yların onbirincisi kasım kimine göre kasvetin, kimine göre ise yağmurun ve fırtınanın tango yaptığı ateşli bir aydır. Kuzey Kıbrıs'ta kasım, pastırma yazın ara sıra yüzünüze gülümsediği bir ay olmakla birlikte, kavurucu yaz aylarının ardından hasretle beklenen bir aydır. Yağmur bu coğrafyada özlenen bir doğa olayıdır. Hele bir de hafif hafif çiseler ve nemlendirdiği toprak kokusuna çiçeklerin kokusu karışırsa, kasım; Kıbrıslılar için efkarın değil, mutluluğun hüküm sürdüğü bir aya dönüşür. Kasım; Kıbrıs için gökten bereketin aktığı, gelecek yazın kuraklığını kıracak yağmurun toprağa kavuştuğu bir aydır. Passatempo'nun bu sayısında adada meyveleri kasım ayında olgunlaşan bitkilerden “alıç”ı sayfalarımızda tanıttık. Ülkemizin en genç kadın moda tasarımcısı Tezel Ziya ile yaptığımız röportaj ve Tezel Ziya'nın Girne Cratos Premium Hotel'de yaptığı moda defilesi dergimize apayrı bir renk ve heyecan kattı. Spor sayfalarımızda ise Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi'nde “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” yapan Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Topluluğu'nu ağırladık. Kıbrıs ağzında “garga” olarak söylenegelen kargalar da dergimize bu sayı konuk oldular. Kıbrıs'taki tarihi Ermeni Manastırı'na ayırdığımız sayfalardan sonra, Danimarka'nın Kopenhag şehri ile İsveç'in Malmö kentini birbirine bağlayan Öresund Köprüsü'nün hikayesinin anlatıldığı sayfalarımız sizi adeta Kıbrıs'tan alıp İskandinavya'ya götürecek. Kıbrıs mutfak kültürünün eşsiz tadı “paluze” bu ayın “Kıbrıs Mutfağı” sayfalarını süslerken, Kuzey Kıbrıs'ın en önemli sanatçılarından Sezin Boğaç'ın heykelle danteli muhteşem bir uyumla birleştirdiği eserleri zihninizde yeni kapılar açacak. Kasım sayımızda Kıbrıs'a yüzyıllardır kök salan zeytin ağaçlarından ve Girne'de her sene düzenlenen Zeytinlik Festivali'nden bahsetmeyi de unutmadık. ovember, the eleventh month of the year, is a passionate month when according to some melancholy, or, according to others rain and storms, dance a tango. The month of November, during which hot days left over from the summer sometimes smile at you, is awaited with longing in North Cyprus after the broiling hot days of summer; rain is a natural phenomenon people in this geography eagerly look forward to. And if it there's a gentle drizzle and the scent of the flowers mingles with the scent of the moistened soil, November becomes a time when it is not melancholy, but happiness that fills the air. It is the month when abundance falls from above, and the rain that will overcome the drought of the next summer comes and meets the earth. In this issue of Passatempo we introduce the 'mayflower', a plant whose fruits ripen in November. Our interview with our country's youngest woman fashion designer,Tezel Ziya, and our piece on her fashion show at Kyrenia's Cratos Premium Hotel, add a different excitement and colour to our magazine. On our sports page we feature the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu society, which performs 'Brazilian Jiu Jitsu' at Eastern Mediterranean University. Crows, known as 'garga' in Turkish Cypriot dialect, are our invited guests in this issue. And after visiting the Armenian Monastery in Cyprus, you will be swept away from the island to Scandinavia, as you follow the story of the Öresund Bridge which connects the Danish city of Copenhagen to the city of Malmö in Sweden. Our Cypriot Cuisine section features 'paluze', a unique taste in Cypriot food culture; and you will see things from a different perspective when you encounter artworks by Sezin Boğaç, one of the most significant artists of North Cyprus, which bring together lace and sculpture in a spectacular harmony. And we haven't forgotten to stop by Kyrenia's annual Zeytinlik village festival, or to pause and look at the olive trees that have taken root in Cyprus for centuries... 988'de Lefkoşa'da doğan Tezel Ziya lise eğitiminin ardından 16 yaşında İngiltere'ye giderek, Manchester College of Art and Technology'de moda eğitimi gördü. Ardından İngiltere'de University of Northampton'da moda tasarımı okuyan Ziya, 5 sene boyunca moda eğitimi aldı. Üniversiteyi başarıyla bitiren Tezel Ziya İngiltere'de üniversiteler arasında yarışma düzenleyen ve değişik kategorilerde gelecek vadeden gençleri seçerek, bu gençlerin çalışmalarına tanıtım fırsatı yaratan meşhur internet sitesi eCreative'in 2010'da düzenlediği yarışmada moda kategorisinde 5 bin kişi arasından en iyi moda tasarımcıları arasına girdi.

orn in Nicosia in 1988,Tezel Ziya finished high school when she was 16 years old and went to England to study fashion at Manchester College of Art and Technology. She then went on to the University of Northampton, where she studied fashion design for five years. After completing her university education, Ziya was selected as one of the best fashion designers among 5,000 nominees in an inter-university competition in the UK in 2010; the competition, organized by the famous website e-Creative, selects young people with promise in different categories and creates an opportunity for them to introduce their work to the sector.

Üniversitenin ardından Kıbrıs'a dönen genç moda tasarımcısının Girne'deki Cratos Premium Hotel'de 22 Ekim Cumartesi akşamı “Güneşin Dansı” adıyla sunulan defilesi büyük ilgi gördü. Ülkemizin en genç moda tasarımcısının defilesi için Türkiye'den özel olarak gelen Ece Gürsel, Tuğçe Sarıkaya, Tuğçe Dural, Deniz Şimşek ve Ece Kartal'ın yanı sıra KKTC'den H & V Ajans'dan Ceyda Bahşi, Rita, Dasha, Yana ve Günkut Ajans'tan Ceyda Tatlı olmak toplam 10 manken podyumda Tezel Ziya'nın tasarladığı kıyafetleri tanıttı. Adem Kader Kumaş Mağazası, Bayramoğlu Ayakkabıları ve CyprusXP Group'un sponsorluklarında, Cratos Premium Hotel'in desteğiyle yapılan defilede Tezel Ziya'nın giysileri tasarım gücü ve birbirinden farklı dizaynları ile davetlilerin beğenisini kazandı. Yerel basınla birlikte Türkiye basınından Hürriyet Gazetesi magazin yazarı Onur Baştürk, Zarakol İletişim Hizmetleri'nden Esra Zarakol ve Posta Gazetesi yazarı Sayım Çınar'ın da izlediği defile basından oldukça olumlu tepkiler aldı.

On her return to Cyprus after her university education, this young fashion designer attracted considerable attention on the night of October 22nd when her fashion show, entitled 'the Dance of the Sun', was held at the Cratos Premium Hotel in Kyrenia. Ziya's designs were introduced on the catwalk by ten models: Ece Gürsel, Tuğçe Sarıkaya, Tuğçe Dural, Deniz Şimşek and Ece Kartal, who came especially from Turkey for this fashion show by our country's youngest fashion designer; Ceyda Bahşi, Rita, Dasha, and Yana from the H & V Model Agency; and Ceyda Tatlı from the Günkut Model Agency. The fashion show was sponsored by the Adem Kader Cloth Store, Bayramoğlu Shoes and the CyprusXP Group, and supported by the Cratos Premium Hotel. The audience showed their appreciation for Ziya's strong designs, each different in its own way; and the fashion show was well received by the local press as well as by Turkish journalists such as Onur Baştürk from Hürriyet Newspaper Magazine, Esra Zarakol from Zarakol Communication Service and Sayım Çınar from Posta Newspaper.

Modadaki trendleri takip etmek gerektiğine inanıyor musunuz?

Do you believe that fashion trends should be followed?

Benim için moda bu sezonun modası, şu sezonun modası gibi bir şey değil. Elbette trendler var ve modacılar her sene bir araya gelip, trendleri belirler ama herkesin bu trendlere uyması şart olmamalı. Herkes kendine yakışanı, özgürce giyebilmeli. Herkesin kendine özgü bir vücut şekli ve sadece kendisine has olan bir karakteri vardır. Giydiğimiz kıyafetlerle karakterimizi yansıtabilmeliyiz. Modadır diye bizim vücudumuza ya da karakterimize uyum sağlamayan giysileri tercih edersek, moda kıyafetler içerisinde olan biz olmayız. Kıyafet kişinin şahsiyetini mutlaka yansıtmalı. Sezonun trendi bizim benimsemdiğimiz veya bize yakışmayacağını hissetiğimiz bir trend ise moda olandan uzak durabilme cesaretini göstermek gerekir diye düşünüyorum.

For me, fashion doesn't mean this season's fashion, or that season's fashion. Of course there are trends, and every year fashion designers come together and determine the trends; but it shouldn't be compulsory for people to follow these trends. Everyone should wear whatever fits on him or her, freely. Everyone has a unique body type and personality, and we are able to reflect our character through our clothes. If we choose clothes that don't suit our body or personality just because they're the season's fashion, then we can't be ourselves in these fashionable clothes. Clothes definitely have to reflect a person's character. And I also think that if we feel the latest fashion trend is something we can't embrace, or that it won't suit us, we should have the courage to avoid it.

