E-way bill Humane approach is the need of the hour fter a misfired attempt in February , the government has finally managed to successfully roll out the e- way bill system for tracking the intra, interstate movement of goods under Goods and Service Tax net from April 1. The single interstate bill valued Rs 50,000 will fall under the e-way bill ambit despite its mode of movement. But, certain goods that are cited in the special category list need not require e-waybill. Everyone is fingers crossed that the e-way bill portal, with 20,000 registered transporters and 11 lakh tax payers, will choke- up while going forward . It is important to note that since the system for tracking interstate movement of goods was launched at the beginning of a financial year, the actual load that the portal will have to bear on a normal business day may be heavier than the initial trends. This is because many businesses had already moved and stocked up goods by March 31, ahead of the system came into force, and are still completing usual year-end processes such as recording closing stock. A staggered schedule for rolling of e-way bills for intrastate trade in a few states at a time is expected. Given that India’s transport sector is still largely unorganised and many vehicle drivers are not fully conversant with the technical nuances. It is important that anti-evasion squads deployed to check ewaybills operate with a soft touch to start with, and limit frequency of inspections for goods moving across states. Else, the system could end up creating chaos for transporting goods in a country where goods movement already takes inordinate delay due to infrastructure deficiencies. A similar approach would be ideal for other anti- evasion measurers already in the pipeline including the matching of invoices from buyers and sellers, and the reverse-charge mechanism (expected by June end) under which large business would need to pay tax on behalf of unregistered small suppliers.

E- WayBill: A tax reform for surveillance
T
o make the interstate movement of goods more hassle-free and transparent the Central government has introduced the e-WayBill/electronic way bill. The bill has come into existence from February 1, 2018 and the Kerala government put it into force for intra, interstate movement of goods by January 12 in order to make the business community to get acquaint with it before the nationwide enforcement. This will become mandatory by April1 2018. The single interstate sales bill valued Rs 50,000 will fall under the e-WayBill ambit despite its mode of movement. The goods can be transported by road, port or by air. The certain goods those are cited in special category list need not require e-WayBill. E-WayBill given by a trader will become a valid document even without the physical verification of tax authorities. The onus of declaring the details in e-WayBill lies with the seller but if the seller is not taking the bill either the buyer or the transporter can take the bill. Whoever takes, they will get the messages in their registered mobile numbers. Even after the declaration if some discrepancies found in the declaration or the movement of goods is not taking place the bill can be rejected within 78 hours from the declaration. Beside this, if the seller provides some wrong information about the receiver of the goods it also can be rejected . The parties can login the e-WayBill site by the link available in their respective states tax sites. In order to clear the doubts the government of Kerala has opened help desks in each district and the phone numbers of each desks are
published in sites. The things to be known before taking the e-WayBill Before taking the bill you have to register in e-WayBill site. If you have GST registration with you already can be registered with it or with Pan Card or with Aadhaar card. The information will come to registered mobile number . User can monitor e-WayBills generated on his accounts/ behalf Multiple modes or e-WayBill generation for ease of use. User can create sub-users and roles on portal for generation of e-WayBill. Alerts will be sent to users via mail and SMS on registered mail Id or mobile number. Vehicle number can be entered either by the supplier / recipient of goods who generates EWD or the transport. QR board will be printed on each e-WayBill for ease of seeing details. . No need for separate transit pass in each state for movement of goods. Shift from departmental – policing model to self -declaration model for movement of goods.
Benefits Taxpayers/ transporters need not visit any tax officers/ check posts for generation of e-WayBill/ movement of goods across states. No waiting time at check posts and faster movement of goods there by optimum use of vehicles/resources, since there are no check posts in GST regime. User – friendly e-WayBill system. Easy and quick generation of eWayBill. Checks and balances for smooth tax administrations and process simplification for easier verification of e-WayBill by tax offices.
Apprehensions
Already GST is a complex issue having 4 or 5 different tax brackets.
Nowhere in the world prevailing so many tax rates. Apart from that, the GST software still overloaded and it is choking even today. Adding one more service into the same site will dampen the situation further. The Central government so far did not take any initiative to rectify the anomaly. Till the date the government has come out with nearly 150 circulars and notifications because of the unscientific and lack of home works before rolling out the GST in the country. The government is taking steps to simply the regime and we can expect more initiatives because of upcoming elections in certain states and the general election of 2019.■

