enüz 25 yaşında olan Eda Akdeniz, Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın saygın iş kadınlarından, Kaner Şirketler Grubu Yönetim Kurulu Üyesi Güliz Kaner’in sevgili kızı... Eda İngiltere’de Canterbury Christ Church Üniversitesi’nde 3 sene Uluslararası İşletme eğitimi aldı. Ardından Gaziantep’te bir şirkette staja giden Eda, İngiltere’deki eğitimini Middlesex Üniversitesi’nde tamamladı. Diplomasını aldıktan sonra ulaşmayı çok istediği bir hayale yelken açan Eda, Fransa’nın güneyindeki Montpellier şehrinde Fransızca öğrenmek için bir dil okuluna başladı.

da Akdeniz, who is just 25 years old, is the beloved daughter of one of North Cyprus’ respected businesswomen, a member of the board of directors of the Kaner Group of Companies, Guliz Kaner. Eda studied International Business at the University of Kent in England for three years. Eda, who following this completed an internship at a company in Gaziantep, completed her studies in England at the Middlesex University. After receiving her diploma, Eda, setting sail for a long awaited dream, started a language school to learn French in the town of Montpellier, in the south of France.

Paris veya Lyon yerine çok da bilinmeyen bir kenti tercih eden Eda, Fransızca öğrenirken okulun yurdunda kalarak birçok arkadaş edineceği bir ortamda, kendi deyimiyle maceraperestliğinin tadını çıkardı. Eda, choosing a town not as well known as Paris or Lyon, while learning French stayed in the school dorms, an environment where she would be able to make friends, and with her own experiences fully enjoy her own adventurous nature. Eda, who wistfully remembers her days in France, by seizing the job offered to her by the school, also shows that she is responsible enough to help partially pay for some of her education.

Eda states that she shared with her mother, Guliz Kaner, her decisions, after returning from France and started working at the Kaner Group of Companies. Working for each department within the group of companies Eda became mature enough to make the choice of either working at the family company or setting out alone and creating her own. Kaner Şirketler Grubu’nda ilk işiniz neydi? 2 sene boyunca aile şirketimizin her bölümünde oryantasyon programına tabi tutuldum. Ardından Gloria Jean’s Coffees’in Halkla İlişkiler görevini üstlendim. Domino’s Pizza’nın KKTC franchise’ını alınca da Domino’s Pizza’nın Operasyon Müdürlüğü’nü yapmaya başladım. Aile şirketinde çalışmanın avantajları ve dezavantajları nelerdir? Aile ile çalışmanın büyük zorlukları var. Dışarıdan göründüğü kadar kolay değil. Ancak annem ve dayılarım mükemmel insanlar. Ülkenin en iyi iş kadınları ve işadamlarının içinde yer alan bir ailem var. Onların alanlarında bu kadar başarılı olması benim için büyük bir avantaj, çünkü beni doğru yöne yönlediriyorlar. Amerikan şirketi Domino’s Pizza’nın doğrudan KKTC’ye ve Kaner Şirketler Grubu’na franchise verebileceğini bekliyor muydunuz? Açıkçası hiç ihtimal vermiyordum. Gloria Jean’s Coffees’in de franchise’ını almayı başarmıştık ve çok düşük bir ihtimalle, belki ABD’den direkt olarak Domino’s Pizza franchise’ını alabileceğimize inanmak istiyordum. Hatta bazen annemin hayalperest olduğunu bile düşündüğüm oldu. Bence olacak iş değildi. Ama oldu ve başardık.

What was the first job you had within the Kaner Group of Companies? For two years I worked in different departments of the family company. Following that I took on the role of Gloria Jean’s Coffees Head of Public Relations. Once we bought the TRNC’s franchise for Domino’s Pizza I started working as the Head of Operations for Domino’s Pizza. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for a family company? There are great difficulties in working with the family. It is not as easy as it seems on the outside. However my mother and uncles are wonderful people. I have a family, which takes its place among the country’s best businessmen and businesswomen. For them to be this successful in their own fields is a great advantage to me because they lead me in the right direction. I trust my family deeply. Because I trust them, we easily work together. Working with the family eliminates possible mistrusts that might come up when working with others. I really admire my mother’s and my uncles’ way of working and I am sure that they always want the best for me. However, of course having a family or blood tie can sometimes cause personal problems to be reflected at work, or for work problems to be reflected at home. Nonetheless, these problems are overcome. In any case I now live on my own, in my own house. My mother, work included, always sees me as her daughter and in comparison to her solemnity at work, she is extremely emotional towards me and other members of the family. Were you expecting that the American company Domino’s Pizza would directly give the TRNC and the Kaner Group of Companies franchising rights? To be honest I was not expecting it at all. We had also been successful in acquiring the franchise for Gloria Jeans and even if it was a slight possibility I wanted to believe that we would be able to directly acquire the Domino’s Pizza franchise directly from the USA. In fact, I sometimes even thought that my mother was a daydreamer. I thought it was a moot deal. However it happened and we succeeded.

Birçok insan Domino’s Pizza’nın Türkiye’den franchise aldığını sanıyor ama Kaner Şirketler Grubu franchise’ı doğrudan ABD’den aldı. Bu da size, Domino’s Pizza KKTC’deki Operasyon Müdürü olarak çok sorumluluk yüklemiş olmalı... İlk başta çok zorlandığımızı itiraf etmeliyim. İlk zamanlar hakikaten bayağı zorlandım. Hatta bir ara bu işi yapamayacağımdan bile korktum. Sonra doğru insanlar doğru yere yerleştirilince ve doğru eğitimler verilince sorunların çözüldüğünü fark ettim. Birçok insan Türkiye’deki Domino’s Pizza’ya bağlı olduğumuzu sandığı için açıldığımızdaTürkiye’deki menü seçeneklerini de talep edebiliyordu. Biz de bıkmadan usanmadan Türkiye’ye değil, Amerika’ya bağlı olduğumuzu anlattık. Menümüzü yerel tatlara göre hazırladığımızı belirttik ve ileride talep olursa Türkiye’deki menü seçeneklerinden bazılarını menümüze koyabileceğimizi ifade ettik. ABD gibi büyük bir pazardaki teknolojik standartları KKTC’de uygulamak çok da kolay olmasa gerek. Dağıtım ağını ve personelin niteliğini dünya standartlarına çekebilmek oldukça zorlayıcı sanırım... ABD’deki merkez bize ne yapmamız gerektiğini en ince ayrıntısına kadar aktardığı için KKTC içinde yaşanan sorunları zamanla tek tek aşıyoruz. Buradaki sistemin yetersizliklerini gidermek için çaba gösteriyoruz ve ABD’deki merkez de sorunların çözülmesi için her ülkenin kendi sistemine adapte olunması gerektiğinin farkında. Merkezden bize birçok dosya ve eğitim kitapçıkları geliyor. Bu çalışmaları dikkatle inceliyor ve adım adım uyguluyoruz. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın geleneksel bir ada ülkesi olarak kalması çağın yeniliklerine aykırı bence. Gelen yeni markalarla modernleştiğimizi düşünüyorum. Üretim zincirinde kullanılan ürünler nerelerden geliyor? Un ve etler Türkiye’den, peynirimiz İngiltere’den geliyor. Çünkü Domino’s Pizza standartlarına uygun üretim yapmak zorundayız. Merkezden bize verilen listeden, sadece Avrupa’da ve Türkiye’de onay almış tedarikçilerden ürün satın alabiliyoruz. Tabii, taze sebzelerimizi iç piyasadan sağlıyoruz.

Many number of people think that the franchise for Domino’s Pizza was acquired fromTurkey yet the Kaner Group of Companies bought it directly from the USA. This, in itself, as the Head of Operations for the TRNC Domino’s Pizza, must have put you under great responsibility. I must admit that initially it was extremely hard. I really felt a lot of pressure initially. In fact, at one point, I even thought that I would not be able to do this job. Then I realized that when you placed the right people in the right positions and gave the right courses, problems were solved. As many people thought that we were tied to the Domino’s Pizza in Turkey, they also requested what was on the menu in Turkey. And we, tirelessly, kept telling people that we were tied to America, not Turkey. We stated that we prepared our menu according to local tastes and that if it was in demand that we would place some of the choices in theTurkish menu in ours. It is fair to say that implementing the technological standards of a market as big as America is difficult to do in the TRNC. I assume it is quite challenging to bring distribution networks and personnel to world-class standards. As the USA headquarters relayed to us in the finest detail what we had to do, we are, one by one, overcoming the problems that arise in the TRNC. We are trying to resolve the issues we have here and the USA headquarters realized that, for problems to be solved, they must adapt to countries’ own system. We receive many files and training manuals from headquarters.We carefully study these files and implement them down to the letter. I think that for North Cyprus to stay as a traditional island country is contrary to the contemporary era. I think we become more modernized with the new brands that come to our country. Where does the produce used in the chain come from? The flour and meat fromTurkey, our cheese from England. Because we have to produce according to Domino’s Pizza standards, we can only buy produce from approved suppliers inTurkey and Europe provided in the list given to us by headquarters.