Kendi stilinizi yaratırken birçok şeyden etkileniyor olmalısınız...

You must be influenced by many things while you're creating your own style...

Gerçekten her şeyden etkilenebilirim. Dışarıda araba sürerken bir başka arabanın modelinden etkilenebilirim. Ya da değişik bir hayvan gördüğümde de ondan etkilenirim. Buna rağmen tasarım yaparken asıl üzerinde durduğum kendim giymeyi arzuladığım çizgileri yaratmaktır. Tasarladığım kıyafetlere kendi şahsiyetimi yansıtmak istediğim için yaptığım tasarımlarda en çok dikkat ettiğim şahsiyetimi ne kadar yansıttığımdır. Çünkü bana göre her gerçek modacı önce kendini giydirmeli ve kendi için yaptığını beğeniyorsa başkaları için giysi tasarlamalıdır. Yarattığınız marka sizin zevkinizi ve kişiliğinizi kesinlikle yansıtabilmeli ve farklı parçaları bir araya getirdiğinizde ortaya çıkanın sizin stiliniz olduğundan emin olmalısınız.

I really can be influenced by everything – by another car model when I'm driving, or when I see a different animal. But the main thing I emphasize when I'm designing is creating styles that I also want to wear. Because I want to reflect my personality in my designs, when I create them I pay the most attention to how much they reflect my character. Because from my point of view, every real designer should first design for herself or himself, and then, if she likes the clothes she's created , she should design for others. The brand that you create certainly has to reflect your taste and personality, and when you combine different pieces you have to be sure the result represents your style.

Kendinizi modada kabul ettirdiniz. Defilenizi Türkiye basınının önemli simaları da takip etti. Bundan sonrasında piyasaya açılacak mısınız? Piyasada kıyafetleriniz satılacaksa işe Kıbrıs'tan mı Türkiye'den mi başlamayı düşünüyorsunuz? Kuzey Kıbrıs'ta satın alınan kıyafetlerin neredeyse hepsi Türkiye'den geliyor. Benim kıyafetlerim de yurtdışı standartlarında. Sonuçta yurtdışında okudum. Ben “hot couture” yapıyorum. Yani hazır üretim mamülleri üretip, butik açmayı planlamıyorum. Bizim ülkemizde burada istediği tarzda kıyafet bulamayıp Paris'ten alışveriş yapanlar var. Özel tasarım giymek isteyen birçok kadın İstanbul'dan kıyafet alıyor. Kendi tasarımlarımı öncelikle Kıbrıs'ta pazarlayacağım. Çünkü kıyafet almak için yurtdışına giden pek çok kadının giymek isteyeceği, yurtdışı standartlarında özel tasarımlar yapıyorum. Kadınlarımızın yurtdışına gitmelerine gerek kalmayacak.

You've made your entrance into the fashion world, and the important names in the Turkish press watched your fashion show. Will you be on the market after this? If your clothes are sold in the market, will you start this in Cyprus or in Turkey? Almost all the clothes sold in North Cyprus come from Turkey. And my designs comply with international standards; in the end, I studied abroad, and I'm creating 'haute couture'. I mean, I'm not planning to produce ready-to-wear products and open a shop. There are people in our country who can't find clothes to suit their style and go to Paris to shop, and many women who want to wear haute couture buy clothes from Istanbul. So first I'll market my designs in Cyprus, because I'm creating special designs at international standards, and a lot of women who go abroad to buy clothes will prefer to wear my designs; it won't be necessary any more for our women to go abroad to shop.

Ya Türkiye pazarı? Türkiye pazarına girmeyi planlıyor musunuz?

And the market in Turkey? Are you planning to get into that?

Kıbrıs Türk pazarından sonra 1-2 sene içinde Türkiye pazarına açılmayı düşünüyorum. Şimdiden plan yapmak istemesem de Kıbrıs'ta yaşamaya devam edip, İstanbul'a gidip gelerek Türkiye pazarına açılmayı hedefliyorum. Sürekli İstanbul'a gidip gelerek, orada bir yer açmayı istiyorum. Ailem ve sevdiklerim burada. Dolayısıyla Kıbrıs'tan uzaklaşmadan İstanbul'da bir şeyler yapabileceğimi düşünüyorum. Benim için moda vazgeçilmez bir noktada. Gittikçe ilerleyerek, çok iyi bir marka olmayı amaçlıyorum. Yarattığım bir marka var. Ve kendi markamla artık piyasaya girme zamanının geldiğini düşünüyorum. Bundan sonrası benim için daha da iyi olacak açıkçası. Çünkü işin asıl zor kısmı geride kaldı.

After the Cyprus market, within one or two years I'm planning to get into the Turkish market. Although I don't want to make plans for that, I intend to continue living in Cyprus, and gradually get into the Turkish market, by visiting Istanbul regularly. As I frequently visit Istanbul, I want to open a store there; my family and the people I love are in Cyprus, so I'm thinking about doing something related to my profession in Istanbul, but without staying away from Cyprus. Fashion is an essential thing in my life, and I intend to be a very succesful brand, by steadily developing in my profession. There is a brand that I've created, and now I think it's time for me to get into the market with it. Actually, from now on things will be better for my career, because the really tough part of the work is now behind me.

Defiledeki tepkileri nasıl buldunuz?

What do you think of the reactions to your fashion show?

Çok sayıda kişinin defileye gelmesi beni gerçekten gururlandırdı. Defile sonrası görüştüğüm davetlilerin pozitif yorumları beni tarifsiz mutlu etti. Bu bir ilkti. İlk defile olmasından dolayı, tecrübesizliğimden ötürü bir hayli stres yaşadım ancak sonuçtan memnunum. Başta ailem olmak üzere organizasyonda emeği geçen herkese teşekkürü borç bilirim. Bundan sonrasında daha iyisini yapmak için vargücümle çalışmaya devam edeceğim.

I felt very honoured that a large number of people came to watch my show, and the positive comments of the guests whom I talked to after the show made me very happy. This was a premiere, and since it was my first fashion show and I was inexperienced, I was very stressed; but I'm satisfied with the result. I'm very thankful, especially to my family and to everyone who contributed to the organization. I'll keep working with all my strength to do better in the future.

levkayası, bir zamanlar bu ülkenin cennet köşelerinden biriydi… Hala öyle… Piknikçilerin gözdesiydi; belki yine en güzel piknik noktalarından biridir ama bu açıdan eski değerini biraz yitirdiğini söylersek, yanlış demiş olmayız… Alevkayası'nın birkaç kilometre kuzeyinde, Beşparmak Dağları'nın kuzey yamaçlarında ne yazık ki “koruyamadığımız” muhteşem bir tarihi eser yatar… İşte bu tarihi eser; Sourp Magar ya da St. Makarius Manastırı dediğimiz yapı ya da yapılar bileşkesidir… Kıbrıslı Türk yazar-tarihçi Bener Hakkı Hakeri'ye göre bu manastır, Orta Çağ'da Mısır Hristiyanlarının Koptik topluluğu tarafından, ermiş St. Makarius (İ. S. 309-404) adına inşa edildi. Yine Hakeri'ye göre “Sourp Magar”, St. Makarius'un Ermenice karşılığıdır. 1425'ten 1974'e kadar bu mekan Ermenilerin elindeydi. Koptiklerin yaptığı ilk manastır, 1425'ten sonra sürekli olarak Ermenilerin kullanımlarında kaldı.

he Alevkayası area in the mountains used to be, and still is, one of the heavenly corners of this country... It was the favourite spot for picnickers; and perhaps it's still one of the most beautiful picnic areas, but in this sense one might say it's lost some of its old importance... A few kilometres north of Alevkayası, on the northern skirts of the Fivefinger Mountains, there's a spectacular historical site which, unfortunately, we haven't been able to preserve... This site contains the remaining parts of the structure or structures that we call Sourp Magar, or the St. Makarius Monastery... According to Bener Hakkı Hakeri, a Turkish Cypriot historian and writer, this monastery was built in the Middle Ages by a community of Egyptian Coptic Christians, to honour the name of St. Macarius of Egypt (ca.300–391), an Egyptian Christian monk and hermit. And according to Hakeri, 'Sourp Magar' is the Armenian version of St. Macarius. From 1425 to 1974, this space belonged to Armenians; the first monastery built by Coptic Christians, it was in continuous use by the Armenians after 1425.

