As Brexit looms over the horizon, the Muslim community last month found itself at the centre of attention once again after the intervention of the former foreign secretary Boris Pfeffel Johnson on the issue of whether Muslim women should adorn the niqab in public.
It is said that Johnson was rather aggrieved at Muslim women adorning the niqab and went as far as claiming that they looked like ‘bank robbers’ and ‘letterboxes’. Johnson also added that the niqab has no place in British civic society and that he would refuse to meet
a constituent dressed in this attireturning up at a weekly constituency surgery. One wonders why Johnson having been foreign secretary until recently having met wealthy Arab and Muslim rulers in the Middle East would make such an outburst of this magnitude.
