Glad tidings of Early Spring Can Sarvan

Kuzey Kıbrıs kısa süren bir kışın hemen ardından erken bir bahar yaşıyor. Turist sayısında hatırı sayılır bir artışın beklendiği bu sene, aralık ayında çiçeklenmeye başlayan ağaçlar, şubatta adeta çoştu. Erken çiçeklenen ağaçların başında badem gelirken, bahçe bitikileri de erkenden çiçek açtılar.

In North Cyprus, after a short winter, comes an early spring. This year, when a significant increase is expected in the number of tourists, the trees that started blossoming in December, are overflowing in February. Almond trees are at the top of the list of trees that have blossomed early and garden plants have already blossomed as well.

Pek çok insana göre, Kıbrıs’ın en güzel mevsimi baharın erken gelmesi, yaz aylarının da uzun süreceğinin işareti. Turizmde deniz, kum, güneş turları dışında özel ilgi turizminin de haraketlendiği bir sezon beklenirken, özel ilgi turizminde sualtı turizmi, yürüyüş ve bisiklet turları gittikçe daha da ilgi görüyor.

For many people, when the best of seasons, spring comes early in Cyprus, it is a sign that it is going to be a long summer. A season of beaches, sand and sea is on the way and tourism on special interests is also on the march. Underwater tourism, hiking and bicycle tours are attracting more and more people.

Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta yerel ürünlerin tüketildiği, çevreye minumum zarar vermeyi hedefleyen, ağır ama keyifli yolculukları hedefleyen yavaş turizmin ve eko turizmin geliştiği bölgeler artık isimlerinden daha fazla bahsettirmeye başladı. Nitekim Kıbrıs’a has yemeklerin organik olarak üretildiği, küçük tatil beldelerinde kültürel zenginliklerin ülkeye gelen misafirlerle paylaşıldığı birçok etkinliğin yeni sezonda yapılması planlanıyor.

Various regions of North Cyprus where slow and eco tourism are developing, are being centre of attention recently. Slow and Eco tourism aim at minimum damage to the environment and local products are served at these regions and leisurely but slow activities are awaiting for us all. Thusly, in small holiday resorts, many activities are planned for the new season where local Cypriot dishes are prepared organically and cultural values are reflected to the guests that come to the island.

Ülkemiz erken baharla şenlenirken Kuzey Kıbrıs’a gelen misafirlerimizin de erken bahardan büyük mutluluk duyacağına eminiz.

uzey Kıbrıs’ta tango dansının ve Tango Kıbrıs Kültür Sanat Derneği’nin Kurucu eğitmenleri Pembe Gaziler & Mustafa Elmas 2001 yılından beri tango müziği ve dansıyla ilgili birikimlerini gerek Kıbrıs’ta, gerekse diğer ülkelerde, bu dansa gönül vermiş dansçı adaylarına aktarıyorlar. Adamızda pek çok ilke imza atan ve tangonun dışında, sanatçı kişilikleriyle de oldukça tanınan ve büyük başarılarda adı geçen bu güzel çiftle Passatempo okuyucuları için keyifli bir sohbet gerçekleştirdik. Bazı soruları birbirlerinden habersiz yanıtlayan çiftin yanıtları da birbirlerini mükemmel bir biçimde nasıl tamamladıklarını gösterdi. Keyifle okumanızı dileriz.

embe Gaziler & Mustafa Elmas, founders of Tango Cyprus Culture and Art Association are tango trainers in Cyprus, who have been sharing their knowledge on tango music and dance with those interested, in both North Cyprus and abroad, since 2001. We had a pleasant chat with this beautiful couple, who brought in many things to our island and are famous as artists besides what they do regarding tango and are well known for their many successful endeavours. They answered some of the questions independently and their answers show how perfectly they complete each other. We wish you a pleasant read.

Pembe Gaziler ve Mustafa Elmas kimdir? P.G: 1978’de Sidney’de doğdum. 1999’da Hacettepe Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Seramik bölümünden mezun oldum ve 2003’te aynı bölümde yüksek lisansımı tamamladım. 2010 yılında ise Barcelona’da Modern Sanatlar ve Sanat Terapisi üzerine yüksek lisansımı tamamlayıp Adamıza geri döndüm. Şu anda Değirmenlik Lisesi’nde Teknoloji ve Tasarım öğretmenliği; Tango Kıbrıs Kültür Sanat Derneği Dernek Başkanlığı ve Naci Talat Vakfı Barış ve Dostluk Evi Kültür & Sanat Koordinatörlüğü görevlerini sürdürmekteyim. ”Terra Rosa Art & Therapy Studio” isimli atölyemde sanat çalışmalarıma devam ediyorum ve aynı zamanda Terra Rosa isimli kendi oluşturduğum moda tasarımlarımın üretimini yine bu atölyemde yapıyorum. M.E: 1978 yılında Lefkoşa’da doğdum. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Ankara Devlet Konservatuvarı’ndan 1999 yılında mezun olduktan sonra 5 yıl Güvenlik Kuvvetleri askeri bandosunun şefliğini yaptım. 2005 yılında 1 yıl süreyle o zaman henüz kapatılmamış olan DAU Müzik Bölümü’nde Kompozisyon (bestecilik) dersleri verdim. 2006 yılından beridir Lefkoşa Anadolu Güzel Sanatlar Lisesi’nde orkestra, armoni, müzik biçimleri ve piyano dersleri vererek öğretmenlik yapmaktayım.

Who are Pembe Gaziler and Mustafa Elmas? P.G: I was born in Sydney in 1978. I graduated from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Ceramics in 1999 and in 2003 I completed my master’s degree in the same department. In 2010 I completed another master’s degree in Barcelona, on Contemporary Fine Arts and Art Therapy and returned to the island. Currently, I am teaching Technology and Design at Degirmenlik High School; I am the president of Tango Cyprus Culture and Art Association and Culture and Art Coordinator of Naci Talat Foundation, House of Peace and Fellowship. Besides, I am continuing my art studies at my workshop called “Terra Rosa Art & Therapy Studio”, where I also do the production of my own fashion designs, I branded as Terra Rosa. M.E: I was born in Nicosia in 1978. After I graduated from Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory in 1999, I served as the bandmaster of Security Forces Military Band for five years. For one year, in 2005, I taught composition at EMU Music Department, which wasn’t closed yet then. Since 2006, I’ve been teaching orchestra, harmony, music styles and piano at Nicosia Anatolian School of Fine Arts.

Tangoyla tanışmanız nasıl oldu? PG: Tangoyla teorik anlamda tanışmam 1999 yılında Ankara’da öğrenciyken izlediğim Carlos Saura’nın ‘Tango’ filmiyle oldu; o filmden sonra hayatımda tangonun mutlaka yer alması gerektiğini hissettim. Ve yıllar sonra bu hayali Mustafa Elmas’la birlikte gerçekleştirebildim. ME: 1999 yılında Carlos Saura’nın ‘Tango’ filmini Pembe Gaziler ile birbirimizden bağımsız olarak izledik. Benim dikkatimi filmin müzikleri çekti. İlk kez tango müziğini duydum ve ‘benim yapmak istediğim müzik bu’ dedim. Hemen bu müziği derinlemesine araştırmaya başladım ve küçük gruplar için notalar yazmaya başladım. Daha sonra tango orkestrasını kurduk. İstanbul’daki ilk konserimizden sonra da bizi davet eden organizatörler Aydoğan-Şule Arkış çiftinin desteği ve tavsiyesiyle dans dersleri de almaya başladık. Sonrası çok hızlı gelişti ve 11 yılda hem orkestra hem de tango eğitmenleri olarak yabancı ülkelerden davetler almaya kadar ilerledi.

How was your first encounter with tango? PG: My first theoretical encounter with tango was in 1999, during the time I was a student in Ankara, when I watched Carlos Saura’s movie called ‘Tango; it was after that movie that I believed that tango should be a part of my life. And after many years, that dream came true with Mustafa Elmas. ME: I watched Carlos Saura’s movie called ‘Tango’ in 1999 but we watched it independently from each other with Pembe Gaziler. The soundtracks of the movie attracted my attention. It was the first time I had heard of tango music and I remember saying ‘this is the music I want to make’. I started investigating the music in detail and writing music for small groups. Then we established the tango orchestra. After our first concert in Istanbul, upon the advice and support of organisers Şule & Aydoğan Arkış, we started taking tango lessons.Then everything happened so fast and in eleven years we came all the way up to the point where we receive invitations from abroad as both tango instructors and orchestra.

Peki ya birbirinizle tanışmanız? Öğrenciliğimizde ikimiz de aynı yıllarda Ankara’da bulunduk ve Üniversite Temsilciler Konseyi (ÜTK)’nin etkinliklerinde tanıştık, fakat birlikte dans etmeye başlamadan önce aramızda özel bir iletişim olmadı. Tangoya başladıktan 2 yıl sonra çıkmaya başladık.

How did you two meet each other? We were in Ankara when we were students and we met at one of the events organised by University Students’ Representative Council but there wasn’t a special communication between us until we started dancing. We started dating two years after we started tango.

Sizi yakından tanıyan ve gerek yaşam tarzınıza, gerekse duruşunuza oldukça saygı duyan biri olarak Pembe Hanım’ın çok başarılı bir seramik sanatçısı, Mustafa Bey’in de çok iyi bir müzisyen olduğunu biliyorum. Tango’nun yanında seramikle müzik de devam ediyor mu? P.G: Evet, zaman zaman tango ve sanat yaşamımdaki dengeler ağırlık değiştirse de sanatsal yaratı sürecimden hiç uzaklaşmadım. Finlandiya, Kanada, Litvanya, İtalya, İspanya, Türkiye ve Kıbrıs’ta düzenlenen karma sergilerde eserlerim yer aldı. İlk kişisel sergim Lefkoşa’da 2004’teki “Toprak Denizi Sezdi” isimli sergimdi, ardından 2010 yılında “Muy Fragile” isimli 2. kişisel

As a person who knows you well and someone who respects your lifestyle and point of view, I know for a fact that Pembe Gaziler is a very successful ceramics artist and Mustafa Elmas is a very good musician. Are ceramics and music still ongoing besides tango? P.G: Yes, even though the balance between tango and art changes at times, I was never away from my artistic creativity. My work took part in group exhibitions in Finland, Canada, Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Cyprus. My first individual exhibition was in Nicosia in 2004 and it was titled “The Earth Felt The Sea”. Then, my second individual exhibition opened in 23

sergimi Barcelona’da açtım ve 3. sü ise geçtiğimiz ay Stockholm’de açılışını yaptığım “See The Sea” isimli sergimdi. 2011 yılında ise “Collision 2011” isimli Uluslararası Modern Sanat Sergisinin küratörlüğünü yaptım. Şu anda ise Terra Rosa Art & Therapy Studio’sunda aldığım iki eğitimi birlikte kullanarak seramikle sanat terapisi çalışmalarımı sürdürüyorum. M.E: Müzik çalışmaları tabii ki aktif olarak devam etmekte. Öğrencilerimle hazırladığımız klasik müzik konserleri yanında, Tango orkestramızla her yıl en az 2 uluslararası festivalde sahne alıyoruz, Güney ve Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki en büyük festivaller yanında, son 6 yıldır Türkiye, Ürdün, İsveç, Norveç gibi ülkelerde yer alan uluslararası tango festivallerinde sahne alıyoruz. Ayrıca reklam, belgesel ve filmler için müzikler besteliyorum.

Barcelona in 2010 and it was called “Muy Fragile”, and last month my third exhibition “See the Sea” opened in Stockholm last month. In 2011, I was the curator of an International Contemporary Art Exhibition “Collision 2011”. Currently, merging two trainings I received, I am working on art therapy with ceramics at Terra Rosa Art & Therapy Studio. M.E: Of course my work on music is ongoing. Besides the classical music concerts we give with my students, our tango orchestra attends at least two international festivals each year. Apart from the biggest festivals in South and North, for the last six years, we took stage at international tango festivals in Turkey, Jordan, Sweden and Norway. In addition I compose theme music for advertorials, documentaries and films.

Örnek bir sanatçıda mutlaka bulunması gereken özellikler sizce nelerdir? P.G.: Örnek bir sanatçıdan ziyade örnek bir bireyde bulunması gereken en önemli özelliklerden birinin, yaptığı iş ne olursa olsun kişinin işine duyduğu saygı ve verdiği değer olmalıdır diye düşünüyorum. Sanatçı kimliği açısından ise; vizyonu geniş bir dünya görüşüyle birlikte özgünlüğü kullanabilmek önemli özelliklerdir bence. Yapılan işteki samimiyet de ekleyebileceğim bir başka etkendir. M.E.: Kişi, ‘Sanatçı olmaya’ değil üretmeye odaklanmalı ve ürettiği alanda çok takıntılı olmalıdır. Tabii ki ürettiği alanda dünyada neler olup bittiğini çok iyi takip ederek kalite anlamında sadece çevresini değil dünyayı tanıyıp onun ilerisine geçmeyi hedeflemelidir. Gerisi gelir.