The company started its operation by dealing a concept and product unknown to the market. Except for few retailers no other industry was using it in Kerala before the birth of’ Stallion. For the exports, it was mandatory, but they were mostly getting it from buyers abroad. It is nothing but the Barcoding Technology- the inevitable, part and parcel of any business for its growth thru automatic data collec-

tion, nowadays. Let us listen to Rajeev Nair, the CMD of Stallion Group, about his hardship and how he toiled to bring his company to a Rs 100-crore entity. Globally acclaimed one, dealing with totally new product in a virgin market. “ I am from Tr i v a n d r u m , born and bought up there. My father was running a grocery shop and mother was a teacher. I spent my childhood and studies at my native
village with plenty of activities in sports and arts and was outsmart many of them. After my Pre-degree with maths as the main stream made me to pursue 4- year undergraduate studies in ‘ Electronics and Instrumentation’ from the prestigious Indo Swiss Institute, Chandigarh, run by Central Scientific Industrial research(CSIR) under Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology. The Chandigarh days made me strong
and enabled me to adapt to multiple linguistic, regional & cultural situations. ``A US- based company called ‘Monarch Marking’ thru their Indian partner recruited me from the campus as they were looking for electronics engineer to promote Barcode Technology in India. It enabled me to be the first trained barcode professional in India. They gave me training in various countries and I started my career based in Delhi. My job was to establish Barcode business through - out the length and breadth of India for my company which was a Herculean task accomplished in those days. The reason was, nobody knew the pur-

to billion mark pose and the necessity of Barcode. Initially it was a concept selling and we put a lot of struggle to introduce the product among the various industries. We conducted several seminars in association with the industrial bodies to make aware the product to the market. Our company had spent a large amount of money and time for almost three years for the promotion with very low results. We were under pressure and was frantically in need of results. I even remember following up with needle industries in Ootty for 2 years to buy one Barcode printer from us. Luckily, the Barcode in export industries became mandatory, that was our opportunity to reap. ``Slowly, we developed our business in retail market. Most memorable experience in those days was my meeting with the retail legend --Kishore Biyani of Future Group. His far sight made him to introduce it in his garment segment first and later to other areas. Till 1995 end I was in Delhi and slowly cultivated a desire in me to come back to Kerala and start own business. Being the son of a business man the urge to do business of my own was always there. I learned my first lessons of doing business at my father’s shop, where I used to help him during the off time & holidays. I shifted the base to Kochi in December 1995. Of course, I was having various options including partnering with the promoters of US Technologies before UST was born. But later, I decided to put on my own show and Stallion was founded in August 1996 with the meagre initial capi-

tal of Rs 20,000, which was just enough for finding an office and fulfilling other mandatory paper works with the authorities. I started my office in a small premise with one person as employee to assist who is still working with me. The biggest challenge at that time was communication. Kerala is the southern end of the country. There was no e- mail, no mobile phones; the only options were STD and Trunk calls which was very expensive as my desire from the very beginning was to set up an all India- based company. Eventually which did happen and we set up branches one by one across India. Probably, we were one of few companies from Kerala those days to operate pan India. Initially, it was the coir exporters of Alleppey who become my customers as Barcode was mandatory for exports. I used to visit them very often and convinced them to use barcoding locally. Even today most of the coir exporters are my customers and we maintain good relationship. Then I approached retail, manufacturing and service companies for the solutionselling which include hardware, software & consumables. We were the first company to introduce the barcoding at jewellery segment in India and Bhima Jewellers share that prestige with us. There was no look back ever since the beginning of the business. We grew very fast by accumulating more and more customers. The profit was re invested to step up the ladder. Over a period of time we have grown to pan India, increased our manpower strength, added more and more product divisions and accumulated top line customers from all industry segments in India. Just look at our client list and
you will not miss any big corporate in that list. Reliance, Godrej, Tata, Castrol, Asian Paints are just a few to name. ``Over the years, we transformed our-selves from a product- selling company to a solution-selling company. Today we take up turn key projects in any industries for giving solutions such as automation, warehouse management, asset management, track and trace system and counterfeit management system etc..We believe for every problem there is a solution to implement. We have served more than 14,000 customers and we added up more business units to make sure that our customers do not have search

