TEACHER ICE CREAM SOCIAL ZACH CRISTOL

Recently, I attended the annual teacher appreciation ice cream event. Seconds after finishing our finals, other fellow Key Club members and I rose up to the occasion to serve ice cream to show our appreciation towards teachers. It was truly great to see that even after a tiresome finals week, which exhausts both teachers and students, there are kids who can take time to thank their teachers for their hard work. It was evident that the teachers enjoyed our services. They grabbed their ice cream and some even got seconds. After lifting our teachers’ spirits, we enjoyed our own bowls of ice cream which made it that much better.

PRESIDENT’S NOTE While it is summer, there are still many opportunities for service. We still have our weekly service projects (Braille bibles and agape meal) that go on year round. I know people are really busy during the summer but there's always time to give an hour or two of your week to help the community. If anyone has parents that are involved with organizations or organizations that you are in yourself that could use our help please feel free to let me know. Our club is always looking for more ways to serve! Your President, Katie Kroll

UCC MOBILE FOOD PANTRY ABBEY JACKSON

This past week I went to mobile food pantry for the first time. When I first got there I was kind of unsure what to help out with, but I quickly found my place. There were two lines with items to distribute food to anyone who needed it. A lot of the people who went through the line also volunteered. Although it was hot, it was very worth it. I had such an amazing time and it was a wonderful experience! I can't wait to help with it next month. Not only did I make a difference in my community, I also met new people and had a great time.

KIWANIS MEETING JUNSUNG LEE

Walking into a room full of smiling people, I happily waved at the Kiwanis members and followed Katie, Jake, Abbey, and Zach to the end of the table where there were empty seats and bowls of warm tortilla chips waiting for us. Joining in on the conversation, we were updated with Kiwanis’s recent events and service projects, and told them about our plans to keep up our service in the summer. Then, a presentation was given about Braille Bibles and how they are made. We were even able to see the bibles in different languages such as Portuguese. It was a fascinating presentation that we all enjoyed, especially when we discovered that the AC in the Braille building is working! Overall, it was a fun way to spend my Monday evening.

“If you want to be an official Key Club member, hit me up with $15.”

SERVICE IN THE SUMMER SARIKA SABNIS

A day in the life of a summertime high school Key Clubber… Wake up, two in the afternoon. Roll out of bed, shield your eyes from the sun seeping through the windows, scoff down some “breakfast” – and yet another speech about bad habits from your well-meaning parents – take a trip outside, breathe in the heat, sing the lazy summer blues, and relax. What’s missing? Think, think…SERVICE! It certainly is not the first summer a Key Club has seen a minor struggle to stay true to service. What with half of the team vacationing around the world, and the other half receiving constant reminders of the first half ’s extraditions through their Instagram and Facebook updates, it is very easy for service to “stay on hold”. We’re high schoolers – it’s our natural tendency to want to give into laziness and lethargy during the summer. Some of the more motivated half of us try to add to the all-important resume by getting a job, or doing some summer internships. But we often lose sight of our commitment to service. The summer air, the deviation from your everyday routine, and coupled with the fact that you don’t recite the Key Club pledge every week – all of these things contribute to that decrease in number of service projects. But we made a promise. Take a leaf from the pledge, the very one that you may find so tenderly familiar now that it has been so many weeks. It was a promise to serve our community, and to combat all forces that tend to undermine those institutions. So step up to the plate. The community is never going to run out of chances to better itself, so as the active, willing, and hardworking Key Club members that we have pledged to be, it is our duty – nay, our calling – to lend a hand and keep serving. The biggest thing to keep in mind whenever you feel like a service project is within reach, but are too concerned about getting members to attend: just go for it! Never let your comrades forget the whole reason they joined Key Club in the first place – to serve! – and remind everyone about how wonderful they all felt the first time they did a service project. I guarantee even the summer blues won’t be able to hinder anyone after that.