What are the characteristics that a model artist should have, in your opinion? P.G.: In my opinion, a model person, not just an artist, should respect and value his or her job or occupation whatever it is. As for the person’s artistic identity, I believe it is important to be able to use one’s freedom and have a wide vision. Another feature I can add would be the honesty and sincerity in the job being carried out. M.E.: The person should focus on producing not ‘being an artist’ and be committed to whatever it is that he or she is producing. Of course, they should fallow closely what is going on in his or her field in the world and aim to go beyond what has already been done by means of quality. The rest will follow.

Dünyadaki diğer ülkelerle karşılaştırdığımız zaman Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta tango nerededir? Genel olarak Türkiye yanında Avrupa ve Ortadoğu bölgesindeki tüm tango topluluklarıyla organik bağımız var ve işbirliği içinde çalışıyoruz. Tüm dünyayı gezen en iyi eğitmenler ve orkestralar bizim davetlimiz olarak ülkemize gelip dersler ve performanslar veriyorlar. Organizasyon kalitesi açısından dünyayla aynı kaliteyi ısrarla sürdürüyoruz.

Compared to other countries in the world, where does tango stand in North Cyprus? We can say that we have organic bonds with all tango groups in Turkey as well as Europe and Middle East and we work in cooperation. The best instructors, who travel around the world, come out country, as our guests and give training and stage performances. Regarding organisation quality, we are persistent on the same level with the rest of the world.

Dans eden kesimin davranışlarını karşılaştıracak olursak her ülkenin kendi sosyal ve kültürel yapısına göre bir tango geliştirmekte olduğu gerçeği ortaya çıkıyor. Bu açıdan bakınca Kuzey Avrupa’da çok düzenli ve insanların kendilerini geliştirmeye çok önem verdikleri bir kültür olduğundan aynı etkiyi sosyal dans pistinde de gözlemleyebiliyorsunuz. Güney Avrupa’ya indikçe insani özellikler gibi tango da biraz daha sıcaklaşıyor, fakat eşitlikten biraz uzaklaşarak hem erkek ve kadın rollerinin belirginleştiğini görüyoruz hem de dans seviyesi farkı olanlar arasında daha rekabetçi bir hal aldığını. Buna rağmen insanların kendini geliştirmeye olan ilgisi çok yüksek ve dans seviyesi çok iyi.

If we compare the acts and attitudes of the dancing groups, it is apparent that each country develops a tango based on their own social and cultural structures. When looked from that perspective, as the culture in Northern Europe is very strictly structured and focused on self development of persons, you can actually observe the same thing on the social dance stage as well. As you go down to Southern Europe, tango gets warmer. However, it drifts away from equality a little bit and the male and female roles become more apparent, just as the different levels of proficiency between the couples do too. We can say that it becomes more competitive. In spite of all this, everyone is very keen on being better and the level of dancing skills is very high.

As we go towards the East, things get a bit more complicated. Both those who do this as an occupation and those who dance for recreational purposes, have different senses of discipline and ethics and different learning habits. Here, even though some people have very

rağmen, genellikle çalışıp gelişerek daha mutlu olmak yerine olduğu kadarıyla yetinip mutlu olmak eğilimindedirler. Dolayısıyla çalışan insanlar çok çabuk gelişip dünya çapına çıkıyor fakat büyük bir kesim, dans eden insanların oranına göre vasat bir seviyede keyifle dansını sürdürüyor. Tabi ki bunun bir sakıncası yok sonuçta insanlar keyif için ve keyifle dans ediyor.

high learning capacities, instead of learning more and becobetter to feel better, they generally tend to settle for whatever they have. Thus, those who work hard, become better rapidly and go out and join the rest of the world, but considering the number of people who dance, a large number of people happily dance at average level. Of course, by no means this is bad, cause people dance for pleasure with pleasure.

Küçükken model aldığınız biri var mıydı? P.G: Hiç kendime model aldığım bir idolüm olmadı... M.E: Hatırlayamadım. Varsa bile çok ciddi değilmiş herhalde.

Is there someone you looked up to when you were a kid? P.G: I never had an idol I looked up to... M.E: I can not seem to remember. Even if there was, apparently he/she want very influential.

Hayatınızdaki en büyük idealiniz neydi ? Bunu gerçekleştirdiniz mi? Gerçekleştirmediyseniz ne kadar uzağındasınız ? P.G: Sanırım bugüne kadar hayalini kurduğum her şeye sahibim... Lise yıllarımda sanat eğitimi hedefim vardı gerçekleşti, yüksek lisansım bitince bir Avrupa ülkesinde sanat eğitimi hayalim vardı, onu da olabilecek en güzel şehir Barcelona’da gerçekleştirdim. Lefkoşa içinde bir atölye hayalim vardı ona da sahibim, annemden bana kalan yaratıcılık ve tasarım konusundaki özelliklerimi insanlarla paylaşmak hedefim vardı, ki Terra Rosa Fashion Design şu anda soluk alan bir isim oldu. Tangoda ve sanatta uluslararası etkinliklere imza atabilmek önemli hedeflerimdi, gerçekleşenler ve gerçekleşmeye devam eden projelerimiz var. What was your biggest ideal in life? Have you realized it? If not, how far do you think you are away from it? P.G: I think I own everything I dreamt of. When I was in high school I dreamt of going to art school; it happened; after I completed my master’s degree, I wanted to go abroad for training in a European country, I did that too, in the most beautiful city that could be, in Barcelona. I dreamt of having a studio in Nicosia’s old town, I have that too. I wanted to share with others the creativity and design skills that I inherited from my mother, and Terra Rosa Fashion Design is now a name with flesh and blood. Taking important parts in tango and international artistic activities were among my important goals; they have either already been realised or they are still projects in progress. Most importantly, I have happy and healthy family and social relations, and these are my

Tabii ki bir ideale ulaşınca hemen bir yenisi beliriyor ve ona nasıl ulaşacağını planlamaya başlıyor insan. Şu andaki idealim başarılı bir filmin müziklerini besteleyebilme şansına sahip olmak. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta genel olarak sanata ve sanatçıya olan ilgi sizce nasıldır ? Öncelikle Kıbrıs’taki sanatsal gelişim sürecinden biraz bahsetmek istiyorum. Son yıllarda her şeye rağmen, Kıbrıs’ta sanatsal üretkenlik konusunda önemli gelişmeler olduğuna inanıyorum ve sanat eğitimi almış gençler Ada’ya dönmeye devam ettikleri sürece bu enerji paylaşımının kollektif sanat yaşamımıza olumlu katkıları olacağına inanıyorum. I believe that there has been some major developments in Cyprus regarding artistic productivity in recent years, in spite of everything and it is my belief that as long as young people who graduate from fine arts departments continue to come back to the island, this energy flow and sharing will contribute to our collective art life. Of course the education system needs a lot of work for a consumer group that can differentiate quality and that demands it. People should persistently demand every field of art and quality pieces of art from artists. What we need, besides individuals of the social community to be interested in art, is institutions, ministries, governments and municipalities to approach art and artists according to

It is said that sometimes insignificant moments bear great happiness. Do you have a special moment that heralded great bliss? ME: On my way back to Cyprus after the first tango lesson I attended with Argentinean trainers in Istanbul, on the plane, I said to my friend ‘As soon as I get back to Cyprus, I am going to find a partner and start working very hard’. He said ‘That will not be that easy. How are you going to find someone who takes tango so seriously? It’s impossible’. The plane landed, we passed through passport control and I saw Pembe, who had come to meet her sister, who was on the same plane with us. When I said I attended a tango course, she was quite interested and when she said she also was looking for a tango school, I looked at her feet and tried to guess her shoe size, and immediately ordered pink striped tango shoes from Istanbul. In North Cyprus, there are young people who practice in various fields of art that look up to you in a way. What would you like to advise these young people? They must consistently produce without letting the negative conditions of the country discourage them. they should ignore criticisms and they shouldn’t expect to be appreciated.They should be confident and keep on producing genuinely. In time, everything will find its way.

dağ tırmanışı ile zirveye çıkıp, Esentepe’ye doğru tabelaları takip ederek ulaşabilecekleri bu muhteşem tarihi kilise, 12’nci yüzyılda inşa edildi. Bizans Dönemi’nden kalma bazı duvar ikonlarının çalındığı bilinmekle birlikte; içerisindeki ikonlar ve ikon kalıntıları hâlâ paha biçilmez değerde, güzelliktedirler. Antifonidis Manastırı Esentepe köy merkezine yaklaşık 4.5 - 5 kilometre uzaklıkta, köyün Güney doğusunda yer alır. 12’nci yüzyılda yapılan bu manastır adadaki en mükemmel manastırlardan biridir… Belki de en mükemmelidir… Bizans mimarisine uygun olarak sekiz sütun üzerine oturtulmuş bir kuleden oluşur. Bu sütunlardan dört tanesinin Lüzinyanlar’dan kaldığı da söylenir. Manastır içerisindeki loca, kendi döneminin en mükemmel mimari örneğidir. Kilsenin ana kulesi içerisindeki İsa resmi, meraklıların çok büyük ilgisini çekmektedir… Nefis bir konumda, mükemmel bir deniz manzarası olan kilise, geçtiğimiz yıllara kadar bahçesinde, ülkenin tek “buhur ağacı”nı da barındırıyordu. Ancak bakımsızlık ve ilgisizlik, bu değerli ağacın yok olmasına, kuruyup gitmesine sebep oldu.

Although it is well known that certain wall icons from the Byzantine era were stolen, icons and icon remains still there are priceless and of outstanding beauty. The Antifonidis Moanstry is approximately four and a half to five kilometers to the Esentepe village centre, situated in the south of the village. This monastry which was built in the 12th Century is one of the most perfect monastries of the country... Possibly the most perfect one in all... Adhering to Byzantine architecture, it is formed of a tower that sits upon eight pillars. It is said that four of these pillars were left by the Lusignans. The chamber inside the monastery is the most perfect example of its time’s architecture. The picture of Jesus that resides within the church’s main tower draws ample attention from its enthusiasts… The church which is situated superbly and looks out upon a perfect sea view, until last year, had the only “frankinsense tree” in its garden in the whole country. However, neglect and lack of nurturing led to this tree drying up and dying. 33

Kilisenin, 12’nci yüzyılda Anadolu’dan geldiğine inanılan “Andifonidis” ya da “Anthipanitis” adlı keşiş tarafından yapıldığı söylenir… Kilise duvarlarında, çok uzun yıllardan, hatta asırlardan beri var olan “grafitti”ler yani duvar yazıları da dikkat çekmektedir… Bu duvar yazıları Türkçe, İngilizce ve Elence’dir… Kuzey Kıbrıs’a tatile gelenler, hatta bu ülkede yaşayanlar; muhteşem kiliseyi, manzarasını ve yerleştirildiği muhteşem güzellikteki vadiyi mutlaka ziyaret etmelidirler… Kilise yanındaki büfede mesai saatlerinde kahve, çay veya soğuk bir şeyler bulabilirsiniz… Ama size tavsiyemiz; sıkı bir piknik sepeti hazırlayıp, buraya gitmeniz ve bölgedeki herhangi bir çam ağacının altında, atmosferin de keyfini çıkarmanızdır… Yazın ve kışın ziyaret edilebilecek bu bölge, içinde bulunduğumuz günlerde, orkideleri ile de ünlüdür… Kilisenin bahçesinde, birbirinden ilginç orkideleri de görme şansınız vardır…

It is said that the church was built by an explorer named “Andifonidis” or “Anthipanitis”, who came to the island from Anatolia in the 12th Century… On the church walls, for many years or in fact for what has been centuries are remains of “graffiti” that also draws a great deal of attention… These wall writings are in Turkish, English and Lence… Those that come to Cyprus, or in fact those that live here, should most definitely visit the fantastic church, its view and the stunningly beautiful valley it resides in… During working hours you may find coffee, tea or cold drinks at the stall near the church… But we strongly recommend you prepare a full picnic hamper yourself and settle down beside any one of the pine trees in the area and take in the pleasure of the atmosphere that surrounds you… This area that can be visited both during the winter and the summer, at this precise moment in time is also famous for its orchids… You will find the opportunity to see many different and interesting orchids in the church’s garden…

ZIVANIA IN NORTH CYPRUS

ivaniya, Kıbrıs’ın şüphesiz en karakteristik içkisidir. Bu enteresan içki, Kıbrıslıların sadece muhabbete lezzet katmak amacıyla içki masalarında değil, şifa için de kullandıkları bir içki olup; gerek yapılışı gerekse tüketilmesiyle Kıbrıs’ın ve Kıbrıslının kültürünü yansıtır. Hatta Zivaniya’nın eski zamanlarda, özellikle Baf ve civarındaki köylerde, bir nevi erkeklik testi olarak kullanıldığı ve kendini kanıtlamak isteyen gençlerin ailelerinin yanında bu içkiden içtiği de söylenmektedir.

ivania, is without doubt the most characteristic drink of Cyprus. This interesting spirit is used not only as a part of joyous conversations but as a cure for some diseases and illnesses as well. Both by means of production and consumption, it reflects the culture of Cyprus and Cypriots. It is even said that, in old times, especially in Paphos and surrounding villages, Zivania was used as a show of manhood and young men who wanted to prove themselves would drink Zivania when with their families.

