than 600 skilled chalk artists from all corners of the globe congregate for the unique art form. Bringing
sidewalks to life, the artists transform the city into canvas, accompanied by hands-on activities and live performances. In 2018, Pasadena will celebrate science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) with activities to inspire our audiences to discover the world of space exploration and the intersection of art and science. Activities will include special exhibitions at museums and special features during signature events like Live on Green and ArtNight.
Anchoring Pasadena’s scene, the Rose Bowl Stadium is a mecca for active folks. Erected in 1922, the masterful stadium was built for hundreds of thousands of spectators to enjoying sporting events like UCLA college football and concerts of epic proportions where U2 and Coldplay recently took the stage. estled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is more accessible than you would believe. The city sits ten miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles, connected to Southern California by the 210, 134 and 110 freeways. When in town, the pedestrian-friendly city allows you to explore on foot, though shopping bag-toting visitors can experience a streamlined public transit system, shuttles, clean buses and convenient rideshare services like Lyft and Uber. Pasadena is serviced by many airports, LAX and Hollywood Burbank Airport being the most convenient. Metro Rapid Bus on the Colorado Street Bridge.

Arrive in style via the Metro Gold Line, a 31-mile (50 km) light rail system that connects Pasadena to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where you will find connections to other LA rail lines, Amtrak and Metrolink. In a recent development, Metro completed new light rail extensions to the Gold and Expo lines that have linked Santa Monica Beach and Pasadena, people no longer have to step foot in a car and brave traffic to go the beach. Trains operate daily and include six stops in Pasadena. Purchase tickets from self-service ticket vending machines at Metro Rail stations. Cost is $1.75 one way. Hollywood Burbank Airport is a major life hack for travelers flying in from cities along the West Coast, the Southwest, and New York City. The airport is much smaller and deals with a fraction of the traffic that goes through LAX daily, making it an easier alternative. This airport is 15 miles (24 km) from Pasadena, it takes about half an hour to get there, a taxi will run you about $45 and a ride share app without surge pricing will run you about $15. This is a major hub for Southwest Airlines. Taking a cab from LAX to Pasadena can cost upwards of $80 USD, this might be a perfectly suitable solution for those traveling with friends and 46