Bu manastırın, İngilizlerin adaya egemen olduğu 1878-1960 dönemi içerisinde üç yıl kadar (1895-1897 yıllarında) yazlık konukevi olarak kullanıldığı söyleniyor. Osmanlı döneminde, vergi bağışıklığı verilen manastır, kapılarıyla pencerelerinin mavi boyalı oluşundan Mavi Manastır adıyla da anılmaktaydı.Hakeri'nin verdiği bilgilere göre, İstefanus (Stephanus) Lusignan adlı tarihçi, 1572 yılında burası ile ilgili şunları yazmıştı: “Koptiklerin Lefkoşa'da yaşayan bir piskoposları vardır. It is reported that during the period when the British ruled the island (1878-1960), the monastery was used as a summer residence for three years, from 1895 to 1897. During the Ottoman period, the monastery, which was granted tax exempt status, was called the Blue Monastery because of its blue painted doors and windows. Hakeri tells us that in 1572, a historian named Stephanus Lusignan wrote this about the monastery: 'The Coptic Christians have a bishop, who lives in Nicosia. They also have a monastery, which they call Saint Machaire, located on the mountains in the north close to the village of Pilatani (Bladan, Çınarlı), and this monastery is under the authority of Armenians'. It is also known that the ruined church located within the monastery premises, which was very important to the Armenians, was built in 1811-1814; a large part of it was destroyed in the course of time because of earthquakes. Our community refers to the Sourp Magar Monastery as the 'Armenian Monastery'... The monastery was left abandoned for many years, until at one point a cafe was set up there, and it was opened to visitors... This place, where young people sometimes come on camping trips, is known for its wonderful atmosphere...

It's very sad that a significant monastery like this can remain in ruins... Like many churches, monasteries and other holy places, the Armenian Church has also been seriously plundered, and a great many experts on tourism say that it's vital to take precautions against this continuing... Sourp Magar is one of the places in the TRNC that one has to see...

emp, Temros, Temploz… Venedik haritalarında ise Tempia, Temlu, Pempue ve Templos. Şimdilerde ise, köyün girişindeki ve çevresindeki bakımlı, verimli zeytin ağaçlarının görüntüsünden esinlenerek olsa gerek artık Zeytinlik köyü olarak belleklerimizde yerini almıştır. Zeytinlik köyünün konumunu, St. Hilarion Kalesi ile Girne Kalesi arasında sanki bir köprü, kuzeydeki deniz ile güneydeki Beşparmak Dağları'na kadar uzanan bir orta direk olarak tanımlayabiliriz. Zeytinlik köyü Templer Şövalyelerinin XII. yüzyılın sonlarında yerleştiği bir köydür. Zeytinlik köyüne Templerden sonra Lüzinyanlar, Venedikliler ve daha sonra da Osmanlılar egemen oldu. Osmanlılar ile birlikte Türkler de bu köye yerleşti.

emp, Temros, Temploz… And in Venetian maps it appears as Tempia, Temlu, Pempue and Templos: today we know it in our minds, probably inspired by the appearance of the well-maintained and fruitful olive trees at the entrance and the area around the village, as the village of Zeytinlik (Olive Grove). We could describe the place where Zeytinlik is located as being like a bridge between St. Hilarion Castle and Kyrenia Castle, and also like a mainmast that stretches to the sea in the north and to the Fivefinger Mountains in the south. At the end of the 12th century the Knights Templar settled in Zeytinlik, and after them the Lusignans, the Venetians, and then the Ottomans took control of the village. The Turkish community settled in this village during the Ottoman period.

Festivaller Kuzey Kıbrıs'ın vazgeçilmezleridir. Önceleri panayır olarak adlandırılan geleneksel eğlenceler günümüzde festival olarak sürdürülmektedir. Genellikle bölgelerde üretilen ürünlerin adını taşıyan festivallerde o ürünlerden imal edilmiş genelde ev yapımı- yiyecekler sergilenmekte ve satılmaktadır. Bu sene 10'uncusu düzenlenen Zeytin Festivali de içeriğinin zenginliğinden dolayı adanın önemli festivallerinden biridir. 49 Ekim tarihleri arasında düzenlenen festival Zeytinlik köy meydanında zeytin yaprağı tütsüsünün yakılması ile başladı. Festival etkinlikleri arasında; halk dansları gösterisi, Ankara Soğuk Heykel Atölyesi Sanat Gösterisi, tanınmış yazarlardan kitap tanıtımı ve söyleşi, çocuklar için gösteriler gibi çeşitli etkinliklerin yanı sıra her akşam köy meydanında tanınmış sanatçıların konserleri de vardı.

Festivals are an essential part of life in North Cyprus; traditional entertainment events which used to be called 'panayır' (funfairs) are now being organized in the form of festivals. These festivals are named for the main products of an area, and items made from these products, particularly food items (generally homecooked) are displayed and sold at them. The Olive Festival is one of the most significant festivals on the island, because of the rich variety of its events. The tenth Olive Festival was organized this year, during 4-9 October, and it started with the traditional burning of olive leaves in Zeytinlik Village Square. The festival featured a range of events such as folk dancing performances, an art demonstration by the Ankara Cold Sculpture Studio, book launches and conversations with well-known writers, and shows for children. Concerts by famous singers were also held in the village square every night for the duration of the festival.

In addition to the various souvenirs unique to the island that were displayed in the stalls, olives, olive oils and natural soaps were a pleasant sight. People enjoyed themselves watching young people dressed as Knights Templar wandering around the square, and clowns, who made children laugh and playfully ran after them. The food and drink section was like a totally different world... Magarına-bulli (macaroni with chicken), various Turkishstyle pancakes, pastries in sugar syrup, bulgur köftesi (mincedmeat lozenges fried in wheat), lokma (yeast fritters in thick syrup), halloumi bread, olive bread... there were too many things to count, and it made you realize what a wide range of food this island has. The festivals in North Cyprus are merry events; they are meeting-places for people who can't see each other frequently, and places filled with smiling, happy faces. razilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ for short), an art of defence which started in the Amazon forests and became popular first in America and then worldwide, can trace its roots back to Japan.

Japonya yüzyıllar boyu samurayların egemenlik sürdüğü bir ülke oldu. Çocukluğundan itibaren savaşçı olarak yetiştirilen bir genç samuray henüz kılıç kullanmakta ustalaşmadan önce silahsız dövüşmeyi ve kendini korumayı yani jujutsu sanatını öğreniyordu. 19. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Japonya'nın kapılarını modern teknolojiye açmasıyla samuray efsanesi ve onların gelenekleri bir bir yok oldu. Dönemin ünlü eğitimcilerinden Jigoro Kano (1860-1938) jujutsu sanatını kendi adıyla (Kano jiujitsu) yaşatmaya devam etti ve ölümünden önce dünyaya olimpik bir spor olan judoyu kazandırdı.

Japan is a country where the samurais ruled for centuries. A young samurai, raised as a warrior from childhood, would first learn to fight without using a weapon and to protect himself; that is, he learned Jiu-Jitsu before becoming skilled in using a sword. Towards the end of the 19th century, after Japan opened its doors to modern technology, the samurai legends and traditions gradually disappeared. Jigoro Kano (1860-1938), one of the famous masters of his period, continued the tradition of the art of Jiu-Jitsu under his name (Kano jiu-jitsu), and before his death he developed and gave the world Judo, which is now an Olympic sport.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu'nun hikayesi, Mitsuyo Maeda isimli Japon judo ustasının gösteri yapmak için geldiği Brezilya'da iş insanı Gastao Gracie'nin oğullarına politik bir jest olarak ders vermesiyle başlar. Gracie ailesi sonraları Rio de Janeiro'da Academia Gracie de Jiu-Jitsu Okulu'nu açar. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is

The story of Brazilian jiu-jitsu starts with a judo master named Mitsuyo Maeda, who goes to Brazil to give a performance, and as a political gesture, teaches the art to the sons of a Brazilian businessman, Gastao Gracie. Afterwards, the Gracie family opens a Jiu-Jitsu school at the Academia Gracie in Rio de Janeiro. While working out in this school with his siblings, Helio Gracie (1913-2009), the youngest child of the family, changes some of the movements which are difficult to apply and develops new techniques, using such principles as intelligence, timing and leverage instead of strength, speed and athleticism; in a short time he assumes the title of 'grand master'. The new techniques developed by Helio Gracie, who is considered a national hero in Brazil, make up today's BJJ art of defense.

Çoğu dövüş sanatında var olan gösterişli hareketler ya da öğrenmesi ve ustalaşması uzun yıllar alan fiziksel gereklilikler yerine, gerçekçi ve basit tekniklerden oluşan BJJ, öğrencisine öncelikle fiziksel saldırıları engellemeyi, sonrasında rakibi eklem kilitleri ya da boğma teknikleri ile etkisiz hale getirmeyi öğretir. Instead of depending, as is the case in many fighting arts, on showy movements, or on the physical development which take years to learn and become skilled at, BJJ consists of simple, practical techniques, teaching the student first to ward off physical attacks, and then to render an opponent harmless using joint locks or suffocation techniques. The simplicity of practicing and learning this sport has made it very popular, particularly among women, children and young people.

Tam anlamıyla bir savunma sanatı olan BJJ için aynı zamanda sportif amaçlı olarak Amerika, Avrupa ve Asya'da büyük ölçekli uluslararası turnuvalar düzenlenmektedir. Farklı seviye, yaş, kilo ve cinsiyet kategorileri tüm BJJ öğrencilerinin yarışmalarda mücadele edebilmesine olanak sağlamaktadır.