Pizzaların 30 dakikadan geç teslim edilmesi durumunda tüketicinin pizzayı ücretsiz alması uygulamasına KKTC’de de geçilecek mi? Domino’s Pizza, pizzanın en lezzetli halinin 30 dakika içinde tüketilmesiyle olanaklı olduğunu bildiği için franchise’larına 30 dakika içinde pizzaların teslim edilmesi gerektiğini şart koşar. Ancak 30 dakikada teslim edilemeyen üründen ücret alınmaması uygulaması, dünya ölçeğinde sadece 4 ülkede uygulanabilmektedir. Biz ise şayet 30 dakikada teslimat yapmamış olursak, hatamızı telafi etmek için müşterilerimize bir kupon veriyoruz ve bir sonraki siparişlerinde “Twisted Bread” adındaki ürünümüzü kendilerine ücretsiz sunuyoruz. Genç bir yönetici olarak aile büyüklerinizle hiç çelişkiye düştüğünüz oluyor mu? İş ilişkilerinde inanmadığım bir şey varsa derhal tepki gösteririm. Ama inanırsam ve ne olacağı bana iyi anlatılırsa denilenleri uygularım. Ama bazen özellikle reklam tasarımlarında annemle tartıştığım oluyor. Açılana kadar yaşadığım stres inanılmazdı. Aldığım ilk büyük sorumluluktu ve bir dünya markasını Kuzey Kıbrıs’a getirmek başlı başına çok büyük bir görevdi. Açılış öncesi çok zorlandım ve yemek yiyemez hale geldim. Öğlenleri bir öğün ancak yiyebiliyordum. Aşırı stres yüzünden kilo verdim. Ama artık işler yoluna girdiği için o günler geride kaldı.

In the case of the pizzas being delivered later than 30 minutes, will the process of the customers’ getting the pizza for free be implemented in theTRNC? Because Domino’s Pizza knows that the most delicious way pizza can be enjoyed is within the first 30 minutes, it stipulates to all their franchises that the pizza should be delivered in 30 minutes.The process of giving charge-free pizza to those who do not receive their pizzas within 30 minutes can only be applied in 4 countries on a worldwide scale. However, with us, if we have not delivered within the 30 minutes, we give our customers a coupon to make up for our mistake and we give them a free gift of our product called “Twisted Bread” on their next order. As a young director are there times when you experience conflicts with your elders? In business relationships, if there is something I do not believe in, I react immediately. However, if I believe and if what is to be done is explicitly explained to me then I adhere to what has been said. Yet, sometimes, especially regarding advertorial designs, I have argued with my mother. When a project is created and my mother does not give her approval, the whole thing needs to be redesigned. But, of course, these disputes can also be caused by the mistakes made by me due to my inexperience. As I continue to work with my mother I am learning to dig deeper into the details. On the other hand, I am weary of making a mistake that would harm the respected Kaner family name. For me, establishing a type of work discipline that suits my family comes before anything else. Sometimes I work until 00:30 at night. Generally, I spend ten hours at work because I need to get used to solving a different problem everyday. How is it that you are able to stay so thin while working in the pizza industry? On the contrary, while Domino’s Pizza was being established, I lost 13 kilos! The stress I was under until it opened was unbelievable. It was the first major responsibility that I had took on and to bring a worldwide brand to North Cyprus in itself was a huge job. I really struggled before the opening and could not eat. I could just about manage one meal in the afternoon. But now that everything has fallen into place, those days are left behind me.

Ailemin mutluluğu ve sağlığı her şeyden önce gelir. Çocuk yetiştirirken disiplinin, çocuğun size tabi olması için değil, sadece doğru gelişmesi ve kendi başına daha mutlu olabilmesini sağlamak için uygulanması taraftarıyım. Sadece kendi gelişimleri için gerektiği oranda disiplin uygulanmasına inanırım. Çocuklar bazen tatminsiz olabilse de büyüdükçe her şeyin ne kadar zor elde edildiğini anlamaya başlıyorlar. Küçük bir ülkede çalışmanın gençlere getirdiği ayrı sorumluluklar var. Şirketimiz müşteri memnuniyetine azami önem verir. Ve Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın küçük bir ada ülkesi olması nedeniyle hizmette yapılacak en küçük hata bile şirketin sahiplerine doğrudan ulaştırılır. Gençlerin Avrupa’daki işleyiş sistemi ile KKTC’deki ilişkiler arasındaki farkı iyi algılaması gerekiyor. Ülkemizde başka sektörlerde de yer alan bir grup şirketiyseniz, müşteri memnuniyetini sağlamak için tek tek müşterilerin taleplerine ve şikayetlerine cevap vermeniz gerekir. Bizim için müşterinin gönlünü hoş tutmak her şeyden önce gelir. Dilerse müşteri bir daha gelmez ama her şartta gönlünün hoş tutulması gerekir.

As one of our leading businesswomen how is your relationship going with your children who have started to work in your group? My family’s health and happiness come before anything else. I am in favor of discipline when raising a child, not so that your child is dependent on you, but so that they attain the right development and are able to be happy on their own. I do not want my children to be disciplined because he or she is my son or daughter. I believe that they need only be given enough discipline for their own development. Although children are insatiable, as they grow up they come to realize how hard earned everything is. There is also the additional responsibility that comes from working in a small country for the youth. Our company places the utmost importance on customer satisfaction. Also, the fact that North Cyprus is a small island country means that even the smallest mistake in services will be directly delivered to the owners of the company. The young generation needs to really understand the difference of the working systems in Europe and the TRNC. If you are a group of companies in our country that takes place in other industries too, you must establish customer satisfaction, take in customer requests and complaints. Keeping our customers happy comes before anything for us. If the customer wishes, they do not have to come back, but they must be kept happy in any case.

Domino’s Pizza’nın merkezinden, ABD’den KKTC için franchise alınması sürecini bize anlatır mısınız? Oğlum Vedat iki sene boyunca sürekli Domino’s Pizza ile yazıştı. İstanbul’da, Ulus semtinde bizim bir evimiz vardı. Ve bu ev Domino’s Pizza’nın tam üzerindeydi. Bu nedenle çocuklarımda küçüklüklerinden itibaren Domino’s Pizza ürünlerine karşı bir beğeni ve hayranlık oluşmuştu. Domino’s Pizza’yı Kuzey Kıbrıs’a getirmek için uğraşmamız biraz da buradan ileri gelir. Vedat askerliğini bitirdikten hemen sonra 1,5 sene boyunca aralarında Domino’s Pizza’nın da bulunduğu, birçok farklı franchise firması ile sürekli olarak yazıştı.

Could you tell us about the process of purchasing the franchise for the TRNC from the USA’s Domino’s Pizza headquarters. My son Vedat corresponded continuously with Domino’s Pizza for two years. We had a home in the Ulus area in Istanbul. And this house was right on top of a Domino’s Pizza. For this reason, since they were small, my children had a liking and admiration for Domino’s Pizza products. Our endeavors over the years to get the Domino’s Pizza brand to North Cyprus stems from this a little bit. After finishing his military service, Vedat kept communicating with various franchise firms for 1,5 years, among which there was Domino’s Pizza as well.

Bir ara Vedat’ı “Artık yazma, biri çıkıp gelecek ve bizi azarlayacak” diye uyarıyordum! Domino’s Pizza verdiği yanıtlarda Kuzey Kıbrıs’a franchise vermekle ilgilenmediklerini ve bunu istemediklerini ifade etti. “Güney Kıbrıs’taki, Limasol ve Baf’taki mağazalarımız bizim için yeterlidir” diyorlardı. Aynı dönemde Güney Lefkoşa’daki Rum bayi Güney Kıbrıs’taki ekonomik krizden ve ilgisizlikten dolayı Domino’s Pizza franchise’ını bırakmak zorunda kaldı. Vedat da sürekli Domino’s Pizza’ya yazdığından bir yazışmasında “Kuzey Kıbrıs piyasası ile ilgilenmiyorsunuz ama bari bizimle tanışın. Biz Gloria Jean’s Coffees’i alarak ambargoları kırmış bir şirketiz” demişti. Güney Kıbrıs’a Domino’s Pizza’nın Avrupa Sorumlusu geldiğinde bize “Gidin ve Avrupa sorumlumuzla görüşün” dediler. Muhtemelen Vedat daha fazla onlara yazmasın, “bu işin olmayacağını yüzlerine de söyleyelim ve bu dosyayı kapatalım” niteyindeydiler.