Zivaniya’nın yapılışı Ada’da 14. yüzyıldan beri üretilmekte olan Zivaniya, Kıbrıs’ta yetişen üzüm ve ender de olsa diğer meyvelerden yapılmaktadır. Üzüm Zivaniyası dışında en ünlü Zivaniya, İncir Zivaniyasıdır ve bunun rengi, şeffaf olan Üzüm Zivaniyası’nın aksine kırmızı veya pempe tonlardadır.

The Production of Zivania Zivania has been produced in the Island since the 14th century, from the grapes and seldom other fruits that are grown here in Cyprus. The most popular Zivania is produced from grapes and the second most popular is Fig Zivania, which is, unlike the grape Zivania, which is clear, reddish or pinkish in colour.

Üzüm posasından elde edilen Zivaniya yapımı için posalar 15 gün süreyle bekletilir ve bu süre zarfında posalar mayalanır. Daha sonra bu posalar bir kazana konulup kazanın altına meşe dalı döşenir ki kazan doğrudan ateşle temas etmesin. Daha sonra bu kazanın kapağı kapatılır ve buharın dışarıya çıkmasını önlemek amacıyla bu kapağın kenarları hamurla kaplanır. Böylece kuruyan hamur, kazandan buhar çıkmasını engeller. Kaynamaya başlayan posaların buharı kazana boruyla bağlı bir başka kazana geçer ve bu kazandaki soğuk su, buharı soğutarak buharın damla damla Zivaniya’ya dönüşmesini sağlar. Zivaniya’nın en önemli özelliği bu içkide hiçbir katkı maddesinin olmamasıdır. Zivaniya’nın fabrikada üretilenleri % 40 oranında bir alkole sahipken, yukarıda anlattığımız geleneksel usulle üretilenleri % 60- 70 oranında alkole sahip olabilmektedir. Günümüzde Mehmetçik Köyü, Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta Zivaniya yapımında oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir.

The pulp of grapes is what Zivania is got from. The pulps are left for fifteen days and in this period they are fermented. Later, the pulps are put in a large cauldron and the cauldron is placed on top of a bed of oak tree branches, which protect the cauldron from direct fire. The cauldron’s lid is than closed and fixed with dough to prevent the steam from escaping; the dough dries and hardens, keeping the steam in the cauldron. The steam of the pulp is transferred into another cauldron with a pipe between two cauldrons. The cold water in the second cauldron condenses the steam and turns it into drops of Zivania. The most important feature of this drink is that it has no additives. Those manufactured in factories have 40% alcohol, while those produced with traditional techniques, as described above, can have up to 60-70% alcohol. Nowadays, the village of Mehmetçik, has an important place in Zivania production in North Cyprus.

Zivaniyanın tüketilmesi Zivaniya, eğer keyif için, içki masasında tüketilecekse kesinlikle soğuk içilmesi gereken bir içkidir. Alkol oranı çok yüksek olan bu içkiyi gönül rahatlığıyla buzluğunuzun dondurucu kısmına koyup burada unutabilirsiniz; çünkü donması söz konusu bile değildir. Zivaniya’nın bir başka özelliği, ‘bodiri’ denilen küçük bardaklarda sek olarak sunulması ve küçük yudumlar halinde içilmesidir. Her ne kadar bodiriler küçük olsa da Meksikalılar’ın geleneksel içkisi Tequila gibi tek dikişte içilmesi kesinlikle tavsiye edilmez. Keza, ufak atıştırmalıklar da Zivaniya’ya eşlik etmelidir.

The consumption of Zivania It it is to be drunk for pleasure, it must be chilled. As the percentage of alcohol is very high, you can put it in the freezer and forget it there your mind at peace because it can, by no means freeze. Another characteristic of the drink is that it is served sec in small glasses called ‘bodiri’, that resemble shot glasses, and is drunk is small sips. Even though the glasses are small, it is definitely not advised to drink Zivania as a shot like the traditional Mexican drink tequila. Also, small servings of appetisers must accompany Zivania.

Geleneksel bir Zivaniya sofrasının olmazsa olmazları şu şekilde özetlenebilir: Köfter: Üzüm şırasıyla nişastanın kaynatıldıktan sonra tepsilere dökülüp kesilmesi ve ardından da kurutulmasıyla yapılan bir çeşit pestildir. Acı bir tadı olan Zivaniya’nın daha rahat içilmesini sağlar. Gırbaç: Nor peyniri veya yeni doğurmuş küçükbaş hayvanın kesik sütünden elde edilen ‘ağız’a bal veya pekmez karıştırılarak yapılan, ceviz veya badem kırıklarıyla süslenen bir çeşit tatlıdır. Bu iki tatlı dışında, pide arasında ızgara hellim ve sucuk, çakıstes, tahin-limon, tuzla kurutulup kekikle tatlandırılan samarella gibi geleneksel Kıbrıs mezeleri ve kebaplar (özellikle kuyruk yağı katılarak yapılan fırın kebabı) da Zivaniya’nın acı tadına lezzet katan tadlar arasında sayılabilir.

A traditional feast of Zivania includes these appetisers: Köfter: This is a kind of paste, made from slightly fermented grape juice and starch. The juice and starch are boiled, poured into flat trays, cut and dried. It sooths Zivania’s bitter taste. Gırbaç (Whip): This dessert is made from curd cheese or green cheese from sheep that has recently given birth, mixed with honey or molasses and topped with nuts or almonds or both. Besides these two desserts, grilled hallumi and pastrami in pita, green olives with coriander seeds and garlic, sesame oil and lemon juice, samarella, which is salted, sun dried meat and herbs and other traditional Cypriot mezes and kebabs (especially mutton stew with fat) can all be among snacks that you can have with Zivania.

Savaş zamanlarında, ciddi soğuk algınlıklarında bu içki ısıtılır, içine limon ve bal katılır ve tadı ciddi anlamda kötü olan bu karışım hastaya içirilirdi. Bunun yanında soğuk alğınlığından muzdarip kişileri terletmek amacıyla Zivaniya’nın vücuda sürüldüğü de bilinmektedir.

As we mentioned above, Zivania is also used for healing purposes since ancient times. During the war, for serious flu cases, this drink would be heated and mixed with lemon juice and honey and the sick person would drink this mixture with an awful taste. It is also known that Zivania is used as a rub on the sick person’s body to make him or her sweat.

ir zamanlar, Kıbrıs’ta birbirini çok seven iki kardeş varmış. Bu iki kardeş, babalarının ölümüyle kendilerine miras olarak kalan tarlayı bir türlü pay edememiş. İki kardeşin aralarında ciddi kavgalar çıkmış, akrabaları ise onları uzlaştırmakta yetersiz kalmış.

nce upon a time, in Cyprus, there were two brothers who loved each other very much. After their father’s death, these two brothers were unable to share the land left to them by their father. As a result, terrible fights broke out between the two brothers, and the family members were unable to pull them apart.

Bu iki kardeş günlerce tarlada yatıp tarlada kalkmış, evlerine gidemez olmuş. Neticede kardeşlerden büyük olanı, küçüğü öldürme planları yapmaya başlamış. Bir fırsatını bulan, büyük kardeş, küçüğü tam öldüreceği anda tarla dile gelmiş:

For days and days, these two brothers slept in the field, unable to return to their homes. As it so happened, the elder brother started making plans about murdering the younger one. At precisely the moment the elder brother found his opportunity to kill his younger brother the field came to life and said:

“ Ey mal sahibi, mülk sahibi Hani benim ilk sahibim O da yalan, bu da yalan Var biraz da sen oyalan.”

“Thou who owns land, who owns property Where now lies my first owner This and that, all trivial things Time will also pass for you.”

Bunun üzerine büyük kardeş, küçüğü öldürmekten vazgeçmiş, babalarından kalan tarlayı adil bir biçimde paylaşmışlar ve ölene dek aralarından su sızmamış, mutlu ve huzurlu bir biçimde geçinip gitmişler.

Upon this incident the elder brother desisted from killing his younger brother and the two brothers divided their fathers land among themselves in a just manner, never again letting anything come between them, they lived their lives peacefully and happily ever after.

Kıbrıs insanı, genellikle güler yüzlü ve neşeli mizacıyla bilinmektedir. Cypriots are generally known to be jolly and cheerful people. So, when someone comes across a Cypriot who looks upset or worried, he or she says “What happened man, are you left in a cave with nine children?” and tries to remind him or her that, things aren’t as bad as they may seem or that things could have been much worse. The version used in Turkey for this saying is “Have your ships sunk in the Black Sea?”

uring these days, when the warm but not broiling spring sun is winking in the skies of the Island, mountain hikes are very convenient for those who want to be engaged with a sports activity. During these long and zestful walks, you will get the chance to look at the island from many different points of view, you will see plants you had never seen before and you will be dizzied by pleasant smells and the fresh mountain air. Moreover, during the feast after the walk, you will have the opportunity to meet Islanders who have set their hearts on mountaineering.

Passatempo ekibi olarak, Dağcılık Spor Derneği üyeleriyle beraber Serdarlı - Görneç’teki muhteşem manzara eşliğinde dağ yürüyüşlerine katıldık ve dağcılık hakkında zengin bilgiler edindik.

As the Passatempo team, we joined the members of Mountaineering Sports Association for a walk around the villages of Serdarli and Görneç, and learned useful information on hiking and climbing while we enjoyed the magnificent view.

Dağcılık, dağlarda yürüyüş yapmak ve kamp kurmanın yanında tırmanma sporunu da kapsayan, salon sporlarından çok daha keyifli olan bir doğa sporudur. 20. yüzyıl başlarında diğer spor türlerinin popülerleşmesiyle birlikte, bu spor ilgi kaybetmesine karşın günümüzde yeniden yaygınlaşmaya başlamıştır. Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki popülaritesini ise Dağcılık Spor Derneği bünyesinde sürdürmektedir. Dernek üyelerinden, sırf dağ yürüyüşü yapmak için Adamıza gelen turistler olduğunu dahi öğrendik. Aldığımız bilgilere göre, dağ yürüyüşlerine en fazla İngiliz turistler rağbet göstermektedirler.

Mountaineering, which is a nature sport, is a much pleasurable sports activity than closed are sports and it includes hiking and camping on the mountains as well as climbing. In the 20th century, when other sports types became popular, mountaineering lost its popularity, but it is becoming widespread again nowadays. Its popularity in North Cyprus is within the body of Mountaineering Sports Association. We even found out that there are tourists who visit the island just for mountain hiking. According to the information we got, mountain hiking is mostly favoured by British tourists.

Dünyada uygulanan çeşitli dağcılık stilleri bulunma-sına karşın Ada’da en yaygın olanı, ‘Hiking’ adı ve-rilen stildir. Hiking, günübirlik olarak yapılan dağ yürüyüşleridir ve kamp ya da konaklama içermez. Bu yürüyüş ve tırmanma stili yapay yöntemlerden uzaktır.

Although there are many different mountaineering styles in the world, the most popular style on the Island, is the style called ‘hiking’. ‘Hiking’ is the name given to one-day mountain walks and it does not include camping or overnight stays. This hiking and climbing style does not involve any artificial methods.

Dağcılık Spor Derneği tarafından düzenlenen dağ yürüyüşleri, yaz dönemlerinde 07.00’de bahar ve kış dönemlerinde ise 07.30’da başlamaktadır. Dernek tarafından Ada’da işaretlenmiş, farklı zorluk derecelerinde 65’e yakın parkur bulunmakta olup bu parkurların uzunluğu 1 ile 40 km arasında değişmektedir.

The hiking sessions organised by Mountaineering Sports Association start at 07:00 am during summer season and at 07:30 during spring and winter seasons. The Association has marked around sixty five different hiking paths, which are of different difficulty levels and vary between 1 and 40 kilometres in length.

