Welcome! Welcome to our 29th Annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference. We’re so glad to have you with us! After nearly three decades of hosting our landmark event, we know that the value and demand for sustainable agriculture education only continues to grow, which is why we’re so glad we can create this special space for professional growth, meaningful connection, and honoring food and farming. Thanks to your commitment to life-long learning and steadfast support over the past 29 years, we’ve come a long way in building a stronger, healthier, and more equitable food system. But of course, there’s still much work to do. During your time at this year’s conference, I hope you make sure to take time to introduce yourself
to other attendees and share what your goals are for the coming season with one another—you might just make the connections you need to help you accomplish them. Also, in your own way, I hope you’ll make some space each day for celebrating one another. After all, our task at hand is not easy by any means, though we’re doing it in good company, and we’re certainly better together
Hannah Smith-Brubaker

30th Annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference February 3–6, 2021 • Lancaster Join us to celebrate an incredible three decades of learning, sharing, and connecting over food and farming.
PASAbilities Award Recipients Rolling Harvest Food Rescue Sustainable Agriculture Community Leadership Award
Rolling Harvest Food Rescue works to increase access to donated fresh produce and other healthy foods by area hunger-relief sites that serve the at-risk, food-insecure population by providing local farmers and food producers with free, effective delivery and distribution of their surplus. Rolling Harvest is committed to sharing what they’ve learned through their gleaning journey over the past eight years so that other geographic areas can duplicate its straightforward model of helping farmers share all of their surplus and beautifully irregular produce that would otherwise go to waste.
Clarion River Organics Sustainable Agriculture Business Leadership Award
Clarion River Organics provides marketing and distribution services for 16 Amish organic produce farms. Clarion enables small and mid-size farms to participate in the wholesale food system, which these farms might otherwise have limited access to—particularly farms with technological limitations. Clarion River Organics know that successful small and mid-size farms are key to a sustainable food economy, and that alternative distribution models will not serve the majority of eaters. They believe it’s crucial to develop opportunities for all farms to participate in the mainstream system if our food economy at large is to become sustainable.
Join us on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Freedom A to celebrate this year's PASAbilities Awards recipients!
Jenn Halpin & Matt Steiman, Dickinson College Farm Sustainable Agriculture Leadership Award
Jenn and Matt founded the organic farm at Dickinson College in 2007. In addition to directing all aspects of the farm, Jenn cofounded Dickinson’s Food Studies Certificate Program, and helped develop purchasing initiatives at the college. Additionally, Jenn was the founding president of Farmers on the Square, Carlisle’s thriving produceronly farmers market, and served on the PASA board for nine years, several of them as board chair. Matt is a FARMDATA database co-founder, and leads the farm’s hands-on demonstration projects in biogas, biodiesel, and solar energy. Matt also served as a board member of Farmers on the Square. In their time farming and teaching together, Jenn and Matt have mentored over fifty farm apprentices and hundreds of college students.
Thank you PASA’s board of directors would like to honor and thank Heidi Secord and Brooks Miller for their time, energy, and thoughtful service to the sustainable agriculture community during their tenure on the board. Heidi’s service began in 2011. She served on several committees over her nine-year tenure, most recently the Governance and Nomination Committee. Heidi and her husband, Gary Bloss, run Josie Porter Farm, a diversified vegetable farm in Monroe County. Brooks was first elected to the board in 2015. He was instrumental in leading thoughtful discussions about the future of sustainable agriculture and PASA’s role and mission as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Brooks and his wife, Anna Santini, run North Mountain Pastures, a pastured livestock farm in Perry County.
Do you know someone deserving of a PASAbilities Award? Please consider nominating them at: http://bit.ly/nom2021 Have you ever considered running for the PASA Board of Directors or know someone who would make a great board member? Please consider nominating yourself or someone else at: http://bit.ly/PASAboard
Please join the PASA board at the PASAbilities Awards Ceremony to honor Heidi and Brooks for their service and leadership. #PASA2020 | 11

KIDS & TEENS Infant & Toddler Playroom
Wednesday–Saturday 4th Floor of Montgomery House (access from Level 3) We love that families come to the conference, and we know for our youngest it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming! We invite you to bring your infants and toddlers to this space that has some comfy furniture, four walls and a door, a restroom, plus some fun toys. The room will be open all day, but we also invite you to gather for some group playtime between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and between 3:30 and 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Future Farmers (K–8th grade) Thursday–Saturday Level 4
Our Future Farmers program is designed to educate and entertain your children while you attend the conference. Children from kindergarten through eighth grade will enjoy a wide range of activities developed to increase their understanding of farming, nutrition, and sustainability. Programming is developed and facilitated by Heritage Creek Farm Camp (K–2nd grade) and Penn State Student Farm (3rd–5th & 6th–8th grade).
Future Farmers Schedule
Teen Meet-Up Space Thursday–Saturday Walnut Room (Level 3) We invite high schoolers to check out our conference sessions, and we also provide this space to step away from it all to relax, hang out, and swap notes on what is being learned throughout the conference.
Young Leaders Summit (9th–12th grade) Friday Walnut Room (Level 3)
The LEAF Project is hosting our conference’s first-ever Young Leaders Summit. We believe that the ideas that will make our food system and world better will ultimately come from today’s youth and we want to create a forum to hear their voices. This is a space for youth to contribute to the farming community, connect with youth from across the state, and share their bold ideas.
