Animal Shelter One extremely hot Saturday morning in July (or just another average day by Texas summer standards), a group of 5 Key Clubbers met at a building in the middle of nowhere. The smell emanating inside the building was terrible and the high pitched noises arising from the inner rooms were harsh to the ears. The police man standing there handed the students only one thing- a rope, with which to do their work. This was the project at the local animal shelter. Located off a highway with nothing around it, the place seemed uninviting. But it was only once you went in and saw the dogs and the cats that you realized- here our service was truly needed
By: Amritha Gourisankar We were each given a leash to walk the dogs with. There were some that wanted to use their stored-up energy and some that were shy and wanted to stay in the safety of their cage. We also had the opportunity to take out some of the kittens and pet and play with them. The animal shelter is one service project that needs volunteers because it always has a lack of them. This service project is one that, although the message “Come back soon” couldn’t be said, the animals’ messages were clear as they were lead back to their cages reluctantly.

Volunteering at the the Animal Shelter
I volunteered at the Chuck Silcox Animal Shelter. At the shelter, Key Club worked to make sure the animals had exercise and interaction with humans. We played with cats and kittens and walked the dogs outside. Key Club did this event because helping out at the

animal shelter is a way to really see your service in action. Unlike other activities such as Braille Bibles or working at a run, our work at the shelter was immediately appreciated by the animals. I learned that it is really important to take time to volunteer because it’s rewarding and there are so many groups and organizations that
need help.
Don't know the Key Club pledge? No worries. Just follow along below: I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

Going Back To School Summer is ending extremely done several service projects and a couple of socials throughout the summer. The service projects include the weekly Braille Bibles, the animal shelter, the Back to School Shopping event, and several other service projects. At the beginning of the summer, we had an ice cream social, had a board
meeting, and even got to have a meeting with the lieutenant governor as well as meet with
other clubs throughout the district. As our relaxing but hot summer ends, there are many more service projects available for the new year such as Haunted House, Turkey Trot, and of course, the Parade of Lights.

Turkey Trot

CLUB LEADERSHIP President: Aashna Bhatia
Turkey Trot 2011 was one of the coolest service projects that I have ever attended. Our Key Club was responsible for keeping the runners hydrated and happy. We ran a water station that runners would often pass. It was a great way to get to know people in my community and other members that also participated in the project. I hope to volunteer at Turkey Trot 2012 this upcoming fall.