Yürüyüş esnasında keklik, tavşan, tilki gibi hayvanları görmek ayrı bir keyif ve ayrıcalıktır. Bu yürüyüşlerde bir an durun ve ciğerlerinizi temiz dağ havasıyla doldurun; vücudunuza salgılanan endorfin hormonu saye-sinde stresten uzaklaşacağınız gibi, yaşadığınız tatsız olayların iyi yönlerini de görmeye başlayabilirsiniz.

Coming across wild animals such as rabbits, partridges and foxes is another joy and privilege. If you happen to join one of these walks, we advise you take a moment to stop and fill your lungs with the fresh mountain air; the endorphin hormone released by your body will take away your stress and make you focus on the positive sides of even bad moments, memories and incidents.

Dağ yürüyüşlerinde dikkat edilmesi gereken hususları şöylece özetleyebiliriz: • Yaz dönemlerinde yürüyüş yapılacaksa mutlaka güneş kremi kullanınız ve günün en sıcak saatleri olan öğle saatlerinde güneşte kalmamaya dikkat ediniz. • Kilo vermek veya yağ yakmak amacıyla vücuda sarılan naylon vb. ürünlerin sağlık açısından uygun olmadığının uzmanlar tarafından belirtildiğini göz ardı etmeyiniz. • Vücudun kesinlikle susuz kalmaması gerektiği için, yanınıza mutlaka su alınız. • Doğru ayakkabı seçimi, bu sporda son derece önemlidir. İnce tabanlı ayakkabılardan kaçınınız. • Bu spora başlamadan önce mutlaka bir doktor raporu alınız. Zaten Dağcılık Spor Derneği de üyelik için başvuranlardan doktor raporu istemektedir. Dağcılık Spor Derneği üyeleriyle çıktığımız dağ yürüyüşünün ardından; Görneç köyünde eski u-sül fırında pişen pilavuna, kabak böreği, zeytinli gibi lezzetleri keyifli sohbetlere katarak günümüzü noktaladık. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın güzelliklerini keşfetmek adına herkese Dağcılık Spor Derneği’yle dağ yürüyüşü yapmasını tavsiye ederiz.

The points that you should be careful about and pay attention to during these mountain walks can be summarised as follows: • If you are to walk during the summer season, you must most definitely use a sun block cream and avoid direct sunlight during noon, when the heat is at its peak. • Do not ignore the fact that experts say that wrapping nylon or similar materials around the body to help burning fat or losing weight during walks is not healthy. • You must never be dehydrated, so you must definitely have water with you. • The choice of correct shoes is of utmost importance. Avoid thin soled shoes. • You must get a doctor’s report before you take up this activity. The Mountaineering Sports Association requires a doctor’s report for membership applications anyways. At the end of the mountain hiking session we stopped at the village of Görneç for some traditional style oven baked cheese pastry, pumpkin pastry, scones and olive bread. We finished the day chatting with other hikers while we had our baked dolci. ayvanlar aleminin bu ayki konukları, insanlık için son derece faydalı olan ancak dikkatli yetiştirilmediği zaman Ada’daki doğal bitki örtüsüne ciddi zararlar verebilen bir küçükbaş hayvan türü olan keçi.

Keçi, Ada’nın güneşli kış günlerinde yeşilin olduğu hemen her yerde karşınıza çıkabilir. Ada’nın doğal bitki örtüsü de keçi yetiştirilmesine son derece uygundur. Keçinin sarp dağlara tırmanması ve yamaçlarda kolaylıkla yürümesi efsanelere dahi konu olmuştur, hatta daracık, uçurumla çevrili geçitlere halk arasında keçiyolu denilmiştir. Keçiler yaşlı bir erkeğin (teke) önderliğinde sürü halinde dolanmaktadırlar. Keçiler, sanıldığının aksine son derece zeki yaratıklardır. Zaten bir keçinin gözlerine baktığınız zaman zeka parıltısını hemen algılarsınız.

he guest of this month’s animal kingdom is a small cattle animal that can be extremely good for humanity, however when they are not bred properly an animal that can cause serious damage to the island’s natural vegetation; the goat.

On the sunny winter days in the island you may come across the goat just about anywhere where there is any type of greenery. The natural vegetation of the island is extremely convenient for goat rearing. The goat’s ability to climb steep mountains and hillsides has even become subjects of legends; in fact, narrow roads surrounded by the abyss have been named “the goat’s pathway”. Goats are led by the oldest male (Billy goat) and roam in herds. Contrary to what many think the goat is an extremely clever creature. In any case, if you look into a goat’s eye you will be able to see the glistening of intelligence.

Ada’da kapı kollarını açarak evlere giren, evleri tarumar eden keçilere dahi rastlanmıştır. Ortalama 15 yıl kadar yaşayan keçilerin sütü az yağlı olmasına karşın son derece besleyicidir. Eski çağlardan beri evcil hayvan olarak insanlığa hizmet veren, buna karşın özgürlüğünden de ödün vermeyen bu enteresan hayvan pek çok masala, efsaneye, hikayeye konu olmuş ve inatçılığı ile ün yapmıştır. Keçi derisi özellikle ayakkabı, çanta, eldiven yapımında kullanılır, kılları dokumacılıkta, sütü ise Ada’da özellikle hellim yapımında kullanılır. Günümüzde dünyada en pahalı peynir de keçi sütünden yapılan ve Fransa’da üretilen ‘Crottin de Chavignal’ adlı peynirdir. Son yıllarda keçi sütünün trend halini aldığını söyleyebiliriz. Hatta, Amerika ve bazı Avrupa ülkelerinde ‘Healthy Shop’ adı verilen yerlerde keçi sütünün diğer sütlere göre 3-4 kat daha pahalıya satıldığı bilinmektedir. Keçi türlerinden bazıları; Kıl keçisi, Ankara (tiftik) keçisi, Şam (Halep veya Damaskus) keçisi, Saanen Keçisi, Ak keçi ve Malta keçisidir. Bu keçi türleri arasında süt bakımından verimli olan Halep keçisi, susuzluğa en çok dayanabilen keçi türlerinden biri olduğundan Adamızda bolca mevcuttur. Saanen keçisi de Ada’da karşımıza yaygın olarak çıkmaktadır. Hatta geçtiğimiz yıl Doğancı’da bulunan, halk tarafından “Haydut” adı verilen ve kolayı çok seven Saanen tekesi, bölge halkının maskotu durumuna gelmişti. Keçilerden bahsedip de Kıbrıs meze kültürünün vazgeçilmezlerinden olan samarelladan bahsetmemek olmaz tabii ki. Samarella, tuzlanarak güneşte kurutulan, ince dilimler halinde kesilmiş keçi etidir. Çok tuzlu olmasına karşın son derece lezzetli olan Kıbrıs’a özgü bu mezeyi denemenizi tavsiye ederiz.

Goats that have entered houses by opening door handles, and left houses in disarray have been known to exist on the island. Goats who live up to a mean age of 15, give milk that is extremely nutrious due to its being naturally half fat. This interesting animal, which since the old ages has been a domestic animal yet has never given up on its freedom, has been the subject of many tales, legends and stories and is famous for its stubborn nature. Goat skin is specifically used in making shoes, bags and gloves, its hair for textiles and its milk is used, especially on the island, for making hellim. The most expensive cheese today which is made in France is “Crottin de Chavignal” and is also made from goat’s milk. We could say that goat’s milk has become somewhat of a trend in the last years. In fact, in stores named “Healthy Shop” in America and Europe it is well known that goat’s milk is sold for three to four times the amount of normal milk. Some of the goats species are; Hair Goats, Angora Goats, Damascus Goats (Aleppo or Damascus), Saanen Goats, White Goats and Malta Goats. Among these goat types the Damascus goat, which is most productive in giving out milk, is the type that is most resilient to droughts and therefore is plentiful on the island. The Saanen goat is also common on the island. In fact, the Saanen Billy goat found in Doganca last year, known for loving the easy life, and which was nicknamed “The Bandit” has now become this area’s mascot. Of course it would be a crime to talk about the goat and yet not to mention one of Cyprus’ irreplaceable mezes; samarella. Samarella is goat’s meat that is salted and dried in the sun and then sliced into thin strips. We recommend you try this, albeit salty, yet extremely tasty Cypriot meze.

If you are in nature for a walk or picnic, blossoming brooms, that look like bush but have splendid bright yellow flowers, will catch your eye and your soul and bring the sunlight into your heart filling it with hope.

Azgan (Katırtırnağı - Spartium junceum), Akdeniz Bölgesi’nde yetişen, baklagiller ailesinden, 100-200 cm boyunda, çalı gö-rünümlü, boylamasına büyüyen dikenli bir ağaççıkçır. Azgan, genellikle kuru ve kumlu topraklarla güneşli yerleri sever. Azganın oldukça yoğun ve hoş kokulu soluk sarı çiçeklerini doğaya bırakıvermesi Ada’da baharın müjdecisidir. Bu çiçekler, 2 cm çapındadır. Türkiye’de kullanılan katırtırnağı adı ile çiçeğin endamının taban tabana zıt olduğunu söylemek abartı olmaz kanaatindeyiz. Bu bitkinin çiçekleri o kadar güzeldir ki, Ada’da bu çiçeklerle evlerini süsleyenlerin sayısı oldukça fazladır.

Broom (Besom - Spartium junceum), is a thorny tree of the legume family, which grows in the Mediterranean region. It grows lengthwise, up to 100-200 cm tall and it looks quite bushy. The broom generally likes dry, sandy and sunny spots. When it spreads its heavily scented yellow flowers into the nature, it is a forerun that spring is around the corner on the Island. These flowers are 2 cm in diameter. We are in the opinion that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that its name used in Turkey, which literally means ‘the nail of a mule’, is just the opposite of the elegance of the flower because the flowers of this plant are so pretty that many people put the flowers in their homes as decoration.

The scent of these flowers doesn’t leave your house for days, so brooms bring spring itself into your home. This evergreen woody plant has more than one stem and plenty of leaves and it looks like an upward bush. Its young offshoots are, fragile and soft.

Azganın bezelyeyi andıran meyvelerinin tohumlarının zehirli olduğu bilinmektedir, buna karşın tarihte alterna-tif tıpta bu bitki kaynatılır ve balla tatlandırılarak içilir-di. Günümüzde halen belli bölgelerde alternatif tıpta kullanılan bu bitkinin faydaları şöylece belirtilmiştir:

imandan ayrılan feribottan Uruguay’ın yağmur altındaki hüzünlü görüntüsüne bakıyorum. Buenos Aires’e doğrudan uçakla gitmek yerine Uruguay’dan geçmek isterseniz, Montevideo’dan Colonia’ya sabah otobüsüyle, oradan da feribot yolculuğu ile gelebiliyorsunuz. İşte bu iki saatlik yolculuk sonrası Buenos Aires limanına yaklaşırken pustan ve yağmurdan kurtulmaya çalışan bir şehir beni bekliyordu. Buenos Aires. Bu ne büyüklük, nasıl bir genişlik. Bir şehir ancak bu kadar geniş, binaları bu kadar insana güven veren türden olabilir. Dünyanın en geniş caddelerinden biri olan on iki şeritlik 9 Temmuz Caddesi’nde karşıdan karşıya geçmek bile ciddi bir zaman alıyor. Caddenin büyüklüğünden dolayı, dört değişik trafik ışığında dura dura caddeyi izlemeye başlıyor insan.

am on the boat leaving the harbor, looking out over the melancholic view of Uruguay as rains drops fall upon it. If you would prefer to visit Buenos Aires via Uruguay, rather than by air, you can board the morning bus from Montevideo to Colonia, and from there pass through via ferry. It was after this two hour journey that I was greeted with a city that was fighting fog and rain as we neared the Buenos Aires harbor. Buenos Aires. What vastness, how big it is. A city can only be as big as this, its buildings the kind that instill such trust in people. It even takes a serious amount of time crossing from one side of the twelve lane, 9th of July Avenue, to the other. The avenue being so vast, one starts to watch the street as one stops at each of the four traffic lights.