Recently we have installed RFID application in Prime Minister’s Office, which was one of the proudest moment for Stallion. ``I am an ardent traveller. I always travel, love to meeting people, participating in exhibitions to get the first hand information about the changes in the industry and also to know the culture of that particular place. At the same time, Stallion is an open book to all stake holders. ``The current workforce with Stallion is around 300 members. The attrition rate in Stallion is negligible and I am grateful to my team for their honest, devoted and hardworking attitude. Without them Stallion would never have become a company of this stature. In today’s world, it is not only the money that matters for the team, rather than they look for respect, importance and opportunity in decision- meeting, which make them to stay longer in organisation. Currently each business units are run by heads and they run it as an independent profit centre. Rajeev’s wife Asha Nair is a housewife and have passion in painting. Their son Manav Nair is doing his Masters in Business Administration in Australia and the daughter Nimisha Nair doing under graduation in Film& Video design at Pune. “ If we talk about diversification, of course I have certain plans about it,” said Rajeev. “While we continue our core business, I am always open to new business. The positive aspect of current business is that it is a niche. There is not much competition. The flip sides... this does not give you an opportunity to grow exponentially. ``Really I wanted to try my luck in Tourism and Ayurveda which are business conductive for Kerala climate”.

Roll, Camera…. Action Teaching management lessons through Movies An innovative teaching pedagogy
Geo Jos Fernandez Ph D
T
oday we live in an age, where, the audio-visual media predominates our daily lives and students spend a significant amount of their time in front of the small or big screen, and they are more responsive, to audio-visual stimuli than traditional, written forms of communication. Hence, the audiovisual media has greater potential to influence students’ mind-sets in the classroom compared to lectures and discussions. Popular audio-visual media like documentaries and films, if used effectively, could play a role in facilitating the active learning experience of students. Hence, the use of films in a classroom environment, helps extend the learning beyond the textbook, builds interest in a new field of study, and contributes to a learning style that’s stimulating and also provides moments of introspection. There are a lot of studies showcasing on how incorporation of movies to curriculum enhances the learn-
ing experience of the students. The incorporation of movies not only enhances the learning experience but also helps in laying the foundation for greater sensitivity, understanding, and empathy, as well as making the learning more ‘real’. It is an effective teaching tool for instructors in the areas where they lack practical experiences or struggle to inspire students with conventional delivery methods. It comes as no surprise that today, the premier B-schools around the world are using movies as a means to teach management theories, lessons on team handling, leadership, and group dynamics. Movies are not a mere indulgence anymore; they are a powerful learning aid. The incorporation of media technology into the traditional classroom and into blended courses has allowed for the use of films to teach lessons regarding business. The use of movies in a classroom can encourage students to engage in different and personalized articulations and viewpoints concerning the issues being examined, which may be rather difficult to attain in traditional teaching methods including lectures. The use of movies are useful in the context where different, multiple, and varying perspectives need to be recognized and the motivation it provides to less enthusiastic learners. It is a well-known fact that students remember popular movie content than the monotonous textbooks, research papers and other scholarly reference material and will be able to connect with the protagonist of the movie. Popular Hollywood movies like “The Godfather” or “12 Angry Men” can be better connected to management principles in a far meaningful way rather than watching a training film on CEOs discussing management
issues.
Movies that can be incorporated in the curriculum Following are a few of the Hollywood movies an academician can use to teach various disciplines of management for the better understanding of concepts. The author has tried to showcase some of the movies from Hollywood which can be used to teach management students, which doesn’t mean that there are no Bollywood movies. Movies such as Band BaajaBaraat, Badmaash
students learn more effectively using visual imagery. In the field of management, relevant course concepts and theories can be illustrated by using movies. The major task that each management teacher has to fulfil is to identify an appropriate movie and connect the movie to the concerned theory. Adopting movies in classrooms might not be accepted by all academicians as they might think that the concepts might not be well explained to the students in this manner, but they are not aware of

