LOOKING BACK BEN FILLMORE
This institution has already entirely surpassed my expectations; the fact that people can get together each week and discuss nothing but others is truly amazing. Several people I know are self-centered, egocentric and not particularly charitable, but I have yet to meet someone like that in this club. This club manages to be a small, intimate group and still avoid coming across as esoteric, which is a very difficult quality to maintain.
PRESIDENT’S NOTE As we start our new year, we are trying to rally for more members to help. Even though we have a great number right now, there are always more people needed to serve and volunteer. We have many awesome upcoming events for the second half of our year which include the Cowtown Classic marathon which has been my favorite event since I started Key Club freshman year. It is an awesome feeling when the runners thank you for having water and cheering them on. There are many things to look forward to and I hope everyone had a great New Year’s! Your President, Katie Kroll

WHY WE LOVE BRAILLE ALI THORBURN
I have gone to Braille many times in the past few months and I really enjoy it. Once there were so many people that came we barely had enough jobs to keep everyone busy. Not only are we helping the blind., but we are giving them eternal salvation by giving them bibles to read. Going to Braille is fulfilling and I get many community service hours for doing something I enjoy. It is not just about giving the blind access to the bible but also about hanging out with friends and having fun doing something that is good for the community. Many people now a days feel that community service is boring and useless. But if they went to Braille I assure you that they would quickly realize their misconception.

WINTER SERVICE KATIE KROLL
Service is important all the time but especially in the winter/Christmas season. In Fort Worth if you drive a little bit north on I-35 from Paschal and you exit on Lancaster you can see an example of the poverty we experience in our city. Christmas is a time of cheer and family time, not a time when someone should be wondering where their next meal comes from. Helping out at Christmas time can not only warm the heart of the person or people you are helping but it can make you feel a great sense of joy when you see the happiness on their face. It reminds us that the reason for the season is giving, and volunteering at a soup kitchen or a food shelter is the best thing you could give.
Many people have family come visit during the holidays. Why not make it a family tradition that every Christmas you and your family go serve a meal or two at a soup kitchen? Even just gathering cans and donating them can make a difference. Shelters and soup kitchens always need donations of any kind. Since poverty is a reality that hits so close to home I challenge you to volunteer at least once a month with a shelter or soup kitchen and see what it can do for not only yourself but for people that you are serving.

CHAPEL HILL AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AMY BURDETTE
The Chapel Hill Academy is a local charter school that was founded by the Lena Pope Home to serve children with educational or financial disadvantages. The school teaches from pre-k up to 5th grade with a strong focus on helping each individual student with their personal needs. During my experience volunteering at CHA I got to see personally the ways in which the teachers put forth amazing time and care into each child to help them reach their full potential. My work there consisted mostly of sitting down and reading with individual children or helping them with spelling and math. It was amazing to see how much they improved throughout the year, and that all they really needed was some confidence, someone to sit down and help them read until they felt confident enough in themselves to do it on their own. The Chapel Hill Academy is a remarkable place where the children not only get to learn but also can join clubs and participate in many after school activities. The school’s unique approach to teaching on a very individual basis really helps the students there enjoy what they are learning. Volunteering there was an excellent way for me to see great things going on in the community for these children, especially since most of the children come from homes that can’t provide them with everything they need to develop, learn and grow. The Lena Pope Home and Chapel Hill Academy do so much in our community to support children and their needs and constantly need volunteers to come and help them to make each child feel loved and cared for, so anyone who has the opportunity to help out there should because I know that it taught me a lot and was a truly amazing experience.

MORE INFORMATION WHAT IS KEY CLUB?
DISTRICT CONVENTION
Key Club is an international organization with a mission to serve others. By being a part of Key Club at Paschal, you are given the opportunity to participate in service projects with friends and make a difference in your community. What could be better than helping others while having fun?
District Convention (DCON) is an event for the Texas– Oklahoma District to gather and learn more about Key Club, share experiences from the past year, and make more memories. From forums to banquets to caucuses and voting, DCON is an unforgettable experience. Sophomore Moni Gunderson revisits DCON from her Freshman year, “DCON was an action-packed, incredibly fun, unforgettable weekend experience. I had so much fun learning more about Key Club and meeting new people. I am so happy that I went and I am planning on going every year.” It’s never too early to think about DCON, which occurs around the beginning of April. Ask someone who has been about it, and start getting excited for 2014 District Convention!