İlk anda kendinizi büyük bir kaosun içinde savrulurken bulabiliyorsunuz, ama kısa sürede şehrin neresinde olduğunuzu, nasıl gitmeniz gerektigini keşfetmek mümkün. Büyük caddelerden birbirine bağlantılar yaparak, yürümemi sürdürüyorum. Kendimi rüzgara bırakarak dolaşmanın güzel bir tesadüfü olarak hiç ummadığım anda karşıma çıkan kocaman bir yapının önünde duruyorum. İçeri dalıyorum ve merdivenleri tırmanmaya başlıyorum, her katta ayrı bir mimari güzellik. Meğer Arjantin Adalet Sarayı’ndaymışım. Ne işim var burada? Herhangi bir güvenlik bile durdurmadan bir dünya vatandaşını kabul edebiliyorlar işte. Bu serin mekanda bir süre dolaşıp, fotoğraf çektikten sonra rahat bir şekilde çıkıyorum. Yollarda dolaşmanın en büyük keyiflerinden biri de her yerde karşınıza çıkabilecek, seyahatinize anlam katacak kafeler. Oralardaki minik molalarda, içeceğiniz bir kahve yanında sunulan küçük bir portakal suyu (böyle bir adet var) ve yorgunluğunuzu alan bir dilim pasta... Benzer durumları yaşadığım her kafede gelen hesap aynıydı; kuru çevirirsek 4$. İster istemez karşılaştırma yapıyorum birçok yerle ve daha çok kafeye girmekten kendimi alamıyorum. İşte bunlardan birinde, bana göre dünyadaki en güzel üç kafeden biri, diğer ikisini görmedim ama olabilir diye üç tane yazıyorum, Cafe Tortoni’deyim.

Geniş alanı, içindeki sohbet ortamıyla, arkadaki özel oturma odalarıyla bir kafeden çok otel görünümünde. Ne fiyatlarda ne de hizmette bir değişiklik var; harika bir kahve, normal bir fiyat, müthiş bir atmosfer ve havada uçuşan sohbetleriyle Buenos Aires’te kaçırılmayacak yerlerden biri. “Aman öğleden sonra geç saatlerde gitme” dedikleri yerdeyim şimdi de: San Telmo. Geçmişten bu yana şiddet mahallesi olarak adı çıkmış bir kere. Yürürken insanlar gayet sıcak. Açık bulduğum bir kapıdan giri-veriyorum ve fotoğraf çekerken bir konuk geliyor eve. Avluda önce ben hoşgeldiniz diyorum, gülüşüyoruz, sonra ev sahibi geliyor, ona da durumu anlatıyorum. Konuğuyla ayaküstü sohbet ettikten sonra konuk gidiyor, meğer kapıdan bir şey vermeye gelmiş, başbaşa kalıyoruz. Elli yıldır burada oturduğunu anlatıyor ev sahibesi, eskiden nasıl yaşandığını, sokağa bakan demir pencere parmaklığının açılarak kahvelerin nasıl içildiğini gösteriyor. İsteğimi kırmıyor, fotoğrafını çekiyorum. Ben teşekkür edecekken o önce davranıyor. İ

In the first instance you may find yourselves scattered amidst the chaotic surroundings, however, in a short amount of time you are able to figure out where you are in the city and how to get from one place to the next. I continue my stroll by crossing over to one of the wide streets. As a beautiful coincidence of letting myself get carried away by the winds direction, at a moment I least expect it I come across a huge structure. I enter and start to climb the stairs; each floor has its own architectural beauty. Apparently I am in the Argentinean Palace of Justice. What am I doing here? See, here they admit any old world citizen to the building without subjecting them to any kind of security. After roaming around a little while longer in this cool building, I contently make my way out. One of the most pleasurable things about strolling along the city streets are the cafes that you can come across at any moment and that will add meaning to your vacation.The tiny breaks that you take there, a small glass of orange juice that is complementary (this is a tradition) with the coffee that you order and a slice of cake… At all the cafes where my orders were similar to the above, the bill always came to the same price of $4. Inevitably I start comparing to all other places and cannot stop myself from entering other cafes. Here, according to me is one of the world’s three best cafes, I haven’t seen the other two but with the thought that there is, I am saying three. I am at CaféTortoni.

With its vast space, chatty environment and the special living rooms in the back it resembles a hotel more so than a café. There is no change in neither the prices nor the service; with its great coffee, normal prices, magnificent atmosphere and the light chatter zipping through air this is one of the places not to miss in Buenos Aires. I am now in the “Oh my! Don’t go there after hours” place: San Telmo. From days past, it has become notorious for its violence. As I walk along people are friendly. I slip inside an open door and as I am taking pictures a visitor enters the house. I am the first one to offer my greetings as we stand in the foyer, we giggle at each other, then the home owner comes along and I explain the situation to her. After speaking briefly with her visitor in the foyer, apparently she had stopped by to drop something off; we are left alone with each other. The home owner tells me that she has lived here for fifty years, how life used to be, and shows me how the iron window bars are opened and coffees are drank. She acquiesces; I take a picture of her. Just as I am about to thank her, she beats me to it.

İşte budur edasıyla çıkıyorum evden; iletişimin, orayı daha iyi tanımanın, keyifle sokaklarda yürümeyi sürdürmenin güzel yolu insandan geçiyor. Bu anlamda, Buenos Aires’te diğer yerlerden farklı ve sıcak yaklaşımı gördükçe buradaki insanlara karşı sevgim artıyor. San Telmo koloniyel evleriyle her sokağında mutlaka durulacak bir yer. Sokakta termoslarıyla kahve satan bir kişiden kahvemi alıp devam ediyorum yoluma. Mahallenin sonunda büyük bir park var. Bir tarafta günün sakin anlarını dinlenerek geçirenler, öte yanda geceki hayatlarına hazırlanan ve parkta uyuyan evsizler. Birbir-lerinin hayatlarına girmeden, karışmadan süren değişik bir yaşantı var burada. Parktan, şehrin eski mahallele-rinden La Boca’ya doğru giderken bir otobüse atlıyorum. Bozuk para olmadığından şoför bana “geç arkaya, sorun değil” bakışıyla gülümsüyor. Buenos Aires’te otobüsle bir yerden bir yere gitmek çok rahat ve ucuz. La Boca’nın ilk akla gelen yeri rengarenk ondulalı alüminyum kaplama evleriyle Caminito tabii ki... Adını ünlü bir tango parçasından alan Caminito, anlamına yakışır şekilde her kafenin önündeki tango danslarıyla, bir anda büyüleyici aurasının etkisi altına alıyor beni. Hatta oturduğum bir kafede dans eden çift, modelim haline geliyorlar. Fotoğraf çektikçe terslemeyen, hatta fotoğraflarını görüp de beğenenler oldukça, deklanşör hiç boş durmuyor. Bu şehre ait bir başka önemli nokta ise, çektiğim çoğu portre fotoğrafını hemen hemen aynı günlerde gönderdiklerimden aldığım teşekkür mesajları oldu.

Tango... Müzikle bedenin tılsımlı uyumu beni de yavaş yavaş ele geçirmek üzere. Bir hafta daha kalsam ders alır, bir süre sonra, ben de sokakta dans etmeye başlayabilirim. Bunları yapmaya sürem olmasa da, bir gece tango gösterisine gitmek bu şehrin olmazsa olmazlarından. Neredeyse yirmi sene önce seyrettiğim “Sur” filminin müziklerini Astor Piazzola yapmıştı. Herhalde bu nedenle Piazzola Tango Göste-risi daha yakın geldi bana. İki saat boyunca dansın ritmik hareketleriyle yaşantının birbirine girift yapısını gördüm sanki. Bir tango aşığı olmamama ve bu dansı yapmamama rağmen, Türkiye’de izlediğim tangolarla buradakiler arasındaki temel farkın, yaşantıdaki öğelerin dansa yansıdığını görmek olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Hareketler daha köşesiz, zaman zaman bedenler duygulardaki gibi daha yumuşak bir hal alabiliyor. Çevremde oturanların sürekli olarak tango şarkılarını mırıldanmaları, eşlik etmeleri tangonun hayatlarındaki önemini daha da çok vurguluyor.

I leave the house thinking, “this is it”, the way to get to know the place better, to enjoy walking the streets, is to get to know the people. In this sense, as I see a warmer and different approach in Buenos Aires in comparison to other places, my love for its people grows stronger. With its colonial houses San Telmo is a place where each street is worth a visit. I buy coffee from someone selling coffee out of a thermos on the street and continue on my way. There is a big park at the end of the neighborhood. On one hand there are people relaxing during the calm minutes of the day, and on the other the homeless are getting ready for their evening. There is a different lifestyle here, where no one interferes with the other. From the park I jump on a bus going to one of the city’s old neighborhoods, La Boca. I have no change, the driver gives me an “it’s ok, go on through” smile. Going from one place to the next in Buenos Aires is so comfortable and cheap. Of course, the first place that comes to mind in La Boca, with its colorful corrugated aluminum coated houses is Caminito... Caminito, whose name comes from a famous tango piece, true to its name, with tango dance displays outside each café and its magical aura suddenly, takes you under its spell. Actually, a couple in front of the cafe that I am sitting at become my picture models. In fact, my shutter doesn’t stop as there are people who are not averse to having their picture taken and who even like the ones that are taken. Another important point about this city are the thank you notes I got on the day from all those that I photographed that day. Tango... The magical union of the body and music is about to take me over too. If I could stay another week I would take lessons, and a while later I could also start dancing in the streets. Even if I don’t have the time to do this, I do have time to visit a tango show, a must when visiting this city. Astor Piazzola wrote the music for the film “Sur” which I watched nearly twenty years ago. It is probably for this reason that I leant more towards the Piazzola Tango Show. For two hours, it was as if I watched the dance’s rhythmic moves and life become intertwined. Even though I am not a person who is in love with tango or able to do this dance, I can say that the fundamental difference between the dances that I have seen here and in Turkey, is the reflection of life’s elements. The moves are more rounded, from time to time, just like emotions; the bodies take on softer forms. The people around me murmuring tango songs, or accompanying them just emphasizes the importance of this dance in their lives.

Gittiğim yerlerde mezarlıkları bulur gezerim mutlaka ama Buenos Aires’te zaten her yerde her kitapçıkta yazan, ziyaret edileceklerin başında yer alan bir mezarlık var: Recoleta Mezarlığı. Bir dönemin zenginlerinin yer aldığı ve halen belirli soyadlara sahip kişilerin gömülebildiği bu mezarlık; düzenli yolları, tertemiz hali ve anıt yapılarıyla insana “yer olsa da, buradan bir mezar yeri ayırtsam’’ dedirtiyor. Mezarlığın dar sokaklarında dolaşırken, gördüğüm kapıları kilitli küçük şapelleri andıran mezarların sakinlerinin gece çıkıp sohbet edebileceğini düşündürecek kadar güzel bir mahalle inşa etmişler. Kesinlikle görülmesi gereken bir yer, kaçırılmamalı. Buenos Aires’in bir de diğer yüzü var: Modern şehir. Puerto Madero boyunca şehrin modern binalarıyla eski doklardan kalan vinçler yan yana yer alarak, şehre eskiyle yeni arasında bir tat katmış. Onların arasında yükselen modern mimarinin ürünü bembeyaz köprü ise aslında eskiyle yeniyi birleştien önemli bir unsur oluyor. Burada yansımalı geceler eşliğinde yürünmeli. 19. yüzyılın liman bölgesinden bugüne uzanan geniş dönemine, Buenos Aires’in hem beğenilen hem de eleştirilen yüzüne tanık olunmalı.

Burada geçirdiğim sürenin unutulmayanları; yolların görkemi, binaların güven veren yapısı, kulağımdan eksilmeyen tango ezgisi, mezarlıktaki huzur, kafelerdeki ortam, yediğim harika etler ve yürümelerimin arasına sıkıştırılan özel Arjantin tatlısı “alfahores” oldu. Ama her şeyden öte Buenos Aires, insanlarıyla, portreleriyle hayatımdaki ve gönlümdeki yeri aldı.

I always visit graveyards of the places that I visit but in Buenos Aires there is a cemetery that takes first place among the top places of places to visit in every booklet. The Recoleta Cemetery. This cemetery, where the once rich now reside and where people whose surname’s still carry rank, with its tidy roads, clean voids and monuments makes one say “if only there were space, and I could be buried here”. Wondering around the narrow lanes of the cemetery, it has been structured so beautifully that it seems as if the owners of the chapel like graves with small locked doors, could come out at night and converse with one another. It is most definitely a place to visit, one you shouldn’t miss. Buenos Aires also has another side to it. It’s a modern city. Throughout the Puerto Madero city, the city’s modern buildings and the cranes left over from the old docks give the city a taste of the old and the new. An example of modern architecture, the brilliant white bridge that arises among them is actually an important factor between unifying the old and the new. One should take a walk here on a reflective night. Stretching as far back as the 19th century’s port area until today, Buenos Aires’ both liked and criticized side should be seen. These are the things that I will never forget from my time spent here: the magnificence of the roads, the trust the buildings instill, the sounds of tango music still ringing in my ears, the peace in the cemetery, the ambiance of the cafes, the wonderful meat I ate and the Argentinean desert that I squeezed in between my walks called “alfahores”.