Prime Roofing is innovation savvy
T
he demand for roofing sheets has increased manifold globally. The only hitch for currently available roofing sheets in the market is they are not water proof. Usually roofing sheets are being used for preventing the leakage in industrial as well as concrete residential buildings. Currently available sheets are fixed on the roof by screwing it with the frame of roof which increases the possibility of the leakage in due course. The slight lag throws a spanner in the works or the hole made on the sheet will become enlarged due to the wear and tire is another reason for the leakage. Or the rusting up of the screws also will end up with the leakage. Naturally, the arrival of water proof roofing sheets in the market will be a boon for the consumers . Prime Roofing, the age-old trusted
brand in roofing sector, realised the dream of 100% water proof roof by introducing ‘Aqua Proof ‘ brand in the market. “Aqua Proof has been accepted and got the patent from 36 countries worldwide including the US. As far as Kerala is concerned Aqua Proof will be a relief for its customers since the state has torrential rain for six months in a year”, said Joseph Mathew Sankurikal, the Managing Director of Prime Roofing. Apart from Aqua Proof the company has been working on a product that will make revolution in the residential building segment.
Aqua Proof
Aqua Proof is also fitted by screwing it on the frames, like any other conventional roof tops available in the market. Previously there was a product in the market called ‘ Clip Lock ‘. It was used by putting a clip from bottom and insert it from top side. But, the issue is, this product cannot withstand the wind blowing powerfully. The roof will be taken off by the strong wind. Another product called ‘standing seam’ is also available in the market. For this product we cannot fix the insulated panels which prevent heat. But, Aqua Proof is designed by rectifying all these draw backs. The electro plated screws are used for fixing Aqua Proof on the frames to make sure that screws will not be rusted. The leakage will be prevented by the capping system on the screws. The Aqua Proof can be fixed at any length and where ever we want, is another

Joseph Mathew Sankurikkal Technocrat who walks before time
C
onfidence was the only capital for Joseph Mathew Sankurikkal when he entered with prime roofing in the market. Though he has two and half decades of experience in roofing sector, literally he was taking a big risk to commence an industry , while the world was reeling under economic recession. He gave up the safe and promising employment in Gulf Country. He was working with RH Profiles , a renowned company in the Middle East as a structural engineer. While he was quitting the job he was working as CEO of Kirby Buildings , the second largest
company in the world in Pre-Engineered Steel Building manufacturing. To begin a industry in a place like Kerala that too at the time of financial slowdown was discouraged by his well wishers . But, he was adamant and confident about his decision and the industrial friendly atmosphere of Kerala. He did not turn back; went ahead with the idea of Prime Roofing. Today Prime Group companies have four factories in India and three factories abroad, this was possible only because of his ability to walk before time. Bindu Joseph, his wife, assists him in his entrepreneurial tasks.

peculiarity of this product. We can fix insulated sandwich panels of 25 cm to 75 cm on this. If someone does not want insulated panels he can use it as merely a roof top. Fixing solar panels on the roof of the building is usual nowadays. The general practice for laying panels is putting holes on the roofs and fixing panels by the help of square tubes. Naturally, after one or two years the possibility for the leakage is high in this case. But, in Aqua Proof we can fix the clips on it, after laying solar panels on Aqua Proof, one should lock the clips fixed on it to tighten. The company is ensuring that even the wind blowing at 200 kilometres will not shake the panels. Powdercoated clips are being used for this purpose. The panels can be fixed even without putting holes is the additional advantage that provided by Aqua Proof. The Aqua Proof can be used as roof or wall cladding and the ribs between it can be painted with differ-