Large-scale, international sports tournaments are organized in America, Europe and Asia for BJJ, which is essentially an art of defense,. Different level, age, weight and gender categories in BJJ make it possible for all BJJ students to participate in these competition.

ıbrıs'ta karşınıza sıkça çıkan hayvanlardan bir tanesi de şüphesiz kargadır. Karga, kargagiller (corvidae) familyasının corvus cinsinden, iri yapılı, pençeli, düz gagalı, tüyleri çoğunlukla parlak siyah renkte olan kuş türlerinin ortak adıdır. Karganın sesi, cüssesine göre hayli güçlü ve rahatsız edicidir. Kendilerine has seke seke, sevimli denilebilecek bir yürüyüşleri vardır.

THE CROWS OF CYPRUS

ne of the animals that you come across frequently in Cyprus is the crow. 'Crow' is the common name given to birds of the genus 'corvus' in the crow (corvidae) family, which are stocky with claws and flat beaks, and usually have shiny black feathers. The sound crows make, if you consider their size, is very powerful and disturbing. And they have a cute, hopping style of walking.

Mitolojilerde kargalar uzun ömürlülüğün sembolü olmuşlarsa da gerçekte bir karganın ömrü ortalama 30-40 yıl arasında değişmektedir. Bilindiği gibi kargalar, buldukları hemen her şeyi yemekle meşhurdurlar. Fare, böcek, kurt, leş, mısır, ceviz en fazla tükettikleri besinlerdir.

Although in mythology crows symbolize long life, in fact the average lifetime of a crow varies between 30-40 years. As is well known, crows are famous for eating almost everything they find; mice, beetles, worms, carrion, corn and walnuts are the types of food they eat most frequently.

Crows have been killed throughout history because they destroy crops. However, scientific research has shown that crows consume insects that damage crops, so the benefits they provide to crops are much greater than the harm they do.

Dünya çapında yüzlerce karga türü bulunmaktadır. Kıbrıs'ta en fazla karşılaşılan türler ise “bayağı karga”, “leş kargası” ve “saksağan”dır. Yine adada kargaların budala olduğuna dair yanlış bir izlenim vardır. Karga, yapılan son araştırmalara göre en zeki canlılardan biridir. Bir midye ya da cevizi kırmak için gagası ile onu yükseklere kadar uçurur ve yere bırakır. Besinin kabuğu kırılana kadar da bu işlemi bıkmaksızın tekrarlar. Sürü halinde yaşayan bu hayvanlar, kendilerine bir saldırı olduğu zaman tek bir vücut olup saldırıya geçerler. Bu nedenle bir kargaya saldırmadan önce iki kere düşünmenizi tavsiye ederiz. Kargalarla ilgili yapılan araştırmalarda bu hayvanların olağanüstü bir hafıza ve intikam duyguları olduğu saptanmıştır.

There are hundreds of different kinds of crows around the world. In Cyprus, the most commonly found species are the 'common raven', the 'carrion crow' and the 'Eurasian magpie'. And there's a mistaken impression on the island that crows are stupid animals. According to recent research, the crow is one of the most intelligent living creatures. If a crow wants to break open a mussel or a walnut, for example, it picks it up with its beak, flies up to a height, and then drops it; the bird repeats this tirelessly until the shell breaks. These birds live in flocks, and if they are attacked, they join together and attack in a body. So you would be well advised to think twice before attacking a crow. Research done on crows has shown that these animals have exceptional memories and feelings of revenge.

According to a tale we heard from our grandmothers when we were children, if you cut a crow's tongue and feed it sugar for forty days, at the end of this period the crow will start to talk. Although it's true that if you cut a crow's tongue it starts to imitate human voices, we can't really think of this as meaningful speech, and in any case, you don't need to feed it sugar for this.

According to an old superstition, the souls of people who commit suicide are trapped in the bodies of crows. There are still beliefs among the American Indians that crows are kinds of shamans that see into the future.

Kıbrıs'ta Mağusalılara halk arasında “gargacı” denilmektedir. In Cyprus, among the people of Famagusta, the word for crow ('karga') is pronounced 'gargacı'.

Alıç Toplama Mayflower-picking Mevsimi Season Gürkan Uluçhan

he mayflower is one of the most significant endemic trees in Cyprus. I can still remember the days in my childhood, when as a family we made use of an old linen sheet to pick mayflowers, especially during October-November. Because the mayflower is a thorny tree and it's difficult to pick the fruit one by one, we would spread an old linen sheet on the ground under the tree, shake the tree lightly, and then pick up the fruit.

Bu faydalı bitki, gülgiller (rosaceae) familyasının crataegus cinsinden gelmektedir. Ada genelinde yaygın olan bu ağacın meyvesi çekirdekli, etrafı etlidir. Görüntü itibarıyla minyatür bir elmayı andıran meyvenin olgunlaşma zamanı ekim-kasım aylarıdır. Genellikle meyveler sarı renkli olup ender rastlanmakla birlikte kırmızı da olabilir. Meyvenin kendine has ekşimsi bir tadı vardır. Alıç, çiçekleri ve meyvesi ile güzel görünümlü bir bitki olduğu için adada süs bitkisi olarak da yetiştirilmektedir.

This useful plant belongs to the genus crataegus, in the family rosaceae. Its fruit, which are commonly found around the island, are seed-bearing and fleshy, and resemble miniature apples; they ripen during October-November. Although the fruit are generally yellow, on rare occasions they may be red; they have a unique, sourish taste. Because it has an attractive appearance with its flowers and fruits, the mayflower is also grown as a ornamental plant on the island.

As a herb, mayflower is known especially for effects such as balancing the rhythm of the heart and blood pressure, being good treatment for hardening blood vessels, and inducing calm; with its fruit and its roots, this plant has been used in medicine since the Middle Ages. It is generally consumed on the island in the form of preserves; mayflower preserve has a unique flavour and smell, and is one of our favourite tastes, especially during the winter.

Olgunlaşan alıcın meyveleri toplanıp temizlenir ve iyice yıkanır. Çekirdekleri ile birlikte pişene kadar kaynatılır. Sonra ezilip püre haline getirilir. Süzgeçten süzülerek çekirdeklerle kabuklar ayrılır. Daha sonra pelte alınır ve şeker konulup iyice karıştırılır. Altı saat kadar bekletilir. Sonra kısık ateşe konur, kıvamına gelinceye kadar kaynatılır. Alıç reçelinin kıvamı, kaşığa alındığı zaman akmayacak duruma gelmesi (jöle kıvamı) olarak kabul edilir. Misafirlere ikram edildiği gibi, sabah kahvaltılarında da kullanılır.

The ripe fruits of the mayflower are picked, cleaned and properly washed, and then boiled with their seeds until they are cooked. They are then mashed up into a purée, and the seeds and the peel are separated by draining them through a strainer. The resulting mash is mixed with sugar, stirred well, and left to stand for about six hours. It is then cooked on low heat until the syrup starts to thicken; the ideal consistency for mayflower preserves is considered to be when the syrup thickens to the point where if it is picked up with a spoon, it sticks and doesn't fall off. The preserves are offered to guests, and are also often eaten as part of breakfast.

hroughout history, bridges have been the subject of love stories. The most enjoyable spaces for secret meetings, for exchanging glances with someone as you quickly pass them, they show their connecting nature by bringing together not only lands, but also lovers.

Kuzey kıyılarının iki aşığı, binlerce yıl önce ayrı düşmüşler. Deniz girmiş aralarına, karalar uzaklaşmış birbirinden, uzaklaştırmışlar aşıkları. Ancak arada gidip gelen gemilerle yakınlaşabilirlermiş. Günümüze kadar sürmüş bu hasret, sadece onlar için değil, çevresindekiler için de katlanılabilir bir durum değilmiş bu ayrılık. Konumuz iki aşık şehir. Kopenhag ve Malmö. Uzaklığı yok ederek bakarlarmış birbirlerine, hasretle. Kopenhag güneşin pek bir yakıştığı şehir; Malmö ise sakin, huzurun, derli topluluğun simgesi. Her iki şehrin de deniz kıyılarında ise dizginlenemez bir coşku hemen fark edilirmiş. Kopenhag her bir köşesinden ayrı bir tınının sizi kendisine çektiği melodik şehir. Karşınıza rock da çıkabilir, klasik müzik de. Her birinin ayrı bir müdavimi, ayrı bir sefa süreni var. Thousands of years ago, two lovers on the northern shores were separated from each other. The sea came between them, the shores receded away, and the lovers were drawn apart. They were only able to become close through the ships that came and went. This longing has continued up until today; and the separation has been unbearable, both for them and for those around them. Our subject is two cities in love with each other: Copenhagen and Malmö. They used to look at each other with longing, as though there were no distance between them. Copenhagen is a city well suited to the sun; and Malmö is quiet, a symbol of peace and order. And at first glance from the shores, there is a noticeable and unrestrainable enthusiasm to both cities. Copenhagen is a city of melodies, with different tones coming out of each corner of it. Here you will find rock as well as classical music, each attracting its own followers and aficionados. The sun begins to paint the city with light, shadows and light play tag along your path, the liveliness of the city begins to affect you, and you find youself enjoying the eternal freedom of walking. And here it is: the Nyhavn pier area, where a colourful pastel view welcomes you. It's crowded but it doesn't make you tired. And now you're in the street which is the symbol of the city, where the colourfulness of the houses transports you to a world of toys and playthings, as if they aren't real. Watching the people passing through the street is enough to give you pleasure, as you drink a cold beer, or a coffee with an aroma that

