3 A Note from Your President and Editor It’s been a great summer of Key Club so far! We've had some impactful service projects, as well as some fun socials, in June. The Teacher Ice Cream Social gave us the opportunity to give back to the faculty of our school, and the food bank and mobile pantry taught us about the desperate need for food in our community. In addition, the Park/Beach Clean-Up was a fun experience, and let us get to know some fellow Key Clubbers from other schools in the division. I look forward to seeing you all at the many events we still have planned this summer, and don’t forget to bring your friends! Yours in service, Page Trotter Hello, Key Clubbers! How's summer been? Has it been as wonderful and carefree as you'd hoped and imagined it to be? Are you utilizing your time wisely, or simply enjoying your short and sweet freedom from school? Though school is over, the need for volunteers for various service projects in our community has not died. So keep serving your hearts out while we don't have to worry about school or homework! A big, big thank you to all of you who went to projects and socials this past month, and an even greater thank you to those who took pictures and wrote articles. As I always say, this newsletter would not have been possible without you guys, and y'all are who make Key Club the great organization that it is. Yours Truly, Sue Youn Oh

Clean-Up Crew by Diana Lee

On Thursday June 25th, I went to the beach clean up to help out the Granbury Key Club. When I arrived, everyone waited for a few minutes until more people showed up, then started picking up trash around the lake. Some people brought trash bags and gloves to help out, and even the trash picker sticks from the Trinity Trash Bash, which made work easier for us. When we first looked around, I didn’t really see many large pieces of trash around. However, when we started picking up little pieces of trash with the help of children playing around the lake, we ended up collecting quite a bit of trash. After cleaning up around the lake, we all went to this park nearby to continue to pick up trash. I’m glad our Paschal Key Club could come and meet all the other Key Clubbers from North Crowley and Granbury, because it was so nice to talk to other Key Clubbers and discuss interclubbing and give each other some tips and ideas about fundraisers. I can't wait to hang out with other Key Clubbers by hosting an interclub social! Photos taken by Page Trotter

7 Banking at the Food Bank by Inho Kim

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of Tarrant Area Food Bank. Without volunteers, it would not be possible to respond to hundreds of hungry North Texans every day.” – Tarrant Area Food Bank website Paschal Key Club answered the call on June 22nd and helped sort out the charity items given to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. One of the Food Bank polices states that every item must be checked by a person before distribution, so every volunteer, including the regulars and other service groups, took up plastic gloves and went to work. The Food Bank was extremely precise and meticulous, with sections for inedible products (such as shampoo and deodorant), drinks containing certain ingredients, canned foods, and many more, such as snacks and condiments. Our Key Club volunteers were at first like fish wading into uncharted waters, but there were regular volunteers who had worked for years to help us. As we began to get used to it, others did too, and we were able to quickly and effectively sort items. While working at the food bank, I learned that some products are still edible long after their expiration date. It made me wonder if the expiration date was created with food banks in mind in order to provide meals to the hungry. In one session, volunteers were asked to check the zucchinis stored in the warehouse. These zucchinis were not "fresh from the store" zucchinis, but ones which had been stored for weeks. Surprisingly, most of the vegetables were fine with the exception of a few moldy ones that I cannot bear to describe in detail. This type of sorting could only be done by volunteers, not machines, and through the process, we were able to provide more food and satisfy the hunger of those who have fewer blessing than us.

8 Food for the Needy by Katie Balderston

The UCC Mobile Food Pantry is a wonderful organization that gives free food to the people who need it. I personally was able to volunteer myself at the site of the Wesley Center on June 27th and give out free food and help clean up. The people who come bring carts and/or tons of bags to carry all the fresh fruits and vegetables they got. Many people came as soon as it opened (at 8:00 a.m.) and usually the food distribution lasted until noon. Scores of people waited in line to come inside and obtain various food items such as cranberry juice, cabbage, corn, potatoes, etc.... Not many words can describe the great feeling you get from volunteering at the UCC Mobile Food Pantry. All the people are so polite and usually say thank you after they are given their food. However, because so many people to the food pantry, food runs out quickly. Only after the first hour, we were already out of zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, and ham. Everybody gets in line super early in order to get all the food they can before it runs out. My favorite part of the UCC food pantry is probably how it's all a volunteer-organized event. It's an incredible organization not only because it distributes free food to the community, but also because of its volunteers who freely offer their time.