ent colours. The screws are applying on the alternative ribs on it. So, the capping system is a must for it. We can also use the caps continuously if necessary. Joseph Mathew is anticipating that Aqua Proof will become the darling of the market since the possibility for using the product in any colour surface and the number of ribs to be used has not been restricted . The price wise also Aqua Proof is affordable for common men; the product has merely 12% higher than the price of any other roofing sheets available in the market though it has 100% leak resistant capacity. Apart from that, the manufacturers are ensuring life time warranty for the product.
Capturing Global market
Along with Indian market Aqua Proof is aiming for 36 countries. Though the product is yet to introduce in Indian market, the export enquiries are pouring in, due to
the quality of the product. The Indian-made product will launch the manufacturing facilities in foreign shores by gauging the demand of the product there.
Nature friendly Wall Sheet
Most of the houses and buildings are being constructed by wounding the nature. We are intruding into the boundary of natural protection for all the ingredients like wood, sand and stones to fulfil our dream for the home. That thought has provoked Joseph Mathew to invent a nature-friendly product like Wall Sheet. Now Prime Roof is intending to manufacture a Larry Baker model bricks which can be used as alternative for the construction of walls. This will give a feel of original bricks as appearance wise and tangible wise. Per sq meter this product will have below 10 kilo weight and the length will be 12 meters. Joseph Mathew asserts the appearance of
P a s s l i n e
the wall sheet as original bricks after the construction. The consumer can fix the windows and doors as per his priority and wish. The manufactures are also giving assurance that it will reduce the heat than the 9-inch ordinary wall . Presently, after constructing the wall we have to do the ACP which costs you Rs 200 per sq ft , this cost will actually incur after the construction of wall which is an addition. But, in the case of wall sheet we can use it even without the structure of the wall, as an alternative for it. Joseph Mathew sharing the view that in the very near future buildings will be constructed even without sand and cement with a revolutionary product like wall sheet. Making bricks pattern will be a grand success, in the next phase, he will transfer the technology to granite and marble patterns.â–

We have a skilled trainer to equip our skaters in Roller Hockey too. Shooting as sporting event is promoted in the school, though rare in CBSE Schools. The Shooting Club with 250 members from Grade VI to X is under guidance of an exclusive Coach from Indian Air Force. The shooters bring laurels to the school by winning many prizes at District and State level.
In India around 13-14% of school children suffer from learning disorders (LD). The problem with learning disorders is that it may not manifest itself during a child’s early stage of development. Children with LD get admission in a normal school and every year they are promoted as per the routine process. When these children reach class VI or VII they will face difficulties in learning and comprehension which ultimately leads to various issues like being ridiculed by their peers, reprimanded by their teachers and scolded by their parents. The unfortunate result of all this will be expulsion from school which actually happens through no fault of theirs. They become frus-
P a s s l i n e
trated and bewildered, becoming failures in later life. Ironically, in India the policy related to LD is yet to achieve a breakthrough. The reality is that despite government rules, schools are yet to ensure that children with LD get special support and training. Only a few schools are aware of the problem. On the positive side, an exact assessment of the individual student and timely intervention can help the child in gaining a realistic understanding of his or her disability and the means whereby such disabilities can be overcome successfully. Identifying the exact nature of the disability is important in order to customize the training to the child’s requirements. It is this exigency that prompted Holy Grace Inclusive Education Centre for Learning Disabilities to undertake the project of finding appropriate solutions to the problems of those suffering from LD. The School takes care to give individual attention and training to each child, thus ensuring that all the children are equally benefitted. In this Herculean effort, Holy Grace Academy is the torch bearer in organizing classes for students with LD and Hyperactive Syndrome. The Inclusive Education centre is enriched with experienced and learned faculty in the respective areas.■

