Passing Shots

Editorial The ‘highlight’ of our winter tennis so far is without a doubt the ‘Shirley Senior Tournament’ held over the weekend of June 17/18th. The winter weather turned into a somewhat balmy still ‘spring’ two days with beautiful sunshine! The quality of play was exceptional from all players and our hospitality was enjoyed by all as you will see from the photographs to follow☺ All credit due to our ‘super-duper’ organisers Maree Fitchett and Sue Mitchell! Their leadership in directing all the helpers and volunteers showed exceptional management skills and expertise. Thus, resulting in a well-executed tournament with no hitches or glitches at all! Maree and Sue M; On behalf of the committee and all the Shirley Tennis Club members a massive

NEW HEAD COACH

Matthew Woolman

Over the past few months, Mark Wilson has decided to cease his coaching role at the Club to allow more time with his family. This is a decision we support and would like to extend our thanks to Mark for the contribution he has made over many seasons. The Club therefore had to advertise for a new Head Coach and we are pleased to confirm the appointment of ‘Matthew Woolman’ to fill this position effective from 1st August 2017. ‘Matt’ has recently returned from a tennis scholarship in the USA. Coming home he continued his passion in tennis and was the former assistant coach at Elmwood Tennis Club. Matt will be playing premier tennis at Elmwood this summer, and we aim to have him available for our top men's team (Division Two) and hope his participation will allow us to push for promotion to Division One. As a junior he competed at a national and regional level and also gained an ITF ranking. He is currently on his Assistant Junior Coach and is in the process of gaining his Junior Development Coach qualification. Matt will be responsible for all our Team Coaching, as well as Hot Shots Coaching for our junior members. He will also be running Cardio Tennis and Tennis Xpress programmes for adults. Becky McConnell will remain in place as an Assistant Coach to assist Matthew over the summer. All members are encouraged to contact Matthew to arrange private lessons if you are keen. The next 10 weeks would be an ideal time to approach him before our junior coaching commitments kick in from midOctober. Matthew's number is (022) 378 6015 Regards Wayne May/June 2017

Maree Fitchett: Time to ‘Step Down’ It is with enormous appreciation and respect to say farewell to Maree Fitchett and see her ‘step down’ from the STC Committee after so many years of giving so much! Maree joined the club 16 years ago and been on the committee for twelve years; the last six as deputy and club captain. Two significant and what I would call ‘weighty’ jobs for anyone to take on. But Maree has literally thrown herself into these roles with absolute ‘gusto’, ‘enthusiasm’ and dedicated hard work. This shows in the results of her achievements in what she set out to do. Over the past six years, Maree has shown outstanding leadership skills with taking our juniors and leading them through to the Senior Interclub and she firmly believes we have the depth in our junior section for more players to continue in the same manner. She has given the juniors enormous encouragement, pushing them outside their comfort zones with their tennis abilities. We have seen the juniors clearly ‘love’ Maree. She has a wonderful, caring relationship with them and they all repay her with nothing but admiration and respect. Maree has also worked extremely hard with organising the Senior Interclub Teams year after year. Her persistence and drive has resulted in maintaining ten Interclub Teams which has contributed to our club being placed in the top 4 in Christchurch! As if these two jobs weren’t enough? Maree has also given her personal time managing In House Competitions over the years. The Handicap Doubles, Singles, Club Champs Doubles and Mixed, Bill McIntosh Tournament and Strawberry & Champs, AND has attended many meetings. One thing I admire about Maree is during all her hard work over the years she has silently beavered away and never put herself on centre stage. Well now the time has come to do exactly that which is what she rightly deserves! On behalf of the Management Committee and STC Club Members;

Thank You Maree!

Respectfully, Fay McKay Newsletter Editor

PS: Maree will still continue to play a big part in the STC. She will still be seen in helping out with some roles and ‘beavering away’ as per usual☺

SPECIAL OFFER TO MEMBERS TO SAY THANK YOU! Dear Members The past six years have been challenging one for all our members while we have completed the re-build of our club. We have had to contend with various courts being out of action, temporary relocation to the Edgeware Club, the use of a Portacom at the Clubrooms and overall general disruption. Despite all this the vast majority of members have remained loyal to us and the Management Committee are extremely grateful for this support. We now believe we have a better facility than before the earthquakes and the equal of and other Club in Christchurch. We are proud of what we have – We trust you feel the same! Over the past 6 years, our membership has declined from pre-earthquake levels but we remain strong with 210 junior and 130 senior members at the end of last season. We remain the largest Club in the east, and fourth largest in Canterbury. The potential to attract new members hasn’t been helped by consistent road work activity that has disrupted our normal entry into the Club. We hope this will be completed by the start of the summer season. We are now in a space where we can focus on promoting the Club and facilities, and increasing membership levels. We believe you as an existing member are the best advocate for our Club, and to thank you for the loyalty you have shown, we wish to offer incentives to assist with our membership growth strategy. We are pleased to be able to offer the following incentives (subject to approval at AGM), in the form of a reduction off your subscription for any new members you introduce this season -

Senior/midweek and twilight members Introduce a new full member and receive a $70 reduction Introduce a twilight or mid-week member and receive a $40 reduction Introduce a junior member and receive a $30 reduction Junior members Introduce a new junior member and receive a $30 reduction Introduce a new adult member and receive a $50 reduction Maximum total reduction per person is limited to the value of their own subscription for the 2017/18 season and will be reimbursed to the individual once the new member is fully paid.

We look forward to seeing a good number of new members this season and offering the appropriate reimbursement back to you! Management Committee SHIRLEY TENNIS CLUB INC

Can you help?

SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL The Shirley Tennis Club is in the final phase of what will be a $1million investment in the Club that has taken place over the past 6 years. This investment has largely been funded through grants from charitable trusts and club fundraising with a huge amount of voluntary effort from members at numerous working bees. The end result is a fantastic 9 court facility (including 4 courts that will be floodlit), and with a brand new clubrooms that as a collective package make a very compelling offer for existing and new members. The Club relies on grant applications, subscriptions and normal Club fundraising to cover the cost of our professional coaching services, but with this available coaching resource we want to push the boundaries and promote this coaching proposition, and the Club facilities while still maintaining reasonable subscription levels. We are in a lower socio economic environment where many parents struggle to afford membership fees for the children’s sporting endeavours so we want to keep subscription levels as low as possible. We are therefore seeking sponsorship from local businesses, and those of Club members, to attract a stable of sponsors that can assist us to deliver this programme, but with a specific focus on children and youth in the area. We are seeking contributions of a minimum of $1,000 per annum, preferably for a period of two years to allow us to develop this programme. What we will offer in return for your support – (a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

Branding profile around our courts, on our website and newsletters and in other media Two free coaching lessons per season to you or a family member with the Head Coach Complementary Club membership for you or an individual in your family Complementary ticket in our Aces club raffle with weekly prizes up to $500 Receive Club newsletters and invites to social events throughout the year.

We appreciate you giving this opportunity due consideration and hope you will come on board to support the delivery of this programme to the children and youth in the area. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Regards, Wayne Turner Junior Administrator (021) 748-144 May/June 2017