At one point I told Vedat “Don’t write anymore, somebody’s going to come and scold us!” In their replies, Domino’s Pizza stated that they were neither interested nor wanted to give a franchise to the TRNC. They were saying, “Our stores in Limassol and Paphos in South Cyprus are sufficient for us”. However, at the same time, the Greek Cypriot subsidiary in South Nicosia had to cease their franchising agreement due to the disinterest there and the economic crisis in South Cyprus. As Vedat was continuously writing to them, in one of his correspondences he wrote “You’re not interested in the North Cyprus market but at least meet us. We are a company who has broken the embargoes by buying Gloria Jeans”. When the Domino’s Pizza representative went to South Cyprus, they said to us “Go and meet with our European representative”. They were probably interested in preventing Vedat from writing to them any further and telling us face to face that this was not going to happen, case closed.

Otelde yaptığımız sunumda şirketin portföyünün genişliği ve başarılarından dolayı bizden etkilendiler. Kendilerini Kuzey Kıbrıs’a davet edip, “Bizi bir de yerimizde görün” dedik. Kabul ettiler. Hem merkezimizi hem de Gloria Jean’sCoffees mağazalarını kendilerine gösterdik. Sonrasında hukukçuları devreye girdi ve Gloria Jean’s Coffees’le Kuzey Kıbrıs üzerindeki ticari ambargoları nasıl aştığımızı öğrenmek istediler. Gloria Jean’s Coffees’le yaptığımız sözleşmeleri inceledikten sonra KKTC’nin tanınmamışlığından ötürü doğacak hukuksal sorunlar aşılabilirse bizimle çalışmak istediklerini ifade ettiler.

We immediately prepared our presentation files and met with the Domino’s Pizza European representative in South Cyprus. In the presentation we did at the hotel they were impressed with our portfolio’s extensiveness and success. We invited them to North Cyprus and said “just come and see us in our place”.They accepted. We showed them both our offices and the Gloria Jean’s Coffees stores.The lawyers came into function after that and wanted to know how we had overcome the trading embargo in North Cyprus with Gloria Jean’s Coffees. After studying the Gloria Jean’s Coffees agreements, they stated that if the legal problems caused by the TRNC’s not being recognized as a country could be overcome, that they would like to work with us.

Hukuksal sorunlar nasıl aşıldı? 6 ay boyunca hukuksal sorunların aşılması için büyük çaba gösterildi ve nihayet sözleşmeler imzalandı. Ardından Avrupa’da 3 ay eğitim aldık. Domino’s Pizza yetkilileri Kuzey Kıbrıs’a gelerek, 3 ay da burada bize eğitim verdiler. Hamurun nasıl yapılacağı için ayrı eğitimci, pizzanın yapılması için ayrı eğitimci geldi. Açılış için ise 1 ay başka bir eğitimci daha Ada’ya geldi. İki kez de Avrupa Sorumlusu bizi burada ziyaret etti ve arada bir kere de denetim için geldiler. Denetim sırasında 4 yıldız aldık. En yüksek puan 5 yıldız ve hedefimiz 5 yıldız almaktı ama bitmeyen inşaatlardan ve düşünün ki, motorun üzerinde bırakılan anahtardan bile puan kırdılar ve 4 yıldız aldık. Standartlara uymak için gösterdiğimiz özen o kadar takdir gördü ki bize Romanya, Slovenya, Macaristan gibi Balkan ülkelerinde master franchise’larına ortak olmamızı teklif ettiler. Bu kadar kısa sürede Domino’s Pizza’nın güvenini kazanmış olmaktan büyük gurur duyduk. Aynı şey Gloria Jean’s Coffees için de geçerli. Gloria Jean’s Coffees merkezi, iki sene önce Türkiye Gloria Jean’s Coffees’i bize teklif etti. Temsil ettiğimiz şirketlerin kurallarına ve standartlarına uymaya çok önem veririz ve kendi şirketimizmiş gibi onlar için dostlukla çalışırız. Bizler yabancıların güvenini kazanırken devletimizin iş insanlarını kucaklamaması ve iş insanlarına güvenmemesi bizim için son derece üzücü ve hayret vericidir.

How were the legal problems overcome? Great effort was made for six months trying to overcome the legal problems and the agreements were finally signed. Following that we were trained in Europe for three months. Coming to North Cyprus, the Domino’s Pizza representatives trained us here. A different trainer on how to make the dough and a different trainer on how to make pizza came down. As for the opening, another trainer came to the island for a month. In this period the European representative visited us twice and in between they visited once for supervision. During the audit we scored four stars. The highest score was five stars and our aim was five stars. However, because of incomplete construction and the fact that our biker left his keys on the ignition, they deducted points and we got four stars. Our attention to comply with the standards was so appreciated that I was offered to become a partner in master franchises in the Balkan countries such as Romania, Slovenia and Hungary. To have gained Domino’s Pizza’s trust in such a short time made us very proud. The same applies to Gloria Jean’s Coffees. The Gloria Jean’s Coffees headquarters offered me theTurkey Gloria Jean’s Coffees two years ago. We place great importance on running the companies we represent according to their rules and standards and work in friendship with them, just like they were our own. While winning the trust of foreigners, our government’s mistrust of and the low level of support for business people makes us sad.

thiopia’s Kaffa region is known to be the first place where a coffee tree was seen. The Arabic nae for this region is “qahwah”.

Kahveyle ilgili onlarca, hatta yüzlerce kitap ve kaynak bulmak mümkün ama en ilginç anlatımlardan biri kahvenim “Tanrıların içeceği” olduğunu dile getirmesidir.

It is possible to find tens, even hundreds of books on coffee but one of the most interesting definitions of coffee is surely “The Drinks of Gods”.

This “indulgent” product, which is named by the Arabs as indulgent, is an indispensable part of our coffeehouses that started opening during the Ottoman Era, especially in the 1700s.

Kıbrıs’ta “kahve” ve “kahvehane” kültürü, çeşitli kitaplara konu olmakla birlikte, siyasette de yerini alıyor. “Coffee” and “coffeehouse” traditions in Cyprus are mentioned in many books and it is also spoken of in politics. For instance, Greek Cypriots call this kind of coffee “Cyprus Coffee” or even “Greek Coffee” at some instances even though they cook it exactly the Ottoman style. In spite of this, as a result of the interaction between cultures, they call the tool they use to coffee in “ibrik” and they call the froth “kaymak” which are both Turkish.

İstanbul’da başlayan Osmanlı kahvehane geleneği 1700’lü yıllarda Kıbrıs’a taşınır. Kısa sürede ülkenin en küçük köyünden en büyük kasabasına kadar her yerde “kahvehane” kültürü yaygınlık kazanır.

The Ottoman coffeehouse tradition that started in İstanbul spread to Cyprus in the 1700s. In quite a short time the “coffeehouse” culture was everywhere from the smallest village to the largest city.

Kahvelerin yudumlandığı, suyla servis edildiği bu kahvehaneler kimi zaman bir kültür merkezi, kimi zaman da kumar oynanan, eğlencelerin düzenlendiği bir yer olarak işlev görür. Bazı dönemlerde ise kahvehaneler, en ağır siyasi kararların alındığı mekânlardır.

These coffeehouses, where coffee is sipped and served with water, sometimes serve as a culture center and sometimes a hot spot where people gamble or join other entertaining activities. Sometimes these coffeehouses are home to the decision making moment of the most serious political issues.

Kahvehaneler, 1974 öncesinde Rum ve Türklerin karma yaşadığı köylerde, siyasi kimliğin oluşumunun da parçası olmuştur. Karma köylerde, Rumların ve Türklerin kahvehaneleri ayrı olagelmiştir.

In villages where Turkish and Greek Cypriots lived together before the year 1974, coffeehouses took part in the formation of political identity. Since long before, Turkish and Greek Cypriot coffeehouses have been separate in mixed villages.

Kahvehaneler, Kıbrıs’ın son 250 yılının en temel mekânlarıdır ve hâlâ köylerimizin en önemli merkezleri olmaya devam etmektedirler. Kıbrıs’ta kahvehane kültürü ile ilgili en etkili kaynaklardan biri, “Eski Lefkoşa Kahveleri ve Kahve Kültürü” adlı kitaptır. Şadi Yayınları tarafından basılan bu kitabı, Neriman Cahit kaleme almıştır.

Coffeehouses are the most basic venues of Cyprus in the past 250 years and they continue to be the most significant centers in villages. One of the most instrumental sources on coffeehouse traditions in Cyprus is “Old Nicosia Coffeehouses and Coffee Customs”. It is published by Şadi Publications and written by Neriman Cahit.

Firstly, they should establish what kind of wedding they are envisioning.They need to decide if they want a vintage style, old style wedding, or a modern wedding, a classical wedding or a crazy wedding. Of course, to make all these come true; it has to meet their budget. If they are going to work with an elite photographer and want more artistic pictures taken they must put aside a budget for this. Yet, I think that the first thing that should be decided is what kind of dress the bride wants to wear. The best way to decide on the decor of the wedding is once the design of the wedding gown has become apparent. For example, we had designed a Latin wedding dress for one of the brides we made a wedding dress for. The bride, ideal to the wedding gown’s concept, had roses put in her hair and there was a Latin feel in both the place used for the wedding and in the selected music. As a fashion designer, I think that the grooms attire must be chosen according to the wedding gown and that all other choices should suit the bride and groom’s choices.

