Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. –R ac h e l C a r s o n

. GA RY’ S O N IO N . I spend much of my life by myself minutely studying things that most people rarely give a second look. It’s hard to turn this off, even when the day is done and I’m out socializing. I was at dinner at a friend’s house and went into the kitchen to help and was completely transfixed by this old, withering onion expiring there on the counter. The textures of the dried up paper greens sprouting from the decaying bulb made my fingers itch. Just then, my host reached for it, intending to chop whatever good might be left of it, into his cooking. I’m not quite sure how I managed the stay of execution, and I don’t really want to know what he actually thought, when he said, “Well sure, Pam, you can have it if you really want it. I don’t know why you want it, but go ahead, take it.” But, I was very pleased when he gave a print of this painting to his friend Gary, who grew the onion in his garden. – P.A. K e s s l e r
