Türkiye birincisi ve KKTC rekortmeni milli atletimiz Suzan İçen olanaksızlıklarla mücadele etmekte sınır tanımıyor TRNC’s record breaker and Turkey champion, Suzan Içen shows no bounds in her fight to defeat the obstacles in her way.

adınlar 100 metre engellide 14.95’lik derecesi ile 2012 Türkiye ve KKTC birincisi olan Suzan İçen sadece koşarak hayatını kazanamıyor. Radyo programcılığından antrenörlüğe, haber spikerliğinden fitness eğitmenliğine dek birçok işte çalışarak spor hayatını sürdüren İçen, maddi imkansızlıkların birçok sporcunun sporu bırakmasına sebep olduğunu belirtiyor.

Azimli milli atletimiz, olanaksızlıklar karşısında gene de yılmıyor. Sporcumuz 100 metre engelli dışında, bu sene ilk kez uzun atlama, 5 branştan oluşan pentatlon ve 7 branştan oluşan heptatlon yarışmasına da katılacak. Suzan İçen uzun atlama, 60 metre engelli, 800 metre yüksek atlama ve gülle atmadan oluşan pentatlonu 2012 Türkiye Salon AtletizmYarışması’nda deneyecek. ith a 14:95 score in the Women’s 100 Meter Obstacle Race, Turkey and TRNC’s first place winner Suzan Içen’s has a number of jobs apart from racing. Içen, who earns a living through many different avenues, be it by hosting a radio show to coaching, acting as a television anchor to working as a fitness instructor, tells us that many sportsmen have to leave the profession due to financial difficulties. However, our perseverant national athlete continues to fight against these obstacles. Other than the 100 meter, this year for the first time Içen is preparing to participate in the long jump, the pentathlon; formed from 5 different events and the heptathlon; a contest featuring 7 different events. Suzan Içen will be trying her hand at the 60 meter obstacle race, the 800 meter high jump and the pentathlon which includes shot puts at this year’s Indoor Athletics Race. As Suzan Içen speaks to Passatempo, her eyes shine bright while she talks about the pride of being a national honor.

Türkiye birincisi olmanızı hırslı olmanıza mı yoksa azimli oluşunuza mı bağlıyorsunuz? Çok çalışmadan, hırslı olmadan başarılı olmak mümkün değil. Ama azimli olmazsanız kesinlikle başarısız olursunuz. Bizim atletler olarak son derece monoton bir hayatımız var. Sosyal yaşantımız yok denecek kadar az. Yememize, içmemize sürekli dikkat etmek zorundayız. Ergojenik destekten, kıyafetlerimize dek her ayrıntıya önem vermek durumundayız. Ancak tüm bunların yanında en önemlisi disiplinle ve azimle çalışmalıyız. Düzenli her gün antrenmanlarımız oluyor. Bir gün antrenman yapmadığımızda o gün 20 güne eş değer ve 20 gün antrenman yapmamış gibi oluyorsunuz ve bu büyük bir kayıptır. Pazar günü hariç her gün antrenmanlarımızı düzenli yapmamız çok önemli. Atletizmde neden engelli gibi zor bir alanı seçtiniz? Ben zoru başarmayı seven biriyim. Herkesin yapamadığını yapmayı tercih ediyorum. Bu sene uzun atlamaya da başlıyorum. İnşallah bu sene 6 metrenin üzerinde atlayarak, KKTC rekorunu kırmayı başaracağım. Antrenörüm Berk Tuna ile bunu başarabileceğime inanıyorum. Dünyadaki elit sporcular 7 metreye yakın atlıyor. Bizim amacımız şimdilik sadece 6 metrenin üzerine çıkabilmek. Engelli koşuda da kuma uzun atlamada da sıçrama teknikleri çok önemli. Engelli koşularda 100 metre mi 400 metre mi daha zordur? 400 metre engelli süratte devamlılık gerektirir. Benim 400 metrede de KKTC rekorlarım var. 400 metrenin antrenmanları çok zor ve çok sıkıntılıdır. 400 metre antrenmanlarından kaç kere ağlayarak çıktığımı bilirim. Laktik asitten dolayı 400 metre antrenmanları çok acı vericidir. Sonunda bırakmak zorunda kaldım. 100 metre koşuları sporseverler açısından çok daha ilgi çekicidir. Bunu nasıl açıklamak gerekir? Atletizm denilince nedense akla hep 100 metre geliyor. 7’den 70’e kime sorarsanız atletizm denilince hep 100 metreciler gündeme getirilir. 100 metrede takozdan ilk çıktığın an çok önemlidir. 400 metrede ise her şey 250 metreden sonrasına ve son 150 metreye bağlıdır. Bu nedenle 400 metre çok daha zordur.

Do you credit the fact that you are Turkey’s champion to you being perseverant or ambitious? It is impossible to be successful without working extremely hard and being ambitious. However if you are not perseverant you will surely fail. We athletes have an extremely monotonous life. Our social lives are nearly nonexistent. We constantly have to watch what we eat and drink. We must pay special attention to our clothes and our ergogenic support. However, above all we must be disciplined and perseverant in our work. We have regular training sessions every day. Missing just one day of training equals 20 days for us, where it seems like we haven’t trained for 20 days, which is a tremendous loss. Apart from Sundays it is important that we systematically train every day. Why did you choose obstacle races? I am a person who likes to achieve the difficult. I prefer to do what nobody else chooses to do. This year I am competing at the long jump too, in which, by hopefully jumping over 6 meters I aim to beat the TRNC record. With my coach Berk Tuna by my side, I believe I can achieve this goal. The world’s elite athletes jump to nearly 7 meters. Our aim for now is to jump over 6 meters. Both in obstacle races and the long jump the jump is of great importance. Of obstacle races, which is more difficult the 100 meter or the 400 meter? The 400 meter obstacle race brings continuity in your speed. I have broken records in TRNC for the 400 meter. Training for the 400 meter is extremely tiring and hard. I can’t count the number of times I left the training course crying. Due to the lactic acid secreted during the 400 meter training sessions it is extremely painful. In the end, I had to give up. Due to their conditions the 100 meters are preferred by sportsmen. How do you explain this? When we think of athletics, for some reason the first thing that comes to mind is the 100 meter. Ask anybody from the age of 7 to 70 about athletics, the 100 meter will come up. The moment you take off from the block is a crucial time. However in the 400 meter the important part comes after 250 meters and the last 150 meters.

Uzun atlama ve engelli koşunun antrenmanlarına nasıl vakit ayıracaksınız? Antrenörüm Berk Tuna ile şimdiden antrenman planlarını yapmaya başladık. Ama bu sene pentatlon ve heptatlona da hazırlanacağız. Pentatlon 5 yarıştan, heptatlon 7 yarıştan oluşan bir branş. Salon yarışları arasında yer alan pentatlon; uzun atlama, 60 metre engelli, 800 metre yüksek atlama ve gülle atmadan oluşuyor. Pentatlonu Türkiye Salon Atletizm Yarışması’nda denemek istiyorum. Hepsine ayrı ayrı günlerde tekniklerine çalışarak hazırlanacağız. Yıllardır antrenörlerim pentatlon ve heptatlona geçmemi istiyordu. Bunu başaracağıma inanıyorum. İnşallah bu yaz heptatlonu da deneyeceğim. Heptatlonda, pentatlon branşlarına ek olarak cirit atma, 200 metre koşu var ve heptatlonda 60 metre engelli değil, 100 metre engelli koşuyorsunuz. Heptatlon salonda değil; açık pistte, stadyumda yapılıyor. Öncellikle pentatlonda Türkiye şampiyonu olmak en büyük dileğim. 100 metre engellide 14 saniyenin altına inmek de en büyük hedefim.