Düğünlerden sonra “after party” yapmak gitgide yaygınlaşıyor. Gelin ve damat düğün sonrasında kendi arkadaşlarıyla baş başa parti yapıyorlar. Düğünden hemen sonra “after party” yapılacaksa gelinliği iki parçalı olarak tasarlıyoruz. Ancak dışarıdan gelinliğin iki parçalı olduğu anlaşılmıyor. Kabarık bölümün altında kısa bir bölüm tasarlanıyor ve böylelikle gelin alt kısmı çıkarıp partiye gidebiliyor. Özel tasarım olmayan gelinliklerde gelinliğin iki parçalı olduğu genellikle anlaşılır. O nedenle “after party” olacaksa gelinliğin özel tasarım olması şarttır. Çünkü gelinliğin deforme edilmeden nasıl iki parçalı hale geleceğini özel tekniklerle uygulamak ve dikimi de kişinin bedenine uygun olarak yapmak gerekir. Makyajdaki ayrıntılarda neleri göz önünde bulundurmalı? Gelinlere aşırıya kaçan, taşlı kirpikli, fazla renkli makyajı önermiyoruz. Çok taşlı bir gelinlik giyilecekse az mücevher, mesela çok küçük küpeler takılabilir. Bu tür gelinliklerle kolye takılmasını tavsiye etmem. Taşlı bir gelinliğe bir de kolye takılırsa taşlar arasında gelinlik boğulur. Eğer sade ve dantelden oluşan bir gelinlik giyilecekse o zaman büyük elmas ya da büyük pırlanta kolye gelinliği tamamlar. Duvaklara takılan taçlar benim tarzım olmamakla birlikte şayet gelin ille de taç takmak istiyorsa son dönemde üretilen çok ince taçlar arasından hoş bir seçim yapılabilir. Bence taç yerine duvakta çiçek kullanmak daha güzel bir sonuç doğuracaktır.

To have “after parties” after the wedding is becoming widespread. After the wedding the bride and groom have a party with their friends. If an after party is to take place immediately after the wedding, we design a two-piece dress. However, the wedding dress comprising of two pieces is not noticeable. A shorter part is designed under the billowing part and this way the bride can remove the bottom half and go to the party. On wedding gowns that are not personally designed, the fact that the dress is a two-piece is noticeable. For that reason, it is imperative that the wedding dress is personally designed if there is going to be an after party. Because the stitching needs to be done according to the person’s body and special techniques need to be applied so the gown is not deformed while becoming two pieces. What kind of details do we need to keep in mind for makeup? We do not recommend over the top, crystal embellished eyelashes or makeup with too many different colors for the brides. For the bride to look pure on that night she must refrain from unbalanced and gaudy makeup. If a very pronounced lipstick is going to be applied, for example if the lipstick is a maroon color the eye makeup, without question, must be natural and she must stay away from any black shades. However if the bride’s lipstick choice is in a pastel shade such as a light pink then she can go for darker shades on the eyes. What must be looked out for in jewelry choices? If a heavily jewel embellished gown is to be worn, then very few jewels should be worn, for example, tiny earrings. If a necklace is worn with a jewel embellished gown then the dress will be smothered. If a simple or lace wedding gown is to be worn then a large emerald or a large diamond necklace will complete the gown. Although crowns worn on top of veils are not to my liking, if the bride insists on wearing a crown she can select one of the very fine crowns made today. In my opinion using flowers with the veil will bring out a much nicer result.

Just like the bride can wear cream-colored shoes under a cream-colored wedding gown, if she is attending an after party she can bring another pair of shoes. However, above everything else because long hours are spent on foot, importance should be placed on the comfort of the shoe.

İnsanlar kendilerini fotoğrafta gelenekselleşmiş şekilde beyaz ya da krem rengi gelinliklerle görmek istiyor. Bir moda tasarımcısının yaratıcılığında ve vizyonunda sınır olmaması gerekir. Benim için mavi ya da pembe renkli bir gelinlik ya da hatta siyah bir gelinlik de olabilir, ancak bu yönde pek talep almıyoruz. Why is it that interest in wedding gowns in other colors apart from white, ivory and cream is so little? Anyone getting married does not want to take that risk. In their photographs, people want to see themselves in what has become a tradition, either a white or cream-colored wedding gown. A fashion designer must have no limits on his creativity or vision. For me, a blue or pink wedding gown, or even a black wedding gown is possible. However, we do not get many requests in that sense. I hear that there are different wedding gown colors requested from my designer friends in Europe but, there the numbers are also quite low. However, the concept of white and ivory wedding gowns has come to this day from a centuries old tradition. I do not think that this trend can be broken. For years, no fashion designer has been able to break the customary and traditional colors.

Bana çok hitap ettiğini söyleyemem. Kese taşınacaksa gelinnin yanındaki nedimelerin taşıması daha yerinde olur diye düşünüyorum. Bir gelinliği dikmek ne kadar zaman alıyor? Bu tamamen gelinliğin modeline bağlıdır. Bazen müşterilerim kararlarını vermiş olarak geliyor, bazen henüz karar vermemiş oluyor, bazen de bedenlerinde şık durmayacak modeller isteyebiliyorlar. Bu durumda gelin adayını yönlendiriyor ve bazı tavsiyelerde bulunuyorum. Eğer müşterim ne istediğini biliyorsa ve seçimi bedenine uygunsa ben de hemen tasarıma başlarım ve daha hızlı bir şekilde gelinlik ortaya çıkar. Ama gelin henüz kararsızsa süreç doğal olarak uzar. Eğer henüz modelde karar vermemişlerse, üç-dört ay önce gelmeleri en iyisidir. Çünkü bunun bir karar süreci, tasarım süreci ve de dikim süreci vardır. Elbette kişi kararını vermişse bir ayda gelinliği bitirmiş oluyoruz. Önce onların hayallerini dinliyorum ve gelinliğin modelini çizerek müşterilerimin hayallerini gerçekleştirmesine yardımcı olmaya çalışıyorum. Genellikle benim çizdiğim tasarımlar üzerinden gidiyoruz ama gelin adayları da kendi fikirlerini söylemekte özgürdür ve karşılıklı fikir alışverişinde bulunarak gelinlik yaptığım da oluyor.

I presume that wedding dresses need to be chosen according to the color of your hair? The wedding gown should be chosen according to the person’s skin tone and hair color. In general, I do not recommend milk white wedding gowns. They are both dated and make the woman look palsy. It makes the woman look as if there is something that has not been completed. Therefore, my wedding dresses are normally in ivory. Of course, if someone asks for a milk white wedding gown, we make it, but it is fair to say that it is not a color we recommend. A cream wedding dress goes very well with some shades of blond and brown hair. Ivory is better suited to those with black hair. How should the bride’s nail polish choice be? It shouldn’t be frilly and nail gems should be avoided. I am in the opinion that the plainer and simpler the bride the more she represents innocence. What do you think about the bride carrying a pouch? I cannot say I am very fond of it. I think, if there is going to be a pouch, it should be with the bridesmaid by the bride. How long does it take to tailor a wedding gown? This entirely depends on the style. Sometimes my customers already set their minds before they come to me, but some come to decide together. Sometimes, they may want styles that would not suit their body. In such cases, I try to guide the bride to be and give some advice. If my customer knows what she wants and if the style suits her figure, I start designing right away and the dress comes out faster. But if the bride to be is indecisive, the time naturally prolongs. If they haven’t decided on the style yet, it is best that they come three-four months ahead. This process is composed of the decision, design and tailoring phases. But, of course, if the bride had already decided what she wants, we finish the dress within a month. First, I listen to their dreams and then I draw the sketch and try to help my customer realize her dream. Generally, we follow the sketches I design but the brides-to-be are free to express their ideas and sometimes I design dresses upon exchange of ideas.

Kaldı ki mağazalardan alınan gelinliklerin fiyatları da çok yükselmiş durumdadır. Bir modacının tasarladığı özel yapım gelinlikler pahalıdır diye düşünmeksizin gelip görüşsünler. Belki düşündükleri kadar pahalıya çıkmaz, belki fikirleri değişebilir. Üstelik modacıların gelinlik fiyatları ile mağazalardaki gelinlik fiyatları hemen hemen aynıdır. Çünkü fiyatlarımızı Kıbrıs piyasasının şartlarına uygun tutmaya çalışıyoruz. İnsanların bütçelerine göre fiyatlandırma yapıyoruz. Damatlık tasarlamayı düşünüyor musunuz? Bu sene damatlık işine de giriyorum. Böylelikle çiftler daha uyumlu görünecekler.

