Nueve rayas horizontales iguales que alternan el blanco (superior e inferior) con el azul. Hay una casilla blanca en la esquina superior contigua al mástil con un sol que lleva una cara humana, conocida como el Sol de Mayo con 16 rayos alternativamente triangulares y ondulados.
El escudo uruguayo fue aprobado el 19 de marzo de 1829. Dentro de un óvalo, coronado por un sol, la balanza simboliza la igualdad y la justicia; el Cerro de Montevideo, la fuerza; el caballo, la libertad, y el buey, la abundancia.

El Teru Teru es uno de los centinelas del campo, anunciador con sus gritos de la aproximación de intrusos. Charles Darwin decía en el siglo XIX que los teros eran de gran utilidad a los viajeros, ya que les anunciaba la vecindad de los ladrones en los caminos.
El Ceibo se encuentra en su forma silvestre en zonas húmedas, bañados, bordes de ríos y arroyos. Puede alcanzar los veinte metros de altura. La flor del Ceibo ha sido incluida en canciones musicales de hondo arraigo popular y típicamente autóctonas.

Los gauchos de nuestras tierras lo adoptaron como su bebida tradicional, y es indudable que Uruguay es el país más matero del mundo. Los uruguayos toman mate día y noche, solos, en pareja o en ronda, en el trabajo o en la playa, en el ómnibus, en el auto... y hasta andando en bicicleta!
The gauchos of our lands adopted it like their traditional drink, and undoubtedly Uruguay is the biggest consumer of mate in the world. Uruguayans drink mate day and night, alone or with others, at work or at the beach, in the bus or in the car... and even riding a bycicle!
El kit del mate consta de una calabaza, una bombilla, un termo con agua caliente y yerba, que es su ingrediente principal y es la hoja molida de una planta llamada Yerba Mate. El mate es motivo de reunión entre los uruguayos, que lo comparten con amigos, en momentos de charla y camaradería. Los ruiditos del final de cada mate (más de 3 es mala educación), son una señal para pasarlo al cebador, que generalmente es el anfitrión.
The mate kit consists of a pumpkin (special container), a metal straw, a thermos with hot water and mate, its main ingredient which comes from dried and grated leaves of a plant called Yerba Mate.
The mate is a good reason for Uruguayans to get together just for a chat or comradeship. The soft noises at the end of each mate (more than three is bad education), are a signal to pass it back to the mate maker, who is generally the host.

Una de las mejores actrices latinoamericanas. Nieta del máximo poeta uruguayo, Juan Zorrilla de San Martín. Estudió teatro en Londres (1946-48). Entre 1948 y 1958 integró la Comedia nacional. Residió en Europa y New York y en 1971 se radicó en Buenos Aires. Actuó en más de 100 obras de teatro y en más de treinta películas.
Fue pintor, ceramista, escultor, muralista, director, escritor, compositor y constructor. En 1958 empezó a construir Casapueblo, la escultura habitable que fue su hogar y taller.
One of the best Latin-American actresses. Granddaughter of the greatest Uruguayan poet, Juan Zorrilla de San Martín. She studied theater in London (1946-48). Between 1948 y 1958 she integrated Uruguay’s most important theater company, The National Comedy. She lived in Europe and New York and in 1971 she moved to Buenos Aires. She acted in over one hundred plays and more than thirty films.

He was one of the Uruguayan writers and intellectuals with most recognition all over the world. Strong defender of human rights, democracy and social justice, he burst into the international scene with Las venas abiertas de América Latina (Open Veins of Latin America) (1971), an essay on the history of the Americas through chronicles, narratives and reflections, which was translated into twenty languages.
Since 2013 she was the principal dancer of the Ballet Nacional del Sodre -BNS-, the best ballet company in Latin America. From 2002 to 2013 she was a soloist at the American Ballet Theatre in New York. In 2017 she was awarded “Best Dancer” in Moscow with the Benois de la Danse, the most important award of classical dance in the world. She retired in 2019.
Fue uno de los escritores e intelectuales uruguayos con mayor reconocimiento a nivel mundial. Fuerte defensor de los derechos humanos, la democracia y la justicia social, irrumpió en la escena internacional con Las venas abiertas de América Latina (1971), un ensayo sobre la historia de América a través de crónicas, narraciones y reflexiones, que fue traducido a veinte idiomas.
Desde 2013 fue la principal bailarina del BNS -Ballet Nacional del Sodre-, catalogado como la mejor compañía de ballet de Latinoamérica. De 2002 a 2013 fue solista en el American Ballet Theatre de Nueva York. En 2017 fue premiada como “Mejor Bailarina” en Moscú con el Veníos de la Danse, el galardón más importante de la danza clásica en el mundo. Se retiró en 2019.