How will you schedule your training time for both the long jump and the obstacle race? We have already started planning my training schedule with my coach Berk Tuna. However, this year we will also be training for the pentathlon and the heptathlon. The pentathlon consists of five events, while the heptathlon consists of seven. The pentathlon which takes place indoors is made up of the long jump, the 60 meter obstacle, the 800 meter high jump and the shot put. I want to try the pentathlon at the Turkey Indoor Athleticism Races. We will be preparing for each race via different techniques each day. For years my trainers have wanted me to move on to the pentathlon and heptathlon. I believe I will succeed.This summer I am also hoping to try the heptathlon. In the heptathlon, in addition to the 5 events of the pentathlon, the javelin throw, the 200 meter run and instead of the 60 meter obstacle the 100 meter obstacle course is included. The heptathlon is not an indoor activity; it takes place in an outside arena. My first greatest wish is to become the Turkey Pentathlon champion. My biggest aim however, is to go under 14 seconds at the 100 meter obstacle race.

Yarışlarda takozdan çıkış anında nasıl konsantre olursunuz? Çıkış, koşularda çok önemlidir. Takozdan çıkış anında sadece yarışa konsantre olmak zorundasınız. Seyircileri ya da rakiplerinizi unutmanız gerekiyor. Yarış öncesinde stresi iyi yönetmek de önemlidir. Yarış öncesi son akşam, yemek yemekte zorlanabilirsiniz ve yarış günü sabah stresten kahvaltı edemeyebilirsiniz.

During the races, how do you concentrate at the moment you leave the block? The conditions as you take off are very important. You have to concentrate as you leave the block. You have to forget about the spectators and your rivals. It’s important to manage your stress before the race. The last night before the race you might find it difficult to eat or to have breakfast on the day of the race due to stress.

Koşucuların ayakkabıları altında çiviler var. Bu çiviler size nasıl bir kolaylık sağlıyor? Sadece koşularda değil, disk atma, gülle atma, sırıkla atlama da dahil, bütün branşlarda spor ayakkabıları çivilidir. Kısa ya da uzun mesafe tüm koşucuların ayakkabı altlarında çivi vardır. Fakat bu çiviler farklı ebatta ve biçimdedir. Ayakkabı altındaki çiviler kısa mesafe koşularında parmak ucu koşulduğu için düz zemindedir. Uzun atlamada ise ayakkabılar biraz daha topuklu olduğu için çivileri daha farklıdır.

The racers have studs under their shoes. What kind of ease do these studs provide? Studs are used in all shoes not only for running but also in discus throwing, shot puts, pole jumping and nearly at all events. Whether it be short or long races the sole of the shoe is decorated with studs. However, these studs are of different shapes and sizes. For short races, as the racers run on the ends of their toes, the studs are level. The shoes for the long jump however are different as the heel is slightly higher.

Genel olarak çeşitliliği seviyorsunuz galiba. KKTC rekortmeni ve Türkiye birincisi bir milli atletsiniz. Öte yandan radyo programı yaptınız ve halihazırda fitness eğitmenisiz... Eklenecek başka şeyler de var mı? Antrenörlük de yaptım. Radyo ve televizyonlarda 10 sene çalıştım. Haber spikerliği yaparken atletizmde antrenmanlarıma düzenli olarak devam ettim. Hayatım hep çok yönlü oldu. Sadece şu an için radyo ve televizyona bir süreliğine ara verdim.

It seems that you generally like diversity.You’re a Turkey athlete champion and a TRNC record breaking athlete. On the other hand you hosted a radio show and at the moment also work as a fitness instructor. Is there anything else to add? I also used to be a trainer. I worked for radio and television for 10 years. When I was a news anchor I also regularly continued with my training sessions. My life has always been diversified. At the moment I have taken a break from radio and television.

Bu kadar işi nasıl bir arada yapıyordunuz? Hepsini planlı yapıyordum. Sporcuların akşamları erken ve hep aynı saatte yatması çok önemli. Akşam saat 11’de yatıp, sabah 8’de uyanırım. Kahvaltımı yapıp antrenmana gidiyordum. Antrenmandan çıkıp, radyo programıma gidiyordum. Çocukları çalıştırdığım dönemlerde radyo programımdan çıkıp antrenörlüğümü yapıyordum. Oradan çıktıktan sonra da fitness eğitmenliğine gidiyordum. Çok yoruluyordum. Kışları çok yorucu geçiyor. Yaz döneminde kendimize ayırdığımız zaman artıyor, bu da çok güzel elbette.

How do you manage so many vocations? I plan. It is important for sportsmen to get to bed early and at the same time every night. I go to bed at 11:00 o’clock and wake up at 08:00 am. I have my breakfast and then go on to my training session. After finishing up I go on to my radio show. When I was coaching children I would leave the radio and go on to my job as a trainer. Once I finished up there, I would go on to teaching at my fitness sessions. I used to be exhausted. The winters are extremely tiring. During the summer months, the time we put aside for ourselves increases, which is of course lovely.

Atletlerin sosyal hayatları yok gibi bir şey. Bu sizi zorlamıyor mu? Dışarından bakılınca son derece monoton bir hayatımız var. Biz bunu severek yapıyoruz, bunun böyle olmasını isteyen zaten bizleriz. Tam tersi çok daha güzel bir hayatımız olduğuna inanıyorum. Doğru, gece hayatımız yok; sosyal hayatlarımız sınırlı. Ama böylesi daha keyifli. Yeri gelince biz de eğleniyor ve geziyoruz zaten. Çoğu kişi bana “hiçbir yerden destek almıyorsun, bırak. Boş ver artık ve gez” demiştir. Gezmiyor değiliz ki! O madalyayı boynumuza taktığımızda ondan daha güzeli yok bizim için. Atl et olmaktan gurur duyuyorum.

It seems as if athletes have a nonexistent social life. Is this not trying? When observed as an outsider it seems like we have an extremely monotonous life. We don’t do this begrudgingly; we are the ones that want it to be this way. On the contrary I believe we have a wonderful life. True, we don’t really go out much in the night and our social life is limited. But it’s more fun this way. Of course, when the time is right we also have fun and travel. Most people have told me ‘you’re not getting any support from anywhere, just drop it and have fun’. It’s not like we don’t! Once we put that medal around our neck, it’s the just the best moment for us. I am proud to be an athlete.

Türkiye’de spor ve atletizm çok büyük aşamalar kaydetti. Türkiye’de artık milli atletler sizin gibi üç dört işi bir arada götürmek zorunda değil sanırım... Çok başarılı atletler maddi imkansızlıklar nedeniyle üniversiteden sonra spor hayatlarını sona erdirmek zorunda kalıyor. İkna edebildiklerimiz devam ediyor ancak sayı çok az. Türkiye’deki atletler kulüplerinden para alıyor. Dünya çapındaki Nevit Yanıt, Aslı Çakır Alptekin gibi atletler hem Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti’nden hem de koştukları özel kulüpten çok büyük destekler alıyorlar.

Sports and athletics in Turkey have made great progress. Is it fair to say that athletes in Turkey no longer have to manage three or four jobs at once like you do...? Extremely successful athletes are forced to end their sports careers after college due to economic difficulties. We continue to persuade them to keep at it however they are very few in number. The athletes in Turkey are supported by their clubs. World renowned names such as Nevit Yanıt and Aslı Çakır Alptekin are paid by both the Turkish government and the private clubs that support them. I think private companies in Cyprus would also show their support.

Bizde de özel şirketlerin spora destek olabileceğini düşünüyorum ama atletlerimizin tanınma oranı düşük. Şirketler sporcuları tanımayınca destek olmayı da doğal olarak düşünmüyorlar. Sporcularımızın kendilerini çekinmeden tanıtması gerekiyor bence.

However, athletes here are not hugely recognized. Understandably as the companies don’t know the athlete they don’t consider sponsoring either. I think our sportsmen should unashamedly make themselves known.

Köyün, mutlaka gidilmesi ve görülmesi gereken çok önemli bir kaç noktası olmakla birlikte; en önemli yapısı camisidir... Osmanlıların inşa ettiği caminin Girne bölgesinin birçok köşesinde “vakıf” malları olduğu söylenir ve bu caminin geçmişte çok zengin olduğundan söz edilir...

