President's Note Hey Key Club! Hope everyone had a fantastic summer, I just want to officially welcome y'all back to school! Our Key Club is going to kick butt this year, but not without your help! We have to work hard if we want to make Top 25 this year and shine at DCON. Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 9, and we quite figuratively cannot wait to see you there. Come be a part of something spectacular. The service awaits!! Yours in service, Junsung Lee
Editor's Note Hey everyone! I am all sorts of excited about the new school year for Key Club. It's going to be a superb year, and I know we can make it to Top 25!! One easy task that will earn us more points is...you guessed it, more articles! Remember that every 100 words earns you 30 minutes of service, so get cracking. Also, starting this year, I will be selecting the Editor's Choice article of every month! If you write a noteworthy article and submit it for the newsletter, you'll be entered into a raffle to win a gift card to your favorite store! I can't wait to kick off the new year with everyone. Let's get out there and serve, serve, serve! Yours in service,

Poster Making Social Takes An Adventurous Turn by Page Trotter
But while using a thick permanent marker to spell out the words “JOIN KEY CLUB”, there was a minor incident. As we lifted the flimsy poster from the sticky school hallway floors, a print of what we had just written appeared on the tiles!
As hilarious as we found it to be, we knew we had to remove it, especially after a janitor reminded us that the floors had “been polished for the last month.” With heavy duty cleaning supplies, fortunately found in our sponsor’s classroom, we were able to scrape, scrub, and scratch the phrase from the floor. Even though the club would have loved to leave the slogan printed on the ground to really attract students on the first day of school, but we knew the posters would do the job.
COMMUNITY
Each Key Club member who arrived at Paschal on Monday, August 11 came with creative ideas to kick off the 2014-15 school year. Paints in hand, we were all able to put our catchy slogans on posters to be hung throughout the school. Our goal was to interest the incoming freshmen in joining our service organization, and remind upperclassmen that we do not make keys!

Sears Back-to-School Shopping Event
HONOR
by Jünsung Lee On August 2nd and 16th, we spent our Saturdays helping the kids from Diamond Hill Jarvis Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Worth with their shopping for back-to-school attire. The Kiwanis Club has fundraised enough money for the kids to buy their own clothes, making this wonderful event possible. Throughout these events, I learned about their school and home lives, and encouraged them to get excited about the new school year.
The Sears Back-to-School

shopping event wasn’t just a matter of handing the money out to the kids, but instead it was about spending time with them and making some new younger friends. This event not only allowed the students to get their back-to-school necessities, but it also gave them a chance to get pumped for a new school year. In the end, the shopping went very well, but the real reward was seeing the warm smiles on their faces when they had gotten all their supplies. I’m really glad that they’re going to stay classy thanks to the Kiwanis Club.
The Mario Kart 5K Fun Run by Janet Diaz
Shout out to Jillian and Isheta who also volunteered at the MK5K!
SELFLESSNESS
Who knew the Mario Kart Fun Run was a thing? I would’ve have loved to run it! But instead I got to volunteer and help make the course an enjoyable event for the runners. Junsung and I were bananas, so as people ran through our lanes we attempted to tag them. Once they were tagged, a balloon was taken from them. There was a lot of waiting in between groups, so in the meantime we sat on the itchy grass and let our faces burn. Junsung complained, “This is the hardest service project of my high school career!” I had to agree, waiting in the sun was not a pleasant experience. However, during that time we discussed more about what our club needs, and we thought that this service project would’ve been ten times more fun if we had more Key Clubbers participate in it! I think any event is a blast when there’s a large group of people present. I hope that all current and future members commit themselves to Key Club, and make service a priority this year!

UNDYING SERVICE

There And Back: Sears Backto-School Shopping by Ashlie Devenney The service project we did with Sears and the kids from Diamond Hill Elementary was absolutely incredible! It was one of my favorite projects because you actually got a chance to work with the kids one on one and get to know them. The Kiwanis Club was so generous in giving us the money to shop for the kids. The girl I worked with was so sweet and incredibly fun. I don't know much about all these kids, but I do know that the shopping trip was a big deal for them and I know they are appreciative of it. Just being able to help these kids get the clothes and stuff they needed for school shows me that not everyone is as fortunate as some and it made me evaluate how I look at everyday life. I couldn't be happier about being included in this project with Key Club, and I can't wait to do it again next year!
An All-Around Enriching Experience by Sarika Sabnis Early in August, a small team of Key Clubbers volunteered at the city of Fort Worth’s Neighborhood University fair. The event was held in order to increase awareness and knowledge about how people could become more involved with the city’s policymaking, as well as to educate them on certain new city regulations. Many groups like the Homeowners Association and Fort Worth Recycling met at the Neighborhood University event in rotations. We as a club helped set up tables and rooms for each of the groups attending, and even served refreshments and to everyone in attendance. After the event was over, we helped stored tables and stacked chairs up to help the organizers clean up. I myself ran into a very good friend of mine at the Neighborhood University event; she was dressed in very professional attire and was looking sharp and important. My friend Alaina McGuffee, whom I met through Fort Worth Sister Cities (another organization I’m very involved in), told me she had been interning at the city council offices for the whole summer. It sounded like an incredibly opportunity for her, and I was so happy that I had the chance to run into her so unexpectedly at this service project!
I had never thought of the importance of such meetings before, so I really took in what Alaina was telling me. She was absolutely right – no where else in the governmental ladder will you as a citizen get a better opportunity at direct democracy. The ordinances and policies that are placed in Fort Worth would never be there without the votes of its essential members (i.e. legal residents of the city).
PASSION
Alaina explained to me the importance of holding meetings like this for all the citizens to attend. After all, if you’re going to be living in a great city like Fort Worth, you ought to be aware of the policy changes taking place. She said she felt it was important to participate or stay actively updated with the actions and news in the city council because it is the best way to be contributing to your individual right to a direct democracy on the local level.
All in all, I had a really eye-opening experience volunteering at the Neighborhood University event. I got to run into an old friend, learn about important civic duties, and help out my city directly. After the service project, I was even able to ask some of the officials about information for obtaining free recycling bins from the city for our school. As vice president of the Recycling Club, which partners closely with our Key Club chapter, I was looking to implement a school-wide recycling program using bins donated from the city. This service project gave me so much good information and insight, not only in terms of service and volunteer work, but also in being an active resident of the city, and some exciting opportunities for programs at our school.