AndhyodAyA
makes the planet a place to live in W
orld has becoming pauper day by day in respect of its resources given by the nature for the betterment of the mankind. The man, due to his greed, exploiting the resources indiscriminately for his personal pleasure or amassing the wealth. He looted the nature and tilted the equilibrium of environment, depleted the energy and water. Unscientific way of handling the waste has made earth the planet a junkyard. In advanced countries they are now going back to nature by harvesting water, using alternative energy and by systematic way of waste management. They are scientifically advanced and also rich. But in India, 90% of the population are below the poverty line and they do not know about the miseries which their coming generation has to suffer. Kerala has achieved 100% literacy way back but, no educated youth has not come forward to find a solution for this or smelled the umpteen opportunities underlying in it till about two decades before. But, Peter Thettayil, a Philosophy Student, at the age of 30, thought differently. He knew that the world was going to be poor in its resources like Water, Waste management and environment equilibrium. He wanted to make these sectors rich. So, in 1990, together with six likeminded people, he started an NGO, by name The Andhyodaya at Angamaly in Ernakulam district of Kerala state. The aim of the organization was to initiate projects and programmes which would develop the above sectors. Though the establishment of the NGO was in 1990, he had to wait till 1994 to start the activities. Andhyodaya- etymological meaning of the word is ‘unto the Last’; interpreted meaning in Social development sector is ‘Rise of Last
man in Society’; in other words, Development of the poor. “ This call of the poor urged formation of the NGO and planning & implementation of projects covering these crisis areas. We walk innovative paths to reach the goal. Renewable Energy Projects, Rain Water Harvesting, Carbon Emission Reduction Projects and programs were init i a t e d to move closer to the goals,” said Peter Thettayil, the Executive Director of Andhyodhaya. “ On October 2, 1 9 9 4 , The Andhyodaya started its activities from a rented 90 square feet room in Angamaly with just 2 staff. Today the organization has more than 200 people including Technician, supervisors and Administrative staff; activities are spread in projects of smokeless chullas, Biogas Plants, Rain Water Harvesting, Carbon Credits, Solar Water Heaters, Solar Power Plants and Solar Invertors. Today the organization functions in a 12,000 square feet building by the side of M C Road in Angamaly. Geographical areas of operation is spread in whole state of Kerala, parts of Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, North East and Madhya Pradesh. Andhyodaya also has consultative projects in Uganda and Angola in Africa. In 2008, The Andhyodaya became the first NGO in India to trade Carbon Credits of biogas plants. In Collaboration with Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), USA, the organiz a t i o n reached financial a s s i s tance to more than 25,000 biogas plant owners of Kerala state and 15,000 of Andhra Pradesh under the Carbon Credit Programme. Much before that in 2006, The Andhyodaya bagged the first UNESCO India Water Award for constructing the largest number of Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Systems in Kerala and in Lakshadweep Islands. In 2007, The Andhyodaya received the ‘Upabhoktru Sadbhavana Award’ for the committed services to the customers of biogas programme from Consumer Protection council. But, a most memorable recognition came to the organization recently from the Government of Kerala. In the NGO Sector, The Andhyodaya
bagged the coveted ‘Akshya Urja Award’ from ANERT, Government of Kerala, on 28th February 2018. Executive Director Peter Thettayil received the award and the Appreciation Certificate from Power Minister M M Mani in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Till now, The Andhyodaya has installed more than 3,000 smokeless chullas constructed 4,000 biogas plants for cooking gas, installed about 5000 FRP Portable biogas plants for domestic waste management under the ‘Suchitwa Mission’ of Government of Kerala. Andhyodaya founded an exclusive division for implementation of Solar Projects by name Alternate Energy Corporation ( AECO ). It is a channel partner of MNRE, Government of India and an empanelled agency of ANERT, Government of Kerala. "We undertake Solar Smart ( OFF Grid ) and Solar Connect ( ON Grid ) programmes with subsidy from Government of India to the tune of 30% of the project cost. Nearly 1 mega watt Rooftop Solar Power Plants have been installed by the organization starting from 5kwp to 100kwp Viswajyothi Public School Angamaly, Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT) Mookannur, Viswajyothi Engineering College Vazhakulam, St Mary’s College Trissur, Deva Matha CMI Public School--Trissur are some of our valued customers. More than one lakh litre capacity Solar Water Heaters have been installed throughout our state. Recently a new project by name Clean Energy Promotion programme ( CEPP ) was launched to accelerate the Solar Water Heater Programme. Under this, Subsidy is available to the public from Rs 3000- to Rs 15,000 depending on the capacity of each Solar water
32 Heater”, said Peter. “In Andhyodaya, customer is King and various projects are having one aim of keeping him happy and making the nature cleaner, Healthier and Rich--the true Andhyodaya spirit. These achievements speak of the quality of service a n d
commitment to activities. We are contributing our share in facing global issues by implementing projects and programmes conducive to local conditions. But the goal in still far and we have 'miles to go before it’s reached. The Organization has a wonderful dream of reaching the 5 megawatt ON Grid Solar Power Plant installation during the Silver Jubilee year 2019”, he added. Peter Thettayil is happily married to Mary Kunju, who is the real inspiration and support for his life. Blessed with four children---Praveen MBA, Priyanka MBA, Pravitha, student
( MBBS ) ,Praveena, student ( MBA ). Family is the real place of rest and joy for the Executive Director.