Ozanköy’ün efsaneleri, cinleri, cadı hikayeleri, müthiş gelenekleri, adak yerleri; çok az sayıda da olsa yazar ve araştırmacı tarafından ele alınmış, ancak bir çoğu tabii ki “hayal ürünü” olmanın ötesine geçmediği gibi; cümlenin başında da belirttiğimiz gibi, sadece “efsane” olarak kalmıştır. Harnup ve zeytin bu köyün en değerli ürünleridir... Ancak, 2000’li yıllarda özellikle Girne bölgesini kasıp savuran inşaat furyasından bu köy de nasibini fazlasıyla almıştır... Bugün harnup ve zeytin çok azalmıştır... Köyde her yıl harnup pekmezi adına festival düzenlense de; ne yazık ki bir kaç kişi dışında pekmez yapan da kalmamıştır... Köyde cami ve yanındaki tarihi çeşme yanında, mutlaka görülmesi gereken yerlerin başında Ali Paşa adak yeri vardır...

he elderly call it Kazafana..Some say that the name ‘Kazafana’ comes after the butcher who used tol ive there and the Inn that belonged to him… Kasap Hani, which means Butcher’s Inn in Turkish language, has undergone some phonetic changes, due to the influence of Greek and was pronounced as ‘Kazaphani’. Until the 1950s the village was known by the name ‘Kazafani’, ‘Kazafana’ or ‘Gazafana’… Within the project of giving all villages names in Turkish language, this village was named after the famous, local late poet Osman Turkay’s title ‘ozan’ and therefore became ‘Ozankoy’, which means ‘Poetville’ in Turkish. Although there are several places to be visited in the village, the most significant one is the mosque. The mosque built by the Ottomans, is said to own many “vaqf” properties around Kyrenia and it is said that this mosque was very wealthy once upon a time...

The myths, demons, witch stories, wonderful traditions, offering places in Ozankoy were written by a few authors and researchers, however, naturally, they could not go beyond being fictitious, and stayed as myths. Carob and olive are the most worthy products of the village. However, the constructional rush at the beginning of 2000 especially in Kyrenia dreadfully affected the village. Today, the number of carob and olive trees is much less. Even though there is a festival, organised in the name of carob syrup every year, there aren’t many people left who make carob syrup except for a few. Besides the mosque and the historical fountain nearby the mosque, Ali Paşa offering stand is another must-see place in the village. You can most definitely find someone at the coffee shop to show you this offering place.

Kıbrıs’ta Eşyalarla İlgili Batıl İnançlar: •

Cezveden su içildiği zaman zengin olunacağına inanılmaktadır.

• Dükkan veya evlerin giriş kapısının üzerine asılan at nalının nazarı önlediğine ve bereket getirdiğine dair inanış halen mevcuttur. • Evdeki terlik veya ayakkabının ters dönmesi uğursuzluk getirirmiş. Eskiler, ters dönen terliğin üzerinde şeytanların dans ettiğini söylerlerdi. • Evdeki makasın ağzının kesinlikle açık kalmaması gerekirmiş. Bir inanca göre ağzı açık kalan makas, düşmanların ağzının açık olduğuna ve dedikodu yaptıklarına delalet eder, başka bir inanca göre ise ağzı açık kalan makas, kefen kesmeye yararmış. • Güneş battıktan sonra bir evden başka bir eve tencere ve kazan gibi eşyaların verilmemesi gerektiğine, aksi takdirde bunun ölüme davetiye çıkarmak olduğuna inanılırmış. • Bıçak hiçbir zaman elden verilmez, aksi takdirde bıçak alışverişi yapan iki kişinin arası açılırmış. • Anahtarlarını gürültülü bir biçimde sallayan kişi, yakın zamanda sevdiği biri ile kavga edermiş. • Pek çok kültürde olan, merdiven altından geçmenin uğursuzluk getireceğine Kıbrıs’ta da inanılır. • Uğursuz bir madde olarak kabul edilen cıva, bir kimsenin cebine, çantasına veya kapısının girişine dökülürse o kişinin cıva gibi dağılacağına ve bir daha toparlanamayacağına inanılırdı. (Cıva, belli kültürlerde halen kara büyü objesi olarak da kullanılmaktadır). • Bir evdeki eşyalar kendi kendine düşüp kırılırsa bu, uğursuzluğa delalet eder. Evdeki bardak, tabak gibi cam eşyaların düşürülmesi ve kırılması evdeki nazarın çıktığı anlamına gelir. • Başka bir batıl inanışa göre ders çalıştıktan sonra öğrencilerin kitap ve defterlerini kapatması gerekir.

Superstitions in Cyprus about objects: • It is believed that if you drink water from the coffee pot, you become rich. • It is still believed that the horse shoe hung over the entrance door of shops and homes keep the evil eye away and brings plenteousness. • It is said to be bad luck if a slipper or a shoe turns upside down at home. The elderly would say that the devil danced on the sole of the upside down shoe. • Scissors’ legs should never be left open. It is believed that when the legs of the scissors are left open at home, enemies’ mouth are open and they are spreading rumours about the members of the household. Another belief suggests that scissors left open cut the winding sheet. • It was believed that if pots or fryers were carried from one house to another after the sun sets, this would invite death. • One should never give a knife to another’s hand; this would cause problems between the giver and the taker. •

If one jiggles keys loudly, he fights with a loved one soon.

• In Cyprus, like in many other cultures, walking under a ladder is believed to bring bad luck. • When mercury, which is believed to bring bad luck, is put in someone’s pocket, bag or doorstep, it is believed that that person will scatter like mercury and never be able to put himself back together. (Mercury is still used as a black magic object in some cultures) • If objects fall down and break by themselves at home, this calls for bad luck. If glass objects such as glasses or plates fall and break, this chases away evil eye. • Another superstition says that students should always close their books after they finish studying.

Bu kıza aşık olan iki delikanlı en sonunda kızla evlenmek için aralarında ölümcül bir kavgaya tutuşmuşlar. Kavga sonunda hayatta kalabilen, kızla evlenebilecekmiş. Delikanlılardan biri dürüst ve iyi kalpliymiş, ötekisiyse kalleş ve kötü kalpliymiş. Kavga için meydana çıktıklarında, dürüst delikanlı ötelerde duran güzel kıza bakmak için başını çevirmiş ve bunu fırsat bilen kötü kalpli delikanlı, arkadan saldırarak onu sırtından vurmuş. İyi kalpli delikanlı, ağır biçimde yaralanmasına karşın rakibini bir bataklığa kadar kovalamış. Kaçarken girdiği bataklık ise kötü genci yutmuş. Maalesef , iyi yürekli genç de ölümcül yarasından dolayı bataklıktan kurtulamamış. Bataklık tüm bedenini yutarken, sevdiği kıza uzanan eli, bilek hizasında havada kalmış. Taş kesilen bu el giderek büyümüş ve beş parmak görünümündeki bir dağa dönüşmüş. Gençlerin uğrunda ölümü göze aldığı güzeller güzeli kız da o dağın doruklarında yaşamının sonuna dek sevdiği delikanlıya ağıtlar yakarak dolaşmış.

The myth about Besparmak Mountains (Five Fingers Mountain)

s the myth goes, centuries ago, during the mythological era in Cyprus, there was a girl who lived in the rurals between Nicosia and Kyrenia. This girl was so beautiful that there wasn’t a soul around who wasn’t in love with her. Eventually, two young men engage in a deadly fight, victor of which would marry the girl. One of these young men was honest and good hearted where the other was a piker and evil. When they came out to the field to fight, the honest young man turned his head to have a look at the girl who was watching from a distance and the evil one used this opportunity to stab him from the back. Even though he was heavily injured, the good hearted young man managed to chase his competitor to a slough. The evil young man fell into a slough on his way back and died there. Unfortunately the good young man couldn’t get out of the slough either as was heavily injured. The young man’s whole body disappeared in the slough but his hand, reaching for the girl, stayed out, from the wrist above. This hand grew in time to form a mountain that looks like Five Fingers (Beşparmak). The beautiful girl, for whom young men risked their lives, lived on the summits of that mountain grieving for the man she loved, as long as she lived.