evaporates away all your weariness. After a while you see the 'match-seller girl' coming around the street corner, with 'the ugly duckling' following her: the lives within the fabulous houses also begin to turn into fairy tales, and the characters from the world-famous children's stories, which Anderson wrote at the end of the 1800s, pass before you, one by one. You smile as you fall under their spell, and realize that you're not alone: it was here, in these streets, that Andersen wrote the stories which would be read by many, perhaps all the writers who would come after him; and just thinking about this gives you a feeling of excitement. After that, naturally, Shakespeare comes into the picture: no one knows if it's because Hamlet was from this land, or because he's associated with Andersen, but the master of literature has to be mentioned here. The Tivoli Gardens show us that the city still continues to follow Anderson's path through that fabulous world. It isn't easy to get away quickly from this realm of fables, where events range from concerts to all kinds of other entertainment, because it has such a richness to it, a richness that began in the years when Andersen lived here, which is still here, and which makes it possible for people of all ages to enjoy themselves.

Kopenhag için hüznün simgesi oluvermiş. Ama bu küçük heykel insanın içinde bir kavuşamama öyküsü oluşturuyor kendiliğinden. Ve Malmö. Yüzyıllarca Danimarka'nın en büyük şehirlerinden biri olur. Actually, it upsets you that the symbol of such a city, and which has been so much a part of history, is still a fifteen-year old statue – the 'Little Mermaid' statue, a little over a metre high, that sits on a rock in the sea, and suddenly becomes a symbol of melancholy for Copenhagen... But this little statue on its own also creates a story of separation in your heart... And then there's Malmö, which for centuries has been one of the largest cities in Denmark. Of all the countless walled fortresses which were built during its history, the only one that has survived is Malmöhus. When you wander around its streets you feel the city's tranquillity: maybe this is because the city couldn't decide which region to be part of, or maybe because it's somewhat of a city of migrants, and it's one of the places that was most rapidly influenced by the reform movements of the Middle Ages. As a result of all these developments, the city became part of Sweden, and even though Denmark wanted and used all its power to try and get it back, the city could not be retaken. This was the period that inflamed the love between Copenhagen and Malmö; their failure to rejoin rekindled their love even more. These two lovers are unable to come together any more, and their failure to meet, which lies beneath their true love, has become the most powerful bond between them. It's also interesting that Europe's second highest residental building, the 'Turning Torso' with its twisting architecture, lies in this city, providing a contrast with its historical streets. The statues that stand around in the streets, the cats sleeping or sitting around, all emphasize the bond between Malmö and the fine arts, and the close relationship of its inhabitants to art.

İstemeden de olsa ayrılan bu aşıkları günümüz teknolojisi birleştirmiş. Farklı ülkelerde olmak bile bu aşkın kavuşmasını engelleyememiş ve araya kurulan Öresund Köprüsü ile birleşmiş aşıklar. Bir yanıyla da yıllar önce ülke değiştiren Malmö kaderine karşı çıkar şekilde, pasaportun bile sorulmadığı bir yer haline gelmiş. Köprüden geçerken sığ sularında yükselen rüzgar santralleri, insana kurgu ve gerçeküstü bir öğe gibi geliyor. Bu santrallerin Malmö ile Kopenhag'ın isimlerini fısıldayarak ve iki şehrin birbirleriyle konuşmasını sağladığını düşünerek ölümsüz bir aşka tanık oluyor insan. İki şehir, bir köprü, bir deniz. Oralarda yaşayan, oralardan geçen milyonlarca insan, biraz dikkatli baksalar iki şehir arasında var olan yapboza benzer durumu fark edebilirler. Deniz onları uzaklaştırmış, onlar ısrarla aynı yerlerde yaşamaya devam etmişler. Sonra tarih onları yeniden ayrı tutmuş ve coğrafyalarını değiştirmiş. Ama yine yılmamışlar bir şekilde birleşmişler. Today's technology has finally brought together these lovers who were once forced to part. Not even their being in different countries could prevent the reuniting of these lovers and their love, across the Öresund Bridge that was built between them. Even crossing this bridge which unites the two countries, the longest bridge in the world, is like wandering at the extremes of technology. The Copenhagen side is connected to the bridge by a tunnel with no connection to the land; the bridge was designed with both a highway and railway, and it also has an undersea tunnel which is as famous as the bridge itself. The undersea tunnel, built very close to the seafloor, really shows how far engineering has come in recent times. This is Öresund Bridge: a place of fascination, meaning, and unification, where you can watch the play of colours of the sunset and sunrise with the greatest pleasure. On one side, Malmö, which years ago changed its country, has become a place where there isn't even passport control, as if the city is arguing against its own fate. As you pass over the bridge, wind turbines rise up from the shallow water like fictional and surreal elements, and you become witness to an immortal love as you imagine these wind turbines are whispering the names of Copenhagen and Malmö, helping the two cities to talk to each other. Two cities, a bridge, and a sea. The millions of people who live in and pass by these places – if they look carefully – can see the jigsaw puzzle-like relation between the two cities: first the sea separated them, and they persisted in living in the same places; then history kept them apart and changed their geographies. Despite all, they didn't waver, and eventually, somehow, they became unified. The Öresund Bridge rose between them, as a veil of love.

If Andersen had written a fable like this, people would have said, 'this is nonsense, how could this be possible?' Perhaps for this reason, who knows, they found this bridge tale by Andersen afterwards, and then brought it to life... and that's why the Öresund Bridge appeared?

Andersen böyle bir masal yazsaydı, “yazar saçmalamış, böyle masal mı olurmuş” denirdi. Belki de o nedenle Andersen'in yazdığı bu köprü masalını sonradan bulup hayata geçirmişler ve ortaya Öresund Köprüsü çıkmış, kim bilir?

Kuzey Kıbrıs'ın dağ yollarında, ovalarında hatta bahçelerinde adaçayı, biberiye, lavanta, nergis, fesleğen, defne, alıç, kekik, nane, okaliptüs gibi bitkileri taze ve doğal olarak görebilirsiniz. Bahçeden koparılıp taze taze demlenen bir adaçayının veya biberiyenin tadını poşet çaylarında bulmak mümkün değildir tabii. Biraz da bu bitkilerin faydalarından söz edelim. n recent years, drinking tea made from the herbs generously provided by nature has become one of life's essential pastimes. Today you can choose your favorite taste from the range of herbal teas that appear on supermarket shelves. And it's really a pleasure to sit in front of the television on a cold winter's day and sip a healing linden-cinnamon-apple tea that warms you deep inside. You can see plants such as fresh sage, lavender, narcissus, basil, bay, mayflower, thyme, mint and eucalyptus growing naturally on the sides of mountain roads, in fields, and even in gardens in North Cyprus. Of course, from a teabag it's impossible to get the taste of brewed sage or rosemary that's picked fresh from the garden. But let's look now at some of the benefits of these plants. Sage tea: In addition to its antiseptic features, it increases immunity, has a calming effect, relieves nausea, and is also good for the skin.

Okaliptüs yaprakları doğrudan kaynatılarak kullanıldığı gibi, yağının tıpta da pek çok faydaları vardır. İyi bir bitki çayı yapmak için suyun derecesinin 80'i geçmemesi gerekir. Fazla sıcak su, bitkinin tüm faydalı vitaminlerini yok eder. Bardağın üzerini bir tabakla veya havluyla kapatıp 3-5 dakika beklemeye bırakmak çayı daha kaliteli yapar.

Rosemary tea: Because it stimulates the digestive system, it is a diuretic and relieves constipation. Mayflower tea: This is good for heart flutters, calms the nerves, and strengthens the heart. Bay leaf tea: This brings down fevers and stimulates the appetite; it's also a diuretic, and helps to regulate menstruation. Narcissus tea: Dried flowers of this plant have a calming effect; the tea is also used to bring down fever, and as a purgative. Eucalyptus tea: This relieves coughs, helps get rid of throat and nose infections, and cleans the urinary tract. It can also be applied externally on the skin as an antiseptic. And as eucalyptus leaves can be boiled and used immediately, the oil has many uses in medicine. To make a good herbal tea, the water temperature shouldn't be above 80 degrees. If the water is too hot, it destroys all the valuable vitamins in the herb. If a saucer or tea-towel is placed on top of the teacup and it is left for 3-5 minutes, the quality of the tea improves.

ylül, ekim ayları bir başka heyecan kaplar Kuzey Kıbrıs'ı ve insanlarını. Hemen hemen her bahçedeki asmaların üzümlerini toplama zamanı gelmiştir. Tatlı bir heyecandır bu… Aynı zamanda yorucu geçecek olan birkaç haftanın da habercisidir çünkü toplanan üzümlerden paluze, sucuk, köfter, pestil, pekmez yapılacaktır. Evlerdeki hareket, sabahın erken saatlerinde başlar. Yem torbalarının içine yıkanan üzümler konur; ayaklarına çizmelerini giyen erkek ve kadınlar özel olarak alınmış küvetin içinde adeta dans edermişçesine, ritmik hareketlerle üzümleri ezer ve suyunu çıkarırlar.

