Charles Noke revived the tradition of Staffordshire figure making in the 18 890s an 1890s and launched his famous HN series in 1913. Distinguished sculptors w were inv invited to contribute to the launch collection and the artisans of the P Potterie Potteries interpreted their diverse designs in earthenware and fine bone c china. Local artist Harry Tittensor proved to be both an exquisite painter and a ttalented modeler of early figurines.

lively description and illustration of Queen Elizabeth I being dressed with her Virago sleeves and Picadillie ruff provided the source material for A Lady of the Elizabethan Period HN40 by Ernest Light.
Ernest Light was a Stoke-on-Trent sculptor of some note and master in charge of the city’s school of art. As can be seen from Calthrop’s detailed illustrations, Light’s studies of A Woman of the Time of Henry VI HN43 and A Lady of the Georgian Period HN41 precisely portray the costumes of these bygone eras. His portrait of Lady Anne HN87 seems to have been influenced by Mary Young Hunter’s painting of the Duke’s High Dame of 1902. Production of these very early figures was extremely limited which makes them all very hard to find today.

Since the HN figure collection was launched, Royal Doulton artists have produced many designs which did not go into production for one reason or another. Usually the original clay model was approved for blocking and one or two figures were cast from the master-mold. There are many reasons why prototypes did not go into production. With highly complex and detailed models, the production costs were often too high for the pricing policies of the time. Sometimes management anticipated production problems during the kiln firing or shipping issues with damage in transit. Production capacity limited the number of new designs each year and occasionally the design director felt that there were duplications of subject matter in the range.

Very occasionally prototype figures by Leslie Harradine come on the market which is a rare treat for collectors as most of this versatile artist’s work went into production. In 1935, he modeled an unusual figure which has been called Marco Polo but was actually commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers in the City of London. Prior to the closure of the Nile Street factory in 2004 and the destruction of all the prototype molds, Doulton directors decided to produce a few figures in editions of just 3 pieces. Designs by leading artists of the past, such as Peggy Davies and Mary Nicoll, were chosen for decoration by the prestige artists and clearly marked. These special editions of three, which were taken from prototype molds, are dated on the bases 2004 or 2005 and numbered 1/3, 2/3 or 3/3. Friends and colleagues who remember Mary say that her work reflects her delightful personality, which was a unique blend of sympathy, tenderness, romance and humor, with a touch of lovable eccentricity. Perhaps these traits are most obvious in her studies of dear old ladies in their twilight years. In these and other figures, she displays a discerning eye for detail and delights in adding minute accessories. In her study Good Morning, a little bird waits eagerly for the breadcrumbs that the old lady is preparing. Initially this figure was fully glazed but it did not go into production in this form. Eric Griffiths, the Art Director, believed that intricate sculptural details were best shown in a matt finish and some of Mary’s later figures were introduced without a glossy glaze. Working Dogs Since medieval times, dogs have been kept to bait wild animals, pull carts, turn cooking spits and herd sheep and they still work with shepherds today. The figure of The Master by Peggy Davies was based on Peggy’s grandfather and illustrates the strong bond that exists between a shepherd and his dog. As indicated by its name, the German Shepherd was bred in Germany in the late 19th century to protect sheep. It became internationally renowned as a working dog after World War One for its intelligence, speed, strength and keen sense of smell. Rin Tin Tin was rescued from a battlefield by an American soldier and became a Hollywood star in 27 films. German Shepherd dogs became popular as pets in the 1920s as shown by the rare figurines Iona and Moira. Scotties is also

Prototypes and trials of character jugs are very rare. Most of the early designs by Charles Noke and Harry Fenton went into production, with a few exceptions notably the white Churchill prototype. During World War Two, there were several modeling variations which now intrigue collectors, such as the Hatless Drake. There were also modifications to colors which have created premium values for certain pieces, such as the Clown with red hair.
Churchill 1940 D6170 C. J. Noke H. 6 ½ in $5,900 Apparently Churchill did not like this portrait so it was withdrawn immediately.

Fortune Teller 1991 Fort F S S. JJ. T Taylor H. 7 in $2,950 The trial has a striped scarf and an ace of hearts playing card rather than a tarot card. The lion and crown backstamp appears on the base.
During the 1980s and 90s, Graham Tongue was in charge of the design studio for Royal Doulton character jugs and occasionally trial pieces come on to the market with his initials and stamp “GT Original Sample” or “Design Original Sample”. These colorways were reviewed at Royal Doulton Design Conferences and amendments were made to the decoration from time to time. Often metallic highlights, which required an extra firing, were eliminated to reduce the costs of the production version. 40

Americans have always been very influential collectors of Royal Doulton and so the leading artists created many subjects dear to their hearts. After living in the USA for 18 years, Harry Fenton was inspired to produce the first American character jug depicting Johnny Appleseed. The portrait of the American folk hero was introduced in 1953, shortly before Fenton died.
A Presidential Collection George Washington, the founding father of America, was Stan Taylor’s first character jug launched to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Washington’s birth in 1983. He added another portrait of the President towards the end of his modeling career. Taylor also contributed Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln to the jug George Washington 1995 D6965 S. J. Abigail Adams, wife of President John Adams, was the second First Lady of the United States and the first to reside at the White House in 1800. She is remembered for all the letters she wrote to her husband discussing intellectual matters, government and politics. Peggy Davies modeled Abigail in 1976 for a collection of Beauties of the World which did not go into production. In 2004, she was made in an edition of just three figurines and hand-painted by Royal Doulton’s prestige artists.