Bilindiği gibi, Kıbrıs’ta narenciye üretimi oldukça önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Buna paralel olarak da limon, turunç, portakal gibi narenciye ürünleri Ada’da pek çok atasözünde ve deyimde geniş bir kullanım alanı bulmuştur.

As known, citrus production holds a major place in Cyprus. Naturally, on the island, many sayings and idioms quite commonly include lemons, bitter oranges, oranges and other citrus products.

Kıbrıs toplumunda özellikle kadınların sabah kahveleri gelenek niteliğindedir ve bu kahve sohbetlerinin çoğunda da dostlar arasında sır olarak kalması istenen paylaşımlar yapılır. In the Cypriot community, women’s morning coffees are almost traditional and during these coffee gatherings, women share things that they do not wish to be heard or known by others. In the old times, when someone is about to give a secret, either about herself or regarding a third person, would say “orange on the tree, this word stays right here” to emphasize the the thing to be shared must be kept a secret.

It could be a matter of discussion as to how well this expression worked on keeping some things secret, but it is a fact that the saying belongs originally to the Island and that it is very cute indeed.

What is Kettlebell? Kettlebell is actually the name given to the shot puts used when doing this exercise. Kettlebell shots vary in size and weight just like dumbbells. The handle on the kettlebell, is what distinguishes it from regular dumbbells. Another distinguishing feature of the kettlebell is its centre of gravity. Dumbbells’ centre of gravity is in the palm. Because of that, it is sufficient to use only the main muscle groups to control the dumbbell. On the other hand, the kettlebell’s centre of gravity is outside the palm. The centre of gravity being outside the palm changes at every exercise move, so you have to use different muscles trying to maintain the control. The fact that the centre of gravity is outside the palm and that it changes constantly result in using various muscles.

Girya’nın ilk ortaya çıktığı yerin Mezopotamya olduğu söylenmektedir. Ancak, girya, Osmanlılar tarafından geliştirilmiştir.Yüzyıllar öncesinde, Osmanlı İmparatorlarının kulplu gülleyi savaş hazırlıklarında ve form tutmak için kullandıkları bilinmektedir. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda şenliklerde de girya kullanımı oldukça yaygındı. Kettlebell’in de atası işte bu Osmanlı padişahlarının kullandıkları kulplu gülledir. Kettlebell kullanımı günümüzde özellikle Doğu Avrupa’da oldukça yaygın. Bu spor 2010 yılından itibaren batıda da birçok fitness programına dahil edildi. Adamızda da bu spor, eğitmen Enver Davulcu tarafından açılan özel kurslarda uygulanmaktadır.

Hatta Osmanlılar döneminde çekirge felaketinden kurtulmak için yasalar çıkartılmıştır. Günümüzde de her iki- üç yılda bir Ada, çekirge sürülerinin istilalarına uğramakta ve bu durum tarımla bağlantılı olarak ekonomiye ciddi zararlar vermektedir.

When one studies the Island of Cyprus’ history, one can see that throughout the ages, be it for the Venetians, Lusignans, Ottomans or the English, grasshoppers have been a constant problem. In fact, during the Ottoman reign laws were introduced to help get rid of the affliction of the grasshoppers. Even today, two to three times a year, the island is besieged by grasshoppers; seriously affecting the agricultural economy.

Bilimsel olarak bakıldığında çekirge, düz kanatlılar (Orthoptera) takımından Caelifera alt takımının sıçrayıcı üyelerine verilen genel addır. Bir çekirgenin boyu, cinsine göre 2 cm. ile 20 cm. arasında değişebilmektedir. Ağız parçaları kesici ve çiğneyici olup, çoğunlukla bitkisel, bazen de hayvani maddelerle beslenirler. Uzun yapılı başlarının yanlarında bir çift iri petek göz ve alınlarında üç adet basit (osel) göz vardır. Bir çift olan antenleri, bazılarında kısa, bazılarında uzun olup, dokunma ve kokuya duyarlı kıllarla bezenmiştir. Çok uzak mesafelerden rüzgarın getirdiği besin kokularını alırlar. Üç parçalı göğüs kısımlarının her bölümünden bir çift bacak çıkar. Kanatlar da göğsün son iki halkasında yer alır. Üç çift bacağın ilk iki çifti yürümede, iri ve daha güçlü olan son çifti sıçramada kullanılır. Çekirgelerin en yaygın çeşitleri; tarla çekirgeleri, yeşil çekirgeler ve kara çekirgelerdir. Genellikle bitkiden bitkiye sıçrayarak beslenirler. Fakat yiyecek azalırsa, sürüler halinde uzun mesafelere uçarak göç ederler. Bir çekirge sürüsü, 2.0002.500 km. mesafe yol katedebilir. Kondukları alanlardaki ekinleri birkaç dakika içinde tahrip ederler. Saatte 16 km. hızla uçarak, bir uçuşta, 12 saat havada kalabilirler.

Scientifically speaking, a grasshopper, is of the suborder Caelifera, the common name given to straight winged grasshoppers (Orthopera). A grasshopper’s height, according to its sex, can range from 2cm to 20cm. Their mouth parts serve to cut and crush their food; generally feeding on plants and occasionally on animal materials. The elongated grasshoppers head has two compound eyes on each side, and three simple eyes (Ocelli) on their foreheads. Pair of jointed antennas are short on some, long on others and are covered in tiny hairs (sensillas) sensitive to touch and smells. They are able to smell food from afar carried to them by the wind. A grasshopper has a pair of legs on each of the three parts that form the thorax. The wings are attached to the last two rings on the thorax. Of the three pairs of legs that a grasshopper has, two are used for walking, while the last larger and sturdier pair is used for jumping. The most common grasshoppers are: field grasshoppers, green grasshoppers and black grasshoppers. They generally feed by jumping from one plant to the next. However if food levels deplete they are able to fly long distances and migrate as a herd. A grasshopper herd can cover a distance of 2000 to 2500 km. Grasshoppers destroy the crops in the area they have landed in within a couple of minutes. Flying at 16km per hour, in one flight alone, grasshoppers can stay in the air for 12 hours.

The desert grasshopper is especially of international importance. This breed of grasshopper multiplies on its migration through West Africa and the border between India and Pakistan. In 2004 the island of Cyprus was invaded by grasshoppers, potato crops were seriously affected by this invasion. Today, in many countries, invasions are prevented by radars alerting against clouds of grasshoppers and spraying these clouds with pesticides. On the other hand, birds that feed on grasshoppers are also powerful weapons.

he Bella Solarius is a tree, which many meanings have been attributed to… Embracing each other, so tightly as if they never want to fall apart; reminding viewers of love, commitment, compassion... Such a noble, statuesque tree... When you take this tree as your shelter from the heat of Kyrenia, when you seek the chill of its shadow, you hear the branches and the leaves that move with the breeze and if you listen to the murmur, you can’t help but think ‘it sounds as if they are making love’. The branches of the female tree, elegant as a woman’s body, are clung on the thicker branches of the male tree. The two passionate lovers, ancestors of whom are known to live in Africa, have been holding on to their love and peaceful atmosphere for 175-200 years at the Kyrenia Harbour, across the Tourism Office, with the freshness of the very first day. Throughout these years, Bella Solarius’ family has grown and rooted at the Harbour. They, as a family, excitedly greet each day waving their graceful, dark green leaves, offering their shade generously to their guests.

ao Paulo’da sisli puslu bir hava karşıladı beni. Brezilya’nın endüstrileşmesiyle dikkat çeken, müzeleriyle ünlü, kaliteli kahvesiyle anılan şehri Sao Paulo. Birçok yere ilk kez gittiğimde yaşadığım hem nerede olduğumu bilmez hem de daha önce buralardan geçmiş miydim duyguları arasında yürümeye başladım

ve karıştım on bir milyonun arasına; üstelik öyle düzayak, uzun yürümelere elverişli bir şehir olmadığı halde. Daha ilk adımdan başlayarak kendimi, seyrettiğim festival filmlerinin içinde bulmuştum bile, nedense ülkemize gelen Brezilya filmlerinin festival dışı olması söz konusu değildir.

he air in Sao Paulo that greeted me was foggy and misty. Sao Paulo, the city that draws attention to itself with itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s industrialization, famous for its museums and known for its quality breakfasts. Even though the roads were uneven and the city was not built for long walks, I merged with the millions of people around me and started to walk with the familiar feeling I get whenever I visit somewhere new; not really knowing where I am yet wondering if I had previously passed through these places. From the first step that I took I found myself embedded in the films that I had watched at the film festivals, for some reason it is unheard of that the Brazilian films that come to our country are not included in the film festival.