PALUZE

uring September and October, a different excitement is felt in North Cyprus and in the hearts of its people. It's time to pick grapes from the vines that are found growing in almost every garden. This is a sweet excitement... and it's also an sign that the next couple of weeks will be tiring, because the juice of the grapes will be used to make paluze (blancmange with grape juice), starch grape molasses, kofter (a sweet made of starch and boiled-down grape juice), pestil (dried fruit roll-up), and grape molasses. The activity in houses starts early in the morning. Washed grapes are put into fruit sacks; and men and women, who have put on boots for this, get into specially made basins and begin to smash the grapes to extract the juice, moving rhythmically as if they are dancing.

Ardından tel süzgeçlerde süzülen üzüm suyu büyük kazanlarda, odun ateşinin üzerinde kaynamaya bırakılır. Üstünde biriken köpükler alındıktan sonra kaynayan kazandaki üzüm suyuna azar azar beyaz toprak atılır. Sadece Güney'in dağlarında bulunan, kirece benzeyen özel bir topraktır kullanılan. Köpükler bitene kadar bu işleme devam edilir. Tülbentten defalarca geçirilerek bir başka kazana aktarılan üzüm suyunun bir gecelik dinlenme zamanı gelmiştir. Sabah erkenden paluze yapımı başlar. Beş bardak üzüm suyuna bir bardak buğday unu katılır ve kazana koyulan şıra kaynatılmaya bırakılır. Sıcakken alınan şıranın içine un katılır, çırpılır ve kaynayan şıranın üzerine dökülerek pişirilir. Muhallebinin biraz daha katısı olan paluze hazırdır. Bir kısmı tabaklara dökülür ve üzerine kırıntı badem serpilir. Diğer taraftan ıslatılarak yumuşatılan, iğneyle ince sicimlere dizilen bademler, artık hazır olan paluzeye batırılır ve üzüm sucuğu olarak çıkar, sıra sıra tellere asılır ve kurumaya bırakılır. Soğuduktan sonra kesilen bademli sucuklar eskinin tel dolaplarının yerini alan derin donduruculara koyularak saklanır. Aynı suyu bir süre kaynatıp üzerinde biriken köpükleri aldıktan sonra üzüm pekmezi de yapabilirsiniz… Hiç şeker katkısı olmadan, tamamen doğal. Aynı suyu, badem serilmiş bir tepsiye biraz kalınca dökerseniz köfter, çarşafa dökerseniz pestil çıkar ortaya. Kıbrıs insanı köfteri baklava gibi keserek ikram etmeyi sever. İşte böylesine bereketli, sağlıklı bir meyvedir üzüm. Asmasına verdiğiniz bir damla suyun karşılığında o kadar çok şey verir ki bizlere…

The grape juice is drained through a wire mesh strainer and poured into large vessels, which are put on a wood fire to boil. The foam is skimmed off from the surface of the liquid, and a 'white earth' is added, little by little, to the grape juice boiling in the vessel; this is a special mineral that is found in the mountains in the south of the island. This process continues until the foam disappears from the surface of the boiling liquid. And now it's time to make the grape juice: this is drained through cheesecloth several times, and then poured into another vessel, in which it is left to stand for one night. The process of making paluze starts early in the morning. A waterglass of wheat flour is added to five glasses of grape juice, and the fermented grape juice is boiled in a pot. Grape juice is taken out while it is hot, some flour is added, and it is whisked, poured onto the boiling fermented grape juice, and left to cook. And now the paluze, which is a bit thicker than pudding, is ready. Some of it is put on plates and crushed almonds are sprinkled on it. Nearby, almonds which have been moistened, softened, and strung together using a needle and string, are dipped into the paluze. After this, the strings of almonds are dipped in starch grape molasses, taken out, and hung out in rows, where they are left to dry. This sweet, which is cut into pieces after it gets cold, is today kept in deep freezers, which have replaced the old wire kitchen cupboards. You can also make grape molasses by reboiling the juice for a while and removing its foam... If you don't add sugar, it's completely natural. When you pour the juice into a tray with almonds laid on its surface, it becomes a 'kofter'; when you pour it on linen it becomes 'pestil'. Cypriots like to serve kofter by slicing it into diamond shapes. The grape is really a healthy and rich fruit; it gives us so much in return for just the drop of water that we give to its vine...

eçtiğimiz yıl “Dantel Kadınlar-Doğurdu” isimli ilk kişisel sergisini açan ve 2005 yılından bu yana heykelle uğraşan, esas mesleği eczacılık olan Sezin Boğaç'la sanat ve yaşam üzerine konuştuk.

ezin Boğaç, a pharmacist by profession, has been working on sculpture since 2005, and last year she had her first solo exhibition, 'Lace Women - Gave Birth'. We had a little chat with her about art and life.

Who is Sezin Boğaç?

1951 yılında Lefkoşa'da doğdum. Lefkoşa Türk Lisesi'nden mezun olduktan sonra İstanbul Üniversitesi Eczacılık Fakültesi'nde eğitim gördüm. Bu dönemde, eşim Baki Boğaç'la tanıştım. Evli ve üç çocuk annesiyim. On yıl boyunca Gazimağusa Devlet Hastanesi'nde hizmet verdikten sonra kendi eczanemi açtım. 2005 yılında eşim Baki Boğaç'la Pygmalion Heykel Atölyesi'nde heykel çalışmalarına başladım. İlk kişisel sergim olan 'Dantel Kadınlar-Doğurdu' isimli sergimi geçen yıl açtım.

I was born in Nicosia in 1951. I finished my secondary education at the Nicosia Turkish High School and then studied Pharmacy at İstanbul University. During that period I met my husband, Baki Boğaç; I'm married and I have three kids. After working at the Famagusta State Hospital for ten years, I opened my own pharmacy. In 2005 I started to work on sculpture at my husband's Pygmalion Sculpture Studio, and I had my first solo exhibition last year.

Yine, evliliğimiz süresince gerek Kıbrıs'ta gerekse yurtdışında yüzlerce sergi gezerek heykel sanatını daha yakından gözlemleme olanağı buldum. İçimde her zaman sanatsal bir şeyler yaratma isteği vardı ama işimin yoğunluğu ve üç çocuğum zamanımın büyük kısmını alıyordu. Çocuklarım büyüdükten sonra iş tempomu azalttım ve Baki'ye, danteli de kullanarak heykel çalışmalarına başlamak istediğimi söyledim. O gün çalışmalara başladık ve halen çalışmalarım devam etmektedir. İlk kişisel serginizi zevkle gezdim ve yaratmış olduğunuz eserlerden çok etkilendim. Sergideki eserlerin konsepti neydi? Sergimde, düşleyen, doğuran, şekil veren, yaratmanın sancısını her alanda yaşayan kadının, içsel dünyasının dışavurumunu anlatmak istedim. Kadına dair her şey, dantel heykellerin arakesitlerinde yer buldu. Kadın dünyasını ancak dantelle anlatabilirdim; heyecanını, sabrını, anneliğini, sevecenliğini, isyanını, soyluluğunu, yani her şeyini, soyut bir anlatım diliyle kotardım.”

How did you start making sculptures? I was following Baki's work very closely; and during our marriage, as I went to hundreds of exhibitions, I also had a lot of opportunities to observe and follow developments in the art of sculpture both in Cyprus and abroad. Inside me, I always had the desire to create artistic objects, but the intense pressure of work and three children took up a lot of my time. After they grew up, I reduced my workload and told Baki that I wanted to start working on sculpture, bringing it together with lacework. We started working that day, and I'm still at it. I enjoyed visiting your first solo exhibition, and I was very impressed by the pieces you had created. What was the concept behind the works in the exhibition? I wanted to reflect the expression of the inner world of a woman who imagines, gives birth, creates form, and experiences the pain of creation in every field. Everything related to woman found its place in the intersections of the lace sculptures. I could only describe a woman's world by using lace; I worked on her excitement, patience, motherhood, tenderness, rebelliousness, nobility – in other words, all that was her – through an abstract language of expression.

Why lace?

Danteli çocukluğumdan beri çok severim. Dantel, farklı bir duygu seline doğru uzanan dünyaları barındırır her motifinde. Yıllar yılı dantellerle, kadının içinde tıkanan negatif/ pozitif tüm duyguların dışavurumunu anlatmaya çalıştım. Dantele olan bu sevgimden dolayı danteli hayatın içine geçirmeye çalıştım. Danteli nasıl daha kalıcı yaparım diye düşündüm ve bunun yanıtını sanatta, heykel sanatında buldum. Dantel her zaman metaforum olmuştur ve ileride de olacaktır.