Bu tür seyahatlerde tek başına olmak; benim için oradaki hayata bir uyum, oralı gibi olma, kendi par-çamı oralara uydurma, beni orasının bir parçası yap-ma gibi faktörleri düşününce çok önemli. Bazen “şurasını gördün mü; buraya gittin mi?” sorularıyla çok karşılaşıyorum. Döndükten sonra o yerlere gitmediğimi anlıyorum ama orada yaşadığımı hissetmemin önemi, yerini hiçbir zaman göremediklerime bırakmıyor. Bir tango ezgisinde kimi zaman saatlerce bir kafede oturup kitap okumak, aylaklık yapmak, çevremdeki sohbetlerin sözcükleri arasında kaybolmak, parkta diğerleri gibi gözlerimi kapatarak dinlenmek veya otobüste yanımdakiyle laflamak yaşadığım dünyada sadece dünyalı olmak gibi bir hayalimi gerçekleştirmeye yetiyor.

However, above all, Buenos Aires took a place in my heart with its people and its portraits. To be alone on these travels is very important when I think about blending in with the life there, to be like one of them, to accommodate a part of myself to that place and to become a part of that place. I am often asked questions of “did you see this place, did you go there?” Once I am home I realize that I haven’t seen those places but the feeling of not having seen those places is always outweighed by the feeling of having seemed like I lived there. My dream of living like a world citizen is fulfilled just by sitting and reading a book in cafe listening to the sounds of tango music, lazing around, getting lost among the words of the conversations around me, closing my eyes and resting just like those at the park around me or just by chatting with the person I am sitting next to on the bus.

ıbrıs’ta Lefkoşa Belediye Tiyatrosu’nun (LBT) oyunlarının oynandığı her dönemde çok rağbet gördüğü ve her sahnesinin tıka basa dolduğu tüm ülke çapında bilinmektedir. Bunun birçok nedeni var elbette; çoğu oyuncularının çocukluk çağından tiyatronun içinden gelmeleri, tiyatronun eğitimini almış olmaları, usta-çırak ilişkisi ile yetiştirilmeleri, inanılmaz bir ekip ruhlarının olması, iyi oyunlar yazılması ve bu oyunları büyük özverilerle çalışıp ortaya koymalarını başarılarının birkaç nedeni olarak sayabiliriz.

t is known in the whole country that whenever Nicosia Municipality Theatre puts a play on stage, it is always very popular, regardless of the season and the audience hall is always packed. There are various reasons for this of course; the fact that most of the performers have been in theatre since they were children, the fact that they have been raised within a mentor system, that they have an amazing team spirit, that the plays are well written and prepared with great efforts are some of the most important reasons of their success.

LBT oyuncuları son oyunları “Kabare Kıbrıs” ile de bunu kanıtlarcasına bir tiyatro şöleni sundular bizlere. Oyun haftalardır oynandığı halde Kıbrıs halkı hâlâ bilet bulmakta zorlanıyor. Oyunun özgün müzikleri, değerli müzisyen Ersen Sururi tarafından oyun boyunca canlı performansı ile oyuna renk katarken, oyuncuların dansları da görülmeye değerdi. “Kabare Kıbrıs”ı uyarlayan ve yöneten Yaşar Ersoy Kıbrıs’ta son dönemlerde yaşanan tüm olayların özetini yapmış gibiydi. Aynı zamanda oyuncu olarak da karşımıza çıkan Yaşar Ersoy’dan başka Özgür Oktay, Hatice Tezcan, Osman Alkaş, Erol Refikoğlu, Kıymet Karabiber, Asu Demircioğlu, Zeliş Şenol, Döndü Özata, Barış Refikoğlu, Cem Aykut, Umut Ersoy, Osman Ateş, Melek Gözükeleş ve Aytunç Şabanlı “Kabare Kıbrıs”ın oyuncuları arasında yer aldılar.

With their most recent play “Cabaret Cyprus”, the actors of Nicosia Municipality Theatre presented a theatrical feast, as a show of their already appreciated success. Even though the play has been on stage for weeks, Cypriots are having a hard time finding tickets. The theme music of the play are composed and played live by our own Ersen Sururi throughout the performance and the dance shows put on by the performers were worth seeing. Yaşar Ersoy, who adapted and directed the play “Cabaret Cyprus” in a way summarised all that has been going on recently. Besides Yaşar Ersoy, who also took part as a performer in the play, Özgür Oktay, Hatice Tezcan, Osman Alkaş, Erol Refikoğlu, Kıymet Karabiber, Asu Demircioğlu, Zeliş Şenol, Döndü Özata, Barış Refikoğlu, Cem Aykut, Umut Ersoy, Osman Ateş, Melek Gözükeleş and Aytunç Şabanlı are all on stage for this play.

We had an interview with our valuable stage actress Kıymet Kararbiber, who has been in theatre for years and talked about the play and theatre in general.

Kendinizi tanıtır mısınız? Hacettepe Üniversitesi Ankara Devler Konservatuarı Sahne Sanatları Bölümü Tiyatro mezunuyum. 1995 yılında mezun oldum. LBT Gençlik Ekibi çıkışlı olduğum için üniversiteyi bitirir bitirmez ülkeme ve tiyatroma ustalarımla birlikte sahne almak üzere geri döndüm. 17 yıldır LBT’de oyuncu olarak çalışıyorum. Will you please tell us a bit about yourself? I graduated from Hacettepe University, Ankara State Conservatory, Faculty of Stage Arts, Department of Theatre. I graduated in 1995. As I had been in the Juniors’ Team of Nicosia Municipality Theatre, as soon as I graduated I came back to my country and my theatre to perform with my mentors. I have been performing for seventeen years now. And for the last four years, I have been serving as the Art Director in Nicosia Municipality Theatre.

İlk profesyonel oyununuz hangisiydi? Oynarken neler hissettiniz? Aziz Nesin’in “Bir ŞeyYap Met” oyunuydu. Hayatımda bu kadar heyecanlandığımı hatırlamıyorum. O an anlıyorsunuz tiyatroda aldığınız eğitim size anahtar veriyor ancak oyunlarda ustalarınızla yoğrulmanız gerekiyor. Ben kendimi çok şanslı hissediyorum. Çünkü LBT’nin en önemli özelliği, oyunlarda ustaçırak ilişkisinin yürütülüyor olmasıdır. Bu benim için çok önemli bir deneyimdi.

What was your first professional performance? How did you feel? It was Aziz Nesin’s play called “Bir Şey Yap Met” (“Do Something Met”) I do not remember being so excited in my entire life. You understand at that moment that, school gives you the key but you have to develop yourself with your mentors. I feel very lucky in that sense because the most important feature of Nicosia Municipality Theatre is that there is a mentor – apprentice relation. It was a very important experience for me.

You mentioned mentors. Who were they? Yaşar Ersoy, Osman Alkaş, Erol Refikoğlu and Işın Cem, who is now retired but still one of the most important female performers of Nicosia MunicipalityTheatre.

Kabare Kıbrıs’ta ustalarınızla oynamak nasıl bir duyguydu? Bu oyunda 3 ustamla, Yaşar Ersoy, Osman Alkaş ve Erol Refikoğlu ile aynı sahneyi paylaşmak benim için büyük mutluluktur. Ayrıca yönetmenimiz de Yaşar Ersoy’du. Ustalarımız ayrıca LBT kurucularıdır. Bugün LBT varsa bu 4 önemli usta sayesindedir. Beni konservatuara hazırlayan Yaşar Ersoy ve Osman Alkaş’tı. 17 yıldır da onlarla aynı sahneyi paylaşmak benim için çok özel bir duygudur.

How does it feel to perform with your mentors in “Cabaret Cyprus”? It is a great pleasure for me to share the stage with three of my mentors, Yaşar Ersoy, Osman Alkaş and Erol Refikoğlu. Also, our director was Yaşar Ersoy. Our masters are all founders of our theatre. We owe the fact that this institution exists today, solely to these four important people. It was Yaşar Ersoy and Osman Alkaş who prepared me for the conservatory. It is very special for me to share the same stage with them for seventeen years.

Kabare Kıbrıs çok sevildi. İzlemek isteyenler bilet bulmakta zorlanıyorlar değil mi? Genellikle Yaşar Ersoy’un yönettiği oyunların hepsi çok seviliyor ve mutlaka ses getiriyor. Kabare Kıbrıs için şu anda 1200 biletli seyirci oyunu izlemek için bekliyor. Oyunumuz kapalı gişe oynuyor. Bu tiyatronun sanat yönetmeni olmama rağmen kardeşlerime dahi bilet bulamadım. Mart ayının ilk haftasına kadar biletler satılmış durumdadır.

Cabaret Cyprus is very popular now. People are having a hard time finding tickets, is that right? Generally, all plays directed by Yaşar Ersoy are very popular and they make a tremendous impression. At the moment 1200 people with tickets are waiting to watch the play Cabaret Cyprus. It is a house full. In spite of the fact that I am the art director of this institution I could even find tickets for my brother and sister. Tickets are sold out until the first week of March.

Kabare Kıbrıs’ta tüm oyuncular aktif ve dinamik rol sergilediler. Zor mudur kabare oynamak? Oyun 90 dakika sürüyor. Ve 90 dakika boyunca müthiş bir enerji ile hiç soluk almadan oynuyoruz. Oyunda eleştiriler var ve biz kendimizi, oyuncuları ve sanatçıları dahi eleştiriyoruz. Bu oyunun bu kadar ilgi göreceğini yönetmen de bizler de biliyorduk. Bunu bilerek çalıştık. Büyük fedakarlıklarla sürdürdük çalışmalarımızı. Çok güzel ve estetik danslar vardı oyunun içinde. Ders mi aldınız? Oyuncumuz ve koreografımız Osman Ateş, bildiğiniz gibi hem çok iyi bir oyuncu hem de çok iyi bir dans eğitmeni. Onun sayesinde oyuncular olarak dans etmeye çalıştık ve sanıyorum iyi de dans ettik. Osman Ateş de çok titiz biri olarak yaptığı işten memnun kaldı. Oyunda danslara eşlik eden müzik de arkadaşımız tiyatro müzisyeni Ersen Sururi’nin besteleriydi. Ersen, koreograf ve yönetmenle birlikte çalışarak tam da oyuna uygun müzikler besteledi. Bilindiği gibi Ersen Sururi Kıbrıs’ın en iyi müzisyenlerinden biri. Sonucun böyle olması beklenen bir şeydi. Everyone presented active and dynamic roles in Cabaret Cyprus. Is it difficult to play at a Cabaret? The play lasts 90 minutes. And for 90 minutes, we play non stop, with an outstanding energy. There are criticisms in the script; we criticize ourselves, performers and even artists. Both we and the director were aware how much of an impression this play would create. We worked with that in mind. We worked with compromises. There were beautiful and aesthetic dances within the play. Have you been taking classes? As you know, our actor and choreographer Osman Ateş, is both a great actor and a great dance instructor. Owing to his skills, we tried to stage the dances as performers, and I think we managed well. Osman Ateş, as a very meticulous person, was pleased by the end result. The music that accompanied the dances was composed and played by our friend, theatrical musician Ersen Sururi. Ersen worked with the choreographer and the director and composed music that fit the play perfectly. As known by all, Ersen Sururi is one of the best musicians of our country. So this result was of course expected.

Başka bir oyun için kollar sıvandı mı? Elbette. Oyunu açıklayamam fakat çalışmalara başladığımızı söylemek isterim. Ayrıca bir de çocuk oyunumuz var. Çocukların şubat tatili biter bitmez gösterime başlayacak. “İki Bavul Dolusu”. Dolu dolu bir sezon yine bizi bekliyor. Şu da bir gerçek ki “Kabare Kıbrıs” çok ilgi gördüğü için kolay kolay sahneden kalkmayacak.

Are you already preparing for another play? Of course. I cannot give details about the play but I can say that we started working on it. We also have a children’s play coming up. It will be on stage just after the semester break. “İki Bavul Dolusu” (“Two Full Suitcases”). A busy season is ahead. On the other hand, “Cabaret Cyprus” got a lot of attention, so it will be on stage for some more time.

Kıbrıs’ta tiyatro izleyicisi oranı nasıl? Bu sadece Kıbrıs için geçerli değil her yerde böyledir. İyi oyun ortaya konulursa izleyici bulur. LBT’nin tüm oyunları izleyici buluyor ve izleniyor. Her geçen gün de izleyicimiz artmaktadır. Hatta şu anki salonumuz bize yetmemeye başladı. LBT’nin önemli bir özelliği de; bir çocuk tiyatromuzla bir de gençlik tiyatromuzun bulunmasıdır. Sadece gençlik tiyatrosunda çalışmalara 75 kişi katılıyor. Biz sadece tiyatro oyuncusu değil iyi tiyatro izleyicisi de yetiştiriyoruz. Çocuk tiyatrosunda yetişen çocuklar gençlik tiyatrosuna oradan da yetenekli olanlar yetişkin tiyatrosuna geçme şansı buluyorlar.