Before you start designing, do you take a picture of the bride? Of course. First we take pictures in profile, back and front. Then I design the dress by looking at these pictures. If the bride is too thin I emphasize her curves, or if the bride is fleshy, I work on a style that would not show the extras. If the bright is overweight, I work on a style that would cover the overweight. How much does a designer’s wedding dress cost? Prices vary according to the style. The fabric, the design, and the costs of tailoring included, a wedding dress may cost anywhere between 2,000TL to 10,000TL. Above all, there is difference between a designer-made dress and a dress bought from any store out there. There is difference in design as well. The prices aren’t as expensive as assumed. Nevertheless, the wedding dress prices at stores are currently on the rise. Before they decide that a tailor-made design dress is expensive, they should come and talk to us. Maybe the prices aren’t as high as they think they are and maybe they change their minds. Also, the prices of designer dresses and others are almost the same. Because we are trying to be affordable in the Cyprus market, we have prices according to the budgets people have. Are you planning on entering the groom’s suit sector? This year I am starting to design groom’s suits as well. Now, the couples will be more matching.

Francolin

ıbrıs’taki en göz alıcı av türlerinden biri olan tıraş (Turaç– Francolinus francolinus) sülüngiller ailesine aittir. Görece keklikten büyük ve daha göz alıcı renklere sahiptir. Dişi ve erkekleri birbirinden oldukça farklı görünüştedir. Erkekler pek çok türde olduğu gibi çok daha göz alıcı renklere sahiptirler. Erkeğin yanağındaki beyaz leke ile siyah başı hemen kendini belli eder. Boynundaki kızıl halka ise görünüşüne renk katar. Siyah göğsü ve kahverengi sırtı ise beyaz beneklerle bezelidir. Capcanlı renkleri ile tıraş, görenleri hayran bırakmaya yeterlidir. Dişisi daha alçakgönüllü bir görünüme sahip olup, toprakla uyumlu kahve tonlarına sahip rengi sayesinde düşmanlarından daha kolay gizlenebilir. Yerleşik türlerden olan tıraş tarlalar ve çalılık alanlarda yaşamını sürdürür. Genel olarak böcekler ve tohumlarla beslenen bu kuşların erkeği sabah erken saatlerde ve akşamüstü yüksekçe bir taşa çıkıp öter. Ötüşü çok uzaklardan duyulabilir. Bu davranışı sayesinde dişileri çok uzaklardan bile olsa çağırabilir. Çiftler genellikle tek eşlidir. Bahar aylarında üreyen bireyler yuvalarını yere yaparlar. Bu nedenle tarım aktivitelerinden doğrudan etkilenirler. Dişi 10-14 kadar yumurta bırakır ve 18-20 gün sonra yavrular yumurtadan çıkar.

The Francolin, a type of settled species, survives in fields and bushy areas. In the early hours of the morning and late afternoons, the male of this bird group, which feeds on insects and seeds, sits upon a high rock and sings. His singing can be heard from far far away. It is because of this action that he can call out to the females even from far away. Couples are generally monogamous. These birds that breed during the spring make their nests in the ground. Therefore, they are directly affected by agricultural activities. The female lays 10 -14 eggs and 18-20 days later the chicks hatch.

he Francolin (Francolinus francolinus), one of the most dazzling game bird types to be found in Cyprus, belongs to the phasianidae family. It is bigger than and has many more dazzling colors than the partridge. The male and female looks differ considerably from one another. Just like many species, the male has many more dazzling colors. The white patch on the black head of the male is immediately apparent. As for the red halo around his neck; it adds color to his appearance. His black breast and brown back is decorated with white spots. With his vibrant colors the Francolin impresses all those that see him. The female who hosts a more modest look, with her brown tones of color, finds it easier to hide from her enemies.

Eskiden daha geniş bir dağılıma sahip olan tıraşın yaşam alanı aşırı avcılık nedeniyle günümüzde daralmıştır. Günümüzdeki doğal yaşam alanı Türkiye’nin güney doğusu ve Kıbrıs’tan başlayarak İran’ı da içine alacak şekilde güney batı Türkmenistan’a kadar devam eder. Yani Kıbrıs bu türün dağılımının en batı ucunda yer alır. Kafkaslar, Guam ve Hawaii’ye insanlar tarafından taşınmıştır. Avcılardan saklanma konusunda başarılıdırlar. Yerlerini belli etmezler ve fark edilmeleri zordur. Tehlike anında süzülerek uzaklaşmayı tercih ederler; mecbur kalmadıkça havalanmazlar. Bu sayede bugüne kadar varlıklarını devam ettirmeyi başarabilmişlerdir. Fakat avcılar için çok çekici bir tür olması, yasak avcılık ve tarımda kullanılan gübre ve zirai ilaçlar ve anız yakımı sebebiyle yine de sayıları hızla azalmaktadır. Özellikle Türkiye’deki popülasyonu tehlike altındadır. Türkiye’de tükenmekte olmasına rağmen Adamızdaki sayıları halen yeterli durumdadır. Bu nedenle Kıbrıs popülasyonu özellikle korunmalı ve devamlılığı sağlanacak şekilde tıraş avı kontrol altına alınmalıdır.

These days, the once wider habitat of the Francolin has narrowed down due to the over extensive activity of hunting. The present day natural habitat stretches from the southeast of Turkey, starting from Cyprus, taking in the whole of Iran, all the way through to the southwest of Turkmenistan. Hence, Cyprus is located at the westernmost end of this species’ distribution. People have moved them to the Caucasians, Guam and Hawaii. They are adept at hiding from hunters. They do not reveal where they are and are hard to discover. They prefer to slip away at the moment of danger; they do not take flight unless they have to. It is thanks to this, up to now, that they have been able to continue their existence. However, the fact that they are so attractive to hunters, illegal hunting, the use of fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture and stubble burning still means that their numbers are rapidly declining. The population in Turkey is especially at risk. Although the number has become endangered in Turkey, the number on our island is still sufficient. For this reason, the population in Cyprus should especially be protected and in order to establish the continuity of this breed, a regulation for Francolin hunting must be implemented.

ngilizcede “Sand Lily” veya “Sea Daffodil” olarak bilinen kum zambağının bilimsel adı “Pancratium maritimum”dur.

Passatempo’nun Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi Mimarlık Fakültesi, Peyzaj Mimarlığı Bölümü Öğretim Üyesi Özge Özden Fuller’den aldığı bilgiye göre, Akdeniz bölgesindeki ve Avrupa’nın güneybatısındaki sahillerdeki kumullarda yetişen kum zambakları ağustos ile ekim ayları arasında çiçeklenir. Büyük beyaz çiçeği ve güzel kokusuyla tanınan kum zambakları Bulgaristan’ın güneyinde ve Karadeniz’in kuzeyindeki Türk kıyı şeridinde yok olma tehlikesi altındadır. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta ise, Karpaz, Alagadi ve Akdeniz köyü sahillerinin kumlu plajlarında kum zambaklarına rastlamak mümkündür.

According to the information gathered by Passatempo from Özge Özden Fuller, lecturer at Near East University, Department of Landscape Architecture, sand lilies, which grow on the sand dunes around the Mediterranean region and the southwestern coasts of Europe, blossom between the months of august and October. Sand lilies are distinguished with their big white flowers and mesmerizing fragrance and unfortunately they are endangered on the southern coastline of Bulgaria and the Turkish coastline in northern Black Sea. In North Cyprus, it is possible to see sand lilies on the sandy beaches in Karpaz, Alagadi and Akdeniz village.

Eldeki verilere göre geleneksel müzik alanındaki kayıtlı en eski nota bilgileri, bizi Lüzinyan ve Venediklilerin hüküm sürdüğü 15. ve 16. yüzyıllara kadar götürebilmektedir. Kıbrıslı Türklerin sesli kayıt anlamındaki geçmişi ise bu teknolojinin bulunuşundan neredeyse yüz yıl sonra, 1970’li yıllara tarihlenmektedir. 70’li ve 80’li yıllarda HASDER (Halk Sanatları Vakfı) tarafından yapılan araştırmalar sayesinde en azından yakın geçmişin belgeleri hem yazılı hem de bant kayıtları halinde bugüne taşınırken, 2005 yılından beri araştırmacı ve müzisyen Selçuk Garanti’nin öncülüğünde etkin olan Kıbrıs Havaları Derneği de çalışmalarını bu misyonla sürdürmektedir.

According to the data in hand, the oldest recorded traditional music notes can take us all the way back to the 15th and 16th centuries when Lousignans and Venetians were governing the island. The first recording of Cypriots, however, takes place almost one century after the invention of this technology in 1970s. In 1970s and 1980s, owing to the research by HASDER (Folk Arts Foundation), at least the documents of the recent past are brought to light both as written records and as tape recordings. On the other hand, since 2005, the Cyprus Tunes Association is working to fulfill this mission, under the leadership of researcher and musician Selçuk Garanti.

The music repertoire, which is the melodic reflection of the inner voices of persons or communities, is one of the most important indicators of culture. In Anatolia, as these tunes are sang withTurkish lyrics, the musical reflection of traditions is called folk songs or türkü in Turkish language. However, in the island of Cyprus, same songs are sung in bothTurkish language and Greek language for centuries and they are called “CyprusTunes”. “Dillirga”, which is one of the most popular songs of recent years, hasTurkish lyrics, too and it is a good example of this phenomenon.