March 31 - April 30, 2018 and the ultimate aim of sustaining development and ecological equilibrium.
Biogas Extension Programme
As the name itself suggests, a biogas plant uses bio-wastes to garner domestic fuel. The principle behind this is anaerobic digestion. In this method, the digestion of organic matter is carried out in the ab-
sence of air in a deep tank. During the process, anaerobic bacteria convert organic solids to methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia etc. The degradation of the organic matter takes place in two stages. The first stage involves the acid forming bacteria, which hydrolyses the waste into shorter chain organic compounds like organic alcohols, acids and ammonia. In the second stage, methanogenic bacteria convert these intermediate products into gases. Biogas plants are based on the anaerobic t e c h n o l o g y, which serve dual purpose of reducing environmental pollution and generating energy. ``The Andhyodaya has constructed more than 23,000 domestic biogas plants and 1200 institutional biogas plants. We are one of the project partners of the ANERT, Govt of Kerala State Nodal Agency for Renewable Energy Programme. We also join hands with the Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in implementing all types of renewable energy programmes in the state of Kerala. In constructing biogas plants we mainly consider rubber latex waste water, cow dung, piggery waste and kitchen waste as the raw materials.
Subsidies are reached to the beneficiaries from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India and Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT)

"There are organic, Non organic and Electronic waste to be managed. In fact waste is not waste but it is wealth. Government of Kerala set up a state Nodal Agency by name 'Suchitwa Mission' to make the state really a 'Gods Own Country'. The Andhyodaya is one of the service providers of this Nodal
Agency right from the start of the same. We are into management of organic waste both at the domestic level and at the institution level. The medium of organic waste management is 'Biogas Plants'. There are mini FRP portable biogas plants for the household level organic waste management and there are large Fixed dome biogas plants for Institution level waste management. Rainwater Harvesting
Kerala gets an average of 250 to 300 cm rainfall, annually. Due to the steep terrain, the major chunk of the rainwater falling reaches the Oceans within a span of 48 hours. This rainwater if harvested, can be used for drinking and cooking purposes during the stringent summers. Rainwater is harvested from the rooftops of buildings by channeling through chutes. Passing through layers of sand, gravel and activated carbon filters it before it gets collected in the harvesting tank. It is a proven fact that rainwater thus collected and kept without contact with air or sunlight can be retained pure for a year. Thus collecting rainwater at every household is the most economical and feasible remedy for shortage of drinking water. For an individual, per day, 20 litres of water is needed for cooking and drinking purposes. Thus for a family of 5, around 100 litres of water

average 200cm of rainwater annually, a surface area of 8 sq.m is enough to fill a harvesting tank of capacity 10,000 litres in 8 days. The cost per litre on rainwater harvested in a ferro cement tank is around 2 rupees less than that from a synthetic tank. Moreover, the technology is eco-friendly. The cost is further reduced if the tank is built underground.