Ancak beni asıl büyüleyen ise, gelmeden önce okuduğum Sao Paulo kitaplarında rastlamadığım ya da gözümden kaçan bir şeydi. Günlerce yollarda gece gündüz yürüyüp hiç duvar resmi yapan görmememe rağmen; her yer rengarenk, çizgi roman tadında graffitilerle doluydu. Dünyanın hiçbir kentinde bu kadar duvar resmi yoktur. Böylesine yapanı da izleyeni de mutlu eden, bir sonrakinde acaba ne var dedirten türden üstelik. Dünyanın en tanınmış graffiti sanatçılarının yıllarca bu şehri bir graffiti merkezi ve graffiti eseri haline getirdiğini öğrenmek biraz daha anlaşılır kılıyor bu rengarenkliliği.

Çelişkilerin özenle yan yana yerleştirildiği, zıtlıkların uyumlu birlikteliği içinde yaşayan bir şehirdeydim. Eski bina yeni gökdelenle yan yana, lüks yerler varoş kafelerle birlikte, sokakta yatanla sokaktan geçen işadamı beraber, kiliseyle önünde bekleyen fahişe aynı karede. (Bu benim için çok gerekli ve önemli bir parantez. Öncelikle gezdiğim kırkı aşkın ülkede görmediğim bir görüntü karşımdaydı. Gerçekten de kilise ve önünde bekleyen kadınlar vardı. Bu ıskalanmayacak bir detay benim için. Ama nasıl ifade edebilirdim?

Üç tanım vardı karşımda; “hayat kadını” anlam olarak garip geliyor; “fahişe” dışındakini kullanırsam da çok argo oluyor. Özünde hassasiyetle durduğum nokta ne bir ülkeyi ne de bu işi yapanı yargılamak. Burada bir fotoğrafçı olarak beni heyecanlandıran kadraj bu zıtlığın böylesine çarpıcı biçimde karşımda durmasıydı ama fotoğrafta bile olsun kimseyi incitmemek adına bu fotoğraf bu yazıda yer almadı ama anlatmadan da geçemezdim. Açıkçası anlatmadan edemiyorum ama anlatırken bile sürçülisandan uzak durmaya çalışıyorum)

Graffitiyle başlayan şehir sanatı, henüz müzelere girmeden yollardaki heykel sergileriyle devam ediyor. Yüksek binalardan oluşan şehir görüntüsünün önünde uzanmış çıplak kadın heykelleri, çevresindeki binalar ve oturan insanlarla bütünleşmiş. Sao Paulo’da kaldığınız süre uzadıkça, her boş zamanınızda ayaklarınızın sizi götürdüğü bir yer vardır: İbirapuera Parkı. Burası bir doğa, kültür ve spor merkezi. Şehrin ortasında bir oksijen kaynağı. Bana göre büyük şehir olmanın olmazsa olmaz bir özelliği, ne kadar modern ve büyük binalarla kaplı olsa da, merkezinde geniş bir ağaçlık alana, bir koruya yer verebilmektir. Bunu hep bir direniş, sistemin her yeri kaplayan beton ve çeliklerine karşı bir başkaldırı olarak algılarım. Yerli dilin-

I am in a city where opposites follow one another and where contradictions are in perfect harmony. An old building next to a skyscraper, luxury restaurants besides local cafes, a businessman passing on his way in step with the homeless and a prostitute waiting in front of a church all in the same picture. (This is an important and necessary bracket for me. Firstly, I was face to face with a scene I had not seen in any of the forty something countries I had visited before. There really was a church and women waiting in front of it. This is not a detail I can skirt over. Yet, how was I to explain this? There were three definitions available to me; ‘street walker’ is a term I find odd; if I use any other term than ‘prostitute’ it seems too vulgar. In essence I make a point not to judge either the country or the person of this profession. As a photographer the frame that excited me the

most was the striking opposites of such a scene unfolding in front of me, in order not to cause anyone offence the said picture does not take place in this article yet I could not go without mentioning it. To be honest, I cannot not tell the story yet even as I do I’m cautious that a slip of the tongue might occur.) However the thing that genuinely bewitched me was something that I had not come across or had maybe overlooked in any of the books about Sao Paulo that I had read before I came here. Even though I spent days roaming the streets and not having seen one graffiti artist, the walls were a mesh of colors; full of graffiti work resembling comic books. Nowhere in the world has this many works of graffiti on their walls. Especially the kind which makes both the artist and passerby happy and wonder

what the next wall will bring. The vibrant colors of the city are more understandable when I learn that the worlds most famous graffiti artists spent years making this city a graffiti center and the city itself, a piece of art. Before I even had a chance to enter any of the museums, the artistic side of the city that began with graffiti works continued with the exhibition of the statues on the street. Across the backdrop of the city composed of tall buildings, sprawled statues of naked women become one with the surrounding structures and the people sitting around. The longer you stay in Sao Paulo, with every spare minute that you have your feet propel you towards one place: Ibirapuera Park. This place is a center for nature, culture and sports. A source of oxygen in the middle of the city. For me a prerequisite of a big city, no matter how modern or full of tall buildings, is that space should be allocated for woodlands or a grove in the center of the city. I always take this as a rebellion against the cement and irons that take over the system of the city. When you enter this hard to pronounce and in its native tongue meaning ‘rotting tree’ park, silence, peace and nature awaits. Spending a whole day in this place just goes to show how time can fly by. Mezarlıklar şehirlerin yürüyen, koşuşturan, dinamik yapısı içindekilerine nispet edercesine; bu sistem içindeki görevini bitirip emekli olan kişilerin huzurla yaşadığı yerlerin simgesidir benim için. Ölülerin yaşadığı tek yerdir. Bir şehre gittiğimde kendimi herhangi bir dini yaklaşım ve etkileşimin dışında tutarak, mutlaka geçerim mezarlık içinden. Yaşam döngüsünde yine insanlar tarafından yaratılan o keşmekeşin aksine; düzen, estetik yaklaşım, farklı kültürlerin anılarını yaşatma isteği ve çabasının yer aldığı mekanlardır. Consolaçao’da birbirinden estetik heykeller, zamanında şehrin tanınmış zaanatkarı iken öldükten sonra da mezarlarında yapılan heykellerle o ustalığını sürdürmeye çalışanlar farklı bir zaman dilimi içindeler. Günün yorgunluğunu sokak arasındaki bir büfenin önünde kurulmuş mangalda yapılan et, sosis ve peynir eşliğinde içilen soğuk bira ve tatlı bir Portekizce sohbet eşliğinde gidermek mümkün. Bunun için yapılması gereken tek şey mangaldaki etlere önyargısız yaklaşarak insanın kendini bu güzel tattan mahrum etmemesidir.

Luz takes its name from the first station that the immigrants arrive at when they reach Sao Paulo and is accepted as the place where Brazilian music was born. So it was as I was walking from from these two contrasting places, Avenida Paulista to Luz, where I came upon a place that had an effect on me; the Consolaçao Cemetery. Each as lovely as each other, the emotion etched and magnificent statues that decorate the cemetery in contrast to the tall buildings behind it emphasize the union of contrasts that one grows accustomed to in this city. To me it seems that cemeteries are symbols of people who have retired their duties in this system and live peacefully; almost as if they are mocking the ones walking and rushing about in the city’s dynamic structure. It is the only place where the dead live. When I visit a city I always pass through a cemetery, putting aside any religious beliefs and affects. In comparison to the chaos - once again caused by people that takes place in the circle of life, they are places in which order, aesthetic approaches and the need and effort to keep memories alive of different cultures reign. The statues of Consolaçao, each as aesthetic as one another, seem to be in a different time zone, where once, the city’s well known artisans even after death wish to continue to show their craftsmanship. Within the side streets of the city you can shed the day’s fatigue away in front of a snack bar, serving meat, sausage and cheese made on the grill, a beer and listening to the sweet Portuguese conversation floating around you. The only thing one needs to do is to approach the meat on the grill without any prejudice and not deprive oneself of this succulent taste.