Tango Tango, danza y canción es un producto de la cultura popular urbana del Río de la Plata. En los puertos de Montevideo y Buenos Aires convergieron la milonga, el tango andaluz, la habanera y el candombe. El tango más famoso del mundo, La Cumparsita, es uruguayo. Fue creado en 1916 por Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, y estrenado en el café La Giralda, frente a la Plaza Independencia, en 1917.
En la última década del siglo 19, existieron en Montevideo diversos sitios de baile, donde se danzaban los milongones (un tango mas primigenio), se les denominada “Academias”, estando en su mayoría ubicadas en la Ciudad Vieja. Las Academias más recordadas estaban alrededor del Mercado del Puerto y de la Plaza Cagancha. En setiembre de 2009 la UNESCO declaró al tango como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad.

Tango Tango, dance and song, is a product of the urban popular culture of the Río de la Plata. In the ports of Montevideo and Buenos Aires converged the milonga, the Andalusian tango, the Havanan and the african candombe. The most famous tango in the world, La Cumparsita, is Uruguayan. It was created in 1916 by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, and premiered at the La Giralda café, front to Plaza Independencia, in 1917.
In the last decade of the 19th century, there were several places in Montevideo, in where the milongones (an older and simple version of tango) where danced. These places were called “Academies”, and most of them were located in the Old City. The most remembered Academies were around the Seaport Market and the Plaza Cagancha. On September, 2009, the tango was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

La Murga, con sus raíces en el género chico español, es la expresión más pícara y transgresora de éstas festividades y tiene su escenario barrial que es el Tablado. Al conjunto que lo práctica, también se le denomina Murga.

Pero el máximo espectáculo de candombe, es cuando todas las comparsas (conjuntos) de negros y “lubolos” (blancos pintados de negros) desfilan en pleno Barrio Sur y Palermo en el famoso e imperdible Desfile de las Llamadas. Todo el mes de febrero los montevideanos lo dedican al Dios Momo.

The Candombe The Candombe is an afroUruguayan rythem of percussion that is unique in the world. Over two centuries ago, the ancestors of today’s Uruguayan black community arrived from Africa as slaves. They were the creators of candombe, a percussion rythmn full of sensuality.
The fire with which the drums are tuned is a show in itself. But candombe´s greatest show is when all the groups of blacks and “lubolos” (white people with black painted faces) march through the districts of Barrio Sur and Palermo in the famous Parade of the Calls. During February, Montevideans celebrate to the God Momo.

Parroquia Cristo Obrero Ubicada en Ruta 11, es una de las obras más famosas del uruguayo Eladio Dieste (1917 2000), que realizó obras notables en el mundo utilizando lo que él denominó cerámica armada: construcciones abovedadas con ladrillo, armadura de acero y un mínimo de hormigón. Actualmente es candidata a ser declarada Patrimonio Mundial por UNESCO. Eladio Dieste, ingeniero de profesión y arquitecto de corazón, ha sido uno de los ingenieros más importantes del siglo XX. El decano de arquitectura del MIT, Stanford Anderson, considera a la Parroquia Cristo Obrero, uno de los logros arquitectónicos más perfectos de la segunda mitad del siglo XX a nivel mundial.
Cristo Obrero Church Located on Route 11, is one of the most famous works of Eladio Dieste (1917 - 2000), Uruguayan. Many of his remarkable works are worldwide famous. He used construction in reinforced brick: brick vaults, steel framework and a minimum amount of concrete. It is currently a candidate to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Eladio Dieste, a profesional engineer with love for architecture, has been one of the most outstanding engineers of the 20th Century. MIT Architecture Dean, Stanford Anderson, considered the Cristo Obrero Church as one of the most perfect architectural achievements in the world during the second half of the 20th Century.

Durante el verano los turistas recorren la nueva peatonal que es un paseo gastronómico y artesanal. Por la tarde o noche se pueden ver espectáculos en el Anfiteatro frente a la playa. It is the largest resort in Canelones and one of the largest in the country. Here the famous Chilean writer Pablo Neruda spend his holidays with Matilde Urrutia in the 50s. During the summer tourists can enjoy the pedestrian street as a gastronomic and craft ride. In the afternoon or evening you can see shows at the amphitheater in front of the beach.

The Eagle
El Águila, a 3 kilómetros de la ciudad de Atlántida, es la construcción más famosa de la costa rioplatense. Debe su existencia al millonario napolitano Natalio Michelizzi, que residía en Buenos Aires y a el constructor uruguayo Juan Torres.
El Águila, located 3 kilometers from the city of Atlántida. This is the most famous construction along the coast of the Rio de la Plata. The idea was that of Italian millionaire, Natalio Michelizzi who lived in Buenos Aires. Its constructor was Juan Torres, Uruguayan.
El 1º de agosto de 1945, el Sr. Michelizzi, le pidió a Torres que le edificara en su terreno frente al mar una pieza para leer, pintar y recibir amigos, agregando sobre el techo un águila, recubierta de piedras que parecieran plumas. Torres, sin ningún plano, imaginó y creó la cabeza del águila, que dura hasta la actualidad. Abierta al público todo el año.
On August 1st 1945, Mr. Michelizzi asked Torres to build him a room where he could read, paint and entertain his friends on his waterfront lot. On the roof he wanted an eagle with stones that would look like feathers. Without an architectural plan, Torres created the eagle’s head. This construction is still standing and is open to visitors all year round.

Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos En 1863 se instaló en Fray Bentos la Liebig Extract of Meat Co. que produjo una revolución industrial, paisajística, social y económica. En 1924 pasa a ser totalmente británica y cambia su nombre a Anglo del Uruguay. Vive un período de auge hasta los años 50. Hoy se lo conoce como Barrio Anglo, Monumento Histórico Nacional desde 1987. En febrero de 2010 se presenta este sitio patrimonial a la lista de UNESCO como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad bajo el nombre “Paisaje Cultural Industrial Fray Bentos”. En marzo de 2011 el Comité del Patrimonio Mundial / UNESCO lo clasifica como “proyecto piloto” para la Región Latinoamericana. El 5 de julio de 2015 la UNESCO lo declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape In 1863 the Liebig Extract of Meat Co. settled in Fray Bentos and produced an industrial, landscape, social and economic revolution. In 1924 becomes fully British and changed its name to Anglo del Uruguay. Lives a boom until the 50s. Are now known as Barrio Anglo, a National Historic Landmark since 1987. In February 2010 this heritage site is presented to the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the name “Industrial Fray Bentos Cultural Landscape.” In March 2011 the World Heritage Committee / UNESCO classified it as a “pilot project” for the Latin America Region. On the 5th of July of 2015, UNESCO declared it World Heritage Site.

Permanece abierto todo el año y es el mayor centro de atracción turística de Río Negro. El predio se extiende sobre una playa arenosa del río Uruguay, con árboles y vegetación nativa. Alberga un camping agreste y urbanizado apto para 2,000 carpas, muy buena infraestructura.

Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos Está ubicada a 5 km. del barrio histórico de Colonia del Sacramento. Se inauguró en 1910 y se clausuró en 1912. Se reabrirá en 2021, con capacidad para 4,000 personas, para espectáculos culturales y deportivos.

Bullring Real de San Carlos It is located 5 km. away from the historic neighborhood of Colonia del Sacramento. It´s the only square of its kind in Uruguay, with a Mudejar style, similar to the bullring of Spain, preserving arches and circumference details. It was inaugurated in 1910 and closed in 1912. It will be reopened in 2021, with capacity for 4,000 people, for cultural and sports shows.

También llamado Puerta de la Ciudadela, fue construido con piedra labrada y está protegido por una fosa, sobre la que hay un puente levadizo. A sus costados tiene un gran muro de piedras de enorme espesor. Es, junto a la Calle de los Suspiros, el lugar más visitado en Colonia del Sacramento.
In 1745 this access to the city of Portuguese domination was inaugurated. Also called Puerta de la Ciudadela, it was built with carved stone and is protected by a pit, on which there is a drawbridge. To its sides it has a great wall of stones of enormous thickness. It is, along with the Calle de los Suspiros, the most visited place in Colonia del Sacramento.

In front of the Plaza de los Treinta y Tres is this neoclassical temple built between 1857 and 1874. The columns are made of Carrara marble and the frescoes on the walls and the “Gloria de San José” of the dome are by the Italian painter Lino Dinetto.
El reloj fue inaugurado en 1900, y su esfera fue construida por la misma fabrica del Big Ben. El sonido de la campana de tres toneladas puede escucharse a 15 km. de distancia.

En Uruguay, la plástica tuvo un desarrollo peculiar y en San José, la presencia de Lino Dinetto no fue casualidad. Dinetto nació en 1927 en Italia y llamó la atención por el uso de una paleta llena de color y modernismo para aquellos días. Su particular forma de sentir el arte, marcó a todos los josefinos por el valioso legado que dejó plasmado en los frescos de la Catedral de San José de Mayo durante la década del 50 del siglo XX. La realización de estos frescos posibilitó que Dinetto estuviera cuatro años en San José de Mayo, dejando su legado también en la Capilla del Huerto y en la iglesia Libertad.
In Uruguay, the plastic arts had a peculiar development and in San José, the presence of Lino Dinetto was not a coincidence. Dinetto was born in 1927 in Italy and drew attention for his use of a palette full of color and modernism for those days. His particular way of feeling art, marked all the inhabitants from San José for the valuable legacy he left embodied in the frescoes of the Cathedral of San José de Mayo during the 50s of the twentieth century. The realization of these frescoes enabled Dinetto to spend four years in San José de Mayo, leaving his legacy also in the Huerto Chapel and in the Libertad church.

Kiyú es una de las playas más hermosas sobre las costas del Río de la Plata. Está ubicada sobre las Barrancas de San Gregorio, que son formaciones geológicas de 50 metros de altura. Una serpenteante rambla une el Parador Grande con el Parador Chico, donde se puede recorrer el Camino del Indio para acceder a la playa y disfrutar de las actividades deportivas que tienen lugar en la temporada de verano. Entre ambos paradores se encuentra “la bajada del medio” una zona muy utilizada para vuelos en parapentes y alas delta.