What is the audience ratio for theatre? It is the same everywhere, not just Cyprus. If the play is good, the audience is there. All of the plays staged by Nicosia Municipality Theatre are favoured by people. We have a larger group of audience each day. Actually, our hall isn’t sufficient anymore. One of the important characteristics of Nicosia Municipality Theatre is that we have a children’s and youth theatre as well. There are seventy five people rehearsing exclusively in the youth theatre. We not only raise performers but watchers as well. Children raised in the children’s theatre are transferred to the youth team and those who are talented get the chance to come to the grown up team.

irne Boğazı’nın yaklaşık 3 mil güney batısında bulunan Kırnı, Beşparmak sıra dağlarının güney eteklerinde asırlar boyunca varlığını sürdüren bir dağ köyümüzdür. “Krini” sözcüğü eski Yunancada “pınar” anlamına geldiğinden, adını ünlü pınarından aldığı anlaşılmaktadır. Kıbrıslı Türkler tarafından “Kırnı” adıyla bilinirken, yakın geçmişimizde adı “Pınarbaşı” olarak değiştirilmiştir.

ırnı, which is located at around three miles to the south of Kyrenia Strait, is a mountain village that has existed for centuries on the skirts of Beşparmak (Five Finger) Mountain Range. The word “Krini” means fountain in ancient Greek language and thus we know that it has taken its name from its famous fountain. The village is known by the name “Kırnı” by Turkish Cypriots but its official name has been changed to “Pınarbaşı” recently.

Stanley Price tarafından gerçekleştirilen yüzey araştırma çalışmaları sırasında Prehistorik döneme ait çakmak taşı yonga aletler, taştan yapılmış bir keser ile iki el baltası, kırmızı cilalı çanak-çömlek parçaları ve daha bazı kalıntılar ele geçmiştir. Yine köyün üst başındaki bazı doğal mağaraların da M.Ö 3900 – 2500 yılları arasına tarihlenen Kalkolitik Çağ’da yerleşim amacıyla kullanılmış olabileceği öne sürülmüştür.

Sadece pınarın suyunu akıtan altı musluklu ve yalaklı çeşme yapısı günümüze gelmiştir. 1963 olaylarından hemen sonra “Kırnı Çınar Gazinosu” adıyla faaliyete geçen eğlence yeri ile piknik alanında, 1967-1994 yılları arasında küçük bir kulübe bulunmaktaydı. Hafta sonlarında piknik alanı bir sayfiye yeri olarak kullanırlarken, gençler ise piknik alanının güney bitişiğindeki büyük su havuzunu yıkanma yeri olarak kullanmışlardır. Buradaki yaklaşık 40 çınar ağacının bir kısmının 100 yaşın altında, bir kısmının ise 300 yaşın üstünde olduğu öne sürülmektedir. Kırnı pınarından söz eden köylüler, komşuları olan Bilelye/ Göçeri köyündeki Kulaklı Tepe’nin alt başında bulunan Bilese Pınarı’ndan da söz etmektedirler. Bilese su çevresinde eski bir zeytinyağı değirmen taşı, Venedik dönemine ait olduğu sanılan büyük bir havuz ve “Kral Kızının Mağarası” adıyla bilinen bir de doğal mağara bulunmaktadır. Kırnı Piknik alanı halen çevre köylerin ve Lefkoşalıların yaz gecelerinde ve bahar aylarında kullandıkları bir piknik alandır. Dağ yürüyüşü yapmak, pınardan gelen soğuk suyun verdiği serinlik altında yaz gecelerinde piknik yapmak, Kırnı köyüne has alışılagelmiş bir etkinliktir. Kırnı piknik alanı, 1994 yılından itibaren Mustafa Kemal Arif tarafından başarıyla işletilmektedir. Mustafa bey tarafından üretilen Kırnı çörekleri ve ekmekleri de Kıbrıslılar tarafından rağbet görmektedir.

Kırnı Fountain is on the northwest of a picnic area. The fountain would provide the whole village with water after, with an underground tunnel that connected them, it was nourished from seven different wells in the valley behind the fountain. The only remains of this structure are the six taps and the basin at the end. At the picnic and recreation area called “Kırnı Çınar Gazinosu” that started operating just after the war in 1963, there was a small hut between the years 1967 and 1994. On the weekends, the field was used as a picnic area and youngsters would use the large water pool to the south of the picnic area to swim. It is claimed that some of the forty plane trees here are below a hundred years, but that some of them are above 300 years. The villagers who talk about Kırnı fountain, also talk about the Bilese Fountain which is right below Kulakli Hill of Bilelye/Göçeri village, which neighbour Kırnı. Around Bilese, there is an ancient olive mill stone, a large pool, which is believed to belong to Venetian period and a natural cave known by the name “the cave of the daughter of the king”. Kırnı Picnic area is still used as a picnic area in summer by the inhabitants of neighbouring villages and also by people from Nicosia, the capital. A walk in the mountain followed by a picnic by the refreshing cool water of the fountain on a summer night is a tradition of Kırnı villagers. The Picnic area has successfully been managed by Mustafa Kemal Arif since 1994. Kırnı sesame pastries and bread are popular among Cypriots. Tarif: Fatma Sönmez Aydoğdu Uygulama: Reyhan Uluçhan

Derin bir kaba unu, yoğurdu, mayayı, şekeri ve suyu koyarak yumuşak fakat ele yapışmayan bir hamur yoğurun. Daha sonra mayalanması için hamuru 1-2 saat bekletin. Hamur beklerken, kabağı soyup küçük küpçükler halinde doğrayın, içerisine çok az sıvı yağ ve haşlanmış pirinci ilave ettikten sonra, kabaklar yumuşayıp suyunu çekene kadar pişirin. Pişen harcın içine kuru üzüm, ince kıyılmış badem ve tarçın ilave edip iyice karıştırın. Mayalanmış hamurdan 10 cm çapında yuvrlak şekilde bir beze açın. Açılan hamurun yarısına hazırlamış olduğunuz harçtan koyun ve üzerine damak tadınıza göre şeker serperek boş tarafını dolu tarafın üstüne doğru yarım ay şeklinde kapatın. Önceden ısıtılmış fırında 180 derecede, üstleri pembeleşene kadar pişirin. Afiyet olsun.

A Traditional Cypriot Cuisine

Pumpkin Pastry This month, we are going to share with you a very delicious, yet quite an onerous and laborious pastry dish, which used to be cooked in almost every household, and shared with others in the old times, but is nowadays not very often found due to our hectic everyday life. We are still filled with a childish joy when we find it prepared, and we strongly suggest that you try it.

For the stuffing: Half a kilo pumpkin Half a glass of sugar 1 glass of raisin 1 teacup of grinded almonds 1 teacup of rice or cracked wheat 2 spoonful of grinded cinnamon

Ingredients For the dough:

Preparation

1 kg flour 1 glass of yoghurt Half a pack of margarine 1 teaspoon of sugar Yeast Water

Put the flour, yoghurt, yeast, sugar and water in a deep bowl, mix and knead. Leave it to ferment for 1-2 hours. Meanwhile, peel the pumpkin and dice it. Add just a little bit of sunflower oil and boiled rice and cook until the pumpkin is soft and until it boils down. Add the raisins, almonds and cinnamon into the cooked mixture. Spread a 10 cm diameter, round dough, and put some of the mixture in half of the spread dough, then sparkle some sugar over the filling as you wish. Close the filled half with the empty half of the spread and close the open ends with the dough itself and make it into a crescent. Cook until brown in pre heated oven at 180 degrees. Bon appetite!

İlk defa böyle bir orkestra ile canlı konser veriyorum” dedi. Tek tek masaları gezip sevenleriyle kadeh tokuşturan ve sohbet eden Ortaç, Pasha International’da unutulmayacak bir akşam yaşattı.

amous pop singer Serdar Ortaç signed a magnificent night at Golden Tulip Nicosia Hotel & Pasha Casino, where he took stage.

Serdar Ortaç, continuously danced on stage with his dance group he calls ‘my angels’. Surprisingly, he proposed to his girlfriend, who came to watch his show with his mother. At one point, Serdar Ortaç danced with his mother Nesrin Ortaç and the audience applauded joyously. Ortaç, stated that this was the first time he gave a concert in Cyprus with a large orchestra and said “I used to playback here. This is the first time I am accompanied by a live orchestra”. Ortaç, walked around in the audience and clinked and chatted with his fans and made the night at pasha International an unforgettable one.

Farklı Bir Workshop’a İmza Attı An Unusual Workshop by Express Yourself

“Çocukluğumuzda hepimiz resim yaptık, bu bir gerekliliktir, eğitimimizin yapı taşlarından, gelişimimiz için olmazsa olmazlardandır. Bu gereklilik aslında sadece çocukluğumuzla sınırlı kalmamalı. Biz devamlı gelişen bir yapıysak eğer, ken-dimizi ifade etme biçimlerinden en güçlüsü olan resim dilinin de hayatımızın bir yerinde olması gerektiğine inanıyorum. Atölye çalışmasında, kişilere özgürce kendilerini ifade edebilecekleri bir ortam yaratmaya çalıştım, Teknik bilgiye ya da bir sanat geçmişinizin olmasına gerek yok. Bu atölye çalışmasında bir gurp içerisinde herkesin kendine ait bir çalışma yüzeyi ve boyaları oluyor, 3 saat boyunca orada boyalarla kendi iç dünayalarını ve kendi vücutlarını kulanarak tuvale yansıtma fırsatını buluyorlar. İnsanların içlerindeki çocuğu yüzeye yansıtığını gözlemle-

“We all painted when we were kids, this is a must; it is one of the building blocks of our education, it is indispensable for our development. This prerequisite should not be limited to childhood. Considering that we are ever-developing structures, I believe that art, which is one of the strongest means of self expression, should have a place in our lives. In this workshop, I tried to create a medium that people can express themselves freely; you do not need to have technical knowledge or a background in art. Here in this workshop, everyone has a surface of their own and paints; for three hours, they can reflect their inner worlds, with their own bodies onto the toile for three hours. You can actually observe people reflecting their inner child on the canvas.This way the participant is directly involved in

Batu Gündal’ın, happening art, ekspresif atölye çalışması, action painting ve soyut ekspresyonizm gibi kavramlardan yola çıkarak oluşturduğu bu deneysel atölye çalışmasıyla sanatçı, katılımcılara kendilerini ifade etmenin farklı bir yolunu sundu. Batu Gündal ‘PrintYourself’ adı verilen etkinlikle ilgili şunları söyledi:

With this experimental workshop artist Batu Gündal created from concepts such as happening art, expressive workshop, action painting and abstract expressionism, presented the opportunity for the participants to express themselves in an unusual way. About the event ‘Print Yourself’ Batu Gündal said:

Many participants actually express that they feel refreshed, so we can say that it is meditative. The inner journey develops tranquillity and awareness. Participants squeeze acrylic paint on their bodies and on the toile and they use their bodies as brushes. It is a very experimental workshop. At the end of the session, everyone has created an auto-portrait; an abstract piece of work of course; without any technical or stylistic concerns. Our only concern is to make an inner description.”