Sao Paulo’daki bir görüntü beni binlerce kilometre ötedeki ülkeme, okuduğum bir kitaba götürüyor. Tahsin Yücel’in “Gökdelen” isimli kitabında anlattığı o küçücük bahçeli şirin evle karşılaşıyorum, gökdelenlerin arasında. Okurken beni etkilemiş olan o evin burada karşıma çıkması bu şehirle aramda kurulmuş önemli bağlardan biri artık. Umarım bir dahaki gelişimde de o evin bana tatlı bir gülüş gibi gelen duruşuyla karşılaşırım. Sao Paulo insandan mimariye, sanattan doğaya kadar farklılıkların büyük bir harmoni içinde yaşadığı bir şehir olarak gönlümü çoktan fethetti. An image in Sao Paulo takes me back to my country thousands of miles away, to a book I had read. Among the skyscrapers I come across that cute house with its tiny garden that I had read about in Tahsin Yücel’s book “Skyscraper”. Here, in this city, to come across that house that had so affected me when I read about it, is now one of the important ties that bounds me to this city. I hope the next time I visit I’ll come upon that house and be greeted with its gentle smile. Sao Paulo, where the harmony of differences lives, be it from its people to its architecture, from its art to its nature, is a city that has conquered my heart. 68

anat sayfamızda bu ay çok değerli bir sanatçıyı konuk ediyoruz. Özden Selenge, 9 Temmuz 1946 tarihinde babasının o zamanlar öğretmenlik yaptığı Mağusa’ya bağlı Altınova Köyü’nde doğmuş. Gazi Üniversitesi’nde ResimSanat Tarihi eğitimi almış. İlk kişisel sergisini 1968 yılında İzmir’de açmış. Selenge, sanat yaşantısına 5 tane roman, 4 tane öykü kitabı ve 21 tane kişisel sergi sığdırmış son derece üretken bir sanatçı. Kendisinin şu ana kadar 20’ye yakın ödülü var. 21 yıl boyunca baba mesleği olan öğretmenliği gururla yapmış. Özden Selenge, Ada’da minyatürü ilk yapan sanatçı ve halen minyatürde tek isim olma özelliğini de koruyor. Öyle ki minyatürleri Unicef Alt Kurulu tarafından kartpostal yapılmak üzere seçilmiş, siyasi nedenlerle üst kuruldan geçememiş.

e are honoring an extremely noted artist in this month’s Art pages. Özden Selenge, born on the 9th of July 1946, in the Altınova Village of Famagusta, where her father at the time was a teacher in the village. She was educated at the Gazi University, majoring in Painting and Art History. She showcased her first personal exhibition in Izmir in 1968. In her lifetime as a fervently procreative artist Selenge has written five novels, four storybooks and put up twenty one personal exhibitions. Up until now she has received nearly twenty awards. Following in her father’s footsteps, she proudly spent 21 years as a teacher. Özden Selenge is the first artist on the island to create miniatures and still holds that title today. So much so that her miniatures were chosen by the UNICEF sub-committee to be made into postcards yet were refused by the Supreme Board due to political reasons.

Beş yaşıma girdiğimde ilkokula başladım ve edip eylediklerimin babam hemen farkında oldu ve bana ‘Benim kızım sanatçı olacak’ dediğinde, dünyalar benim oldu ki, o zamanlar dünya olarak, özüm olan Vasilya (Karşıyaka) Köyü’nü bilirdim.

Welcoming us into her home with all the warmth and maternal instincts of a Cancerian, our conversation, accompanied by Turkish Classical Music and works of art surrounding us was extremely pleasant and at the same time just as tranquil. We wish you a pleasurable read. You’re a well known artist on the island. Can you introduce yourself in your own words for those that don’t know you? I’m an addict of this beautiful island. Be it from anything that is alive/dead, its people... I am the product of the long nosed man, Pinocchio. Of course, at the same time I am a lover of peace.

How were you introduced to painting and the miniature craft? Being a teacher, my father initiated this introduction. I was such a hyperactive child that I would only settle down when I was given paints, paper and books to play with. I started primary school when I was five years old and when my father saw the things that I had done and said “My daughter is going to be an artist”, it was as if I was on top of the world, the world as I knew it then being the village of Vasilya (Karşıyaka).

Peki, öykü ve romana ilginiz nasıl başladı? Resim, şiir ve öykü birlikte başladı. Hatta çocuk yaşta şiir dalında aldığım ödüller vardır. Öykü, sözlü öykü olarak başladı. Tek gramafon ve radyo olan eve gelen köylü kadınlara kendi kurguladığım masal ve öyküleri anlatır, tek kişilik tiyatro oyunları sahnelerdim. Arkadaşlar bana o zamanlarda ‘şair’ derlerdi. Hayatta şiirin olmadığı hiçbir alan yoktur diye düşünüyorum. Roman, hep düşlerimdeydi ancak bir türlü yazmaya cesaret edemezdim. Hayatı bütünleyen tek şey olan roman, çok zorlu bir uğraştır. İlk romanım ‘Sana Sevdam Sarı’ da başrılı bulundum. Ancak tek romanla romancı olunamayacağını düşündüğümden tüm cesaretimi topladım ve ikinci romanımı yazdım. ‘Lale Yüreğin Beyaz’ çok büyük yankı uyandırdı. Bu romanla 2 tane ödül aldım.

So what sparked your interest in stories and novels? Painting, poems and stories all began at the same time. In fact I even have some awards for poems I wrote as a child. Women from the village would come to visit our home, the only home that had a gramophone and radio at the time, and I would tell them the stories and tales I had concocted, and act out one-man theater plays. My friends back then would call me “Poet”. I think there is no part of life where poems do not exist. I always dreamed about writing novels however could never find the courage. To write a novel, the only thing that completes life, is an extremely difficult struggle. I was deemed successful with my first novel, “My Love for You is Yellow”. However as I believed that you don’t become a novelist by writing just one novel, I gathered all my courage and wrote my second one. “Your Tulip Heart is White” created quite a stir. I won two awards with this novel.

As an arts lover which artists and writers does Özden Selenge like? Ever since my childhood I’ve had a passion for reading. I like the classics. These days I am more affected by books rather than writers. Necip Mahfuz, Tanpınar and Yaşar Kemal are the writers I get immense pleasure from. Recently the works of author Ducane Cündioğlu have brought me great enjoyment. We can call him the “Modern Day Rumi”. Out of the poets I like to read I can name Can Yücel, Haydar Ergülen, Turgut Uyar, Gülten Akın and Cemal Süreya. In the arts I am passionate about Michelangelo, Dali, Picasso and Frida Kahlo. From Turkey I like Burhan Uygur, Neşet Günal and Devrim Erbi. As for our own country, each of my friends’ exhibitions fill me with joy.

What do you think are the main traits that should be found in an artist? Humanism, caring about what has happened and has been lived, not to place too much importance on things, care about the world, to scrutinize all things, dead or alive. Also an artist should rid him/herself of bad feelings such as selfishness, hate and anger. An artist should let go of all negativity surrounding the hot air balloon and float away into the blue sky.