Müziğin ana unsur olarak kullanıldığı her kültürün düğün geleneğinde olduğu gibi eski Kıbrıs düğünlerinde üç farklı müzik ekibi, yerel deyimle çalgıcı grupları vardı. Düğünün başladığını yedi mahalleye duyurmak için davul ve zurna ile başlayan düğünlerde kadınlar için ayrı, erkekler için ayrı çalgıcılar eğlenceyi doruklara taşırlardı. Düğünlerde yapılan mani atışmaları dışında, ölümlerle gündeme gelen ağıtlar ve aşk, özlem gibi duygular Kıbrıs havalarının ana beslenme kaynaklarıydı. Bu havalar, tarihsel süreç içinde çeşitli sosyal koşullarda ortaya çıkabileceği gibi bölgesel ya da bireysel olaylardan da ilham alınarak dillendirilmekteydi. Örneğin Ada Türklerinin fakirlikten kırıldığı özellikle 1920, 1930 ve 1940’lı yıllarda söylendiği bilinen “Gitmem Anam Gitmem” şarkısı, uzak diyarlara parayla satılarak evlendirilen bir genç kızın ağıdını anlatırken, “Leymosun Ağıdı” ya da “Hanaylar Yaptırdım Döşedemedim” olarak bilinen bir diğer Kıbrıs havasında ise çöken bir hanayın altında kalarak ölen damadın ardından yakılan bir ağıt vardır. Düğünlerde genellikle kadınların ya da erkeklerin kendi tarzlarında mendillerle oynadıkları Sirto ve Kozan gibi havalar yanında, Arap kökenli Arabiyeler vardı. Geleneksel Kıbrıs havalarının sözleri genellikle atışma kültüründen kaynaklanan manilerden beslenmektedir. Enstrüman olarak “bu enstrüman Kıbrıs’a özgüdür” denilebilecek bir enstrümandan söz edilemez. Kıbrıs havalarında çoğunlukla keman, Batı ve Arap kökenli bir enstrüman olan udla birlikte, uda benzeyen ve Ada’da “lavudda” olarak anılan gitar gibi perdeli bir enstrüman, dilli düdük ya da halk ağzında “bigâvli” adı verilen ve Kıbrıs kamışından üretilen kaval türünden enstrümanlar, ve bunların yanında def ve “döplek” adı verilen darbuka gibi ritim sazları kullanılmaktadır. Wedding ceremonies constituted an important social substructure of Cypriot music. As is true for any other culture where music is used as the basic element, in old wedding ceremonies in Cyprus, three different music bands would be present. Wedding ceremonies would commence with the drum and the clarion announcing that the ceremony had started to streets around. A separate music band would perform for men and women, providing them with a most enjoyable night. The band, or group of musicians that came for the women, would be women or blind men. Among the names that marked the weddings of an era in Cyprus are the violin master Mehmet Ali Tatlıyay (Blind Violinist), Ahmet Becerikli and his mandolin, Ahmet Nadide with his dances and Ahmet Altıparmak with his goblet drum. Besides the poems that were told as duos during wedding ceremonies, the requiems that found life with the death of a loved one and feelings such as love and longing were the fundamental sources of Cyprus tunes. These tunes may come out at various social conditions throughout the history or they were voiced due to the inspiration that arose from personal experience. For instance, the song “Gitmem Anam Gitmem” (“I won’t go dear Mother, I won’t go”), that is known to be sang during 1920s, 1930s and 1940s when Turkish Cypriots were struggling with poverty, is a lament voiced by a young girl who was dictated to marry and settle on a faraway land for dowry. On the other hand, songs known by the names “Leymosun Ağıdı” (“Limassol Lament”) or “Hanaylar Yaptırdım Döşedemedim” (“I built houses but couldn’t furnish”) tell the story of a young groom who was trapped and killed under the wreckage of a house and died and it is indeed the requiem sang after him. Besides the folk dances Sirto and Kozan, performed at weddings by women and men with handkerchiefs in their own style, there are Arabic dances called Arabiye as well.The lyrics of traditional Cyprus tunes are generally nourished from the poems that are a part of the duet culture. As for instruments, there isn’t one that can be said to be “an indigenous instrument of Cyprus”. Cyprus tunes are generally accompanied with violin, lute, which is a Western and Arabic instrument, an instrument known in Cyprus by the name “lavudda”, which is another instrument similar to the lute and is tonal like the guitar, reed whistle or Sheppard’s pipe made from Cyprus reeds or “bigâvli”, as known by locals, and rhythm instruments such as tambourine and timbal. Wherever the origin of a particular instrument is, due to the framing of culture, it is played in a special way when it is a Cyprus tune being played. İnce, HÜADK Opera-Şan Anasanat Dalı’ndaki eğitimine 2003 yılında başladı. Bu kurumda Nilgün Akkerman (Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi Baş Sopranosu) ile şan; Gürçil Çeliktaş’la sahne; FügenYiğitgil ile opera repertuvarı ve ansambl; Murat Akar’la oyunculuk; Dr. Neslihan Değirmencioğlu ile fonetik ve diksiyon; Çetin Işıközlü’yle birlikte söyleme ve armoni; ve Burhan Önder ile solfej çalışmaları yapmış olan İnce, Ankara’dan sonra eğitimini Avrupa’da sürdürmeye karar verdi.

İnce, started her education at HÜADK Opera-Singing Department in the year 2003. Here, she studied singing with Nilgün Akkerman (Ankara State Opera and Ballet Head Soprano); stage with Gürçil Çeliktaş; opera repertory and ensemble with Fügen Yiğitgil; acting with Murat Akar; phonetics and diction with Dr. Neslihan Değirmencioğlu; singing together and harmony with Çetin Işıközlü and solfege with Burhan Önder. After her training in Ankara she decided to continue her studies in Europe.

Bir özgürlük alanı olarak gördüğü müziğin ve sahnenin büyülü dünyasına profesyonel anlamdaki ilk adımlarını, müzik eğitimcisi Yıldan Biran’dan aldığı piyano ve şan derslerinin ardından Hacettepe Üniversitesi Ankara Devlet Konservatuvarı (HÜADK) giriş sınavını başarıyla verdikten sonra atacaktı.

She perceived music as a field of freedom and the first step towards becoming a professional musician was when she started piano and singing lessons from music instructor Yıldan Birand followed by her success at the entry examination of Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory (HUADK).

2008 yılında dünyanın en prestijli kraliyet konservatuvarlarından biri olan İngiltere’nin Manchester kentindeki Kraliyet Müzik Koleji’ne (Royal Northern College of Music - RNCM) Olağanüstü Yetenek ve Potansiyel ödülü alarak girecekti. Kraliyet Müzik Koleji’nde İskoçya Kraliyet Operası sanatçısı Tenor Peter Wilson, Opera North’dan Mezzo-SopranoAnnTaylor, Royal Opera House’dan Soprano Sandra Dugdale, Berlin Müzik Okulu’ndan Thomas Schulze gibi sanatçıların öğrencisi olan Laden İnce, İngiltere’deki öğrencilik yıllarında dört komple opera eserinde rol aldı. Bunlar sırasıyla, Johann Strauss’un Die Fledermaus (Yarasa), Leos Janacek’in Katia Kabanova, Jacques Offenbach’ın La Belle Helene ile Mozart’ın La Clemenza di Tito adlı eserleriydi. İngiltere’deki egitiminin üçüncü yılında, Erasmus öğrencisi olma hakkını kazanarak operanın anavatanı İtalya’ya giderek, Verona Konservatuvarı’nda bir akademik yıl eğitim gördü. In the year 2008 she entered the Royal Northern College of Music – RNCM) in Manchester, England, which is one of the most prestigious royal conservatories of the world, with an Outstanding Talent and Potential Award. Here in the Royal Northern College of Music, she had the privilege to work with Tenor Peter Wilson from Scottish Royal Opera, Mezzo-Soprano Ann Taylor from Opera North, with Soprano Sandra Dugdale from Royal Opera House, Thomas Schulze from Berlin Music School among others. During her time in England, as a student she took part in four complete opera pieces, and these were Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Leos Janacek’s Katia Kabanova, Jacques Offenbach’s La Belle Helene and Mozart’s La Clemenza diTito respectively. In the third year of her studies in England she was granted the Erasmus award and went to Italy, the capital of opera, and had a one-year education in Verona Conservatory. Among the artists she had the opportunity to work with were Maria Noto Sokolińska (Arena di Verona) and Paolo Facincani.