Bu enteresan etkinliğe ilgi oldukça büyüktü. Bu heycan verici ve renkli atmosfere, katılımcı olarak olmasanız da izleyici olarak katılmanızı ve bu dene-yimi tatmanızı kesinlikle tavsiye ederiz. Büyükkonuk’ta yaşayan ve Turizm Planlama Dairesi’nde çalışan Fatma Sönmez Aydoğdu, kitabında tatar böreğinden gullurugyaya, alıç macunundan kabak böreğine, Kıbrıs’a özgü en müstesna lezzetlere yer vermiş. Kitabın Türkçe ve İngilizce olarak okurlarla buluşması ise kültürümüzü tanıtmak açısından son derece isabetli bir seçim olmuş. Aydoğdu uzun yıllardır çıkarmayı düşündüğü bu kitabı, Büyükkonuk’ta yapılan Eko Turizm etkinlikleri çerçevesinde fiiliyata geçirmiş ve bizce çok da iyi yapmış. Büyükkonuğun Kıbrıs Türk kültürünü tanıtmaktaki önemine de değinen ve imece usulü ile geleneksel lezzetleri yaratmanın sahip çıkılası bir değer olduğunu söyleyen Fatma Hanım, söyleşimiz sırasında kitaptaki tüm yemeklerin tamamen Kıbrıs’a özgü olduğunu da vurguladı. Kitapta yer verdiği en zor tarifi sorduğumuzda, el makarnasının, hazırlanışının oldukça uzun zaman gerektirmesi nedeniyle en zor yemek olduğunu öğrendik. atma Sönmez Aydoğdu’s book called Traditional Cypriot Dishes is a significant, as well as beautiful book regarding the preservation of the traditional recipes and their promotion within our island and the rest of the world for them to receive the worth they deserve. Fatma Sönmez Aydoğdu, who lives in Büyükkonuk and works atTourism and Planning Department included many exceptional tastes, indigenous to Cyprus. Some of these exceptional dishes are Tatar pastry, gullurigya, white thorn paste, pumpkin pastry in her book. The fact that the book is published in both Turkish and English has been a to-the-point choice for the promotion of our culture. Aydoğdu had been planning to publish this book for many years and eventually managed to do so within the framework of Eco-Tourism activities in Buyukkonuk and we believe it has been a very incisive decision. Fatma Sönmez Aydoğdu also mentions the importance of the promotion of Turkish Cypriot culture at Büyükkonuk and states that traditional dishes are values that need to be preserved by everyone, emphasizing that all the recipes in the book are special to Cyprus. When we asked about the most difficult recipe in the book the author said it was handmade macaroni as it was very time consuming. In the months of May and October, for one whole day in each month, you can join the Eco days in Buyukkonuk, which is the elected pilot village of Eco Tourism, where you can taste the dishes included in the book. This book, Traditional Cypriot Dishes, is a must in every household in Cyprus and it can be found in bookstores. Kayahan sang his new hit ‘Mevsim Hala Sen’ (‘The Season is Still You’) for the first time in Cyprus and Galaxy Casino and received a loud applause from the crowd.

Kayahan’ın ilk kez Kıbrıs’ta ve Galaxy Casino’da seslendirdiği yeni şarkısı ‘Mevsim Hala Sen’ davetlilerden büyük alkış aldı ve oldukça beğenildi. Kayahan’ın eşi İpek Açar’ın da sahne aldığı konserde, çifte Galaxy Casino yetkilileri tarafından kalp biçiminde Sevgililer Günü pastası sunuldu. When Kayahan cut the cake he referred to his wife and said “I hope you always have your loved one right beside you, just like me”. Hindistan’da yemek yapmak bir sanata benzer; genellikle anneler, kızlarına aile yadigarı tarifleri çok genç yaşta öğretmeye ve anlatmaya başlarlar. Bu yüzdendir ki Hintliler için yemek ciddi bir meseledir ve yemek saatleri aile ve dostların bir araya gelebileceği çok önemli saatlerdir. Son derece lezzetli olmasına rağmen çoğu zaman fazlasıyla yağlı, fazlasıyla acı ve hazırlanması çok fazla zaman alan bir yemek türü olarak kabul edilebilir. Halbuki, öyle olmasını gerektiren bir durum yok. Hatta Hint yemeği pişirimine olan yaklaşım tarzı, orijinaline sadık kalmak, besin ve tat odaklı olmak ve bunu zekice ve yoğun bir şekilde yapmaktır. The large country, its population is second to China having numerous languages and every region is unique with its traditions, beliefs and very importantly with its food. Food may taste totally different from one region to another. In India, cooking is considered an art and mothers usually start to teach their daughters and pass down family recipes by telling and practicing in early ages. This is why Indians take their food very seriously and mealtimes are very important occasions for family and friends to get together. In a lot of Indian homes, foods are made from the scratch with fresh ingredients and various spices and probably there is certainly no other place on earth where so many fresh and wonderful ingredients combine to make such a variety of recipes. Today, most of the world is under the influence of this magical cuisine. India is perceived as largely vegetarian for many people all around the world and this definitely is not true. To a larger extent, religious beliefs dic-

tate what a person cannot eat. Islam forbids its followers from eating pork while a lot of Hindus do not eat beef and on the other hand the Jain Faith forbids its followers from all meats and even avoid onions and garlic. When we look at the past, India has been invaded and occupied by other cultures and each has left its own flavours, recipes and marks on Indian cuisine. Aryans focused on the mind and body enhancing properties of food while Persian and Arabs led to Mughal style of cooking with rich, thick gravies and the use of dry fruits like cashews and almonds in dishes. The British gave India its love of tea and some European twist into some of the dishes. There are so many different ways of looking at Indian food. Although it is delightfully delicious, it is often seem too greasy, too spicy and too time consuming to make. Well, it certainly need not need to be like that. In fact, the approach to Indian cooking is a way of respecting the authenticity, be committed to nutrition and taste and to be smart and stylish about it.

Orijinal Hint Yemekleri ve Tandoori Kebapları, Ada’da Hindistan’dan gelen tek şefe ev sahipliği yapıyor. Restoranı ziyaret etmek için Çarşamba gününü seçtim ve bunu yaptığıma çok memnun oldum çünkü restoran sahibi Cemal Bey, eşi Beril Hanım ve oğulları, beni ve misafirimi çok iyi ağırladılar. Cemal Bey, yemek hakkındaki konuşması ve genç yaşta yemekle iç içe olmasından belli olan, meraklı ve tutkulu bir gurme. Genç bir çocukken babasının İngiltere’de restoranları varmış ve bu sayede faklı yemekler hakkında bilgi edinebilmiş. Daha sonraları başka işlerle meşgul olan Cemal Bey, her zaman bir gün kendi restoranını açmakta azimli ve karalıydı ve hikaye böylece Kamares’te başlamış. Kamares, ismini Bizanslılar zamanında bulunan ilk antik anıttan alıyor ve aynı zamanda bu bölgenin de ismi olarak geçiyor. Hint şeflerin üçü de menüdeki her yemeği pişirebiliyorlar, ki bu çoğu restoranda mutfak personeli için son derece olağan dışı bir şeydir. Bir yemek eleştirmeni ve restoran danışmanı olarak ziyaret ettiğim her restoranda tüm menüleri ve şarap listelerini okumaya çok meraklıyımdır. Menüyü taradıktan sonra tabağıma konulacak olan mükemmel yemekleri beklemeye başladım ve dikkatlice düzenlenmiş şarap menüsünden de güzel bir sürprizin beni beklediğini anladım. Cemal Bey ve eşi tarafından çok hoş bir şekilde karşılandıktan sonra, şömine yanına oturtulduk, garson masamıza gelip mumumuzu yaktı, kadehlerimize su koydu ve birbirinden lezzetli popodom sosları olan Hint mango turşusu, nane sosu ve Hint soğan salatasını masamıza getirdi. Acı yemekler yiyeceğimizden, her zaman yarı tatlı bir beyaz şarap olan Muscadet’i tercih ederim. Soğan Bhaji’ye hiç bir şekilde hayır diyemedim, misafirim de Sebzeli Samoza’yı tercih etti. Başlangıçlar Hint yemeklerinin temelleri olan tüm unsurları taşıyordu; acı, kıtır kıtır ve tuzluydular. Tüm yemekler çok güzel bir sunumla hazırlandı ve tatlar da mükemmel bir şekilde birbirini tamamladı.

Kamares Restaurant & Bar, Authentic Indian Cuisine and Tandoori Kebabs in Edremit, Kyrenia, is one of the only restaurants whose chefs are originated from India. I choose a Wednesday to visit the restaurant and was glad I did, because owner Cemal, his wife Belin and his son looked after me and my dining companion. Mr Cemal is an enthusiastic and passionate foodie, which is obvious from the way he talks about food and his involvement in it at an early age. When he was a young boy, his father owned restaurants in the UK and learned about different dishes there. Later, he involved in other businesses however he always had a passion and ambition of running his own restaurant one day and the story starts here in Kamares. The name Kamares comes from the first ancient monument that was found in the Byzantines period which is so called this region. The three Indian Chefs can actually cook every single dish on the menu which is very unusual for kitchen personnel as in most restaurant kitchens, chefs have different roles and this is where I realized how ambitious Mr. Cemal is, and how important it is to him to achieve success by doing everything right. To him, success means doing it well and doing it right, and it is evident from the ambience, decor, menu, wine list and attention to detail and cleanliness in the restaurant. I am sure this principle will soon earn Mr Cemal and his family good business and much success in the long run. Being a food critic and a restaurant consultant, I am always very keen to read the entire menu and the wine list at any restaurant I visit. Once I read the menu, I began to anticipate great food on my plate, and from the carefully selected wine list, I knew I was in for a real treat!

After a very friendly welcome greeting by Cemal and his wife, we have been seated close to a fire place and the waiter approached to our table, lit our candle, poured water to our glasses and brought a small plate of poppadum dips, mango chutney, mint sauce and Indian onion salad which were all delicious. Hence we were going to have hot fiery dishes, I always prefer to have a semi sweet white moscado wine. I simply could not resist the onion bhaji and my companion had the vegetable samosa. Both starters had all the flavours which the very principle of Indian cooking dictates, hot, crispy and savoury. The entire dish was beautifully presented and the flavours were perfectly balanced. In between every course, I always look or walk in and out of the restaurant to look at the dĂŠcor, the music, event list, the general cleanliness, if activities involve such as play areas for children, the parking area, the smoking area ( if heated and seated in winter ) and the whole setting as such services are as important as having a great meal. In Kamares Indian Restaurant and Bar, you may find most of the above pretty in balance. I was quiet impressed especially with the outdoor and indoor play areas for children attracting families with children to spend long hours without getting bored. The indoor play area is attached to the restaurant in a closed section in such a way that the parents may see their children play and no one gets disturbed with any kind of a sound. In the Restaurant Industry, image is almost everything. The kitchen and waiting staff is the image of a restaurant and if an employee is wearing a dirty or not pressed uniform, it is not putting forth a good image of the restaurant. Safran pilav ve Naan ekmekleriyle servis edilen yumuşacık ve sulu kuzu köri ve otantik toprak fırında 400 derecede pişen karışık tandoori kebap, baharatlarla mükemmel uyum içindeydi. Bardakta şarap 7TL gibi uygun fiyatlara satılıyor. İthal içkiler 10 TL ile 15TL arasında değişiyor ki bu çoğu restoran, cafe ve bara göre çok uygun bir fiyat. Restoranın kapalı alan kapasitesi 100 kişi, teras 100 kişi ve yemeklerin mutfaktan direkt olarak asansörle gönderildiği çatı katı terası 100 kişilik kapasiteye sahip... Çok iyi düşünülmüş çünkü çatı katı terası, önü kesilmeyen deniz ve dağ manzarasına sahip.

The personnel looked very clean, presentable and friendly at Kamares and it proved me that there were customers in the restaurant whom are repeat comers either sitting at the bar enjoying their drinks or having a meal with their loved ones. One of the couples even brought a beautiful handmade material from Goa which is used as a wall dĂŠcor hanging on the wall. We all know that the most effective and the cheapest advertising policy is word of mouth. Stick to it and make more friends not customers. The main course comes along within the authentic silver dishes from India and looked very impressive and presentable. Tender and succulent lamb curry and mix tandoori kebab cooked in an original 400 degree hot clay oven were served with saffron rice and Naan Bread was in perfect harmony with the spicing. Perhaps this is where people should realize that every cuisine has its own way of preparing and cooking authentically which may be cold, hot, mild, medium or spicy without burning your mouth or ruins the sense of the taste. Here, there was an amicable balance of spices, chilies and temperature in anything we had. Chili lovers should definitely try the spicy lamb curry, where chili plays the central role, but interestingly, it touches your palate gradually after you have enjoyed all the other flavours. Chefs` ingenious skills and their knowledge in the use of spices definitely give a big credibility to this authentic Indian Restaurant. I admire his light handed approach to spicing which is an area where many chefs seem to go wrong. The Chefs also managed to give a clever twist to many traditional dishes and retained their totally traditional tastes and flavours. The menu in general is huge and there is lots to choose and these are; Starters and Indian Breads, Tandoori Kebabs, Curry, Tikka Masala, Jhalferezi, Korma, Rara, Tava, Saag, Madras, Bhuna, Vegetable, Seafood, Biryani ( Rice ) Specialties, Children`s Menu and Desserts. The wine and spirit list is impressive and affordable. They range from 25TL to 100TL, and the gorgeous DLC Moskado we had was reasonably priced at 50TL.

The capacity of this indoor restaurant is 100, terrace is 100 and roof top is 100 where food is transferred by a lift directly from the kitchen… very well thought as the roof terrace has unobstructed sea and mountain views. If you want the true taste of India without making a trip abroad, then Kamares is the place. The menu is full of regional dishes that are well explained and invite you on a food journey through India. All of this is cooked to perfection, more home style than your usual curry house so it is not greasy, salty or heavy. Nice style with a lot of substance.

The total bill was 119TL, for two people including all meals, a bottle of white wine, a bottle of water and coffees. It came up to almost 60TL per person and it worths every penny for such a dining experience.