I’ve placed my ladder up to the sky and am trying to make my way up. In comparison to other countries in the world, on what scale is the art of painting in North Cyprus? The exhibitions that have been displayed in Europe and the Europeans’ reactions towards our paintings tell me that we have very seriously placed ourselves in a good spot. If your life was made into a film, what would be the best name for it? “Traces of Me”. Melodies from Münir Nurettin Selçuk and Zeki Müren would definitely be heard throughout the movie. Do you have any exhibitions or novels planned for the near future? Yes, in 2013 I plan to hold a miniatures exhibition and publish my book named “Traces of Me”. What would be your words of advice to youths (or as you call them, Feza-yı Ferda’s tiny suns) engaged in the arts and literature? Persevere. Güzelyurt, portakal, mandalina, greyfurt ve limon ağaçlarının çevrelediği; narenciyelerin baharda çiçeklendiği zaman havaya yaydıkları mis kokulardan sarhoş olabileceğiniz şirin bir beldesidir Ada’nın. Her bahçede görebileceğiniz rengârenk cemileler (begonvil), ful çiçekleri ve kaktüslerin yanı sıra toprağa ekilmiş sebzeler bereketi haykırır gibidirler. Bu bereketin kaynağı ise Trodos Dağları’ndan gelen kaynak sularıdır. Bu şirin ilçeyi biraz dolaşmaya ne dersiniz?

You figure that you’ve come to the citrus heaven when you see the magnificent Orange statue that meets you at the entrance of the town. Güzelyurt, is a pleasant place surrounded by orange, tangerine, grapefruit and lemon tress, where the air is filled with a dazzling smell when citrus blossom. There are bougainvilleas, Arabian jasmines and cacti plant in almost every garden and the vegetables planted side by side call out fertility. The source of this fertility is the water that runs down from Trodos Mountains. Let us go around this adorable town.

üzelyurt… The largest buildup area of Lefke and second largest plain after Mesarya Plain on the island. Its soil is so fertile and rich and the town is beautiful, as its name suggests; ‘Güzelyurt’ means ‘Beautiful Lands’ in Turkish. Before 1974 it was called ‘Omorfo’ which also meant ‘beautiful’.

Birbirinden lezzetli odun fırınından henüz çıkmış çörekler, börekler, tahinliler… Hepsi Kıbrıs’a özgü tatlar, sıcak sıcak masanızı süslüyor. Yemeğe doyamıyorsunuz. Masaya gelen çaydanlık ve demliğin altında ısıtıcısı bile var. Sonrası ise anlatılmaz… Yaşanır! O güzel kahvaltının üzerinize yüklediği ağırlığa kendinizi bırakmayın sakın ve yollara düşün, biraz tarih biraz doğa… Geçmişin dehlizlerinde dolaşmaya ne dersiniz?

ARGONYA Go through the greens of Güzelyurt and come to Doğancı junction. On your right hand side, you will see a mostly wooden building, hidden beneath the drooping willows. The wooden sign says ‘Argonya’. There is a small florist on the left and a small bakery where homemade products are sold on the right. When you walk through the front door, there is a hall where you can have your breakfast on cold winter mornings. The back door of the hall opens to a garden, full of trees and flowers and ducks and ducklings enjoying their freedom. Delicious sesame tea breads, pies, tahini bagels fresh out of the kiln... These all local tastes spread over your table when they are still warm... You cannot just get enough of them. Even the teapot comes on a heater. The rest is just indescribable... you have to be there! Don’t let sleep take you over after that beautiful breakfast; get up to some history, some nature... How about wandering in the halls of the past for a while?

Bina iki kattan oluşmaktadır. Müzenin yapacağınız ziyaretlerde ilk önce birinci katında Kıbrıs’ta bulunan çeşitli dönemlere ait çeşitli türlerdeki hayvanların kurutulmuş örneklerini ve Kıbrıs’a özgü İpek Böceğinden yapılmış çeşitli işlemelerin koleksiyonlarını görebilirsiniz. Müzenin ikinci katında ise Neolitik, Tunç, Helenistik, Roma ve Bizans dönemlerine ait çeşitli toprak küpler, vazolar, saksılar gibi buluntular sergilenmektedir. VOUNI PALACE Vouni Palace, which has a privileged place in Cyprus, is a heavenly place where history and nature meets. With its 2500 year mysterious history, its mountain and sea views, Vouni Palace is located 267 meters above sea level and it is a venue, people of all ages should see. The Vouni Palace is the only Persian structure in Eastern Mediterranean. When you look down to the Mediterranean from over the hill, you experience the breathtaking feeling of eternity. If your trip to Vouni Palace happens to be in spring, you will see many spectacular orchids around the Palace.

GÜZELYURT MUSEUM OF NATURE AND ARCHAEOLOGY Güzelyurt Museum of Nature and Archaeology was opened as an exhibition hall in 1979. Before the year 1974 the building was serving as Omorfo Metropolis. It is a two storey building. On the first floor you can see various mounted animals that lived in Cyprus in different eras and collections of work of silk worm cocoons; which is a branch of art indigenous to Cyprus. On the second floor, antique foundlings of earthenware pieces, vases, pots from the Neolithic, Bronze, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras are exhibited.

SAINT MAMAS MANASTIRI ve İKON MÜZESİ Güzelyurt kent merkezinde yer alan manastıra ait kilise, orijinalde bir Bizans yapısı olup zaman içinde birçok değişiklik geçirmiş ve son halini 18. yüzyılda almıştır. Giriş ve sütunları Bizans kilisesinden kalıntıların üzerine Lüzinyanlar tarafından inşa edilmiş, kubbesi 18. yüzyılda yapılmıştır.

Gezintimize ara vermenin ve bir kahve içmenin zamanıdır artık. Mardo, Kıbrıs’ın eski ve en güzel dondurma yapan kuruluşlarından biri olarak Güzelyurt’ta da yerini almıştır. Kahvelerinizi içtikten sonra ben derim ki “dondurmasını da tadın, özellikle portakallısını.”

St. Mamas hakkında birkaç hikâye olmakla birlikte en yaygın görüş 12. yy’da Güzelyurt çevresinde yaşamış Hıristiyan bir aziz olduğudur. Mezarı kilisenin kuzey girişinin hemen sol tarafında yer alır. Manastırda en çok ilgi çeken yer incir, üzüm, meşe ve kalkan motifleri ile oluşan sütunlardır. İkon bölümü Lüzinyan ve Venedik dönemine değin uzanmaktadır.

Ellerde dondurmalar, İngiliz döneminde yapılmış Mahkeme ve Polis Merkezi binalarını görmeye gidelim. 1930’ lar da yine İngilizler tarafından Kıbrıs’a özgü sarı taşlarla yapılan Bandabuliya (çarşı), İngiliz mimarisi açısından güzel bir örnektir.

Dört Venedik sütunundan biri üzüm, incir ve kalkan motifleri ile bezenmiştir. Kilisenin kuzey ve doğusunda yer alan manastır yapıları kayıtlara göre 1779 yılında inşa edilmiştir. Her yıl eylül ayının ilk günü, kiliseye adını veren azizin isim günü nedeniyle düzenlenen ayine çok sayıda Ortodoks katılmaktadır.

Artık gün dönmeye başladı; güneşi, 1975 yılından beri her yıl yapılan Güzelyurt Portakal Festival alanında, portakal ağaçlarının altında, yeşillikler arasında batıralım ve artık acıktığının sinyalini veren midemizin sesini dinleyerek, arabamızla yine portakal ağaçlarının çevrelediği yoldan Kalkanlı’ya doğru ilerleyelim.

SAINT MAMAS MONASTERY AND ICON MUSEUM The church that belongs to the monastery located in town centre, was originally Byzantine but it has undergone various modifications through time and took its final form in the 18th century. Its entrance and columns are from the Byzantine era, but the rest was built on these by the Lousignans. Its dome was added in the 18th century. There are several stories about Saint Mammas, but the most common one says he was a Christian saint who lived close to Güzelyurt in the 12th century. His tomb is to the left of the northern entrance of the church. The most interesting parts of the monastery are the

columns embossed with fig, grape, oak and shield plate motifs. The icon section is composed of items that go all the way back to Lousignans and Venetians. According to records, the monastery buildings to the north and east of the church were built in 1779. Each year, on the first day of September, many Orthodox believers attend the ritual, organised for the name day of the saint, after whom the church is named. Now its time to take a break and have a cup of coffee. Mardo, as Cyprus’ oldest and most beautiful ice cream maker & parlours, has now taken its place in Güzelyurt too. After

your coffee, I’d say “taste the ice cream too, especially the orange flavoured one”.” With our ice creams in our hands, let us visit the Courthouse and the Police Station built during the British era. The Bazaar (Bandabuliya) built in 1930’s by, again, the British, is a good example of British architecture. As the sun goes down, let us walk to the festival area, where Güzelyurt Orange Fest is held every year since 1975 and watch the sunset under the orange trees amongst greens. As nature calls for some food now, we can get into the car and drive towards Kalkanlı, watching the orange trees on both sides of the road.