'I've loved lacework since my childhood. Within each of its motifs, lace contains worlds that lead to different floods of emotions. For years I tried to express all the negative/positive feelings which are locked inside a woman, through the medium of lace. Because of my love of lace, I tried to insert it into life; I wondered how I could make lace more permanent, and I found the answer to this in art, in the art of sculpture. Lace has always been my metaphor, and it always will be.'

At present I'm working on two different concepts. My works under the title 'Black Hole' are part of a project where I am thinking about the emptiness of human beings and how they can overcome it. I used lace to draw human beings, women, out of their emptiness. The second project I'm working on is called 'Whirling Dervishes': Elif Şafak's book 'Aşk' ('Love') made a deep impression on me, and when I did some research afterwards, I

Yes, there is. But it's a well-intentioned feminism: my aim in my works is to remind women of their own power. Women are equal to men, and they are powerful enough to close all black holes'. What advice would you give to women who are married or have children, and who have artistic inclinations like you, but can't spare time for this? I was very lucky to have a teacher like Baki 34Boğaç next to me. I want to underline for women that nothing is ever too late. I want to tell them to bring out the love of art that is inside them. No matter how busy they are, people should be able to spare time for themselves if they want to, and use this time to develop themselves. Art is the most human act, and it makes you more human. I would advise them to get training in the field of art which they find most interesting.

The models who showed off Ziya's designs – from Turkey, Ece Gürsel, Tuğçe Sarıkaya, Tuğçe Dural, Deniz Şimşek, Ece Kartal; and from the TRNC, the H & V Agency's Ceyda Bahşi, Rita, Dasha and Yana and the Günkut Agency's Ceyda Tatlı – were watched very attentively by the audience.

The fashion show was seen by those who watched it, from Turkey's Hürriyet newspaper and Posta Newspaper magazine as well as from the local press, as a sign that the young fashion designer's name would soon be well known in Turkey and in the fashion world outside North Cyprus.

Sun Rent a Car 1978 yılında Kıbrıs'ın ilk araç kiralama şirketlerinden biri olarak kuruldu. Esasen aile şirketidir. Kurulmadan önce benzin istasyonu mevcuttu. Daha sonra bu benzin istasyonu bünyesinde araç kiralanmaya başlandı. Daha sonra bahsettiğim gibi 1978 yılında Sun Grup'un ilk şirketi olarak kurulup faaliyete geçti. Başlangıçta 20 civarında dönemin araçları, Murat 124 olarak bilinen araçlar, mevcuttu. Şu anda birçok marka ve tipte aktif 240 aracımız mevcuttur ve filonun yaş ortalaması hayli gençtir ki, biz özellikle buna çok dikkat ediyoruz. Sun Rent-a-Car was one of the first car rental companies in Cyprus; it's a family-run company that was established in 1978. Before that, there was a petrol station, and the petrol station started to rent out cars. And then, as I said, Sun Rent-a-Car was created and started functioning in 1978 as the first company of the Sun Group. At first there were about 20 cars from that period – the model was the Murat 124. Now we have 240 active cars of various types and makes; the average age of the fleet is very young, and we're being very careful to maintain this.Rental cars are essential if you want to take a trip freely within the borders of North Cyprus, where the public transportation is inadequate. In this respect, we've worked and are still working with high principles and without sacrificing quality, to always be in the right place at the right time, with friendly service and positive energy, to offer the best possible service to all the tourists visiting our island and to fulfil their expectations at the highest level. Our firm began its activities as a pioneer in the field, with a dynamic structure and a commitment to keeping up with the times, and it's still at the forefront today.

We understand you introduced a lot of 'firsts' in Cyprus. What were they?

Evet. Kıbrıs'ta web sitesi üzerinden online rezervasyon alan ilk rent a car firmasıyız. Ayrıca ISO 9001 kalite hizmet sertifikası olan ilk firma da yine Sun Rent a Car'dır. Yine bugün Ercan Havaalanı bünyesinde kiralık araç ofis hizmeti veren ilk ve tek firma da yine bizim firmamızdır.

That's right. We were the first car rental company in Cyprus to take online reservations through our website. Sun Rent-a-Car was also the first company to be awarded the ISO 9001 quality service certificate. And again, ours was the first and is still the only company that has an office and offers rental car service at Ercan Airport.

What do you need if you want to rent a car in North Cyprus? Being older than 25, and having a legal driving license which is valid and conforms to the TRNC's laws is sufficient. During the peak holiday season, between July 15th and September 15th, you can't find a rental car if you haven't booked one in advance.

Could you give us some information about the costs of the rental cars that you offer? The costs vary, because we have various makes and models of cars, but on the average it's between 20 and 28 British pounds a day. Of course the prices may change depending on how long you rent the car for, and the season. We rent cars for a minmum three-day period. If you're wondering why the prices are given in British pounds, it's because most of our guests are British. So if you look at the tourists you provided services for this year, where were they coming from?

If they wish, the cars they rent are washed free of charge and then given to them. We also offer free baby car seats; there's a transfer service to wherever they want to go for visitors arriving at Larnaca Airport in South Cyprus (we charge for this); and

there's a free transfer service for customers who come to our island via Ercan Airport, again to wherever they want to go. We also have a support team that provides urgent assistance or can intervene if our guests run into any problems, and you can reach this team at our 24/7 hotline. Incidentally, the maintenance and technical service is done on our cars continually and systematically, so our customers don't experience any technical problems and can drive around safely in them. If there is a technical problem, we can replace the car immediately with a similar one. What's the car rental sector like in North Cyprus?

Girne Rocks Hotel and Casino'da 14 ve 15 Ekim gecesi sahneye çıkan Işın Karaca'nın 28 gün önce doğurduğuna inanmak mümkün değildi. Passatempo'ya özel bir röportaj veren Karaca, doğumdan sonra çabuk toparlanmasını doğurduktan birkaç gün sonra yürüyüş ve pilates yapmasına bağladı. Işın Karaca'nın Rocks Hotel and Casino'da seslendirdiği “Arabesk 1” ve “Arabesk 2” albümlerinden parçalar davetlilerden büyük alkış aldı.

t was impossible to believe that Işın Karaca, the Turkish pop singer who gave a performance at Kyrenia's Rocks Hotel and Casino on the nights of 14 and 15 October, delivered a baby just 28 days ago. Karaca, who gave an interview especially for Passatempo, said she was able to get into shape because she kept fit by starting to walk and do pilates a few days after she gave birth. The songs she performed onstage at the Rocks Hotel and Casino from her latest albums, 'Arabesk 1' and 'Arabesk 2', were received by the audience with enthusiastic applause.

ebeğiniz henüz 20 günlük diye duydum. 20 gün önce doğurmuş bir kadına hiç benzemiyorsunuz. Gayet formda görünüyorsunuz ve sahnedesiniz. Bunu nasıl açıklamalı? Doğuralı 28 gün oldu. Normal şartlar altında ekim ortasında doğacakken erken doğdu bebeğimiz. Tabii ki emziriyorum, nadiren uykusuzluk çektiğim zamanlar da oluyor ama açıkçası artık yeni bir çağda yaşıyoruz. Eski geleneksel lohusa zamanı 40 gün sürerdi; ben 10 günde olayı kapattım. Kalkıp hemen spora gittim, kendimi hemen toplamak için ne gerekiyorsa onu yaptım çünkü işimi de çok seviyorum. Ayrıca 40 kişilik bir ekibim var; çalışmak mecburiyetindeyiz. 40 tane aileye bakmak çok büyük bir yükümlülük. Haliyle sahneye bir an önce dönmek istedim ve çok da keyifli oldu. Şimdilik ben nereye o da oraya şeklinde bir hayat yaşıyoruz. En büyük yardımcım babası. İnanılmaz yükümü hafifletiyor. Baba kız olarak aralarında çok ciddi bir aşk var. Çok güzel, inanılmaz bir ilişkileri var. Eşim bana çok yardımcı oluyor. Annem de elbette. Çok huzurlu ve mutlu bir bebek olduğu için şu aşamada hiçbir sıkıntı yaşamıyoruz diyebilirim.

I heard that your baby is 20 days old. You don't look like a woman who gave birth 20 days ago. You look very fit, and you're performing onstage. How do we explain this? It's been 28 days since I gave birth. Under normal circumstances my baby would have been born in mid-October, but she arrived earlier. Of course I'm breastfeeding, and there are also times when I suffer from sleeplessness, but actually, we're living in a new era now. The old traditional period of staying home and resting used to last for forty days; but I finished this process in ten days, and immediately registered in a gym. I did everything I had to, to get in shape, because I really love my profession. And I have a team of forty people; we have to work. It's a huge responsibility to have towards forty families, so I wanted to get back to the stage as soon as possible, and it was a very good decision. She comes with me wherever I go; this is our lifestyle for now. My greatest help is her father; he's reducing the load on me tremendously. There's a really deep love between them as father and daughter, and they have a fantastic relationship. My husband is helping me a lot, and so is my mother. What I can say, is that since she's a very peaceful and happy baby, we don't have any problems at this stage.