Eğitimin, hele sanatla iştigal ediliyorsa hiç bitmeyen bir süreç olduğunun bilincinde olan Laden İnce, İtalya’daki Erasmus yılından sonra İngiltere’ye dönerek burada RNCM’den üstün başarı derecesiyle mezun oldu. Doğanın en güzel renklerini yansıtan Alpler’in ülkesi İsviçre’de ise sahne performansı ve yorumlama teknikleri üzerine yüksek lisans yaptı. İsviçre’deki çalışmalarında dünyanın en ünlü operalarından biri olan Milano’daki Teatro Alla Scala’da sahne almış Monica Trini’nin bireysel şan öğrencisi olan Laden İnce, burada Dramatik Koloratür Soprano repertuvarını genişletirken, Krambambuli adlı özel opera topluluğuyla konserler de verdi. İsviçre’nin Bern, Cuhr ve Lugano kentlerinde pek çok konserde yer almış olan Laden İnce, tüm performanslarında doğduğu ve büyüdüğü ülkenin adının telaffuz edilmesine büyük önem veren bir sanatçı.

Laden İnce is well aware that education is a life-long process, especially if you are engaged with art. So, after her Erasmus year in Italy, she went back to England and graduated with outstanding success from the RNCM. She completed her master’s education in Switzerland, the land of the Alps, where the colors of nature are most beautifully reflected on stage performances and interpretation techniques. During her studies in Switzerland, she was the personal singing student of Monica Trini, who took part in Teatro Alla Scala in Milan, one of the most famous operas of the world, and here, Laden İnce improved her Dramatic Coloratura Soprano repertory. At the same time ,she gave concerts with the private opera community called Krambambuli. Laden İnce took part in many concerts at various concerts in Bern, Cuhr and Lugano of Switzerland and she is very keen on making sure that her country, where she was born and brought up, is mentioned in all her performances.

Oyunculukla müziğin bir arada sunulduğu opera sanatını icra eden sanatçıların gönlünde, her zaman opera literatüründe yer etmiş önemli bir opera oyununda özel bir karakteri canlandırmak vardır. Laden İnce için bu karekter de Osmanlı sarayına atfen yazılan ve affedici kişilikleri ön plana çıkaran Mozart’ın ünlü Saraydan Kız Kaçırma eserindeki Constanze karakteridir. 13.TürksoyOperaGünleri’nde solist olarak Kuzey Kıbrıs’ı temsil eden ve 2014 yılında yeni konser projeleriyle Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki müzikseverlerin karşısında olmayı hedefleyen Laden İnce, son olarak eylül ayında Bellapais Manastırı’nda Klasikten Etniğe adlı konserde ve kasım ayında Lefkoşa’daki Cumhuriyet Konseri’nde solist sanatçı olarak sahne aldı. Dinleyicileri ile içten bir bağ kurmanın yanı sıra, sanatın görevi olan duygusal ve düşünsel iletişimi müzik yolu ile sürdürmeyi hayatında hedef olarak seçen genç soprano, önümüzdeki dönemde İsviçre’nin çeşitli kentlerinde vereceği resitallerinin hazırlıklarını sürdürüyor.

In the hearts of those who are committed to opera, where music and acting are performed together, generally there is one special piece that has proved significant in the opera literature in which they want to take part and a special character in that play that they want to portray. For Laden İnce, that character is Constanze from the famous “Abduction from the Seraglio”, or “Il Seraglio” by Mozart, which addresses the Ottoman palace and forgiving people. Laden İnce represented North Cyprus as a soloist in the 13thTürksoy Opera Days and she plans to be on stage in North Cyprus in the year 2014 with her new concert projects. The most recent events Laden İnce took part were From Classical to Ethnic at Bellapais Abbey in September and the Republic Concert in Nicosia in November where she was again the soloist. The young soprano who has set her aims to creating a genuine bond with the audience and continuing communication by means of music, both intellectually and emotionally as part of the duties of art. Now she is preparing for the recitals she will be giving in various cities in Switzerland in the coming season.

Yağış ve soğuğun aynı anda olmasından dolayı göl, gezmek açısından çok cazip değil, bir başka sefere olacak. Beş bin nüfus, gündüz tozlu, gece ıssız, bilinmezin ortasındayım sanki. Akşam ilerlerken yavaş yavaş sesler uzaklaşıyor. Bir süre sonra uzaklardan sadece köpek sesleri geliyor. Dışarısı -15 derece. Özlemişim soğuğu ama yine de bu kadar olmasaydı daha iyi olurdu. Madene doğru giderken rüzgarın ve arabanın sesinden başka bir şey duymadık. Kafamın içinde festival filmleri geçti durdu yol boyunca. Ve madene girdiğimiz anda daha giriş kapısında yüksek sesle “WishYou Were Here” karşıladı bizi. Festival filmi gerçekmiş demek. Pink Floyd her yerde.

I started writing when I took the only internet cable by the fireplace in the lobby of the best hotel of Uyuni (This is a very relative description. What is expected of the best hotel? For me, it is warmth, a clean bed, running water, I don’t expect more). Uyuni is also affected by the strikes that are taking place in Bolivia. When petrol sales ceased, vehicles also ceased working.

The hotel above the salt lake is also having difficult times regarding serving tourists. I was touched not only by the salt lake I overlooked from the plane and saw just partly, but the deserted life on the way to the mine. Those who were walking through that deserted life, those who were waiting, women who smiled with all their faces as they spoke and those curvy mountains… These altogether turn into a scene of Uyuni. The spirit of the morning was different from that of the evening.You’ll be amazed by the colors on which the sun touches time to time. Dasheens with stuffed chards Ingredients One dasheen Chard leaves ½ kg minced meat Tomatoes Tomato paste Onion One small cup of rice Oil Salt Ground black pepper ½ lemon Water

Hazırlanışı Kolokas çatlatılarak küçük parçalar halinde kesilir. Tencere içinde hafif yağda soldurulana kadar az bir süreyle çevrilen kolakas parçalarının üzerine salça eklenerek çevrilmeye devam edilir. Bu işlemin ardından üzerini hafifçe örtecek şekilde su eklenir ve kolokasın kararmaması için içine yarım limon sıkılarak pişmeye bırakılır.

Recipe The dasheen is crack-cut into small pieces. They are fried with little oil for a short while until slightly brown and then some tomato paste is added. The dasheen is cooked for a while with the paste as well. Later, pour some water up to the level where it covers the dasheen and add the juice of half a lemon to prevent the dasheen from turning black and leave it to simmer.

Dolmalar ateş üzerinden alınan tenceredeki kolakaslar üzerine düzgün bir şekilde yerleştirilerek çok az miktarda daha su eklenir ve dolmaların üzerine tencere genişliğinde bir tabak örtülerek az su le kendi buharında yaklaşık yarım saat süreyle pişirilir. Yılanyastığıgillerden, Uzakdoğu kökenli bir sebze olan kolakas, şu sıralar tam kıvamında bir ürün olduğu için bu mevsimde yenebilecek en güzel yemeklerden biri olan dolmalı kolakas, sofralarımızda yer bulabilecek en leziz yemeklerdendir.

While the dasheen is simmering, mix the minced meat, cubed tomatoes, grated onions and tomatoes, half a cup of rice and salt and pepper into a stuffing mixture and wrap the chard leaves with this stuffing. The dasheen is meanwhile removed from heat and the stuffed chard leaves are layered on top of the dasheen in the pan. Add some water and cover the stuffed leaves with a plate the same size as the pan. Do not put too much water and let the leaves be cooked with the steam for half an hour. Dasheen is a vegetable that originated in the Far East and there, it is known asTaro. As the season is just available right now dasheens and stuffed leaves is one of the best dishes of this time of the year that can constitute a part of our dinner table.

Konserinde sevilen parçalarını seslendiren sanatçı, şiirleriyle de herkesi mest etti. Konak, konserinde sık sık orkestra arkadaşlarına da takılmayı ihmal etmedi. Volkan Konak konserinde Cem Karaca, Aşık Mahzuni Şerif, Kazım Koyuncu, Neşet Ertaş ve Orhan Gencebay parçalarını seslendirdi.

The singer sang his popular songs and read some of his poems, mesmerizing his guests. Konak often joked around with the members of his orchestra. He sang songs from Cem Karaca, Aşık Mahzuni Şerif, Kazım Koyuncu, Neşet Ertaş and Orhan Gencebay.

Volkan Konak’ı izlemeye gelenler arasında Türk Yıldızları’nın pilotları da vardı. Türk Hava Kuvvetleri’nin akrobasi ekibi Solo Türk’ün bir şapkasının ve tişörtünün hediye edildiği Konak, “Siz de bizim gibi delisiniz.Yoksa yapılacak iş değil” dedi.

Among the guests who came to enjoy Volkan Konak’s performance, there were the pilots of Turkish Stars. Konak was given a hat and a t-shirt of Turkish Air Forces’ aerobatics team Solo Türk. Volkan Konak joked around with the pilots saying “You are crazy just like us. This is not a job for the sane.”

Konak, konserini “Çav Bella” ile sonlandırdı. Merit Park misafirleri Volkan Konak ile unutulmaz bir gece daha yaşadı.