And in restaurants that serve Cypriot dishes, you will most definitely be asked if you wanted to have a piece of this grilled flaky pastry after the meal. We compiled a simple recipe for you. As you can see from the recipe below, you can also use olive oil, but we suggest that you do it with heavy cream. Bon Appetite!

Preparation

Un, su ve bir tutam tuz ile hamur yoğrulur. Kulak memesi kıvamına gelen hamur biraz bekletilir. Daha sonra oklava veya merdane yardımı ile ince bir biçimde hamur açılır, üzerine kaymak yağı sürülür, şeker ve tarçın eklenir. Kare şeklinde kapatılan hamur, hafifçe kızarana kadar saçta pişirilir.

Knead the dough with flour, water and the pinch of salt. Leave the dough to rest after it is as thick as an earlobe. Later, spread the dough with a rolling cylinder, spread some cream over it, and then add sugar and some cinnamon on top of the cream. Fold the dough into a square, like an envelope. Grill it on a hot sheet pan until golden.

his month, we had the privilege of visiting the i Belli (meaning The Beautiful People) Italian Restaurant which was opened in October 2011 within the Old Turkish quarters of central Kyrenia. This is an original Italian Cuisine which is run by a beautiful Italian couple, Caterina and Emiliano. Their origin goes back to

the South of Italy, Napoli, all the way from Sardinia. Emiliano graduated from the Culinary School in Napoli and became an executive chef who has seventeen years of experience in many countries like Italy, Germany, London, Belarus, Spain, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. As he is from the South of Italy, the menu is generally designed according to the dishes from the South and few from the North such as Bologne. Caterina who is in charge of the whole front operation is not only one of the best PR’s I have ever seen but she is also very experienced in Italian Cuisine guiding, explaining, organising and making you feel at home. Great food, friendly hospitality and wonderful setting.

The restaurant has both round and rectangular tables and wooden traditional comfortable bamboo seats with pillows and they are laid far from each other so that every table has enough privacy.

The Sunday special Pizza nights are very popular at the i Belli and you may choose from starters, salads, cold and hot appetizers, pizzas and desserts. The I Belli has at least 2-3 specialities every night according to the market availability. This can be anything from chicken, fish, red meat, mushrooms or seasonal vegetables. It is always fresh, daily, seasonal and special. Başlangıçlarda insalata bella, cam kavanozda servis edilen, parmesanlı özel bir patlıcan yemeği, ahtapot salatası, dana ve levrek carpaccio paylaştık. Başlangıçların biraz fazla geldiğini fark etsem de hepsi bir birinden lezzetliydi. Yemek boyunca garsonumuz bizle çok ilgiliydi ve espri anlayışı da çok iyiydi. Yemek sırasında Caterina da zaman zaman masamıza uğrayıp her şeyin yolunda olup olmadığını kontrol etti, spesiyalleri tanıttı ve yemekler hakkında detaylı bilgi verdi. Ana yemekler için risotto nero (siyah risotto) ve kurutulmuş porchini ve taze mantarlı fettuccine söyledik. Ben, makarnası az pişmiş fettuccine’yi denedim, hafif bir kremaya iki mantarın muhteşem birleşimi eşlik etti. Risotto Nero’nun rengi, doğal olarak, siyahtı ve kendine has, leziz bir tadı vardı. Rose Pinot Grigio Blush yemeklere çok güzel uydu ve iyi bir seçim oldu. Denediğimiz yemekler ve şarap doğru ısıda servis edilip, mükemmel doku, lezzet ve tattaydı. Tabii ki bir İtalyan restoranına gittiğinizde gerçek bir İtalyan kahvesi, Limoncello veya Grappa içmeden oradan ayrılmamalısınız; biz de Cappucino, Espresso ve Amaretto ile hazırlanan Latte’yi seçtik. Bardan sorumlu bayan bize ev yapımı Mirto (Limoncello’ya benzer mersin likörü) sundu.

Bu, yemek sonrasında veya sırasında sindirimi kolaylaştırmak için içilebilecek en iyi aperatiflerden birisidir. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta işlerini kurmakta uzun ve yorucu bir süreçten geçen ve zor bir mücadele veren Emiliano ve Caterina’nın burada kurdukları arkadaşlıkları ve yakaladıkları başarı tüm üzüntü ve zorluklara değdi. Yıllar içerisinde birçok farklı ülkeden insanla arkadaşlıklar kurdum ve bir çok iş adamı tanıdım. Fakat gerekli prosedürleri ve engelleri öğrenen bu yatırımcılar fikirlerini değiştirdiler. Bazıları yatırım yaptı fakat değişik sebeplerden dolayı para kaybetti. Bu insanları koruyan biri oldu mu? Hayır... Bu prosedürleri kolaylaştırmak hakikaten imkansız mı? Hayır... Ya da biz hakikaten yabancı yatırımcıların yatırım yapıp vergi ödemelerini istemiyor muyuz? İstiyoruz. Eminim ki herkes Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta yabancı yatırımına ihtiyacımız olduğunu ve bu bireylerin ve şirketlerin bize dünyada bilinirlik kazandıracağını biliyor, dolayısıyla bu insanların rahat etmelerini, bizi tanımalarını ve bize güvenmelerini sağlamak her vatandaşın ve hükümetin görevidir. Altı kişi için toplam hesap, içkiler de dahil olmak üzere, 520 TL tuttu, ki verilen servis, yemeğin kalitesi ve mekanın ambiyansına bakılınca, fiyat oldukça makuldü.Eleştirmenler olarak değerlendirme yaptığımızda aslında menü, atmosfer, fiyat ve servisi göz önünde bulunduruyoruz.

While waiting for the first courses, you will be served home made bread and the Chef’s selection; very delicious liver pate to enjoy the wine with. We had insalata bella to share, a special aubergine dish which came in a glass jar with parmesan cheese, octopus salad, beef Carpaccio and sea bass Carpaccio. I realized that the portions of the starters were a bit more than expected however the taste of each plate was finger licking. The waiter was very nice throughout the evening and he had a very good sense of humour. Caterina came to the table on occasion making sure everything is under control and she recommended us some of the specialities and gave us some detailed information about the food. The main courses we ordered were risotto nero (black risotto) and fettuccine with fresh and porchini mushrooms. I had the al dente fettuccine and it was lightly creamed with the taste of the beautiful combination of the two types of mushrooms. The risotto nero was naturally enough, black in colour and it had a very unique and delicious taste. The rose Pinot Grigio blush accompanied the main course perfectly and that was a very good choice. The dishes and the wine we tried had perfect flavour, texture, taste and they were served in the right temperature. Certainly you can not leave an Italian Restaurant without having a proper Italian coffee, Limoncello or Grappa so we ordered Cappuccino, Espresso and the Latte with Amaretto. The bar maid served us home made Mirto (Mersin liqueur, like Limoncello) in hand painted ceramic jars and glasses and that is one of the best digestives to have during or after the dining experience.

Emiliano and Caterina had a huge struggle, very long and tiring process when setting up their business in North Cyprus but their success and friendships they built here are worth all the pain they went through. I have had many friends and known a lot of business people from many different countries over the years. However, when they found out about the details, procedures and barriers, these investors changed their minds. Some actually invested and lost money for various reasons. Did anyone protect these people? No…Is it really impossible to ease the procedures? No….Or do we really not want any foreigner to invest in this country so that they can pay taxes? No… I am sure everyone is wise enough to realize that we need foreign investors to come and invest in North Cyprus because these individuals and companies will actually promote us all over the world so it is every citizen’s and the government’s duty to help these people feel comfortable and secure. The total bill for six people including the drinks was 520 TL, which was a good price considering the service, food quality and the ambiance.