Valla Mia doğduktan 3 gün sonra, “bir tane daha yapsak mı?” diye düşündük. Ben çocukluğumdan bu yana İtalyan filmlerindeki gibi bir ailem olsun istemişimdir. Masa etrafında anneanne, babaanne, çocuklar, kuzenler, torunlar olsun. Niye yaşıyoruz ki? Binlerce, milyonlarca insan sizi tanısa bile eve gidip, makyajını sildiğinde sen senle kalıyorsun. O yüzden aile her şeyden önemli. Bizim çekirdek aile büyüyor. Benim sağım solum belli olmaz. Seneye bir tane daha yapmayı düşünebiliriz.

Actually, three days after Mia was born we started thinking, 'shall we have another one?' Since my childhood I've always wanted to have a big family, like the Italians do. Grandmothers, grandfathers, children, cousins, grandchildren, all around the table... What are we living for? Although thousands, millions of people know you, when you go home and take off your make-up you're on your own, so the family is the most important thing. Our small family is getting bigger; I'm an impulsive person, so next year we may think about having a new baby.

Kıbrıs'ta yayımlanan Kuzey Dergisi'nde sizin zamanında KKTC Tekvando Birincisi olduğunuz haberi çıktı. Bebeğiniz Mia doğduktan sonra bu kadar çabuk toparlanmanızda sporun etkisi büyük sanırım. Evet, kadınlarda tekvando birincisiydim. O altyapının etkisi tabii ki var. Hamileliğim boyunca hiç egzersizi bırakmadım. Ama şu da var: Yeni dönemde çalışan anneler, son aya kadar çalışıyorlar. Eskidendi öyle 3 ay önce işi bırakıp, 3 ay sonra dönmeler... Ben hamileliğimde son dakikaya kadar yüzdüm ve hatta hamileliğimde kilo verdim. 20 kilo önceden vermiştim. Geçen sene bende şeker hastalığı ortaya çıktı. Şeker sorunu çözülünce hemen kilo vermeye başladım. Şeker nedeniyle hamile de kalamıyordum. Şeker tedavisi gördükten sonra hemen hamile kaldım. Ve arada sporu hiç bırakmadım. Doğurduktan hemen sonra hemen tekrar pilatese başladım. Pilates doğumdan sonra çok hızlı bir şekilde iç organlarınızın ve rahminizin oturmasını sağlıyor. Doğumdan iki gün sonra hemen yürüyüşe çıktım mesela. Sezeryanlı halimle yürüyüş yapmaya başladım. Kesinlikle kendini salmamak lazım.

In Kuzey Magazine, which is published in North Cyprus, there was an article that said you were the TRNC's taekwondo champion at one time. I think sports played a significant role in your getting into shape so quickly after Mia was born. That's right, I was the taekwondo champion in the women's category. Of course this background had an influence on me; I never stopped exercising during my pregnancy. But there's also this: in this new age, working mothers who are expecting keep working up until the last month before the delivery. It used to be that you stopped working three months before, and started again three months after the birth... I swam right up to the last day, and I even lost weight during my pregnancy. Before I became pregnant I had lost 20 kilos; last year I learned that I was diabetic, and after solving my diabetes problem I started to lose weight. Because of my illness I wasn't able to have a baby, but after the diabetes treatment I became pregnant. And I never stopped exercising during my pregnancy. Pilates enables your internal organs and uterus to settle down. For example, I went for a walk two days after my delivery: I started walking, having just had a Caesarean. You shouldn't let yourself go.

You were performing on the stage at Kyrenia's Rocks Hotel for the first time, I think...

Girne Rocks Hotel'de ilk kez sahneye çıktınız galiba... Kıbrıs'ta neredeyse her yerde çıkmıştım. Rocks'ta ilk kez çıkışım ve 2 gece de çok keyifli geçti. Kıbrıslı olduğum için Kıbrıs'a çok sık geliyorum. Konser için geliyorum ama burada hava çok güzel olduğu için buradaki eve, annemlerin yanına kaçıyorum. İnsan ailesini özlüyor. Bir de Türklerin olduğu yerde tatil yapmayı daha çok seviyorum galiba. Kendini başka ülkelerde rahat hissedemiyor insan. Ben Kıbrıs'ta eşofmanımı giyip, annemle pazar çarşı dolaşırım. Çocukluğumdan beri tanıdığım insanlarla karşılaşmak ve Işın Karaca olarak değil de onların çocukluklarından beri tanıdığı Işın olarak sohbet etmek beni çok mutlu ediyor. Çaktırmadan ayda bir kere Kıbrıs'a geliyorum esasında.

I've performed almost everywhere in Cyprus, but this was my first appearance at the Rocks Hotel, and I really enjoyed both the nights when I performed. Because I'm Cypriot, I come to Cyprus frequently. I come for concerts, but because the weather is very nice here I escape to my mother's house; I miss my family. And also, I think I prefer to go on vacation where Turkish people live; I don't feel comfortable in foreign countries. In Cyprus I wear tracksuits and go around the shops with my mother; to meet people I've known since childhood and chat with them – not as 'Işın Karaca' but as the Işın they've known from childhoood – also really makes me happy. Actually, I come to Cyprus once a month on the quiet.

They say your recent album series, 'Arabesk', is getting a lot of popular recognition...

Son “Arabesk” albümlerinizin beğeni topladığı belirtiliyor... “Arabesk 1” ve “Arabesk 2”, bir projenin parçası aslında. Türkiye'nin gelmiş geçmiş en önemli şarkıcılarının seslendirdiği parçaları söylüyoruz bu albümlerde. Normalde ben Batı Müziği söylüyorum ve Batı Müziğini çok severek söylüyorum. Bu sefer Batı ve Doğu sentezi yapmayı düşündüm. Bu sentezi, altına günümüzün “sound”unu koyarak sunmak çok hoş oldu bence. 40 yıl önceki en iyi seslerin şarkılarını tekrar seslendirmek benim için büyük bir onur. Bunu da Selami Şahin'e borçluyum. Selami Şahin Türkiye'nin en iyi vokal koçlarından biri ve bana şarkıcılığımı yeniden öğretti. O pencereden bakıp, aşkın aşk olduğu zamanları insanlara tekrar yaşatma şansı yakaladım. Popüler kültürde biz artık derinlikli aşk şarkıları söyleyemiyoruz. Ben Allah'ın bana verdiği bu sesin hakkını vermem gerektiğini düşünürüm. O yüzden eskiye dönüş çok iyi oldu. Ve “Arabesk 1” den sonra “Arabesk 2” de daha zor parçaları seslendirdim. İnsanlar bu şarkıları çok özlemiş. Hiçbir promosyon yapmadan albüm şu anda 70 binde. 2. albüm hamileliğime denk geldiği için albüm sonrasında albümle hiç ilgilenemedim. Daha yeni yeni promosyona başlıyorum. Hiçbir şey yapmadan albümün 70 bine ulaşması benim için bir onur. Dünyanın hiçbir yerinde albümler satmazken, hiçbir şey yapmadan 3-4 ayda 70 bin satmış olmak benim için hakikaten büyük onur.

Actually, 'Arabesk 1' and 'Arabesk 2' are part of one project. In these albums we perform the songs that were originally performed by the greatest singers of Turkey. Normally I do Western music, and I love to work in this genre; but this time I thought of making an east-west synthesis. I think presenting this synthesis by adding in today's sounds as background turned out very well. It's a great honour for me to sing the songs sung by the best voices of forty years ago. And I owe this honour to Selami Şahin, a Turkish performer and composer; he's one of the best vocal coaches in Turkey in my opinion, and he retaught me how to sing. Looking out through that window, I caught an opportunity to remind people of the times when love was really love. In popular culture, we can't sing deeply felt love songs any more. I think I have to do justice to the voice God gave me, so going back to the old days was a good thing to do. And after 'Arabesk 1', I performed more difficult songs in 'Arabesk 2'. People miss those songs a lot; without doing any marketing, 70,000 copies were sold. And because the second album coincided with my pregnancy, I couldn't take care of it after it was released; I'm just starting to promote it now. It's a real honour for me that I've sold 70,000 copies of the album without doing any marketing, to sell 70,000 in three to four months at a time when albums aren't selling anywhere in the world.

uzey Kıbrıs Turkcell is offering an opportunity to its subscribers who are visiting Turkey to make phone calls there at the price of calls in the TRNC.

The service does away with roaming (international call) charges, so when subscribers who join this campaign make phone calls in Turkey, they are charged at TRNC domestic rates, and they also don't pay any charges when they receive a call. Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell is offering all its subscribers who visit Turkey a total of 60 minutes during one week for 5 TL/100 credits. For those 60 minutes, they will be charged at the domestic rate of 25 kuruş/6 credits per minute when they make calls from Turkey to Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell numbers, and they will not be charged for received calls from any numbers within this period. This means that when they are in Turkey, subscribers will benefit from a discount of over 80%, and will pay only 25 kuruş/6 credits per minute for the calls they make instead of 1.26 kuruş/35 credits; and they will also be able to accept all their incoming calls for free instead of paying 90 kuruş/25 credits per minute. This campaign is available to both postpaid and prepaid subscribers, and all individual and corporate subscribers can benefit from it as well.