Uşak Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi’nde araştırma görevlisi olarak görev yapan Türkiyeli sanatçı Ahu Akkan’ın son dönem çalışmalarının yer aldığı sergi, perdeleri çağrıştıran yüzeyler üzerine yapılmış, aralarında kendi portrelerinin de yer aldığı bir dizi kadın portresini içeriyor. Ahu Akkan, betimlediği bu yüzlerde, şiddetin özellikle kadınlar üzerindeki yıkıcı etkilerini gözler önüne sererken, aynı zamanda büyük kent yaşamının insan ruhunda yarattığı tükenmişliğe de yalın bir dille değiniyor. Girne The House’daki sergi, 2 Aralık tarihine kadar, salı günleri hariç, 11.30 – 23.00 saatleri arasında ziyaret edilebilir.

rt Rooms at The House is hosting Turkish artist Ahu Akkan’s exhibition called REFLECTION / YANSIMA that opened on 16th November , Saturday.

Turkish painter Ahu Akkan is a research assistant at Usak University Faculty of Fine Arts and this exhibition includes her most recent work. It consists of a series of women’s portraits on curtain-like backgrounds and among them are some self-portraits as well. With these faces she portrayed, Ahu Akkan reveals the destructive effects of violence especially on women and expresses how urban life consumes the human soul. In December 2011, the much liked and respected Ozseyifler family, having spent over half of their lives in England, with the experience and practice of many years, took an exciting new leap back into the food and drink industry on Nicosia’s most beautiful street, Dereboyu Street. What has become an exceptional establishment, with its versatile customer base, its energy and quality, today, Paddy’s Irish Pub & Restaurant has become one of the most visited places on Dereboyu Street, and is one of the rare locations that has permanent customers. The Ozseyifler family, which has a professional and visionary mentality, by creating a fantastic team, its architecture, concept and menu and musical infrastructure, have paved the way for everyone and provided a functional, systematic service that pays dues to its concept. The Ozesyifler family, who understands very well that success can be garnered by a good and trained team, discipline and in the same ratio how important customer relations are, to maintain continuity and standards, continuously develop themselves in this field. he Paddy’s Irish Pub’s draws attention with its décor, is made up of a high level of dark wood textures, with an interior of unique mosaic and wood floor tiles that take us way back into the past, sound proofing on the ceiling that was measured accordingly, big screens visible to all areas, satirical writings representing Ireland, pictures and accessories, the comfort of wood textured food and bar seats and its various materials and cultured upholstery, the bars magnificent wooden vision, decorated with stained glass and dim lighting. In accordance with the Irish culture and of course, concept, the staff attire, music choice, bar accessories and lighting has brought about a different kind of beauty to the place and unified it.The exterior of the establishment has a retractable canopy ceiling, wooden floors and dark wood chairs, a partially paved wall and a wooden architecture that one cannot fail to miss as they pass by the street. Paddy’s interior accommodates 40 – 50 people and has central heating, air conditioning and ventilation, and smoking is not allowed. The exterior accommodates approximately 45 people and this open space with a roof has a heating around it and smoking is allowed. In these kinds of places the respect shown for both smokers and nonsmokers has great importance. Paddy’s opening hours are 12:00 in the afternoon to closing time at 01:00 on weekdays and 02:00 during the weekend, while their kitchen closes at 24:00. Normally food offered in pubs differs in comparison to restaurants, with their menus or presentations and customers, while enjoying their drinks have a number of alternative choices of various homemade delicacies partnered with dipping sauces. The menu design was designed with the Irish flag’s colors of orange, white and green and is very appetizing, appealing and concisely expressed.

Bir pub’ın içecek menüsünde olması gereken her şey mevcut ve fiyatları çoğu bara kıyasla gerçekten makul. Özellikle bardak seçimleri, kokteyl sunumları ve içkilerin hazırlanışları oldukça profesyonel olup birçok farklı alternatif mevcut. When we take a look at the dishes; “Popcorn Chicken”, “Belfast Chicken Wings” and “Chicken Gujon” are definitely recommended in the Delicious Small Appetizers. Each of them has a different and delicious taste and goes very well with beer. The “Breaded Mushrooms” and “Kentucky Chicken Wings” that will be added at the end of November to the new menu will be added to the small appetizers. The “Village Salad” and especially the “Salmon and Avocado” salad in the Heaven’s Garden menu are among the most recommended of the salads. From the Perfect Pastas part “Penne Arrabiata” and “Chicken Linguine” are the hot sellers and are recommended to have with wine. Paddy’s Dishes are comprised of six different tastes and the most popular ones are “The Mixed Vegetable Grill” and the “Mixed Chicken Basket”. They go well with beer, wine or cocktails. You really must try Paddy’s unique, far from normal and made with a very special dough “Tex a Mex” and “St. Patrick” pizza and you may opt for beer, wine, cocktails or soft drinks with your pizza. The Burgers are Paddy’s most important, most valued and most special products and, each just as tasty as the other, are served in ten different alternatives. Each of them has a different taste, look and leave a wonderful taste in your mouth. I definitely recommend having a beer or cocktail to accompany them. “Finger Licking Huge Plates” are differently written versions of the main courses and offer eight different alternatives. Especially the “Beef Steak”, “Chicken Scarpariello” and the “Mexican Casadia” are must try signature dishes. The dessert of the day or a fruit plate is found at the end of the menu and they are the last choices that complete the menu. There is everything that needs to be on a pub’s drinks menu and in comparison to a number of bars is actually quite reasonable.Their choice of glasses, presentation of cocktails and the preparation of the drinks are quite professional and offer many alternatives. Irish whiskies and malt whiskies, all alcoholic beverages, liqueurs, raki alternatives, wines from all over the world, beers and drafts, special cocktails, popular cocktails and classic cocktails, cold and hot soft drinks… While ordering we usually opt for various dishes that can be shared, so that everyone on the table can try all the dishes and we also enjoy while getting feedback and critiques from the guests. Yeni menüye girecek olan “Panelenmiş Mantar” da bizlere denememiz amaçlı ortaya servis edildi ve özellikle bira sevenler bunu kesinlikle çok seveceklerdir. Porsiyonlar oldukça doyurucu, sunumlar iştah açıcı ve gerek yemeklerin yanında sunulan garnitürlerle gerekse dip soslarla çok uyumlu bir görüntü sergilemekteydi. Yemekler masaya çok gecikmeden geldi ve sıcaklıkları da tam olması gerektiği gibiydi. Baharatların kıvamı, dokusu ve genel olarak lezzetleri harikaydı. Özellikle “Tavuk Scarpariello”, “Paddy’nin İntikamı”, “St Patrick Pizza” ve “Tavuk Linguine” kesinlikle imzalık tabaklardı. Birçok kişiden duyduğum görüşlerden ve izlenimlerimden yola çıkarak söyleyebilirim ki, menü içeriğindeki pek çok yemeğin gerek sunumları gerekse lezzetleri müşterileri yeterince tatmin etmektedir. Paddy’s Irish Pub’ı sürekli ziyaret eden daimi müşterileri de aslında bunun en büyük kanıtıdır. Akşamları seçkin müzikler eşliğinde sunulan lezzetler ve muhteşem içecekler, keyifli maç gecelerinde coşan müşteriler, Cuma konsepti gecesinde yerinde duramayan gençler, iş çıkışı buluşan iş adamları ve gruplar halinde sohbet edip hoş vakit geçiren hanımlar... It is Tuesday and we sat at the long and high-top tables for lunch at Paddy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant and took a look at the menu. From the burgers we ordered “Paddy’s Revenge”, from the pastas “Chicken Linguine”, from the Pizzas “St. Patrick”, from the choices between “Heaven’s Garden” we chose the “Salmon and Avocado Salad”, from the “Finger Licking Huge Plates” we chose the “Chicken Scarpariello” and the “Beef Stroganoff”, coke, wine and soda. The “Breaded Mushrooms” that will be added to the new menu was served to all of us to try and beer lovers will certainly like them. The portions were filling, the presentation was appetizing, both the garniture presented with the meals and the dipping sauces presented a compatible visage. The food arrived at the table without much delay and the temperature of the food was just as it should be. The consistency and texture of the spices on the whole were delicious. The “Chicken Scarpariello”, “Paddy’s Revenge”, “St Patrick Pizza” and the “Chicken Linguine” were special signature dishes. I can safely say, from what I have heard from everybody and my own impressions, from the contents of the menu many of the dishes presentations and tastes will more than satisfy the customers. The regular customers to Paddy’s Irish Pub are actually the biggest proof of this. Wonderful drinks and tastes presented along with select music, customers reveling on enjoyable match games nights, young people who are unable to stand still at the Friday night’s concept parties, businessmen coming together after work, and groups of women chatting away and having fun… Believe me, people who do not know each other in Paddy’s are very few and it is for this reason that they see this establishment as their second home. This is the greatest win and success an establishment can gain, and this is conceived of good personal skills and happy personnel, good music choices, serving delicious food and good drinks, a clean, hygienic and attractive atmosphere and most importantly the customer crowd that comes there. 99
