Even Teachers Scream for Ice Cream by Ashlie Devenney

COMMUNITY

The ice cream social on the last day of school was so much fun!!! It was really nice to get to see my teachers one last time before the summer, and it was also great to see some of my Key Club friends again before all of us parted ways. Even some of my friends who aren’t members of the club volunteered for it and they loved it. It was great to be able to show our teachers that we appreciate all they have done for us this year; giving up an hour of my day was nothing compared to how much time they spend helping us out. It was probably one of the most rewarding things I have done for Key Club all year. I can’t wait until we get to do it again next year, and I hope anyone who couldn’t do it this year gets the chance to do it next year.

Adventures with Ronald McDonald

LEADERSHIP

The Ronald McDonald House food preparation event was a blast! The last day of school, four other Key Clubbers and I headed to the Ronald McDonald House to help the Kiwanis prepare chicken spaghetti and salad for families who had a child receiving medical treatment at Cook Children’s hospital. We were tasked with pulling chicken and mixing ingredients in a pot. By dinnertime we had made six commercial pans of chicken spaghetti. That was more than enough to serve all of the families that came through (about 40 meals were served). While working there I learned that the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House is a community kitchen. Families are allowed to eat from the nonperishable items in the pantry; they can also eat left over foods stored in the refrigerator. So far, this has been one of my favorite service projects I’ve done with Key Club. I encourage people to go to this event next time Kiwanis invites us!

SELFLESSNESS

After entering the parking lot through the exit, Ali, Diana, Jillian, and I met Janet, Junsung and the Kiwanis Club of Fort Worth at Dos Gringos to retell our experiences at DCON and hear about the latest service events we will be participating in for the next few months. We discussed providing service at events sponsored by Cook Children's and growing in our connections between Kiwanis and Key Club. Over delicious Mexican food, we had an enjoyable experience sharing insight and taking helpful advice. Overall, it ended up being a very successful, informative Kiwanis meeting that has helped to equip us for a summer full of service!
