SAFER Britain’s security chief praised Muslim’s for helping to make the nation safer from terrorism. Admiral Lord Alan West said: “Extremists are now being given away by the Muslim community. Lord West was appointed security minister 15 months ago — on the day of an attempted bomb attack at Glasgow airport. He revealed in an interview with a tabloid newspaper that Britain was now safer from terrorists than it was then. But he warned that the threat of an atrocity was still severe. Lord West said a massive breakthrough came when Muslims started coming forward with information about suspicious activities of other members of their faith. He went on: “I think the Muslim population now understand how this tiny proportion of extremist terrorists are damaging one of the world’s great religions and our entire society. “We are now beginning to see them saying they don’t like it and beginning to tell us about these terrorists. “They see themselves as British and don’t want to

see their country attacked. “Our biggest worry is there are British-born Muslims who have become terrorists and we need to find out why.” Lord West was appointed by Gordon Brown to co-ordinate Britain’s security forces in the battle to beat Al-Qaeda. He said: “Overall, the message I would give is that a huge amount has been achieved. “I believe that we are safer than we were 15 months ago but the threat is still very, very high.” He said CCTV was a valuable weapon against extremist. Lord West added: “There is often a great shout about liberty but using what we’ve got is a fantastic way of stopping terrorism.”
